Beloved Chase community member, Fran Connett, receives the first Board Award of Recognition School District No. 73

On Monday, May 6, 2024, The Kamloops-Thompson Board of Education joined together with the Chase Secondary staff and district community to honour Fran Connett with the first ever Board Award of Recognition.

“I was pleased to honour Fran Connett on behalf of the Board of Education with the first Board Award of Recognition,” stated Board Chair Heather Grieve. “On April 8, 2024, the Board learned that in the review of the OWL Award Committee applications that the Committee felt that there was a need to introduce an award that recognizes individuals who have significantly impacted public education within the district community because of service that has resulted in bringing the core value commitments of the District Strategic Plan alive. At that meeting, the Board passed a motion to start the Board Award of Recognition with Fran being the first recipient.”

“As the Chair of the OWL Award for Excellence in Public Education Committee, I am so proud of committee members for recognizing the need for a District Awards program for staff, and bringing forward Fran Connett as the first recipient,” shared Superintendent Dr. Rhonda Nixon. “During Monday’s event, the community heard all that Fran has accomplished in terms of immeasurable, positive impact on individuals through her relationships and connections over the years in the Chase community and in the district.”

For over two decades, Fran Connett has made a profound impact on the lives of countless students, staff, and families in the community of Chase. Fran is a dedicated individual who runs the Chase Secondary School cafeteria—she is committed to ensuring no student goes hungry, serving nutritious and hearty breakfasts and lunches, and doing it all with kindness, generosity, and a smile. Her impact goes beyond the food she serves, as one community member shared, “she is the grandmother of our school and she made everyone feel like they belonged.”

As Fran prepares for retirement, her community was excited to celebrate her and all that she has given to the students of Chase Secondary School. Principal Greg Gartrell organized a community celebration on May 6, alongside the School Board meeting at his school, to honour Fran’s immeasurable impact and join the Board of Education in honouring her with the Board Award of Recognition. In Greg’s words: “Tonight we are acknowledging Fran Connett, lovingly known as Frannie in our community, who has served students at our school cafeteria for the last 20 years. She does so much more than just serve food, she serves love, and she is a person that everybody knows they can go to in a time of need.

Frannie’s been here for everybody in our community for the last 20 years and we just want to make sure she knows how much she’s appreciated.”

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Chase Heat have named Kyle Evans as their new Head Coach and General Manager, the club announced Tuesday.

Evans joins the Heat following a successful year with the VIJHL’s Campbell River Storm, who he led to a first place finish with a record of 36-10-1-1 during the 2023/24 season. Prior to his time in Campbell River, Evans served as the Head Coach of the North Island Silvertips U18 AAA team, as well as an assistant coach with the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals and the VIJHL’s Saanich Predators.

“The Heat are very excited to have Kyle join us in the role of Head Coach and General Manager,” says Chase Heat president Darryl Adamson. “Kyle is bringing a winning culture and a positive outlook to our player development, which should help our club change direction in the upcoming season. We cannot wait to get this season going.”

Evans will start in his new role immediately and look to solidify a young, talented roster that loses just a pair of graduating 20-year olds.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity to join the Heat organization and become part of the Chase community,” says Evans. “I’m excited to create a family-like environment where our players can develop themselves for higher levels of hockey. Our program will be built around competition and

hard work, with players who are excited to improve themselves every day. Off the ice, you can expect a group that will be working hard to integrate themselves within the community.”

Evans says there are many reasons why Heat fans should expect success in 2024/25 and beyond following a fourth place finish in the Doug Birks division.

“It was clear after our initial conversations that the organization was committed to improving the program and providing the resources necessary for our players and staff to develop,” he says. “I believe this program has a lot of foundational pieces in place that you see in successful programs. There’s a lot of passion that exists within the community for the Heat, and I’m honoured to get to help build a program the community will be proud of. I’m excited to get to work and start building towards our vision of making Chase a hockey destination.”

The Heat will make further announcements regarding preparations for the upcoming season, including main camp dates and registration info, in the coming weeks.

