A LETTER FROM TEAM

To the women of Cardiff and beyond, this is for you.

We are so honoured to bring you a Cardiff Life special edition celebrating International Women’s Day.

As a mother, solo-founder business owner leading an entirely female team, I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve captured from cover to cover. The narratives of over 100 remarkable women who embody the spirit of Cardiff are a testament to the strength, resilience and boundless creativity that women bring to our communities, businesses and homes.

This edition is more than a magazine; it’s over 100 stories that reflect the diversity and dynamism of women’s experiences. From the trailblazers breaking ceilings in industries traditionally dominated by men to the unsung heroes whose daily contributions often go unnoticed, we shine a light on the women who make Cardiff the vibrant, inclusive and forward-looking city it is.

We also acknowledge and appreciate the supportive men in our lives, the allies who stand beside us, who champion our causes and who assist us in smashing the glass ceiling - thank you.

In these pages, you will find stories of perseverance, of overcoming obstacles not just as individuals but as a collective force for change. You will read about the pioneers who are redefining what it means to be a woman in the 21st century, who through their actions and words, inspire the next generation to dream bigger, aim higher and fight harder.

But let us also take this moment to reflect on the challenges that still lie ahead. Gender equality remains an elusive goal, with disparities in pay, opportunities and representation persisting across all sectors of society. This International Women’s Day, let us renew our commitment to breaking down these barriers, supporting one another in our aspirations, and celebrating every victory, no matter how small.

As we turn the pages of this special edition, let us remember that each story is a stitch in the larger fabric of our shared history. These narratives are not just about the women of Cardiff; they are about all women, everywhere and the indomitable spirit that drives us towards a more equitable and just world.

To every woman reading this: know that you are valued, your contributions are essential and your potential is limitless. Let us continue to support each other, lift each other and pave the way for those who will come after us.

Here’s to the women of Cardiff, and here’s to women everywhere. May we all thrive, together.

Happy International Women’s Day.

As a travel agency owner and a mother of two girls, my journey as a female entrepreneur has significantly shaped both my personal and professional life. Navigating societal expectations and embracing the unique challenges and opportunities that come with being a woman, every aspect of my identity has played a crucial role in my development.

As a female business owner, my journey has been filled with exciting opportunities and challenges. One significant hurdle I faced as a woman in the travel industry was breaking through gender stereotypes and gaining recognition as a credible business owner, especially with two children. At the beginning of my journey, I found it challenging to be taken seriously at networking events. Comments from others, mainly men, like “Oh, you’re expecting a baby? You won’t be working next year then?” were disheartening and led me to eventually stop attending these sorts of events. This scepticism even led me to doubt my own capabilities as a working mother.

Thankfully, a turning point came when I discovered women’s networking events. This was a game-changer. The support and camaraderie among women in these spaces were incredibly powerful. I realised the importance of women supporting women and it completely transformed my experience as a business owner. The connections made in these environments not only provided valuable insights and advice but also boosted my confidence and reaffirmed my capabilities as a working mother. The shift from scepticism to empowerment within these women-focused spaces has been instrumental in overcoming the challenges I initially faced in the travel industry.

Balancing the roles of a mother and a business owner has transformed my career, prompting me to constantly evaluate the delicate equilibrium between family time and business expansion. Initially returning from maternity leave on a part-time basis, I soon realised that a few days a week weren’t sufficient to propel my business forward. Faced with a difficult decision, I opted to place my daughter in nursery almost full time, a choice laden with the inevitable “mum guilt.” However, the success of my business has not only alleviated some of that guilt but has also afforded me the means to provide enriching experiences for my children.

To find out more about The Travel Business, visit: https://thetravelbusiness.co.uk/

Creating balance is crucial to me as a mum. Setting clear boundaries, including non-traditional office hours, has allowed me to manage the demands of both family and business life. Delegating tasks - a challenging lesson for this self-professed control freak - has proven instrumental in business growth, thanks to a capable and supportive team.

Prioritising tasks and recognising when to pause for the day are essential components of my work-life balance strategy. Embracing short breaks, even a 5-minute walk away from the office, provides valuable mental respite. I’ve also incorporated self-care into my routine, elevating my health and fitness to a status equal to my roles as a mother and manager. Recognising that achieving a perfect balance is an ongoing challenge, I’m aware of the importance of regularly reassessing and adjusting my strategies to align my professional and personal life with my overall well-being.

THE WOMEN BACKING WOMEN

Some of Wales’ most successful female entrepreneurs and business leaders are working together to support other women in the early-stage investment community in Wales.

Women Angels of Wales (WAW) is a business angel investment syndicate for women that was set up in 2022 by Carol Hall, Investment Manager for Angels Invest Wales. It is now jointly supported by the British Business Bank and the syndicate has access to co-investment of up to £250,000 for each deal from the Development Bank of Wales’s £8 million Wales Angel Co-Investment Fund.

