The Challenge

For this project we were required to create a multi-page magazine spread on a topic of our own choice using our own photography. We were given a few weeks to complete the project in Adobe InDesign.

The Big Idea

I wished to incorporate my car, whose name is Melon, into this project, so I created an automotive magazine called Melon Not Lemon Magazine.

The Road to Success

Luckily the inspiration for this project came easy, as I had previously made myself familiar with the designs of Car and Driver and MotorTrend Magazine. I spent several days going out and taking pictures of my car as well as a dealership for my magazine.

Issues on the Way

The biggest issue that I faced was procrastination. The other main issue I faced was editing my photos, mainly my cover photo to take an image of a parked car and make it appear as though it was in motion.

The End Result

Overall, the end result of this project is a well thought out automotive magazine. I’m very proud of the work that I created and I view this as one of the best projects that I have created.

The Challenge

For this project, we were instructed to create a deck of 52 cards, each card focusing on a different font. The cards had to utilize the alphabet and needed to maintain a consistent design throughout. We were also instructed to print out and trim each card.

The Big Idea

I wanted to include and emphasize some of the “uglier” fonts with my card deck. I also wanted each letter to match with a font that started with the same letter.

The Road to Success

The road to my final design involved having to go through several design iterations before I finalized what my deck of cards would look like. Once I designed the right layout, it was relatively simple to adjust each card for each font. The font finding process was fun, as I was able to discover several fonts that I still use to this day.

Issues on the Way

There were several issues that I faced while creating this project. One of the larger issues I faced was getting a good layout and making sure each different font would fit in the layout. Other issues included finding the right fonts and creating the patterns on the backs of the cards.

The End Result

The 52 font cards that I created do a great job at displaying a wide array of fonts as well as displaying their unique characters. Having to print each card out as well as trim them was a welcome change from the primarily digital work of previous projects that I worked on.

The Challenge

With this project we were required to take five images: one showing a well lit subject, one showing a silhouette, and three capturing some type of motion. We also had to shoot each of these manually.

The Big Idea

Once I was assigned this project, I immediately knew I wanted to photograph cars driving by at night for a long exposure shot. The rest of my pictures came to me during the process of going out and taking photos.

The Road to Success

Heavily inspired by long exposures of highways at night that I’d seen previously, I almost immediately went to my nearest road and highway and started taking photos. My other photos weren’t as planned out, especially my well-lit portrait (top right), which I took on the very last day to work on this project.

Issues on the Way

The main issue I had with this project was overcoming my insecurity over taking photos for projects in public. Some of the other issues I faced for this project were coming up with ideas for pictures, equipment constraints, and time constraints.

The End Result

I am very happy with how this project has turned out. I’ve always loved photography and I made sure I took this project as an opportunity to improve my photography skills.

The Challenge

For this project, we were required to design a logo for a provided company name, as well as choose what type of business Vocé21 would be. We were also required to incorporate a tagline into the logo. For my portfolio, I decided to redo this project and redesign the logo.

The Big Idea

I chose the brand name Vocé21 and chose to create it as a premium clothing and accessories brand. For my redesign of this logo, I went back to the original sketches I drew when I was assigned this project and digitized one of my previous logo sketches.

The Road to Success

I was able to design this final new Vocé21 logo with little issue, as when I worked on this project originally this design was my favorite from my sketches. I played around with a few different layouts for this logo before finalizing it with the symbol on top and the name and tagline below it.

Issues on the Way

The biggest issue that I faced with this project was deciding to completely redesign this logo. I originally planned on digitizing the previous version of my Vocé21 logo, but through the process of doing so I ended up not liking the logo, which inspired me to redesign it.

The End Result

I’m extremely pleased with how my logo redesign turned out. The logo feels high class and I can easily imagine this logo attaching itself to a premium fashion and fashion accessories brand.

The Challenge

I created this project for my Spring 2023 Photography class. For this project we were instructed to take a series of five images using the rule of thirds. The main constraint with this project was that each image had to be taken manually.

