BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS

It would be impossible to name all the books for adults and children that use Christmas as a setting, but here are some classic favourites to jog your memory.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

This is probably the most readable of Dickens’ works and a story that has been made familiar on the big screen. Who could forget the mastery of The Muppet Christmas Carol and how cleverly the muppets take on the characters. Michael Caine is superb amidst all of the nonsense, yet the original story still holds true. The book was first published on December 19th, 1843. Londoners thronged to hear Dickens read it in person and bought out the first printing in days. From Scrooge himself to Tiny Tim, it is a tale that still engages us many years later.

Twelve Days of Christmas by Jeanette Winterson

I received this hardback book as an early festive gift and read every story by the 25th of December. It is a wonderful read for the days before Christmas Day and the twelve festive recipes from Yuletides past and present are the icing on the Christmas cake. There’s red cabbage, turkey biryani, Dad’s sherry trifle (I would leave out the tinned fruit!), Mrs Winterson’s mince pies and more. Jeanette was brought up in Accrington in the 1960s and 70s and allows the reader a glimpse into her childhood.

Father Christmas by Raymond Briggs

Well-loved characters such as Peppa Pig, Bluey and Paddington Bear appear in stories set around Christmas time, but for me, Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas was the one I loved as a child. The illustrations make it a delightful read for any age and although the jolly red-faced man is portrayed as a grumpy, over-worked character, he is brought down to earth as he grapples with the problems everyone faces at Christmas.

Finally, many thanks to everyone who bought my book of short stories set in Lancashire, and especially to those of you who got in touch to say how much you had enjoyed the book.

‘Fire at the Cavendish Club’ certainly raised some memories, as did ‘All the Fun of the Fair’. The book, which would make an ideal gift this Christmas, is available through Amazon or by placing an order on the website: www.chaffinchbooks. co.uk

Have a lovely Christmas and take the chance to relax with a good book!

CHARLES Give Peace a Chance

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE...

Good morning, everyone from a cold and cloudy Penwortham. As 2024 draws inexorably to a close, we are drawn to thoughts of Christmas and its celebrations. It seems that the days of my childhood whereby after Church in the morning, we were allowed to open what could now be described as our meagre presents – usually a Chocolate Orange, a piece of fruit, a bag of mixed nuts and some kind of ‘major’ gift. Links with the meagre dinner of the Cratchit family and the pudding served were almost inevitable yet, like the Cratchits, ‘we are happy’, ‘grateful’ and ‘pleased’ with the dinner in front of us.

The long-established tradition of the ‘Queen’s Speech’ was to come later, and yet, somehow’, we seemed to be able to communicate our happiness to each other. It is arguable that such days are long gone, with children obsessed with technology, social media, and the like which has had a negative effect on the family. Perhaps, with new legislation, dependence on technology may be in decline. Christmas is a veritable Janus to all of us, a time to look back over the year and, with the advent of 2025, perhaps look forward to a New Year. There can be little doubt that 2024 was a veritable Tsunami of change. The Chinese say that if you want to be happy for a short time, get drunk; happy for a long time, fall in love; happy for ever, take up gardening. 2024 has witnessed such change that any one of the above may be appropriate.

On a personal level, I bought a new car. Sensible. Then my wife and I, both in our late seventies, decided to buy a dog. In true Murphy fashion, we bought TWO! Wonderful little Cockapoos! INSANE???? Trouble waiting to happen. I am now employed principally as a collector of Dog Waste! Serves you right as I hear you say, but seriously, a source of great joy.

On the other hand, change in Society has been extraordinary. In one year,

we have a new Government, a new Prime Minister, a new President of the United States, natural disasters in Spain and Iceland, and of course the human tragedy of war in the Ukraine, in Gaza, Lebanon, Israel, and the Sudan. When will we ever learn? The title of this article was never more important.

For many of our fellow human beings, life seems to continue relentlessly. My grandson moved into High School and others into further stages of Education. Phyllis Diller tells us that we should always be nice to our children because they are the ones who will choose our rest home –really?

In our neighbourhoods, the apparently relentless drive to build more housing continues unabated.

thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com

Surely the most meaningless term is ‘affordable’ housing. As the Prince of Wales is trying to bring about, perhaps we should give more consideration to homeless people.

The Ribble Valley is known as one of the most expensive areas in which to find a home. Good luck to those who have a home in this area.

But perhaps we should leave the real meaning of Christmas to others. Enjoy your Christmas and in the words of the song:

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!!

God bless,

Charles

Customer Reviews

Barbara Milne-Redhead 5*

“The family met Michael with a view to discussing a house clearance. Michael then followed this up by a visit to the property, promptly sending clear details of costs and allowances for us to consider. Michael arrived on the arranged day and almost everything was cleared within two days. To say we were pleased, was an understatement. A trustworthy business, right on our doorstep.”

