News in Brief Plea to PM – Too Much Red Tape!

Fed up, angry and frustrated that small businesses are being blocked by the planning system - that gives too much priority to vociferous neighbours - Breate and David Braben, of Dudsbury Golf Club, have written to the Prime Minister David Cameron. Breate wrote in her letter “It is not a lack of investment that is holding small businesses and entrepreneurs back, but small minded local councillors, red tape and planning departments”. When you try to Jump the hurdles that are put in front of you by the planning department it just turns into a very demoralising and expensive exercise” We have invested major amounts of time and money “Time after time we have hit the proverbial brick wall”. “Golf Clubs are struggling to survive” she added. Residents have rallied against the continued development of the Club.

Hang Up or Get Caught – Mobile Phones

More Dorset Drivers were caught using their mobile phones at the wheel during the first half of the year than during the same period last year. Brian Austin, project manager of the No Excuse campaign, said police officers had been amazed by the risks drivers are still willing to take.

From the Woodland Trust

The headlines may have stopped, but last week the Woodland Trust submitted an official response to the Independent Forestry Panel. As an original signatory to our petition and someone who helped make Government listen back in January, we wanted to give you a personal copy of our response to the ‘call for views’.

Cover photo: Chris Slocock

Read and share it: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/panel Eight weeks ago the Independent Panel for Forestry - created after the consultation halted - made a ‘call for views’ to the public around the future of our forests. Last weekend the call closed, with over 40,000 responses received. For those of you who had been concerned about sale plans and were relieved when the headlines stopped, the Panel is essentially the next stage of the debate. It is worth remembering that their remit extends far wider than the public estate. It also includes “advise government on a new approach to forestry policy in England, including looking at how woodland cover can be increased and at options for enhancing By the river public benefits from Just off the Square a l l wo o d l a n d s a n d forests”. Kitchen Decorating!

18

This room is where we spend a good amount of our family time creating and enjoying meals, doing homework, and working out life’s problems. The kitchen is the hub of most homes today. It deserves to be thought of as a style show stopper, and there are some quick and inexpensive ways to achieve that without doing a remodel that could cost you thousands. Change the cabinets - Unless you have high quality wood cabinets, paint them! There are so many paint and glaze combinations you could use the varieties are endless. Change the cabinet doors – an easy way to make dramatic changes – There are many suppliers that can do this for example see Dream Doors. Paint the walls - Even though with the cabinets taking up wall space, it seems like painting might not make a big difference…it does! It sets off the cabinets, sets a mood, and reduces that clinical feeling utilitarian spaces can often have. Pick a medium tone to rich wall colour and go for it! (Because it’s a small area of wall space, you can use richer or brighter tones without worrying about it overwhelming the room.)

year. Certainly my three appleIndustries trees are fruiting like never before. I have an eater (Jupiter), a cooker Member of The British Association of Landscape (Bramley’s Seedling?) and a crab apple (John Downey). The crab apples are for jelly and at the moment Cheese: www.garden-scape.co.uk theStephen tree looks so pretty, just covered in bright red apples shaped like pear drops. Both of the other Freephone: trees were heavily pruned last winter, but nevertheless have masses of fruit. Earlier in the year the man from the Royal Horticultural Society advised us to take off all but one apple every six inches!! That takes a strong will, and I haven’t got one. So I have removed dozens and dozens, but left far too many and the boughs are hanging low. I used to have a plum tree and the very first year it cropped really heavily – and I was greedy and didn’t remove many – so a bough broke, silver leaf resulted and the tree died. A moral there. Soft fruit is well worth having: raspberries and blueberries are very easy to grow but so expensive to buy. The easiest raspberry is Autumn Bliss (although it crops in July and August), because it fruits on this year’s growth and after you’ve picked all the fruit you just cut the strong, self-supporting canes down to the ground. Legal Aid for Divorce and Child Care Cases The government has recently announced that Legal Aid for Divorce and Child Care cases will be brought to an end. Individuals will find themselves at a distinct disadvantage when deprived of legal representation or advice, particularly if their partner has the ability to afford legal representation, giving them an unfair advantage.

24

Legal Aid was established in 1949 in order to ensure that people on low incomes would be represented in court. Conservative justice secretary Ken Clarke has now declared that taxpayers can no longer afford the service. As a result people with over £315 in disposable monthly income or £1,000 in savings will now face personal legal bills. Martin Pate, M a n a g i n g Director at MJP Law commented “at MJP Law we see the need to offer the public affordable legal assistance and a payment plan that allows individuals access to specialist family lawyers. We offer affordable payment plans designed to assist individuals who find themselves affected as a result of these changes. These can be discussed during our free initial interviews.” To advertise ring Mark or CJ at The Advertising Hub on 01202 882277

The two finalists will then take part in a live cook-off at Hotel du Vin & Bistro Poole where they will prepare and present a dish of their choice to Head Chef Darren Rockett and a team of expert judges.

