The Catenians

Life with “The Catenians” In the past two issues, I have attempted to give you some insights into the rationale behind my own decision to be a member of the Catenian Association. If I were asked to state which is the most important reason, I think I would turn to the principles upon which our Association is founded, those being Faith and Family, with a good dose of Fun and enjoyment thrown into the mix.

There can be little doubt that recent events in our lives , and those of our friends and family, have had a profound impression on how we see our neighbours and fellow human beings.

Terror attacks in London, Manchester, Nice and Barcelona have forced us to look more closely at how we live our lives together in the 21st century. Terrible tragedies such as the Grenfell fire have made us realise that life is precious and, at the same time, quite fragile.

Within our Faith Community, documentation from the Bishop of Salford shows a Church in decline, as other means of worship and other faiths have come to the fore.

However , not all is gloom and doom.

Our gallery of photographs is evidence of a group of committed men and women who are determined to enjoy life under the umbrella of the Catenian Association. In November this year, we will be giving a grant to one of our young people to help her to travel to South Africa to carry out Charitable work, a grant which echoes similar support given this year to young people going to Peru, to Ghana and to other parts of the world to bring support to those in most need.

In December, we will be hosting our Xmas events, with an evening of Choral activities and Pantomime at Mytton Fold.

In November, we will be celebrating Mass to remember the deceased members of our Association and, in the case of

Blackburn with Ribble Valley Circle, some of our Brothers lost their lives in The Great War of 1914-18, and the second World War of 1939-45.

We also intend to travel to Manchester for the famous Xmas market in the next few months.

Our gallery shows some of our Brothers with their Wives and our Widows on our annual trip to Lytham where, after a relatively easy walk, we dined at a local Fish’n’chip restaurant.

Also , you can see one of our Ladies displaying the skills of her German Shepherd dog at the recent Lancashire Show.

The Catenian Association has a great deal to offer to those Catholic men, and their wives and partners, who wish to make a more visible contribution to our living faith in the 21st Century. Many of us already play a significant role in our Faith Community as Lay Readers, as Eucharistic Ministers, as members of Parish bodies supporting our Parish priests, roles which our Bishop has asked us to increase as we leave the Spiritual welfare of our Catholic congregation to our dwindling number of Priests and take on the more administrative tasks of Parish life.

At one point in history, there was a famous picture of General Kitchener proclaiming that ‘Your Country Needs You’ Your Church needs your support in these increasingly troubled times. Your young people need your support and guidance. Our older friends and neighbours need to be cared for by a group of committed Catholic people .

Our Special Day at the Royal Lancashire show Shaun Raywood our dog trainer has been training dogs for over 40yrs. He has trained with the Lancashire police for 25yrs, he also sought, trained and supplied dogs for the Malawi police dog section, he supplied the Harnesses, dog leads, collars, food and water dishes including the dimensions of the dog kennels.

Shaun has worked for what was called the C E G B the Central Electric Generating Board being Senior instructor and a dog handler for the Power stations in this country, he has competed in police dog trails at Manchester and Poynton, also Shaun and his dogs have done TV work on Coronation street and the program Bulman the London city detective.

The training school is in Tockholes where Shaun his wife Susan and Family have lived for 32 yrs and where Susan has took an active part in all aspects of the training.

The dog display team who took part in the show are all civilians and have trained with their dogs for many weeks to a very high standard.

The team consisted of a of minimum of 10 people with a mixture of dog breeds from German Shepherd’s, Labradors, Collies, Rottweiler’s and a springer spaniel.

All the team took part in Agility, Obedience and the more experienced dogs took part doing protection work this is where the dog has to be capable of running after a person and not to touch them if they are stood still, the dog has to show courage against the gun, knife, stick and to protect the handler, the dog has also to be capable of tracking a human scent up to 2 hours old.

All the team worked very hard and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the 3 day show especially being piped in by the Accrington pipe band on the last day.

It’s The Gin

I Think that I may be getting fatter no longer am I slim For I like to eat sweet things and drink a lot of gin I like to eat sausage rolls, nuts and of course all the pies.

Alas a moment on the lips is now an inch on my thighs.

I am told to cut down on everything and take more exercise.

But when its comes to exercise I prefer to eat those pies.

I’ve tried the five two diet and weight watchers as well, But when it came to sticking to it that’s another story to tell.

They say that I should only eat five hundred calories a day.

I wont be giving up the pies or Gin is all I have to say I am now giving up all those diets that’s the end of that.

I’ve decided to remain as I am that is happy but quite fat.

