WELCOME

The future’s now AWARD

Chevron celebrate ‘industry Oscar’ Chevron’s IT revolution is here. Project Midvale – the biggest technology investment we’ve ever made – is in the process of going live and is being rolled out across the company. This new software will change the way we all work and operate as a business to meet the growing needs of our customers and keep Chevron at the forefront of our industry. You can see a sneak preview of our new Chevron app on pages 4-6, along with key roll-out dates. These are exciting times and we all have a chance to get involved. Many of you have helped with designing the new system already, but please let us know if you have any questions, or would like further details.

Tim Cockayne Managing Director

Our awards cabinet is filling up again after we received one of the industry’s most prestigious awards. The team was presented with our first ‘industry Oscar’ for Skills Development at the CIHT Awards last month. This was in recognition of the diverse range of employment and training strategies we have to improve our staff’s core skills, reduce unemployment, and provide a long-term trained workforce for our business and the highways industry. Chevron also picked up a Workforce Diversity Award at the recent Rochdale Diversity Awards for our work with Rochdale Training in tackling high youth unemployment and developing a unique traineeship induction programme. A big thank you to our Business Development Manager, Lisa Killinger, for all her hard work in promoting Chevron’s work at these awards.

Champions in the making

Baby boom

Budding young boxers at the Kettering School of Boxing were delighted to receive some new equipment courtesy of Chevron recently. The School was founded in the late 1990s and Chance Dickens (Finedon) has been a volunteer coach since 2011. He said: “The club for me is home. It’s where I trained up until I had my family and started full-time at Chevron. “The kids compete at national championship events, club shows and take part in regional squad training. This donation will help support these future young champions in the making!”

We’re delighted to announce the arrival of three Chevron babies since the last issue. Congratulations to Morgan Thompson (Manchester) and his wife Kelly on the birth of their son Tate on 13 May, and to Matt West (General Manager, South) and his wife Amy, who also had a son, called Ralph on 8 June. Lastly, Joe Flynn (Manchester) became a grandfather to baby Flynn, who arrived on 23 June.

PEOPLE

Three Peaks team raise £6500 It was blood, sweat (nearly tears!) and plenty of aches and pains for the Chevron team, who took part in the Three Peaks Challenge recently.

Battling the course involved climbing three of Britain’s highest mountains, some of which in less than favourable weather (thank you Snowdon!), and travelling

over 480 miles in 24 hrs. It wasn’t easy, or without incident, but we can safely say that everyone put the effort in and pushed themselves to the max! Tim Cockayne, Lisa Killinger, Eddie McFarland, Mick Carr, Chris Adams, Justin Brookman, Nick Brookman, Liam Wilson, Chris Griffin, Michael Dyson and Joe Flynn of Chevron took part in the challenge to raise more then £6500 for The Rainbow Trust – a national charity that provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. A very big thank you to everyone who supported team Chevron.

INNOVATION

Project Midvale The price of doing the same old thing is far higher than the price of change. By Mark Fleckner, Director Nobody likes change - it’s scary and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, in business as in life we have to accept that for progress to be made we have to embrace the ‘new’. If we don’t learn to embrace change and move forward, we will be left behind. Richard Branson recently wrote: “Every success story is a tale of constant adaption, revision and change. A company that stands still will soon be forgotten. “Our Industry is changing and the way we operate has to adapt to meet the growing needs of our Customers and stay ahead of the pack. We still want to do things ‘The Chevron Way’, offer the same high standards of service and be easy and fun to do business with. That’s what sets us apart from the competition.

It’s our 20th anniversary as a business in February 2017 and to ensure we are still around for our 30th, 40th and 50th year, we have to accept and embrace the use of technology so that we’re smarter, leaner and faster than not only our competition, but also ahead of the wider industry. Whilst this will be difficult, it represents a significant opportunity for everyone at Chevron to be part of an industry leading organisation with a bright, progressive future. Many of you have contributed to the success of Phase One, which went live on 3 May, and included new systems for Finance, Purchasing and Human Resources. We now have all employee records within a single database and to date have raised nearly 1000 purchase orders online. Many thanks to everyone involved in the roll-out and anyone using the new systems. You all made it happen!

Phase two is coming…

In the last newsletter you may recall I described what the new world would look like when we schedule work (white boards), and send people to work (Job Packs). Since then we’ve made exciting progress and on 6 July our software partner, The Access Group, presented the whole solution to the Senior Management team. I thought I’d take this opportunity to give you all a sneak preview of the tablet app that will be used out on the road and the scheduler that will replace the whiteboards in the depots. Over the coming months some of you will be involved in testing all aspects of the software to ensure that we ‘go live’ glitch free.

