Allendale Community Centre Under Threat?

Concerned residents and users of the Allendale centre met recently to hear of proposed changes to the lease arrangements on the building being proposed by East Dorset, which owns the building. Committee members say the centre has been run successfully for over 33 years providing a valuable facility for a wide range of activities, with 100,000 users annually, including Wimborne Rotary Club. But EDDC want to introduce a new agreement and have threatened to withdraw funding support for this important community centre if it is not implemented. Committee members believe the proposed changes threaten the future of the community centre and are related to the recent Core Strategy review that has proposed the possibility of the removal of town centre car parking adjacent to the centre and the demolition of the Allendale building with the market coming into the town centre. Further meetings and discussions are planned to try and resolve the conflict. Do you want to see a community centre retained in Wimborne? Email adhub@printsolutions.co.uk

The Budget has come and gone, what did you think, let us know?

According to George Osborne his 2011 Budget was designed to not only revitalise the economy but also revitalise a society feeling the effects of rising inflation, fuel rises, pay freezes and public spending cuts. But will it work? Personal allowances have been increased by £1,000 to £7,475; the normal inflation-based increase would have been £310 (to £6,785). This is part of a strategy to raise the threshold for income tax to £10,000 and so remove low earners from the tax system altogether.

Some specific changes have also been introduced to help small businesses employing less than 10 employees, from the burden of new red tape and corporation Tax is down by 2% to try and boost businesses and pull us out of the recession. The small business rate relief holiday was due to end later this year but it has been extended by a further year from 1 October 2011 - that has to be welcome news. But we are also hearing of a lot of criticism of the banks – not supporting small businesses and enterprise, the Government seem powerless to influence and did not appear to address this in the budget, please write and let us know your views of the banks. From our experience many businesses have not found the banks supportive in lending and that lack of support is having a real affect on investment and business development! RED SQUIRRELS

There are at present approximately 200-250 red squirrels on Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour, but numbers fluctuate from year to year.

The squirrels are most active in spring and autumn around sunrise and sunset. They can be found in all the wooded areas of the island. However, they are very shy and can be difficult to spot, especially in the hot summer months. Partly-eaten cones may be the only clues; they feed on seeds in the cones all year round. Brownsea, feautured on BBC’s Autumn watch, is described by Bill Oddie ‘as the best place for seeing wildlife in Dorset.’ Visit: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-brownsea_island Please mention The District Directory.biz – Reach 70,000 every month – when responding to advertisers

Photo - Brownsea Island: Neil Bichard

Almost extinct in Southern England, the red squirrel is the most important pine feeding creature on Brownsea, where there are no competing grey squirrels.

Many of the south of England’s most talented model makers will gather for the Poole Vikings Model Club annual show. Exhibits will include everything from aeroplanes to ships and dioramas. A major model competition is also a part of the event, while sellers of model kits, books and accessories will also be present. The Poole Vikings themselves will put on a large display, illustrating their status as one of the country’s premier modelling associations. Amongst the traders in attendance will be local publisher The Minster Press from Wimborne, whose series of aircraft books under the ‘Plane Essentials’ label has been a great success. At this year’s Poole show the Wimborne-based technical artist John Batchelor, and Poolebased aviation writer and historian Malcolm Lowe, both from ‘Plane Essentials’, will be present and available for book signings.

Unit 4, 13 Cobham Rd Ferndown Industrial Estate Wimborne Dorset BH21 7PE Tel: 01202 874207 Email: mail@sandandgravel.uk.com April is all about daffodils.... .... even though some species have been out since February. I favour the smaller ones and there are a few places still, in Dorset, where the wild one (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) can be found. I love their golden trumpets with paler petals. Narcissus Hawera is another favourite - dainty, multi-headed and lemon yellow. They will take more shade than tulips and need feed as they are dying back, building up the bulbs for next year. It’s only when the days get longer and warmer that I get back to gardening so now is catch-up time: sewing seeds, weeding, potting on cuttings, splitting perennials, and still the feeding and pruning which should have been done long ago. (“When you can, not when you should”, said Christopher Lloyd.) Some plants failed to survive the winter or put on such a poor show last year that they are headed for the compost heap. How lovely to have gaps in the borders and to go shopping! The Hardy Plant Society Spring Plant Fayre on May 14th, at 2.30 p.m., in Colehill Memorial Hall is the place to find both the unusual and your old favourites at bargain prices. And before that, the internationally-known Paul Picton will speak to the HPS about his National Collection of Asters on April 9th. Barbara Gooch

