MORE THAN JUST FRAGRANCE…

The use of essential oils to help enhance the good parts of our lives, and balance out some of the more negative aspects, continues to grow

Rightly known for changing our mood and creating ambience, fragrance is far more than a quick spritz on the wrists, and we now understand the benefits of using it in the workplace and home. Studies prove that fragrance influences how we perceive and feel about an activity or place.

SWITCHING YOUR FRAGRANCES CAN HELP YOU CLOSE THE DOOR ON WORK AND ESTABLISH A MORE RELAXING ENVIRONMENT

Here’s how it works:

Firstly, we smell with our brains and not with our nose. When inhaling fragrance, compounds enter the olfactory system via the nasal passage and from there directly impact the limbic system – the area of the brain dealing with emotions, memory and mood. Understanding this means we can choose fragrance to create positive changes to mood,

emotion, productivity – and to help reduce stress and tension. Also, knowing how different oils work means we can put them to better use so, we can differentiate between work, social and relaxation areas using fragrance. Essential oils are well researched and information is readily available and it’s worth taking the time to understand their benefits (and possible negatives).

Here’s a few to get you started:

Lavender: is seriously versatile but understanding that it promotes restful sleep and relaxation means you know to choose wisely where to use it – not so good for post lunch – but a definite contender for the end of the day. Note – lavender can help soothe hyperactive stress but if there’s depression showing itself as sleepiness and apathy, then lavender is NOT the oil to use. Instead try rose for balance or citrus for uplift.

Rose Geranium: balances emotions, calms and uplifts, so great for interviews and anyone who ‘yo-yos’ mood-wise – hormonal shifts anyone?

Grapefruit and sharp Citrus: is refreshing, antiseptic, stimulating – a perfect start to the day.

Petitgrain: is uplifting, anti-inflammatory and good for exhaustion.

Rose: balances, grounds, stabilises and calms. Vetiver: is grounding, soothing and calms irritability.

Peppermint: is great for headaches and nausea. So, switching your fragrances can help you close the door on work or difficult situations and establish a more relaxing environment.

Melt uses many different essential oils to create their fragrances, which establishes that all-important ambience for home and work. We have a peaceful Chandlery and perfumery where you can while away an hour selecting your perfect fragrance, glass of wine in hand. We operate a ‘no rush, no push’ welcome for customers and are always delighted to talk fragrance should you wish.

To finish – here are a few fun scented snippets!

We have a smell print (like it or not) which is as unique as a fingerprint and only ever the same in identical twins.

It takes us half a second to respond to smell, compared with a full second to respond to pain. Perfumers do not have ‘better noses’ – they just know how to use them.

Humans have 350 functional olfactory receptor genes – mice have 1300!

Ambergris is one of the most prized and valuable raw materials in perfumery. It is also produced from the vomit of Sperm whales –who discovered that then? n

FOREVER HOMES

This exclusive development for over-55s is attracting demand for those with an eye on retirement

When choosing a home to buy, most of us think in the present. We visualise how the living space and location will meet our current needs, but an increasing number of people are looking at the long-term picture and seeking a ‘forever home’ that will serve them not only now, but also into retirement and later life.

Crescent Gardens, a new development of bungalows on the outskirts of Clitheroe, is generating huge interest from forward-thinking homebuyers. Highbrook Homes are building a range of two- and three-bedroom properties offering ample space in a future-proof layout enhanced by an advanced specification throughout.

With a lack of newly built bungalows in today’s market, Crescent Gardens represents a rare opportunity. Providing a private estate, Duravit sanitaryware and Leicht kitchens equipped with high-tech appliances, the development will also appeal to those looking to downsize without compromising on luxury and comfort.

The detached Warwick showhome illustrates the attention to detail that Highbrook has applied to the design of Crescent Gardens, providing versatile space that caters for people of working age who have one eye on retirement. The property features an impressive entrance hallway, openplan lounge, dining and kitchen areas, three double bedrooms, a

four-piece bathroom, and a detached garage. A palatial master bedroom and superbly equipped ensuite shower room provide unparalleled space and light.