Linda Charlton - 5*

“Professional and first class service. Came to view the items of furniture, sent me a price which I was happy with and a mutually agreeable collection date was arranged. The whole transaction was easy and smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their service and would most definitely use again myself.”

Clive Thompson - 5*

“We had an urgent house clearance to do and we cannot fault the full attention we received from Michael and Tim who made the whole experience almost pleasurable! Many thanks for making it possible.”

Man Bag

Life as a Bee

Peter Dewhurst (It’s Grim Upt North)

Peter Dewhurst (It’s Great Up North)

I need a Man Shed

I now own my fantastic Man Bag, I think it looks good but I’ll not brag.

Last night I pondered how life would be,

To live in the wonderful world as a bee?

What I need this bag carries all, It’s neither too big or is it too small. Although carrying everything I need,

I would pass my working hours, Collecting pollen from all the flowers.

Rooting In the Garage

It’s Raining again

Winter is Here

When please tell me when will end the winter wet and rain?

I can never find things with speed. For the bag seems to grow with time, It even holds three bottles of wine. The reason I like it, I will tell you why, Is that it can hold at least six pork pie.

To view all the flowers from my size so small, Then to visit them one and all.

I would buzz merrily from plants to hive,

How good it would feel to be so free and alive.

No longer working hours for money,

My Reward, to help produce honey.

The wonderful world I would like to see,

Life through the eyes of a buzzing bee.

Sat in the garden a thought popped into my head, The time has come now, “I need Man-Shed”. The garage is full with bits and bobs to keep, However, now all my things are in a big heap.

It was raining outside and I was feeling very bored, I started searching the garage where STUFF is stored, The first place that caught my attention was an old tin. So I tipped it onto the floor that I could see what was in.

I need a man shed, with a very comfy seat, For when I am indoors, I am always under the feet. My shed would have a big wood burning stove, And just for a laugh, it would be painted mauve.

There was rusty nails, and screws without a thread, an old paint scraper and a some spiders long dead. A collection of strings all tangled together, An old waterproof hat to keep out the weather.

I would sit in my shed for hours and hours, With a glass of Gin, Surrounded by flowers.

I found two twenty pound notes so to the pub I went. I became less bored as the money was spent.

If it lasts for many more days it will drive me totally insane.

Winter is with us now and it’s not much fun, I would like to go away for four months in the sun.

To walk around wearing shorts in Madeira or Spain, That would suit me until Spring came around again.

We always get the rain here in Lancashire in the Northwest, I have gone through two brollies and I’m not impressed.

I never in my life thought these words would come from my mouth, but if the rain doesn’t stop soon I may have to move down South.

Not to be out in the Winter when all is cold and grey, “Give me bright Sunshine” is all I have to say. Promenading on a nice boulevard with Ice Cream and Wine, Not returning until the Spring Sun shines would be fine!

Not to see the sunshine again for a month or so fills me with dread, Looking down at my feet now they are starting to become webbed.

I know it is because of the rain the Ribble Valley is so green and lush,

But to see more sunshine I would put up with a bit of brown at a push.

I wear my thermal vest and even a pair of long john, There will be no casting of them until winter has gone. Venturing out for more than a few minutes is not planned, Even wearing Wooly hat and Thermal gloves on hand.

Even though I am in Lancashire and maybe feeling wet and sometimes sad, if I moved down south to the sun, I’m sure that would drive me mad.

There will be a “Santa Dash” 10k run for the serious athletes and a fun-focussed “Turkey Tinsel Trot”, where fancy dress, prams and pets are encouraged. This will be a much shorter run, or walk, or toddle, of around 2k, with the emphasis very much on fun. Both runs will end in the centre of Longridge. Experience shows that families come to such events to support the runners and browse the town whist the race is being held.

BOXING DAY VEGETABLE SOUP

Rather than a recipe for Christmas Day, I have jotted a rather good soup that is quick to make and will use up all your left over veggies and provide a nutritious and satisfying bowl of delight. This soup is ideal to enjoy after a cold Boxing Day walk.

Serve with warm crusty rolls and will be enjoyed by all!

ALL YOU NEED IS:

1 litre of stock

Bowl of leftover cooked vegetables –roast potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts, parsnips and broccoli.

Tub of crème fraiche

A handful of fresh herbs, chopped finely and salt and pepper to taste.

TO MAKE:

Put the veg in a large saucepan, cover with the stock. Bring to the boil and then simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat, allow to cool and then blitz with a hand blender.

Season with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Spoon into bowls, add some crème fraiche, herbs and devour. Serve with the warmed crusty rolls. Delicious!

