Complimentary events, refreshments and birthday cake!
Whilst some things have changed in the last quarter of a century century (waistlines and grey hairs to name but two) our working days on Backridge Farm have remained reassuringly unchanged.
The sun rises over Pendle every morning on the workshop doors and sets at the farm gate, and surrounded by wildlife and hedge-lined lanes, we have watched the rhythm of the seasons flow from one year to the next – until suddenly, here we are 25 years later!
We think that’s a good enough reason to celebrate as any and also to say thank-you to everyone who has kept us company along the way.
So please join us - and some of our talented neighbours and artisans - for a few hours of laughter, good wine and good company to celebrate our 25th birthday.

I now own my fantastic Man Bag, I think it looks good but I’ll not brag.
What I need this bag carries all, It’s neither too big or is it too small. Although carrying everything I need,
I can never find things with speed. For the bag seems to grow with time, It even holds three bottles of wine. The reason I like it, I will tell you why, Is that it can hold at least six pork pie.
Sat in the garden a thought popped into my head, The time has come now, “I need Man-Shed”. The garage is full with bits and bobs to keep, However, now all my things are in a big heap.
I need a man shed, with a very comfy seat, For when I am indoors, I am always under the feet. My shed would have a big wood burning stove, And just for a laugh, it would be painted mauve.
I would sit in my shed for hours and hours, With a glass of Gin, Surrounded by flowers.
When please tell me when will end the winter wet and rain?
If it lasts for many more days it will drive me totally insane.
We always get the rain here in Lancashire in the Northwest, I have gone through two brollies and I’m not impressed.
I never in my life thought these words would come from my mouth, but if the rain doesn’t stop soon I may have to move down South.
Not to see the sunshine again for a month or so fills me with dread, Looking down at my feet now they are starting to become webbed.
I know it is because of the rain the Ribble Valley is so green and lush, But to see more sunshine I would put up with a bit of brown at a push.
Even though I am in Lancashire and maybe feeling wet and sometimes sad, if I moved down south to the sun, I’m sure that would drive me mad.

Ten married couples met recently to launch an appeal to raise £20,000 to restore the important Lychgate at the Parish Church of St Lawrence in Longridge. The gate has special significance to all the couples, who tied the knot in the church. Often decorated with flowers, they each used the gate to provide a backdrop to their wedding photos, or to shelter from unwelcome showers on their special day.
The couples were keen that the Lychgate should be preserved for future generations. From Bill and Adrienne, who were married in 1959, to Geoff and Kathleen who celebrate their Golden Wedding in September, to Chris and Elizabeth who got hitched in September of last year. Together the ten couples had clocked up a total of 387 years of marriage between them.
The gate is also important to the wider community, many of whom have congregated under it at the start of baptisms, funerals or visits to the churchyard. Since it was installed in 1939, it has been a gathering point for celebration and lament for many locals and is now threatened by fungal rot and wood boring beetles. The deterioration is such that a complete restoration is needed. Through the appeal, it is hoped that the wider community will help to save it.
The Lychgate was given by Agnes Ellen Smith in memory of her husband Thomas Charles Smith, who wrote the first comprehensive history of Longridge, and her brother William Thomas Tullis the son of James Tullis of Cooper and Tullis the Preston stonemason and master builders responsible for such buildings as Preston Town Hall, Preston Railway Station and the Harris Library and Museum.
There has been a church dedicated to St. Lawrence on the site since the early 1500’s. Longridge is unusual in that it has two Anglican churches. The largest of which is off Berry Lane and dedicated to St. Paul. Longridge people have worshipped and maintained these two fine and much used buildings since 1890 – both built of Longridge Stone.
As part of the restoration appeal there is to be a Flower Festival in St. Lawrence Church over the weekend of the 13th & 14th July and other events are planned over the coming months. Those wishing to support the appeal can do so by going to www.justgiving.com/campaign/ lychgate

