CHARLES Snowdrops

As we move inexorably into February and March, signs of Spring and new beginnings appear all around.

The snow has dissipated, and the howling gales of Storm Eowyn are beginning to ebb away.

It is ironic that the most severe storm in years is named after a Rhohan princess in Lord of the Rings, for she is a creator of great beauty and wisdom, bringing great strength and loyalty to the problems she faces. For those people so severely affected by those horrific storms, she is an example of the strength and courage they need in these dreadful times. Perhaps the storm has some benefits for it can blow away bad memories or indeed the terrible implications of horrific crimes committed recently. Spring is a time of regeneration and, regardless of our own views, change is certainly happening throughout our own part of the world. Plans to regenerate the Ribble Valley and even to build new schools or improve the transport system are afoot. I am aware that many of our neighbours may not be as fortunate as others especially in light of the ongoing cost of living crisis.

But recently certain events have made me, and many of our readers look at life a little differently. There are plans to build a new Prison just a few miles away from us. But in the midst of all of this doom and gloom, there are glimpses of fresh hope.

Friends of mine have just purchased a new home in our area, and sometimes we forget just how lucky we are. As a child, living in a terraced house in Bolton, surrounded by cotton mills belching out smoke, we could only dream of living in a pleasant home, often within easy reach of the countryside. For many, the notion of a car sitting outside the front door was stuff that dreams are made of.

Sometimes, we should consider, in the depths of our own self despair, that may people are worse off than us. As a person who was laid to waste initially with rheumatoid arthritis, I can still remember as a young boy being sent to a neighbour to do her shopping, as her hands and feet were badly twisted by self same disease.

SNOWDROPS

Fortunately medical science has developed to ease such problems. Just next month my better half will be 80 years old. I honestly cannot remember one single person of that age living in my neighbourhood when I was a child.

The new year has brought hope, even to the extent that my grandson is now playing football at the Blackburn Rovers Academy where the facilities are outstanding. His grandfather, a devoted supporter of Bolton Wanderers, is still speaking to himbut only just! His mother and father are recovering from major surgery for illnesses which would have been terminal when I was a child.

February and March bring in 2 great

occasions - St Valentines day and St Patricks Day - times when we are able to celebrate. Perhaps in this climate that we live in today, a celebration is just what we need. As a child, I can remember my mother always receiving shamrock ‘from home’, and we had a fabulous day. To all of our readers I can offer you the Gaelic Slante which is a greeting of good health and happiness. If you can, enjoy a drink of the black stuff, but not too much.

See you soon.

The Man Drawer

A man drawer full of bits and bobs, from elastic bands, to old door knobs. Objects that someday might come in, Assorted nails stored in shiny tin.

Used sandpaper and a useful thing Broken pegs and tangled string. Unused charity bags by the score, Old clothes used for polishing floor.

A tube glue that will no longer stick, old hat band that reads Kiss me quick.

Six pens that have now run out of ink, A man drawer is much more than you think.

It's Getting Colder

Cold enters the Body, An invasive force

Succeeding in seducing Muscles and Bones.

At the same time, it Invigorates and excites. The Wind is gentle both Hot and Cold, caressing Faces and kissing lips. Coats hug the Skin, Comforting the Body As a mothers embrace Protects her child.

The intermittent sun's rays Stroke faces, gently whispering, Softly. enticing words of Friendship and intimacy. Winter, is not to be Expected with trepidation And fear but, looked Forward to and enjoyed.

Poetry By Ornella

It’s a Sin

Please listen to me for a while for I think it’ a Sin, My local pub now stocks over sixty bottles of gin

The drink I think will be missing from the bar I fear, the reason Pubs were opened that’s a good pint of beer.

Things went downhill when they started selling beer from a kegs.

Then one day they had removed from the bar the pickled eggs. The landlord told me he had to upgrade move with the time. I said to him I want you to leave things alone that would be fine’.

I know that pubs have had to go all fancy and up to date, but from going upmarket I wish some pubs would wait. The only thing I want in a pub is a beer if that’s being rude I don’t want to go to a theme pub that serves wine and food.

Winter Has Passed

Winter has gone and dark nights are past.

I will be able to sit and enjoy Sun at last.

Now that I have retired and I have the time

To sit in the garden drinking a glass of wine.

Sat here I could see how fast the grass does grow I may have to put down my glass and the lawn to mow.

When my tasks have ended I think it would be a sin, If I did not watch the Sunset without a glass of gin.

I feel I need to exercise before I get to fat. Off I go indoors now to find my old sun hat.

So that I am able to watch as the sun sets in the sky, I may have to raid the fridge and take out a Pork pie.

