Welcome to Wimborne Minster Welcome to this 2011 Edition of the Wimborne Minster Town Guide produced by Wimborne Minster & District Chamber of Trade, a voluntary organisation supported and run by traders. One of our main aims is to provide a friendly, supportive and effective service to all visitors to our town. The Chamber of Trade has been involved with numerous projects over the years, including the Christmas lights, the free Christmas shows for the children held in the Allendale Centre, as well as supporting the Christmas Parade in aid of “Save the Children”. “The Spirit of Wimborne” mural will be back on display from late April to the end of July along the side wall of the Priest’s House Museum & Garden and will be seen from Crown Mead. This will draw attention to the archaeological dig that is taking place in the garden before building starts on their new Open Learning Centre. The mural will then be on view at The Model Town in King Street. We hope you find the Guide a useful source of information and that you enjoy your visit to our market town. Our web site www.wimborne-minster.co.uk contains a wealth of information. Diann March Chairman, Wimborne Minster & District Chamber of Trade

A Brief History of the Town of Wimborne Minster Archaeological evidence suggests that this part of Dorset has been home to people since prehistoric times. Situated between the rivers Stour and Allen each generation has left its mark and today Wimborne Minster still has something to offer visitors of all ages. History crowds in on visitors and residents alike. In the first century Roman soldiers settled here and later (in AD705) Cuthburga, sister of King Ina, built a Benedictine nunnery which at one time housed 500 nuns. The nunnery was destroyed by the Danes in 1013 and never rebuilt. Lady Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond, granddaughter of John of Gaunt and mother of Henry VII, founded a School “to teach grammar to all comers” in 1497. In 1562 Queen Elizabeth I re-endowed the School. Today’s School still bears the name Queen Elizabeth’s. St.Margaret’s Almshouses are on the site of a mediaeval leper hospital. In the centre of the town the Cornmarket was the original market place where the stocks (now in the museum) were in constant use. Isaac Gulliver, one of Dorset’s most successful smugglers, eventually became a respected resident living in a house in West Borough which still bears his name and on the north wall of the Minster is a tombstone to his memory. It is said that Charles Dickens saw the names of ‘Snodgrass’ on a small tablet in the Minster together with that of ‘Wardell’ in the baptistry and used these in ‘Pickwick Papers’. There are many beautiful and historic buildings around the town which is dominated by the twin towers of the Minster Church.

The Minster Serving the people of Wimborne for over 125 years

“For more than thirteen hundred years the Minster has been a centre for pilgrimage, prayer and worship.” We’re here to “It is not a Museum although we have inherited some wonderful treasures from help you01202 882456 7 the past. It is a living centre for work, www.dibbens.co.uk Wimborne 01202 882456 worship and prayer.” www.dibbens.co.uk Wimborne A Minster signifies that the church was attached to a religious house. Before entering the Minster glance up at the west tower to see the famous Quarter Jack. Originally the figure was of a monk but in Napoleonic times “he” was changed to depict a brightly uniformed grenadier who still strikes the quarters every hour, day and night. The oldest part of the Minster is the massive 12th century central tower which was once crowned with a spire. This fell during a Service in 1600, miraculously without loss of life or injury. The rest of the building dates from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. Among the many interesting, fascinating and historical treasures in the Minster are a small piece of tessellated pavement which is believed to be Roman, a Saxon chest, a remarkable early 14th century astronomical clock, a small 15th century brass tablet recording that King Ethelred (brother to Alfred the Great) was buried in the Minster 8 in 871 having died of wounds while fighting the Danes some 15 miles north of Wimborne,