CLOSER TO NATURE

Biomimetic materials that literally mimic nature, are revolutionising dentistry and here in the Ribble Valley, one forward-thinking practice is one of the leading pioneers of this technique

Always keeping ahead of the industry, leading private dental practice Renovo is one of the first practices in the UK that has fully adapted the very latest techniques that can successfully restore teeth by using materials that mimic nature and the natural tooth. Biomimetic dentistry is revolutionising the way dentists can restore and repair teeth as

Dr Usman Riaz of Ribble Valley-based Renovo explains: “This is micro-invasive dentistry. We can preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible metal-free materials that act, feel and look just like our natural teeth.”

AVOIDING ROOT CANALS

“Biomimetic dentistry can help reduce your need for root canal therapy by up to 90 per cent. With immediate dentin sealing and resin coating, biomimetic dentistry gives pulps a vital chance to heal, helping maintain their natural resilience and extend their life. This is at the forefront of our core values,” adds Dr Riaz.

These latest advances in dental technology are set to change the way we view restorative dentistry. For teeth that have been damaged, porcelain crowns and veneers have, in the past, been the solution. However, more recent developments in bonding technology and the bio-materials used, have given dentists a new alternative, usually with no tooth removal.

PREDICTABLE OUTCOMES AND PAIN-FREE LONGERLASTING TEETH

Biomimetic restorations treat the causes of symptoms (cracks or caries near the pulp) so they do not result in sensitivity or pain after restoration: “Biomimetic techniques also restore the tooth in a way that mimics a tooth’s natural structure, preventing cracks around the restoration. Finally, the advanced adhesive techniques used in a biomimetic restoration have been shown to keep a restoration bonded for over 20 years, and counting, so the days of crowns or fillings falling out can be a thing of the past!”

These restorative materials that mimic nature, are not only perfect for aesthetically restoring teeth but they also help preserve and strengthen the natural tooth structure.

SCIENCE-BACKED DENTAL TREATMENT

Biomimetic dentistry is more technique sensitive and requires more detailed steps than traditional restorative practices. With Renovo’s approach, the dentists and the whole clinical team understand the science, or what we call the ‘why’ behind each step in their biomimetic restoration. The systematic steps

take the guesswork out of treatment planning, leaving clinicians and patients feeling confident in every restoration.

IMPROVED AESTHETICS

“Biomimetic dentistry is general dentistry and can be applied to every case we see at Renovo. The concepts of conserving tooth structure, saving pulps and superior adhesion will serve as a more predictable foundation of our work,” explains Dr Riaz.

“We can change, reshape and enhance teeth with these new materials. The biomimetic materials are also reinforcing teeth – it is a totally different concept to what we have seen previously.”

Adopting the latest biomimetic philosophies and having all the specialist techniques and materials available to them, the dentists at Renovo are pioneering in

their unique approach.

“Specialist techniques are used in biomimetic dentistry and the whole team have had advanced training,” says Dr Riaz. “For us, using non-invasive techniques and preserving teeth has always been something

WE GET OPTIMAL RESULTS WITH ZERO TOOTH REMOVAL AND THAT’S WHY THE BIOMIMETIC APPROACH IS SO POPULAR

we routinely believe in and practice, so biomimetic dentistry sits really well with that belief.

“It’s the way dentistry should be done –to save and conserve teeth has always been our gold standard.”

ZERO TOOTH LOSS MAXIMUM AESTHETICS

For nervous patients the biomimetic approach revolutionises the way they view a dental appointment: “For those people, this is an amazing development as the approach is to conserve tooth tissue using minimally invasive techniques. No anaesthetic is needed as there is zero tooth removal.”

While biomimetic dentistry can help to naturally strengthen and restore damaged teeth, it is also perfect for cosmetic procedures: “From a cosmetic point of view we can improve without having to compromise, which is a very powerful concept.

“With the latest biomimetic materials, we get incredible results and in many cases, it is much quicker too, as it often involves just one visit to the dentist.

“These treatment concepts and philosophy are popular in the US and Europe, but it has taken time to develop in the UK. We have had to understand the materials and perfect new techniques so we can carry out dentistry at a different level.”

HEALTHIER TEETH HEALTHIER YOU

By removing all toxicity and inflammation from the mouth, biological dentistry helps restore vitality, balance and systemic health.

“What we put in our mouth and more importantly, the teeth themselves, has a crucial role to play in our overall health. Gut health begins in the mouth. It’s more than just a gateway – it’s a mirror reflecting our overall health.” n

THE CLOCK by Maura

As another day begins to dawn

A piercing sound I hear

It is the clock beside my bed

That screams at me so near

And as I place my hand upon it

To block its constant cry

The noise is stopped at once – hooray!

