or 127 years, Westbourne has led the education landscape, ranked 1st in the UK for 5 consecutive years (Daily Telegraph), and voted No.1 IB Sixth Form. Proudly offering the IB Diploma at Sixth Form in the UK as well as in schools in Singapore and Sydney, students are guided to become the leaders of the future in STEM and Business, excelling on the global stage.

Lisa Phillips, Westbourne’s Academic Director, explains how the IB Diploma gives students a unique edge over their A Level peers. “Taught in 159 countries in the world, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme has seen a dramatic increase in popularity in the UK over recent years. Its unique approach to learning and selfdevelopment goes far beyond what is taught by traditional A Levels, and university admissions teams are now actively seeking IB Diploma candidates for their most competitive degree courses. The IB Diploma encourages students to be critical thinkers, open-minded and reflective. Rather than being taught to memorise and recount facts, what to think, they are taught how to think, analysing information, evaluating arguments and drawing conclusions based on evidence. The IB challenges students to be intellectually curious, nurturing invaluable skills for university and beyond.

Studying Broader and Deeper

Whilst at A Level, students take individual subjects, often weighted towards the sciences or the humanities, IB students complete a broad

range of subjects spanning the humanities, sciences, mathematics and the visual arts. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that they are well-rounded, equipped with a diverse skill set. The IB also places great emphasis on the development of language skills, essential for communication in our increasingly globalised world.

Nurturing Leadership

Another defining aspect is the emphasis on community and extracurricular activities, including volunteering, fundraising and internships. This part of the programme encourages the development of leadership skills, independence and a sense of social responsibility - transferable skills that are highly prized by university admissions tutors. Students also write a 4,000-word university-style extended essay, which undoubtedly makes them stand out.

The Gold Standard in Sixth Form Education

Westbourne offers the world’s first truly global network of IB schools, with IB colleges in Sydney, Singapore and Penarth. Supported by the latest innovative technology, our students work together globally, collaborating in real-time to share ideas, research and best practice across continents. Immersive global exchange trips ensure that they build a lifelong network of like-minded peers, for both support and inspiration. The success of our approach is evident in the outstanding achievements of our students. 90% of our graduates gain entry to prestigious universities around the world, including the elite Russell Group and international equivalents. Pursuing careers in fields such as engineering, medicine, law and business, they are poised to make a transformative impact not just in this country, but globally, as the leaders of the future. And that’s the IB difference.”

FESTIVAL D OF LIGHTS Diwali is the annual Festival of Lights, celebrated by thousands of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains all across the world. With festivities spanning over five days, this year's celebrations will kick off on November 10th and continue until November 15th! Photography by Shree Swaminarayan Temple

iwali signifies the triumph of good over evil, and the victory of light over darkness. It’s a time for families to come together in celebration, providing an opportunity for gift giving, festive feasts, and to observe an array of vibrant fireworks and lights.

The first day of Diwali is known as Dhanteras. On this day, those who celebrate prepare for the upcoming festivities; cleaning their houses, making small purchases of silver and gold, and installing small oil lamps, known as diyas, into their temples and homes. Naraka Chaturdashi, the second day of the festival, is a time for people to purchase festive foods and sweets, and make their homes vibrant and colourful with decorations such as candles and lanterns. The third day marks the height of Diwali. Known as Lakshmi Puja, this is the day that homes and temples will come alive with lights. Lakshmi Puja is a time for families to come together. The young visit their elders during the day, before the whole family comes together in the evening for a night of festive feasts, fireworks, and prayers. On the fourth day, Govardhan Puja, the bond between husband and wife is celebrated, with husbands showering their wives with gifts as a token of their love. The fifth and final day, Bhai Dooj,

Method For the curry: 1. Put the vegetable oil in a large pan over a medium-high heat. 2. When hot, add the onion, ginger and garlic and cook for 8 minutes until softened. 3. Add the carrots and potatoes, turn up the heat and toss for 3-4 minutes. 4. Add the lamb and brown it off. 5. Add the garam masala, bay leaves, cumin powder, ground turmeric and chilli powder and fry for 2 minutes. 6. Add the chopped tomatoes, water, salt, sugar, and chilli. The big interview