The Big Idea

I struggled a bit with what I wanted to do for this project at first. Enticed by extra points for having a theme, I ended up basing my photos around my hometown of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. I wanted to highlight places in Pawtucket that have had a significance in my life.

The Road to Success

Taking this set of photos was another opportunity for me to get more used to taking pictures in public. I found it rather fun to go around and explore my hometown more than I had in the past.

Issues on the Way

I did not face any major issues with this project. There were some minor issues, such as me not knowing of the diopter adjuster and instead believing that my camera’s viewfinder was damaged.

The End Result

I’m very pleased with how all of my images turned out in the end. I used the rule of thirds in unique and interesting ways and several of my images tell a story of Pawtucket. This has become one of my favorite photography projects and I look forward to creating more.

The Challenge

For this project, we were instructed to design an 11x17 poster for an event of our choosing. We were required to lay our poster out in Adobe InDesign. For my portfolio I changed and expanded my poster.

The Big Idea

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to design a concert poster, as I thought it would be a fun way to incorporate my musical tastes into this project. I also decided that I wanted to have this fictional concert take place in Providence.

The Road to Success

Originally, I had planned on using the name of an artist I listened to for my poster. However, I thought it would be entertaining to use the placeholder text “band” as the name for an artist. The idea for the street map background came from my feeling that my poster needed texture. For my expansion, I chose made two more posters in different cities as part of a fictional tour for “A Girl Called Band”, as well as make small refinements to the layout.

Issues

on the Way

I faced my main issue when it came to tracing my street maps. While not necessarily difficult, it was more time consuming to use the Pen Tool in Illustrator to trace over screenshots of Google Maps to get my street map backgrounds.

The End Result

I’m happy with how this series turned out. I love the street map background as it, along with the color palettes, makes each location poster look unique.

Can you tell I like music? Web | Spring 2023 Can you tell I like music?

The Challenge

For this project, we were required to create a blog on any topic we wanted using WordPress and the WordPress Twenty Twenty theme.

The Big Idea

I saw this project as the perfect opportunity to create a project fully focused around my taste in music. I focused my blog around discussions of all things music, whether it be album reviews or opinions.

The Road to Success

I was inspired mostly by Pitchfork, one of the web’s most popular music blogs. I wanted my blog to take on the approach of being run by multiple people, rather than just one person, which is reflected in the use of “we” instead of writing “I”.

Issues on the Way

One of the issues I faced was not realizing how long it would take me to finish several of my posts. One of my posts, my Hikaru Utada revisit, took 6-8 hours to complete. Other posts took similar amounts of time to complete.

The End Result

I ended this project by creating one of my favorite projects. I’m proud of how I was able to thoroughly incorporate my interest in music into a believable music blog. I may choose in the future to continue making posts on this blog as I enjoy writing about music.

Fonts are fun. Print | Spring 2022 Fonts are fun.

The Challenge

For this project, I was required to choose one serif and one sans serif font and create a poster based off of those two fonts. We were also required to research our chosen fonts and design the two posters in Adobe Illustrator.

The Big Idea

I knew immediately upon assignment of this project that I would choose Helvetica, as I liked how common of a font it was yet how rarely recognized it was. I then chose Didot, as I was inspired by its use by Vogue Magazine. I planned on creating an NYC Subway-like sign for Helvetica, and a magazine cover for Didot.

The Road to Success

I made sure to familiarize myself with the typical designs of the New York City Subway as well as various Vogue Magazine covers. I chose the lowercase letter g as the subject of my Didot poster, as it resembles someone with a ponytail.

Issues on the Way

The primary issue that I faced with this project was figuring out how to layout all the required text on my posters. We were required to include a brief history section, the full alphabet, special characters, as well as facts about the fonts among other things. I was able to overcome this issue, however, to create two beautiful posters.

The End Result

I’m very happy with how these two posters turned out. They do a great job of representing Didot and Helvetica and my posters are even featured in The Gravity of Typography, written by Karyn Jimenez-Elliot.