With 47 members, WAW is Wales’ first all-female angel investor syndicate. Three lead investors include experienced business angel Jill Jones who has a background in optometry and property along with investment banker Sharon Pipe

and insurance industry specialist Rachel Ashley. Their first investment was announced in late 2023 with £60,000 for Newport-based Stratigens, a SaaS product which brings together labour market, economics and location data to provide the insight businesses need to shape radically smarter decisions.

Alison Ettridge is the Chief Executive and Chief Believer of Stratigens. She said: “I’m delighted to have received the backing from Women Angels of Wales. They have varied and extensive experience as business leaders and investors and getting their support means so much more than just capital investment alone – it’s a mark of confidence and trust from respected businesswomen from across Wales.”

Carol Hall, Investment Manager for Angels Invest Wales, said: “Women angels have a critical role to play in supporting female entrepreneurship, particularly as research shows that women are much more likely to invest in female-founded companies.

“By encouraging more women to become angel investors, we allow them to support the businesses that matter to them and to create new sources of capital for innovative businesses. That’s why building the angel ecosystem in Wales is a priority for us and we’re always pleased to welcome new members to the group. We know that angel investment works best when investors work together in syndicates to pool skills, share knowledge and balance risk. It generates more firepower, particularly as we can then use our equity co-investment fund to leverage syndicated deals.”

The £8 million Wales Angel Co-investment Fund provides Welsh businesses with a key source of alternative finance through the encouragement of more active angel investment. The five-year fund supports the creation of angel syndicates and networks across Wales by providing loans and equity up to £250,000 to investors looking for co-investment.

MEN HOLD THE KEYS

Growing up in the Vale and attending school in Cardiff, Alys Calrton eventually found herself in Edinburgh for university. The allure of the legal world called, leading her to Nottingham, where she spent 12 years honing her skills as a corporate solicitor. However, as her second son entered the world, the pull of home became undeniable. A strategic move during maternity leave paved the way for a career shift. Joining Capital Law, she not only headed the team but also delved into firm strategy and client relationships.

Having experienced coaching that unveiled an opportunity to collaborate with senior lawyers and engage in conversations about their personal challenges, Alys decided to depart from the legal profession just as the pandemic unfolded. Currently, Alys offers trusted partner services to leaders globally. Simultaneously, she took on roles as a non-executive director and chair of the Football Association of Wales, along with a position as a judge in the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales.

Acknowledging her largely untroubled journey regarding gender-related challenges, Alys attributes this to a supportive environment. She underlines the importance of men understanding their role in supporting women’s progress in the workplace, recognising privilege and using it to assist those who need it. While she believes men hold the keys to societal change, she emphasises that it’s not women’s sole responsibility to fix these issues.

Alys’ perspective on advancing gender equality revolves around affordable childcare and a shift in organisational focus from confidence to competence in performance assessments. She advocates for acknowledging and valuing women’s skills and contributions, particularly in addressing the gender pay gap within the legal profession, where women making partner positions is a key issue.

Despite challenges related to childcare and stereotypical expectations, Alys sees immense potential in the growth of women’s football, providing opportunities for girls and women in various roles. Her journey, marked by a lack of selfdoubt and seizing opportunities, serves as a testament to the importance of being attuned to possibilities.

CARDIFF ' S UNSUNG

Join us as we delve into the lives of women who prioritise others over themselves and discover the essence of their contributions. Let's gain an understanding of the crucial role they play in shaping Cardiff and beyond.

Lisa Power

Debbie Beadle

Molly Fenton

Cardiff resident Lisa Power has dedicated herself to LGBTQ+ rights, HIV and sexual health advocacy since the 1980s. A founding member of Stonewall and the former General Secretary of the International Lesbian and Gay Association, Lisa made history as the first lesbian or gay individual to address the United Nations in support of gay rights.

Lisa, who volunteered at Switchboard (formerly London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard), witnessed the profound impact of HIV and AIDS in the 1980s, sparking her enduring commitment to advocating for individuals living with HIV over the decades.

Cardiff Women’s Aid, led by CEO Debbie Beadle, is the first Women’s Aid offering refuge in Cardiff and Wales, operating as a Women’s Equality organisation. Debbie’s extensive background in children’s rights and working with victims of trafficking has fueled her passion for the sector, leading to her progression to CEO.

Cardiff Women’s Aid provides a 24-hour helpline and support from crisis workers. The organisation offers refuge, accommodation, and emergency housing, guiding individuals through transitions to more permanent homes. Their dedicated children’s team addresses both domestic abuse situations and parent violence.

Molly Fenton, a 19-year-old student from Cardiff, founded the ‘Love Your Period Campaign’ aged 17, to address period poverty and stigma for students in Wales. She initiated the campaign to ensure free access to period products for her peers, sparking her commitment to reducing stigma and enhancing menstruation education.

