Welcome Message from Tim Cockayne

On 26 February 2022, a car accident claimed the life of a traffic management operative who was on duty on the M6. The operative was Kevin Jarvis, an employee of Golden Orb who was tragically killed as he worked on behalf of our Area 9 TM Team. Kevin worked with Chevron TM for many years. His death has devastated us, Golden Orb and the wider traffic management community. Collectively, our ultimate goal is to ensure that road workers go home safe after every shift. To know that, because of a dangerous driver, Kevin didn’t go home to his wife Julie, his children and his grandchildren is heartbreaking. It has shaken us to the core, particularly in Stafford where Kevin was a big part of the depot. His loss has hit the team hard and they are still coming to terms with what has happened. Kevin’s funeral took place on Friday 25 March. It was an emotional but beautiful tribute to a lovely man who was a colleague and friend to so many of us. Our thoughts remain with Kevin, his wife Julie, his family and his colleagues. One of our core values is ‘safety is our business’. Our commitment to Kevin’s legacy is that we will continue to make safety our business and protect road workers and road users. We will continue to work with the wider traffic management industry to raise standards, drive innovation and make work sites as safe as possible. As a group, all our businesses – Chevron TM, Class One TM, HRS and Chevron Green Services – work to the same goal. Shift Traffic Events and HBS joined us at the end of 2021 and we have been working closely with them as we bring them into the Chevron Group.

“Our commitment to Kevin’s legacy is that we will continue to make safety our business and protect road workers and road users.” The recruitment team is making steady progress but they need your help. We ask you to use your contacts and networks within the traffic management industry to encourage new talent to the Chevron Group. Don’t forget our Refer a Friend scheme that will pay you £750 for every new qualified operative you bring to us. Digital technology will continue to play a key role in improving safety across the industry. HRS has and continues to develop a range of products and solutions to improve work zone safety. Intellicone® Smart Taper, IIPAWS, Intelliframe® and Intellicam® add an additional layer of protection around sites. As a business, we need to strengthen our engagement with these digital products and lead the industry in making digital technology standard practice in traffic management. We all need to play our part.

Many of our new contracts, including Severn Trent Water are up and running and we have received positive feedback from the client as we build that partnership.

The past few weeks have been tough but what I have seen through the shock and the pain of Kevin’s death is a unity in the Chevron Group which is where our strength lies. We look out for each other, we support each other, we go the extra mile for each other. It is sometimes a bit of a cliché but we are a family and I am proud to lead it.

Recruitment remains a key focus as we grow our teams to deliver on our new and existing contracts.

Tim Cockayne CEO

3 | Newsletter Spring 2022 Lost property

Most of us know the sinking feeling of losing our mobile phone and the frantic hope that we’ll find it. Jamie Hurst from Chevron Green Services in Essex found a mobile phone on a grass verge and, with a bit of slick detective work, managed to reunite the phone with its owner who was so grateful, they wrote to us to say thank you.

COVID hero

Recently, a lady arrived at our Winchester depot on a bicycle, which, given that all the roads around the depot are dual carriageways, immediately raised concern. The lady was lost, confused and visibly distressed. She was trying to get to her local vaccination centre, which was located in the nearby park and ride, to get her COVID-19 jab.

Jamie Hurst

Levi McLean stepped in, calmed the lady down, reassured her and transported her and her bike to the vaccination centre. Levi waited in the park for her to return and then dropped her back to a familiar location from where she was able to make her way home safely.

“A massive thank you to Jamie and the team who were working on the A120 in Braintree this week. Our mobile phone was stolen last week and the guys from Chevron Green Services found it on the verge a couple of days later. They had the decency to take the time to look for the last caller on the phone to get in touch and let us know it had been found. The phone was old and already cracked but was valuable to us as it had family photos and contacts on it. We can’t thank them enough for taking the time to make sure we got our phone back.” Levi McLean Nice work Jamie.

A very simple act of kindness that not only helped the lady in distress but ensured she was safe. Safety is our business in more ways than one.

A credit to your company

Just purrfect

This is a copy of a letter that was sent to Chevron TM. Dear Mr Cockayne,

I understand you are the CEO of Chevron Traffic Management and I am writing to thank you on behalf of my son who was involved in a car accident on the A40 near Ross-on-Wye last night.

