The Launch of 591 by Anatoni's

T

ony Frawley returns to Cardiff’s pizza scene with the official launch of his new restaurant, 591 by Anatoni’s. With the old Roath location earning a spot on the Sunday Times’ top 20 places to eat pizza in the UK, after two years working in London’s Royal Albert Hall Tony and his wife Anna had a lot to live up to.

A recent soft launch confirmed that Anatoni’s was very much still a legendary pizza establishment and there’s been a real buzz leading up to the hard launch this January. Featuring a full, re-vamped menu and Anatoni’s signature flair, the official launch of 591 by Anatoni’s was an absolute success. Championing traditional, Neapolitan pizzas, the pizzeria is guaranteed to become a firm favourite for locals and visitors alike. One thing’s for sure, 591 by Anatoni’s is Cardiff’s next best thing to booking a flight to Naples. Whilst walk-ins are available, book ahead for a guaranteed table! Book by calling on 029 2240 0957.

Getting Around

For an economical and (mostly) cheaper transportation choice, the train and local bus network cover extensive routes across the city, with additional services provided on match days. Just a brief 5-minute stroll from Cardiff Central Station will get you to Principality Stadium. Take yourself in the other direction and you’ll be at Cardiff’s DEPOT. DEPOT Fanhub Since its inception in 2015, DEPOT has become one of Cardiff’s biggest game-day fan zones. The big interview

C

harlotte Church, Cardiff-born singer and television host, is best known for her powerful soprano voice and for being both the youngest musician to reach number one on the Classical Music Album Chart in the UK and the youngest female singer to break into the UK Top 40 Albums Chart. If you’re unfamiliar with her accomplishments, you may have been out of the loop for the past two decades! Following those achievements, Charlotte has pursued training as a sound healing therapist. Additionally, she has taken the initiative to establish a free learning community in South Wales and has launched The Dreaming wellness retreat. Let’s delve deeper into these endeavours as Charlotte shares more about them with us in her own words. You founded The Awen Project in 2019. Can you tell us about the charity and what the driving force behind it was? The Awen Project is a free-to-attend democratic school which operates in natural spaces, currently in a forest in Dinas Powys, and it’s born of the need to have a more humane education. I think that the way that we educate our young people has not moved on much and most teachers in mainstream education would probably agree. It’s not fit for purpose in today’s world. What The Awen Project does is it follows the most modern thinking about the brain and human development, which means that you’re empowering young people and giving them the freedom to choose. Making good and bad choices, and learning from those choices. We give young people the opportunity to make decisions about who they are and what they want to do. I’m passionate about education and a more humane, natural approach. It’s not wishy-washy either, we want our students to be excellent in what they’re passionate about! Then, you bought Rhydoldog House and The Dreaming Retreat began to come to life. Can you tell us more about this and where the idea came from? The idea here really just came from being on the land of Rhydoldog House when I was sitting quietly on the land, trying to tune into my extra-sensory perception. The land is just incredible. It came with 47 acres of amazing woodland and two waterfalls - it’s like walking onto a Lord of the Rings film set! As soon as I got there and got to witness the cascading waterfalls, it just felt like a very cleansing, healing place, and so The Dreaming was born.

Charlotte Church

e

the big interview The three pillars of The Dreaming are nature connection, sound therapy and ceremony - because there’s so much to be honoured in our lives. The more we mark these occasions, the more easeful these things become. A lot of these concepts are really simple and I love it so much. The Dreaming really is just the most magical place on earth. Song of the Soul' is launching at the retreat this March. Can you tell us a bit more about that and how your career in music assists here? Singing has been a balm to me throughout my life. It’s helped me through some very difficult situations and I feel as though I’ve been singing to self-soothe for a long time. It’s deep within the human DNA. I see the suffering in the world and the suffering in people and I feel deeply moved to do something about it. This is how ‘Song of the Soul’ was born. ‘Song of the Soul’ will be me and a wonderful practitioner, Deborah Coughlin, leading people in an exploration of releasing their true, authentic voice. Who are they? Who do they want to be in the world? What are they here to do? It’s just about starting to dive in to see what it’s all about for them so they can feel powerful and at ease with the world. You don’t need to be a singer or have a musical background in any way, shape or form to be able to do this. We’ve been programmed to think that you can only sing or play music if you’re “good”, but I think it’s one of our most potent tools for healing and emotional expression. Oh, and it’s going to be loads of fun too!

What is your long-term vision for The Dreaming Retreat? My long-term vision is for The Dreaming to be a place where people from around the world can come and share wisdom with us in Wales, and that we’re able to share our wisdom with them too! Our Welsh, Celtic culture is very rich in magic, song and poetry. I would also love for us to be a beacon in these dark times to assist in self and societal healing. Are there any other exciting projects that you're looking to get stuck into? Yes! I have a podcast coming that I’m not allowed to say too much about yet. I’m also working on some new music with collaborators where I’m diving into my deepest feelings, which is terrifying yet exciting. It’s certainly been a long time coming! You can keep up with Charlotte and the ongoings of The Dreaming here: https://www.thedreaming.co.uk/

Doctor Who is Back and Better Than Ever! Regenerating Ideologies and Embracing Nostalgia

The Arts Reviewed and written by Film Probe

0 years of Doctor Who, a television marvel and the longest-running sci-fi series of all time. Doctor Who is a worldwide phenomenon and dominates science fiction, to celebrate the anniversary fan favourites David Tennant and Catherine Tate returned to the BBC sci-fi show 60 years after its first-ever episode was broadcast. David Tennant played the Fourteenth Doctor for three hourlong specials in November 2023, then Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa succeeded him as the Fifteenth Doctor. Gatwa is the first black queer actor to take on the challenge of The Timelord and it is beyond exciting to watch him on screen, bringing his unique take on the classic persona. Gatwa’s Christmas Day Special introduced us to his new sidekick as well as showing us a glimpse into what this new Doctor will be like. Taking a page out of Tennant’s book I expect to see a flamboyant, physical and comedic approach to the role. Gatwa’s style of acting is borderline slapstick and incredibly tangible. I thought his charismatic and charming nature on screen was extremely likeable and brought a sense of seduction to the role.

the arts Photography by BBC

Written by the Welsh triumph, Russell T Davies and filmed in various Welsh locations including Cardiff and Newport; the return of Doctor Who looks to be a nostalgic comeback for Welsh fans. Incorporating familiar and original storylines, encouraging a new generation of audiences to fall in love with the classic series along with charming old fans to revisit their beloved characters. David Tennant’s three episodes consist of The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle, each with its complex narrative and sentimental look into the past. The Giggle (EP03) starred Neil Patrick Harris as The Toymaker, an immortal entity who forces his victims to play a series of difficult games and tricky challenges, with the outcome deciding whether or not they will remain his toys forever. This episode felt the most sentimental, with a voice of the show’s history and homage to the past villains, aliens and visual beauty of the show. Doctor Who is a beloved staple of British television history because of its unique way of regenerating and moulding itself into society and altering its narrative to conform with modern ideologies.