Attractions Walford Mill Crafts Walford Mill Crafts, on the outskirts of Wimborne town, is a nationally acclaimed centre for contemporary crafts, which it promotes through exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops. Wimborne Minster Chained Library The Chained Library of the Minster can be found by going through the Choir Vestry and ascending the spiral staircase of 26 steps. It was founded in 1686 by a bequest of the Reverend William Stone a former Presbyter the gift consists solely of ‘Fathers and Commentators’ of the early Christian Church. In 1695 Mr Roger Gillingham, the Treasurer of the Middle Temple, who had been born at Cowgrove died and left a collection of mainly secular works. These books were to extend the Library of his friend the Rev Stone and were intended not just for the use of the clergy but also for the ‘shopkeepers and better class of person of Wimborne’. He insisted that the books be chained as was usual for public libraries of that period and this makes it one of the earliest in the country. The collection now consists of around 400 books all leather bound and the majority still chained. The oldest book is the Regimen Animarum from 1343, only two other copies have survived and of the three it is believed this is the best. It is written on vellum with a quill pen with ink made from oak apples. The oldest printed book dates from 1495 and is the collected works of St. Anselm. Amongst the books will be found some of the earliest printings of the Gospels and Bibles in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. There are works recording Atlantis, Halley’s comet, where to find unicorns , how to catch elephants, and even how to choose a wife. There are books on other subjects such as etiquette, politics, gardening and wine making. In

the Beaufort Tomb, a mediaeval glass window reputed to have been made by Flemish craftsmen in the 15th century, the famous Chained Library, as well as ten fine bells housed in the west tower which today ring for 9.45 am Parish Eucharist and 6.30 pm Evensong on Sundays, Weddings, and special occasions, as well as during practice on Tuesday evenings. The Crypt Chapel is kept as a quiet place for daily prayers. If you are able to attend Evensong you will witness a custom from the past when the Verger walks up and down the aisles during the reading of the lessons with a long wand “in order to keep the congregation awake!” There is a shop just to the right of the entrance where a myriad of carefully chosen gifts and a beautifully illustrated and knowledgeable guidebook are on sale. Times of the Services can be found on the Notice Boards in the Porch.

Fair Ground

Commercial Review

In recent years sufficient shops, businesses, churches, cafes, with the support of the Town Council, have signed up to the fair trade criteria for Wimborne to be awarded Fair Trade Town status. The number of outlets selling fair trade products grows rapidly. Local schools are highly committed. In 2010 fair trade sales in the UK hit one billion pounds, helped by Cadbury and Tate & Lyle converting all or part of their range to fair trade. But there’s a long way to go if every shopping bag is going to be teeming with fairly traded goods. One shop in Wimborne is 100% fair trade: Fair Ground in the Cornmarket, which sells a wide range of products from food to fashion, babywear to bath-time goodies, crafts to cards. Fair trade isn’t charity. It enables communities worldwide producing tea, coffee, chocolate, sugar, cotton, wine and much else literally to grow themselves out of poverty. Fair trade is about a sustainable future, providing a good deal for the producers and great products for us.

Wimborne Cemetery

CROWN COURT JEWELLERS Ltd 30 High Street 28 Wimborne

This typical Victorian cemetery was inaugurated just over 150 years ago and contains a listed Chapel, a Workshop and Lodge, all part of the 20 acres of well tended and tranquil grounds on the fringe of Wimborne Minster. The first interment on 1st April 1856 was that of a two year old from the town workhouse. Perhaps more poignant was the 4th interment, that of John Easton, the builder of the chapel, who died after being thrown from his horse while inspecting the new cemetery. Many visitors come to view the gravestone of Montague John Druitt, one of the chief suspects in the Jack the Ripper murders. Yet other famous names from Wimborne’s past lay buried here also. A full pictorial history is in the Chapel which can be seen on request. All visitors are welcome, whatever their reason, whether in tracing family history, reading the tributes on the headstones or just to sit and reflect.

