Inspirational, iconic and truly hilarious characters of Cardiff are not difficult to find and we’re excited to bring them to you, both online and offline.

To the people of Cardiff, thank you. Your stories, passions, and contributions continue to paint a captivating portrait of our dynamic city and it’s an honour for us to be the storytellers of your journeys. We extend our thanks to the contributors of this edition who bring a fresh perspective to this issue. Your voices, experiences and talents breathe additional life into our pages.

“Celebrating creativity, community & commerce in the capital” isn’t just a tagline; it’s a commitment. It’s a celebration of the artistry that adorns our streets, the tight-knit communities that flourish in our neighbourhoods and the businesses that drive our economy forward.

As we flip through these pages together, let’s relish in the stories of those who embody the very essence of our motto, because Cardiff Life Magazine is more than just a publication; it’s a shared experience that unites us all. Back To School You re never too old to go '

As we welcome in September, the summer draws to an end, children return to school and a new chapter begins. From an early age, we gain the ‘back to school’ mindset in September and it could be argued that this never leaves. September is the time to embark on new challenges and learn new things, old or young.

The classroom offers a unique dining experience with panoramic views across the city. The floor-to-ceiling glass dining room sits on the top floor of Cardiff and the Vale’s landmark £45 million City Centre Campus. Uniquely, the establishment is staffed by Michelin Star and AA rosette awarded staff, alongside budding Cardiff and Vale College students looking to hone their hospitality skills before heading into the industry.

Cardiff and Vale College has a reputation for equipping students with the skills needed to progress and succeed in their future careers. Many of the former talents at the college have gone on to work in top establishments, including 5 star hotels and Michelin and AA awarded restaurants across the region, UK and beyond. The host of talent at the restaurant is continually met with nothing shy of brilliant feedback. A previous customer has described the establishment as one “not to be missed” with “stunning food and outstanding service”.

Students work at The Classroom all year round except for the summer holidays. This unique course helps them learn practically by providing them with the essential skills needed and supports their personal development. The 35 week programme also allows workplace progress as students make advances up the NVQ Diploma levels. Students start as members of the team helping with the day-to-day runnings, eventually working their way up to work as trainee supervisors.

Not only does The Classroom equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to progress in their careers, but they also provide cookery lessons for the public. The one-off master classes and short courses offer an exciting opportunity where you can learn from their team of experts or visiting professionals. If you’ve always relied on ready meals and takeaways, then this one’s for you!

With FOR Cardiff WALLS CAN TALK

Not-for-profit business-led organisation, FOR Cardiff, has been enhancing experiences in our city since 2016. They deliver a number of projects to elevate life in the city as well as acting as a voice for a number of businesses. Recently, FOR Cardiff has launched an AI-powered historical trail, ‘Talking City Trail’. This immersive experience allows you to uncover Cardiff’s hidden history by scanning one of the QR codes scattered around the city. The educational trail highlights the city’s iconic landmarks, including Cardiff Castle, Betty Campbell, and the historic arcades. Despite the popularity of these sites, they hold years of untold secrets that you may never have otherwise uncovered. Along the trail, you can learn about the city’s multifaceted past, for example, The Prince of Wales pub is located on the grounds of an old church which was destroyed in 1607 when a huge wave engulfed the Bristol Channel. The flood in the capital of our very city is believed to be Britain’s worst natural disaster. Who would’ve known?

Learning the history of Cardiff gives you a greater appreciation of the city you live in. From the Victorian arcades to Cardiff Market, there is so much to uncover.

Talking City encourages people to delve deeper into the city’s hidden history, raises awareness of local businesses and allows you to “experience the places that make Cardiff unique”. The AI aspect of the trail marks a significant development in the city’s cultural offering. Using this technology means the ‘Talking City’ trail has the potential to adapt and grow in the future.

Understanding more about the city amplifies the connection between the individuals and our city. Ceri, the virtual tour guide, tells the story of Cardiff by “sharing facts, asking questions and sending pictures, audio and video of the specific locations through a two-way conversation”. The trail has two versions, one for children aged six to eleven and one for all ages above. The one-hour and nine-stop kids’ trail provides a succinct introduction to the history of Cardiff in a fun and interactive way. If you want to delve deeper into Cardiff’s history, the other trail offers further detail, ranging from medieval times to the present day. There are fourteen stops on this tour and with its AI element, boredom isn’t even in the question.

While this trail focuses on the history of Cardiff, FOR Cardiff focuses on the future of the city. This month, FOR Cardiff will reopen applications for the City Ambition Fund with an event at Browns Cardiff. September 28th will mark the launch of the Cardiff Women’s Safety Charter at City Hall, followed by a march through the city, aiming to shine a light on women’s safety. The organisation is also preparing to launch a never seen before Christmas experience in the city centre in partnership with ‘From the Fields’, so keep your eyes peeled!

The Power of Lifelong Learning CARDIFF & VALE TUTORS

Learning something new as an adult may feel daunting, but education is a privilege that shouldn’t be reserved solely for children and teenagers. The multi-awardwinning tutoring service, Cardiff and Vale Tutors, provides tuition for people of all ages and in all subjects. Being voted the leading private tuition provider in Cardiff for the past nine years, they create the ultimate safe space for learning.

Cardiff and Vale Tutors promises to provide affordable and accessible learning for all areas of Cardiff and the Vale, with a vision to help every child and adult to fulfil their full potential. Gaining new skills can help the mind feel stimulated, open up more career options and help improve your problem-solving skills. Stepping out of your comfort zone and throwing yourself into a new subject will, over time, also boost your confidence. Academic skills aren’t the only way to expand your knowledge. Learning a foreign language can help you feel more connected to the world around you, especially when travelling, as it helps to bring barriers down. You will no longer have to be ‘that British person’ who just speaks louder, perhaps with a slight French accent, in hopes of ordering their chips.

School is very important however, for some, it can be more challenging due to the structure and lack of singular focus. Cardiff and Vale Tutors offer the opportunity to shape your learning to what suits you best. The Cardiff and Vale Tutors owner and manager, Helen Glynn, explains “Personalised tuition leads to students feeling more motivated and engaged in their learning”. Cardiff and Vale Tutors offer the opportunity for learners to move at their own pace without feeling overwhelmed. Taking time on your learning will improve engagement, knowledge retention and the ability to apply your knowledge.

are you thinking about giving education another go?

Cardiff and Vale Tutors offer some friendly advice, which is to “Remember that you have gained a lot of transferable skills throughout your life and you’re not starting from scratch”. As adults, everyone’s life calendar is a little bit here, there and everywhere, so it’s essential to dedicate time to your independent study. This will help with exam preparation later down the road because, let’s face it, we’ve all felt underprepared and overwhelmed by an exam. Exams are often clustered together, with students finding it hard to concentrate. Following Helen’s advice along with the following advice from their blog; have a revision schedule, take quality breaks and look after your health, there will be no need to stress. You’ll be flying.

Their services range from KS1-3 right through to A-Level, with ESOL tuition available if English is your second language. Many adults also seek to further their knowledge in I.T. This can be delivered at a convenient time to work around your other commitments. Tutor sessions can be done online, in person, within a small group or one to one.