Highbrook Homes has also included features that will appeal to environmentally-conscious purchasers who are mindful of the planet’s future as well as their own. Every Warwick comes with energy saving features, garage and an electric vehicle charging point, helping homebuyers to reduce carbon emissions as well as the cost of running their car.

The semi-detached two-bedroom Bourne is another impressive design on offer. The property features a substantial open-plan dining kitchen, spacious lounge, family bathroom and a luxurious master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and generous storage space.

While we can all expect to slow down as we mature, many of us like to maintain an active lifestyle as we approach and enter retirement. Crescent Gardens is perfectly located to serve that need. Situated in Barrow, off the A59 into Clitheroe, the development enjoys the glorious surroundings of the Ribble Valley and offers easy access to a variety of attractions and amenities. The village is an ideal base for exploring Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland - an area of outstanding natural beauty,

where a range of footpaths and cycling routes take in stunning rural scenery.

The nearby market town of Clitheroe is a popular destination well known for its wide range of specialist, independent and boutique stores offering exclusive fashion and highquality food and drink. The town includes a doctor’s surgery and two dental practices. Clitheroe Golf Club is a stunning parkland course with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

Selected plots at Crescent Gardens come with part exchange or a range of special incentives, including a choice of flooring options and front and rear gardens turfed.

Homebuyers are advised to enquire at the earliest opportunity to secure their plot at this popular development. Visit the show home or go to highbrookhomes.co.uk for a virtual tour.

PLAYING WITH WORDS

It is estimated that the average person uses between 800 and 1,000 different words every day.

Due to the fact that many words are repeated, the daily word count could be as high as 10 000 with some chatterboxes using far more than average!

Anyone who has written an essay with a restricted number of words will know the feeling of disbelief when you realise you are a couple of thousand words over the limit. To make choices about what to keep and what to discard can be tough.

There’s a play called Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons by Sam Steiner, where a state imposed ‘Hush Law’ limits the words everyone is allowed to use to 145 each day.

The young couple in the play struggle to continue their relationship yet learn to find alternative ways to share their love. The word restriction is an interesting situation to contemplate. Could you manage a day with only 145 words?

I attempted the challenge to write a story that is exactly 100 words long, excluding the title. Try it! It’s a good exercise in editing a piece of text to the absolute essentials whilst developing characters and a simple plot. I chose to use dialogue in the following piece.

If you fancy having a go, send me your attempts and you may find yourself in print!

A Place

A place where accumulated treasure is stored,

A place where being tidy can just be ignored.

A place with Comfy Chair, and Kettle for a brew,

A place to spend time with Bottle and Corkscrew

A place where life’s problems are left at the Door,

A place where you don’t need Carpet on the Floor.

A place where decisions never have to be made,

A place precious to store the lawnmower and Spade.

A place to escape where chores are ignored.

A place where a man needs never be bored.

The Bacon Butty

A Bacon butty is one taste that cannot be beat, If I had my way everyday I would eat this treat.

Some people add sauces brown, and others red, Others, just leave the Bacon nude it has to be said.

Some do like this treat on bread fluffy and white,

Although in my opinion I don’t think that’s right.

I think you have to eat the bacon on a white bun,

Generously buttered so you can see the butter run.

Four slices of the best dry cured bacon is best, I always lift the top to see if it passes the test.

Back in the Day

I can remember when younger and watching TV, You had only two Channels to watch BBC or ITV. There was no Netflix, Freeview, Apple or Sky, Now choosing a channel brings a tear to my eye.

When Jerry Lee Lewis rocked around the clock,

A time before Twitter, Youtube, and Tik Tok,

When phones were just for the spoken word,

Before the word’s Computer, and Internet were heard.

Now younger people may think this absurd,

The fast technology today makes me scared.

CHARLES Summertime

It always seems strange that, in general, people look forward to ‘Summertime’. Perhaps it is the thought of holidays, basking on a sun blessed beach for away from the humdrum existence of everyday life. In some cases, it may be the concept of a new school, a fresh start in college or university, or even a new job.