'HELP YOURSELF' TO A JANUARY BOOK

Happy New Year! Opinions are divided about January. Some find it a long, dark, chilly season with little to look forward to, while others embrace the semi-hibernation and the chance to stay indoors and catch up on some reading.

The start of the new year is, traditionally, an opportunity for personal reflection. It’s interesting to note that more books about self-help are bought in January than in any other month of the year.

There is advice on mindfulness, weight loss, improving our fitness, developing creativity, indeed the list goes on and on. In fact there are so many genres that Amazon break these down into no less than 28 sub-categories.

I am usually rather sceptical of celebrities who publish self-help books. However, I picked up ‘Walk Yourself Happy’ by Julia Bradbury (Countryfile) over Christmas and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the book is put together

In 2021, Julia Bradbury was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her book is not, however, about her treatment, or about how she coped with the devastating diagnosis. It’s about living a happy, healthy and fulfilling life.

For Julia, this means walking and getting outside in nature at every opportunity. There is no preaching, she never claims to be an expert, although she draws on the evidence of experts to support her passion for the remarkable healing properties of nature.

She explains how anyone can walk to improve their health and well-being;

‘The thing about walking is that you don’t need fancy kit or lots of money, a check sheet or a team leader. You don’t need a high level of physical fitness or talent. Ego and ambition can be left at home.’

There is a simplicity about how she describes the changes she made post cancer, which includes finding joy in the small things that add up to helping us become happier and healthier. It’s a book I will certainly revisit.

thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com

Whatever resolutions you made or books you bought to support yourself, I do hope it’s all going well.

Do let us know if you found anything that gave you some real motivation. However you are coping in January, by the time you read this, it will be over!

intervention with dental implant placements was crucial in this case.”

Cathy adds: “My general dentist told me I needed to go and see Dr Usman and his team at Renovo for long-term permanent treatment. I plucked up the courage and went.”

THIS LEVEL OF DENTISTRY CHANGES PEOPLES’ LIVES

Following an X-ray and jaw scans, the news was not good for Cathy: “I have always looked after myself and losing my teeth was my idea of hell. It was a terrible shock. Usman said I wouldn’t like dentures but left the decision totally to me. He explained the procedure and reassured me it would be pain free, so I eventually made the decision and agreed to implants.”

Dr Riaz and the award-winning Renovo team set to work, beginning a detailed assessment of what could be done. In the lead up to the same-day, full upper and lower arch implants, Dr Riaz explained the

NEW BEGINNING…

A busy care worker has had her life transformed following pioneering same-day dental implant treatment carried out here in the Ribble Valley

Leading the way in UK implant technology is Lancashire-based Renovo Dental, which was one of the first implant centres in the country to adopt the highly successful, ground-breaking ‘Fully Guided Implant Surgery’ technique.

Highly experienced in this same-day procedure, implant surgeon Dr Usman Riaz and a specialist team, including in-house dental technicians, worked together using the latest digital technology to replace both upper and lower teeth permanently in just over three hours – omitting the need for dentures.

Despite following strict hygiene protocols and advice by her own dentist, Catherine’s gums and bone levels had deteriorated further, causing unsightly gaps in her teeth and several teeth became mobile.

“This is what end-stage gum disease looks like,” Dr Riaz explains. “Unfortunately, genetics were not in the patient’s favour. Typically, this sort of problem develops later in life, but Cathy is relatively young and her teeth were beyond saving.

“At this point, it is less about preserving teeth and all about using the remaining bone and soft tissue to help restore full function, aesthetics and confidence. Timing of the

procedure in detail to Cathy, who arrived at the state-of-the-art surgery in Chatburn, early in the morning.

“Usman and the team were fantastic. It’s not like going to the dentist, it’s like visiting a friend. They explained everything so I wasn’t at all nervous about the procedure. I had got to know them and it is obvious that they are experts in their field,” adds Cathy.

The team, including specialist periodontist Dr Khurrum Hussain along with a team of expert dental technicians, began work eliminating all sources of infection using state-of the-art laser technology, that eradicates over 99 per cent

of all harmful bacteria.

With gum contouring and bone grafts carried out on the same day, Cathy, under sedation, was painlessly fitted with a completely new set of upper and lower implant teeth in a procedure that has made Renovo Dental a flagship practice for this digital, full-arch implant technique.

During their years’ of experience, the team has refined the procedure utilising the latest in-house, digital CT-guided technology that ensures pinpoint accuracy.

This technique for implants is faster, easier and more efficient for the surgeons and safer, and more comfortable, for patients with faster healing times.

“It is Artificial Intelligence with a human touch,” explains Dr Riaz. “Our surgery protocol is a unique concept for digital guidance that allows us to plan and place dental implants with perfect accuracy. It eliminates human error.”