The Wimborne Militia and the Jubilee “Physick” Garden We are a rather unusual group of people who dedicated to historical re-enactment of aspects of life in the town during the end of the tumultuous 17th century in Dorset and this Kingdom. In the popular world of historical re-enactment the Wimborne Militia is somewhat unusual and certainly unique. The Militia was raised by The Town Mayor’s Serjant Chris Brown in 1999 and we have the honour of holding a formal commission to bear arms, protect the Town, the Council and the Mayor. We wear the red coats with yellow facings of the Dorset Militia of 1685 who played a significant role in the Dorset & Somerset revolt also known as the Monmouth Rebellion. The Militia delight in taking on many roles in the town’s civic and cultural life both in fun and as part of serious historical re-enactment and research, but with a strong emphasis on the civilian side of life, donning our martial airs, as did our forbears, only when summoned. Early in 2002, the Town Council accepted the Militia’s proposal for the planting of a 17th century Physick garden as part of the refurbishment of the derelict ground behind the Town Hall and its first plantings were finished in time to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee, thereby named ‘Jubilee Garden’. Although not originally created to be used as a physick garden, this is now properly planted and labelled as such, and it has rapidly become an informative and fun place to learn and reflect, or relax and have your lunch, and sense of historic place has developed, set against the backdrop of the gazebo. The Militia hopes that local adults and children, tourists and historians will enjoy the scents and sight of plants that in the past have played an incredible part in all our lives. A plant will only earn a place in this garden if it was in existence in the 17th century and was used for either medicinal or culinary use or for dyeing clothes. As you enjoy your visit imagine what life would have been like all those years ago; how these plants would have played a central role in our

The Tivoli Theatre

38

The Tivoli celebrated its 17th Anniversary as a fully operational theatre in its present incarnation, on 23rd November 2010. It started life in the 1930’s as an Art Deco movie house before it closed down in 1980 and was left derelict for 12 years. Thanks to the help and determination of a group of volunteers, the Tivoli has gone from strength to strength and is now regarded as one of the top medium sized venues in the South West. Its diverse programme reflects the tastes of the community and way beyond, with some of the country’s top rock, jazz, blues and folk musicians along with household names in comedy and drama, and not forgetting local groups who make up an important part of the programme with a mixture of music, dance and drama. It has recently hosted performances by Charlie Watts, Lee Evans and Eddie Izzard and later this spring/summer, Des O’Connor and Lesley Garrett will be appearing in their own shows. The Tivoli is open all year except some Sundays and Christmas Day. Phone the Box Office on 01202 885566 for information.

Did You Know That ... ... Standing in the Square you weigh upon thousands of bones in the charnel pits of the old St. Peter’s churchyard. St. Peter’s was the parish church for medieval townsfolk and is recorded first in 1330. It stood in a churchyard described as one acre ‑ roughly twice the size of the present square. By the 1540’s it had fallen into disrepair and was rented out as tenements and storehouse. In the 1590’s the Hanham family acquired the property, vested it in the Town Corporation and a Town Hall was built. The 1613 map of the town shows open arches at ground level for stalls, an upper meeting room and a neat outside stairway. By the 1680’s the building was considered to be so unsafe that the Corporation moved its meetings to the first floor of the present Albion inn, (then the New Inn). By that time much of the churchyard had been rented out for buildings and gardens. The Barclays Bank building is on the site of the old Crown Hotel, one of Wimborne’s three coaching inns. By 1858, after the coming of the railway to the town in 1847, only one stagecoach remained ‑ the ‘Gem’, running from Blandford. The King’s Head Hotel was run by the Laing family for most of the nineteenth century. In 1887 it was sold to William Ellis, (known locally as ‘Master Builder’), who built on the top storey and cased the building as it is at present. He built a Hall within where the new and aptly named Laing’s Brasserie is at present time. This was known as Victoria Hall, was used as a corn‑market and for dances, plays, meetings and magic lantern shows. The first films were shown here and were continued until the Tivoli Cinema opened in 1936. What remained of the original church and its yard was levelled and surfaced in the mid‑nineteenth century to become the Town Square.

