I have a fair number plants that flower up to the first frost, but obviously StephenofCheese: with less exuberance than at their peak. We suggested they visit Freephone: gardens on their return, to see what’s about, but that’s not so easy – the NGS has very few open in October, mainly Edmondsham for its masses of cyclamen and wonderful protected walled garden. We suggested they ‘Chelsea chop’ their plants before leaving in July, i.e. cutting them back in May to force them to flower later. What we forgot to mention were colourful leaves, fruits and berries. Maples, liquidamber, rosy crab apples, hips and haws are looking wonderful at the moment, euonymus (pictured), elderberries, viburnums – all should be waiting for them on their return unless of course the birds get there first. It’s.... PINK OCTOBER !!

Women are being encouraged to support Breast Cancer Care during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October by donating their old and unwanted bras as well as attending ‘Pink’ events to raise vital funds for the charity – Breast Cancer Care. Curves, Wimborne has installed a bra bank for both members and non-members to donate any unwanted bras. £1 will be donated to Breast Cancer Care for every kilo (roughly 17 bras) collected. Bras are then sent on to those in need or recycled. This year Curves Wimborne would like to help Breast Cancer Care support even more people affected by breast cancer. So we are urging all local women to raid their drawers and support this fantastic cause. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer in some way, so it’s hugely important that the local community supports these fundraising initiatives. The money raised will enable Breast Cancer Care to continue

to deliver its wide ranging practical and emotional support services to the 46,000 people affected by breast cancer in the UK every year. Breast Cancer Care is encouraging people nationwide to celebrate the most relaxed day of the working week throughout October by taking part in the charity’s Pink Fridays fundraising campaign, so Curves Wimborne are also going to hold a

Pink OPEN Friday on 21st October. 25 Last year Curves clubs across England and Wales raised over an amazing £50,000 for Breast Cancer Care through Pink Fridays activities and the bra recycling initiative. As a women-only gym, Curves understand the importance of supporting the vital work carried out by Breast Cancer Care in the UK. For more information on the charity please visit www. A simple way to cut your energy bills in half Well, well, well, energy bills have leapt up again. It’s hardly a surprise. The average household’s utilities bill has risen 62% over the last few years. Recently the media has been full of stories about the price hikes, expressing anger at the big utility companies, but few commentators have offered a solution. The simple fact is by installing a solar panel on your roof, you can dramatically cut your energy bills, by as much as 50%. Solar even works when it’s cloudy. Getting solar on your home needn’t cost you a penny either. Engensa Solar Installations, one of the country’s leading energy companies, are offering to switch you to solar at no cost. By effectively renting them your roof, they will design a system,

33 install it, monitor and maintain it entirely free of charge. This is possible because they collect a Feed-in Tariff from the government while you use the free, green electricity. So while the rest of the country is looking down the nose of the highest energy bills ever, you can switch to solar and spend the savings. For more information visit or call 0800 1701717 - see our ad on page 22.

Book title: The Legacy Book author: Kirsten Tranter Review by Jane Roberts Publisher: Quercus Published: 04/08/2011 ISBN: 9780857380609 RRP: £12.99 A terrorism-fraught story of how 9/11 ripped friendships apart, The Legacy begins with Ralph and Julia attending the same Sydney University and bonding over their love of obscure movies. Ingrid, a distant cousin of Ralph’s, is brought back into the family after bereavement. She’s beautiful, glamorous and intelligent and instantly Ralph is infatuated. Ingrid inherits a fortune and leaves to travel, visiting Europe and ending her tour in New York, where she falls in love. Distance means that the close friendship of the three quickly spirals apart. At 9am on 11 September 2001 Ingrid has an appointment with her financial advisor downtown. She is never seen again. The actual event of the Twin Towers falling is glossed over but the book looks more at the aftermath, of how people dealt with the tragedy – an interesting slant that gives insight as to how different people deal with grief.

Twelve months later Julia decides to visit New York to try to piece together Ingrid’s life before that fateful day in order to gain closure and to discover how her once close friend spent her days in her new life. What she finds is surprising and disturbing. This is a good read for fans of romance and psychological thrillers – a successful combination of the two as it gives the reader something to think about while enjoying the underlying theme of unrequited love. A promising debut from Kirsten Tranter. Have you ever thought of writing your Memoirs?

In our community Wimborne In Bloom Duck Race

The 12th Wimborne in Bloom Duck Race on 27th August raised £1,100 towards ‘In Bloom’ funds and in particular the Autumn planting.