Gin

I must admit that I have found a new vice but it’s no sin.

Like many other folk I’ve discovered a taste for Gin. Once there was a choice of probably only one or two, Now there is so many to choose I don’t know what to do.

I never thought that I would change from drinking beer but all I ever want to drink now is the gin I fear!

Now there are so many Gins to choose from these days I can go to the bar and drink Gin a hundred different ways.

It seems someone is now distilling gin all over the place.

I am beginning to think one day there will be a still in space.

I don’t care to think how long this fashion will last for gin.

But if I don’t try at least another sixty it will such a sin.

The Pub There is a place where i like to spend some of my time.

It’s a place to meet drink beer, chat and have a whine.

If you are feeling down at heel, and you’re are in a rut.

You can get a bag of crisps, and a packet of salted nut.

You meet all sorts of folks as they have a drink, Get a pint, have a chat, hear those glasses chink.

You will be surprised that time goes flying by, Whilst sat in the pub with a pint, and maybe a pie.

Now if you think that’s to very boring and tame, Bring you darts. Stand to the ockey, have a game.

Autumn Treacle tart Serves 6 Pastry Ingredients:110g ( 4ozs) Plain flour 55g ( 2ozs) butter 1 and a half tsp. caster sugar 1 egg yolk a pinch of salt For the filling;175g ( 6ozs) golden syrup Finely grated zest of 1 lemon and 2 tsp. juice 30g ( 1oz ) fresh white breadcrumbs

Rub the flour and butter together until finely crumbed.

Add the sugar and pinch of salt. Then the egg yolk along with two tablespoons of cold water. When formed into a ball, squash flat, wrap in clingfilm and chill for 10 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 190 degrees C / gas mark 5.

Roll out the pastry into a circle, about quarter of an inch thick. Lay and trim any excess on an 8inch ovenproof tin plate. Reserve the trimmings for later to decorate the top.

To make the filling, warm the syrup and spoon a little onto the pastry.

Mix the rest with the lemon and breadcrumbs.

Decorate with pastry trimmings and bake for 30 minutes.

Serve warm with whipped cream.

Those were the days...

It is now 6.10 am on Saturday morning and for some unknown reason I am listening to the ‘Sounds of the Sixties’ on Radio 2, hosted by Tony Blackburn.

To my amazement, he has just told me that ‘Arnold’ , his dog, is 54 years old. But, more importantly, he has made several references to music played on ‘Radio Caroline ‘ in the early ‘Sixties’. I wonder how many of us can remember closeting ourselves away , with our ‘Bush’ or ‘Alba’ or ‘Grundig’ radios to listen in secret to this ‘Satanic’ -God Bless Mary Whitehouse- music emanating from some ship in the English Channel. A prize to anyone who can remember the first record played on Radio One! Sometimes events occur which take you back to ‘The Good Old Days’’ Just a few weeks ago, to celebrate my birthday, my wife and I went on a weekend break to a hotel in Wales which was to feature a ‘Beatles Tribute’ band.

And very enjoyable it was!

However, on Saturday evening, we were regally entertained by a comedian, a somewhat older, more experienced type of character, who made several references to that remarkable show of ‘The Comedians’ which featured on Granada Television many years ago. I remember, as a young teacher in Liverpool, going on a staff night out to the ‘Wooky Hollow’ club, to be entertained by the great George Roper, who simply propped himself up with the microphone and told stories . Our sides ached for hours afterwards and , remarkably, not an expletive or four letter rant in hearing. Another great comedian was Charlie Williams, a Bradford man with a Caribbean background (notice the politically correct description), who told the type of jokes which would now be considered racist.

When did we lose the ability to laugh at ourselves? As a man with strong Irish roots, am I no longer allowed to laugh at my own expense? Perhaps I can offer you an ‘acceptable joke’? ‘The milkman picked up a note left in a milk bottle. Please do not leave any milk today. Also do not leave any milk at number 14 as he

However I digress. On the Sunday of our break, my wife and I took a trip to Llandudno, simply because my better half, who is from Yorkshire , had never been before, and it must be at least forty years since I had spent a day there. And, believe it or not, we stepped into a time warp. The sun shone and Llandudno Promenade was full of families having an enjoyable day out. There was a group of enthusiasts doing line dancing to entertain passers-by, and on the beach was a group of donkeys ready to carry young children up and down the sands. I wonder how long the ‘Animal Rights Acivists’ will allow this to continue?