Recently ‘her indoors’ and I have been discussing the merits or otherwise of a ‘staycation’, a relatively new concept born from the ashes of the Covid pandemic. As a natural born traveller, may be with Romany blood in my Irish veins, the notion of wandering through uncharted, unknown areas of Europe, South America or the Middle East fills me with joyous anticipation.

On the other hand, life in certain parts of Europe seems archaic in comparison with the United Kingdom. Many years ago, the Murphy family travelled to Romania for a holiday. Oh dear! Still under the control of President Ceausescu, this was the holiday to forget. I wonder how many of you have experienced similar disasters. The hotel was less than sanitary, and my youngest son lived on a diet of digestive

SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVING IS EASY

biscuits for two weeks, as the food was unpalatable. My wife was struck down with Dysentery and I am convinced that the only reason that I did not suffer a similar fate was my ‘ability’ to drink the local beer, costing 5 pence per pint and served in flower vases! A bright spot happened as we travelled to church on Sunday. A large mouse, with big ears, decided to walk to and from across the altar during Mass, much to the amusement of my children. At least the weather was good.

On the other hand, this may seem preferable to sitting in a caravan in Scotland, North Wales or Cornwall seeking shelter from thunderstorms. Only a few days ago, returning from Yorkshire, we were almost engulfed by torrential rain, causing water to rise through drains and changing the roads to rivers. Early in our marriage, we travelled to Cornwall, and were compelled to take shelter under a motorway bridge to seek refuge from torrential rain. Many a time we have tried to find shelter on beaches in Tenby or other areas. Happy Days!! Has this happened to you?

It seems that everything in our country

thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com

is about to change over the next few months. The General Election is in sight, with politicians clamouring for your support. My greatest wish is that whoever is in power repairs the potholes in our roads. Driving past new housing in the Mellor Area of the Ribble Valley, I am extremely disappointed with the enormous potholes in roads around the area. In certain major roads in Preston, travel has become a challenge, as some form of epidemic has caused a major infection to strike road surfaces. This will cause accidents, leading to even more chaos on our roads.

So, living in easy in Summertime – is it.

As the Murphys are travelling to Madeira soon for our holidays, who knows? Maybe some of the potholes may have been filled by the time we return.

Until the next time,

Take care,

Charles

GREENFINGER GUIDE

Well, with summer just around the corner, another busy month is planned to perfect our patches and enjoy our favourite pastime along the way!

At last the weather has improved of late, warm days and what a delight it is to walk in the garden each morning and see new growth, leaves so fresh and green, colour changing daily.

So my tips for the following weeks ;-

1. As the bulbs fade, lift and divide the overcrowded clumps of daffodils, irises, all primulas, cowslips, snowdrops and bluebells once the leaves start to yellow. The tulip bulbs need to be lifted and stored.

2. Lightly trim the evergreen hedges, making sure though no birds are nesting. Prune each stem individually on young hedging and only use shears if you have an established hedge.

3. Cut back the spring flowering perennials.

4. Prune the late spring shrubs after flowering, thinning out the older stems.

and pots, protect tender plants. Water plants daily in warm weather, ideally in the evening or early morning and avoid splashing the foliage. The container pots and hanging baskets will benefit from a weekly liquid feed, this will maintain regular growth and create beautiful blooms.

7. Most spring flowers will have come and gone, leaving gaps in the borders. If you want to add a splash of colour, you could add dahlias, so many varieties to choose or sunflowers, the epitome for the coming summer.

5. Continue to tie in the new stems of climbing plants to support and protect against winds and rain. Bamboo stakes and metal plant supports are ideal, flower rings for the more fragile plants.

6. Plant out summer bedding, do watch out for late frosts! Make sure they are hardened off before placing in borders

thecarrierpigeon.co.uk | infocpmag@gmail.com

8. If you have a pond, now is the time to add marginal plants, such as arum lilies and marsh marigolds around the edges.

9. Mow the lawn weekly.

10. Attracting the wildlife is so important, so the planting of lavender and honeysuckle, a quick grower will attract bees and butterflies will flock to a buddleia. Please also remember the birds, keep the bird station well stocked and providing fresh water daily will be well accepted.

Last but definitely not least, regularly hoe and pull the weeds!

