NEWS in BRIEF WAR ZONE – New 87 bedroom hotel planned. Vandals and arsonists have wrecked the Former Dormy hotel in Ferndown which closed 6 years ago. A new hotel with two restaurants and a spa may be rebuilt with 18 family homes a 152 bed care complex and 6 affordable houses. The site is still owned by the De Vere group. LIBRARY SERVICES FACE CUTS - Dorset County Council seeks to save £40m from its spending within 3 years. Paul Leivers, Dorset County Council’s head of cultural services said every one of the county’s libraries could be affected by the proposals. Public consultation on options will take place. POLICE BRACED TO LOSE 1,400 jobs – in Hampshire. Dorset police deny any current plans for similar cuts but admits officer numbers are falling because of an ongoing recruitment freeze. FUTURE PLANS FOR EAST DORSET - This Autumn EDDC holds a 12 week consultation for the core strategy – the new local plan for East Dorset. They want as many local people as possible to get involved and have their say. Visit the Council’s website www.dorsetforyou.com/348323

Christmas is coming even though many of us are probably not prepared!

Main Cover photo: Chris Slocock

But Christmas should be a happy time – an occasion where families meet up and share experiences, an opportunity to put aside differences, take a break from everyday pressures and relax. “Thanks for life” is a project involving the clubs and members of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI), to highlight the humanitarian work of Rotarians with a number one aim of helping to eradicate polio throughout the world.

The first phase of the project, in the 12 months to April 2010 raised over £1 million, involved thousands of schools around the country and most of the 1,850 Rotary clubs across RIBI. An amazing start! The second phase of the project aims to build on that success - and will culminate in thousands of events on and around Rotary Day February 23rd 2011. Left: Crocus planting at Waitrose - see the story on page 36. We want to hear from you, so let us know about your anniversary your special event. What you are doing in the community! The VIP team – Town Crier, Chris Brown - Wimborne in Bloom, Anthony Oliver MBE – Scouts, Mike Downton – Rotary President Howard Smith – Mayor of Wimborne, Cllr Terry Wheeler – Event organiser, Rotarian Stephen Protheroe & Manager of Wimborne Waitrose, Ian Burdekin

Urban otters join foxes and squirrels in Britain’s towns and cities They were driven to the edge of extinction by pollution, but now otters are staging a comeback that is seeing them even move into Britain’s towns and cities. A wildlife survey has found that otters are following species such as foxes and squirrels by adopting an urban lifestyle. They can be found in town gardens, parks and churchyards around the country, according to the findings of the sixth annual survey of mammals living in towns and cities, conducted by members of the People’s Trust for Endangered Species and Mammal Trust UK. An otter was filmed in the centre of Bristol earlier this year, while there have been reports of the creatures being seen feeding in major cities including Birmingham, Manchester and even in London in the Thames and River Lee. The Wildlife Trusts estimate that otters are now established in at least 13 towns and cities across the country, and say they have had reports of sightings in 100 other urban locations. Let us know if you have seen otters near you!

LIVING CHURCHYARDS COMPETITION 2010 Success has once again been achieved in the Living Churchyards Competition by two local Churches, The Minster Church of St. Cuthburga, Wimborne Minster and St. Michael and All Angels Church, Colehill. The Prizegiving for the 2010 Competition was held on Saturday at the headquarters of the Dorset Wildlife Trust which organises the Competition and Certificates were presented by the Venerable Patrick Evans, former Archdeacon of Canterbury, who now lives in Dorset. Wimborne Minster entered the Competition with God’s Acre, an area of land to the east end of the Minster and gained the Runner Up Prize in the New Entry Category. The Judges comment was “A fine example of how a wild life area can provide a pleasant area to pause for a moment in the centre of town”. Christine Oliver, one of a small group of Parishioners at the Minster said “we have been working on God’s Acre for over two years to transform the piece of ground to a natural environment for wildlife and making it a peaceful and tranquil area for the public to enjoy. It is the second year that we have entered the Living Churchyards Competition. Last year we gained a Very Highly Commended so it is good to have improved on that result”. St. Michaels, which have been taking part in the competition for a number of years also improved on their last years result of a Highly Commended by gaining a Very Highly Commended Certificate in the Best Managed Category. The Judges comment recorded “that it was encouraging to see the return of St. Michael and All Angels and its community approach to managing this Churchyard for the benefit of wildlife”.