I am not sure if the Welsh language has a word for politically correct, but it seems to be duly ignored on the Pier at Llandudno. ‘Kiss- me-quick Hats’, delicious Cornish pasties, ice creams and Candy Floss were in plentiful supply. As we strolled along in warm sunshine, it was uplifting to see so many families enjoying the relatively simple things in life. At the end of the Pier, we strolled into a ‘Restaurant/Cafe’ which, to be honest, had probably seen better days. But somehow, it seemed to blend in with the overall ambiance of the day. If you could only guarantee the weather, why would you wish to leave these wonderful shores. For the majority of my youth, the family holidays were spent in Rhyl, at bed and Breakfast family accommodation. The first time I flew anywhere, I must have been over thirty years of age. Strange as it seems to me, my youngest grandson, Ciaran, was taken to Denver in the United States in April this year.

He is only one in October this year!

Life is ever changing and, sometimes, I wish I could step off this Carousel for a few moments and to quote the poet...

‘What is life if full of care We have no time to stand and stare..’

Trough of Bowland Start/Finish: Small car park on the summit of the Trough Road between Abbeystead and Dunsop Bridge.BB7 3BJ Factfile:

Distance 11 miles 18k. Time: 6 - 8 hours. Grade: Strenuous - nearly all of it! Map OS OL41 The Forest of Bowland The walk starts benignly enough with a downhill walk towards Dunsop Bridge.

At the bottom on the hill after the road levels out turn left onto a bridleway at Trough Barn. This quickly begins to climb on a broad track. After half a mile the track reaches open moorland to climb more steeply to a wall. After this the gradient eases as you cross the saddle of Whins Fell to arrive at a wooden gate in a fence. Through this and with a fine view of Brennand Dale below follow the track as it descends steeply towards Brennand Farm. This path is unusual in that it has a name - Ouster Rake. “Ouster” is the old English name for “Bloody steep track”.

Decency prevents me from giving the Anglo Saxon version.

The path is obvious all the way to the farm. Here after passing the farmhouse turn left on another bridleway which after going through a couple of gates crosses the Brennand River and then commences a steep climb towards Whitendale.

This takes you up to a col between below Middle Knoll. When you reach a wall junction close to a small tarn and before the bridleway descends into Whitendale - stop!

You’ll need to pause to contemplate the next and steepest climb of the day before you as you turn left. With the wall on your right commence ascent and at a rusty gate go through it and continue up the steeper slope without a path to assist you. As it levels out the wall disappears to be replaced by a fence. For the remaining part of the walk fences and walls will be an invaluable navigational handrail as you tramp across these wild remote moorlands. Follow the fence across a broad ridge which after prolonged spells of wet weather can be excessively boggy. After ¾ mile you reach a scattering of wind eroded rocks - Whitendale Hanging Stones which happen to be close to the geographical centre of Great Britain as determined by the Ordnance Survey.

You may want to spend a little time deciding which tuft of heather marks the actual centre - to the left of the fence. Grid reference SD64188 56541. After this interlude follow the fence up to the next feature - the scattering of rocks at White Crag presently the site of a seagull colony. ¼ mile after this meet a junction close to a wall. After passing through a wooden kissing gate follow the wall up to the trig point of Wolfhole Cag set in field of large boulders.

On a clear day you will be able to view much of the route back to the car park. If it looks a long way that’s because it is - over 4½ miles. Continue along the ridge with the wall to your right.

In just under ½ mile reach a fence and a stile over which you enter Clougha Access area. Unusually there is a sign post to help you here.

Turn left in the direction of Miller’s House and Tarnbrook. The first section of this walk is rather awkward

as you negotiate frequent bogs and peat hags but after crossing a stile the fence to the left is replaced by a wall and as you cross Brennand Great Hill the walking becomes easier underfoot - a welcome respite. You may wish to make a short detour to examine the Elephant Stone (not marked on the OS map) to the right of the route. Back on the path follow the wall down to Millers House. If there ever was a house here no trace can be seen now but you will be able to pick out the shape of mill stones that were made here in the distant past.

At Millers House there is another sign post but not helpful to you. Your way is ahead following the fence without the aid of a path to the summit of Whin Fell. ½ mile after Millers House you reach Brennand Tarn - an almost secret patch of water and little visited because of this.

With the aid of a gate to its left by pass it to resume the line of travel to the summit of the fell - most certainly easier written than done. At the summit there is a junction of paths. The trig point is a little further if you want to bag it but the way down is through the kissing gate and follow the fence to the right down to the Trough Road.
