News in Brief Wimborne’s Police Station Faces Closure Local Councillors are concerned as the two staff that run the counter at Wimborne Police station have been told their jobs are at risk under a recent review. If the counter does shut members of the public will have to travel to Ferndown to report a crime face to face.Assistant Chief Constable Mike Granville said the force was reviewing all its counter services, but no decisions had been made. Around 670 visitors enjoyed strolling around 21 Wimborne Gardens whilst at the same time raising almost £4,000 for Wimborne in Bloom funds. The total was boosted by Barclays Bank and their matched fundraising scheme. . The ‘In Bloom’ Committee were delighted with the response and we were indeed fortunate with the weather. The dear old montbretia is to blame, it looks beautiful growing wild along the hedgerows in the west country, but in gardens it colonizes very rapidly by making a string of corms and stolons which travel from the mother plant and start into growth among the roots of shrubs and favoured perennials and become extremely difficult to eradicate. But the dazzling colour in my garden at the moment is the fiery red of Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Lucifer’, an aptly-named elegant upright plant, just over a metre tall. Lucifer is always the first crocosmia to flower in my garden and other gorgeous cultivars follow. (It’s amazing how one minute you like a plant and the next you have a collection!) I have ‘Emily MacKenzie’, ‘George Davison’, ‘Vic’s Yellow’, ‘Dusky Maiden’, ‘Solfatare’, ‘Severn Sunrise’, ‘Gerbe d’Or’ and ‘Star of the East’, which has the largest flower and is a lovely soft orange. Some people won’t have orange in the garden either but at the moment my best patch is Kniphofia ‘Shining Sceptre’ and Hemerocallis ‘Frans Hals’ (both orange) with Argyranthemum ‘Jamaica Primrose’ behind and a few heads of Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ mixed in. Get your butcher to cut through the bone, season the pork well, start cooking the joint skin side down in an oiled pan on a med to high heat, then turn down when starts to crackle. Chop all vegetables up into small dice. Brown them in another oiled pan and season, then add garlic and large pinch pepper. Add couscous followed by apple juice. Cover and move to one side. Colour the other sides of the joint well, then cut the joint into 2 chops and sear the last side, continue cooking till just firm to the touch. Leave to rest, then take off the bone and serve with a large spoon of couscous with some mixed salad. Enjoy!!

Glen Farm Pick for Success 2011 has been a successful year here at Glen Farm so far, the fruit crop had a good start due to the fact that we did not have any late spring frosts which were hard enough to kill the blossom. This was followed by unusually hot weather, which brought all the crops on early, due to the way we grow the strawberries and the many different varieties that we grow that does not mean the season will end early for us. The heavy rain in June was a mixed blessing, it helped the raspberries, currants and gooseberries growing in the soil but was bad for the strawberries, the fruit of which do not like being soaked and it came at a time when most of the crop was not under protection.

Cropping Photographs When critiquing photographs, one word I use more often than any other is ‘CROP’. I have found that most people leave every image as shot whereas many ‘alright’ photos can be greatly improved with a little thought and simple editing of the shape and content of the image.

Sometimes purpose is a relevant factor. Cover images for magazines such as this Directory need ‘neutral space’ allowing for text and images to be placed over the photo without losing picture detail. Photographers creating images for publication always need to compose photographs so they can be used in a variety of formats and always look good. The end user can then crop to suit. For personal images you are the end user. Cropping is often an effective way of improving images. The photo of the 2 lads enjoying the New Forest point to point racing was a candid shot where it was not possible to exclude other people and dogs. Cropping the image has turned a messy photo into an effective informal portrait.

Photography

The series of images taken at Derwent Water in the Lake District is a different approach. The original photo, taken in black and white and blue toned, works well but there are other images which can be ‘extracted’ by cropping.

To summarize, some images are better with a single crop whereas other images can reveal several different equally effective photos from the one original. Have a look at your existing photos and experiment with different amounts of cropping. The result can be much more rewarding photographs.

With the summer come the flies and midges. Horses bitten by midges can develop a condition called sweet itch, if not treated it can only get worse.The saliva from the midge bites makes the horse itch, one of the best products I have found is Nettex itch stop salve. The itch can be relieved by applying the salve once a week (you can apply more often if needed).This not only relieves itching but repels flies and midges from biting. At the moment Nettex are doing a special pack containing 600ml of itch stop and 250ml fly repellent plus sponge retailing at about £23.99, also if possible use a fly rug with full neck and face to aid protection before the flies are about, to stop the cycle before it starts.

The first Racing Engineer is William S. Harley. Within a few short years, team HarleyDavidson is referred to informally as the “Wrecking Crew” because of their incredible dominance of the sport. The Two-Speed rear hub transmission is introduced for two years only in the Model 10F. Patented by William S. Harley, it was effective but discontinued in order to further improve drivetrain function in 1915 with a three-speed design. 1915 Harley-Davidson motorcycles are now available with three speed sliding-gear transmissions with final and primary drive on the same side.