The runner-up will receive a place at a cookery class hosted by Darren while the prize for the overall winner will be dinner with their family at Hotel du Vin & Bistro Poole. In addition, the winner will be a star guest at Wimborne Food Festival.

STOP PRESS! We’re up for an award!

Wimborne Food Festival’s meteoric culinary rise continues after it was selected as one of the top three food festivals in the county. Only four years ago the first festival was a oneday event in a marquee. Now it is attracting more than 10,000 visitors over a weekend and some of the country’s most famous chefs come to the town to demonstrate their cooking skills alongside Dorset’s best food producers and culinary experts. That success has seen it reach the top three in the Taste of Dorset Awards in the festival class. The other finalists are Sturminster Cheese Festival and Bridport Food Festival. The winner will be announced on September 2 and organiser Clare Kavanagh said: “We are all very excited to have made it to the last three!

WHAT IS A BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT?

For those of you who do not yet understand what a Business Improvement District (BID) scheme is, here is the best definition I know of. A BID is a business led initiative supported by government legislation which gives local businesses the power to ‘raise funds locally to be spent locally’ thereby improving their trading environment. • Together we will have money to spend on behalf of the Town and our businesses. • Together the businesses in the Town will have more influence and be stronger.

In short, the BID will seek to get the best possible results for Wimborne Businesses in ways hitherto unexploited. The new board of Directors is settling in well and starting work on making things happen. Initially we will be concentrating on bringing more visitors to Wimborne, particularly via coaches - we must make coach drivers and visitors feel welcome to our town. We will also be making particular effort to support traders in the run up to Christmas with activities and events including marketing and promoting the Town in a number of ways. A new website will be developed to help let customers find businesses and information including street maps and business locations.

The part time post of BID Operations manager is expected to be filled in the New Year; in the mean time, BID directors Malcolm Angel and Martin Tidd have been appointed by the board to share that role in the important run up to Christmas. For more information: www.wimbornebid.org Chris Slocock, Chairman, Wimborne BID

The Town’s Views on the Wimborne BID

• Mike @ Colourcraft – I think the BID should be a good medium for promoting Wimborne to the wider area • Minster Sweets – Too early to decide, • Wimborne Photo Centre – Could be very effective in promoting Wimborne, additional signage of King’s Court useful, Good idea • B Inspired – Hopefully be good for the town • Alison Pearce – Good idea • Optique – Expensive, haven’t seen anything done on this side of town yet, wont benefit us. Hoping that the BID comes up with the goods, need to listen to local businesses, bring in the right customers and distribute them correctly.

Reconsider A31 Canford Bottom Improvement Scheme, say Wimborne BID

At the meeting held on 10th August, business people from Wimborne and Ferndown were dismayed to hear about the disruption that would be caused for at least 10 months as a result of the A31 Canford Bottom Junction Improvement scheme. The overall feeling was that the £5.7million scheme was ill thought out and would severely damage businesses in Wimborne. There was anger that a proper detailed consultation was not held with the businesses that might be affected. However, the signing of the contract for the scheme has been delayed for two weeks after the intervention of Annette Brooke and Christopher Chope, the MP’s whose constituencies are affected by the plans. The consensus was that the scheme was a ‘sticking plaster’ solution to a traffic problem that needs to be properly addressed for the long term and not the short term as set out in these proposals. See: www.sedorsetmms.com www.highways.gov.uk/a31canfordbottom For more information: Martin Tidd, Director, Wimborne BID Ltd, 07802 432071.

Business to Business

The Power of Priorities There are two things that business people find very challenging: thinking ahead and doing things in order of importance. Doing these two things well makes the difference between success in business and just surviving. And the same is true for all areas of our lives.

36

Most people have heard of the Pareto Principle, often known as the 80/20 Rule. Roughly stated this says that in most businesses 80% of your business comes from 20 % of your customers. Other examples of the Pareto Principle are: Reading 20 percent of the book contains 80 percent of the content. Job

20 percent of our work gives us 80 percent of our satisfaction.

Products 20 percent of the products bring in 80 percent of the profits. Picnic

20 percent of the people will eat 80 percent of the food!

01202 870196 charliehaddon@actioncoach.com

So – when it comes to what you do, 20 percent of your effort will give you 80 percent of your results - IF you focus your time, energy, money and personnel on the top 20 percent of your priorities. Every business person needs to understand the Pareto Principle as it applies to the areas of customers, team and leadership. In the area of customers, it is vital to identify the 20 percent who account for 80 percent of your business. These are your “raving fans” and strategies must be put in place to care for them appropriately. For your team, you must identify the top 20 percent of producers. Spend 80 percent of your ‘people time’ with these people to develop them to their full potential. In leadership, take an honest look at the question “What do I have to do that no one else can do?” Remember a leader can give up everything except final responsibility. You can decide whether you will be reactive or proactive when it comes to the use of your time. The question is not, “Will I be busy?” but “How will I invest my time?”. It’s not “Will my calendar be full?”, but “Who will fill my calendar?”. It’s not “Will I see people?” but “Who will I see?” Do this and watch your productivity and personal satisfaction rise to new heights!

