Welcome

Message from Tim Cockayne

There is a lot happening across the Chevron Group at the moment as we continue to grow and develop all our businesses across the UK.

Perhaps some of the most significant projects that we have undertaken are the combining of the traffic management element of HBS with Class One under a single refreshed brand in Scotland. Also, Shift and Herts have integrated into Chevron TM which has allowed us to streamline our traffic management services and develop our new brand. Our rebrand is a really important project as it cements our relationship with Ramudden Global and allows us to create stronger connections with the other businesses that also make up this global network including Ramudden, Fero and AVS. Since July, Class One, Chevron TM and Chevron Green Services have all adopted the new brand which is now being rolled out across PPE, fleet, buildings and other assets.

As part of the rebrand project, we have introduced a new positioning statement which states that as part of Ramudden Global, we are “a caring force for a safer world.” This is not a new concept for the Chevron Group. Safety has always been our business and our employees have shown time and time again how compassionate we are towards our colleagues, customers and the general public.

Indeed, to capture and capitalise on the caring nature of all our businesses, we introduced our Social Value policies earlier this year. Our charitable donations and volunteering policies have really taken off with employees taking part in some fantastic fundraising and volunteering initiatives. Since we launched the new policies, we have financially supported 12 charities and contributed almost 400 volunteering hours to a range of charities and community groups.

Caring for our environment is another key focus for the Chevron Group. Jamie Bowen and his team continue to lead the way in delivering our ESG targets but we are also committed to reducing carbon emissions through innovation and technology.

HRS’ Intellitag® is a key product in moving our industry from routine maintenance to data-led, event-based maintenance. By installing Intellitag® on a seven-month scheme on the A1 at Biggleswade, we eliminated 107,800 vehicle miles for physical checks and saved 81.10 tonne of CO2 emissions. Imagine the carbon savings of Intellitag® if it was deployed on every scheme!

The potential game-changing effect of Intellitag® has already been recognised by Highways Awards who have shortlisted it for a Maintenance Efficiency Award. Winners will be announced on 11th October so hopefully we will have another award to add to our growing list that we have won so far this year.

Around this time last year, we introduced the EMCC technique to the industry and since then we are seeing the real benefits of EMCC. Traffic management operators and contractors are reporting a range of improvements that this technique has made to their carriageway operations, not least guaranteed start times and longer working windows. On one scheme, resurfacing works on the M6, the first cone went on 100 minutes earlier than anticipated with an estimated saving of up to 50 hours over 38 shifts. The feedback has been exceptionally positive and requests to roll out EMCC on schemes across the country continue to grow.

We have also secured four prestigious accolades for EMCC including National Highways Transforming our Industry through Innovation Award and the Chairman’s Award which is a fantastic achievement.

As always, none of these achievements or successes would be possible without the continued loyalty and dedication of our employees who I will always pay tribute to. We are an exceptional team who really are a caring force for a safer world.

Doing Digital

Innovation, technology and digital services are driving traffic management into the future and HRS continues to lead the way in digital traffic management across the UK and further afield by collaborating with industry stakeholders and finding innovative solutions for ongoing traffic management challenges.

Download the App

Have you downloaded the HRS App? This is a fantastic resource which is home to videos, training guides and technical specs on HRS’s full range of digital products.

It tells you everything you need to know about enhancing traffic management schemes with digital technology.

The app is free to download on Android or iOS. Simply scan the QR code below.

Site Safe & Clear

A collaboration between HRS and Costain has delivered a new safety solution which enhances the awardwinning Intellicone® incursion warning system and further reduces risk to road workers.

Site Safe & Clear is a new feature which has been added to the existing HRS Intellicone® Incursion Prevention & Warning System to provide a clear process that makes opening a road closure safer and more efficient, helps prevent miscommunication and logs removal times. As a new feature to the existing IIPAWS®, it does not require any additional equipment to be used.

Roger Poeth, HRS International Business Development Director added: “This is a great example of innovation through collaboration. We are committed to developing digital products and services that are industryled and will improve safety, provide operational efficiencies and give contractors and TM providers essential data to help them make informed decisions. We thank Tony Carr, Costain A12 Senior TM Manager for working with us on the development of Site Safe & Clear which now makes our existing IIPAWS ® even more valuable to roadworkers.”