Thinking of heading back to school? Check out Cardiff Vale Tutors website for more information: www.cardiffvaletutors.co.uk/

Ice it up at

Vindico Arena

Whilst you may associate ice skating with Christmas, it’s certainly not a seasonal activity at the Vindico Arena. They welcome people of all ages, all year round, for you to fulfil your dream of being an ice princess/prince or just simply for some family fun.

Vindico Arena offers British Ice Skating Association approved courses for people of all ages and abilities. The lessons are booked in blocks of six, which include a 30 minute lesson each week, alongside skate hire. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, there’s a lesson for everyone. It’s best to be honest with yourself about your abilities, stick to the movements you’re comfortable with and don’t push yourself until you gain more confidence and experience throughout the lessons.

Learning new hobbies keeps us busy and stimulates the mind. Ice skating in particular offers a unique and enjoyable way to stay physically fit and promotes positive mental well-being. Ice skating can be likened to an art or a dance as it requires your presence, concentration and mindfulness, as well as lots of practice! When ice skating, you are more aware of yourself. Maintaining a rhythm while skating on the ice helps to soothe your mind and silence the noise, leaving you feeling mentally refreshed. Not only will it leave you feeling revived, it will have your heart racing and leave you aching the following day without realising it. Exercise without feeling like exercise? Yes please!

The lessons will prepare you for your ice skating journey however, brace yourself for a few bruises along the way. Ice skating is all about maintaining balance, which is easier said than done when trying to glide around ice effortlessly, gracefully and look up all at the same time! One piece of advice that has been echoed throughout ice rinks is to bend your knees and keep your head up. Easy right? You’ll have to find out for yourself!

More lessons are being released this month, so if you fancy yourself a new hobby check them out here: www.vindicoarena.com/

Women JIGSAW BUSINESS

For many years, business was considered a man’s world. However, strong-minded women are continuing to break through, rewriting this male dominated narrative and earning a well-deserved seat at the table. As countless women are forging successful career paths in the world of business, they are coming together in large numbers to empower, inspire, and learn from one another. Learning from kindred spirits within your industry and beyond can help to develop your business, expand your network, and change your mindset. No matter who you are, be it an experienced CEO or an emerging entrepreneur, the ability to learn from like-minded people is a privilege that should not be taken for granted.

Jigsaw Business Women is a not-for-profit group based in Pontypridd. Hayley Kneath, a financial advisor with SLD Wealth; Karen Howell, founder of Zebroid Marketing; and Helen CorsiCadmore, who established the retail brand Tiger, have recently collaborated to become the ongoing committee. These women are extremely successful in their fields and understand, from both a professional and personal standpoint, just how important learning from like-minded women can be. So, they are on a mission to ensure that businesswomen across South Wales have access to an educational network of inspiring and determined women. For the past twelve years, their organisation has brought the businesswomen of Wales together through open networking events, which include guest speakers and opportunities for one-to-one discussion.

For many people, the thought of walking into this kind of environment can be extremely daunting, which is why the volunteers behind Jigsaw Business Women pride themselves on the safe space that they have created. On the first Wednesday of each month, when members walk through the doors of Pontypridd’s USW Exchange, they will instantly be greeted by a host of friendly faces, eager to inspire and uplift each other. As a not-for-profit group, each year they support a different local charity and give a dedicated amount to the charity at the end of the year. Their next event will be held on September 6th, with all profits set to be donated to Welsh Women’s Aid, a charity working to put an end to all forms of violence against women.

At every stage in life, education is a key ingredient for success. The ability to learn is what helps every entrepreneur get their first foot in the door. But, it is the desire to expand upon pre-existing knowledge, and the willingness to step outside of comfort zones, that ensures real success in the world of business. Whilst many entrepreneurs may enrol on courses or read books to sharpen their skills, there is no denying that the best education comes straight from the source. From a professional standpoint, networking events – such as those hosted by Jigsaw Business Women – can really help to elevate your business to the next level. During these events, you will be surrounded by a wealth of wisdom just waiting to be explored. By liaising with like-minded professionals in this environment, you will begin to gain beneficial insights into business strategy from peers, whilst also nurturing connections that could benefit the future development of your business, through avenues such as collaborative work.

Additionally, networking can also help you to develop and grow personally. Networking enhances personal skills, such as self-confidence, and encourages a strong and empowered mindset; skills that are vital in all areas of life. Alongside its opportunities for open networking, Jigsaw Business Women invites a guest speaker to each event. Mwenya Chimba, head of training at Welsh Women’s Aid, will be speaking at their next event. By shining a spotlight on local charities at each event, members are encouraged to individually reflect on their position within society, learning how they can show compassion and understanding to those who need it most – a desirable trait both in business, and in life.

The members of Jigsaw Business Women thrive in this empowering and educational environment. Paula Hansen, a relatively new member, explains that her decision to join was “easy” thanks to the welcoming “room full of inspirational entrepreneurs, willing to share their experiences” with her. Jigsaw Business Women has created an environment which allows female entrepreneurs at all stages in life to inspire, uplift and empower both themselves and other women, proving that it is never too late to expand your network and learn some vital new business skills.

Jigsaw Business Women’s next event will be held at Pontypridd’s USW Exchange on September 6th. Guests can visit 2 meetings before deciding to join the network for just £40 per year. Bookings to attend can be made here: https://jigsawbusinesswomen.co.uk/

After completing degrees in pottery sculpture and fine art, Meg and Simon opened Peggy’s Pots, named after Meg’s nan, Peggy. They have a large array of ceramic Bisqueware, from mugs to plates, to picture frames and everything you can think of in between. All you have to do is turn up and paint; they will glaze and fire in their kiln. They offer a range of events for both kids and adults because, why should all the fun be left for the kids?

Cardiff’s only pottery painting business, Peggy’s Pots, hosts ‘Adult BYOB Evenings’, which are “some of their most fun-filled events”. The studio can seat up to sixteen adults, where you will have three hours of complete creative freedom. Choose what you want to paint and off you go! The workshop has a tool wall where you can choose from various sponges, stamps and other crafty tools and brushes that will help you bring your vision to life. Two weeks later, after your pottery has been fired and glazed, you can pick up your masterpiece and put it in pride of place in your home.

Customers often come in for art therapy, looking for a break from their fast-paced city life. Meg and Simon like to say “everyone is an artist”. Some people come in with little confidence in themselves but leave with their product, feeling proud of what they created. Simon and Meg are always on hand to dish out some handy tips and tricks or inspiring ideas if you’re in a creative rut. If you’re a newbie to the craft, they offer some handy advice, “Use shaped sponges to get perfectly symmetrical shapes and our wire tools to create petals for flowers or just super cool swirls”.

As you can imagine, Peggy’s Pots has seen some pretty wild pieces. Some of the more wholesome pieces are a ‘Fins of Anarchy’ penguin, an array of groovy mugs as part of their ‘Ugly Mug Workshop’ and even a whole tea party on a singular plate!

Peggy’s Pots provides the perfect environment to reconnect with old friends and new dates. If you want to start pottery painting but have no one to go with, attending may feel daunting but Meg and Simon urge you to take the plunge and come along! The community is welcoming and you’ll meet many friends along the way.

