There is one word I suggest we banish from our thoughts, minds and vocabulary. It’s time we cast out the infamous, the outrageous, the horrible word… “Should”. I should go to the gym, I should eat healthier, I should call my family.

This word controls us and leaves us in a state of limbo; wanting and yearning but never reaching our dreams and goals. It creates feelings of guilt and unsatisfactory mediocrity. Choose today to deport “Should”; expel this enemy to the ends of the earth! Cast away this thought and replace it with the word “Could”. I could go to the gym, I could eat healthier, I could call my family. All of a sudden, with this simple switch, YOU are

now the one in control; YOU are the one creating your own majestic destiny. Accept the fact that if you really wanted to, you would.

When “Should” comes knocking, make a choice and then give yourself some props for taking control of your fabulous future! Thoughts lead to feelings, feelings lead to actions and actions shape what is to come. May your thoughts be positive, healthy, and bright…

May your purpose in this life be brighter.

Remembering Dr. Vagiy

They already had one son, and their next two children were both delivered by Dr Vagiy who spent 26 Christmases with the Meeks over the years that followed. Their son, Michael, was named after ‘Uncle’ Mike Vagiy.

House calls were a big part of the life of a small town doctor. Janet recalls him going out five times in one night. She and her husband would wake up to the sound of the screen door opening and closing.

The late Mrs. Shepperd, phone operator in 1963, always knew his whereabouts so she could reach him in case of an emergency. Janet remembers a different era of technology, “Our ringtone at the duplex was two short rings and one long ring, and Mike [Dr Vagiy] would call the operator and tell her ‘I’ll be at this house until such and such time’... he always had to check in.”

His good karma seems to have come back to him since he won the lottery at least once.

When asked when he would retire Dr Vagiy simply responded ‘what would I do then?’ Georgie MacKenzie worked as his assistant for 19 years and she described him as very dedicated. “He really cared about his patients,” she said.

His devotion to his practice shone through in the time he spent caring for patients. He looked after my grandfather, Henry Grube, when Henry was diagnosed with multiple myloma, an aggressive form of cancer, in the early 1980s.

“He would stop by the farm to take blood samples from Henry on his way into Kamloops before his rounds at 6am.” Anne Grube, Henry’s daughter and my mother, remembers him stopping for a coffee and a visit, and to collect a sample which Henry otherwise would have had to drive into Kamloops to do. As a result of Dr Vagiy’s frequent trips to the city, he had over 500,000 kms on his latest vehicle.

Finally retiring in 2005, at the age of 76 and after 42 years of service to the community, Dr Vagiy stuck to his routine of lunching with friends at the Chase Cafe. What he had was never on the menu; it was always something special that owner George Biniaris would cook up for him.

Working at the Chase Cafe last year I was fortunate to get to know Dr Vagiy a little bit, since he came in nearly every day, just as he had been doing since 1973.

Always dignified, Dr Vagiy was polite and well dressed with a lilting accent and a smile ready for anyone who greeted him.

And everyone greeted him. People of all generations would say hello, ask him how he was. I remember his sense of humour shining through on days when he wasn’t feeling too well.

He often mentioned how there was no better place to work and live than Chase. He was a devoted doctor and a committed member of the community who believed deeply in the strength of the small town.

I went back to the Chase Cafe to ask about memories of Dr Vagiy and there came stories from every table; Angie Price and he shared a love for the Minnesota Vikings football team, an affinity no one was able to explain to me. Leslie Downie worked relief shifts at the Chase clinic and remembers him always being very polite. Renee Blanc was one of the many babies he delivered, or whose births he attended, and her son recalled the quality treats that Dr Vagiy passed out at Halloween.

While Dr Vagiy has no family in Chase, he’ll be remembered for the role he played in so many others.

There is a code of ethics, including filling in holes that you dig and properly disposing of metal junk that you find like old nails.

It’s not as simple as waving the detector around and finding treasure, which is why Kennedy wants to start a group based around the activity.

A Shuswap and Area Metal Detector Club would help people get started and provide mentorship opportunites.

There could also be discussions around local laws related to digging, safety issues sharing find-stories.

TEN questions With...

Each week we’ll talk to a different person in town. This week we are talking to Angie McLaren, who works as a School Support Worker assisting students that need help with their learning in Chase.

Q • What is the best thing about working with kids?

A • The connections and possibly a difference we can make in a young person’s life. At our school, we believe it takes the entire community to raise a child so we do it with passion and are genuinely concerned for everyone’s well being.

Q • What’s your favorite springtime activity?

A • My favourite springtime activity is probably riding my bike. I have ridden a bike since I was a young girl!

Q • What’s your favorite place around here?

A • All the areas you can connect with nature; the switchbacks, river, and lake. In saying that, I can’t forget that it’s also just being around town and having everyone know who you are makes it a very special place. We live in a friendly town!

Q • Whats your favorite thing to grow in your garden and why?

A • At our house, I do the flower gardening and I love my hostas! My husband and I also grow vegetables and have fruit trees.

Even though we live on a small lot, we still yield large amounts of produce and manage to eat it during summer and fall, and preserve it for winter. We have even called ourselves, “The McLaren Farm.”

Q • What do you think Chase needs?

