Member of The British Association of Landscape Industries salvias, and most of those would be on their way out. I have a fair number plants that flower up to the first frost, but obviously StephenofCheese: www.garden-scape.co.uk with less exuberance than at their peak. We suggested they visit Freephone: gardens on their return, to see what’s about, but that’s not so easy – the NGS has very few open in October, mainly Edmondsham for its masses of cyclamen and wonderful protected walled garden. We suggested they ‘Chelsea chop’ their plants before leaving in July, i.e. cutting them back in May to force them to flower later. What we forgot to mention were colourful leaves, fruits and berries. Maples, liquidamber, rosy crab apples, hips and haws are looking wonderful at the moment, euonymus (pictured), elderberries, viburnums – all should be waiting for them on their return unless of course the birds get there first.
