The Thief
By Jacqueline Wood, Langho
SHORT STORY IN 100 WORDS
The thief has stolen so much.
Yet few notice - unless they really look.
As we sit among friends there is talk of exciting futures, busy days, retirement dreams.
I listen and manage a smile.
I look at Ken’s glazed eyes and think of our plans.
We do not make plans now.
I feel cheated.
I feel angry.
The thief has stolen all I hold dear, and now we can only plan each day.
For the thief has stolen Ken’s lively personality, his laid back attitude, his sense of fun and worst of all, his dignity.
The thief is Dementia.
thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com
The title is cleverly done, fooling the reader with the image of a property thief. It soon becomes clear that this thief is far more sinister, more hurtful, more invasive.
The short sentences in the middle of the piece make each statement punchy and dramatic and lead to the final four words, which end on an incredibly sad, but expected note.
My thanks to Jacqueline for sharing her 100 word story with us.
Dementia has been the subject of a number of novels in recent years, including Elizabeth is Missing, by Emma Healey and Still Alice, by Lisa Genova. Both of these novels were adapted for film and television.
In an intense and poignant story of love, family ties and memory loss, Fredrik Backman, famous for his novel, A Man Called Ove, has produced a sad, yet uplifting account of a slow farewell between a man and his grandson. And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer is beautifully written. It’s a short read and could probably be completed in an hour and a half. The grandfather is afraid that he will forget the deep love he had for his late wife.
His grandson promises to remind him of it every day. In a letter to the reader, Backman states that the novella is, ‘about missing someone who is still here’. This is a book that stayed with me, long after I had put it down.

CHARLES Fresh Start
Good Morning from a damp ad windy Penwortham.
The meteorologists tell us that Autumn is just around the corner. I am not sure if Summer ever arrived as this part of Lancashire seems to have been ‘under a cloud’, literally and metaphorically over the past few months.
But let us be slightly more positive. September, for many members of our family, is always the start of a new period in life. Two of my grandchildren went into secondary school in the past few days, and many young people will move from secondary education to sixth form or colleges. Even more difficult is the transition to university or college.
The memory of my son actually changing his mind on the day he was to travel to Scotland to enter university is still scarred in my brain. The car was packed, the journey planned, and suddenly the bombshell was dropped at breakfast. He decided to spurn the course on offer, went to work for a year and then took up a place in the following year.
Throughout the Ribble Valley many families will face such difficult decisions. It was wonderful to see the high standards gained by children in Blackburn, Clitheroe and beyond. Congratulations to all of them.
Others will be entering the world of work through modern apprenticeships and the fresh challenges they will face. Will young people be sent on missions for ‘sky hooks’ or again ‘steam hammers’ or ‘left handed screwdrivers’. As a student working part time I worked as a can lad on a building site – responsible for brewing gallons of tea and going to the local shops for fish and chips or pies.
Be advised – make sure your order is correct! Possibly, in modern times and the restrictions of health and safety, Can Lads or short term employment as labourers on building sites are no longer in existence. Sad Days really.
It seems that the whole world is changing at a rapid rate. My step father used to be the Steward of a local labour club, where the stent of cigarette tobacco seemed to permeate every are of our lives. The drive
thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com
towards eliminating smoking even in facilities outside the premises, seems to me, even as a person who has never smoked in his life, to be somewhat dictatorial.
Every person has the right to choose his or her way of life and smoking is an example of this. Each member of my family smoked and although I did not like it, that was the choice they made. I wonder what you think?
We seem to live in an age of expert opinion, where every issue is pounced upon as ‘consultants tell us how to live’, I think if we followed all the advice given, we would be required to give up alcohol, coffee, red meat and chocolate to live the life of a trappist monk. What happened to human choice and dignity? What do you think?
Ah well, it will soon be Christmas!
Take Care of Yourselves and Enjoy Life to the Full.