Intellitag®

Over the next few weeks, you will see Intellitag® featuring strongly on social media as we have just launched a marketing campaign to promote this product. For anyone unfamiliar with Intellitag®, this is a simple device that attaches to any road sign and makes it digital. It sends alerts if a sign falls down or is moved which means maintenance crews only have to check on works when there is an issue, rather than doing regular maintenance checks.

Using Intellitag®, we can make works safer, more efficient, more environmentally friendly. To find out more about Intellitag®, visit the HRS website.

A Caring Force for a Safer World

Over the past few months, you will have noticed that we have begun a major rebrand project and you will have seen changes to many of our businesses as follows:

l Class One TM and the traffic management division of HBS have merged and operate as Class One TM with a new brand identity.

Our Brand Story

The Chevron Group is the UK’s leading infrastructure safety expert and part of Ramudden Global, a network of market leading businesses across Europe and North America that share a similar vision and mission “to get people home safely every day.” No matter where or what the job is, our employees, our customers’ employees and the general public deserve to work, travel and move through their world safely. We believe this is what matters most.

We are the unseen workforce who, without compromise, is committed to the safety of the infrastructure that the world takes for granted.

Behind every road works, construction site, or industrial work zone, we are the experts working together to keep people and workers safe. From small projects like closing a path or cutting back a tree, to the larger schemes on high-speed motorways, we provide the expertise, the experience, the knowledge and the dedication to ensure that anyone involved in or impacted by the works will be kept safe.

We collaborate to share best practices; we innovate to find safe and workable solutions and we dedicate our working lives to making the world that bit safer.

Quite simply, we are a caring force for a safer world.

l Shift Traffic Events and Herts Traffic Management have been integrated into Chevron TM and now operate under the new look CTM brand.

l The Chevron Group logo has been updated to bring it in line with the other businesses.

l Chevron Green Services has been rebranded in line with the new visual identity that’s been adopted across the rest of the company.

Our New Look

The aim of our rebrand project has been to create a stronger connection with our parent company, Ramudden Global, and the other business that also make up this global network including Ramudden, Fero and AVS.

Anyone who is familiar with Ramudden, Sweden may recognise our new brand which is an evolution of their brand identity. We have adopted their three triangles, their typography and their colour palette to give us a fresh new look which we are now rolling out across our businesses. Ramudden Global has also adopted the triangles although it has chosen a separate colour scheme to differentiate it from the individual businesses.

In the coming months, Fero and AVS will also adopt the new brand which will see them using the three triangles, typeface and colour palette making us identifiable as a part of a single group and therefore stronger together.

The rollout of the rebrand has already begun and over the coming months we will be rebranding all our assets including fleet and building signage.

This rebrand is extremely important for our business. It will help consolidate our services, provide clarity for our customers and position us as a successful, professional and forward-looking business with a strong global network.

Award Winning

Our mission is to get people home safely every day. We are the unseen workforce who go to work every day to ensure that road workers and road users are kept safe while works are underway.

We don’t go to work for recognition or pats on the back. We go to work to get the job done.

Having said that, we are always delighted when our efforts are recognised by our customers, peers and the wider industry. And so far, this year, we have been recognised multiple times.

National Highways Awards

At the National Highways Awards, earlier this year, Chevron TM and HRS were delighted to receive the Transforming Our Industry Through Innovation award for the development and introduction of the Enhanced Mobile Carriageway Closure technique. The award was a reflection of how we collaborated with the industry, including Costain Group, to find digital solutions for mobile carriageway closures.

The awards didn’t end there. We were then presented with the Chairman’s Award, the highest possible accolade at the Awards. This was selected from all 15 winners of the individual award categories.

On announcing the winner of the Chairman’s Award, National Highways Chairman, Dipesh Shah said: “The 2022 winner of the Chairman’s Award is proof that innovative technologies can truly change the landscape in which we work.

They have put the customer at the forefront and devised an impressive new way of installing, maintaining, switching or removing traffic management, benefitting both road workers and customers and delivering positive environmental outcomes. We now have something that can be used on all highways, not just the SRN.”

This is fantastic recognition that we should all be very proud of.

CIHT Awards

The winning didn’t stop at the National Highways Awards. Shortly after those awards, we attended the CIHT awards in London, where we continued to receive industry recognition for the EMCC technique. This time round, we received a commendation for the Collaboration Award and were highly commended for the Road Safety Award, again for the EMCC technique.

EMCC has been described as a game-changer by many in the industry. The feedback has been exceptionally positive, both from an operational and safety perspective and requests to roll out EMCC on schemes across the country continue to grow.