Written by Lydia Bowen-Williams Instagram @filmprobe Website www.filmprobe.co.uk

David Tennant’s Anniversary specials broke audiences in slowly to the reinvented Doctor, using an intelligent mix of practical special effects and CGI whilst consistently bringing comedy and intelligence to the plot. Audiences also witnessed a new generation of The Doctor, harmonising with societal constructs of gender and using an intuitive way of referencing specific communities. To some, these additions may seem unnecessary but for a new generation of Doctor Who lovers, these inclusive plot points encourage them to feel seen. Most people can identify with Doctor Who, whether you are a die-hard fan or just simply watched one episode as a child. Most have a connection to the show, I believe Ncuti Gatwa’s new Doctor will reinvent the series and catapult it into mainstream media, a global takeover. The Doctor has never been so relatable and the change in character could draw more audiences in and encourage The Doctor to uncover worldly stories that mirror reality whilst being a beacon of hope and encouragement for a select group of viewers. You can catch up with Doctor Who on streaming services like BBC iPlayer, Amazon Video, Disney Plus and more.

A Love-Filled Feast

DIY Tacos W

hether you believe in it or not, Valentine’s Day is an excellent opportunity to take some time to show your partner, your friends or yourself, some extra love. For me, in all of those situations, extra love is best served in the form of great food. The following dish has multiple components, making it a perfect activity for one or more to join the party (there’s a lot of chopping!). I often have taco nights with my fiancée, where we’ll each claim a side of the kitchen island, grab a chopping board and knife and get going. This is typically done with a glass of wine within reach and some good music - though take it easy on the wine while doing this part.

Dom Horan The Curly Home Cook Instagram @thecurlyhomecook

22 | Cardiff Life

If making or eating this with a partner or friends, I also encourage serving the different components separately, as choosing the different fillings and customising their amounts each time is part of the fun. Depending on whether you want more creaminess from avocado, crunch from cabbage, brightness from lime or punchy

acidity from pickled onions, you can build each to suit your taste and curiosity. There’s an adventure in the pursuit of the perfect bite! There is also always the option of adding your own condiments to customise these further – these may come in the form of a hot sauce or salsa. On this note, if you are personally or are accommodating vegetarian or vegan guests, try frying some jackfruit in the same spices and use a vegan alternative to sour cream. This meal can be served and eaten on a dressed table with candles, red balloons and dim lights, or on a coffee table in front of a movie. It’s interactive and most importantly, delicious. I always make more than we need, because we always eat more than we need. I have curated the recipe with two servings in mind, so scale up and down as necessary. Regardless of how you’re celebrating, I suggest that you treat yourself and others to a special meal this Valentine’s Day.

Avocado - 1 avocado Spiced prawns - 275g prawns - 3 tbsp olive oil - 2 tsp honey - ½ lime - 1 tsp paprika - 1 tsp mild chilli powder - ½ tsp cumin - ½ tsp cayenne - Hefty pinch of salt - Hefty grind of pepper Tortillas - 8 corn tortillas

Prawn tacos with cabbage slaw and pink pickled onions

columnist

Ingredients Pink pickled onions (ideally 2 hours before) - 2 red onions - 150ml water - 150ml cider vinegar - 1 tsp sugar - ½ tsp chilli flakes - ½ tsp oregano - ½ lime - Pinch of salt - Grind of pepper Cabbage slaw - 150g white cabbage - 100ml sour cream - ½ lime - 2 tsp cumin - Handful of coriander - Salt - Pepper

Serves: 2 Time: 45 mins

To Serve - 2 limes - Handful of coriander

Recipe Pink pickled onions (ideally 2 hours before) Chop the onions in half lengthwise, then cut off the tip and roots and peel. Place each half face down and slice thinly, lengthwise again, and set aside. Boil a pot of water and place the onions in for approximately 1 minute. Strain the onions from the pot, and run under cold water for 20 seconds before draining once again. Place the onions, along with the remaining ingredients into a glass container with a lidmand stir. Ensure that the liquid covers the onions – if it doesn’t, feel free to add more white wine vinegar and water in equal quantities until covered. Leave in the fridge for at least one hour before dinner – though I recommend 3-4.

Photography by The Curly Home Cook Cabbage slaw Cut off a large cheek of cabbage, lay it flat side down, and finely slice it into thin shreds. Mix the sour cream, finely chopped coriander, lime, cumin, salt and pepper in a bowl, and add the cabbage, dressing it evenly.

you think they’re done, take one out, chop it in half and check that it’s opaque all the way through. If so, it’s your duty to taste it, both for quality and because you deserve it. This is your opportunity to add more salt, spice, acidity or sweetness, depending on your taste.

Avocado Halve and pit an avocado. Using a spoon, release the halves from the skin (you can peel them if you prefer). Lay, face down and finely slice lengthwise. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and chilli flakes.

Tortillas Heat tortillas in a pan on mediumhigh heat for 30-40 seconds each side, or until done to your liking. Place into a container with a lid so that they keep warm and soften slightly.

Spiced prawns In a bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients bar the prawns. Once combined, add the prawns and marinate for at least 15 minutes. Heat a pan on high heat and add the prawns. Turn before they’re halfway cooked and allow them to cook through until pink. Then comes the cook’s tax – you’ve earned the right to try things as you go! When

Serve These can be served either as individual dishes to be assembled at the table, or built in the kitchen before serving. I typically start with cabbage slaw, followed by prawns, avocado slices to the side, and then pickled onion on top. I’ll typically then add a mound of coriander and a hefty squeeze of lime to finish it off. Et voilà!