Ashley Lanes

Two of your employees stopped to assist at the scene and behaved in an absolutely exemplary manner and I think it’s important you are made aware of this. They contacted the police, used their vehicle to make other road users aware, and one of them marshalled traffic on the busy dual carriage whilst the other ensured our son and the other driver were safe. They were so polite and helpful. They stayed until the police arrived and took over the scene. Both drivers in the accident were unhurt, but the cars were very extensively damaged.

Steven Edwards

The two guys were an absolute credit to your company. Many thanks again from two very grateful parents and our son. The two guys were Ashley Lanes and Steven Edwards from Newport depot and they absolutely are a credit to our company. Great job Ashley and Steven!

We love this story. Luke Allaway, Dan Allaway and Ryan Denham, from West Drayton depot were working on the A1M in December and found a cat that sadly had been killed. The guys took it upon themselves to check social media to see if anyone in the area had posted about a missing cat. They traced the cat’s owners and while the outcome wasn’t what they were hoping for, they were happy to get their beloved pet back. This is what Luke, Dan and Ryan’s actions meant to the cat’s owners: “We cannot thank these guys enough for what they have done, as we would have never known what had happened to our cat. Thanks to them, we have got our boy back and have put him to rest in our garden which has brought so much comfort to us all. Please could you recognise the efforts they went to, above and beyond their jobs, and it’s nice to know there are still people who do much more than just their jobs and care. Many thanks!” Sometimes it is the small gestures that mean so much. Well done Luke, Dan and Ryan!

HRS goes global New collaboration with Canadian companies

The Chevron Group is part of the Work Zone Safety Group which has companies across Europe including Ramudden, Fero and AVS. In February 2022, Canadian companies, Stinson Equipment Limited (Stinson Owl-Lite), Stinson ITS Inc., Direct Traffic Management and Dynamic Traffic Control Services joined the Work Zone Safety Group. This has brought a wider international dimension to the Group and opened up new opportunities for collaboration and partnerships, particularly in digitalisation and innovation. In March, Roger Poeth and James Jarrett from HRS spent a great couple of days with Stinson and Direct Traffic Management discussing the rollout of digital solutions that can improve safety, reduce costs and improve the carbon footprint of work zone maintenance in Canada. They met key stakeholders including the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario who showed great interest in the digital solutions we offer.

Chevron goes to Africa The Chevron Group has not delivered traffic management in Africa but our logo was there as part of our support to colleagues in Ramudden who took part in the East African Safari Classic Rally in Kenya. The team of Patrik Sandell and Henrik Bolinder came second overall which is a fantastic achievement. Interestingly, the Safari Rally first took place in 1953 under the name the East African Coronation Rally as a motoring event to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of England.

Intertraffic in Amsterdam Chevron TM and HRS attended Intertraffic in Amsterdam recently as part of the Work Zone Safety Group stand. We joined colleagues from Ramudden, Fero and AVS at the Intertraffic exhibition which is billed as the “world’s leading platform for traffic technology professionals.” Delegates attending the event had the opportunity to hear how Chevron TM and HRS are leading the drive towards digitalisation of traffic management in the UK and learn more about the products and solutions which HRS provides. It was an excellent opportunity to put Chevron on the global stage.

Safety is our business Our most recent ESG Team award winners Each month, our ESG Team awards employees who put safety first and reflect our company values of ‘safety is our business’ and ‘leading by example’. These awards recognise employees who exceed our expectations in regard to health and safety at work, support colleagues’ physical and mental wellbeing, and make the safety of our clients and the general public a priority. Meet our winners for January and February.

J anuary winner Our January winner was Levi McLean from our Winchester depot. We have told Levi’s story in the Random Acts of Kindness section on p3 but his concern and

Crain Wood

compassion for a vulnerable lady earned him the Safety Award for January. Well done Levi.