We are delighted to be recognised at such high levels for the development of the EMCC. However, the real satisfaction is creating a new way of working that improves safety and delivers significant operational efficiencies for our industry and our customers. This is what EMCC delivers and why it’s making a real difference to traffic management services.

Stronger Together

The rebrand of Chevron TM, Class One and Chevron Green Services has given us a shared identity which strengthens our group partnerships and allows us to work together where possible to deliver a onestop service for our clients. Here we have two fantastic examples of collaborative working across our businesses.

Cycling Mad

The UCI Cycling World Championships took place in Scotland recently. Billed as the biggest cycling event in the world...ever! It attracted over 8,000 elite and amateur cyclists from 120 countries, an estimated 1 million spectators across Scotland and a worldwide TV audience of more than 1 billion!

Class One TM and Chevron TM were commissioned to install road closures and diversions for the Medio Fundo and Gran Fundo. The Gran Fundo is a phenomenal 160km course through some of Scotland’s most beautiful landscape, so it was quite the TM challenge. Over 40 operatives, sector leaders and control room managers from Class One in Scotland as well as Retford, Scunthorpe, Warrington and Newcastle depots joined forces to successfully deliver this global event.

Class One also provided traffic management services for a number of additional events during the championship.

A fantastic job all round!

Henley Royal Regatta

This year, Henley Royal Regatta was a collaboration between Chevron Green Services and Chevron Traffic Management. The project saw CTM installing the main diversion points and signage throughout Henley, with CGS supplying the marshalling and HRS supplying Intellicone® and Intellicam® equipment.

Terry Pope who has supervised the operation for many years and has a very good relationship with the police and local council, was our point man on the ground, keeping all parties in the loop during the event.

As part of the traffic management provision, the teams trialled HRS Intellicone® IIPAWS, PSAs and Intellicam® cameras to protect the marshals from confrontation from members of the public. These proved to be very successful. The feedback from the marshals on the ground was that the Intellicone® system worked really well. They felt that not only was there a difference in people’s attitude towards them but that the crowds were easier to control.

Additionally, the police praised the Intellicone® system and expressed their thanks for the efficiencies that we brought to the event this year.

Dean Matthews, Contracts Manager, CGS is already looking forward to next year’s event with plans to use HRS technology again. “We will be using these kits again as both trials were a huge success, resulting in a much happier CGS team during the Henley Regatta this year.”

Things They Say…

Championing our customers is at the heart of what we do. We work every day to deliver for our customers, so it is always a pleasure when they take time to tell us what they think. Here is some of the feedback we’ve received over the past few months…

High Praise

“My fence needed to be replaced but I was really worried about how much it would unsettle my horses. However, I cannot praise your guys enough. I was kept up to date throughout, giving me plenty of warning before the work began so I had time to put up temporary electric fencing and keeping me updated as the work progressed.

Your guys were quick, efficient, tidy and respectful of my property and the horses, who were totally unaffected by the work around them. I simply cannot praise them enough and hope you will be able to pass on my appreciation.”

Landowner on M2

Depot Pride

“Depot pride is important to me. When we had a quiet 5 minutes my yard operative Charles Dashwood decided not to hide away but rather to tidy up the entrance to our industrial estate. It’s the little things that sometimes don’t get noticed but I am grateful to have such a great team at our Ringwood depot.”

Patrick Reynolds, Operations Manager, Ringwood Depot

Best I’ve seen!

“I wanted to email to let you know that I would have Tomasz Zurek running my jobs every night. The TM layout was the best I’ve ever seen, the site was clean and tidy and his communication was great. He waited onsite to make sure we were all happy with the closure he installed. The engineers from Telent Technology Services were very happy with the information Tom gave and with the ongoing communication.”

Zak Pritchard, Ringway Infrastructure Services

Huge

Difference

We recently provided traffic management at Headlingley for Yorkshire County Cricket Club and were delighted to get the following feedback.

“A big thank you to you and your team last night. The lads onsite were really helpful and the one-way system and road closure made a huge difference to the safety of our event.”

High Standard

“Just wanted to say thanks for sorting the northbound closure on the M5 last night at short notice. Chevron TM worked well and there were no issues. The TM crews installed in good time and presented Chevron to a high standard.”

Adrian Cox, Ringway Infrastructure Services

Out and About

Meet Paul Wilson, Managing Director, Chevron Green Services

New Home

We want to wish the team at Northampton (formerly Finedon) every success in their new premises. Over the past number of years, we outgrew the depot at Finedon so in June, the team moved into a new depot which is a bigger facility, in a more central location. This allows us to expand the services we previously offered out of Finedon. By moving to our new location, we can continue to deliver high and low-speed traffic management services to our customers in the North.