BLUESTONE B WINTER

LIGHTS Photography by Bluestone

luestone National Park Resort has launched its magical Winter Lights season for 2024 with incredible light installations for guests to wander through and discover. The long weekend or mid-week breaks – offered from January 5 to March 23 - are the perfect way to shake off the post-Christmas blues. Set in the resort’s undercover Serendome for the first time, this year features a fascinating Tales from Wales adventure, brought to life with light displays. As the sun sets, the trail lights up with a spell-binding twist on familiar Welsh tales including the Preseli dragon, the web of Wise, the frog, fairy and fountain, and the timber knights. Right in the middle of the dome, the huge snow giant keeps watch – although he has a cold and is liable to sneeze and spread snow everywhere. The interactive light trail is designed to celebrate the power of storytelling and spark the imaginations of children young and old alike. It’s impossible not to be enchanted by the giant sweets suspended from the roof or the giant lanterns formed into woodland creatures along the way. All the while, the Aurora light show acts as a backdrop to the trail and the magic builds as you journey through until colourful lights explode across the skyline in beautiful dancing waves of light. The magic isn’t confined to the Serendome. At the heart of the village sits the Wish Tree surrounded by Bluestone’s classic light show and winter lights music. Visit the village during the evening and watch it all come to life. The tree holds magical powers and when it’s full of wishes, something truly wonderful happens. To finish the journey, guests are invited to the Ever After Party in the Cloud Theatre in the Serendome. With games for all the family, disco dancing and

advertorial special appearances from some special fairytale friend characters, it’ll leave everyone believing that happily ever after does exist after all. Guests can add extra magic during their stay with a special breakfast buffet feast, where fairy tale friends will entertain everyone with singing, dancing and a special meet and greet with photo opportunities. Or, for little ones who have wild imaginations and an insatiable appetite, add the Ty Pot Tales to your stay. Held at the banquet hall, guests can tuck into a tasty Welsh cake and sip a scrumptious milkshake as the Ty-Pot Singers entertain with classic rhymes and tot-friendly stories. mbarking on his journey in the realm of rugby with the Cardiff Blues and amassing an impressive 32 caps for his national team, Louis Rees-Zammit is not merely confined to the world of sports. Beyond the field, he is set to make waves with the launch of his innovative sports drink brand, Savitar. In this exclusive interview, we delve into the story behind Savitar and uncover the passion and vision driving this innovative venture. Hey Louis, it’s great to meet you! So tell us, how was the idea and name for Savitar born? Hi team, it’s good to talk. Sure! After years of being involved in professional rugby and consuming countless energy drinks, I didn’t feel that they provided a complete solution to training so we decided to create Savitar. The project has been ongoing for 2 years to ensure we nailed down the right ingredients and flavours. We’ve now arrived at what we think is a tasty and functional sports drink that can take an athlete from the beginning of the workout, right through and past the recovery stage. We’ll be looking to develop the brand as we go on to fit the needs of our consumers. The name came from the ancient god of movement Savitr, which we thought would be very fitting!

Can you tell us more about the products and how they can aid performance?

What are some of the skills that you’ve brought from your sports career into business?

There is a series of 3 drinks. A pre, an intra and a post. Each is specifically designed to aid each stage of the workout. The pre-drink contains caffeine, the intra contains electrolytes and the post contains protein and antioxidants (along with vitamins in each drink that help the body function efficiently during exercise). We have also introduced botanical extracts in the form of ginseng (pre), goji berry (intra) and turmeric (post) which have been heavily researched in recent years and suggest that they can help with each stage of your workout.

I’d probably say resilience is a big one as with any start-up, there have been some obstacles to overcome but we have finally achieved something that we think is unique and will really benefit any active person. A strong work ethic as well you need to be self-motivated quite a lot in sport and I think the same in business. Especially when you’re setting up a new one as nobody is telling you what to do!

You’re currently at the height of your professional rugby career, but what are Savitar’s plans for the year ahead? As a brand, we plan to keep expanding and pursuing other avenues of the health and fitness industry - my rugby career gives a good platform for the brand but also shows that what we have created with Savitar works. I’ll be consuming the drinks consistently to help my performance on the training ground and on the pitch.

Looking past 2024, what is your long-term vision for the business? We’re gonna try to grow the business naturally over the next few months (and hopefully years) intending to grow outside of the UK. We also don’t just intend to use rugby as a platform as we feel the benefits of this drink stretch across all types of physical exercise and anything that demands a strain on your body. It’s a really exciting time with the business and hopefully, we’ll build a community to get behind the brand and create some cool events/moments in the near future. BBC's Men Up A Welsh Story of Masculinity, Mental Health & Relationships

30 | Cardiff Life

A

group of ordinary middle-aged Welsh men take part in an extraordinary, life-changing experience. Based on true events, Men Up is a comedic yet candid drama about masculinity, mental health, family and relationships. At Morriston Hospital in Swansea, 1994 an unconventional event took place that changed the lives of millions across the globe. In this featurelength BBC film, we watch as a group of wellestablished Welsh actors take on the story of the first clinical trials for an unknown drug…that later became known as Viagra.

columnist Curated by Quay Street Productions and Boom for BBC One and iPlayer in a co-commission with BBC Wales, it is important to tell Welsh stories and shine a light on a narrative some might deem inappropriate or crude. Wales helped advance medicine and as a country, we should be proud.

Photography by BBC - Quay Street Productions -Tom Jackson

to try anything to regain intimacy. Tommy, played by Paul Rhys, is a gay man who doesn’t allow prejudice to stop him from participating in the drug trials. Colin, played by Steffan Rhodri is a quiet man since his wife’s passing, longing for love again but anxious about what might happen when that day comes. Phaldut Sharma plays Pete Shah, a confident man who finds himself in denial about his impotence. Eddie, played by Mark Lewis Jones is a ‘proper bloke’. On the outside, he’s as hard as nails but on the inside, he is unable to please his wife and willing to try anything.