Over the past two years, Molly has undertaken various projects, including homeless collections, donating reusable products to NHS staff during the pandemic and establishing an advice line for parents and children.

In the initial stages of her professional journey, she often heard dismissive remarks like “silly little girl” more frequently than her own name. As time has passed, she has come to embrace being a woman in this space, turning what was once a hurdle into an asset. Currently collaborating with the Welsh Government, Molly is working on a strategic action plan, aiming to make menstrual products and services more accessible, with the goal of eradicating period poverty by 2026.

Chloe’s primary passion in life is helping others, with a particular focus on supporting young people, especially young women. Engaging regularly with schools, she generously gives her time to speak to young women and offers guidance to those aspiring to enter the charity sector.

Linda James, a mother to three sons, established BulliesOut in May 2006 with a firm commitment to preventing children’s lives from being marred by bullying, drawing from her own experiences. Over the years, Linda has transformed BulliesOut from a basic web-based support service into a provider of extensive workshops and training programs for schools across the UK.

With a background in the private sector overseeing national teams and substantial budgets, Linda made a career change by dedicating her energy, skills and expertise to lead BulliesOut. Under her guidance, the charity has become an award-winning success, offering comfort, knowledge and life-saving skills to both those facing bullying and their supporters. In 2014, Linda was awarded an MBE for her dedication.

Game-Changers

Let’s cheer for the incredible Welsh women who are changing the game in the world of sports! From Olympic athletes to presenters, broadcasters and CEOs, these women redefine what it means to be a woman in sport. Their drive and passion inspire us all and prove that limits are made to be challenged.

1 Hannah Mills OBE

As Wales’ most successful Olympian and the most successful female sailor in Olympic history, Hannah Mills is truly an inspiration. She began sailing at age eight in Cardiff and the rest is history! Off of the water, Hannah is a sustainability champion and an International Olympic Committee Sustainability Ambassador. In 2019, she launched The Big Plastic Pledge, an athlete movement to eradicate single-use plastics and co-founded Athletes of the World, which campaigns for positive impact around climate change. In 2017, she was awarded an MBE and most recently in 2022 was given an OBE for her continued services to sailing and the environment.

2 Laura-Jane Jones

Sports broadcaster and CEO of Blonde Ambition Media, Laura-Jane Jones has forged an incredible career in a traditionally male-dominated field. Laura-Jane has been working in professional rugby for over fifteen years as a reporter, producer and co-host of Try Hards, a “rugby podcast with a female twist”. She’s a strong advocate for women’s visibility in sports and calls for a united front in calling for better representation. Laura-Jane notes that “You’ll often feel in competition with other women around you. It’s taken shifts in all mindsets to recognise we’re better united than competing.”

3 Vicki Sutton

Vicki Sutton is the CEO of the formidable Cardiff Dragons Group and Wales Netball. Under her leadership, both organisations have flourished and continue to foster talent and promote Welsh netball at all levels. With her strategic vision and dedication, Sutton has propelled Cardiff Dragons and Wales Netball to new heights. Not one to back down from a challenge, Vicki firmly believes that change starts from the top. “Leaders have to model inclusivity,” she says, “No good climbing the ladder then shutting the trap door behind them at the top.”

4 Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson

Tanni Grey Thompson has the sporting legacy of being one of Britain’s greatest Paralympic athletes. Over five Paralympic Games competing in wheelchair racing, she was awarded eleven gold medals, four silvers and a bronze. If that wasn’t enough, Tanni has also won 13 World Championship medals, broken over 30 world records and is the six-time winner of the London Wheelchair Marathon. Most recently, Tanni became an independent cross-bench Peer in the House of Lords and plays an active role in promoting sports for disabled people.

is an extraordinarily talented player and Captain for Cardiff Dragons. Nia defied limits by merging an incredibly successful international netball career with an equally successful professional football career. In a testament to her versatility, since 2018 Jones has been a regular pundit and co-commentator at Welsh International matches on behalf of BBC Sport Wales, having also attended the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Though it can prove difficult to be one of only a few female commenters on BBC Wales’ Male fixtures, Jones uses that pressure as she would as an athlete - as an even bigger drive to succeed.

6 Gabriella Jukes

Gabriella Jukes is a Welsh bilingual sports presenter and reporter whose versatility knows no bounds. Honoured as a Rising Host for Welsh Fire during The Hundred 2022 at Sophia Gardens, she also presents ‘Swans TV Live’ at Swansea City AFC and makes regular contributions to BBC Sport Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and ‘The Women’s Football Show’. Proudly Welsh-speaking, she reports for S4C’s Sgorio, Heno and Prynhawn Da. Additionally, she co-hosts the award-nominated podcast ‘She Has A Goal In Mind’, inspiring women in sports and contributed to the Euros 2022 ‘Womxn Who Play’ campaign.