F ebruary winners We had two winners in February – Craig Wood and Shaun Mosely. Following a number of high-profile incursions at the end of 2021 on our Eastern CWF (ACE) contract, Craig and Shaun met with the key stakeholders on the scheme – HW Martin, National Highways and HRS – to review the incidents and identify solutions. HRS Intellicam® units were deployed on all slip road and carriage closures as an additional measure to improve the safety of

Shaun Mosely

our workforce and those working within the closures. This has been incredibly successful with National Highways moving to mandate this best practice across the supply chain in Areas 6 & 8. Well done to Craig and Shaun for ‘Championing our customers’, ‘Leading by example’ and ensuring that ‘Safety is our business’.

BQF safety award Our focus and commitment to health and safety was formally recognised by BQF who awarded us the Excellence in Creating a Healthy, Safe Culture award at the recent award ceremony in London. This award recognises companies who are creating a culture that places everyone’s health, safety and wellbeing at the heart of what they do.

Jamie Bowen and Stephanie Berwick collecting our BQF Award

We should all take a collective bow.

Things they say…

Great teamwork

Championing our customers is at the heart of what we do. We work every day to deliver for our customers, so it is always a pleasure when they take the time to tell us what they think. This is some of the feedback we have received over the past few months…

Fantastic achievement Fantastic achievement for James Frearson, and the team at Chevron Finedon depot who were awarded a Gold Card from Ringway Jacobs for “the execution of works on Church Lane, Arlesey. Traffic management, site set up, pedestrian management and delivery of the works was virtually faultless.” Orbital, Chevron and Ian

This is a fantastic example of the service our teams deliver each and every day.

Taylor

For the execution of works Traffic Management, Site on Church Lane, Arlesey. and delivery of the works set up, Pedestrian Management was virtually faultless. Managing Director

A big thank you Chevron Green Services was contracted to remove hazardous trees and carry out vegetation clearance along a boundary fence on the residential side of the A47 on behalf of Great Yarmouth Borough Council. The feedback read… “Just to say a big thank you for getting the trees sorted on the Western Road allotment site. The team worked really hard sorting what needed doing around the weather this week, and the difference clearing the overhanging branches is brilliant. Please pass a big thank you on to the team.” They also completed a siding out job in Area 7 & 9 on behalf of Kier and National Highways who simply said: “Wow! It looks unrecognisable!!! Please pass my thanks on to the guys who did the work!”

Impressive work ethic Our client A E Yates was very impressed with the work ethic of Glynn Ruddy from our Manchester depot who kept their site wellmaintained and clean. They rewarded Glynn (right) with a £25 Love2shop voucher.

Class One TM has a great team of operatives who constantly deliver a first-class service to our customers so we are always delighted and proud to receive positive feedback for the work our guys are doing. We received the following customer comment: “All in all a good weekend’s work. Thanks to Stephen Briody and his guys, teamwork makes the dream work!”

Proactive in managing works Recently, we were contacted by a Programme Delivery Team Leader for National Highways who shared fantastic feedback on the A14 J1320 Drainage Renewal Scheme. The Project Manager on this scheme had left and while the process of appointing a new one was underway, Shaun Moseley from Chevron TM and Reece Tomlinson from Carnell Group continued working and managing the scheme. When the new PM took up the role, Shaun and Reece had already planned the required surveys, had booked in the required resources, had a draft programme ready and TM plans drawn up. They helped the new PM get up to speed and gave her their full support to get the job over the line. As a result of their actions, the scheme completed on time, as planned. The Programme Delivery Team Leader for National Highways said: “This scheme is a big contribution to the regional output target for National Highways, and is a testament to the good work from the teams at both Carnell and Chevron in being proactive in managing works to support us and the Asset Community East. A big thanks to Reece and Shaun for their help on this scheme.”

Voice of the Employee An update from Chris Woodroofe on Chevron’s feedback sessions We began the Voice of the Employee (VoE) process in December 2021 with three depots – Detling, Godalming and Winchester. Since then, the remaining 16 traffic management depots have all had the opportunity to contribute their thoughts and ideas to the following three questions: What’s it like to work at Chevron? If you were in charge, what would you change? What would you never change? I would like to thank those who assisted with the organisation of these sessions as well as all who have participated – the VoE team visited 19 depots, have run 39 sessions and met over 200 people.