Gardening is such a tonic, great exercise, lots of ‘steps’ accrued along the way and a beautiful display to behold.

What could be better, enjoy!

SAFEGUARDING YOUR LEGACY

The Crucial Role of Estate Planning and Professionally Drafted Wills

Estate planning is a critical aspect of preparing for the future, ensuring that your loved ones are protected, and your wishes are honoured when you are no longer able to make decisions.

Losing a loved one is an emotionally challenging experience and having to make important decisions regarding their affairs can intensify the distress.

Without a clear Will, family members may find themselves grappling with uncertainty and attempting to decipher the deceased’s wishes during an already emotionally fraught time. The absence of specific instructions can lead to disputes, prolonged legal processes and strained relationships.

One of the primary purposes of estate planning is to protect your loved ones

from unnecessary burdens and conflicts. A well-thought-out Will serves as a roadmap, guiding your family through the distribution of assets, guardianship arrangements for minors and other critical decisions.

By clearly outlining your intentions, you provide your family with a sense of direction and minimise the likelihood of disputes or disagreements.

Without a valid Will, the distribution of your assets will be subject to intestacy laws, which often dictate a default distribution plan that may not align with your wishes.

Through careful estate planning and a meticulously drafted Will, you retain control over how your assets are distributed, ensuring they go to the

individuals or causes that matter to you most.

In addition to a Will, Lasting Powers of Attorney play a crucial role in estate planning. These legal documents empower trusted individuals to make financial and healthcare decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated.

By appointing decision-makers in advance, you ensure that someone you trust is authorised to manage your affairs according to your wishes, sparing your loved ones from the burden of guesswork.

Don’t leave your legacy to chance. Create an estate plan that reflects your values and safeguards your family’s future. Contact our experienced private client team today for confidential and personal advice on 01254 268790.

CLOSER TO NATURE

Biomimetic materials that literally mimic nature, are revolutionising dentistry and here in the Ribble Valley, one forward-thinking practice is one of the leading pioneers of this technique

Always keeping ahead of the industry, leading private dental practice Renovo is one of the first practices in the UK that has fully adapted the very latest techniques that can successfully restore teeth by using materials that mimic nature and the natural tooth.

Biomimetic dentistry is revolutionising the way dentists can restore and repair teeth as

Dr Usman Riaz of Ribble Valley-based Renovo explains: “This is micro-invasive dentistry. We can preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible metal-free materials that act, feel and look just like our natural teeth.”

AVOIDING ROOT CANALS

“Biomimetic dentistry can help reduce your need for root canal therapy by up to 90 per cent. With immediate dentin sealing and resin coating, biomimetic dentistry gives pulps a vital chance to heal, helping maintain their natural resilience and extend their life. This is at the forefront of our core values,” adds Dr Riaz.

These latest advances in dental technology are set to change the way we view restorative dentistry. For teeth that have been damaged, porcelain crowns and veneers have, in the past, been the solution. However, more recent developments in bonding technology and the bio-materials used, have given dentists a new alternative, usually with no tooth removal.

PREDICTABLE OUTCOMES AND PAIN-FREE LONGERLASTING TEETH

Biomimetic restorations treat the causes of symptoms (cracks or caries near the pulp) so they do not result in sensitivity or pain after restoration: “Biomimetic techniques also restore the tooth in a way that mimics a tooth’s natural structure, preventing cracks around the restoration. Finally, the advanced adhesive techniques used in a biomimetic restoration have been shown to keep a restoration bonded for over 20 years, and counting, so the days of crowns or fillings falling out can be a thing of the past!”

These restorative materials that mimic nature, are not only perfect for aesthetically restoring teeth but they also help preserve and strengthen the natural tooth structure.

SCIENCE-BACKED DENTAL TREATMENT

Biomimetic dentistry is more technique sensitive and requires more detailed steps than traditional restorative practices. With Renovo’s approach, the dentists and the whole clinical team understand the science, or what we call the ‘why’ behind each step in their biomimetic restoration. The systematic steps

30

take the guesswork out of treatment planning, leaving clinicians and patients feeling confident in every restoration.

