What a Difference a Year Makes WIMBORNE’S Post Office has returned after nearly 14 months’ absence following the devastating fire last July. It took more than three months and a 2,654-signature petition to get a temporary branch up and running in the King Street car park. Now the redeveloped Martins convenience store, with Post Office desk inside, is open for business and Wimborne is truly open again after months of disruption. Mel Fry from Post Office Ltd thanked customers for their patience, and said improvements included a wheelchair ramp - the same staff will run the refurbished shop. Saville Travel and Thomas Cook should also be open for business in the new premises by the time you read this. Wimborne Chamber of Trade are determined Christmas should be a positive time for traders after the problems of the past and the Wimborne and District Directory also wants to help, so we are running a “What Are You Doing for Christmas” Feature in the November issue – your plans and ideas to make this Christmas successful! New Rotarian for Wimborne Stewart Waldridge has just become the fifth person to join the Wimborne Rotary Club this year and now there are 44 members including four ladies. He is a local man operating his business “Interiors Complete” in Mill Lane. Howard Smith, President of Wimborne Rotary said, “I am delighted to welcome on board another person who is working with the local community. He will be a great help when we are planting the 5000 purple crocuses on the 2nd Oct in the Waitrose parkland and also working with one of four committees.”

1st Wimborne Minster Scout Group Centenary On 18th September the Group held an Open Day on the Minster Green. Many past members were welcomed back including Eddie Wood from Melksham, who was a Scout in the 1940’s, when the late John Loader was Scoutmaster. With the permission of the Rector (Rev Canon John Holbrook), the Minster Green was transformed into a Scouting activity area that included a very popular climbing tower for young and old alike. A range of scout activities and events were on display - something for everyone to be enjoyed. The celebrations transferred to the Group Headquarters in Redcotts Lane, where an exhibition of photos and memorabilia was on display and refreshments were served. The final event was the unveiling of the refurbished gates by the Mayor of Wimborne (Cllr Terry Wheeler) and Mr David Gerry, who had done the restoration. These gates were originally erected in 1948 at the old HQ on Leigh Common, and had been found in the loft at HQ. The Group would like to thank the Rev John Holbrook, The Mayor and Mayoress of Wimborne, (Cllr & Mrs Terry Wheeler), Mr Anthony Oliver MBE and his wife Christine, Cllrs Robin and Sue Cook, Cllr John Burden and his wife Ann, the traders who donated raffle prizes, members of the East Dorset Scout Activity Support Unit, the Wimborne Explorer Unit, and the general public for supporting the day. The next Group activity will be assisting the members of the Rotary Club of Wimborne to plant 5000 purple crocus bulbs in the grounds of the new Waitrose Store, on Saturday 2nd October. WIMBORNE IN BLOOM PRIZEGIVING The Prizegiving took place on 18th September at Allenbourn Middle School. For the second year in succession the Prizegiving was split into two events, the first for all the Schools involved with the Junior Sections of the Art and Poetry Competitions and secondly for the Adults, again in the Art and Poetry Competitions and also the Main Wimborne in Bloom Competition. Both events were well supported. The Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr. Terry and Mrs. Pauline Wheeler presented the prizes. Local Nurseries and Garden Centres around the area provided garden vouchers to be spent at their centres for the Main Competition with Infinergy Ltd, a Wimborne based wind Farm Company sponsoring the Under 16’s Art Competition and Mrs Pam Perry continuing to sponsor the Adult Poetry Competition which her late husband Cllr John Perry sponsored when he was Town Mayor. All prizewinners received a Certificate, these kindly produced and donated by Moose International, Wimborne Town Lodge with special thanks to Michael Randall for preparing them all. The main competition winners also received the Trophies in the 17 different categories. The Sam and Joe’s Challenge Bowl, in recognition of all the support given through the engraving of the Trophies was awarded to Ken Short. Certificates of Excellence awarded by South and South East in Bloom were also presented to Geoff and Jill Haywood, Cllr John Burden, Ann Sheldrake, Peter Glancy, Ken Short and the Wimborne Tourist Information Centre. A raffle at the two events raised £153 for ‘In Bloom’ funds.