As the Government announces the formation of an independent panel of forestry experts as part of the planned review of forestry policy in England, the Woodland Trust is challenging both the group and Government to a six point test for effectiveness and accountability. The Woodland Trust welcomes the opportunity to be part of the independent panel of experts charged with examining England’s forestry policy in the light of the recent debate on public forest estate sales, and is pleased it has a broad remit which includes issues about which the Trust cares passionately. The Royal Wedding

24

Everybody knows that Prince William and Catherine Middleton will marry at Westminster Abbey on Friday, 29 April. It will be Britain’s biggest wedding since Charles and Diana’s 30 years ago and an estimated two million well wishers are expected to turn out to cheer the couple. And the big day will be a perfect birthday gift for the Queen, who turns 85, and Prince Philip, who reaches 90 next year. A national Bank holiday has been declared. THE VENUE The choice is Westminster Abbey, even though it was the scene of Diana’s funeral, as well as the Queen Mother’s. The Abbey, where the Queen married in 1947, holds around 2,000 guests. GUESTS Royalty including ancient European dynasties such as Sweden, Spain, Norway, Holland and Denmark will attend. Heads of State will be there although not some wives and first ladies. One exception may be US President Barack Obama who is likely to bring wife Michelle. Celebrities could include singers who have performed for the Prince’s Trust, such as Phil Collins, Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney and Bryan Adams. Radio host Fearne Cotton may get an invite after interviewing the Prince. Kate’s family will sit at the front and other guests will include friends and armed forces colleagues. THE RING William will give his bride a wedding ring made from rare Welsh gold - just like his father and grandfather. All recent royal wedding rings have been made from the same nugget of Clogau gold given to the

Royal Family in 1923. The gold was extracted at the St David’s mine in Bontddu, Snowdonia. BEST MAN Prince William has chosen his brother Harry to be his best man, while Kate Middleton’s sister Philippa will be her maid of honour.Among their four bridesmaids and two page boys will be two of Prince William’s godchildren. MARITAL HOME William and Kate will continue to live at their cottage near the prince’s RAF base in North Wales. When they stay in London they will use his apartment in St James’s Palace. In the longer term, it is believed a house will be built for the couple at Harewood Park, a Duchy of Cornwall estate in Herefordshire. HONEYMOON The royal couple are expected to spend part of their honeymoon in New Zealand with a visit to Australia. THE DRESS Issa, the fashion line of Brazilian designer Danielle Helayel, has become Kate’s favourite choice. She wore one of her dresses for the announcement of the wedding and seems likely to commission a wedding dress, which could cost as much as £10,000. However, there may be pressure on her to opt for a British designer as she is expected to fly the flag on her special day.

Bouquets of f l o w e r s h av e been carried by brides the world over for centuries and it’s a tradition that holds firm to the present day. Whilst many modern brides may opt for a more simple composition of beautiful roses, 25 there have been many other styles that were in vogue over the years from a lavish shower style bouquet as favoured by Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981 to large cascades of carnations and asparagus fern in the 1920s and 30s. Whatever the period, and whatever the style, bridal flowers will always form a major part of the big day and it can be assured that Kate Middleton’s choice of bridal flower and style of bouquet will be in vogue for many years to come! Subject Placement

The layout of a picture’s content, design or composition, can make or break the viewers’ response. Some pictures work and others are disappointing. Knowing a few basics builds confidence and control at the taking stage. This month I shall introduce the ideas of thirds, diagonals, circle and groups.