Rebecca Edwards-Symmons

Recently appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Commonwealth Games Wales, Rebecca is making waves in Welsh sport as she leads Team Wales, spearheading strategic initiatives and ensuring that Wales is a force to be reckoned with on the world stage of sport. As a leading woman in Welsh sport, Rebecca is optimistic about the future and looks fondly on the last year, recognising that “there are more female leaders in sport than ever before, which is amazing to see. The last twelve months have been huge and it’s an exciting time for us women in sports leadership.”

Abi Tierney

In 2023, Abi Tierney made history by becoming the first woman appointed as chief executive of the Welsh Rugby Union. With experience spanning the public and private sectors, Abi brings a wealth of operational and strategic expertise to her new role. Her appointment signifies a monumental shift in the landscape of Welsh rugby, placing women at the forefront of this prestigious organisation. Abi’s leadership not only breaks barriers but also reinforces the vital contribution of women in shaping the future of Welsh rugby, marking a significant milestone in the sport’s history.

TAPPING INTO SUCCESS

WITH THE TAP END

Justine Bullock is co-creator and designer at The Tap End, a well-acclaimed bathroom design and supply studio that has earned numerous awards for its innovative approach to bathroom design. The studio not only provides top-notch design services but also manages installations through employed fitters or a carefully selected list of recommended professionals.

Embracing her femininity, Justine attributes her success to independence and self-sufficiency, shaped by a life without traditional male role models. Consciously placing herself in empowering environments, Justine advocates for women to rely on intuition and instincts in navigating their careers. She champions breaking away from roles that hinder women’s progress and celebrates the strength found in challenging societal norms.

One significant challenge in Justine’s journey has been navigating societal expectations around motherhood. Choosing to remain childless by choice, she faces questions and assumptions but stands steadfast in her convictions, celebrating a fulfilling personal and professional life.

Inspired by the growing number of women entrepreneurs, Justine recognises the challenges they encounter in the business world. She underscores the importance of community and support among women, showcasing her strong team at The Tap End. Acknowledging progress in addressing the gender pay gap, Justine emphasises the need for continued efforts, particularly in traditionally male-dominated sectors. Her commitment to equal opportunities is evident in her aspiration to include female tradespeople at The Tap End.

Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey with The Tap End, Justine challenges stereotypes about age and gender.

Despite initial scepticism about her and her business partner Lynda’s ages, they have successfully built two businesses, earned national awards and gained recognition in prestigious interior design magazines.

In offering advice, Justine encourages women and young girls to align themselves with opportunities that match their aspirations, breaking limiting thoughts and pursuing goals relentlessly. For women aiming to enter male-dominated industries, she advises seeking out companies offering equal opportunities and avoiding those that may hinder their progress.

Katherine jenkins

Katherine Jenkins OBE has made her mark on the world of music in Wales and beyond. In this conversation, she delves into being a woman in business, making it in the music industry and the importance of bringing women into the fold this International Women’s Day.

What are your thoughts on the importance of celebrating International Women's Day?

It’s a wonderful day to celebrate all of the amazing women that we have in our lives. I’m fortunate that I’m surrounded by incredible, inspirational women: my friends, family and work life. But, the wider picture is to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness for equality and have a conversation about gender disparity. The overall message of the day is really important.

Can you tell us a bit about Cygnet and how it's geared toward the sisterhood of gin lovers?

Cygnet is an ultra-premium gin brand named after the baby swan - our home is in Swansea so it has Welsh roots. The women in my family all love their gin, but we’ve never had a loyalty to one brand. We discovered that gin brands fall into two categories; either male-dominated or if aimed at women, they’re pink, fluffy and sugary. There wasn’t one that was speaking to me, so I wanted to create a product that I knew was the best in class and uses the best ingredients. Then there’s the sisterhood - we work hard in whatever we’re doing, so when you have that drink you deserve the best.

International Women's Day encourages us to challenge stereotypes. How have you overcome any stereotypes or challenges in your career?

From the very beginning, I’ve found that there’s a disparity in how work ethic is viewed. If you’re a man with high standards and a great work ethic then you’re professional. If you’re a woman, it’s ambitious, or even

30 | Cardiff Life

a derogatory term like diva-ish. In the past, if any of those terms were thrown at me, I found it embarrassing. Twenty years later, I’m really proud that I set those boundaries because holding myself to my standards. Young women shouldn’t be afraid to set those standards. Hold yourself to account for how you want to be viewed decades in the future.

Which women have supported or inspired you in your career?

One of them is my mum; she’s so strong and majorly instilled work ethic in my sister and I. She would say to us at a young age, “Girls, it’s up to you. As long as you put the hard work in, you can achieve anything and you can do anything.” I remember that conversation so clearly and I’m so grateful to her, she was an amazing role model.