If this sounds like your idea of fun, why not take your hens there? The bride and her hens will all be given a glass of fizz on arrival and you’ll be given the chance to throw your own pot on the pottery wheel as well as decorate another pottery piece.

Thinking about going soon? Head over to their Instagram for some creative inspiration: @peggyspots

PWSH “creates radical and joyful public art in Cardiff that celebrates difference and re-imagines public spaces”. The project centres around inclusion whilst creating safe spaces for artists and other creatives. First brought to life in August 2021, the ever-evolving project has worked with fifteen local artists to date. PWSH creatives have breathed new life into the corners of the city centre, armed with their paint brushes and vibrant ideas.

The project enables Cardiff-based artists to decorate their city with artwork. This summer, a new cohort of artists have been working their magic at Aubergine Cafe, Womanby Street, Cardiff Indoor Market and a non-public mural at Llanishen High School. Rachel Kinchin, the artistic director, carefully curated the list of talent by selecting artists who have been in touch with PWSH, along with suggestions from the previous cohort. We spoke with Rachel about their latest, exciting project.

THE ARTS
All photography and background imagery by Raquel Garcia.

MEET THE ARTISTS

Matt Joyce created a mural at the back of Bar Revolution on Womanby Street. Matt’s mural combines a handful of themes, “losing yourself in nature, a love of plants, exploring, adventure and fun”. Outside of creating colourful murals, Matt is a freelance illustrator based in Cardiff. His signature style combines bold lines and bright colours with “humour and a playful aesthetic”. During his time with PWSH, Matt also worked with Nikolett Kovacas. Together, they created a mural for the students at the Hearing Impaired Resource Base at Llanishen High School.

Cardiff-based, award-winning international artist and designer, Sahar Saki, enjoys working in the form of mural art, with her current mural upstairs in Cardiff Indoor Market. Saki’s most recent mural draws inspiration from old Persian rugs, using Persian pattern design but in contemporary bold colours. Last year, Sahar held a mural festival to amplify the feminist movement in Iran, where she is originally from.

Multidisciplinary artist Regan, embraces “the playful, youthful spirit that resides within us all”. Her mural is “a young boy wielding a slingshot, evoking memories of a time when dreams knew no limits”. You can find her ‘Dream Bigger’ piece upstairs in Cardiff Indoor Market. Regan’s piece celebrates diversity and sheds light on the challenges of marginalised communities.

Queer Welsh artist and absurdist, Hunk Williams, explores pop culture and counterculture. Throughout his work, he draws on his experience growing up queer and autistic in the Valleys, as well as artist-style kitschy and camp icons of the past. Another thing Hunk often uses in his work is satire, as he feels it invites the public to ask, “But what does it all mean, like?”. Hunk’s mural in Aubergine Cafe “is an ode to long struggles now overcome, solidarity, freedom and good luck”.

Ren Wolfe explores how we can use “play and imagination to understand ourselves, our communities, and the world around us”. Her art draws inspiration from various things, from medieval illustrations to childhood memories, from costumes to puppetry. The mural in Aubergine Cafe explores “masking, imagination, and the relationship between the diversity in both the natural world and the human world”.

PWSH has also worked with two hearing impaired A-Level Art and Photography students, Hamzah Ahmed and Maisarah Bodor. The students supported PWSH artists and the creative team, helping install the murals and learning career skills such as project management and curation. PWSH aims to continue to amplify voices and drive social change through their murals, all while putting a smile on the faces of their fellow Cardiffians.

SOLO NETWORKING WITH CONFIDENCE

In this piece, I’ll be diving into the world of solo networking—a powerful tool that has been a game-changer for me and it could be for you too. As we embrace the theme of ‘You’re never too old for school,’ what better way to do that than by exploring how networking events can truly transform both our personal and professional growth?

Hosting networking events here in Cardiff has given me some incredible insights. I’ve learned a lot about the challenges faced by those who have attended my events solo and I’m excited to share some essential tips to make solo networking a breeze:

Before you even step into a networking event, take a moment to set your intentions and figure out what you’re hoping to achieve. Are you looking to find a new career path, searching for a mentor, or just eager to connect with people who share your interests? Having clear intentions will guide you and give you the confidence you need to make the most out of the event.

First impressions matter, right? So, take some time to create an elevator pitch. Introduce yourself making it quick and engaging. Let it reflect your skills, passions, and goals. And remember, you can tweak it depending on who you’re talking to. This will set you up for some meaningful conversations.

Let’s be real, networking is all about forming genuine connections. So, don’t be afraid to show your true self. When you’re open and honest, it encourages others to do the same. It’s the sense of trust that makes the interaction a good one.

Networking isn’t just about talking—it’s equally important to listen. Being a proactive listener means you must pay attention, ask thoughtful questions, and show that you’re genuinely interested in what others have to say.

If the idea of walking into a room full of strangers feels a bit overwhelming, you’re not alone. Start by connecting with smaller groups or even just one person. Find common ground, share ideas, and as you become more comfortable, you will naturally expand your connections.

After the event, make sure you don’t let those connections fizzle out. Hop on LinkedIn and send a personalised follow-up message, referencing your conversation and expressing your desire to stay connected. How about suggesting a coffee meetup or a virtual chat to continue the discussion?

Networking events aren’t just about making connections; they’re also fantastic opportunities to learn from others. Keep that eager learner’s mindset and stay open to new perspectives that can enrich your personal and professional journey.

Remember, networking is so much more than just swapping contact details. Aim to build a network of individuals who genuinely uplift and empower each other. Share your expertise, provide support, and offer encouragement—it’s a two-way street.

As we venture into the world of solo networking, remember that each connection you make is a chance for personal growth and empowerment. Embrace the challenge, knowing you have the opportunity to widen your outlook and build deep connections with remarkable people in our community.

Networking events are a continuous journey of learning, opening doors to endless possibilities and incredible lessons. So, when you step into that room, bring your purpose and authenticity. Let the world of networking benefit your life in ways you never imagined.

If you’re looking for a fantastic way to kickstart your networking journey or continue your pursuit of connections, I’ve got you covered at Fierce Femmes. The monthly events offer an inspiring, uplifting, and educational atmosphere, perfect for connecting with like-minded humans. Whether you’re flying solo or bringing along a friend, everyone is welcome to join.

BIG the interview

INTRODUCING L A U R A - J A N E

The rugby world cup is being held in the iconic Stade de France this year. Some of the biggest talents in the men’s game will take centre stage to compete, with countries across the world watching them on the edge of their seats. Known for her work both in front and behind the camera, Laura-Jane Jones has been working as a broadcaster for professional rugby for nearly fifteen years. She has a passion for sport and is a huge advocate for women’s sports. We were lucky enough to have a chat with Laura-Jane about her career and even managed to squeeze out her predictions for this year’s Rugby World Cup. With France on home soil, will they lead with victory? Where will Wales sit in this prestigious tournament? Let’s see what Laura-Jane forecasts.

You’ve built a successful career so far... but how did you get started?