Born and raised in Rossendale, friends Neil Catlow and Dino Corse were deeply involved in the music scene around Burnley, Accrington, and Manchester. Seventeen years ago, Neil was paralyzed in a motocross accident. However, after the isolation of the Covid Pandemic, both Dino and Neil eagerly returned to life and music as restrictions were lifted. The club scene reignited Neil's long-standing dream of becoming a DJ.
Encouraged by Dino, Neil purchased a set of decks and taught himself to DJ. Within six months, Neil progressed from barely operating the decks to having his mixes featured on online radio stations in the UK and internationally. Thus, DJ Cat emerged! Following the success of their initial events, they ventured into something new with an 80's Night, which was a hit. Now, they're at it again with "Welcome To Our House - Back to the 80's," an 80's-themed extravaganza with a charitable heart, as all proceeds will go to Derian House Children's Hospice. Derian House offers crucial support to children with life-limiting illnesses and their families in the region.
They've put considerable effort into planning and have secured Steve Berry, the former Top Gear presenter, as the evening's host, alongside
thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com
four top acts: DJ Cl3ggy, Strictly 80's - Phil Thomas, The Lomax Brothers, and DJ Cat himself will be in attendance. Additionally, there will be a Charity Auction and Raffle, with prizes generously donated by local businesses to support Derian House (a complete list of donors will be available on the 'Welcome to Our House' Facebook Page). The Lomax Brothers, a remarkably talented piano and singing duo, will be playing the ivories, sharing their infectious joy and enthusiasm through their lively performance and relaxed stage presence – a testament to their lifelong partnership as performers. Phil Thomas embodies the essence of the 80s with his one-man tribute, covering a broad array of 80s hits that will get you dancing.
This event promises great value for money, with the added bonus that proceeds will support a noble cause. Tickets for this thrilling event on Saturday, 3rd August at St Mary's Chambers, 7 Oakley Rd, Rawtenstall, Rossendale, BB4 6RB, are available for £15.00 via Skiddle or at the door. Attendees must be 18 or older.
If any local businesses would consider a donation of a product or service for our Auction/ Raffle in aid of Derian House, it would be gratefully received and much appreciated.

As I sit in a cubicle in Royal Preston Hospital, the ironies of life become even more real.
In my last set of ramblings, life seemed to be quite optimistic, almost as if the balance of life had reached a state of peaceful equilibrium. Sadly, the Sword of Damocles seems to hang over the lives of so many people, and tragedy, however defined, is not so far away.
I am a great subscriber to ‘Chaos Theory’, by which harmony can be achieved only through Disorder. I wonder if any of you have undergone the tsunami of disturbance which has affected my life in the past month or so.
Perhaps it began just a few days ago when my wife fell and broke her hip. After waiting for over three hours, the ambulance arrived and took her off to hospital. She spent the next thirty six hours in A&E, waiting for a bed in the hospital. Her operation took place three days later.
To make matters worse, my own leg developed a mysterious infect and I too spent five hours in A&E on Friday evening. At one time we could have spoken about the monkeys running the Zoo, but the Animal Rights people may take offence.
Then of course we had our recent General Election which’ sadly’ caused Ribble Valley people to lose their M.P., Nigel Evans, who had represented the people of the area for many years before.
The election itself proved to be a ‘Tsunami’ of change, as a new Government took control of our country. Change is inevitable, but not at its current tempestuous pace.
So, for me at least, we need a period of rest and recuperation. I wonder if any of you can help? Within the next few months, I would like to arrange a ‘staycation’, whereby my wife and I, with our two news Cockapoo puppies, would like somewhere to stay for a week or so.
But there again, it always is the case that someone is worse off than you. My friend Tony passed away just a few
days ago. He and his wife had been married for over 62 years, and she is naturally devastated, so let us keep that in mind.
On the other hand, it appears that we are living in an increasingly ‘Digital Universe.’ I remain unconvinced by the merits of such technology as events are publicised often without the permission of participants. My grand daughter leaves her primary school this year and suddenly her ‘leavers party’ is on Facebook! How often has this happened to you or members of your family.
On the other hand, before we reach for the tablets, let us bear in mind that there is a great deal to be thankful for. My wife has had a full hip replacement and is now moving around with the aid of crutches. I would imagine that for many of the older generation, such a
thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com
concept would have been unthinkable in our childhood.
There is no doubt that the earthquake of the past few days and weeks will make many of us consider our future in a different life. I wonder if anyone thinks like me that I am quite happy to be considered elderly, as the challenges facing our younger generation are quite considerable. One thing is certain – we all need to pull together if we are to create a better lifestyle.
As the saying goes: ‘Always look on the bright side of life.’
Til the next time,
Take care,
Here we are in Summer, the months of beautiful blooms! The gardens will be at their very, very best, ablaze with colour and the time of the year when we sit in our favourite chair along with an iced cold drink and be consumed by the heady fragrance of flowers.
We do have however, a checklist before all that relaxation can take place but do just sit and look at the pleasing view that is yours to enjoy, all down to your hard work.
So, on that note, tick off the jobs and then, let Summer begin.
1. At this time of year, watering is the key. Keep on top of this daily either in the morning or evening. Then feeding with a liquid fertilizer every other week will be beneficial to the longevity of the flowers.
2. Continue mowing the lawn weekly. Set the mower blades on high and let the grass grow longer before cutting.
4. To increase your displays of bearded irises next year, lift, divide and repeat.
5. Carry on cutting back perennial plants to keep the borders tidy.
6. Tie in new growth on climbing plants.
3. Keep an eye on the flowerbeds, borders, pots and hanging baskets. Remove any withered and spent blooms. Deadhead regularly through the summer to encourage growth of new flowers and revive displays.
thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com
Prune the lupins, hardy geraniums, delphiniums and roses after the first flush of flowers to encourage further blooms.
8. Check the roses for black spot, remove and destroy any affected leaves. Use a rose treatment.
9. Trim the English lavender and clip into a neat shape.
10. Prune the wisteria by removing the whippy side shoots back to just five or six leaves.
Lastly, beat the weeds! Although they won’t be growing as fast as in the Spring, our current climate of sun and rain is unfortunately, a perfect combination for their growth.
Then roll out the barbecue, invite your family and friends to celebrate. Enjoy!

