The Rose Red

Were off up lines

I am just a man from a Lancashire Town, Now listen to me and try not to frown.

I am one of just a few, who can’t refrain, On seeing a black pudding I have it to train.

We stand here proud of our rose of red, In days past this filled many men with dread.

They knew that red rose men fought with pride, So this made many of our foes run, and hide.

When we were young and care free We’d be off up lines to climb a tree.

I look fondly back at times when, We‘d Go up lines and made a den.

Why train a black pudding you may say?

But i ask you listen to my words i pray.

If black puddings escape without training They could run amok when it is raining.

For we had weapons of immense merit, It was of course our whippets, and our ferret!

Both were fierce, and oh so very strong, But their main weapon was how they ponged.

There weren’t tinternets for us to play This was many years before that day.

We maybe not have been that bright We’d roll in mud and play fight.

They would run riot in the town’s main street, out they would jump, and pounce on your feet.

Up your leg they in black skins would race Until they reached a very particular place.

With ferret, whippet, and black pudding in hand.

We would smite our enemies with a rubber band.

Then would ride roughshod with our clogs a thudding.

And cover them all with, STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING!

Not for us any games on PSP We were scruffy snotty and free.

We had to make all our own fun.

Like knocking on doors then run.

“We need more people to train the pudding black.

So come folks and join us give it a crack”

Start: Freckleton Village car park PR4 1PB close to the library.

Distance: 4 miles 6k, Time: 2 hours , Grade: Easy.

Directions Leaving the churchyard at the side gate leading into Trinity Close turn right onto Preston Old Road pass the Coach and Horses pub and keep ahead to a mini roundabout. Here turn right onto Naze Lane East. There now follows a road walk that takes you alongside Warton’s main runway and then as Stoney Lane turns south. Now on Bush Lane pass the end of Cherry Lane and follow the bend to the right signalling the start of Pool Lane. As this approaches the aerodrome buildings turn left at the next junction. The lane now downgraded to a track comes to an end at a stile leading onto the Lancashire Coastal Path.

Before you are the banks of the River Ribble. Cross the stile and turn left onto a path which can be muddy after prolonged spells of rain and follow it close to an embankment for a little over half a mile. After a stile a sign post points inland. Climb up the embankment to reach a large field. To the right there is a trig point perched above the confluence of the Ribble and

Freckleton Pool. This is Naze Point and it provides a fine view despite the fact it is just a few feet above the river level. Across the river is another confluence where the River Douglas enters the Ribble.

To the right of the Douglas lies Hesketh Out Marsh the RSPB’s newly created reserve; to the left of the Douglas lies Longton Marsh.

The way back to Freckleton is easy. With your back to the river aim for the far left corner of the field. Cross a stile into an enclosed path. After Naze Cottage on the right turn right and then left to follow he hedgerow on the right.

After a tall metal railings on the left bear right onto a drive that passes between buildings to take you through the boatyard.

300yds after the boatyard turn left to join Preston Old Road and the village centre.

BEES AND BUTTERFLIES Plants for Our native Bumble bees, honey bees and butterflies are all struggling to survive as their habitats change, so try adding some nectar and pollen-rich plants to your garden or containers to help provide them with food.

If you’ve got very limited space try growing Herbs – these are some of best plants for insects and you can also use them for cooking too. Try Rosemary, Marjoram, Oregano, Thyme – these all grow well in pots and troughs as long as you put them in a sunny spot and add sharp sand or gravel to the compost you use. Chives and Oregano grow well in the ground as well as pots. Mint flowers will also attract bees but keep these invasive herbs in a pot or they will take over your garden!

Early Flowering plants will help insects as they come

out of hibernation. Plant crocus, daffodil, primroses and Pulmonaria.

Dandelions provide plenty of early pollen, so let them flower but pull off the flower heads before they spread seeds everywhere.

These Hardy Annual flowers you can grow from seed now – Marigolds, Nasturtiums, Cornflowers, Poppies, Purple Tansy, Borage and Sunflowers. They also make beautiful cut flowers to bring inside.

If you’ve only got space for plants in pots try these small shrubs – Hebe (an evergreen shrub with masses or summer flowers – smaller varieties include ‘Heartbreaker’, ‘Red Edge’ and ‘Caledonia’), mini-Buddlejas

(look for the small varieties like Buddleja ‘Buzz’ or ‘Petit’), Lavender, Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, Daphne mezereum and Heathers (winter flowering).

Don’t forget the bees and butterflies at the end of the summer; grow these later flowering plants that will cheer up your garden as well as provide nectar – Rudbeckia, Sedum spectabile, Asters, Globe thistle.

Customers at the Traders Arms, Mellor, found themselves an unusual drinking partner recently when the pub received some VIP visitors.