My singing teacher, Beatrice Unsworth, was like a second mother to me. Moving to London when I was eighteen to study at the Royal Academy of Music was a big shock to the system and she helped so much. Aside from giving me the technique that I needed for my profession, she was a great comfort and somebody who I admired.

Also, being in a female-founded company, it’s really important to me that a large portion of our team are women and that we have women at the top. They’re all phenomenal. They inspire me to do more and I love being on this team with them.

How can women use their platforms to advocate for positive change?

From a young age, I remember my mum involving my sister and me in charity and instilling the belief that if you are

lucky enough to have success in your life, then you have a responsibility to pay that back into the world. When you’re in the public eye you have a different kind of platform that people will listen to, so it’s about choosing genuinely authentic causes. In my instance, I try to choose the things that are very close to me so I can give them my all and amplify their message to the best of my ability.

Can you share a moment in your career that you are particularly proud of as a woman?

There are two that come to mind. One was when Classic FM had an award that they gave to the biggest-selling classical artist of the last century. I didn’t even know that existed, so it was a big shock when they gave that to me! The fact that it went to a woman was really exciting. Secondly, I was recently invited by the Admiral of the Navy to be the sponsor of the new HMS Cardiff warship, and again what I’m proud of is the break in tradition as HMS Cardiff is the first time they’re giving the sponsorship to a civilian. I’ve been involved with the military for twenty years and it always feels like such a privilege to be associated with and spend time with them.

What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is about inspiring inclusion. One of the things I talk about with Aaliyah, my daughter, is that if you see someone on the edge of a situation looking uncomfortable or lonely, be the girl that goes over and says, “Hey, come be with us. Come talk with us.” If I’m in a lift and I see a woman, I like to say, “Oh, you look amazing today.” I like to have that positive energy. It’s amazing, you smile at one person and they go on to smile at ten other people that day.

Something that I dislike reading about in the press is how women are pitted against each other. In my experience in business, it’s been the exact opposite. I think that women in business are there to have each other’s backs and hold each other up.

Take as many opportunities as you can. Join amateur operatics, local shows or competitions. It’s all about the experiences that you can get so that when an opportunity comes your way you can be as prepared as possible. Once the ball starts rolling, know who you are and be yourself. As it was said to me at the time, if you’re not yourself and you’re looking for a career with longevity, it’s a really hard act to keep up. Have honesty at the core of everything you do.

Leyli Homanyoofar, raised in Fairwater with a Welsh mother and an Iranian father, has achieved significant recognition for her contributions to the culinary world. She secured a spot on CODE’s prestigious list of the 100 Most Influential Women in Hospitality not just once, but twice.

Beginning her culinary journey at 15 as a waitress in a family friend’s restaurant in Cardiff, Leyli’s passion for the kitchen grew as she crafted desserts and immersed herself in the culinary world. This dedication ultimately led to the creation of Bab Haus in 2018, specialising in modern BBQ inspired by Texas, Mexico and the Middle East. With two established locations, Bab Haus HQ ‘Smoke Shop’ in Bedwas and Bab Haus Mex in Goodsheds Barry, Leyli is set to open a third in Ffos Caerffili this month.

Starting at a Marston’s pub with no prior exposure to the food industry, Simren Vedi gained valuable skills under the guidance of an exceptional Head Chef, who was classically French trained. Today, Simren, having represented Wales on Great British Menu, holds the position of Head Chef at Kin+Ilk. Sustainability is a core focus with Simren using local Welsh produce in all her culinary creations.

When addressing the crucial changes needed for gender equality in the workplace, Simren emphasises the necessity of tough conversations about gender, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. She advocates for implementing zero-tolerance policies, pay transparency measures and safe reporting avenues to combat issues like pay gaps, abuse, bullying and intimidation in the hospitality industry.

Furloughed during lockdown, Rhian Jones found her passion for baking at her parents’ home in Heath and never looked back. She launched Elyse Bakes in July 2020, leading her to eventually leave her retail job due to overwhelming demand for her cakes and cupcakes.

In under two years, Rhian opened Green Door Bakery in Cyncoed Village. Inspired by her mum, who owned her own business, Rhian emphasises the importance of empowering women in business and dispelling assumptions about male involvement. She highlights the need for women to have a voice, be acknowledged for their capabilities and own and run businesses without facing unwarranted questions, such as “is this your dad’s business?”

Meet Laura Davenport, the co-owner and driving force behind The Posh Fish and Chip Company and Posh on Wheels. Juggling roles in socials, marketing, new ventures and overall business coordination, Laura ensures the culinary empire runs seamlessly.

With a background in project management from corporate giants like Dyson, Laura’s strategic touch is evident. Her recent triumph includes acquiring a massive fish and chip truck, adapting to changing customer habits. This move has opened doors to exciting opportunities, including potential contracts with a top Cardiff sports ground and participation in major festivals this year.

The Posh Fish and Chip Company secured a spot in the top 40 best fish and chip takeaways in the UK by the National Federation of Fish Friers and a recent shortlisting in the Cardiff Life Awards for the best restaurant title.

