The Cave Newspaper FEATURED STORY ELECTIONS AHEAD

Arguably one of the most anticipated seasons here at the Cave Hill Campus, the Annual General Elections of the Guild of Students is set for March 14th 2023. Dubbed “Casting Cave Hill 23” this season will be the first election since 2020 to be conducted in a face-to-face/physical format. This means that the students can now look forward to interacting with candidates around the campus as they make it through the campaign period. Sample polling, as seen in the past, will also be done this season as well as categorized debate nights. Currently, there are 20 candidates vying for guild councilor positions this election season, however a few positions still remain uncontested due to persons not putting themselves up for service. The guild returning officer would have previously expressed his wishes of having all positions contested, so that the newly elected councilors would begin their tenure with a full council to operate with.

ELECTIONS AT CAVE HILL

Voting, which the returning officer reassured everyone would be done physically, will take place at set polling stations across the campus as was done in the past. The use of electronic machines for the submission and counting of ballots was also confirmed by the returning officer, and a public demonstration of such will be conducted at an earlier date in the season. During the countdown days before the end of the nomination period, the electoral committee would have also taken to social media

to release some councilor testimonial videos which was intended to encourage persons to put themselves up for service. Students are still advised to go ahead and watch these videos as it may provide some clarity on a few of the roles. Overall, the guild council encourages students to look out for appointments as well as the necessary by-elections which will inevitably postdate the election season. To the candidates, good luck, and to the rest of the student body, remember, “No Vote, No Voice.”

Tip #2: Participate in sample polls. Not only will this help you feel familiar with the process on election day, but it also helps the candidates gauge their reach to the student body. Consider it their campaign feedback.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

In January 2023, Jasmine Greene applied for and won the Firehood Angels’ first international pitch competition for women in tech entrepreneurs and has earned 25K for the development of PCSG. Private Caribbean Study Goals (PCSG) is the first student-led online teaching platform in the world. It cater to secondary school students (3rd Form, O-Level & A-Level) across the Caribbean. PCSG has impacted the lives of 5300+ students in 20+ Caribbean countries since its establishment in March 2020 due to COVID-19. PCSG's motto is our mission: "Students Helping Students Succeed" and is partnered with the United Nation's 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) - Quality Education. Jasmine founded Private Caribbean Study Goals (PCSG) at the age of 16 in March 2020 due to the closure of her former secondary school – The Combermere School – as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Alike her were several other academically deprived, demotivated students across the Caribbean. Tackling the United Nation's 4th Sustainable Development Goal - Quality Education - Caribbean secondary school students expressed to her the lack of and need for affordable, quality online education that is personalised to their academic needs and wants. Thus, she organized and established PCSG to provide affordable (currently free), high-quality online education.

GUILD IS NOW DEBT FREE

At the Annual General Meeting of the Guild of Students, the Guild Treasurer Nicholi John presented the financial report where numerous outstanding payments were made on behalf of previous guild councils. Considering the council started the tenure in debt, this is highlighted as a major achievement.

New Vending Machine

The Guild Union, where students frequent on a daily basis, now has a new vending machine for snacks! With this new addition quickly becoming very popular over the past week, we would like to recognize and thank the Faculty of Sport Representative Mickel Besson for making this happen.

IN RECENT WEEKS NEWS IN SHORT

Nationality: Antiguan Area of Study: Sport Sciences

Graduating Class: 2024

Roles and Responsibilities (Summarized): My job is to ensure that Guild Union building is kept in adequate condition. I also oversee the day to day runnings of the bar and deal with the booking of spaces or room allocation within the building. Another responsibility attached to my portfolio is to keep records of the Guild’s assets and inventory.

Why did you choose your council position: I chose this position because I wanted to be able to help bring some life back to the campus. The bar is directly attached to this portfolio so I felt that I’d be able “bring de vybz”.

Favorite Experience during your tenure so far: Being able to interact with different types of students everyday at the bar has been the highlight of my tenure. My personality allows me to be someone easy to talk to and that essentially can make someone’s day just a little better.

Favorite Past Time/Hobbies: Watching Netflix, Party Entertainment (Dj or MC), Dancing, playing steel pan and driving and operating heavy duty machinery.

Favorite Food and Drink: Baked Chicken, Macaroni Pie and Rice & Peas with a tall glass of homemade Fruit Punch.

Favorite Song/Movie/Book: Avengers: Infinity War

Favorite Quote: “Your mind cannot occupy a positive and negative thought at the same time. Simply pump positive thoughts into your mind and you’ll see the difference in your everyday life.”

Spirit Animal/Object: Lion - The lion spirit represents heart and courage; a born leader with a deep sense of passion and righteousness. That’s me, Paul Jacob Miller.

If I ruled the world, I would...: I would make changes to development of sport for youth especially the Caribbean. The bridge between youth professionalism and senior professionalism in sports is huge gap that needs to be closed.

Biggest life lesson: Persons may act like they have your best interests at heart but that is seemingly not the case. Don’t doubt or second guess yourself and be proud of the decisions or course of actions you decide to take with regards to your life.

Advice to future Guild Councilors: Have the ability to build personal relationships and professional relationships separately.