Did You Know That ... ... Some street names like East Street, Eastbrook and Mill Lane last for centuries. Other names change over the years and often give clues to the historical development of the town. Route changes, important new buildings and new trade can be reflected in new names: Cheapside became Market Street then High Street; Green Lane became Meeting House Lane then Chapel Lane; Puddle Lane became West Street; old West Street became Old Road; Baskett’s Lane became Lewen’s Lane; Blake’s Lane became Black Lane then Crooked Borough now East Borough; Locke’s Lane became Luke’s Lane then Prior’s Walk ‑ and so on. Some names can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Redcott is an example of a fourteenth century family. Names above, such as Puddle or Pudele and Locke(y) are on the list of leaseholders in early fourteenth century Wimborne. Anyone who has been brought up in a rural community will know that roads are often named after original residents. Cok is prominent on those lists. I don’t think that the present Cook Row was where all the cooking was done! Some names disappear with the roads. Stote or Stoke’s Lane ran from the end of Green Lane to the river and is lost under the grounds of Allenbourn School. We still don’t know where Kayteldstreete, Crabbe Lane, Colly Lane, Le Chauntry Street and Clackstreet were, although there is a Glaket on our lists of old. One day, perhaps, we shall have a Waitrose Way!!!

A desirable place to live? Opinions may vary but Wimborne has been recognised as one of the most desirable places to live in the South. It has not always been highly thought of. In Saxon times it was well‑known for its excellent nunnery which had provided women of great character and learning for missionary work in Germany. The area was well documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 and later medieval trade promoted a steady population growth for several centuries. John Leland, created ‘the King’s antiquary’ by Henry VIII, visited the town c.1540 and wrote: ‘The town is meetly good and reasonably well inhabited. It hath been a very large thing and was in price in the time of the West Saxon kings.’ A thriving town, then, but noted for past fame and fortune. By the 18th century things had declined. In the first edition of Hutchins’ ‘History of Dorset’ we read: ‘It is most certain that the town of Wimborne is much more remarkable for what it was formerly than for what it is now.’ ‘It has little reason to boast either of the cleanliness of its streets or the neatness and regularity of its buildings’. ‘Wimborne is a populous town but it appears to labour under a lamentable want of any police. One of the streets presents a stagnant pool from side to side...’ ‘There is now but little trade carried on....’ So much for the town itself. The writer notes defects were balanced by the surrounding good soil, air, water and prospect. He could have had these without the town being there! By 1906 things were not improved. Sir Frederick Treeves wrote that ‘Wimborne is a commonplace town, squatting soberly in the meadows about the Stour. There is little to show that it has ever been ‑ as Leland avers ‑ a very large thing’ ‘Its great and only feature is its splendid Minster, which is visited in the summer by thousands of holiday folk in wagonettes and coaches.’ Well, holiday folk still come and a lot would like to live here. You can’t blame them for wishing. It’s such an accommodating town, in every sense of the word.

Did You Know ...

She was sister to King Ina of Wessex, therefore a Princess. She married the King of Northumbria so became his Queen. On the death of her husband she established the Abbey where 500 nuns were educated and trained. She died August 725 and was buried in the Saxon Church on what is believed to be the same site as the present Minster. King Ethelred was killed by an arrow at Martin in a battle against the Danes in 871. His brother Alfred had his body brought to Wimborne for burial. Alfred became King Alfred the Great. King Sifferth was a Danish king who met with some kind of accident, or he may have killed himself in 962. He too was buried in the Minster.

. . . Grammar School Lane used to lead to the former Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School which originated in a chantry founded in Wimborne Minster in 1497 by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII. . . . Julians Bridge, which crosses the River Stour on the road to Dorchester was built as a pack-horse bridge in 1636. It was enlarged in 1844 and has refuges for pedestrians built into both parapets. . . . that there are reputed to be 2 Kings and a Queen buried in the Minster? St. Cuthburga founded an abbey at Wimborne in the year 705.