CHANNELLING PAIN & GRIEF TO HELP OTHERS

My journey is marked by loss, grief, and pain, which I’ve transformed into a force propelling me forward with faith to create something beautiful - Norah Rose Staging. It’s a story of transformation, where a changed mindset became the driving force behind my mission to inspire others to navigate their tumultuous seas.

After a turbulent childhood filled with fear and violence, I found myself navigating a labyrinth of emotions after a profound loss at 17 years old - a loss no child should experience, the loss of my dad, Dennis.

Seeking to fill the void, I turned to drugs and alcohol, spiralling into a depressive storm and losing myself for several years before settling into a career in IT Project Delivery. However, I knew something was missing, a feeling cemented by yet another significant loss during lockdown - my Grandmother, Norah. In those dark moments, Norah Rose’s seeds were planted. In the depths of despair, a glimmer of inspiration took root, evolving into a vision to channel my pain into something purposeful.

Norah Rose Staging emerged as more than just a project; it became a testament to resilience, a living embodiment of the power of transformation following even more loss - three recurrent pregnancy losses with my partner. I found solace and purpose in Getting People Dressed, which truly saved me.

The early days were daunting and some still are. I began to shape Norah Rose Staging from the raw materials of my pain, a delicate process of honouring the past and embracing the future with faith.

I quickly discovered my true potential in bringing vision to life, inspiring other women to leap forward, using their pain as fuel to create outstanding stories of their own. The mindset shift became the cornerstone of Norah Rose’s philosophy - ever the optimist and beacon of light in times of despair!

The act of creation became therapeutic, a form of alchemy that became addictive, proving that even in the most barren landscapes, beauty can thrive! “Vulnerability is my superpower; my mission is to inspire those who’ve weathered their own storms.”

The pain that once consumed me became the wellspring of compassion that fueled Norah Rose Staging, and it will continue to do so as the mission grows. I, along with Norah Rose, have gained an excellent reputation as multi-award-winning property staging experts across South Wales and beyond, continuing to battle mindset demons daily.

SHE RUNS: CARDIFF

I’m Kate Morgan, Chair of She Runs: Cardiff. Five years ago, a shared passion for promoting the joy of running brought together a group of women in Cardiff. This dynamic collective envisioned a space where women could come together, not only to run but to support, inspire and celebrate each other. Thus, She Runs: Cardiff was born.

Female participation in running has seen a remarkable surge and we are proud to contribute to this movement. She Runs: Cardiff is designed to be a safe haven, particularly for beginners, where every woman, regardless of pace or experience, is not just welcomed but celebrated.

Our ethos revolves around creating a supportive, inclusive and friendly environment for women to run, fostering not just physical health but overall well-being and happiness. In the heart of Cardiff, we organise bi-weekly social runs, guided by our dedicated Leadership in Running Fitness (LIRF) leaders. From speed to hill and trail runs, we cater to all levels of running enthusiasts. Our highly successful

Walk2Run program further ensures that beginners find their stride in a welcoming community.

What makes She Runs: Cardiff truly special is our commitment to the broader local running community. Volunteering at local ParkRuns and raising over £8000 in the past year for our charity partner, Bigmoose, showcases our dedication to making a positive impact beyond our group.

As we align with the 2024 International Women’s Day theme #inspireinclusion, our values echo the essence of this celebration. She Runs: Cardiff strives to deliver a sprinkle of belonging and a burst of empowerment to its members.

As International Women’s Day approaches, it’s crucial to celebrate the strength, resilience and well-being of women in all aspects of life. In the realm of fitness, one form of exercise stands out as particularly transformative for women of all ages – Reformer Pilates.

At Stiwdio Glow, we recognise that Reformer Pilates is not just a workout; it’s a holistic approach to fitness that empowers women by focusing on core strength, pelvic floor health and mindfulness. The unique design of the reformer bed allows

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH REFORMER PILATES

Glow Method Co-Founder: The Glow Method at Home https://www.stiwdioglow.co.uk/

for individualised support and challenge within the same class, catering to the diverse needs of women.

The emphasis on core and pelvic floor muscles, coupled with mindfulness, addresses specific needs that are often overlooked in traditional exercise routines. In our dedicated women-only classes, we concentrate on enhancing core strength, refining posture and increasing flexibility while correcting muscle imbalances.

The low-impact nature of Reformer Pilates is gentle on joints, making it suitable for women at all stages of life. Whether prenatal, postnatal, or peri/post-menopausal, women can reap the rewards of this exercise, ensuring mobile and safe joints while fortifying muscles and bones. This is especially valuable for those managing endometriosis or dealing with core/pelvic floor-related concerns or dysfunction.