It is now over a year since I asked for any memories of the Cavendish Club and the fire that destroyed it in December 1972. My thanks to everyone who responded, especially David Bowers from Billington, who recounted his experience of attending the fire. The short story based on the events of that night has now been published in an anthology of stories set in Lancashire.
Do you recall the Easter Fair which was held on the site of the old outdoor market? Perhaps you did your shopping in the covered market which was demolished to make way for the bus terminal. Or maybe you still like to eat fish and chips at the Clacky Diner in Great Harwood. All of these places and more feature in the collection, which is available from Amazon. Below is a flavour of a handful of the stories.
When Ed passes his eleven plus, everyone is overjoyed, everyone that is, except Ed. His worries threaten to spoil a visit to the Easter Fair. But things have a way of working out and with his family as support, he realises that there is more than one way to make your worries disappear.
Helen sorts through her dead mother’s belongings, despairing at the amount of memorabilia she has left behind. An unopened letter with her name on it from a bundle dated 1977 comes to light. Was this her mother once again trying to control her, or was Mother right to keep the letter a secret?
Dan has always struggled with life. Black moods haunt him and he hates his job in the mill. When he meets Edie he glimpses a chance to be happy, yet he knows it is fragile. As things fall apart, even his relationship with God may not be enough to save him.
On December 18th 1972, a fire at the Cavendish Club in Blackburn destroyed the nightclub. Although underage, Louise was there on the night and when she fears the worst, turns to younger sister Claire to help pick up the pieces.
The book is available from Amazon in both paperback and Kindle format.

I wonder how many of you thought about the challenge to write a story in exactly 100 words, yet never got down to actually doing it? Claire Ellis did and her story is featured below.
What I love about this piece is the pace. From the first sentence, we are with the character and their intent on escape. Claire very cleverly draws us in, each reader imagining who is on the run, speculating on various scenarios until almost at the end when one word explains it all. As soon as I knew the identity of the main character, I had to read the story again with him in mind. Thanks, Claire, for sharing this with us.
Feel free to have a go at a short story in just 100 words. If you do, send it to catherinesfinch7@gmail.com - You may find your story in print!

Got to make it.
Just got to make it.
Got so close last time and then they caught me. Caught me off guard. Got to be on my guard.
Got to move slowly, don’t let them see me.
Got to make it. Just got to make it next time.
I’ve got my chance!
They’ve got distracted. They’re not looking! This is looking good. I’m good to go! I’m nearly at …
“…the road, George, be careful! Come on, time to put your lead on.”
Nearly made it.
So nearly made it.
Got to make it next time.
Just got to…

Maas' continuation of the saga stretches the limits, placing the destiny of their universe in the balance with Bryce and Hunt at the center.
ByLemonySnickett
Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ offers nothing but misery and despair. There’s still time to select another internationally acclaimed series to read. However, if you choose to explore the grim adventures of the Baudelaire orphans, proceed with caution.
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent and charming children with resourceful minds and pleasant appearances. Yet, their luck is extraordinarily dismal. In ‘The Bad Beginning’, they face a vile and greedy villain, uncomfortable clothing, a catastrophic fire, a scheme to seize their inheritance, and cold porridge for breakfast. Following the footsteps of great narrators from Dickens to Dahl, this series presents a brilliantly dark comedy that is both profoundly literary and playfully irreverent, humorous and skillfully constructed.

“The family met Michael with a view to discussing a house clearance. Michael then followed this up by a visit to the property, promptly sending clear details of costs and allowances for us to consider. Michael arrived on the arranged day and almost everything was cleared within two days. To say we were pleased, was an understatement. A trustworthy business, right on our doorstep.”