Marine Litter Marine litter consists of man made objects found in the coastal and marine environment. These are items that have been discarded accidentally or carelessly, and their many sources include fishing and other commercial vessels, household and industrial waste and objects discarded by the public, beach goers and tourists. They are predominantly made of persistent, slowly degradable Rubbish collected at Worbarrow Bay materials such as glass, polystyrene, metal and plastic. The Photo: Bryan Whiting latter, according to the Marine Conservation Society’s Beachwatch campaign, forms about 50% of all litter and may remain indefinitely! Marine litter is not just unsightly, but a major ecological and economical problem. It is costly to clean up and extremely detrimental to wildlife. The biggest dangers are ingestion and entanglement, and it is estimated that 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and one million seabirds are killed every year by litter. Balloons are particularly fatal to turtles, which mistake them for jellyfish and eat them. Even tiny filter-feeding animals ingest small plastic particles and toxic chemicals which accumulate as they travel up the food chain. The rapidly increasing problem of marine litter is a global one. It has been reported by the Marine Conservation Society that even on Dorset beaches, marine litter is alarmingly on the increase, affecting our wildlife. It is important that everyone helps safeguard our coastal environment by taking simple measures: making sure that household waste and plastic are properly disposed of or recycled, never using the toilet as a bin and by purchasing fewer items with unnecessary packaging. Those seeking to ‘do their bit for marine life’ are welcome to volunteer on the bi-annual beach cleans we organise. For more information about marine volunteering, see www. dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk or ring the Marine Officers on 01929 481044. Niina Silvennoinen

Unit 4, 13 Cobham Rd Ferndown Industrial Estate Wimborne Dorset BH21 7PE Tel: 01202 874207 Email: mail@sandandgravel.uk.com Plants for Shade Last month’s Hardy Plant Society’s talk was on Plants for Shade. I found it particularly interesting as I so often wander round the garden with a plant pot in my hand, looking for a spot that is sunny for most of the day. So many plants need these conditions (along with that miracle soil, moist but well-drained), but most of my garden is in shade some of the time. Trees and shrubs of course, and the house, fences, sheds, garage, all cast shade. The speaker listed dozens of plants that prefer shade and dozens that will tolerate it, whose flowers will last longer in shade than in sun. A really beautiful one is Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’. It has heart-shaped frosty silver leaves with green veins and edges and flowers like a large forget-me-not in spring. The foliage alone makes it well worth having and it looks wonderful planted right up to the trunks of trees or shrubs. Another one, if you like spiky plants, is Liriope muscari, one of those invaluable plants that flowers for weeks and looks good when not in flower, especially the variegated version. It thrives and spreads best in fertile acid soil under the dappled shade of deciduous trees. Barbara Gooch.

How to make the most of adverts

01202 870196 charliehaddon@actioncoach.com

Q I’m not getting a great response from my advertising - how can I improve it ? A There are three main areas to think about when producing an advert. Firstly, your target market - whom do you want to reach ? Secondly, your offer - what offer will you make to get your audience interested in your product or service ? And thirdly, the copy of the advert - the words you actually use in the advert itself. So let’s consider giving an importance score to each of these three areas, with ten as most important and one as least important. In our community 5000 purple crocus bulbs...

36

On 2nd Oct over 50 people took part in planting 5000 purple crocus bulbs to raise awareness of Rotary’s “Thanks for Life” campaign to help eradicate POLIO in the world. With the kind cooperation of Mr Ian Burdekin - Manager of Wimborne Waitrose, the Rotary Club of Wimborne organised the planting of the bulbs in the parkland setting surrounding the store. Howard Smith - President of Wimborne Rotary said, “I am immensely proud that children of the Waitrose staff, scouts, supporters of Wimborne in Bloom, general public and even two Community Police Officers helped us with this task.” For those wishing to make a donation to the Polio Eradication Campaign, cheques should be made payable to “Wimborne Rotary - Polio” and sent to Allendale Community Centre, for the attention of President Howard Smith or handed in to Brian Dryden Electrical shop in Wimborne Square.

