Downtown Revitalization Strategy Hayley Inglis of Urban Systems provided an overview of the Downtown Revitalization Strategy that was funded through a grant from the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior. Council Meeting Highlights

Coniferous Vegetative Material Curbside Pickup Pilot - Council passed a resolution to provide by way of a contractor a curbside pickup of combustible vegetative materials primarily for residents who do not have the ability to transport such materials to the landfill at a cost not to exceed $12,000.

The Shuswap Broadband Project – Cooperative Membership - Council passed a resolution to participate as a member in the Shuswap Broadband Project Co-operative to work as a group with other local area communities to advocate for better internet services.

Unsightly Property – 1045 Hillside Avenue - Council heard from the property owner and was informed that she does not have the means to transport garbage and other materials to the landfill. Council passed a resolution to issue a Demand Notice to the property owner, giving her 21 days to bring her property into compliance with the Village’s Property Maintenance Bylaw.

Climate Action Committee – SenseNet Fire Sensing Technology - Council passed a resolution that the Village of Chase approach the three local Indigenous community leaders as well as the provider of cellular service in the area to discuss collaborative funding for the installation of SenseNet Rapid Wildfire Detection equipment on Scatchard Mountain South of the Village of Chase.

2023 Statement of Financial Information Council passed a resolution to approve the 2023 Statement of Financial Information.

Visitor Information Centre Services Agreement - Council ratified the 2024 Fee for Service Agreement between the Village of Chase and the Chase and District Chamber of Commerce to provide Visitor Information Services on behalf of the Village of Chase.

Climate Action Committee – West Coast Climate Action Network - A resolution was passed to approve the Climate Action Committee’s request to join the West Coast Climate Action Network.

Letter to BC Municipalities from City of Kamloops regarding Higher Level Government Policy Changes putting pressures (financial and resource) on to

Local Governments - Council received the information and directed staff to draft a resolution to be sent to UBCM voicing the Village’s concerns about continual downloading without enough resources to manage the new responsibilities.

Grant-In-Aid Request – Skwlax Commemoration of Wildfire Event - A resolution was passed to donate $2400 to the Skwlax One Year Commemoration of Wildfire Event occurring on August 18, 2024. Councillor Connett was opposed.

During the Opportunity for Public to speak on Municipal Matters, Adria Mathisen of 28 Beach Crescent suggested that the Village not water the parks so frequently to save water and to set an example for the community when it comes to water conservation.

New Coach has Big Plans for Heat submitted by Chase Heat

Hard working, dynamic and relentless.

Thats what kind of team new Chase Heat Head Coach and GM, Kyle Evans promised the Heat fans in his first interview. Evans has hit the ground running, contacting all the Heat players from last season, as well as recruiting players from as far away as Ontario and some of his former players in the VIJHL Speaking for the first time on the Chase Heat Waves podcast last week, the new Coach introduced himself to the community. Evans is originally from Caledonia Ontario where he got his coaching start, with stops in Northern Ontario and Cowichan Valley of the BC Hockey League.

His most recent experience was as Head Coach of the Campbell River Storm of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League where his team won the regular season League championship. Like the KIJHL, the “VI” was also recently promoted to Tier 2 Junior A, so Evans has experience dealing with the growth issues that all KI teams are currently experiencing.

The new Coach is an avid outdoors enthusiast, with hiking, fishing and golfing topping his list of off season pursuits. Evans is thrilled to be in Chase and the Shuswap, surrounded by rivers, lakes and outdoor activities. He’s looking forward to meeting all the Heat fans and existing volunteers, as well as increasing community involvement and welcoming more fans to the Art Holding Memorial Arena.

Evans promises a reinvigorated relationship with the Chase community stating that its critical for the players and staff to be involved with not only Chase Minor Hockey, but the greater Chase community at large. Whether its reading in schools,

donating time at community events or reaching out to seniors , the Heat will have a larger presence in the area. The Chase Heat are “our team” and something that the community can truly call its own.

Heat Main Camp is coming up on the August 9th weekend and upwards of 60 players (or more) are expected to attend.

This is a significant increase over past years and this signifies some intense battles for roster positions on the Club. Evans promised a clean slate for returning players and most, if not all, have accepted the challenge to “step it up” in conversations with the Coach.

The Heat reminds the community that they will really need them to step up as volunteers, fans and especially billet families, especially if they are to fill the rosters with players from a long distance away. If the team is to be successful, and a franchise and program that players from all over will want to gravitate to, it will need to be a complete community effort, especially considering Chase is one of the smallest markets in Junior A hockey in Western Canada.

With an opportunity to roster up to 7 20 year old players next season, the Heat and the KI are ready to take the next step in the transition to “true” Junior A hockey. The level of play will be higher and the new Coach and returning coaching staff all promise that next seasons Heat Hockey will be competitive, hard working and a team that the entire community can support and be proud of.