Our Resource Planning software Our Resource Planning software is a simple drag and drop tool, which will enable you to simply allocate specific people and vehicles to jobs. This will allow depots, Regional General Managers and the Senior Management team to see what we’re doing at any time. It will record everything we’ve undertaken historically and provide a forward view in real-time of what we have planned in the future. Typical issues discussed will include changes to safe working practices, i.e. risk assessments and method statements, technical innovations, fleet improvements, PPE, customer feedback, recent accidents and incidents, audit and inspection results, and training. Staff will be able to raise any H&S concerns as well as make suggestions for improvements. These will then be followed up with the management team, who will feedback to employees at the following meeting.

OBSERVE AND REPORT

Safety videos

EVENTS

Area 9 H&S week

At the beginning of the year we challenged each depot to create their own safety videos. The brief was to make a short film with a home-made feel, a bit of humour, and a clear safety message relating to our day-to-day operations. The aim was to get everyone involved and have some fun, whilst raising safety awareness across the company. The result? Well you did not disappoint! We’ve had a fantastic response and some great efforts - in fact you have exceeded expectations. Little did we know that we had such talented cinematic producers in our midst and not to mention some very fetching outfits! Most of all you have managed

Chevron staff took part in an annual Health and Safety week as part of the Kier Strategic Highways Area 9 supply chain recently.

Paul Jubb aka Major Bright-Spark (Leeds)

to highlight the importance of safety when reversing and using a banksman, wearing a head torch and PPE, as well as how to climb on and off a vehicle in the correct way.

The event, held at Stafford Park, saw a cohort of Area 9 employees and supply chain representatives in attendance, as well as a local school children visit, to raise awareness of road safety. Depot Manager Karl Exall, Mark Rudd, Hugo Nixon and the team delivered regular presentations on the operation of our airlock gate procedure as part of the event.

DEPOT FOCUS: NEWPORT

Turning the tide Our Newport depot has come a long way from the old days and after a much needed refurbishment they now have a depot to be proud of, as Area Manager Darren Clarke explains. How times change. Back in 2009 the Newport depot consisted of two portacabins and a sign shed in a field, with no on-site running water! Add to that 40 plus men, three IPVs and 12 pick-ups, and things got kind of interesting. We needed a new site and fast! Thankfully, in March 2010 we acquired a plot of land on the sunny banks of the River Usk in Newport and came up in the world with a portacabin, running water and a toilet block too! Back then we were really busy on the Area 2 contract and things were going well. However after losing the contract, morale was low. We went down to 19 men, all of whom had to go and work away, mainly to the Manchester Depot. It was a stressful time for all. However, I’m pleased to say that we have worked through it and today morale is good - though it would be even better if we got Area 2 back. We currently supply more than 50 men to Area 3 and 9 on a daily basis. Added to that, we have three men coming up to 10 years’ service this year – Rob Williams, Paul Harley and Terry Green – all working happily alongside other long-standing members of staff, myself included, with over 20 years’ service.

From left to right: Chris Sowden, Jay Jay Whitehead, Joscef Szafnauer, Rhys Clarke and Terry Powell.

To top things off in 2015 we upgraded our facilities and we now have a lovely new cabin that can spaciously seat eight members of staff, along with new toilets and a foreman’s cabin. The old office cabin was renovated and is now a spacious canteen, which doubles up as a meeting room, making toolbox talks and meetings with the men much more comfortable and professional. I’m pleased to say that we now have a depot that we are very proud of.

Newport fact file: Location: The depot is in Newport and has easy access to the M4 Team: 50 permanent men, plus over 10 agency staff used on a regular basis E quipment: 8 x IPV’s and 20 x 3.5 tonne pick-ups

CLIENT INBOX

Doug Whitford,

Traffic Safety and Control Officer, Oxfordshire County Council Thanks for all your efforts on the recent resurfacing scheme at Botley. The men you sent out were a pleasure to work with – nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them and their help made a traffic sensitive scheme go smoothly. Sean O’Hanlon and his men are a credit to your organisation and their attitude was one of enthusiasm and attention to detail. They were punctual in getting the lane closures out on time, traffic flows permitting. I look forward to working with them again, as they made my job a lot easier.”