“I actually started here in the capital. I went to Cardiff Rugby after I finished school for a week’s work experience and hung around for another 3 years. I loved my time there. The club I’d grown up supporting whilst I was there, the Blues, won the Anglo-Welsh Cup, gained a place in the Heineken Cup Semi-Final and won the Challenge Cup for the first time, so it was really special to be there for all of that.

After I graduated, I left Cardiff to pursue a TV career and was very lucky to land a job at Sky Sports. For just shy of a decade, I learnt how to make TV there, got to stand on the sidelines for some pretty cool games and made amazing friends. I left and went freelance in 2017 and haven’t looked back. Since striking out on my own, I’ve worked for every major broadcaster in the UK and travelled the world.”

Since starting out, how have you noticed attitudes to women in rugby changing over the years?

“I’m not sure about changing, I’ve certainly always felt very welcome in our sport, but there’s certainly more room for women and I think that’s the key. When I started out, sometimes it felt like women being there was tokenism, that’s definitely changed. I still don’t think we have total parity, but it’s definitely got and continues to get better.

Last year I covered the Women’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand for ITV which was immense. Women on and off the pitch owning their place. What makes me even more excited and hopeful is that at the men’s RWC this year, there’ll be plenty of women working there too.”

the big interview Cardiff Life | Page 26
J O N E S
Laura-Jane Jones at the European Rugby Champions Cup Final

More women at the Rugby World Cup this year, does that mean you’ll be there too?

“Yes, definitely. I’ve got a couple of exciting gigs across the tournament which you’ll have to keep an eye out for. I’m really delighted that so many women I know and love are working on the tournament as commentators, presenters and reporters, but also in administrative roles and rugby support roles. I’m especially excited that my great friend, Joy Neville, will be the first woman to officiate at a men’s Rugby World Cup. She’ll be a Television Match Official at the tournament. I definitely think this Rugby World Cup is going to look and feel different to those that have come before!”

This is interesting! What makes you think this?

“Well, I feel like sport is moving and evolving all the time, but over the last couple of years, maybe since the pandemic, the human side of sport feels like it’s really coming to the forefront of things. Sports docs like ’The Last Dance’ and ‘Quarterback’ on Netflix have shown that people are really interested in the athletes as well as the sport. I think that’s carried through to social media and athletes are embracing their newfound platform.

Rugby is changing too. For the first time ever we’re seeing names on the backs of jerseys for players. I really believe this Rugby World Cup will give us a new star who transcends the sport like the great Jonah Lomu did in 1995. Just don’t ask me who I think that individual will be!”

Before we let you go to get packed for France, what are your World Cup predictions?

“Hahaha... this is where I can make myself look like the oracle or really clueless, isn’t it? I think this young Welsh side has shades of 2011 and they’ll top their group, as we all know anything can happen when you get to the knockout stages. If I have to put my money where my mouth is, we’ve put all the focus on France and Ireland up until now, but I think my nailed on finalists are the All Blacks from what we’ve seen this summer.

... but who knows, maybe Portugal might shock us all?”

After a climate emergency was declared in 2019, the businesses of Cardiff have been paving the way towards a greener future. From original local business plans, to groundbreaking national developments, here are some of the ways that Cardiff’s businesses are combatting climate change.

An Eco-Friendly Approach to Travel

Transport for Wales have revealed plans to bring trams to South Wales in 2024. In a bid to ensure a greener transport network across Wales, the new Metro system will consist of electric trams which can travel on both electric railway tracks and on newly installed tram rails in the streets.

Not only will these trams bring an element of excitement to the daily commute, but they will also offer an eco-friendly approach to travel. The trams will increase connectivity between locations, whilst also tackling the issues of road congestion and carbon emissions that can arise when taking other, more traditional modes of transport.

Zero Waste Shops

Siop Sero, in Rhiwbina offers an innovative zero-waste shopping experience. The walls of this not-forprofit store are lined with enticing and essential fresh produce – from loose leaf teas, to fresh chilli oils, from grains and granola, to pasta and rice. This shop is on a mission to reduce single use plastic, so, to purchase any goods, you should bring in your own reusable containers, fill them up with whatever your heart desires, and pay for your produce. It’s as simple as that! Alongside refillable groceries, Siop Sero also stocks ethical local products, such as soy candles, bamboo towels and toothbrushes, and plastic free razors. You name it, they have it. So, next time you find yourself heading to the shops, why not try this plastic free alternative?

Cardif Cargo Bikes is an independent Splott based business, encouraging the people of Cardiff to embrace the outdoors through an innovative, urban and eco mode of transport. Complete with an electric motor and sturdy frame, a cargo bike offers a sustainable way to transport people and goods across the city. Cardif Cargo Bikes prides itself on offering eco solutions to many of the environment al issues that often arise in cities. A sustainable alternative to a car, a cargo bike will allow you to get all of your jobs done whilst reducing road congestion and pollution levels, and keeping the city’s outdoor spaces clean. For residents, Cardif Cargo Bikes has a variety of bikes available to buy. For businesses – thanks to support from FOR Cardiff – cargo bikes are also available to hire to suit your needs.

Sustainable Solutions to Everyday Chores

Wash Cycle is an independent laundry delivery service, offering an eco-friendly way to complete one of your everyday chores. Currently operating in a five-mile radius from Cathays, they cycle to your door to pick up your washing, with an option to return it back to you that very same day. With a passion for the environment at the core of their business, Wash Cycle uses eco-friendly methods to do your laundry, such as machines with low electrical usage, reusable washing bags, and sustainable detergent choices Additionally, their partnership with Ecologi means that a tree is planted every time their service is used. This offsets any impact that they may have on carbon emissions, keeping their business as eco-friendly as possible. So far, Wash Cycle and Ecologi have planted over 11,000 trees. With the hard work and tireless efforts of these businesses, it is safe to say that Cardiff’s future is looking greener every day.

Mas Gyda’r Hen... Mewn Gyda’r Henach THE WELSH EDIT

“Y dillad mwyaf cynaliadwy yw’r dillad y rydych yn berchen arno yn barod”.

Gyda dim ond dros fis ar ôl o’r haf (...neu ddylai dweud ‘haf’), mae’r amser wedi cyrraedd i ni gyd ddechrau meddwl am gynllunio ein wardrob hydrefol! Ond, nid hyn yw eich esgus i redeg mewn i Ganolfan Dewi Sant gyda’ch cerdyn credid a phrynu pob un siwmper, het a menig o bob lliw’r enfys. Na! Blwyddyn yma, dwi’n eich annog chi i droi’ch wardrob yn fwy gwyrdd – nid yn llythrennol...dwi’n sôn am gynaliadwyedd.