The Town Mayor and Mayoress Councillors Robin and Sue Cook along with members of the Wimborne in Bloom Committee launched the Ducks into the River Allen by the Riverside Mews Café bridge. With the recent rain the river level had risen a little and the first ducks to cross the finishing line at the Rising Sun Car Park completed their journey in just over fifteen minutes. The rest of the field followed in hot pursuit! The winning Duck No. 870 was owned by Rosalyn Barnes who won £50. Second home was Duck 689 owned by Geoff Savill, who won £25. Third Duck was No.152 owned by Vivienne Offer who won £10. There were £5 prizes for the owners of the fourth, fifth and sixth ducks home. The last Duck home No.987 won a ‘Bottle of Wine’ donated by The Rising Sun, for its owner Alana Jones. All 1100 ducks had been pre-sold at £1 a time thanks to the Co-Operative and Waitrose Supermarkets allowing members of Wimborne in Bloom a selling point at their entrance.

Niamh Forward receives the 4th prize on behalf of her mother Carrie Edwards, from Town Mayor Councillor Robin Cook

Anthony Oliver, Chairman of Wimborne in Bloom, “thanked everyone who helped with the selling of tickets and all those who purchased ‘Ducks’ in support of Wimborne in Bloom, The Minster Press for the use of the Bridge from which to launch the ducks and the Rising Sun for the finishing line, the use of their garden and the prize for the winner of the last duck home.

Town Wins Small Town Title with Gold Award

For the first time since 2006 the Town of Wimborne Minster has won the Small Town Title in the Regional South and South East in Bloom Competition with a Gold Medal Award. The judges said they were impressed with the impact of the floral displays and were pleased to see more sustainable planting. The Waitrose Grounds came in for credit with the new sustainable planting and the creation of a new open space. The wheelchair friendly Redcotts Recreation Ground was immaculate with the comment the judges had not seen a “Rec” so well presented. The walk alongside the river Allen had very good information boards. It was pleasing to see that Wimborne in Bloom is working in partnership with other agencies. The judges could tell that the community are proud of their town as everywhere was exceptional with no litter, fly posting, graffiti, dog fouling or weeds in the streets. They praised the work of the Wimborne Volunteers known as the “Wombles” which was quite outstanding. There were too many people and organisations to mention individually – well done to all of you. In addition Wimborne was a runner up for the Community Involvement Award. Anthony Oliver thanked not only the ‘In Bloom’ Committee for all their hard work but also everyone who assisted in helping us to achieve such splendid results. Autumn Subjects

Nature is now shutting down for the winter but photographic options and opportunities are not. We associate rich warm colours, dew, mist, seeds, berries, nuts, fungi and falling leaves with this season. Close to Home Many of the illustrations this month have been taken in my own garden. You do not have to go great distances to find attractive glimpses of Autumn as heath land, woodlands and rivers are never far away. Time of Day Early morning is excellent for capturing mist and dew. If you’re walking the dog, walk with the camera as well. Cobwebs are very common as are seed heads and both are improved when covered with water droplets. When moving close to a subject to capture detail, depth of focus is limited. Being square onto the subject e.g. the spider ensures the whole image is sharp. The dew-covered web in the trees picture shows careful focus/ subject/ depth of field selection throwing foreground and background out of focus. Lighting I have often referred to lighting in these articles. Back lighting is one of my favorites and both the clematis seed head and the late flowering anemones are enhanced by this technique. Flat lighting can be useful as with the bracket fungi on the tree allowing a lot of detail in the picture. Colour Converting misty scenes to black and white can enhance the ‘atmosphere’ of the image as with the woodland picture. Contrasting colours will produce strong, vivid images as with the red leaves against the rich green of the conifer.

Autumn is an ideal time of year for such shots so why not have a go and enjoy the wonderful variety nature presents to us at this time of year.

Now is a good time to treat your horse for tape worm; not a nice thought but so important to your horses health. The eggs are ingested by the forage mite; the larval tapeworm hatches in the body cavity of the mite, the horse eats the mite either on the pasture, in hay, or straw, then it develops in the large intestine before being passed out in the dung to start the cycle again. The symptoms of tapeworm can be weight loss, hair loss, colic, intestinal rupture; worm egg counts do not show tape worm, the only test is a blood test carried out by your vet. Tapeworm is becoming more of a threat and has caused many deaths. You can treat at any time of year at six monthly intervals with a products containing praziquantel or double dose with pyrantel. You can only buy wormers from people who have passed exams to become SQP’S. I have been selling wormers for horses, cats and dogs since 1998 and attend regular courses to keep in touch with the latest thoughts, so please if you need any advice phone me and I will be happy to help.