BioBlitz finds hundreds of wildlife species Hundreds of wildlife species were recorded at the recent Corfe Mullen BioBlitz. The event, organised by Corfe Mullen Nature Watch and Dorset Wildlife Trust, brought local residents, families and some of the county’s top experts together to find as much wildlife as they could over 12 hours. Full results are still coming in, but Jane Adams, Coordinator of Corfe Mullen Nature Watch, said: “We expect the total of different species to be over 500, which is far more than we had hoped for. That included 180 lichens alone! Many of these sites, including private Photo: Nicky Hoar DWT gardens, public footpaths and churchyards, had not been fully investigated before, so it is very exciting.” Opened by wildlife film maker Hugh Miles, the day included guided walks, wildlife hunts, moth traps and bat detecting as well as people recording wildlife in their own gardens. The event which was funded by the East Dorset Community Partnership, was featured on Radio 4’s Saving Species programme, available at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tmlh0. Wildlife highlights of the day include hobby, nightjar, spotted flycatcher and yellow wagtail, with rare reptiles including smooth snake and sand lizard. One expert alone found over 100 different plant species at St Hubert’s Church field, while other finds included 150 different lichens, brown argus butterfly and the scarce marsh gentian. It was a wonderful opportunity to find out about the huge variety of wildlife living side by side with people and the data coming from this event will help in the task of protecting the wildlife and habitats of Dorset. Struggling cat charity warns of closing Cats Protection’s Bournemouth & District Branch says it could be forced to close its doors as it struggles to cope with an unprecedented number of unwanted cats in need of the charity’s help. The branch – run by volunteers who look after cats at their own homes – is stretched to the limit looking after 60 cats and kittens – with another 120 on a rapidlygrowing waiting list. If people do not adopt these cats and the waiting list grows further then the branch says they would have no choice but to temporarily close its doors. Frank Mitchell said: “The branch is always very busy but this month is particularly bad – our pens are full up with unwanted cats and we are overwhelmed with requests to take in many more. We have also noticed a decline in the number of people wishing to adopt a cat.

The best and brightest late summer perennials are in the Asteraceae family: asters naturally, and helenium, helianthus, rudbeckia and Echinacea – all giving dazzling colour to the borders, blues and oranges, opposites on the colour wheel so complementing each other. There are also some autumn flowering bulbs – autumn crocus of course, shocking-pink nerines, and the naked stems and pale pink bells of amaryllis belladonna. Then there’s good old phlox and drifts of cyclamen hederifolium in flower from August, and schizostylis and crocosmias in wonderful colours. I have a new schizostylis called ‘Pink Princess’, white with just a wash of pink. Crocosmia ‘Star of the East’ is a beautiful variety with large orange flowers. I know some people are against crocosmias because of the invasive nature of montbretia, but the very desirable cultivars, like ‘Star of the East’ and ‘Emily McKenzie’ bulk up far too slowly for me! Dahlias and Cannas will go on until the frosts too, but then have to be taken up and stored, or mulched over if you’re brave. I find they do survive if I leave them in the ground, but are so very slow to appear next year. Barbara Gooch

Banana Fritters ala Yayu Ingredients: 1-2 Firm bananas 200ml Vegetable Oil ½ cup of plain flour ¼ cup or less of cold water One pinch of salt 3 drops of Vanilla essence

Method: Peel the banana and cut into two diagonally then slice in the middle along its length up to ¾ of its length. Mix the flour with a pinch of salt, vanilla essence and cold water till a smooth mixture. Heat the oil in the wok in the medium heat. Dip the cut banana into batter. Then fry until golden brown. HELP SUPPORT BREAST CANCER CARE WITH Curves members in Wimborne are being encouraged to support Breast Cancer Care during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October by donating their old and unwanted bras as well as holding Pink Fridays events to raise vital funds for the charity. Curves Wimborne has installed a bra bank for both members and non-members to donate any un-wanted bras. £1 will be donated to Breast Cancer Care for every kilo collected. Breast Cancer Care is encouraging people nationwide to celebrate the most relaxed day of the working week throughout October by taking part in the charity’s Pink Fridays fundraising campaign. Jurassic Jaunts - The Portland Round 36

