The Challenge

For this project, we were instructed to design an 11x17 poster for an event of our choosing. We were required to lay our poster out in Adobe InDesign. For my portfolio I changed and expanded my poster.

The Big Idea

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to design a concert poster, as I thought it would be a fun way to incorporate my musical tastes into this project. I also decided that I wanted to have this fictional concert take place in Providence.

The Road to Success

Originally, I had planned on using the name of an artist I listened to for my poster. However, I thought it would be entertaining to use the placeholder text “band” as the name for an artist. The idea for the street map background came from my feeling that my poster needed texture. For my expansion, I chose made two more posters in different cities as part of a fictional tour for “A Girl Called Band”, as well as make small refinements to the layout.

Issues

I faced my main issue when it came to tracing my street maps. While not necessarily difficult, it was more time consuming to use the Pen Tool in Illustrator to trace over screenshots of Google Maps to get my street map backgrounds.

The End Result

I’m happy with how this series turned out. I love the street map background as it, along with the color palettes, makes each location poster look unique.