Men Up stars the likes of Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones), Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk), Phaldut Sharma (Sherwood), Paul Rhys (A Discovery of Witches), Steffan Rhodri (House of the Dragon), Mark Lewis Jones (Gangs of London), and Joanna Page (Gavin & Stacey). Written by Welsh screenwriter Matthew Barry, directed by Ashely Way and executively produced by Russell T Davies, Men Up has some of the best artists Wales can offer. Although Men Up is based on true events, the details of the story are fictionalised for the screen. Originally, a drug was founded and tested in Merthyr Tydfil, the town of steel. During Merthyr’s industrial decline in the early 1990s, men found themselves volunteering for an unknown drug trial which later helped discover the foundations for the drug we know as, Viagra. Later, these tests moved to Swansea which is where Men Up takes place. Each character has their inner turmoil regarding their romantic relationships and ultimate happiness. The feature sets out to diminish taboos and highlight real issues men can face in everyday life around the topic of erectile dysfunction. Iwan Rheon plays Meurig, a character whose marriage is crumbling around him. Unable to talk to his wife, he is willing

Men Up explores the concept of suffering in silence. Men in this story can be considered outcasts or broken but this feature attempts to change those stereotypes and show audiences men can be vulnerable. Impotence is not the punch line. This film delves deeper into the emotions of each character’s story and tries to convey their struggle by truly understanding their bodies whilst reclaiming their sexual freedom. Written by Lydia Bowen-Williams Instagram @filmprobe Website www.filmprobe.co.uk

Although funny at times, this film is necessary and informative. Welsh audiences should be intrigued by our involvement in such a largely influential time in medicine history but also watch with admiration towards the real men who partook in the trials. The drug quickly became one of the most controversial in history and of course, profitable. Viagra reshaped how we talk about sexual and mental health, not just for men but for everyone.

IN Bloom Insider Tips & Tricks for Selling Your Home This Spring

36 | Cardiff Life

cardiff in bloom

s

pring is the season to get our homes and gardens ready for sale and who can blame us? With the arrival of milder weather, extended days, lighter evenings, and daffodils preparing to pop up in full bloom, it’s a prime time to flaunt our homes in all their glory! This season traditionally marks a vibrant period, inspiring many to consider moving home. Now, we begin to embrace that splendid time when British weather becomes somewhat tolerable, and you can step outside without the risk of frostbite, thoughts turn to tackling lingering DIY projects. In this article, I delve into what’s happening in Cardiff’s housing market and share my top tips for getting your home ready to stand out in the bustling spring market.

A Fresh Start for 2024 The Bank of England chose to maintain interest rates at 5.25%, signalling stability and providing a boost of confidence for both buyers and sellers, allowing them to plan with greater confidence. The housing market displayed surprising resilience throughout 2023, defying all predictions. In October, the average property price stood at £287,782 in the UK, experiencing only a marginal 1.2% year-on-year decline and surpassing the low point recorded in March by £7,000 (UK HPI). In recent weeks, the media has been abuzz with news of a price war between major lenders as they seemingly race to offer the most competitive products, making homeownership more affordable.

What about Cardiff? Cardiff is a city that weathered the confusing storm of mixed narratives in 2023, influenced by rate increases and media speculation about house prices. Despite this, Cardiff stands tall. The quest for more space and better ‘bang for the buck’ remains high on buyers’ wish lists. Thanks to the workfrom-home revolution, daily commuters are expanding their horizons, and let’s face it, with the best rugby team in the world, stunning scenery, nearby beaches, a vibrant city centre and express train links to Paddington, Cardiff is worthy of any buyer’s consideration. In the first two weeks of the year, Cardiff saw a whopping 273 properties hit the market for sale (237 houses and 36 apartments) which further backs up the feeling of positivity in the market this year. The current average home price in Cardiff is £364,000, marking a 26.48% increase compared to the national average. Additionally, the average time it takes to secure a buyer for a marketed property in Cardiff is approximately 30 days, and although it can vary depending on various factors, the conveyancing process in the UK typically takes between 8 to 12 weeks. So, if you have holiday plans or are basing your move around school applications, it is worth bearing these time frames in mind.

Thinking of Selling Your Home this Spring? Here are my top tips to spruce up your home, attract prospective buyers and maximise the value of your home: De-clutter: Things like personal items, toys and family photos often obscure a home’s true potential. It is beneficial to minimize excess and restore your home to a pristine state. Going through these items during the packing process for a move is a perfect time to proactively declutter and identify new homes for items no longer necessary. By doing so, prospective buyers can better envision placing their own items in the property without distraction. Curb Appeal: A fresh lick of paint on the front door is an easy way to add instant curb appeal. First impressions count, and therefore your home’s frontage needs to be as memorable as possible for all the right reasons. Some buyers make up their minds about a home within minutes, and this is because the exterior tells you a lot about the overall maintenance and appeal of a property. Simple steps like moving recycling bins out of sight and placing a new welcome mat at the door can make all the difference. Make an Entrance: Remove coats, bags and shoes that may be hanging up in your hallway. You want buyers to feel a sense of space as they take their first steps through the door. Leave doors to rooms open, opening blinds and curtains in each room. This will make the space seem bigger. If you have a console table, be sure to pop some fresh flowers in a vase too, perhaps some vibrant daffodils to add a pop of colour. Deep Clean: A deep clean can greatly enhance the overall appearance and fragrance of your home. This creates a welcoming atmosphere for potential buyers, enabling them to envision themselves living there without the immediate concern of having to invest in new carpets or perform extensive property cleaning. The smell is a great way to set the tone and awaken the senses as buyers step into your home. Plug in a diffuser in the