Jurassic Jaunts – Swanage East Route 1 A 2½ mile walk with 2 short strenuous sections but this walk is well worth the effort with great views of Swanage and Poole Harbour How to get there: - Grid Ref 022809; On approaching Corfe Castle from Wareham, turn left for Studland just after the National Trust car park. After 3½ miles, just before Purbeck Golf Club, take the right turn, signposted Swanage 2½ miles. At the next junction, turn right for Swanage and park in the lay-bye with the large stone plinth saying ‘Welcome to Swanage’. Walk details:- On the left, near the start of the lay-bye, take the small swing gate. Fork right here and take the steep 100m ascent to the level path. Turn right and continue along the path for 400 metres. Cross the stile taking you into the National Trust Ballard Down area and continue ahead, giving you excellent views across Swanage to your right. Avoid any forks to your left and after another 400m, ensure you drop down through a small tree arch to meet another path (here you will have a gate to your right to Swanage). Turn left here and ascend towards the Ridgeway of Ballard Down (250m). Take in the views across Swanage and the bay. As the path levels off at the top, turn sharp left and walk up to the top of the Ridgeway. At the Ridgeway you will get a panoramic view of Poole Harbour as well as Swanage. You now need to turn left and head along the Ridgeway towards the masts in the distance. Follow the path through the gate and drop down, past the Obelisk and follow the path down to the road. Cross the road carefully and turn left, walking down the grass verge for about 300m. For the following 300m, you will need to walk on the right-hand side of the road until you meet the road junction on your right. Cross the road into the small open area (signpost here for the Coast path 1¾ miles), go over the stile, and after about 20 metres, follow the footpath sign to your right. Continue along the path for 400m, through the gate, and about 30m after the gate, fork right and follow the path down to the lay-by. Jurassic Jaunts 07790 474 478 © Jurassic Jaunts AP 2010

Photographing Autumn and Nature

Autumn is a great time to get out and enjoy our wonderful Dorset scenery. Always travel with a camera. Here I shall give ideas for colour and fungi. Colour After rain, dew or early mist, vegetation is damp and colours are saturated, particularly when the sun comes out. These are ideal conditions for photographing the glorious autumn colours. Backlighting (when the light is behind the subject) is again, as in many situations I have covered in previous articles, very effective as the thinning leaves of trees can let some light through enhancing the colour. There is a great variety with green and red dominating the palette. If both these colours dominate the scene, try to have them in equal balance as this is more appealing to the eye. Leaves on trees or on the ground can be effectively photographed from a distance or close up. Even part of a single backlit leaf can be very photogenic. Compact cameras are ideal tools for close-up photography as they can focus very close to the subject showing small details and have good depth of field (what is in focus from front to back of a subject). This brings me to the second idea this month – photographing fungi. Fungi There are over 400 different types of large fungus growing in this country and as a natural history subject are ideal for the beginner as they do not run or fly away when approached and most don’t flap about in the breeze. There are two approaches. One is to photograph a single fruiting body or a small group or cluster as a portrait, the other is to use a wide-angle zoom setting on the camera and include the environment as well as the subject. Don’t forget composition. A single round subject is often best in the centre of the frame but when including the surroundings, place the subject to the side of the frame either low or high in the photo. Try different compositions with the same subject to decide which you prefer. Viewpoint is also important. Instead of looking down at the subject, photograph it from ground level to give it status. This will probably mean getting down yourself, so mucky clothes can result. What price a good photo? A support such as a small bag of polystyrene chips can make an ideal support for the camera and keep it off the ground. The other essential is a small piece of white card, propped in front and below the lens, pointing towards the underside of the fungus. This will reflect light into the shadowed underside. The scenes were shot on Cranborne Chase and the fungi in the New Forest. Roger Allen www.rogerallenphotos.com

Woofability is a local charity which trains assistance dogs for disabled people in Dorset, Hampshire and south Wiltshire. Their dogs help with many household tasks including emptying the washing machine, taking off socks and shoes, fetching the post and switching lights on and off, but most of all, they provide companionship and independence. Jenny Clarke, a long term wheelchair user and founder of Woofability says “when you go out on your own in a wheelchair, nobody talks to you, it is a very isolating experience, but when I go out with my assistance dog everybody wants to say hello, it’s wonderful and I now have so many friends that it takes hours to do my shopping! I want to give other disabled people the benefits I have had through an assistance dog, so we started Woofability last year and we plan to train 20 dogs a year. This month, our 20th trainee will arrive, they are all Golden Retrievers and each one has a lovely personality, it is a privilege to work with such intelligent animals. As a new charity, we are working hard to ensure that we can train a further 20 dogs next year and so we have lots of fundraising events; the organisation is run entirely by volunteers which means that our costs are kept to a minimum and all funds are directed towards training and upkeep of our dogs.