THE CULINARY FEATURE Apple and Blackberry Crumble
APPLE & BLACKBERRY CRUMBLE
As the evenings start to shorten and summer turns into autumn, it is time to think of seasonal produce to prepare this edition’s recipe. This is a very easy recipe but so satisfying and easy to prepare. I have chosen two fruits, blackberries which are now ripe for picking and apples, the iconic choice! Hence -
Method
1. Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas Mark 6
2. Peel and core the apples, cut into cubes and place I a saucepan along with the water, lemon juice and caster sugar. Cook for 5 minutes to soften, then remove from the heat.
3. Add the cleaned blackberries, stir and transfer to a large baking dish.
4. For the oaty crumble topping, place the flour in a large mixing bowl. Rub in
the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs, add the demerara sugar, cinnamon and oats.
5. Loosely spread this mixture over the fruit and place in the preheated oven.
6. Cook for 30 – 40 minutes until the top is golden. Remove from the oven and slightly cool before serving.
7. Accompany with warm custard, vanilla ice cream, softly whipped fresh cream, crème fraiche or my favourite, plain Greek yogurt hand swirled with acacia honey. Delicious!

Lake Garda
I think it may be time to stop holidaying in the lovely Lake Garda, The queues at Verona Airport makes the whole process ever harder. The Airport is expanding to accommodate the travellers for the winter Olympic Game, Passport control can take ages and could drive some people insane.
On trying to depart I have never seen queues that stretched so far, By the time we checked in I began to think it would be faster home by car. After a very long walk we arrived at departure which was just a large tent, Due to the heat and the queues my energy and patience was spent.
On the Runway we sat for two hours to find a take off slot, A two hour flight turning into over four a happy bunny I was not. Then to cap it all as we entered airspace over the Alps of France, I spilt most of my red wine all over me due to TURBULANCE.
Overgrown
Whilst out walking I see many gardens overgrown and gone to seed, With plants that grow to ten foot tall, and packed with weed. Conifers that have grown until they block out the sky, There are Privet hedges standing now over twenty foot high.
A long time past lawns were manicured with grass lush and green, Now I could look for ages and only overgrown grass now seen. Shrubs growing that should be no more than two foot high, Now some have grown to trees that can block out the sky.
Branches growing high and spilling over the public highway, Please trim your hedges so into the road I do not have to stray.
The Pothole
Every twenty yards there will be a Pothole in front of you, Then you have a choice, swerve or drive right through. When rain has fallen and the potholes are full with water, The time you have to react becomes evan shorter.
If you chose wrong and are traveling a little too fast, You will feel a shock as your tyre explodes with a blast. With your tyre damaged and damage to the wheel rim, The chance of your bank balance not depleting will be slim.
The council have no liability if of the potholes they were unaware, One of the only actions you can take is to pay up and possibly swear.