hallway and one upstairs to keep an appealing allure as buyers make their way through the property. Reach for the Toolbox: Tackle minor repairs and maintenance issues such as leaky faucets, squeaky doors and chipped paint. A well-maintained home signals to buyers that it has been cared for and lets them know they won’t have to factor in costly repairs. Neutral Tones: Consider repainting bold or personalised walls with neutral tones, allowing buyers to envision their own style and taste. According to Forbes, the new on-trend for 2024 is bright red paint, but perhaps leave that to the new buyers to try and test and instead just add a few pops of colour with soft furnishings, such as pillows and throws. Organise and Stage: Professional Staging has become more and more popular, and I am a firm advocate for it. It’s a great way to showcase your property and highlight its functionality and flow and will make it stand out against the competition. According to Forbes, statistically staged homes sell for 17% more and 95% of staged homes sell in 11 days or less. Energy Efficiency Upgrades: Consider making small energy-efficient upgrades, such as LED bulbs or a smart thermostat, which can be attractive to eco-conscious buyers and will boost your EPC rating which will be displayed on the brochures on an online advert. Get Up to Speed: On the top of buyers’ priority lists is space for home working, so be sure to set up a space that shows how this could be possible. Be sure to check your broadband speed to pass on to your agent. This will be useful advice that buyers will appreciate knowing and can make a big difference to their decision-making. Highlight Outdoor Spaces: Showcase your outdoor areas by cleaning up patios and gardens, and if you have pets be sure to keep an eye out for nasty surprises. Create an inviting atmosphere with tasteful outdoor furniture and décor, making sure that any outdoor lighting is working. Lighter evenings mean that buyers will book in viewings on their way home from work.

cardiff in bloom

Online Presentation: Invest in an agent that will showcase your home, maximising its presentation online. Professional photos and videos allow a buyer to envisage the lifestyle of your property and what the local area offers. For most of us, our home is our most expensive asset, so investing in the best marketing is imperative and will secure you the best price in the long run. Pricing is Key: Research similar properties for sale in your local area. It’s crucial to establish an estimate of your home’s value before seeking valuations from agents. This ensures they provide accurate advice, preventing them from suggesting unrealistic prices solely to outshine competitors. By prioritising these suggestions, you can elevate your home’s market appeal and boost the chances of a successful sale this spring. By focusing on these tips, you can enhance your home’s marketability and increase the likelihood of a successful sale this spring.

N

ow that we have explored ways you can make your home more attractive to future buyers, let’s explore savvy ways that you can save time and stress when the moving day comes.

Upon deciding to sell, engage a solicitor promptly: This proactive step not only saves time but can also expedite the overall conveyancing process by as much as three or four weeks, once a deal is reached. Opting for a local solicitor, facilitating hand delivery of documents and in-person communication, proves invaluable - never compromise on securing a proficient conveyancer! Thankfully there are plenty of great ones to choose from in Cardiff. Dig out that paperwork: Create a file containing essential documents for the sale, such as utility bills, warranties, planning applications, boiler service records, meter readings and council tax bills. Potential buyers often inquire about these details when assessing the home’s ongoing expenses, so having them readily available is consistently beneficial. Pack your bags! Prepare a bag for each household member containing essentials for the initial night in your new home. Items like toothbrushes, pyjamas and medication are best kept within easy reach. This ensures you won’t need to sift through numerous packed boxes on the first night. Don’t forget to place tea bags and chocolate digestives at the top for quick access! Label, label, label Sealed boxes are much safer to transport, so make sure they’re labelled and organised. It might take a bit of extra time and care to sort your belongings into categories, but you’ll get your time back in spades when it comes to unpacking. Make the switch Find out who the suppliers are of your new home, make contact ahead of the move and schedule things in, like broadband installation, and switch over of utilities for when you move – this will be one less thing to think about while busy unpacking. columnist Now let’s expand the circle a little wider and add in say NHS workers who we all clapped for in the pandemic, banging our pots and pans in appreciation for their courageous efforts to keep us well. Our health and the health of those near and dear to us is another thing we are thankful for. The list is endless and I do not mean for you to spend several hours a day notating it all but begin maybe to just jot down a few things each day.

UNCOVER THE ARTIST IN YOU

Capture the moments of joy. It may be a shard of sunlight on a cold day that makes you smile. Jot it down. It may be a moment of peace, a moment of reassuring calm that you discover amid the frantic pace of your life. Jot it down. Or, even when the shadows of sadness cloud your life, let’s keep ourselves balanced and jot that down too. As these thoughts flow from your mind to your pen and paper, or your keyboard, you will begin to see a difference in your approach to everyday life.

rom stargazing into the night sky drawing lines to join the stars, to joining the dots in a children’s playbook creating a face, a dinosaur or a house. We humans have an innate desire to express on the outside, what’s going on inside. Etched hieroglyphics in ancient caves were the first signs of communication in picture form and as we advanced as a species, we eventually ended up with geniuses like Michaelangelo in the Sistine chapel creating masterpieces. Fast forward and we learn to appreciate street artists like Banksy. What all these have in common is the need to get the thoughts in their heads out into the open. Expressed creativity.

Hybrid Journaling This can be a mixture of traditional and digital journaling. Pen and paper still provide a satisfying sensory feel. For others, it will be their laptop synced to their phone. Personal entries may include your private thoughts, goals and aspirations. Poetry, songwriting and storytelling. Thoughts about what your interests are. You may want to create a vision board at the start of the year to inspire you. Use photos, quotes and specific words or numbers that you like. Photos of a best friend or your pet. Things that will make you smile. Create a list of your favourite songs, films or theatre shows. What is your colour of choice?

Gratitude Journal You’ll be surprised once you get going how many people, places and things you are actually thankful for. Your mind has started already, hasn’t it? You have people that are fundamental to your life, they are indispensable. They add value and worth and life without them just would not be the same. Some of these are parents, spouses and children or close friends. They are irreplaceable and we are grateful.

Art is visual, art is written or spoken and is the staple of the human imagination. Art stimulates us and is a kind of built-in therapy. I will be looking at a creative tool briefly here that can help us to lighten the load of overthinking and alleviate some areas of stress. It is easy and can be used in several positive ways. That tool is journaling. There are of course many ways to ‘do’ journaling but for this article, I will condense these to just two. This can be a fantastic way for you to begin to unlock the artist in you. Whether it’s music, singing, painting or maybe knitting jumpers for Oxfam, it is still art.

For those who have moved away from pen and paper and the traditional way of writing stuff down, there is the very versatile world of digital journaling. Lots of people now have a laptop, a phone and a smartwatch as extensions to their lives. Access to social media platforms is just a click away. They offer amazing tools to enrich your overall experience. There are video tools that can enhance the experience along with a host of apps both free and paid. Most of all, journaling has to be fun. At the outset of this new year, reward yourself with a new notebook and pen or type away until your heart’s content, but most of all outsource your thoughts and uncover the artist in you.

