RCMP REPORT submitted by Chase RCMP Detachment

INTRUDER- On May 3, 2024 at 2:09 am, Chase RCMP responded to a break and enter in progress at a residence on Kamloops Shuswap Road. The caller reported that a man entered his house and woke him up – by crawling into bed beside him. The intruder was very drunk but the caller managed to remove him from the house. When Police arrived, they found the intruder - a 26-year-old man from Chase - lying on the side of the road. He was arrested, but the victim declined to pursue charges. The intruder was released from Police custody to the care of a sober friend.

LOST MUSHROOM PICKER- On May 9 at 6:12 pm, Chase RCMP were requested to assist in the search for a lost mushroom picker. The caller reported he became separated from his friend while harvesting mushrooms in the forest near Adams Lake. The missing friend was said to have health and mobility issues and was not carrying any supplies. The caller searched for hours before engaging Police, who in turn requested assistance from Search and Rescue.

Police were helping with the search when the lost friend emerged from the forest. He was tired and thirsty but otherwise unharmed. Unfortunately, he didn’t have many mushrooms to show for his efforts.

BEAR-SPRAY ASSAULT- On May 5 at 9:18 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a disturbance at a commercial address in Celista. The caller reported they thought someone had been bear-sprayed.

Police spoke with another witness who said there was an argument between an older male customer and two younger men. The two younger men left briefly, then returned and bear-sprayed the older man. All three were believed to be local but have not been identified.

THEFT- On May 10 at 1:37 am, Chase RCMP were advised of theft at a residential address on Okanagan Avenue in Chase. The caller reported that his cell phone and Nintendo switch were stolen from his enclosed back patio. When he called his own phone, a man answered then hung up. The ‘find my phone’ app showed that the phone was in Whispering Pines Mobile Home Park before the battery died. Police attended the last known location but were unable to locate the phone.

ROAD RAGE- On May 10 at 2:37 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a driving complaint on Squilax Anglemont Road. The caller reported a silver BMW and a black pickup were speeding and appeared to be chasing each other. Shortly thereafter, Chase RCMP

were advised of a collision on the Trans-Canada Highway, west of Chase. Police were told that a black pickup rammed a silver BMW several times.

The investigation determined that the two drivers were family members, involved in a dispute, and the collision was not accidental. Neither driver was seriously injured however both vehicles sustained significant damage. Police expect to recommend charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE - On May 11 at approximately 2:00 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a suspicious vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway. The caller reported that a newer model grey Toyota Camry followed her from Kamloops to Pritchard after she honked her horn at the driver. She became concerned about the other driver’s intentions and phoned a family member to meet her at the store. The Camry followed the caller to the store, then turned around and returned to the highway. The driver was described as a middleaged Caucasian man. Police did not locate the vehicle.

FATAL COLLISION - On May 11 at 10:20 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle collision on Squilax Anglemont Road in Celista. Police attended with BC Ambulance Service and Celista Fire Department. Police learned that the vehicle was travelling westbound when it skidded off the road and over an embankment. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased on location. There were no other passengers. A local resident witnessed the collision and provided emergency first aid until first responders arrived.

Chase RCMP would like to extend condolences to the affected family and friends.

ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON - On May 16 at 7:49 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of an assault which had just occurred at a commercial address on Shuswap Avenue in Chase. The victim and witness explained that they were perusing the inventory at a local business when a large shirtless male came out from behind the building and started yelling and swearing at them. The male was carrying a blunt instrument which he used to strike the victim.

The victim and witness escaped and attended the Chase RCMP Detachment where Police obtained statements and photos of injuries. Police have identified a suspect and the investigation is on-going.

Letter to the Editor Hi Chase, I’m sure you’ve all seen me either riding my bike or walking around Chase over the past 20 years or so. That’s how I met Bob. Not long after I moved to Chase I got a little dog called Max and later on one called Bobby. I walked these dogs all around Chase and through the parks.

And practically every day, be it morning, noon, or night I would bump into Bob and his precious little beagle Roxie. He always took the time to talk to me and my dogs and everyone else he met. I swear he and Roxie would walk 100 miles a week. You would see them everywhere, sometimes miles from their home.

I felt so sad for him when he lost his beloved Roxy. And as sad as he was, it didn’t stop him from talking to everyone nonetheless.

I sure do miss his smiling face around town, and I’m sure everyone else in Chase will agree with this.

I never didn’t know his last name, I didn’t need to. To me he was just Bob. With the greatest respect for you Bob East.

Recognition Ceremony NIB RCMP liaison, Constable Jarret Cottrell, was honoured at a Recognition Ceremony in April, acknowledging the next step in his career journey, which involves being promoted to Corporal and moving to Cranbrook, BC. Though sorry to see him go, NIB members are pleased with this vocational and personal development and wish him well with the adventures to come.

Fire Safety Community preparedness is underway to protect the NIB community and residents during wildfire season. FireSmart facts and safety action were provided with regard to yards, decks, porches, gutters, eaves, vents, and fences adjacent to residences. SKWLĀX TE SECWÉPEMCULECW (SteS) Welcome Home Event April 24, 2024 marked a very special day in Skwlāx te Secwépemculecw history. Band members, partners and supporters were joined by Chief Lynn Kenoras-Duck Chief of Adams Lake and Chief Irvin Wai of Neskonlith, along with Federal Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu and other civic politicians to celebrate the opening of the Dancing Fawn II residential development, the first of four new subdivisions to be constructed in the wake of the 2023 Bush Creek East Wildfire. Construction, design, and management services have been provided

by Skwlāx Resource Management, a bandowned company. The Welcome Home event included cultural components featuring a drum circle and prayer. Attendees toured the wildfire affected areas and the Rapid Housing units. Additional subdivision residences are to be completed in coming months.