Braidd fel Selena a Hailey, nid yw’r diwydiant ffasiwn a chynaliadwyedd ‘di cael perthynas da efo’i gilydd dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf. Heddiw, rydym yn fwy ymwybodol nag erioed o’r effeithiau niweidiol y mae’r diwydiant ffasiwn, gan gynnwys siopau’r stryd fawr a’r diwydiant ffasiwn gyflym ar-lein yn cael ar yr amgylchedd ecolegol a gweithwyr y sector. Mae’n bwysig felly ein bod ni gyd yn gwneud pob ymdrech i wneud penderfyniadau mwy cynaliadwy yn ystod y cyfnod rhwng-tymhorol hwn. Ond lle i ddechrau? Gyda’n cyngor i, wrth gwrs! Os ddilynwch chi fy nghanllaw cynaliadwy, bydd eich owtffits hydrefol nid yn unig yn edrych yn hollol anhygoel, ond fe allwch chi gynheilio ar hyd strydoedd Caerdydd gan wybod eich bod chi’n helpu’r blaned, a’ch pwrs yn yr hirdymor.

Felly, sut mae mynd ati i greu wardrob hydrefol mewn modd cynaliadwy? Mae’r cyfnod rhwng-tymhorol yma yn amser gwych i ddechrau cynllunio eich wardrob ar gyfer y tymor newydd. Mae’n werth treulio amser i feddwl am be yn union hoffech chi i’ch wardrob edrych fel, gan feddwl am steil, deunyddiau, lliwiau, silwetau ac eitemau hanfodol - dyma eich cyfle chi i gael bach o hwyl yn arbrofi a thrio pethau newydd. Ond ceisiwch osgoi prynu o’r newydd – nid yw hwnna’n gynaliadwy neu’n fforddiadwy o lawer. Y dillad mwyaf cynaliadwy yw’r dillad y rydych yn berchen arno yn barod, felly edrychwch i weld be sydd gyda’ch chi’n barod y gallwch chi gario drosodd i’ch wardrob hydrefol. Does dim byd yn bod gyda gwisgo hen ddillad!

Cofiwch, pryd mae’n oer yng Nghaerdydd, mae’n oer(!), felly bydd angen digonedd o haenau arnoch chi o fis Medi ymlaen. Haenwch eich ffrogiau slip gyda siwmper neu gardigan drwchus, bar o deits a phâr o fŵts i greu gwisg hydrefol hawdd a ffasiynol. Mae crysau-T a thopiau dilawes hefyd yn berffaith ar gyfer haenu yn ystod y gaeaf i ychwanegu ychydig o gynhesrwydd o dan eich siwmperi.

Ond os ydych chi’n teimlo fel bod rhaid i chi brynu eitemau newydd wrth adeiladu eich wardrob, beth am geisio prynu pethau’n ail-law?

O Fflamingos yng Nghanolfan Siopa Capitol, i Hobos yn Arcêd y Stryd Fawr, mae yna ddigonedd o ddewis o siopau vintage, ail-law ac elusennol yn y Brifddinas. Y mae’r math o siopau yma yn wych os ydych chi’n edrych am eitemau unigryw, fyddwch chi ddim yn gweld ar unrhyw un arall.

Ond, dylech chi ond brynu eitemau sy’n galluogi chi i gyfun-cydwedd gyda’ch dillad presennol! Ar yr un nodyn, peidiwch daflu ddilledyn a allai cael ei atgyweirio. Siwmper gyda bach o dwll ynddo? Peidiwch fynd yn syth at brynu un newydd yn ei le. Ewch yn lle i siop sy’n gallu atgyweirio ac addasu’r dillad, mae hyn hyd yn oed yn fwy cynaliadwy, fel arfer llawer yn rhatach ac yn gallu safio chi’r amser o geisio dod o hyd o siwmper debyg. Ideal! Os nad yw’r math yma o siopau at ddant chi, neu os ydych chi’n cael trafferth yn dod o hyd i’r hyn rydych chi’n chwilio amdano ac yn ffeindio eich hunain nôl yng nghanol Canolfan Dewi Saint, ceisiwch brynu eitemau newydd sydd o’r ansawdd uchaf.

Gall hwn fod naill gwmni dylunydd neu gwmni sydd yn arbenigo mewn dillad mwy cynaliadwy a foesol. Er gall hyn costio’n fwy, ceisiwch feddwl am y trafod fel buddsoddiad. Efallai bydd tolc yn eich pwrs yn y tymor byr, ond fydd ansawdd uwch yr eitem yn arwain at oes hirach i’r dilledyn, sy’n golygu y gallwch chi wisgo tro ar ôl tro am flynyddoedd i ddod, sy’n llawer gwell i’ch balans banc yn yr hirdymor.

Fy nhip olaf. Unwaith eich bod chi’n teimlo fel eich bod chi wedi creu eich wardrob hydrefol berffaith, y peth olaf i wneud yw dysgu shwt mae gofalu am eich dillad. Galwch fi’n ddiflas, ond dwi wrth fy modd yn darllen y label gofal mewnol dilledyn – ie, dwi wirioneddol yn gwneud hwn! I sicrhau

Ar ôl syrthio mewn cariad â’r grefft o berfformio yn ifanc, dechreuodd Tom weithio’n broffesiynol fel actor gyda chredydau gan gynnwys Frankie (BBC), Broadchurch (ITV), Trollied (Sky) a Da Vinci’s Demons (Starz a Fox). Yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf, mae Tom wedi cyflwyno ar gyfer S4C a’u platfform digidol Hansh, yn arbennig fel golygydd dylunio mewnol ar gyfer Prynhawn Da ac yn fuan bydd yn perfformio mewn sioe gerdd Gymraeg newydd. Wrth ganolbwyntio ar gynaliadwyedd o fewn y diwydiannau ffasiwn a manwerthu yn ystod brifysgol, yn 2019, ef oedd y person cyntaf i adrodd ar y cysyniad o eco-bryder drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg.

Tom Kemp, a South-Wales based creative freelance was originally born in Pontypridd. After falling in love with the art of performing at a young age, Tom quickly began working professionally as an actor with credits including Frankie (BBC), Broadchurch (ITV), Trollied (Sky) and Da Vinci’s Demons (Starz and Fox). In more recent years, Tom has presented for S4C and their digital platform Hansh, notably as an interior design editor for Prynhawn Da and is soon to perform in a new Welsh-language musical. His voice maybe familiar to the Welsh speaking community of South Wales, from co-presenting a Sunday night radio show for two years. For many years, sustainability has been at the heart of Tom’s work. Whilst focusing on sustainability within the fashion and retail industries during university, in 2019, he was the first person to report on the concept of eco-anxiety through the medium of Welsh.

SAVOURING SUMMER

BY PIA GIZZI

Mountain Yoga offers indoor and outdoor classes to help you savour the remaining summer days. The idyllic space has views of the prominent Garth Mountain, giving you time to switch off and fully escape the noise of the city. There are four locations to practice yoga on the site, including the open-view studio where the majority of the classes take place. The whole glass front opens up, offering fresh air and peace throughout your class. There’s a decking outside for those warmer days, to help you feel at one with your surroundings. The waterfall platforms offer a unique peaceful experience, expect, birds tweeting and water rushing. Their fourth and final area, the hillside platforms, offers a completely open setting and, with that, a feeling of freedom.

They offer multiple classes throughout the week, with various yoga practices. Feeling low on energy? No worries, Mountain Yoga offers wellbeing retreats that give you a chance to take some time to recharge and rejuvenate. Hold onto the last of summer by getting your sweat on surrounded by rolling hills and verdant trees. Experience a sound bath where you are bathed in sound waves, helping you release any stress you’ve been holding onto. Improve your quality of sleep and overall happiness with each pose. Let yourself relax by learning meditative practices, watching the sunset as you sip on a hot chocolate and learn the art of breathwork.