So I lay down and sigh

POETRY CORNER

But as I snuggle deep within

The comfort of my bed

The motion of the clock I hear

‘Get up, you’re not yet dead’

Tick tock, tick tock

The rhythm of the clock

As the time of day is racing by I shout out loud ‘please stop’

But the clock it does not listen

It covers up its ears

So once again I raise my voice

‘Be quiet, I’m sleeping here’

Then the clock becomes defiant

As time is on its side

And as its hands turn round and round

I slide down the bed to hide

But even in the darkness

Trapped and all alone

The calling of the clock surrounds me

In the bedroom of my home

And so we start to argue

As it tries to get its way

‘Get out of bed you lazy thing

Get dressed and start your day’

This clock it does annoy me

But what is it I can do?

Then suddenly a thought pops up

I’ll drop it down the loo!

Then its petty voice can’t wake me

In the early morning light

And work will be a distant dream

As I roll over and say ‘goodnight’!

Garden Work

Rare day of freedom, nought to do, I wish to work outdoors.

Prepare the garden space for spring, Begin the winter chores.

But drift outside, and brace the chill, A damp and dreary morn.

Rain patters down the window pane, And littered leaves adorn.

The air is dull, the grass a bog,

THE BROKEN SOUL by Maura

They thought that I was down and out

They thought that I was done

The more they kept me on the ground

The more I looked towards that sun

And as those rays of light shone down

To warm my aging face

I found my shoulders rise once more

As I stood in humble grace

No tears, no regrets, no shattered life

Will destroy my battered soul

Instead I’ll fight and pursue each dream

As I move towards my goal

The ridicule, the words of harm

The insults and the pain

Endured by a man whose defiant spirit

Fights back to erase his shame

When a man is lost and feels all alone

He must look within himself

And rid his thoughts of any doubt

That his life is blessed with wealth

No gold, no silver to weigh him down

Only pennies small and few

But in his heart he carries the belief

That his life can be renewed

Blows and strikes may knock you over

In a life that’s tough and hard

But a winner will find inside his mind

The strength to rebuild his guard

So look towards that sun my lad

When your battles near their end

And remember this as you rise again

That a broken soul can mend

Each breath is hard to catch. A taste of mould, of wilt, of rot, Deluge the veggie patch.

Mum’s words reverb upon the ear, “You’ll catch your death in that. Wrap up, keep warm, or stay indoors, At least put on a hat.”

So I put off the garden work, To spare my health from fate, It will be left another day, By then I’ll be too late.

WHERE AM I? by Maura

I look into the mirror

But what is it that I see?

The person that I once did know

No longer looks at me

Where are you I now ask of them?

You’ve left me all alone

The face that I once recognised

Now lost within my bones

For somewhere they are lurking

Behind that sad façade

Not willing to reveal themselves

To a face that’s now turned hard

The look that I once had when young

No longer in my sights

For the life that I have lived so far

Diminished all its light

The greying of my golden locks

The weakness in my eyes

The drooping of my muscles

Sagging flesh now gently lies

The wrinkles and the furrows

Shadows growing over time

The aging of a face I loved

Now showing all the signs

But there is nothing I can do to stop

The onslaught of this sin

My looks have changed forever

And so have I within

Evening

Oh but how the evening grows, Comes too soon with autumn's throws, Fades to night before we tire, Chills to warm with crackling fire.

Wrapped up snug in TV's glow, Knitting prepped and on the go, Chocolate snacked for supper treat, Blankets rolled around cold feet.

Slowly eyes begin to drift, Tempted by the dreamland rift, Lights turned out and curtains drawn, Off to sleep away 'til dawn.

Years of experience, professionalism and competitive prices are the reasons why Broughton Roofing have developed into a trusted, reliable company across Lancashire.

From leaking flat roof repairs, pitch roof repairs to total replacement or just advice on which roof or guttering, Jamie and Kyle are happy to help.

Broughton Roofing was founded by Jamie who started learning his trade when he left school, working under his fathers guidance. Kyle started out as an apprentice for Jamie and is now a partner in the business.

"We specialise in covering flat roofs with synthetic rubber from

tyre giants Firestone. There are no joints to cause leaks as it is sold in single sheets big enough for most roofs. Firestone RubberCover has a 20-year material warranty but can last up to 50 years.

“If holed, it is easily repaired and needs little or no maintenance." says Kyle.

Jamie says: “As well as flat roofing installations and flat roof repairs we also supply and fit UPVC guttering, fascias and soffits, roof lights and lead work plus Velux window installation.

“We fit in around our customers’ lives. If you cannot see us until the evening, we will see you then.

“Nothing is too much trouble for us and if you need a job promptly, we are prepared to work seven days a week to deliver it on time.”