A

s the song says, ‘Love is in the air’, and there are many ways of showing your appreciation to your partner, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet, as I’m talking about wine.

Here at Fine Wines Direct UK, we love our grape juice. We sing to it, cuddle it and tell it bedtime stories to keep it at its full potential. Well, some of that’s true, but as you’ve probably gathered, we really do love our wine. Fine Wines Direct UK are an independent, specialist importer of wines and we offer a comprehensive range of wines from both leading, as well as exciting, niche producers from across the wine world. Our wide range of interesting bottles means that our dedicated team have plenty to talk about and we love working closely with our customers, on-trade and off-trade - and, yes, we have a retail shop at 242, Penarth Road, Cardiff that is open to the public - so come on in and have a natter. This year I’m going to help you all plan for Valentine’s Day. So, instead of that mad dash to the petrol station, picking up a tatty card and some wiper blades for your loved one, I’m going to give some hints about a nice glass to enjoy on the day of lurrrrvvve. I know it’s a bit nippy out there so let’s get bitten by the love bug, cwtch up and have a nice night in. Fizz is always a good way to start and doesn’t have to cost the earth. We have an array of that Italian favourite Prosecco, a soft glass of bubbles with that intoxicating pop of a cork. If you fancy something a little more complex then why not look to Cava from Spain? The Marques de Caceres Cava Brut NV (Fine Wines Direct UK, £11.99) is made in the same way as Champagne, and results in a rich glass of fizz that carries an opulent, stonefruit profile with a creamy texture.

46 | Cardiff Life

But, if you do insist on Champagne, then we have a whole raft of fizzy treats from entry-level to luxury grand marques. The sumptuous Pommery Brut Royal (Fine Wines Direct UK, £47.99) comes from the house that invented brut (dry) Champagne, courtesy of owner Louise Pommery, who was the first woman to receive a French state funeral. You can of course, get your loved one a cheeky LaurentPerrier gift set, that not only has a lovely bottle of the dreamy Laurent-Perrier ‘La Cuvee’ Brut but also has two lovely flutes included (Fine Wines Direct UK, £59.99). Serve chilled by a roaring fire and I’m sure things will warm up afterwards. A trio of terrific rosé wines that will have you tickled pink You don’t have to wait for the spring to enjoy a tasty glass of rosé and these examples will fill your heart with joy. This blend of garnacha and tempranillo, Marques de Caceres Excellens Rioja Rosado (Fine Wines Direct UK, £11.99), hits the sweet spot of crunchy cherry fruit flavours and rich peachy notes. It is also the recent recipient of Best Rioja Rosé in a wine trade magazine and is one of our favourites. Y Viva Espana! LOU by Chateau Peyrassol, Cotes de Provence (Fine Wines Direct UK, £12.99), will get you dreaming of peoplewatching in the sunny squares of Provence. The floral bouquet is followed by soft summer fruits and a lick of crisp gooseberry notes. So well-balanced, pale and very interesting. Chateau Peyrassol La Bastide, Cotes de Provence (Fine Wines Direct UK, £19.99). A luxurious glass of rosé, that has food at its heart. Whether paired with lobster or a rich prawn dish, this gastronomic pink has an abundance of wild strawberry and raspberry fruit with a dash of minerality through the midpalate and a dry, elegant finish. World class. To find out more about Fine Wines Direct or to set up an account, visit www.finewinedirect.co.uk

ew Year’s resolutions can sometimes feel a little cringe. However, as someone who loves writing lists, it gives me time to reflect on the year passed, providing me with some honest feedback as well as a reminder and acknowledgement of the achievements made (big or small). For the last few years, I have focused on value-based goals, instead of the typical over-ambitious and unrealistic resolutions that most of us set. For example, altering “I will go to the gym 5 times a week”, to “I’m going to prioritise health and self-care”. It’s not about adhering to strict, often unattainable targets, but rather about fostering a mindset of continuous improvement and aligning my actions with the values that matter most to me. I resonated with the mantra “create, not consume” heard in a podcast I listened to recently. This phrase, open to interpretation, has inspired me to contemplate creation in various forms; building meaningful spaces, expressing myself through my artwork; and nurturing connections and friendships. “Not consume” led to re-evaluation of my lifestyle, a critical look at; my second-hand shopping habits; my consumption of online content that doesn’t contribute to my happiness or learning; the fashion trends I had taken

CREATE, NOT CONSUME part in. I plan to use this mantra as a guiding principle for 2024, in hopes of maintaining a balanced life and a level of self-awareness. As we embark into the new year, it is worth considering the transformative approach of opting for value-based goals (instead of fixating on external markers of success). Whether it’s kindness, resilience, or mindfulness, aligning your goals with intrinsic values fosters lasting fulfilment and personal growth. This year, let your aspirations be guided by the principles that define you, fostering a more authentic and purpose-driven journey. Unlocking Long-Term Resolutions With Coach Cei

W

hat’s the longest you’ve kept a New Year’s resolution? More than a month? For one in five individuals in the UK setting these new goals, their resolutions are likely to last less than one month.

We usually set our New Year’s resolutions whilst indulging in Christmas treats with a glass of something fizzy. But, by the time Valentine’s Day comes around, things have usually changed. I’m Coach Cei, a Cardiff-based pre and post-natal personal trainer, here to provide some insight into how we can make these goals more sustainable and long-term. Every year we see it: gyms full of new members, people signing up for online diet plans, resolutions to not eat any chocolate or to have a sober January, in the hope of shedding the ‘Christmas pounds’. All of this makes us hate the start of the year; we’re probably still feeling the financial weight from Christmas and the weather can be awful, which means we’re feeling down and not always motivated to get our “fitness goals” in check.