Acknowledging your presence can be a healing and regenerative experience. The act of practising meditation and yoga, whether it be a few minutes or hours, can help renew your sense of spirituality and emotional balance, leaving you with a fresh sense of clarity and sparking energy that may have previously been buried. So, if you’re taking our advice and heading ‘back to school’, this retreat may be the perfect way for you to unwind.

Yoga-goers have hailed Mountain Yoga instructors as “brilliant and very supportive” and say the classes are “taking us back to the meaning of true wellbeing and health”. Escaping the stresses of life can only be positive, especially in this leafy setting. The indoor-outdoor setting is perfect for welcoming in autumn, giving you the option as to where you practice.

Looking for a new innovative way to team build with your colleagues? Good news, Mountain Yoga also offers the opportunity to work with organisations with the mission of boosting staff wellbeing. M u s e u m St Fagans

St Fagans Museum has held a special place in Welsh hearts for many years. The free government-funded museum offers an insight into how the people of Wales, past, present and future, lived. The museum is on the grounds of St Fagans Castle, a Tudor manor house gifted by the Earl of Plymouth in 1948, along with 18 acres of lush grounds.

In a radical move, the museum was the UK’s first national open-air museum, reflecting the day-to-day life of an ordinary person of the past. The idea behind St Fagans Museum isn’t to preserve the dead, but to bridge the gap between past and present, providing a foundation for learning.

Welsh arts and culture blogger Claire Miles, better known by her Instagram handle, ‘@hisdoryan’, brands St Fagans Museum as the ultimate day out. “With over 40 historic buildings representing so many aspects of Wales’ history, you can easily spend the whole day there”. The museum offers a unique opportunity for people as the open-air museum can provide a day out to remember, whatever the weather.

Claire suggests taking a picnic to the gardens and “retreating to the beautiful historic gardens surrounding the castle”. Claire then proposes a look around the galleries, where you can continue to explore Wales throughout history. You can time-travel back 230,000 years by looking at a Neanderthal boy who once called Wales home. “The interactive ‘Life Is...’ gallery is great for the little ones, where they can ride a vintage tractor and play the piano”.

St Fagans Museum offers an all-weather experience, so if the heavens open and a picnic is no longer on the cards, there are plenty of options. The site is home to a handful of cafés, utilising Welsh produce, where you can head when all that history has you feeling peckish. You can drop into PysgOdyn to enjoy beer battered fish and chips served in a traditional cone, or cosy up in the Gwalia Tea Room to savour some afternoon tea delights, all served on vintage crockery of course!

These grounds are frozen in time and offer a fascinating glimpse into Welsh history, whatever the weather. For more information: www.museum.wales/stfagans/ Photography by: @hisdoryan

OUTDOOR

The UK’s biggest outdoor cinema tour, Adventure Cinema, brings an experience like no other to Cardiff. On the outskirts of our city, you’ll discover a collection of botanical gardens with an estate that dates back to 640 AD. You’ve guessed it, Dyffryn Gardens. Over September’s second weekend, you’ll find an outdoor cinema for three nights, showcasing a collection of your all-time favourites; Dirty Dancing, Top Gun: Maverick and Grease.

Before the air starts to crisp up, leaves fall off the trees and summer fades away, we should embrace our beautiful surroundings and take part in some outdoor activities. What’s better than watching cinematic classics under the stars? The rise in popularity of the outdoor cinema experience is evident. The cinematic experience reminds us of a time when people would head down to drive-in cinemas, or at least the romantic experience we see in films! Being surrounded by nature definitely adds to the ambience.

CINEMA

The opportunity to be completely submerged in nature is one that we shouldn’t pass up on. As our day-to-day lives are growing ever more preoccupied, we have to take a breather. Nature is a holistic way to help our minds; taking part in an activity that is typically enjoyed inside can help clear your mind and escape dayto-day worries. The fresh air of the open-air cinema will leave you feeling relaxed and is a great excuse to unwind with loved ones, be that friends, family or a partner.

What would the cinema be without snacks? Be sure to remember your favourite snacks and maybe a bottle of wine to share. Should you forget, there’s a huge choice of snacks and drinks available at the venue. All you need to do is lay down your picnic blanket or set up your camping chairs and you’ll be set. Doors open a couple of hours before, so you can bring cards or a couple of other games to play and really make an evening of it, savouring the last of the summer.

Savour your summer with an outdoor cinema experience. For more information: www.adventurecinema.co.uk/

FARM PARK FAMILY FUN

Set in the rolling countryside between Cardiff and Newport, Cefn Mably Farm Park began in 1994 in a small field with just a few rescue animals. Over the years, the park has grown and become well known as the all-weather family attraction in South Wales. Come rain or shine, Cefn Mably Farm Park has you covered.

Whether you fancy a round of crazy golf, feeding the animals or riding the train around the grounds, there’s no shortage of fun activities. The park is also now home to the biggest soft play in South Wales, perfect for little ones with bags of energy to burn off.

For all the animal lovers out there, Cefn Mably Farm is home to a large variety of friendly farm animals that are available for you to meet and interact with at any time of the year. The animals range from long-necked alpacas to hardy goats, to cloud-like sheep and friendly donkeys, alongside every farm animal in between. So, don’t forget to purchase some animal feed!

The perfect day at Cefn Mably Farm begins as you enter the indoor play barn where the children can run themselves wild and everyone else can relax with a cup of coffee and a homemade slice of cake. When the kids finally come down for a rest, it’s time to feed the array of farm animals that are grazing on the farmland, play on the diggers and unleash your competitive side by playing crazy golf on the outdoor course. Before you go, it’s imperative to ride the train around the park and wave goodbye until next time!

Rogue Welsh Cakes

Llanishen welcomes the popular and family-run business, Rogue Welsh Cakes, with open ams. Their new cafe on Llangranog Road serves an assortment of “Welsh cakes with a twist”, ranging from cheese and leek to chocolate orange. Established in 2020 with a fanbase that stretches as far as Australia, the Welsh cakes are adored by all. Although established in 2020, the idea of Rogue Welsh Cakes was conjured up in the ‘90s when a mum of two had the idea of replacing Welsh cake currants for sweet chocolate chips. Rouge Welsh Cakes have taken these traditional ‘cakes’ to the next level with their hot Welsh cake stacks, served with a scoop of ice cream. To try these groovy Welsh cakes, head down to 13 Llangranog Road

Llanishen Reservoir

Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoir has reopened after a 23-year battle. Once a water supply reservoir, now the perfect hotspot for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. The reservoir is set on 110 acres of green and blue space and is home to fantastic wildlife, offering an oasis from bustling city life. The space aims to maximise public access whilst protecting the site’s ecological importance, striving to create an area where people can reconnect with their local environment. Surrounded by nature, you’re not short of activities at the reservoir, whether you want to walk to reconnect with nature or take to the water in one of the many activities available. The reservoir will soon offer sailing, but currently, it provides open-water swimming, stand up paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking, as well as a cafe where you can warm up post-swim.