CLOSER TO NATURE
Biomimetic materials that literally mimic nature, are revolutionising dentistry and here in the Ribble Valley, one forward-thinking practice is one of the leading pioneers of this technique
Always keeping ahead of the industry, leading private dental practice Renovo is one of the first practices in the UK that has fully adapted the very latest techniques that can successfully restore teeth by using materials that mimic nature and the natural tooth. Biomimetic dentistry is revolutionising the way dentists can restore and repair teeth as
Dr Usman Riaz of Ribble Valley-based Renovo explains: “This is micro-invasive dentistry. We can preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible metal-free materials that act, feel and look just like our natural teeth.”
AVOIDING ROOT CANALS
“Biomimetic dentistry can help reduce your need for root canal therapy by up to 90 per cent. With immediate dentin sealing and resin coating, biomimetic dentistry gives pulps a vital chance to heal, helping maintain their natural resilience and extend their life. This is at the forefront of our core values,” adds Dr Riaz.
These latest advances in dental technology are set to change the way we view restorative dentistry. For teeth that have been damaged, porcelain crowns and veneers have, in the past, been the solution. However, more recent developments in bonding technology and the bio-materials used, have given dentists a new alternative, usually with no tooth removal.
PREDICTABLE OUTCOMES AND PAIN-FREE LONGERLASTING TEETH
Biomimetic restorations treat the causes of symptoms (cracks or caries near the pulp) so they do not result in sensitivity or pain after restoration: “Biomimetic techniques also restore the tooth in a way that mimics a tooth’s natural structure, preventing cracks around the restoration. Finally, the advanced adhesive techniques used in a biomimetic restoration have been shown to keep a restoration bonded for over 20 years, and counting, so the days of crowns or fillings falling out can be a thing of the past!”
These restorative materials that mimic nature, are not only perfect for aesthetically restoring teeth but they also help preserve and strengthen the natural tooth structure.
SCIENCE-BACKED DENTAL TREATMENT
Biomimetic dentistry is more technique sensitive and requires more detailed steps than traditional restorative practices. With Renovo’s approach, the dentists and the whole clinical team understand the science, or what we call the ‘why’ behind each step in their biomimetic restoration. The systematic steps
take the guesswork out of treatment planning, leaving clinicians and patients feeling confident in every restoration.
IMPROVED AESTHETICS
“Biomimetic dentistry is general dentistry and can be applied to every case we see at Renovo. The concepts of conserving tooth structure, saving pulps and superior adhesion will serve as a more predictable foundation of our work,” explains Dr Riaz.
“We can change, reshape and enhance teeth with these new materials. The biomimetic materials are also reinforcing teeth – it is a totally different concept to what we have seen previously.”
Adopting the latest biomimetic philosophies and having all the specialist techniques and materials available to them, the dentists at Renovo are pioneering in
their unique approach.
“Specialist techniques are used in biomimetic dentistry and the whole team have had advanced training,” says Dr Riaz. “For us, using non-invasive techniques and preserving teeth has always been something
WE GET OPTIMAL RESULTS WITH ZERO TOOTH REMOVAL AND THAT’S WHY THE BIOMIMETIC APPROACH IS SO POPULAR
we routinely believe in and practice, so biomimetic dentistry sits really well with that belief.
“It’s the way dentistry should be done –to save and conserve teeth has always been our gold standard.”
ZERO TOOTH LOSS MAXIMUM AESTHETICS
For nervous patients the biomimetic approach revolutionises the way they view a dental appointment: “For those people, this is an amazing development as the approach is to conserve tooth tissue using minimally invasive techniques. No anaesthetic is needed as there is zero tooth removal.”
While biomimetic dentistry can help to naturally strengthen and restore damaged teeth, it is also perfect for cosmetic procedures: “From a cosmetic point of view we can improve without having to compromise, which is a very powerful concept.
“With the latest biomimetic materials, we get incredible results and in many cases, it is much quicker too, as it often involves just one visit to the dentist.
“These treatment concepts and philosophy are popular in the US and Europe, but it has taken time to develop in the UK. We have had to understand the materials and perfect new techniques so we can carry out dentistry at a different level.”
HEALTHIER TEETH HEALTHIER YOU
By removing all toxicity and inflammation from the mouth, biological dentistry helps restore vitality, balance and systemic health.
“What we put in our mouth and more importantly, the teeth themselves, has a crucial role to play in our overall health. Gut health begins in the mouth. It’s more than just a gateway – it’s a mirror reflecting our overall health.” n