26

Usually placing the subject in the centre of the frame is less effective than when offset. This is often referred to as the ‘rule of thirds’ which is more a guide than a rule and best illustrated with a diagram. Placing the subject at one of the four intersections gives a good balance to the image. The example picture of the horses at Christchurch illustrates this point. Splitting foreground, middle and sky into thirds sometimes works but doing this with every image is monotonous and deliberately breaking the rule can often result in a more dynamic image. I find that many of my photos don’t fit this idea! Looking at diagonals can often be more effective as a guide to effective composition. If there is a diagonal in the image, imagine the opposite, corner to corner, diagonal and place the subject at the intersection of the lines. The French greengrocer shop shows how this works. The eye moves around the scene but the focal point is the box of melons at the crossing of the diagonals. A circular subject is usually best placed in the centre of the image as with the photo of the garden spider. Effective g rouping of subjects partly depends on the number of objects in the image. We are subconsciously influenced by the natural number sequence identified by the mathematician Fibonacci. This concept also relates to other activities such as flower arranging. The next number in the sequence is the total of the two previous numbers – 1;2;3;5;8 etc. any of these combinations is ideal in an image (5 in the moon eclipse image). Arranging and placing the subject with be discussed next month. Happy shooting.

After a chat with Ian at Oakley Butchers and some advice, our meat was ordered and due for delivery on Friday. Our Plan was Rib Eye Steak with Blue Cheese Sauce.

32

INGREDIENTS • 2-4 tablespoons butter or amount to suit personal taste • salt to taste • pepper to taste • 1 large Onion • 3/4 to 1 cup double cream • 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese - we chose Gorgonzola • 2 – 8-10 oz Rib Eye Steaks (ours were on the large side) We first marinated the steaks in garlic, sea salt and red wine and allowed them to settle to room temperature. We heated a heavy metal skillet and cooked the steaks in butter for about 3 minutes (or as preferred) each

side and then stood in a warm oven for a few minutes, again timings to as to personal taste. Blue Cheese Sauce Sauté onions in 2-4 tablespoons butter over high heat. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, or until dark and caramelized. • Reduce heat to simmer and pour in cream. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until reduced by half. • Stir in blue cheese until melted. (consistency to suit personal taste) • Serve steaks with a generous portion of sauce Served with Vegetables of your choice – We chose Broccoli tips with spiced potato wedges cooked in the oven and sliced chestnut mushrooms.

Business to Business

Are you a good leader ?

01202 870196 charliehaddon@actioncoach.com

Good leaders, some experts say, are creative rather than reactive. In other words, they anticipate future demands & trends and make new products or tailor the ones they already have to suit that future. Test Yourself: Are You a Creative or a Reactive Leader? In an article in Fast Company magazine (“The Secret Life of the CEO”), Jim Collins (author of “Good to Great”) wrote that the best leaders don’t focus as much on beating the competition as they do on making their own products and services better than they were before.

34

Creative business leaders are always asking themselves the following questions: • What do potential customers really need, now? • What worries them? • What causes them pain? • What would they be eager to buy?” • How can I make our current customers happier? • How can we make the products we sell better? ALL ANGLES PLUMBING • More useful? • More valuable? FOR A SUPERIOR SERVICE Do you ask yourself these questions? Regularly? PAUL GOODRIDGE And if you do, do you come up with not just good, All plumbing work undertaken from a dripping tap rather great answers, answers that can advance to a complete bathroom your business? Test your creative skills against the Leadwork, guttering work and following checklist: tiling also undertaken Ask yourself…are you: Highly competitive pr ices • internally driven Senior citizen discounts • focused on the work, not politics • goal-oriented, rather than crisis-centered 01202 604932 • a good relationship builder goodridpa@aol.com Ask yourself…do you: • make full use of your strongest talents • set aggressive long-term goals The above are all characteristics of creative leaders. Here are the traits of “reactive” leaders. They generally: • are motivated by external factors like money and power • are focused on corporate politics, not the work • allow their time to be dictated by what’s in their inbox • sometimes ignore their strongest talents in favor of “good management” • plan in one- to five-year increments • believe nothing is sacred and relationships are expendable How many of those reactive characteristics apply to you? How would you grade yourself? The best leaders are indeed long-term oriented, people-friendly, loyal, eager to provide better products & services, and unconcerned about where they stand in just about any pecking order…either in their industry or within their business. And that’s something to think about… Charlie Haddon ActionCOACH Business Coach