54 | Cardiff Life

Photography by @ufit_fitness

columnist Photography by @ufit_fitness, Valmedia, @coachceil to a food routine that suits you and you’ll probably feel better already after a few days. Don’t restrict yourself either, it’s all about being sustainable and realistic! The reason we feel sluggish isn’t because we’ve piled on the pounds over Christmas; it’s because we haven’t been moving and have probably over-consumed alcohol and underconsumed water in December. Just try upping your steps and drinking more water! You’re probably slightly burnt out. I know as a mum, I am shattered after a busy end to 2023. It’s stressful for us from the minute Halloween ends to when our kids are back in school in January, so no wonder we feel rubbish. We’ve had late night after late night and the kids have been wired for months. Find yourself a routine of early nights and some of that burnout should subside. SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is at a high in winter months and it’s not surprising in the UK as after Christmas especially, it feels as though there isn’t much to look forward to. Not only that, but last month we had that added pressure of “New Year’s resolutions” and social media full of personal trainers asking “What are your goals?!”. My personal goals as a mum this year are to sleep more and have less mess in my house! So, how do we get out of the ‘rut’ of feeling down after the excitement of Christmas and how do we change our mindset when it comes to weight loss and fitness in 2024 and beyond? Here’s how I get my clients to look at it… To put on 1lb of body fat, you need to eat over 3,500 calories in a day, and apart from the occasional day or 2 at Christmas, I doubt many of you are achieving that. Try just going back

Join a class or a group rather than a gym if fitness is something you want to improve. Being a newbie in the gym at the start of the year is horrible. The gyms are rammed, we end up just jumping on a treadmill because we’re nervous about using equipment we haven’t used before, and members of staff are hard to find as they’re all doing new member signups. Go with a friend and put that class in your calendar. It’s harder to not go when you feel you’re letting your friend down and you’ll feel a sense of camaraderie with the other class members. This will soon feel like a hobby more than a chore. Don’t set too many goals. Be realistic and focus on one, hit it and then move on. Quitting smoking, cutting down on snacks, joining a gym, walking more, drinking 3 litres of water per day and getting a promotion all by April is far too unrealistic. Do one at a time and give yourself time. If you’re looking to work out in a safe, enclosed environment with other like-minded mums who want to lose weight, get fit or get stronger, visit my Instagram page for more details and information on how to book - www. instagram.com/coachcei/

athan Marshall is an ultramarathon runner who has taken on unbelievable challenges to raise money for charity. His running has become more than just lacing up his trainers - he runs to inspire and support others around him.

At the beginning of 2023, Nathan began to book ultramarathons with Pegasus, a group of ultra-endurance running enthusiasts who organise challenges around the world. He challenged himself to complete the ‘Pegasus Slam’, a series of six ultramarathons ranging from 32 miles to a huge 52-mile run over Caenarfon Fans and Breacon, completing one ultramarathon every month from April to September. Nathan ran this incredible feat in support of the charity Bigmoose, a Cardiff charity that provides life-saving therapy and support in aid of mental health.

Nathan Marshall As the year went on and he continued to complete the ultramarathons in the Slam, Nathan set his sights on an even bigger target: an invite-only multi-day ultramarathon around Pembroke in support of Bigmoose. Totalling 160 miles in five days, this would be Nathan’s biggest test yet. Nathan says that his first thought was “What am I thinking?”, but his doubts proved to be no obstacle and he completed the 160-mile ultramarathon with 30 others, including Jeff and Chloe Smith, the father and daughter team behind Bigmoose. In doing so, Nathan helped Bigmoose to complete their ‘Project 1 Million’, a mission to raise a million pounds in aid of mental health support. Completing this incredible challenge wasn’t enough for Nathan and he decided to run a 50km ultramarathon in December around Pontcanna. On the day, Nathan was joined by twelve other runners in Pontcanna who ran varying distances with him. As well as this, thirty

supporters of Nathan who weren’t able to join him in Cardiff decided to run an ultramarathon at Box Hill in Surrey, in addition to five runners who were running in the Peak District and the Lake District. Word of his challenge soon spread and Nathan has since been invited to talk on numerous running podcasts, as well as recently launching his podcast ‘Just Run’, available on Spotify. Nathan isn’t showing any signs of stopping. Commencing on the 20th of July 2024, Nathan is due to tackle his biggest challenge yet. He will take on the phenomenal Bigmoose 870, an 870-mile run around the Welsh coastal path. Nathan says that it’s been his dream for four years to run the Welsh coast since he saw Pegasus’ Rhys Jenkins complete it, and he will be again running in support of Bigmoose to help them to reach their new £15 million target. He will be joined by his son Quinn, who is due to complete a 10km run of his own every day that Nathan spends running. Nathan isn’t oblivious to the size of this staggering run - “It’s going to suck,” he says, “but I know I won’t give up unless I’m unable to walk with a serious injury.” To donate to Nathan on his longest ultramarathon yet and to keep up to date with his running, visit @nathan_ runs_ultras on Instagram.

eginning as a group of friends sharing stories, opening up to each other and helping each other tackle daily challenges over a bottle of wine, Simon Clarke’s Speakeasy Club in Penarth provides a network of support that encourages the community to talk more openly to improve mental health and create a culture where learning, being inquisitive and sharing our emotions is the norm. After being diagnosed in May 2021 with depression and severe anxiety, Simon knew that he had to reassess his priorities. After working for National Governing Bodies in sport for twelve years, he set his sights on creating Speakeasy Club. “In a weird way, although horribly tough at times, it’s been the best thing to ever happen to me,” says Simon, “I was able to stop, reassess my habits and reprioritise things in my life.” With their four core values of authenticity, empathy, fun and inquisitiveness, Speakeasy Club offers a huge range of support networks, events and advice. One look at their website will demonstrate the lengths that Simon has gone to support his community in a quest to make conversations about mental health easier to access - there is an abundance of information that is readily available. Sport, reading, wine-tasting, and speaker talks; Speakeasy Club has no shortage of fun, engaging events that coincide with their mission to get people talking. One aspect is called The Huddle, an ‘online clubhouse’ with well-being in mind designed to make information as relevant and easily accessible as possible. From recommendations on what to watch and read to advice on professional and personal development, The Huddle is a one-stop shop for advice.

