There are quite a few small jobs that a DIY’ers should be able to tackle however this is limited more these days with new law which came into effect in 2005. The law was introduced both to weed out cowboy electricians and also try to prevent incompetent DIY’ers from carrying out potentially dangerous electrical work.

Christmas is Coming ! Great Santa Fun Run 2011
Once again the Wimborne Rotary has organised an exciting family event for Sunday 11th Dec for a “Great Santa Fun Run” which will take place at Badbury Rings, Wimborne. Last year lots of children and adults took part and raised £6000 for their nominated charity. The entry fee for adults is £10 and £6 for children aged 8-14. This pays for a Santa Suit to compete in (which the contestant then keeps) and helps to defray expenses. The balance will go to a local charity.

Adults and children over the age of 8 will be able to select which course they wish to walk, jog or run. They range from 1 mile to 4 miles. Orange and Polenta Cake by Charlotte Pike Go Free Foods www.gofreefoods.co.uk (Wheat and gluten free, and can be dairy free by using the substitutions) Ingredients: 250g butter/soya spread 250g caster sugar 3 eggs, large
100g polenta 250g ground almonds 2 large oranges
Method: 1. Place the oranges in a pan, cover with water and place on the hob to boil for two hours.Top up the water from time to time to keep them covered. 2. After two hours turn off the heat and leave the fruit to cool in the pan. 3. Preheat oven to 140c Fan/160c/Gas Mark 3. 4. Grease and line a 23cm round springform tin. 5. Cream together the butter and sugar. 6. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. 7. Add the polenta and ground almonds and mix well.
29 8. Take the cooled oranges and place in a food processor/blender and blitz, skin, pith and all. 9. Add the remaining blitzed oranges to the cake and mix till thoroughly combined. 10. Place in the oven and bake for approx 1 hour, check the cake after 30 minutes and if it is browning on top too quickly cover with foil and return to the oven to finish baking. 11. Allow to cool in the tin.

In our community Mayor’s Blindfold Walkabout
International World Sight Loss day was marked in Wimborne when the Mayor, Robin Cook , was escorted blindfold around the town by members of the Wimborne & Ferndown Lions club.

The walkabout highlighted the importance of sounds and smells (no problem identifying the bakery!) and the many obstacles in a busy town centre such as people, bollards and advertising A-frames on the pavement. In addition to the walkabout, the Lions also marked the occasion with the presentation of a brailler to Tina Douglas who is registered blind. The brailler is essentially a typewriter which produces the raised dots of the Braille alphabet using a special 10-key keyboard.

The presentation was made courtesy of Waitrose in the entrance to their superstore in Wimborne. There are over 5000 registered blind and partially sighted people in Dorset alone and it’s suggested that 25% of people over 50 are likely to suffer some sight loss in their maturing years. October was a busy month for The Community Learning & Resource Centre (CLaRC) Half term started off with a celebration of all things Culinary with Wimborne’s annual Food Festival with the Centre providing the venue for the Tops Fun Food Factory.This was followed by Wimborne’s first Literacy Festival where local authors and illustrators were holding sessions to speak about their work, offer signings or just chat over a coffee. November is the last full month before the Christmas break with all the courses in full swing. If you fancy learning Italian or Biology or increasing you stamina through Yoga then why not come in and find out more. There are various methods of creating silhouettes. Your camera may have a silhouette scene mode built in. If so this is a good starting point. Another method is to use the ‘±ev’ button if your camera has one, if not check the menu selection. Change the exposure to -2 to deliberately underexpose. If there is a large light background, the process is much simpler as the camera will probably auto-expose for the whole scene resulting in a very dark or black subject. Be aware that some cameras in this situation will want to fire the flash. You need to know where the control is to turn it off. What People lose their personal identity in silhouette pictures but become symbolic with different poses. Examples would be head and shoulders with hands raised in praying position or two shapes walking hand in hand towards a sunset. Such images can add variety and impact even to family albums.

The illustrations this month are mostly of objects, different types of object with one including a small group of people. Silhouettes emphasize shape and often include a lot of texture because they are mostly lit from behind. Black and white, also sepia are options worth trying. Silhouettes in any set of images add variety and are well worth trying so next time you use a camera have a go.

We are now thinking about the coming winter months and if we should rug or not rug our horses to keep them warm and dry. I have a rug cleaning and repairing service at the shop and over the years have seen rugs sent in for cleaning and repair in such a state that I wonder if they are worth doing, when you can get a new one so cheaply now. Often I see heavy tog rugs put on unclipped horses and ponies; they get too hot in this strange weather we get now, one minute hot and sunny then cold wind and rain. Often they try to get the rug off by rubbing along fences or rolling sometimes getting their legs tangled in straps and surcingles hence ripping the rugs. Horses do not all feel the cold as we do, it may make you feel better to over rug your horse but not necessarily your horse; when you see a horse shivering in the rain this is often a reflex they use to keep warm. If your horse is not clipped, not old, or ill it probably will not need a rug. If you need to have your horse dry to exercise just use a summer waterproof rug with no filling; this will keep him clean and dry without overheating. Remember to have the leg straps and surcingles short enough so that they do not get tangled with legs when the horse is lying down or rolling.

Hedgehog alert for bonfire season
As bonfire night approaches, it is important to spare a moment to consider the impacts of bonfires on our wildlife. Many a bonfire may conceal a sleeping or hibernating hedgehog, and can prove fatal. In order to survive the winter, hedgehogs hibernate from around November to March and in the autumn they start to prepare their hibernation nests. They collect garden materials like twigs and leaves for nests, and are hugely partial to dry, warm piles of wood, hence a ready-made bonfire will seem like a perfect site for a sleepy hedgehog. When assembling your bonfire, it is best to do this away from the actual site and to move it on the night of lighting it. Build the fire as close to the night as possible, and double check carefully for hedgehogs at the last minute, by using a torch. You can also build hedgehog boxes or rake together piles of leaves, placing them away from the bonfire, in the hope that the hedgehog will choose to hibernate there instead. Hedgehogs are important for our gardens as they provide free and natural pest control by eating slugs. They are already on the decline due to several threats they face, including habitat loss, and your garden may well be providing a welcome refuge for them. Sadly, every year many die unnecessarily on bonfire night. These simple measures will only take a moment and can make a big difference by saving a hibernating