Spring Forward By way of introduction, my name is Simon Grimston; I am a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Living and working in Wimborne. Grimston Accounting Practice is a new business offering accounting services to clients in the surrounding area. The nature of the business is to provide individuals, sole traders and businesses with support and advice for all their accounting matters. Now spring is officially here, what better time to launch a business. Longer, brighter days and warmer weather are both welcome and provide a much needed uplift, however, nature is one thing and cold economic reality, is another. Home and world markets have been in turmoil. There is the effect of the disaster in Japan, an unsettled Middle East, fluctuations in commodity prices, particularly oil, together with the UK government’s ongoing efforts to bail us out of billions of pounds worth of debt. There is a direct and very profound personal and business impact being felt. The UK economy has taken a major knock and is now officially in recession, the first time for 16 years. Interest rates remain flat at 0.5%, not good news for savers and pensioners or anybody on fixed income. Compounded by increased inflation, retail price inflation (RPI) is at 5.7%, adding the effect of tax rises will push it higher still. The barometer of UK economic health, the stock market FTSE 100, has fallen 8% to below 5600 from its year high of almost 6100. Enough gloom. Markets will improve over time as they follow their own natural cycle, markets go up and markets go down. Right now, it is important to position oneself or business to weather the storms ahead. That is where sensible budgeting and planning can help. To some this may be simple arithmetic, to others an impenetrable fog, where they are unable to see the way forward and unsure of the steps to take. Being over budget may be problematic but being under budget is always a pleasant surprise. This is where a review with a qualified accounting professional may help, offering tailored help and relevant advice. Grimston Accounting Practice provides for all your accounting matters. Services covered: Compliance - Self Assessment and Company Returns; Advice – start ups and going concerns; Tax - personal or company; Management Reports – budgets and business plans; Risk Management - review of assets, liabilities, income and expenditure. Please contact Simon Grimston for a FREE initial appointment. Available normal office hours, evenings and weekends subject to availability. Phone 07990 737026 and email simongrimston.sg@gmail.com. Wishing you all a very happy Easter.

Be the best! DIY training academy launches Dorset-based First Cover Decorating has launched a new department. The First Cover Academy is aimed at those who have little or no decorating experience. The course works through the fundamentals of DIY to equip attendees with enough knowledge so that they can either go on to decorate their own properties, or even progress to the professional master classes. The Academy comes after careful consideration from owners, Jackie and Keith Saunders. Jackie commented; “Over the years we have employed many apprentices and school leavers, and found that they flourish under Keith’s tuition. The hands-on training we give has proved to be popular with those who want to learn about the trade, so we decided to make more of this aspect.” With home improvements on the rise, the First Cover Decorating Academy will run a variety of day time and evening classes; perfect for those who are looking to tackle the redecoration of their own homes. Content will include tuition on topics such as; different paints to use, how to hang wall paper correctly, painting window frames and choosing a colour scheme. If you’d like more information on this, contact First Cover Decorating Academy on 01202 877097 or visit www.firstcoverdecorating.co.uk/academy

A 5 mile walk with great views. It has an optional steep climb up the 204 steps to St Alban’s/St Aldhelm’s Head on the main route. This can be avoided with a small detour. How to get there: - Grid Ref 974777;Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village (there is a small parking fee). Walk details: As you leave the car park, turn right for about 70 metres and then take the path signposted ‘Church and Hill Bottom 1 mile’. Follow this through the gate and field until you reach the left-hand corner. Here turn right and follow the hedge/wall for about ½ mile until you meet a T junction. Turn left and follow the path towards Hill Bottom. Just before reaching the houses, turn left through the kissing gate (1/3 mile). You are now on the Coast Path. Supplements – Should I Bother?

40

I expect at some point in time you have seen advertisements for protein shakes, creatine powder or energy drinks and possibly wondered; do they work? The key point to note is that supplements are there to supplement, i.e. to co-exist alongside a well structured exercise programme and diet. They are not magic ingredients that should take neither the place of good natural food. So with that in mind, are supplements beneficial to use when training and eating well. Yes….As long as they are the right ones for you! All supplements should be taken only after a consultation with your physician, just to be sure that the ingredients within will not have a personal adverse effect.

See how you get on just eating right and training right for you. If you are making the progress you want then great, keep at it and then consider supplements if you want to try and make further strides. If you are starting out and not making progress, consider changing your diet and training first before supplementing. Remember, supplements function best when your diet and training are already working well. Here at The Junction we sell many different supplements and can provide info about how they work and in what way they may be beneficial for you. Luke Andrews Fitness Manager @ The Junction