A • Now remember this is just what I see in my little corner. I believe Chase needs sidewalks out in front of our schools;

more walkways for the public around the riparian zone of Chase Creek and other areas; and a system of refusing peoples garbage at the curb side, if it has recyclables in it. And recycling around garbage cans, so everything doesn’t go into the trash.

Q • Whats your favorite board game?

A • I don’t really have a favourite board game, but I do love playing board and card games. At school, we have the best times playing games as a group, it’s a great way to connect with any kid. At home, their is nothing better than ending the lack of conversation with friends and family with a good game.

Q • What do you miss most about being a kid?

A • I miss the freedom to be able to play and do those things I so struggle to find the time for, or are unable to do now.

Q • Have you learned anything new recently?

A •How lucky those of us that have our health really are as we go through life.

In recent years, I have watched those I love, young and old, struggle with health issues. If we don’t have health it really doesn’t matter how much money we have.

Q • Seen any good movies lately?

A • I haven’t watched a good movie lately but I have learned to love reading books again. My last great reads were the “Storyteller” by Jodi Picoult and “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn.

OBITUARY

Dr. Michael Vagyi

Born in Hungary on March 29, 1930, Dr. Vagyi immigrated to Halifax Canada on March 14, 1957.

He then moved to British Columbia and worked in Penticton Hospital as an orderly where he learned his English then St. Paul’s Vancouver Hospital as an intern. He settled in Chase in 1971 and began a 23 year medical practice serving the community he loved. He passed away peacefully on April 2, 2015 at the age of 86 in Royal Inland Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Robert Baker, Kidney Clinic, ACU, 7 North and all the nurses for his excellent care.

He leaves behind his brother Jeno, sister in law Maria, nephew James, niece Susan all of Hungary and his longtime Companion Nadeen of Kamloops. Dr. Vagyi had many special life-long friends and touched the hearts of all who knew him. He was an amazing, dedicated doctor who was devoted to providing care for all in need.

OBITUARY Gertrude May Birkeland

Mrs. Gertrude (Tonnie) Birkeland passed away at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops in the early morning of March 30, 2015.

She died peacefully of old age in her sleep at the age of 92 years.

In the days prior to passing, she was visited, surrounded and supported by friends and by her sons’ families which gave her great pleasure.

Tonnie was predeceased by her husband, Odd Arnold Birkeland, in November, 2000. She is survived by her sister Ann (Massachusetts), sons, Arne (North Vancouver, Whistler, Tofino, BC) and Eric (Loyalton, California), their wives and granddaughters Emilie, Tara and Jessica, great grandsons, nephews and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces, and her puppy “Laddie”.

Tonnie was borne in North Bennington, Vermont, on March 3, 1926 to her parents, Walter and Nellie Harrington. Following High School in Vermont, she received her Nursing Certification, then worked as a Registered Nurse at various locations for approximately 30 years.

She met her husband, Odd Arnold Birkeland, while living in Vermont. They were married in 1943 and resided in Vermont and New York State until 1952 when the family immigrated to Kimberley, BC. Tonnie and Odd moved to Chase in 1977 and retired in Chase in 1981.

Tonnie was loved and respected by many in the Chase community. She volunteered with the choir and as organist at St. Andres All Saints Church for many years. She donated property to Sunshore Golf Course when residing on Pine Street. She was actively involved in the duplicate bridge club, the golf club, and participated in many seniors’ events in Chase over the years. She lived on her own on Arbutus Street until January, 2015.

A Memorial Service and Reception is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Sunday, April 12, at the Chase Community Center. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Schoening’s Funeral Services in Kamloops. She will be cremated and buried with her husband in the family plots at the Chase Cemetery.

Roderick Bryan McConnell

In loving memory of Roderick Bryan McConnell.

June 26, 1955 to March 31, 2015.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rod McConnel after a brief illness.

Rod will be greatly missed by his mother, Shirley, his best friend, Shannon, his four sons, Kyle, Bryan, Stephen & Sheldon, three daughters, Trisha, Tanya and Tonia, his siblings Wayne and Maureen, his 17 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Pauline (2005), his brother Leslie (2006) and his father Lloyd (2008).

He will be remembered most for his sense of humour, his love of music (particularly his harmonica) and most importantly his love for his family.

No funeral service by request; however a Celebration of Life will be held later this spring.

SEED IT AND REAP This spring we are planting trees and we picked up some egg layers. Around our trees we lay cardboard covered in wood chips. The decomposition of both promote a fungal soil biology. We will inoculate the wood chip with mycelium to promote diversity. The covering protects the tree from competition and drought. When the grass tries to come back in a few years, just do it again.

Plastic mulch is boring, especially for the tree. My chickens had mites.

I used Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2), diatomaceous earth and a bit of the blow torch to curtail them. We have a coop on wheels that i move twice a week along with a mesh fencing to contain them. This movement spreads the manure and helps control disease, pests. There is a practicality to farming without chemicals.

Memorial Park hosts Easter

With the help of gracious volunteers, Chase Lions hosted an Easter Event, with barbecued Hot Dogs, Cake, beverages and an goodie bag for the kids.

With many families home for the holiday, visitors came from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Vancouver and even two families from Germany stopped for a coffee and hot dog.