The famous Thwaites Shire Horses visited the Mellor Lane pub to celebrate the recent £130,000 refurbishment.

The improvements have seen a total refurbishment both inside and outside the building, with a key new feature being the introduction of a games area, complete with pool table, dominoes and darts board.

Following feedback from customers, there are also changes to the menu, with more light bites and snacks, and the introduction of a new loyalty card to reward its customers.

On Saturday, April 30, the pub was re-opened by Dave McGuire, a regular at the Traders for over 18 years - he was given the honour after being voted for by staff and customers. The Thwaites Shire Horses also gave the refurbishment the seal of approval after stopping by to mark the official reopening.

Tenant Nigel Riley, who has been a licensee for over 30 years and at the Traders Arms for 9 months, said: "It's a great local pub in a fabulous area and it’s gone from strength to strength over the last 9 months – including achieving our first year cask mark and being runner-up in the pubs of bloom competition.

THE CATENIANS Whenever I am asked to write or to speak about the Catenians, I feel as if I am about to contravene the Official secrets Act. Why is this? Who exactly are the Catenians, and what do they do? Well , for those of you old enough to remember, we do not play for ‘Accrington Stanley’ !

First founded in the Manchester area in 1908, under the guidance of Bishop Casartelli of the Diocese of Salford, the Catenians are, in essence, a group of like mended Catholic men.

(Those of you still awake will have noticed by now the absence of the female gender – it was 1908 and the Suffragette movement had not yet arisen. Our excuse for 2016- good question!)

The original intention in the early days of the twentieth century was an attempt to counteract the anti- Catholic sentiment amongst the business sector, and to allow Catholics to take their ‘rightful’ place in the professional community. The word ‘rightful’ is worthy of comment – do you know that it is still considered to be against the law for a Catholic person to be King or Queen of ‘our’ nation.

Hence, groups , eventually recognised as ‘Circles ‘ developed across the country. Manchester was the first hence the title ‘Circle 1’ of the association – and Blackburn became the first Circle developed from outside a major city. We are, in fact, Circle 6 of the Association, and were founded in November 1910. Later this year we shall celebrate our 1250th monthly meeting. Within this area, or Province, we have Circles in Lytham, Garstang, Burnley, Accrington and Preston, to name but a few. There are also Circles in Australia, India and Zimbabwe.

The opening remarks about the Official Secrets Act are significant. There is an impression that the Catenians are the Catholic equivalent of the Freemasons. With the greatest respect to that organisation, nothing could be further from the truth. There is no doubt that it has taken over a century for the Catenian Association to become more public, and the present problems of traditional religions, in what is seen as an increasingly secularised society, may have created this effect. Like the Mole in ‘The Wind in the Willows’, we may find ourselves thrust more into the public spotlight.

So – If we are not good enough to play for ‘Accrington Stanley’ – and I hope they gain promotion, - then what do we do? For the past two years, I have been President of Blackburn, now Blackburn with Ribble Valley Catenian Circle. In that time we have tried to help young people in our parishes to carry out voluntary work in areas of need.

Last year we gave a grant to a 2nd year student at Durham University, who lived in Langho, to help her do some work with deprived children in Peru. In the previous year, we had awarded grants to a number of young people from Blackburn who were travelling to Lourdes with the Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust. The President of each Circle may choose a particular Charity which he wishes to support during his year of office.

Within our Province, we have attempted to organise a Public Speaking competition for all students attending courses at Catholic Sixth Form Colleges. Sadly, the uptake from those responsible for sixth Form education has been somewhat minimal. Nevertheless, hope springs eternal.

Before I continue any further, let me please correct a possible misapprehension – we are not a fund raising charitable organisation.

Indeed, our influence could be much more profound. If, like me, you are a regular church goer, you cannot have failed to notice two things. Priests are growing older and less in number, and the average age of the congregation is steadily increasing. So- Question – where have all the young ones gone? What can the Catenians do to help? Perhaps we can offer support to our clerics. We have many members. Can we take on the role as Parish accountants? We hear much of the increasing isolation of old people? Can we provide support? Can we counsel our young people through the mine field of modern life, and perhaps encourage simple values of respect for all?

Ultimately, we are all members of one family- we are here to help and support each other.

Finally, if I have not discouraged you completely, our association is about fun. There are regular Social events. Just last week my Circle had a magnificent Dinner Dance – much joy, much dancing and a fair amount of alcoholic refreshment. There are regular trips to Theatres and sporting events. In June we will have our Provincial Family Fun Day. ‘Nuff said!’ If you are a Catholic gentleman, over 18, why not give us a try. If you decide it is not for you- fair enough.Remember – If a person lives with acceptance and friendship, he/she will find love in the world.
