First of all, I would like to say ‘Congratulations’ to all the winners of the 35th Annual Chandler Chamber Community Awards. It is an honor to bring together so many deserving individuals, groups and businesses. Our celebration will be taking place on Thursday, June 2nd at Gila River Resorts & Casinos, Wild Horse Pass. Keep in mind that our How We Stand Policy Round Tables are taking place this month and those meetings will determine the core of our How We Stand Legislative document that goes to our elected officials. Register for the meetings on our website calendar. June is bringing exciting event opportunities for all members alike. We will be providing a recap of the 2022 55th legislative session at the June 10th Policy Impact Series. Come learn about the bulls the Chamber has advocated for and what has been passed into law. This month’s Women in Leadership event will feature the 2022 City Lifestyle Magazine’s Men of Chandler. Come join us as we honor these individuals that have made a positive impact in our community. Summer puts a strain on our businesses so make sure you use the resources available to you from the Chamber to help get your word out. Attend the mixers this month and collect referrals. If you are having summer specials, be sure to forward them along to the

y their nature, leaders are resourceful, creative, persistent, and resilient. Here in Chandler, those leadership characteristics are demonstrated by the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, the city of Chandler, our nonprofits, and businesses large and small. The Chandler Chamber is honored to recognize many businesses, individuals, and volunteers that help shape our community at the 35th Annual Community Awards event. This prestigious community award dinner is the Chandler Chamber’s largest and most colorful general membership event of the year. June has much in store and we encourage you to participate in the upcoming
How We Stand business roundtables. All Chandler Chamber business members are invited to attend a series of roundtable meetings to provide feedback and input on the development of the Chamber’s How We Stand Legislative document. This book outlines the 2023 policy priorities on behalf of and advocating for our business members. June kicks off our summer months, so be sure to stay cool and informed by participating in the various Chamber programs and events. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Chandler Chamber staff, as they are always there to support and guide our member businesses..
CHAMBER NON-PROFITSPOTLIGHT Creating Environment of Hope and Opportunity The mission of the Chandler Men of Action is to create an environment of hope and opportunity for AfricanAmerican youth. The hope is to develop positive self-esteem and clarify their values on which to build a successful life. Recognizing these strengths will help these young men into the ‘Right of Passage” of becoming strong influential Africana-American Men: as to build upon strong traditions to increase knowledge, pride, spirit, and character. 4
Chandler Chamber CONNECT | June 2022
FROM THE MAYOR Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke
We’ve spent the past eight months working on a budget with staff and hearing from residents and businesses to understand the needs of our community. Our fiscal approach continues to be
a proactive one, with a focus on smart planning for the future. I am confident that the Fiscal Year 2022-23 budget is a smart one. It marks the seventh consecutive year of reducing property tax rates, funds new and aging infrastructure and addresses public safety and quality of life needs. It significantly pays down the unfunded Public Safety Personnel Retirement System liability and adopts utility rates that are the lowest among Valley cities. These factors help Chandler retain and attract great businesses, while providing for the safety of our neighborhoods.
I am very proud that Chandler is structurally balanced and one of about forty communities nationally with AAA General Obligation bond ratings from all three bond rating agencies. We’re prepared for the unexpected by maintaining strong reserves and positioned to support economic growth. Fiscal responsibility and a great plan for the future make Chandler a stable force for the business community while ensuring an excellent quality of life for residents. For more information on the budget, please visit chandleraz. gov/budget.

Born in Kankakee, IL, Duane migrated from Chicago in 1998 and has never looked back. A father of three, he chose Chandler to settle down and raise his family because of its culture, schools and community. Since moving to Arizona, more than half of his family has relocated to the valley!
“...he chose Chandler to settle down and raise his family because of its culture, schools and community.” He joins the Chamber with more than 25 year experience in the banking and finance industry. His experience consist of managing corporate companies such as Chase Bank, Target Financial Services and Freedom Financial. I enjoy spending time with my amazing girlfriend, my friends, and my one-yearold kitten, Bowie. I’m excited to join the team and to take a bigger role in the community!
Sebastian Aleman is a second generation Hispanic currently in my sophomore year at Arizona States University. I am a dual major in Public Service and Public Policy, as well as, Economics at Arizona State University with the hopes of attending graduate school for a Master’s in Public Policy. MEMBERNEWS Eight years of milestones to celebrate
This month, The Translation Team celebrates eight years of working hand-in-hand with our awesome clients—including those we’ve served since the beginning. So we’re taking a pause from the day-to-day work to reflect on this milestone, and genuinely thank you for your business and your trust. Our translation agency was born out of the desire to truly specialize in Spanish for the U.S., working across time zones and as an extension of our clients’ internal organizations. And that’s exactly what our clients see from us every day. It’s amazing to think back on how we started with just one translator and one editor! Today, we are a core team of eight, including project managers, linguistic reviewers and a terminologist, and we work closely with a very talented pool of 40+ translators. Proud to be a certified Woman and Minority Owned Business.
Gov. Doug Ducey approves specialty license plate, proceeds from plate to benefit nonprofit By Katelyn Reinhart

State Forty Eight, a company that sells Arizona and community themed merchandise, will have its own specialized license plate after approval from Governor Doug Ducey, according to a news release from the governor’s office. Proceeds from the specialty license plate will go towards the State Forty Eight Foundation, which aims to support entrepreneurs and nonprofits. Bill HB2271 which supports community impact special plates was proposed earlier this year and signed into law on April 13, according to the release. A date has not been announced for the specialty license plate’s release, which is currently undergoing the design process.
“We’ve dreamed of a State Forty Eight license plate for a long time...” The license plate will sell through the Arizona Department of Transportation for $25, $17 of which will go towards the State Forty Eight Foundation. “I am so proud of our organization,” State Forty Eight CEO Michael Spangenberg, said in the release. “We’ve dreamed of a State Forty Eight license plate for a long time, and not only did we accomplish that that but we get to help other people pursue their passion because of it.”

JUNE
TEENTH
A Celebration of Freedom DR. CINDY BANTON
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared “that all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free.” Juneteenth honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The name “Juneteenth” is a blend of two words: “June” and “nineteenth.” It’s believed to be the oldest AfricanAmerican holiday, with annual celebrations on June 19th in different parts of the country dating back to 1866. Moreover, it is also a celebration of AfricanAmerican culture. The state of Texas was one of the last holdouts of the south to free slaves. It wasn’t until two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed that slaves were informed they were free. Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and announced, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves the absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.” With General Granger’s announcement, June 20

19th became known as Juneteenth. This year marks a major milestone for the celebration of Juneteenth. President Biden signed a bill into law that officially designates Juneteenth as an American holiday to be observed annually on June 19th. Juneteenth celebrations include activities such as church services, public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, rodeos, food, dancing, storytelling, and fellowship.
JUNETEENTH EVENTS
We invite you to join us for a series of weekend events bringing awareness to and celebrating Juneteenth! June 19th is recognized as a U.S. federal holiday and titled Juneteenth National Independence Day. Blending the words June and nineteenth, this date commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States.