The secret to the effectiveness of Reformer Pilates lies in the combination of movements with breathwork and correct alignment. This not only results in a physically strong workout but also cultivates a mindful connection between the body and mind. Pilates, at its core, promotes a healthy mind alongside a healthy body.

Stiwdio Glow takes pride in the belief that our Reformer Pilates classes not only transform women’s bodies but also elevate their confidence. Our classes are rooted in Pilates principles, ensuring a robust workout that respects both the physical and mental aspects of well-being.

We invite women from all walks of life to experience the lifechanging benefits of Reformer Pilates – a journey towards empowerment, inside and out.

MAKING WAVES AND SHATTERING STEREOTYPES

48 | Cardiff Life columnist

On 13 December 2023, I left San Sebastian de la Gomera in the Canary Islands to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic to Antigua. Taking part in the World’s Toughest Row – Atlantic 2023, I was part of Ace of Blades – a four-woman team from Cardiff, Bristol and Cheltenham. We took 47 days, 7 hours and 27 minutes to complete the crossing, encountering 30-ft waves 30-knot winds and battling sea sickness and multiple equipment failures.

As a medical editor and translator living in suburban Cardiff, I consider myself a pretty normal woman. However, I believe my experience of preparing for and then completing an ocean row has been shaped by my being a woman.

Before the row, we received some surprising reactions from members of the public. By way of example, one man at the Cheltenham Science Festival dryly remarked, “Four women in one boat? Christ, good luck”. Men and women alike were surprised at the technical aspects we either already had a good grasp of or were receiving training on, including navigation, marine electrics and watermaker maintenance.

Another challenge was the concept of taking time away from work for a reason other than having children. I’m not sure any of our workplaces had a policy in place for that, but it’s been validating working with them to be given the freedom to go away for a while. Granted, it was only for two to three months, but it means a lot that my company supported me from the get-go. For me, this row was about my personal growth and learning new skills, and I hope that everyone around me will see the benefits going forward.

With the race in its tenth year, this edition saw the highest number of female participants ever (38 of a total of 98). I am blown away by the three of those women with whom I have just spent 7 weeks with at sea. We demonstrated real tenacity over the three years of preparation and had a real respect for one another’s strengths. Marine authority documentation, technical boat equipment, sea skills, website building, sponsorship chasing (we were fully funded)…you name it, there was nothing we couldn’t tackle as a team.

The same goes for our time at sea. We had myriad technical issues, but together we overcame it all, reached Antigua safely and, importantly, remain just as good friends as when we started. The capabilities and resilience of my crewmates Beth, Laura and Kit know no bounds and I’m fiercely proud to have rowed an ocean with them.

I hope that the Ace of Blades experience of rowing the Atlantic will show other women and girls that they can take on their own adventures, whatever form that may take. Before and since the row, we’ve been called ‘brave’ and ‘inspiring’. As a normal woman, I find it hard to accept those descriptors –I’m not a professional athlete or adventurer breaking records left, right and centre. But, if one day a niece or a friend’s daughter finds my story fascinating and decides they could go off and do something, then my work here is done. I’d like there to be more adventurous but normal women around to set others’ minds whirring.

Do not let being a woman be a reason to hold yourself back. If someone tells you that something will be harder or impossible because you are female, let that be the fire in your belly to prove them wrong. We can do anything!

To keep up with the Ace of Blades team, you can follow their journey here: https://www.teamaceofblades.com/

BREAKING THE STIGMA: LIVING WITH HIV

Recognise this artwork that was on James Street, Cardiff? In 2021, Mercy Lusungu Shibemba MBE was the face of Cardiff and Vale’s Fast Track HIV Awareness Campaign.

Mercy, at the age of 23, entered the world with HIV as a lifelong companion. During her upbringing, she assumed that everyone shared the routine of quarterly NHS appointments and a medical team that felt like an extended family. However, she later discovered that this wasn’t the universal experience, realising that she was sharing hospital waiting rooms with others on a similar journey of living with HIV.

Reflecting on the hours spent in those waiting rooms, she observed a parallel existence with others facing the same challenges, yet a profound lack of connection due to the stigma keeping people apart. The three letters, HIV, have provided a silent soundtrack throughout her life. Some days, its presence goes unnoticed, while on others, it serves as a constant reminder.

The weight of HIV stigma forced those living with the virus into an uncomfortable silence. Society’s inclination to avoid challenging conversations only intensified this silence – a coping mechanism but not a route to flourishing. Mercy assumed control of her journey to thrive, confronting the silence and summoning the courage to speak out.

Mercy’s unwavering dedication and tireless efforts as an acclaimed activist and advocate for children and young people living with HIV have left an enduring impact on numerous lives. Through her passion and commitment, Mercy has been a defender of the rights and wellbeing of young individuals, ensuring they possess a voice and the empowerment to thrive. In acknowledgment of these efforts, Mercy received an MBE last year.

For Mercy, living with HIV is an integral part of her reality and she is determined to reclaim a path to be 100% authentically herself, positive and thriving.