Poca

The residents of Canton and Pontcanna welcome Poca. Expect an informal, relaxed dining environment, as Poca is heralded as a “friendly neighbourhood restaurant”. The menu focuses on simple ingredients of the highest quality, compiled into seasonal small plates, which can be enjoyed with an array of handpicked wines and cocktails.

Their à la carte menu is split into five sections; morsels, charcuterie, fish, meat and vegetables and dairy, alongside a large sharing plate. There’s a separate menu when dining on a Sunday so you can enjoy a humble roast without being too far from home.

If you haven’t tried their small plates, book a table here: www.pocarestaurant.co.uk/

Outpost Bar and Kitchen

Pontcanna’s New-York inspired bar and kitchen in the new Laundry Quarter development is set to serve food and drink from breakfast right through until 5pm, as well as serving small plates every Thursday and Saturday evening. Outpost will also house a private dining room that can double up as a meeting room for local businesses.

Their New York influenced style draws inspiration from when Nick Saunders’ (owner) partner spent time in the city of New York. They have fond memories of hanging out at the bars and restaurants in Williamsburg and Brooklyn, so have used a mix of seating levels, bold colours and textures against an urban backdrop to bring the NY vibe to Pontcanna. One thing is for certain, you’ll definitely save money on flights for this trip to New York.

Wales’ first supercar cafe opened this year, with a bright pink McLaren taking centre stage. The idea behind the cafe is that people with a passion for supercars can come together as a community.

Icreated the Cardiff Wine Passport with the objective of supporting and highlighting the diverse array of independent hospitality businesses in our capital’s city centre. The concept is super simple; you buy a passport online, then exchange passport stamps for glasses of wine at a curated selection of indie restaurants – and an optional food pairing can also be added at each stop. The scheme is live until the end of September, so if you want to get involved and grab a passport, there’s still time!

At Curado Bar, their wine choice was a delicious glass of Senorio de Rubios Albariño – it’s dry and crisp with lemon and refreshing peach notes with great acidity.

Their food pairing to match was a freshly fried plate of calamari, a wedge of lemon and a pot of lip-smacking garlic aioli. If you’d like to try recreating your passport paring at home, I managed to get the Curado team to share their reassuringly simple method with me.

RECIPE: Curado Bar s Calamares a la Romana '

With a crisp glass of Albariño on the side!

400g calamari rings*

100g frying flour

1 whole lemon, wedged Salt & pepper, to taste

1 x tub of Chovi Aoli

*Look out for handline caught squid, as this method is low impact, selective and sustainable.

T H E

M E T H O D

Dust the squid rings in frying flour and season with salt and pepper. Shallow fry the dusted squid until the flour is crispy, being careful not to overcook them – it doesn’t take long! Serve with a dollop of Chovi Alioli, sprinkle of sea salt and a big wedge of lemon. Squeeze this over the dish before tucking in. Pair with a glass of Senorio de Rubios Albariño and enjoy. Cheers!

Both the Chovi Aoli and the Senorio de Rubios Albariño recommended in this recipe are available to take away from the in-house deli at Curado Bar on Guildhall Place, or to buy directly from the Spanish Wines warehouse on Penarth Road.

WELCOME TO SIX By Nico

Last month, we headed down to Six by Nico, situated on Cardiff’s High Street, to embark on a journey through time, spaces and places by way of a carefully curated six-course tasting menu. Visionary Chef Nico Simone is devoted to providing affordability without compromising quality, inventiveness or flavour. With six courses for £39pp and a matching wine option for an additional £30pp, we can certainly vouch for that!

With Nico himself on the pass to see the team into a night of success, we knew we were in for a treat. The staff were able to reel off the ingredients of each dish upon service and had the incredible wine knowledge to match. Our ‘Chippie’ experience, featuring re-imagined chip shop classics, certainly was a taste bud tantaliser.

Six by Nico’s interior takes inspiration from both the dragonfly insect and our city of Cardiff. The awe-inspiring decor encapsulates the essence of Cardiff through its discreet references to Cardiff Castle and our beloved Cardiff Market, incorporating our iconic arches into its design. The notes of deep green and wing-like adornments throughout truly embody the dragonfly. If you look carefully, you can also see Chef Nico’s Scottish-Italian heritage throughout the restaurant’s interior.

You have until September 24th to get your hands on ‘The Chippie’... if there’s any space left! To book your table or be the first to find out about their 6-course theme week commencing September 4th, head to: https://www.sixbynico.co.uk/cardiff/booking/

Commitment to Net-Zero: Coal House

in the heart of Cardiff, a remarkable transformation has taken place that is setting new standards for sustainable luxury and redefining the way we view office spaces. Designed purposefully to meet the needs of businesses seeking space for between 25 and 75 people, but able to accommodate up to 300 people, Coal House, a beacon of innovation and environmental consciousness, is set to revolutionise the office experience within the city. The Coal House is not just a building; it’s a testament to Cardiff’s commitment to a greener, more connected future.

Sustainability at the Core

At The Coal House, sustainability isn’t an afterthought – it’s woven into every facet of the building’s design and operation. Powered entirely by renewable energy sources, the building epitomises energy efficiency, boasting net zero carbon (in operation) and an EPC A. Their commitment to sustainability extends to water and waste management, with low-flow water appliances and a zero-to-landfill waste strategy that showcases a holistic approach to resource conservation.

It doesn’t stop there! Equipped with eight electric vehicle charging points and grab-and-go community bikes for use by the on-site community, Coal House encourages sustainable travel in the city too. There is generous secure cycle storage and car parking, showers and changing facilities, as well as a DIY bike maintenance station where bike users and visiting technicians can carry out repairs and servicing. So, there really is no excuse not to trade the car keys in and dig out your wheels!

Innovation for a Connected Future

Innovative technology pulses through every inch of The Coal House. Its WiredScore Platinum aims to deliver seamless internet access through plug-and-play fibre optic broadband, backed by a secondary line and a third Starlink connection for unparalleled data resilience. Smart sensors, scattered throughout the shared spaces, monitor and manage air quality, energy consumption, temperature, and occupancy, contributing to significant energy and cost savings.

The heart of this synergy lies in the building’s management system, which adapts instantly to changing conditions, optimising well-being and productivity. Real-time data empowers occupants to make informed choices, while the CoalHouse. Life app acts as a gateway to intelligent building features and digital access, simplifying entry and visitor management. Banging your head against the broken office buzzer is no more!

A Haven of Comfort and Convenience

The Coal House goes above and beyond when combining convenience, comfort and well-being. Biophilic design elements infuse shared spaces with a sense of tranquillity and creativity, marrying natural aesthetics with sustainable materials such as bamboo and eco-engineered timber. A vibrant events calendar fosters community interaction, and a speciality coffee and juice bar indulges residents while supporting local charities. The dedicated concierge team, accessible via the app, ensures a seamless experience, from dry cleaning to daily food deliveries provided by Cardiffbased The Tidy Kitchen Co. Can it get any better than that?!