Open hearths, candles, lanterns, thatched wooden houses close together ‑ a recipe for disaster! Fires in past centuries could destroy towns in a flash. No Fire Brigades! Wimborne church wardens paid sixpence in the 1520’s ‘fore a fyre croke to helpe draw down housis that are adventured with fyre’. In 1762 they paid for two dozen leather buckets. In 1761 they ordered ‘a first-sized fire engine’ with leather pipes and ordered that the watercourses which ran down the streets be kept clear. In 1850 the Vestry bought a new pump‑machine and both engines were kept in the west tower. On Sunday 14th August 1864, a disastrous fire broke out in East Borough. The fire engine arrived but could not be made to function until three‑quarters‑of‑an‑hour later. By that time twelve houses had been destroyed, plus the Smith’s Arms, (formerly The fire in the High Street, 2009 The Silent Woman), which was ruined in twenty minutes. The newspaper reported ‘... we trust a Fire Brigade will be established in Wimborne’. Little notice was taken of journalistic advice. In 1871 the fire engine was placed in the care of the gas inspectors, as no‑one else seemed to want it. In July 1900, a large fire broke out in East Street. The engine, in the charge of Harry King, engineer, could do little to help. Its pipes were leaking and it could not be got within reach of the flames. Action was prompted at last. The 1903 Directory shows a ‘Fire Brigade Station’ at Eastbrook.

Did You Know That ...

. . . the infamous smuggler Isaac Gulliver lived out his late law-abiding years in Gulliver’s house in West Borough? He became Churchwarden of the Minster and a tombstone bearing his name can be seen in the Baptistry. . . . Montague Druitt, a barrister and second son of Wimborne’s leading surgeon William Druitt who lived at Westfield House, was thought by some to be Jack the Ripper? Apparently Sir Melville Macnaughton of Scotland Yard was one of the many people to be convinced of this. Druitt drowned himself in the Thames shortly after the last murder.

a Mail Coach and more. The Crown and Anchor was once called ‘The Case is Altered’!

. . . in the late 17th century Redcott’s field was covered by the buildings of a large cloth‑making factory. Most of the employers were Dissenters, who were given such a hard time by representatives of the Established Church in Wimborne that they removed to Romsey. Most of their 400 workers went with them. What a loss!

Most intriguing, perhaps, was the Silent Woman in East Borough. No women allowed in? Did she carry her bleeding head under her arm, as on the sign of an inn of the same name in the New Forest? Or was there a town ducking‑stool for naggers and scolds in the River Allen, just down Stocks Lane, opposite the inn?

. . . Public houses were always important in a community, catering for travellers and serving as entertainment, social and business centres. They were the venues for Manor and Magistrates Courts. Wimborne had many inns. Oldest recorded inn was The George in the Corn Market (1524). Opposite was the Guild Hall. The patron saint of the Guild of Wool Merchants was St. George. Any connection? (What about St. George’s Chapel in the Minster?). The White Hart nearby had a licence in 1758 but the building is much older. The White Hart was the badge of King Richard II (1367 ‑ 1400). Any connection?

Vision Wimborne Dialaride

The Albion, first documented as the New inn in 1681, is the oldest inn still in business. A touch of class was indicated by the ‘royals’ ‑ the Royal Oak, (now the Rising Sun), the Kings Arms, (now the Cloisters Restaurant), the Kings Head Hotel and the Crown Inn in the square with the Crown and Anchor at Walford.

Have you seen a Ghost recently? Wimborne has its spectres, like any other town. In the past a cowled figure was reported as walking by the Minster. The Griffin Hotel, which once stood by the station, (now Wimborne Market), had a room from which heart‑rending sobs could be heard, especially at Christmas time. Several other places have their record of uncanny happenings. Sceptics might agree that some stories of the weird were invented just to ‘drum up’ a bit of trade, but there is no explanation for the ghost in Kings House in West Borough. Before the Second World War the resident of Kings House would hear footsteps coming up the stairs at six‑o’clock each morning. Then would come the sound of a heavy door being shut! Next door, in Dickens House, a ghostly clergyman would appear out of the wall. He was dressed in black and carried a Bible under his arm.

Seen any ghosts recently? The Reverend Percy is still around the house!

Photo: Roger Holman

The ghost is thought to be the Reverend Percy Newall, who owned Kings House (or Garden House as it had been known before), from 1843 to 1875. Later, a blocked‑up doorway was found in the wall, so the two houses were connected at one time. Angels Coffee Shop & Restaurant