An excellent 7.5 mile walk which takes in Portland Bill, the quarries, Verne Prison and give a variety of great views, including views over Weymouth Bay, Portland Harbour and a fantastic view along the Jurassic Coast to St Alban’s/St Aldhelm’s Head. No ascents or descents of any significance. How to get there: - Grid Reference; SY 680700. Go through Weymouth towards Portland, up through the bends onto Portland and at the first roundabout follow the signs for The Portland Spa and Southwell Business Park. After about 2½ miles, as you enter the Southwell Business Park, park near the entrance as this is where the walk starts and ends. Walk details:- There are various paths that cut back across Portland from the main path so this walk has great flexibility. Leave the car park entrance and just after the lay-by on the right you will see a Footpath sign and follow this path along the side of the fence, onto the Coastal Path. At the end, turn left and head down to Portland Bill and Lighthouse, passing by one of the 2 old lighthouses and the Portland Bill Coastguard station. At the bill, left of the lighthouse, follow the stone marker indicator leading you towards Church Ope Cove. Follow the coastal path indicators through the old quarries which take you onto the road at one stage for 1/3 mile, to Church Ope Cove. Whilst on the road, you can walk on the grass verge on the right, past the Chain Weares car park and then follow the finger pointer on the right off the road section. After ascending from Church Ope Cove, the path becomes a flat track but soon after, be careful to follow the yellow indicator on the stone which leads you left, up beside a small quarry rather than following the track. At the top, bear 90 degrees right, on the level, not back down the small track and stay on the level to Grove Point and Verne prison. Here, with great views across Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, you again meet the road and follow this around the prison. As you leave the entrance, follow the wooden indicators through the boulders and follow these signs (and no others) along the large flat track, past fenced off buildings to your right until you meet the tarmac road again. Stay on the road, past the High Angle Batteries, straight across at the junction until you meet car parks on your right. Follow the path to the right of the car park until you see the next Coastal Path sign. Follow the road to your right, passing the Cenotaph and other memorials on your right. Just in front of the Portland Heights Hotel, you will come to a sharp left hand bend, just before a roundabout. Follow the yellow arrow indicator to the right, down across the road and you are now on the west side of Portland. Follow the path along the west cliff until you see the Southwell Business Park on your left and Portland Bill straight ahead. Do not be tempted to go to the east of the Business Park but stay on the coast path, retrace your steps back along the south side of the fence and back into the car park. Photographing people

Most people with cameras photograph other people, usually friends and family. This may be at social gatherings such as parties, weddings and christenings. There are three main challenges: light direction, posing and backgrounds. Light direction Sunny conditions create strong shadows. This means that with side lighting part of the face is very bright while the other side is in deep shadow. This can cause over exposure of the bright side and is not flattering as the texture, wrinkles and laughter lines are emphasized. If you get people to face into the light the result is flat lighting, which fixes the side lighting problems, but can result in squinting eyes and screwed up faces. The couple in the two comparison photos asked me to photograph them at a party in their garden. They placed themselves side on to the bright sun. Having taken this reference shot I then asked them to move round so the sun was behind them. The back lighting is much more effective, highlighting the hair, creating smoother textures and separating the background which is also less fussy. Background We have all seen images where there is a pole or tree sticking out of someone’s head or an unsightly object or inappropriately placed person visible. ‘Oh I didn’t see that when I took the photo’ is oft heard. Looking at the entire frame not just the subject, taking a little more time and moving your viewpoint usually helps. The character in black and white shows how moving away from the subject and using a long lens zoom setting can throw the background out of focus. Posing This is more of a challenge and some feel uncomfortable about doing this. There is a lot involved, including experience, in confidently posing people. Here is one idea. Men like to but their hands in their pockets. Just ask them to take out the thumb only. This can make a big difference as illustrated in the wedding photo.