Council News Julie John was acclaimed to the position of Councillor with SteS in March. Councillor Julie earned a Bachelor of Tourism Degree, with a major in marketing and a minor in entrepreneurship from Thompson Rivers University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Indigenous Business & Leadership from Simon Fraser University. She looks forward to learning additional skills in her new position and growing in the process.

Also in March, Jenny John joined Council by acclamation, as Housing Chair. Her education background includes Thompson Rivers University Events & Convention Management Certification, a Tourism Management degree, and Executive Master of Business Administration in Indigenous Business Leadership from Simon Fraser University. Councillor Jenny has been busy gathering information and learning about SteS policies and procedures in order to assist with making informed decisions.

Blessing the Earth Prior to removal of last summer’s burned and damaged timber from band lands, a ‘Blessing Mother Earth’ ceremony was held this past spring, which included a pipe ceremony.

Cultural Heritage Another busy year is planned, or in progress, for the SteS Cultural Heritage Department.

Many of the 2024 projects are related to post-

Bush Creek East wildfire fieldwork, large scale highway projects, and research studies. Some of the archaeological projects include the Rapid Rebuild subdivisions at four locations, Band Lot Debris/Soil Remediation, Timber Harvesting, fireguard assessments, Lease Lot Rebuild, Squilāx Mountain Stewardship Program, Tappen-MOTI Site Alteration program, Heritage Policy Development, and several ongoing analysis investigations.

Ancient tools have been recovered from excavations at the Little Shuswap Road East residence site: a variety of arrowheads (points) made from chert, basalt, and chalcedony, cores, and microblades which were relatively easy to make, portable and efficient for hunting. During glacial retreats, food resources were scarce, and microblade technology was suitable for longer term mobility, rapid hunting, and easily re-made if tools were lost or broken. Scrapers have also been found, which were used for hide tanning and woodworking. Also, a cache pit was exposed which was lined with birch bark and presumed to have stored fish, berries, or root plants.

The Cultural Heritage Department is also working on an Ancestral Names project.

Place names are an important part of Skwlāx heritage, renewing a direct physical connection to the land and reflecting ancestral teachings. Such names are links to the distant past in specific places, to the resources of an area, and local waters. The importance of designating and retaining Indigenous place names is outlined in the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

extended financial subsidies to SteS youth wishing to pursue sports, culture, or educational goals, in order to encourage and assist their young people to achieve such ambitions. There is also an honorarium available to any band member who successfully graduates Grade XII, whether youth or adult.

Trespass Transgressions The spring season is traditionally when SteS members harvest edible mushrooms from their territory. This year has presented some challenges. Outsiders are entering reserve land and picking whatever mushrooms have sprouted. Incursions onto band property on Forest Service Road near Scotch Creek and near Lee Creek have recently been observed, including a tent encampment and sales to a commercial vendor. Such camping also presents a fire risk. Indigenous peoples have first right to gather edibles from their land, especially those that are a traditional food source. Non-Indigenous and nonband members found to be camping on or harvesting produce from SteS territory will be dealt with to the full extent of the law, which could include prosecution for trespassing.

It is strongly recommended to check with the band office regarding First Nations land boundaries prior to any activities.

Go Bysubmitted Bike June 3 - 9

The Chase Climate Action Society and CEAS are preparing for the Go By Bike campaign in Chase from Monday, June 3-9 for all members of the community to enjoy.

To register yourself or your team, go on-line to GoByBikeBC.ca, choose Chase as your community and then create an “Log My Ride” account. This will allow you to log all the kms you ride and will contribute to the total kms for Chase.

On Tues, June 4 at 8:30am, there will be a ribbon cutting event at the bus-loop between the 2 schools for all attendees.

CSS students, along with their teacher, and others will be able to do the VLA Loop (8kms). Haldane students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian to participate in a short designated route.

Riders should bring a helmet, water bottle, lots of smiles and plenty of enthusiasm for the fun week of riding ahead!

Go by Bike BC is encouraging all residents of BC and of course Chase (from toddlers to retirees) to experience the joy of cycling and to ride their bikes as much as possible

What is your favourite plant?

Sooo many to choose from thats a tough one! Lilacs would be up there.

Tell us about gratitude month and what it means to you.

Gratitude month for me is about carrying on in memory of Jory Yeung, who sadly lost his battle with cancer at the age of ten.

His favourite colour was lime green and so the family with help from friends had many shirts, star stickers, hats, sweaters bumper stickers made with the quote; “Its all in the Attitude Think Gratitude”.

The proceeds went to the Ronald Macdonald House.

Every Friday in the month of May people in town would don their green shirts. And most of the businesses in Chase had the Gratitude stickers on the windows and the workers wore their shirts.

Some still do but its been many years since starting and you don’t see it as much. I still wear my shirt. I’d love to see it started up again! I post daily gratitudes on Facebook every May along with a few others who are close to the family. It’s a great reminder of how lucky we are and how many things we have to be Grateful for.

What are 5 things you’re grateful for.

My family (pets) friends, my home, good health, community What’s your favourite dish to make?

I enjoy making a good lasagna.

What’s the best thing about living in Chase?

The best thing about living in Chase is having wonderful trails, the lake, the river, the back roads that take you to more beautiful areas.

The friendly people and small Community.

What do you do to relax?

Reading my book and having a coffee or sitting outside.

Describe yourself in three words.

Friendly, outgoing, caring Where are you from and how long have you been in Chase? Grew up in Vancouver, moved to Pritchard in 1990 with my son who was just an infant. Then to Sorrento for short stint. Chase for 29 years.

What summer activity are you looking forward to.

Looking forward to some mountain biking adventures, camping, a couple of weddings and visiting my brother who is coming out from New Brunswick!