Photography by Speakeasy Club: Simon Clarke

Speakeasy Club hosts various events across community venues in which they prioritise “reinvesting back into these vital venues, supporting community clubs and fundraising for fantastic causes.” Specialising in hosting interviews and Q&As with role models, networking events, sporting experiences and more, Speakeasy Club has evolved massively from its humble origins. But, its message and objectives have remained the same. Giving back to the community and helping those around him are still championed by Simon. Since 2022, they have invested £16,130 and counting back into community sports facilities, raised more than £9,350 for charities and engaged with 1,390 people. Most recently, Simon Clarke has launched a podcast that he hosts called ‘Where’s Your Clubhouse?’. His objective is to further destigmatise conversations surrounding mental health, raising awareness of the importance of well-being and mental health in sport and approach difficult conversations in the most supportive and non-judgmental way possible. TOTM Launches in Co-op Nationwide

C

ardiff-based sustainable period brand TOTM (Time of the Month) has launched its products in Co-op stores across the nation.

On a mission to tackle plastic waste and pollution with their range of 100% organic cotton and reusable period products, TOTM will now be stocked in 94 Co-op stores across the UK. They are already supplied by other mainstream retailers like Tesco and Superdrug and have products in over 1,600 stores, but stocking in Co-op, the UK’s leading convenience store, is helping to push TOTM’s desire to provide better, more sustainable ways to manage periods.

greenhouse gases, 88% less water and uses 62% less energy than conventional cotton during the production process. They are also the only period care brand that is not only restricting its plastic waste but also actively helping to recover plastic from the ocean through its partnership with Plastic Bank. The chair of TOTM, Ruby Parmar, said that the inclusion of TOTM products on Co-op shelves “is a huge step forward for us as we continue on our mission to bring sustainable and ethical period care into the mainstream retail space.” She continued to say how the rising popularity of TOTM “just goes to show the increase in interest and commitment now coming from both leading UK retailers, and the wider public too, with regards to considering sustainable period care products.”

The award-winning brand was founded in 2012 by St.John Burke, inspired to create period products that he would be happy for his daughter to use. He wanted to forge a brand that shakes things up in the period care industry, leading the way in the drive to create positive change in championing sustainability, menstrual well-being and ending the stigma around periods. Twelve years later, TOTM is a carbonneutral brand that’s leading the way in sustainable and ethically made period products and in 2022 they won the Sustainable Business Award of the Year at the British Business Awards. Their use of organic cotton produces 94% fewer

iberty Marketing, the Cardiff-based specialist digital marketing agency, has undergone a bold rebrand as a mark of its 15th year in business. By stepping back and reevaluating the ethos and mission of the brand, Liberty is hoping that its rebranding is going to reinvigorate the digital marketing world. In a bid to help expand the agency and secure new clients, the new branding is said to set Liberty apart from its competitors and, according to Group CEO Gareth Morgan, is set to be more of a rebirth than a rebrand. “Our new branding is very different to the agencies we find ourselves competing with and extremely different to what we had previously” he says. “It’s time for a new start for Liberty, and this new brand and messaging shows that we’re gearing up for when the market is fully open again.”

Liberty partnered with the Toward branding team to go back to its roots of honest, no-nonsense digital marketing. In the current digital marketing environment that is often filled with confusing, convoluted schemes, Liberty pushes its transparent approach as a welcome break from others in the market that prioritises profit over the needs of the client. Tom Lloyd, founder of Toward, said that “the old identity didn’t reflect their ambition. It needed more confidence - to believe in itself to stand for something.” In rebranding, Liberty has re-sparked its original flame and embraced its name. Lloyd goes on to look at the new logo, and how it incorporates “what liberty means - freedom, revolution, celebration and a force for good into a logo mark that flies the flag for everything the company stands for.” Liberty currently boasts an impressive client list including Pizza Express, Space NK, ESCP Business School and England Rugby. In addition, all packaging is recyclable, reducing waste and carbon footprint. Now, with the help of the Natwest Accelerator scheme, Louis and Hamish can quickly expand their business even further. The Natwest Accelerator is a six-month programme that supports local entrepreneurs, creating a network of likeminded peers. The scheme gives access to one-on-one business coaching, focused support from speciality experts and allows growing businesses and entrepreneurs access to a wide pool of experience and knowledge. the Natwest Accelerator’s coworking spaces, providing a base for upcoming businesses to work and collaborate in. Louis Phillips emphasises the benefits that the Natwest Accelerator has granted his business: “When we started the Accelerator, we were kind of blown away by a number of different businesses that we would kind of be working with on a weekly basis,” he says. “It’s a great collaborative environment to work with people who have no judgement on your business and can impart their wisdom based on their experiences.” Pikkle is available for team meetings and hosting clients, in-house events and pop-up events where they will bring one or more of their traders to your office or venue. UG™ by LAUGH is a sensory product that is designed to be cuddled, or ‘cwtched’ as we love to say here in Wales. Its long weighted limbs and beating heart emulates the joy of a human hug. You can even connect your bluetooth to HUG and listen to your favourite music! HUG has been developed from academic research led by Professor Cathy Treadaway at Cardiff Metropolitan University. A spin out company, HUG by LAUGH, has brought the product to market in collaboration with Alzheimer’s Society. Also part of the team are HUG by LAUGH’s Managing Director, Dr Jac Fennell and Technical Director, Aidan Taylor.

The team at HUG have collaborated with many people living with dementia and their families, as well as professional carers, to create, develop, and evaluate the HUG design. The team have also worked closely with over 70 organisations, including Alzheimer’s Society and NHS, to develop HUG as an awardwinning product. Their involvement ensures HUG is useful and safe to use at home, in residential care and in hospitals. Chris Maddocks, Ambassador for a number of charities including Alzheimer’s Society, The Lewy Body Society and the National Activity Providers Association is a huge fan of HUG, stating “As a person affected by dementia, I fully endorse HUG… Everybody needs a HUG!”. The research was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Welsh Government. Knowledge gained from two research projects: LAUGH (2015-18) and LAUGH EMPOWERED (2018-2020), have helped HUG create, develop, and evaluate its design. In 2021, HUG was awarded Alzheimer’s Society Accelerator funding that enabled the manufacture of HUG to ensure it was widely available for anyone to buy. The partnership with Alzheimer’s Society means that every HUG sold contributes to future dementia research and design innovation.