Accolades and Beyond

The Coal House’s devotion to well-being goes beyond its walls, with esteemed accreditations including Fitwell, BREEAM Excellent, and AirRated Platinum. These certifications underscore the building’s status as a pioneer of sustainable luxury, setting a new standard for eco-conscious design and operation. It is truly impressive; be warned when visiting, you won’t want to leave! A once-dated office building, Coal House now stands as one of Wales’ most sustainable offices. Its transformation speaks volumes about the possibilities of retrofitting and carbon-neutral operation.

As it aligns with UK Green Building Council net zero carbon standards, Coal House provides a blueprint for developers and property funds to follow, demonstrating that environmentallyconscious choices can be both impactful, commercially viable, and thoroughly enjoyable! The story of Coal House isn’t just about architecture; it’s a narrative of Cardiff’s journey towards a more sustainable, connected, and communitydriven future. Cardiff WORKS

Shakira Obaid is the Commercial Director of the Oldwalls Collection, an array of award-winning luxury Welsh wedding venues. Renowned wedding specialists, Oldwalls Collection has been at the helm of the wedding industry since 2008. They offer three of Wales’ most jaw-dropping wedding venues, Oldwalls Gower, Fairyhill and Sant Ffraed House.

From an aspiring journalist to redundancy, to then landing a position as Commercial Director at Oldwalls collection, Shakira spills all about her career and its progression.

MEET Shakira Obaid THE COMMERCIAL

DIRECTOR OF THE

the Oldwalls

COLLECTION

Shakira has always had a love for the media industry and from a young age, aspired to have a career in journalism. Because of this passion, Shakira attended Cardiff University to study Journalism and Politics whilst balancing a part time telesales job at The AA to fund her love of fashion and travel. This is where she discovered she was a pretty good saleswoman and her passion for selling began to flourish.

CARDIFF WORKS Cardiff Life | Page 61
Pictured on the left: Shakira with acclaimed interior design, Liz Styles

Both of these experiences helped Shakira realise that she wanted a career where she could balance her love of media with her love of all things sales. For Shakira, a career whereby she could “sell clients products and service” through effective communications became the next progression, where she fell in love with the concept of public relations. “PR and communications is still one of my biggest passions which supports my overarching passion, helping businesses to thrive and realise their growth potential.”

At the age of 22, Shakira was made redundant from the PR agency that she worked at as they suddenly went into administration. She was offered several jobs but took the plunge and set up her own PR Agency, Seren 7 LTD. This brought many opportunities to work with all different types of clients, including the Oldwalls Collection.

MEET Shakira Obaid

At the time, Oldwalls was an incredible family run business but still developing. Shakira said she “absolutely loved the mission, values and culture of Oldwalls from the very start and worked closely alongside the owners and management to develop it over the past decade”. Her initial brief was to effectively market the wedding venue to prospective couples via strategic PR, marketing and sales campaigns. The Oldwalls Collection then acquired the beautiful Fairyhill with the ambition to grow the group and offer the best wedding venues in Wales to a wider audience. This is when Shakira was then offered the role of Commercial Director... and the rest is history.

Oldwalls Collection now offers three of Wales’s leading wedding venues in the portfolio, Oldwalls Gower, Fairyhill and Sant Ffraed House, with the ambition to expand across the bridge. Shakira’s mission is to work alongside the board of directors, herself being one of them, as well as the management teams to make ‘Oldwalls Collection’ a household name throughout Wales and beyond. Shakira tells us “We are constantly looking for ways to develop the product, service and offering.” Herself and the senior leaders consider innovation to be absolutely key to the success of the Oldwalls Collection. They continue to research and innovate every day to ensure that they’re ahead of trends and remain the number one wedding venues in Wales.

& HER FANTASTIC TEAM

One of the most notable changes that Shakira brought to fruition during her tenure (and one she is most proud of) is introducing the concept of ‘Wedding Showcases’. When she joined the industry, the standard promotion events for independent exclusive venues in South Wales were traditional wedding fayres.

Shakira felt that couples wanted to experience the venue exactly how it would be on the day and wanted a more personal approach, so introduced the ‘Wedding Showcase’ concept. These showcases rocketed their bookings by tenfold and are now a standard across the industry. For those looking to break into the PR industry, here’s some advice from Shakira (and Oscar Wilde); “Be yourself, because everyone else is already taken.”

She said it’s critical that you believe in the values, mission and culture of the client you are managing or the agency you are working for. “It is such a competitive industry full of talent that the only way you are going to stand out is to be authentic and passionate”. Shakira told us, “You don’t have to directly relate to the products, clients and services you are representing, but it is important that you believe in their values, mission and goals to effectively represent and support them in being the best that they can be”. This will, in turn, help you to be the best that you can be.

CARDIFF COMMUNITIES OF

THE COMMUNITIES WHO MAKE CARDIFF THE EXCEPTIONAL CITY THAT IT IS

The Grange Pavilion in Grangetown is home to a community-focused café, The Hideout. The café aims to bring people together over a cuppa. The Hideout team are passionate about community cohesion, breaking down barriers and helping people overcome their life hurdles. The coffee shop provides a complimentary breakfast and allows drinks to be gifted to someone as a way of passing on acts of kindness. We were lucky enough to speak with the co-owner of The Hideout, Zara Ali.

How does your café help build a sense of community?

“We initially started the café in the old pavilion building in 2017. The purpose of The Hideout was for it to be a community-focused coffee shop to bring all walks of life together over a perfect cup of brew. As much as we’re passionate about brewing the perfect coffee and having luscious bakes, our main focus at The Hideout is breaking down barriers and community cohesion.”

Can you tell us how you help those who may have struggled in life?

“With the help of Grange Pavilion, we’ve managed to arrange many activities over the years to help community members. We have provided free breakfast clubs during the winter and half term for local families struggling with the living crisis. We also run a monthly free repair café in partnership with Repair Café Wales. With the help of local volunteers, people can bring in items to be fixed. They do their best to bring the item back to life.

Another thing the Hideout is home to is The Culture Café. The café has been the baby of The Hideout since we first opened our doors in 2017. The idea was born from wanting to create a safe space for people from different backgrounds and cultures to come together and discuss various topics about what was bothering us in the world, thus, we have the Culture Café!

So far, we’ve touched on discussions about race and equality, AP CYMRU - neurodiversity, being ethnic in the community and homelessness. This will start running again in October and is available for anyone to partake in. Our community centre also has a ‘pay with a conscious window’, where members of the community pay it forward for any food/drink item for anyone who may be struggling, left their wallet at home, or just needs a ‘pick me up’. They can choose anything from the sticky notes on the window. We’ve also helped with various charity events, community iftars and Easter celebrations.”

Why did you decide to open your community café?

“We’ve always been passionate about community and involved with Community Gateway since 2017. I’ve always wanted to create a neutral space for everyone to feel welcome and comfortable. I also absolutely love coffee too, so it was a win-win!”

How can people get involved?

“We’re always looking for volunteers, especially for our repair café. We are also looking for organisations to support our café with our ‘pay with a conscious window’ and use the café for classes, events, and groups.”

To get involved, send over an email to Grange Pavillion: admin@grangepavilion.wales
