Wimborne’s community hospital has recently seen the opening of a £3.2 million state-of-the-art operating theatre, with 95 per cent of the project funded by The Friends of Victoria Hospital. The new facilities allow the surgeons to perform more than 40 operations a week, including general orthopaedic, oral and gynaecological procedures. President Dr David Pope, said “the friends have been fantastic at harnessing the energy in the community and channelling it into appropriate services.” For more details visit fvhw.org Wetherspoons is Coming to Wimborne! Late night refreshment and alcohol could be served until midnight and 1am respectively. On New Year’s Eve they would be allowed to open until 5am. A new look at Kingston Lacy I had written off visiting Kingston Lacy (apart from a visit to the snowdrops each February): the house is wonderful but I found the grounds too parklike, But my, how it’s changed over the last decade. The first wow is the overwhelming smell of roses in the Rotunda, then you wander through mixed borders, opening out into extensive lawns, down through the Japanese garden, full of bamboo, coloured acers and gorgeous meadows of dog daisies. The woodland has been tamed and a path leads through, over Abbott Street, to the Vegetable Garden. In the 1880s Walter Ralph Bankes had six acres of immaculate vegetable gardens with the latest glasshouse technology and employing twenty men round the clock. Henrietta Bankes had a flower garden there, with an arbour where she could sit and watch people working. The gardeners went off to WWI and the gardens began to deteriorate. In 2008 the National Trust began clearing the site with volunteers … and pigs! Now the flower garden has been re-created, and there are 28 allotments – they plan to have 118 eventually. Their motto is “locally sown, locally grown” and they hope to attract schools, day centres and clubs, Barbara Gooch as well as individuals and families, to work the allotments. It’s inspirational!

Cats Protection Bournem Cats Protection helps to rehome unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens. All of the cats we help come into our care and are looked after in foster homes until they are ready for a new home. During their stay with us, the cats are checked by a vet, receiving any required treatment. All the cats we rehome are microchipped, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, and neutered. In order to ensure we find the right cat for you, we undertake a short home visit, where we can also offer advice about cat care and how to make sure your new cat settles into your home. If you are able to offer a home to some of our cats, please call our homing line on 01202 840543. We are also seeking new fosterers to provide

Business to Business A sober lesson Machiavelli offers us today...

34

01202 870196 charliehaddon@actioncoach.com

“It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more uncertain of success nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new order of things. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institution, and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones.” “The Prince” (written AD 1513).

In the end, we often dream too small and therefore limit our ability to reach desired goals.

Most people consider innovation to be a ‘thing’, rather than a series of ideas, experiments and failures that may lead to something great.

The key factor is time. Building collaboration and broad support demands time; it is an educational process. You need time to change people.

This is the intimidating facet of change: making it stick.

If there is no time – if the urgency is too high – then you are going to have to change people, painful though that is. In other words, you will have to replace them! You’ll have to identify the people who will fight you and you’ll have to remove them or isolate them. This is the hard way, and this is why its always best to act early.

Human nature tries to minimize the risk of making it stick by reducing the scale of change that is required. In order to make a change, we try to change less than we ought, and therefore do not achieve the full change we aspire toward. Since it is easier to make these smaller changes, we continue to make these changes. However, in the long run, small change is not enough change – when it comes to accomplishing our goals.

The challenge is creating stakeholders in the new order and neutralizing or eliminating those holding onto the old way. But how? Well, you either change the people, or you change the people..!

Go to it !

Fair Ground stocks hundreds of fairly traded goods from coffee to women’s clothing, chocolate to jewellery, babywear to crafts, gifts and cards. As fair trade grows on the high street and on the supermarket shelves, there’s still room for a friendly independent shop with enthusiastic staff for those ethical purchases which will go a long way towards building a fairer world. Over 3.000 products bear the fair-trade mark and total sales in Britain exceed one billion pounds a year, but that’s less than 1% of overall trade.

Photography

Wide-angle and Telephoto lens effects

Zooming out to wide angle or zooming in to telephoto has several effects on the composition of the image. Use your feet - Moving nearer or further away from the subject and altering the length of the lens gives more control over image interpretation. Wide-angle – more of the picture is in focus from foreground to distance as illustrated in the photo of the lake and mountain. All is sharp from the foreground rocks to the distant peaks. Notice also the use of a low viewpoint (discussed last month). This produces foreground interest, which is essential with wide-angle shots, and reduced empty sky. The mountains also look to be a long way away because wide angle stretches distance. Distant objects appear small in the picture. Telephoto lenses bring the background closer to the subject, make distant objects appear larger e.g. great to make mountains appear as mountains not pimples on the horizon. The background is thrown out of focus so no detail can distract from the subject as with the Meerkat also the horse on the front cover. To summarize compare the two photos of the car and ship. In each the car is the same size, but with a telephoto lens there is less ship, which looks close to the car, whereas the wide-angle shot shows more ship appearing to be further away from the car. Wide-angle – foreground interest to avoid empty boring area, great depth of field, sense of distance. Telephoto – shallow depth of field, distance brought nearer.