“Your contributions will support our desire to make Chevron a great place to work.” Supporting Samaritans

As per the plan we’ve communicated, I will be reviewing all the feedback received with my senior leadership team and the HR team in early April. Whilst 20% of the operational teams participated in the VoE sessions, I promised that 100% would receive the feedback. This will begin in late April and will be led by myself and my senior leadership team. Following the feedback sessions, you can expect me to own one or two national actions (relevant to all depots) and the Regional Managing Directors will then own at least one action specific to their areas. I am anticipating that these actions will fall into the following categories: Clarification – where we can share some additional information to address the feedback Working groups – this is where I will look for volunteers to help drive change in a particular area I’m really looking forward to getting started with the feedback sessions. Thanks again for your contributions. Chris Woodroofe Chief Operating Officer

Our Traffic Management Operatives regularly encounter vulnerable people, particularly at night, many of whom are suffering with mental health issues and suicidal thoughts. Worryingly, the number of times our teams have encountered potentially suicidal people has more than doubled since the first lockdown in March 2020. It is for this reason that Chevron TM donated £5,000 to Samaritans. We want to do what we can to reduce these numbers and support people in their darkest hour.

In January we were awarded £5,000 from our parent company Triton Partners as an ESG Governance Award. This was in recognition for the work that our ESG team did towards ISO certification for the Chevron Group. The team decided to give this money to Samaritans. While our operatives provide support and help at the point of immediate danger, the work Samaritans does to support vulnerable people in the longer term is immense and we are delighted to support them.

e m o c l e W aboard Two new businesses join the Chevron Group At the end of 2021, the Chevron Group welcomed two new businesses to our group of companies, Shift Traffic Events and Highway Barrier Solutions (HBS). Shift is headquartered in Scunthorpe and specialises in traffic management within the events and utilities sectors while HBS is based in Belfast with depots across Northern Ireland and Scotland. The two companies have a combined workforce of over 280 people and will open up new geographical and product markets. We will see Shift and HBS working closer with other businesses across the Group over the course of this year but in the meantime, welcome aboard!

Leader of the pack We always knew Jamie Bowen, our Head of ESG and Improvement was a top guy but now he is an Established Leader, having been named the UK’s Established Leader in the BQF UK Excellence Awards. Jamie won this award because of his “strong track record of leading change and transformation across a wide-ranging portfolio, developing people and managing multiple complex stakeholders and leading their organization into the future ever-changing environments.” Well done Jamie.

Marathon challenge Colin Hicks’ journey from TMO to marathon runner It’s hard to believe that the desire to run the London Marathon could begin in a traffic management van but that is exactly where Colin Hicks’ journey began. Colin is an Estimator for Chevron TM but started out on the ground as a TMO. Back in 2014, he was part of a team that was responsible for installing the blue racing line along the London Marathon course. The London Marathon designer, who was a former elite athlete travelled the course with Colin as he installed the TM. The race designer needed to verify the integrity of the course but over the 26 miles, his enthusiasm for running must have rubbed off on Colin. Fast forward eight years and Colin has secured a place on the starting line of the London Marathon running on behalf of RNIB. He has described the journey from TMO to marathon runner: “I was part of the team who installed the TM for the London Marathon for three years and after each installation,

we were awarded a medal for working on the marathon route. So while I have three medals, I don’t feel like I have earned them. “But the running seed was sown and I was determined to add a fourth medal to the collection as a runner. It’s taken many years of applying and trying, and this year it’s finally happening! “I’ve chosen the RNIB as my chosen charity. It’s quite personal as my family has a hereditary eye disorder called Retinitis Pigmentosa which has led to a loss of sight in some of my relatives.” We just love this story, how TM has led to marathon running. We wish Colin every success with his training programme in the lead up to the Marathon and of course on the day itself, 2 October 2022. Colin has set up a JustGiving page so if you would like to contribute, please scan the QR code.