Charlie Haddon ActionCOACH Business Coach You often hear in business that it’s ‘the early bird that catches the worm’. Well, if you’re someone that loves to crack on with your day and make new business deals before you’ve even had your second cup of coffee, then come along to the next BNI business breakfast at City Lodge Bridge House Hotel at Longham every Wednesday (at 6.30am) you’ll get to enjoy not only a delicious cooked breakfast, but an informal chat about how word-of-mouth marketing can do wonders for your business.

Media giant News Corporation sees its quarterly profits fall 22% on the back of the sale of the MySpace website. 4. Broadstone Players

Broadstone Players are delighted to announce their annual and much looked-forward to evenings of ‘Plays ‘n Chips.’ The evenings take the form of three one-act plays, interspersed with a fish and chip supper in the interval. This year’s Plays ‘n Chips take place on three September evenings – Saturday 3rd, Friday 9th and Saturday 10th in the War Memorial Hall in Broadstone, starting at 7.45pm. This year Val Smith is directing for the first time, with a one-act comedy by David Tristram called “Joining the Club”. A highly successful career woman becomes unexpectedly expectant and her husband has some startling news of his own. There is a cast of two, played by Emma Johnson and Rob Cording. The second one-act play is “A Dog’s Life” by Pam Valentine, directed by Barry Baynton. This touching drama centres around four dogs in a re-homing centre and the parts of dogs and humans are played by Estelle Hughes,Yvonne Roberts, Judy Garrett, Peter Watson, David Brown and Alfie Munro. The third is a new one-act play called “Physcic(sic)” and is written by local playwrights James Leyland and Sue Coussy.Three members of a local Ladies Guild get more than they bargained for when a psychic booked for one of their evenings turns out to be uncannily accurate in this “dead silly” comedy. The cast are played by Tommy Egerton, Beverley Beck, Lauren Homer and Gill Jones. Tickets which include the fish and chip supper (or vegetarian alternative) are available from Broadstone News on the Broadway and cost £9.50 each. Tickets will also be for sale on the door. Broadstone Players look forward to seeing you there!

Framing the image, subject or situation NB This article is NOT about framing your photo for display or hanging!

Effective structure in an image can be achieved where there is an opportunity to frame the subject using features from the surrounding area. Here are a few examples, plus explanations, of different situations where this technique has been used.

40

The beach scene in Western Australia shows people enjoying their leisure time in a variety of ways. By looking at the surrounding area I was able to see the potential of framing the whole scene by placing the trees between camera and beach scene. The silhouetted tree trunks create ‘windows’ through which to view different parts of the scene. Wa t c h i n g t h e s u p p l y ve s s e l approaching its anchorage, I had time to consider the composition and frame the ship between the two large chunks of the Antarctic Ice Shelf; this also puts the ship in context and shows the contrast in size. Note also the choice of cropping to panoramic format removing uninteresting sky and foreground water. With formal or informal photographs of people, again look around for a framing feature that could be a door, gate in wall or fence, tree trunk and branch or just dark areas in the background. Bath Abbey I chose to frame the church tower with a nearby arch with similar architecture.

Photography

So to summarize – look for natural or man-made features to use as ‘frames’ then crop the original to achieve the most effective shape. Remember the general rule is DON’T crop in your camera, save your original image then crop a copy on computer.

Stopping your horse getting too fat is always a problem when the grass is about; putting a muzzle on your horse is better than getting laminitis, although this can be caused by other things such as concussion. Obesity is only one cause but you can do something about it, by fitting a muzzle (shires do a good one £17.99) you restrict the amount of food your horse consumes. If you stop your horse eating completely by putting it in a stable for a few hours it will eat far more when it is turned out. Another way is a starvation paddock but this will become barren and will have the same effect as a stable.

Verwood

In serious cases having your horse put down is the only answer so prevention is better than cure – once they have had laminitis they tend to get it again.

19, Station Road Verwood

There are supplements such as global herbs laminitis prone £26.95 per kg and navilam ‘o’ £ 22.00 both natural products that can be fed when needed. Call Trish on 01202 600550.

The Quartermasters School, a department of HarleyDavidson devoted to training military mechanics on HarleyDavidson motorcycles, opens for business in July. It will later become the Service School.

The sale of Harley-Davidson bicycles begins. Individual components are made by the Davis Sewing Machine Co. of Dayton, Ohio. The bicycles are sold through the H-D dealer continued on p48 network.

1918 Almost half of all Harley-Davidson motorcycles produced are sold for use by the U.S. military in World War I. At War’s end, it is estimated that the Army used some 20,000 motorcycles in their efforts, most of which were Harley-Davidsons. One day after the signing of the Armistice, Corporal Roy Holtz of Chippewa Falls, Wis., is the first American to enter Germany. He is riding a Harley-Davidson. 1919 The 37 cubic inch opposed twin cylinder Sport model is introduced and gains great popularity overseas. Unique not only for the cylinder configuration, which was directly opposed and flat, the Sport earns a reputation for being uncommonly quiet.