IMPROVED AESTHETICS

“Biomimetic dentistry is general dentistry and can be applied to every case we see at Renovo. The concepts of conserving tooth structure, saving pulps and superior adhesion will serve as a more predictable foundation of our work,” explains Dr Riaz.

“We can change, reshape and enhance teeth with these new materials. The biomimetic materials are also reinforcing teeth – it is a totally different concept to what we have seen previously.”

Adopting the latest biomimetic philosophies and having all the specialist techniques and materials available to them, the dentists at Renovo are pioneering in

their unique approach.

“Specialist techniques are used in biomimetic dentistry and the whole team have had advanced training,” says Dr Riaz. “For us, using non-invasive techniques and preserving teeth has always been something

WE GET OPTIMAL RESULTS WITH ZERO TOOTH REMOVAL AND THAT’S WHY THE BIOMIMETIC APPROACH IS SO POPULAR

we routinely believe in and practice, so biomimetic dentistry sits really well with that belief.

“It’s the way dentistry should be done –to save and conserve teeth has always been our gold standard.”

ZERO TOOTH LOSS MAXIMUM AESTHETICS

For nervous patients the biomimetic approach revolutionises the way they view a dental appointment: “For those people, this is an amazing development as the approach is to conserve tooth tissue using minimally invasive techniques. No anaesthetic is needed as there is zero tooth removal.”

While biomimetic dentistry can help to naturally strengthen and restore damaged teeth, it is also perfect for cosmetic procedures: “From a cosmetic point of view we can improve without having to compromise, which is a very powerful concept.

“With the latest biomimetic materials, we get incredible results and in many cases, it is much quicker too, as it often involves just one visit to the dentist.

“These treatment concepts and philosophy are popular in the US and Europe, but it has taken time to develop in the UK. We have had to understand the materials and perfect new techniques so we can carry out dentistry at a different level.”

HEALTHIER TEETH HEALTHIER YOU

By removing all toxicity and inflammation from the mouth, biological dentistry helps restore vitality, balance and systemic health.

“What we put in our mouth and more importantly, the teeth themselves, has a crucial role to play in our overall health. Gut health begins in the mouth. It’s more than just a gateway – it’s a mirror reflecting our overall health.” n

Years of experience, professionalism and competitive prices are the reasons why Broughton Roofing have developed into a trusted, reliable company across Lancashire.

From leaking flat roof repairs, pitch roof repairs to total replacement or just advice on which roof or guttering, Jamie and Kyle are happy to help.

Broughton Roofing was founded by Jamie who started learning his trade when he left school, working under his fathers guidance. Kyle started out as an apprentice for Jamie and is now a partner in the business.

"We specialise in covering flat roofs with synthetic rubber from

tyre giants Firestone. There are no joints to cause leaks as it is sold in single sheets big enough for most roofs. Firestone RubberCover has a 20-year material warranty but can last up to 50 years.

“If holed, it is easily repaired and needs little or no maintenance." says Kyle.

Jamie says: “As well as flat roofing installations and flat roof repairs we also supply and fit UPVC guttering, fascias and soffits, roof lights and lead work plus Velux window installation.

“We fit in around our customers’ lives. If you cannot see us until the evening, we will see you then.

“Nothing is too much trouble for us and if you need a job promptly, we are prepared to work seven days a week to deliver it on time.”

Customer Reviews

Barbara Milne-Redhead 5*

“The family met Michael with a view to discussing a house clearance. Michael then followed this up by a visit to the property, promptly sending clear details of costs and allowances for us to consider. Michael arrived on the arranged day and almost everything was cleared within two days. To say we were pleased, was an understatement. A trustworthy business, right on our doorstep.”

Linda Charlton - 5*

“Professional and first class service. Came to view the items of furniture, sent me a price which I was happy with and a mutually agreeable collection date was arranged. The whole transaction was easy and smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their service and would most definitely use again myself.”

Clive Thompson - 5*

“We had an urgent house clearance to do and we cannot fault the full attention we received from Michael and Tim who made the whole experience almost pleasurable! Many thanks for making it possible.”