10 Years and Counting…

Welcome to CGS, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’ve worked in Engineering for over 30 years, working in a range of sectors and extensively in highways. I started my working life taking an apprenticeship to qualify as an electrician.

What attracted you to CGS?

I’ve known and worked with the Chevron Group a really long time, historically working in partnership with them on National Highways contracts. I’ve always known Chevron to have a fundamental commitment to safety and to be ambitious and innovative.

What’s it like working at CGS?

The people are really great. They are knowledgeable, experienced, and happy to take time to help new employees settle into the company.

There is also a real willingness to get the job done.

Chevron Green Services has a great safety culture and safety record and a clear commitment to service excellence. Maintaining those standards are paramount. But it is also important to be entrepreneurial and commercially focused. We are an organisation that maintains critical infrastructure and protects the environment. I think people should be proud to work for a company like that and want them to contribute to its success.

What are your ambitions for Chevron Green Services?

I want us to be the Number One business in our sector in the UK. I want us to grow, I want to diversify the sectors in which we operate and I want us to demonstrably contribute to government net zero targets.

Congratulations to Daryl Gordon, Andrew Gardner, Dave Flaherty, Ashley Jaggers, Daniel Maher and Chris Oram who have all marked 10 years at Consilium Technical Services. Daryl is pictured presenting the awards.

Helping Hands

Our new brand story, which is outlined on pages 4 and 5, positions the Chevron Group of businesses as “a caring force for a safer world.” While this is a new strapline, it is not a new concept. For years, the Chevron Group and the people who work here have been a caring force for numerous local communities, charities and projects.

This year, under the guidance of our Social Value Manager, Maria King-Smith, we introduced a number of initiatives and policies, designed to help as many charities and communities as possible and to support our employees who want to help out in their local communities.

Nominated Charities

We chose four national charities which as a group of businesses, we will support throughout the year. These include:

Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI)

We have a long-standing partnership with RBLI and were delighted to donate £5,000 to their Great Tommy Sleep Out in May. We will also be supporting their Tommy Tea fundraiser in November.

British Heart Foundation

This charity has worked very closely with us, providing training, information and support. We have recently donated £2,500 to BHF.

Rainbow Trust

We have set aside funding to support a family who has a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness. We are planning a Great Bake Off in September to raise additional funds to allow us to support a second family.

The Trussel Trust

We plan to continue our annual support for the Trussel Trust by supporting their Christmas Foodbank appeal throughout our depots but we also plan to make a substantial donation to allow this charity to extend the help they can offer to families across the UK.

Volunteering

Sometimes charities need additional manpower to help them carry out physical work such as painting or clearing spaces or to help out a fund-raising event which they have organised. We have a fantastic team of willing and able employees who can do so much to support these charities. Our Volunteering Policy was introduced to support employees who want to volunteer at local charities. This gives employees up to two days paid leave per year to do volunteer work which can be taken in whole day blocks or as partial days spread over a longer period.

Bear with me... I’m fundraising

Since the policy was introduced, we have seen some fantastic volunteering activity including Craig Beazley from the People Team who became a Bear Ranger for the day on behalf of Leeds Children’s Hospital and our Social Value Champions who visited Bradbury House Care Home to do a spot of gardening and painting! Unfortunately, the care home doesn’t have a gardener, so the guys were happy to get stuck in and ready the garden for the residents to enjoy. We donated and erected a new garden shed for the residents to enjoy back in December 2022, and the team touched it up with some paint to keep it looking fresh.

Charitable Donations

Many of our fantastic employees raise much-needed funds for charities or community initiatives which are close to your hearts. As part of our Social Value activity, we have introduced the Charitable Donations policy which will match any group fundraising for an eligible charity up to £250 in any financial year. Many employees have already availed of this support for a range of charities including Room at the Inn, Salvation Army, British Transplant Games and many more local schools, hospices and community groups.

Social Value Champions

We have a team of amazing Social Value Champions from around the group who come together to look at how we can best implement our social value plan to ensure that we are helping our local communities in the best way we can. Our teams of champions, led by Maria KingSmith are:

Shirley Young

Leah Clein

Chantal Derrick

Martin Johnson

Suzy Woodford

Ann Marie Butler

Phil Bowditch