Prevent aquatic invasive species with these steps: Clean-Drain-Dry and stop for watercraft inspection Invasive Species Action Month offers timely reminder for Shuswap boaters and watercraft users submitted by Shuswap Watershed Council

Spring in the Shuswap has many thinking about boating, paddling, and fishing.

The month of May is designated as Invasive Species Action Month – a timely reminder for boaters and watercraft users to be vigilant and take steps to prevent the movement of aquatic invasive species into or around the Shuswap.

Two invasive species of utmost concern are Zebra and Quagga Mussels (ZQM): small freshwater mussels from Europe that have invaded waters in the Great Lakes, Manitoba, and many watersheds in the US including as nearby as Idaho. Thankfully, ZQM have not invaded lakes in BC or our nearest neighbour Alberta.

“Zebra and quagga mussels grow and attach to anything below the water’s surface like boat hulls, dock pilings, inside pipes and hydro-electric facilities, and even inside engine compartments,” says Erin Vieira, program manager for the Shuswap Watershed Council. “The mussels form in colonies and removing them would require ongoing maintenance now estimated at a cost of up to $129 million per year for BC residents.”

Vieira highlights that the $129 million is a new annual cost estimate described in an economic impact report that the Province of BC released in 2023. The cost is up significantly from a previous estimate of approximately $43 million to deal with an invasion of invasive mussels in BC.

Other negative impacts by zebra and quagga mussels include spoiling water quality and outcompeting native species for food. This puts the lake ecosystem and our drinking water at risk.

When the mussels die, their small sharp shells wash up on shorelines and beaches, ruining our enjoyment of water-based activities.

Once zebra or quagga mussels are established in a lake, there are no effective means of eliminating them – only ongoing maintenance to manage the colonies. They reproduce prolifically, leading to massive infestations.

Clean-drain-dry + stop for watercraft inspection Invasive mussels move from one lake to another via watercraft: they attach directly to a surface or get trapped in small compartments of water within the watercraft.

A watercraft from outside BC could potentially be infested with invasive mussels. It could take just one infested watercraft launching into the Shuswap to start a new population of invasive mussels. There are prevention measures that boat and watercraft owners need to follow.

Vieira says it’s important to practice CleanDrain-Dry, a three-step process to help eliminate invasive species from a watercraft: • After removing it from the water, clean your boat or watercraft to remove mud, plant material,

This year’s funds raised from this auction have been earmarked specifically towards the purchase of a significant new piece of playground equipment to be added to Centennial Park this coming summer. Stay tuned for updates and grand opening dates for this exciting project.

Zebra and quagga mussels grow to about 1 centimeter in diameter and may be attached to watercraft or inside compartments or other hardto-spot areas. Juvenile mussels are free-swimming and microscopic – impossible to detect with the human eye.

“Additionally, It’s very important that travellers with watercraft stop at watercraft inspection stations,” Vieira adds. Highway-side inspection stations are set up near entry-points to BC and are staffed by the BC Conservation Officer Service. All travellers with watercraft must stop.

Watercraft will be inspected and decontaminated, if needed, all free of charge. Watercraft inspection is mandatory, and failing to stop for inspection carries a heavy fine.

Any suspected transport, possession, or sightings of zebra and quagga mussels should be reported to the Provincial RAPP line at 1-877-9527277. Fran Connett Recongized

The recognition event was filled with energy and love from the community as community members, friends, family, and students filled the Chase school gym to celebrate their beloved community member. At the event, after being honoured with the Board Recognition Award, Fran expressed feelings of being overwhelmed with emotions and grateful for the honour.

While little words were shared, emotions of gratitude were felt by all in the room.

Fran’s positive and immense impact on Chase, and

specifically Chase Secondary School, will be felt throughout the community for generations to come. As Diane Jules, Aboriginal Education Council Director and Trustee of the Kamloops-Thompson School Board, explains, “Frannie is a legend. Even though she won’t be in our kitchen with our students anymore, her name will resonate in the hallways for generations to come. No one will ever beat Chase Secondary Frannie.