DIY SOS

Chevron TM has a long history of supporting the communities in which we operate. In February we were approached by the production company for the BBC’s DIY SOS, requesting traffic management services. DIY SOS was visiting Fegg Hayes in Stoke-on-Trent to create a community growing field and a multi-use outdoor space for Sylvester Community Trust and Fegg Hayes Residents’ Association. Our teams provided footway closures for the duration of the build and marshalling services to support a safe site set-up and pack down. Presenter Nick Knowles and builders Billy Byrne and Chris Frediani tried their hand at traffic management while they were on site but they have a long way to go before they can take on the Chevron crews. We are proud to be part of the team that created a new community space for Fegg Hayes and wish them every success with their plans. Keep an eye out for the show when it airs on BBC One.

Humanitarian aid for Ukraine We have all been watching in horror as the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to grow. We have been touched by images of Ukrainian women, children, elderly and disabled people fleeing the war, leaving their lives and possession behind and seeking help and support in neighbouring countries. We have questioned how we can help. We have used our partnership with the #BecauseICan initiative to support an aid convoy to Ukraine. Led by Tim Bradshaw of Sandstone Communications, the convoy travelled to Ukraine where we delivered over 300 sleeping bags and 5,000 meals directly to those who need it so badly. We plan to continue to work with Tim and our Work Zone Safety Group partners in Europe to deliver more support to the ongoing humanitarian challenge. #BecauseICan

Reduce Reuse Recycle Collaboration creates a wellbeing area We have a great example of collaboration across the Chevron Group with Chevron Green Services and Chevron Traffic Management. Recently, Ryan McCormick from our Chevron Green Services depot in Curdridge visited the Chevron Traffic Management depot in Winchester to create a wellbeing area for the depot staff. With a focus on sustainability, Andy Meldrum and Ginny Angora from the Winchester depot found some old, out of use cones and traffic lights to use as planters. Ryan bought along some peat-free soil and bee-friendly flowers to plant up and created a lovely area for the Winchester team to enjoy in the good weather, along with the bees, of course. We think this could be rolled out across many depots as a way to repurpose old equipment and support our ESG priorities. Do you have space for a wellbeing area in your depot, yard or office? If so, how could you enhance it with a few planters and flowers? We’d love to see what you do. Send your photos to brand@ChevronTM.com.

Top class! Congratulations to HRS who has secured ISO/IEC 27001certification. This is a massive achievement which is thanks to a tremendous team effort from across the business. The ISO/IEC 27001 standard is confirmation of the importance HRS places on information security, not just for ourselves but for our customers. Congratulations also go to Class One TM who received their Achilles Certificate of Audit which confirms their commitment to strict health, safety, environment and quality practices.

Absent friends

The Chevon Group has lost two Traffic Management Operatives over the last two months. Kevin Jarvis was tragically killed in an accident while on duty for Chevron TM and Jim Whitton, from Class One TM, lost his battle with cancer. Kevin and Jim were muchloved colleagues and friends who will be sadly missed by everyone who knew them.

Kevin Jarvis To all who knew Kev, he was a quiet, unassuming man who got on with the job. Having spent over 30 years in traffic management, he had a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will be hard to replace. He was a TMSO that we all listened to and respected and will be sorely missed. Kev’s funeral took place on Friday 25 March and was an emotional but beautiful send off to a colleague and friend who was so tragically killed while at work. His colleagues at Stafford formed a guard of honour at the depot to welcome Kev for the final time. He was escorted out on a TM vehicle as he checked out of his last shift at Stafford depot. The M6 was closed off so Kev could take his final journey. He was escorted on the M6 by all of the Area 9 supply chain as well as National Highways and Kier Highways.

It was a fantastic turnout to pay respects to an amazing TM family member who will be greatly missed by all. RIP Kev.

Jim Whitton Class One TM was shocked by the sudden death of their colleague, Jim Whitton who died at the end of February. Jim had been a traffic management operative at Class One TM for five years, and while he had been suffering from late-stage cancer, his death was very unexpected. It has devastated the Class One team and the wider TM community in Scotland. Jim joined Class One TM in 2017 and was a polite, respectful and hard-working man who was well-liked by his colleagues and clients. Mike Healey, MD for Class One TM described Jim, quite simply, as a “gentleman and one of our own.” Our thoughts are with Jim’s wife and family and our colleagues in Scotland who are missing a much-loved colleague and friend.