GREENFINGER GUIDE
As we leave Summer and head into Autumn, September always takes on a cooler climate and usually, fairly blustery as we’ve already seen of late. It is a beautiful time and the garden takes on a dreamy hue. The shorter days are becoming apparent so make the most of the sunny days. As August has been an easy month in the garden, we now need to press ahead with the autumn tasks, so with gloves at the ready, round up your tools and let’s get cracking !
1. Keep deadheading the bedding plants, remove the old flowers regularly, should get a few more weeks out of them.
2. Now is the time to trim back some of the perennials. I say some as I personally, leave any that have interesting characteristics, provide hips and seeds for the wildlife and are strong enough to withstand the winter weather. This allows the garden not to look as bleak over the coming months. However, this does depend on the individual plot and is essential for some, which will require spent leaves and stems removing to make them tidy and compact. Divide the ones that are growing too large, this will allow regrowth next year and provide good shaped plants. Once weed free, add a thick layer of compost or mulch to help the soil retain the moisture. Where you have gaps, enjoy the chance to visit your local garden centre for a new variety.
3. I do like to prune the rambling and climbing roses once they have finished flowering, the winds can easily snap the branches. The side shoots should be cut by two thirds and check for blackspot. Any affected leaves from the plant or that have fallen should be put in the dustbin not composted.
5. Net ponds before leaf fall gets under way.
6. Clean out cold frames and greenhouses ahead of autumn sowing and growing.
7. Now is the time to plant up your autumn displays. I love the cyclamens, such a sturdy plant and along with winter pansies, heathers, ivy, perhaps a dwarf conifer and some dwarf bulbs, containers and hanging baskets can make such glorious displays.
8. The borders can also be planted with spring flowering bulbs except tulips – see note 12. A huge array can be found at your local garden centre or spend a lovely evening browsing and ordering from the many mail order plant company catalogues that are now arriving through the post.
9. This is the ideal time to create or re-establish a compost heap, treat new summerhouses/ sheds/outbuildings before the winter arrives. Perhaps, build a cold frame, install a new waterbutt and of course, maintain your garden tools, the tricks of the trade!
10. Then into October, the already planted autumn baskets and pots should be looking cheery and colourful. Water regularly, deadhead and they should give pleasure over the winter.
11.Tie climbers to protect them from the winds. Wrap layers of fleece around delicate and half hardy plants to protect from frost and cold winter conditions, let’s hope it will be a mild one! Also, for protection, raise pots off the ground with pot feet to prevent waterlogging.
4. September is the perfect time to give special attention to the lawn. Raise the height of your mower blades and give the grass its final cut, leaving it slightly higher than the summer months to protect it from frost damage. Aerate with a garden fork and then apply an autumn feed.
thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com
12. The tulip bulbs should be planted towards the end of October when the ground temperature has dropped.
So, HAPPY GARDENING, enjoy your autumn preparations as much as I will and don’t forget the wildlife – nuts, seeds and fresh water will be greatly appreciated.

“The family met Michael with a view to discussing a house clearance. Michael then followed this up by a visit to the property, promptly sending clear details of costs and allowances for us to consider. Michael arrived on the arranged day and almost everything was cleared within two days. To say we were pleased, was an understatement. A trustworthy business, right on our doorstep.”

Years of experience, professionalism and competitive prices are the reasons why Broughton Roofing have developed into a trusted, reliable company across Lancashire.
From leaking flat roof repairs, pitch roof repairs to total replacement or just advice on which roof or guttering, Jamie and Kyle are happy to help.
Broughton Roofing was founded by Jamie who started learning his trade when he left school, working under his fathers guidance. Kyle started out as an apprentice for Jamie and is now a partner in the business.
"We specialise in covering flat roofs with synthetic rubber from
tyre giants Firestone. There are no joints to cause leaks as it is sold in single sheets big enough for most roofs. Firestone RubberCover has a 20-year material warranty but can last up to 50 years.
“If holed, it is easily repaired and needs little or no maintenance." says Kyle.
Jamie says: “As well as flat roofing installations and flat roof repairs we also supply and fit UPVC guttering, fascias and soffits, roof lights and lead work plus Velux window installation.
“We fit in around our customers’ lives. If you cannot see us until the evening, we will see you then.
“Nothing is too much trouble for us and if you need a job promptly, we are prepared to work seven days a week to deliver it on time.”