Cardiff is accepting of all ambition but this month we want to celebrate women, in particular, women within the creative sector. From the better-known talents like Dame Shirley Bassey (1) and Ruth Jones, Cardiff has an underbelly of women who work hard for the city and dedicate their lives to the arts and celebration of creativity.

Our city is known for its contribution and dedication to the art of television. Bad Wolf is a leading production company founded in 2015 by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner MBE (2). Tranter is one of the most consistently successful and celebrated television producers in the UK. She is a recipient of the BAFTA Special Award for services to the industry and an honorary fellow of the Royal Television Society. Julie Gardner is an award-winning television producer and in 2014, received an MBE for her contribution to the growth of the television industry in Wales. Both women have pioneered to make Cardiff and Wales a prominent location for film and television production.

Cardiff has a sea of women who work as actors in both theatre and film. Cardiff-born Rakie Ayola (3) is known for her work in theatre, television and radio. In 2023, Rakie was the 18th recipient of the prestigious BAFTA Cymru Siân Phillips Award. Film director, Rungano Nyoni (4), was born in Zambia but moved to Wales as a child. Her first film won a BAFTA Cymru in 2010 and from there, her work has gone on to be praised at film festivals across the world. In 2018, she won a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut for her film ‘I AM NOT A WITCH’.

Let’s not forget about Cardiff’s thriving musical scene. Artist Cerys Matthews MBE (5), a musician, author and broadcaster, founded the Good Life Experience festival in 2014 and was awarded an inaugural St David Award for her services to culture from the First Minister of Wales. In the same year, Cerys was awarded an MBE for her services to music.

Poetry and art both resonate with the Welsh people, known for our beautiful Celtic language. Gwyneth Denver Davies MBE (6) is a Welsh poet, who was the inaugural National Poet of Wales in 2005. She is one of the most prominent Welsh poets of her generation and the first writer to take up the Welsh Laureateship. She wrote the bilingual words that can be seen shining on the Wales Millennium Centre, in six-foot-high stained glass letters, which is rumoured to be the biggest poem in the world.

Cardiff born and bred, Polly James (7) is an award-winning radio DJ, host and voiceover artist. After four years on Absolute Radio, Polly moved to host South Wales’ Capital Breakfast with co-host Matt, dominating for seven years and clinching double Best Breakfast show wins at the Arqiva awards. You can now catch her on the airwaves every weekend afternoon on Radio X.

Breaking down barriers and advocating for equality, art is a statement and can change the world. Rosaleen (Rosie) MoriartySimmonds OBE (8) is a Welsh author, artist and disability rights campaigner. She was appointed O.B.E. in the 2015 New Year Honours “For Services to the Equality and Rights of Disabled People”. She is an internationally recognised, award-winning Mouth Painting Artist who in December 2023 had her portrait showcased at the Senedd to mark the International Day of Disabled People.

These women have contributed to Wales’ creativity but they are nowhere near the only ones. Cardiff has a never-ending sea of talented individuals who strive to get their voices heard, Cardiff will listen and we’re excited for the next generation of women to thrive in our city.

Mountaineering has traditionally been an activity where there are more men than women. In 2007 when I was attempting to become the first Welsh woman to climb Mount Everest, there were many stereotypes that I needed to overcome.

People were quick to judge what I might or might not be able to do. There was an assumption that you needed to be tall, strong and powerful to succeed in a high-altitude environment. However, I already proved that in the expedition world, this did not necessarily need to be the case.

In 2005 I was a member of the Pink Lady PoleCats team. We were a team of three women who became the first all-female team to complete the Polar Challenge, a 360-mile race to the Magnetic North Pole. On paper, we were not the fittest, fastest or strongest team in the competition but we proved that with teamwork, discipline, a flexible strategy, a focus on marginal gains and good decision-making, we could be competitive. We completed the race in 6th position out of 16 teams.

To pursue a goal when some sceptics and people doubt you is challenging. It takes energy, belief and resilience to get back up when knocked down. There were so many times when I could have quit my journey to the summit of Everest, and many of those occasions were before I had even left Wales.

Finding your purpose, developing your team and practicing a growth mindset is essential - and that’s not unique to mountaineering. I have now delivered over 500 talks around the globe and it’s always my goal to demonstrate why we should aim high and how we can overcome seemingly impenetrable obstacles.

Despite this, my most significant endurance challenge is my foray into motherhood. Even the training for and conquering Everest couldn’t prepare me for the euphoric highs and the lack of sleep I’ve experienced since the birth of my children.

Balancing work, family, and personal pursuits can be a challenge with my and my husband’s varied schedules. To navigate this, we’ve adopted some strategies: say no to things, have a ‘kitchen disco’ (the kids love it and so do we), get outside as a family when possible and be strict with how long you’re spending on social media - it eats up precious time.