Cathy, who was delighted with the results, adds: “When I looked in the mirror and smiled it was unbelievable. I have always covered my

mouth when I smile because of my teeth.”

The transformation is astounding – Cathy now looks 20 years younger following the procedure and has gained immeasurable confidence: “My teeth look totally natural and I am thrilled!”

Speaking about the team at Renovo Dental, which was named the North of England’s Best Practice and Best Referral Practice at the prestigious Dentistry Awards, Cathy adds: “These guys are incredible. After years of avoiding having pictures taken, I’m incredibly grateful to Usman and his team for their hard work, dedication and patience. You really couldn’t be in safer hands. I now have a new lease of life and can’t stop smiling –thank-you!”

THESE GUYS ARE INCREDIBLE. I CAN’T STOP SMILING – THANK-YOU!

Dr Riaz, who is a highly experienced clinician specialising in aesthetic and implant dentistry, adds: “Obviously, perfect planning and preparation is key to this sort of specialist dentistry.

“The final implant teeth are all hand layered ceramic teeth, crafted by our specialist dental ceramists. We can make as many

changes as we like – to the shape, texture, character and vitality of the teeth. This is truly bespoke, customised dentistry.

“The implants feel like real teeth. In Cathy’s case it has turned back the clock and given her so much confidence. It really is life changing dentistry.” n

GARDENS Greenfinger Guide

ENCOURAGING WILDLIFE INTO YOUR GARDEN

As the garden has now well and truly been put to bed for the cold winter months, my challenge to you is to encourage as much wildlife into your patch!

As biodiversity is on everyone’s mind with climate change, pollution and therefore, habitat loss and invasive species, let’s do our bit and create the best living arrangements for all our visiting creatures.

Any new trees or shrubs that you planted in the autumn will provide food and shelter for many types of wildlife. Talking of shelters...

Our compost heaps are a lovely habitat for frogs, spiders, woodlice and worms. Uncut perennials can also shelter insects in their hollow stems. Grass and wildflowers will provide cover and food for wildlife. Piles of leaves and twigs, rotting logs, pinecones, stones and rocks will all provide winter protection.

nuts, chopped into very small pieces and again, just enough for a day for freshness. This will attract many small species and give you so much pleasure to watch. Robins and blue tits frequent mine which is such a delight.

A hedgehog house is also a great buy, mine is occupied annually. Specific hedgehog food can be purchased from your local pet store or ordered online. Alternatively, a shallow dish with cat or dog food will be enjoyed, just offer enough for one day and then replenish.

The purchase of a bug house or, even make your own using pieces of wood to create a house shape is an excellent idea. Shelves and dividers could then be added. Each part should then be stuffed with bamboo canes, straw, small pebbles, dry leaves, twigs, hollow stems, dead grass, bits of bark and then covered with chicken wire. This will create a warm dry space for lots of creepy crawlies.

Bird baths are essential - provide fresh water daily. Make sure it is not frozen in this cold snap as it is a lifeline for our feathered friends. A bird table is a wonderful investment, hang bird seed holders, fat balls and on the actual table, offer fruit – apples, pears, plums, suet block, cooked rice, boiled potatoes and even chopped up boiled eggs. A scattering of grated cheese, biscuit crumbs and cake would all be well appreciated as well as unsalted

thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com

A lovely project I did with my grandchildren recently was ‘ bird hanging feeders’ – we covered empty toilet roll holders with peanut butter and then rolled them with bird seed. String was then threaded through the holder , tied and hung on the tree branches. Great fun, enjoyed by the children and the birds in turn! So, enjoy watching the wildlife from your favourite chair and don’t forget to plan for all your forthcoming garden projects in the months ahead!

Years of experience, professionalism and competitive prices are the reasons why Broughton Roofing have developed into a trusted, reliable company across Lancashire.

From leaking flat roof repairs, pitch roof repairs to total replacement or just advice on which roof or guttering, Jamie and Kyle are happy to help.

Broughton Roofing was founded by Jamie who started learning his trade when he left school, working under his fathers guidance. Kyle started out as an apprentice for Jamie and is now a partner in the business.

"We specialise in covering flat roofs with synthetic rubber from

tyre giants Firestone. There are no joints to cause leaks as it is sold in single sheets big enough for most roofs. Firestone RubberCover has a 20-year material warranty but can last up to 50 years.

“If holed, it is easily repaired and needs little or no maintenance." says Kyle.

Jamie says: “As well as flat roofing installations and flat roof repairs we also supply and fit UPVC guttering, fascias and soffits, roof lights and lead work plus Velux window installation.

“We fit in around our customers’ lives. If you cannot see us until the evening, we will see you then.

“Nothing is too much trouble for us and if you need a job promptly, we are prepared to work seven days a week to deliver it on time.”