I N T RO D U C I N G

Rakie Ayola W

hen thinking about the best of Welsh acting talent, Rakie Ayola is sure to spring to mind. Rakie is an actress, appearing in theatre, tv, film and radio and is the co-founder of Shanty Productions. We were lucky enough to catch up with Rakie ahead of her acceptance of the prestigious Siân Phillips Award. One of BAFTA Cymru’s highest honours, this award is presented to a Welsh individual who has made significant contributions to television. Since we met, Rakie was also awarded ‘Best Actress’ at BAFTA Cymru 2023. Rakie, it's an absolute pleasure to meet you! Let's start from the beginning. Your childhood and how you got into acting, can you tell us more? “Hey guys, absolutely! I was watching Barbara Streisand in ‘Hello Dolly’ one Christmas and from then on, I just knew I wanted to be on television. I saw this extraordinary woman with big hats, singing in the street and I thought, I want to be able to sing in the street; for people to not care, and for everyone to join in! I would also watch the BAFTAs where people would win these ‘shiny things’ and I thought, I’d quite like to have some shiny things of my own. I would take part in things such as the Christmas play and Eisteddfod when I was at Windsor Clive Primary School, and then went onto Glan Ely High where the drama teacher told my Mum “an hour of drama a week isn’t enough for her”. From then on, every Saturday morning you’d find me at the Orbit Theatre, Mill Lane. This introduced me to the world of amaetur theatre.

16 | Cardiff Life

the big interview Photography by @Ejatu Shaw, @bmb.agency, BBC One, Getty Images I knew from young that my dream was to pay my bills through acting, but you’re meant to love the art and not expect to earn a living from it. I wanted to do both. I wanted to live a life where coffee tables didn’t get smashed and ashtrays didn’t fly across the room. I recognised the situation at home wasn’t working for me, so I changed it. Just like when school wasn’t working out for me, so I managed to secure myself a spot at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, fully funded. It actually took a few months for my Dad to notice that I wasn’t going to school anymore!” The Pact, Doctor Who, Grace… those are just a few shows to name! Do you have any firm favourites? “The Pact was huge for me because I was leading the show and I was an executive producer on it, so I’m closer to it than any job I’ve ever done. I’m really proud that the family were at the centre of a drama set in Wales. Grace, what a lovely team of people. Everyone I’ve worked with has been so lovely. There’s also a show I’ve been working on called ‘Chaos’ which will be available to stream on Netflix next year. I hope people love watching it as much as we did making it!” Your daughter is following in your footsteps, studying drama. Do you think getting into the arts from a young age is beneficial? “In short, absolutely. We all have to act every day of our lives. For example, if you’re having a bad day, it’s polite to act like you’re not. In a professional capacity, doctors need to learn how to communicate

with patients in a way that doesn’t leave them confused, and lawyers are acting all the time on behalf of their clients. It’s that communication piece and I think it’s a shame that drama still carries that stigma in education of “oh, it’s a waste of time”. What advice would you give aspiring actors who may not have many opportunities available to them? “Find out about any low cost theatre schemes that you can sign up to. Watch stuff. I talk to a lot of young actors and they don’t watch stuff. How do you learn if you don’t observe? Watch people older than you and younger than you. Particularly older than you, because if things go the way you want them to, you’ll be acting throughout your adult life. Also, understand what people from other walks of life are doing so you can widen your points of reference. You will only be this age and look this way for a certain amount of time.” Lastly, what's your proudest achievement to date? “I mean, the Siân Phillips Award, what an honour. It never occurred to me that my name would be in the mix for that. I used to watch ‘I, Claudius’ (when I should have been in bed), so this feels like a real full circle moment for me.” Don’t forget to keep an eye out for Rakie in Netflix’s ‘Chaos’, available to stream in 2024! The Arts With Lydia Bowen-Williams

P

roduced by The Sherman Theatre and Hijinx Company, this piece was performed by a collective cast of neurodivergent and neurotypical actor-musicians. A loud and proud piece of unapologetically inclusive theatre, with an educational and heartwarming tale at the centre. What better way to celebrate the Sherman Theater’s 50th birthday than by telling a story which took place mere metres away from their doors, and also happened to change the world? A remarkable true story that all started with Alan Duncan, a young man born with Down’s syndrome who inspired a revolution. Set in early 1970s Cardiff, university student Jim Mansell was stunned by the conditions of local Ely Hospital. After volunteering with the residents at the hospital, he quickly learnt these people deserved better and were deprived of their freedom.

A Heart-Wrenching Welsh Story of Friendship, Change and Acceptance that Rocked the World! Housemates (2023)

18 | Cardiff Life

the arts Photography by Tim Green The relationship between Jim and resident Alan is a vulnerable display of hope. Despite Alan’s dreams of living in a house and being in a band seeming impossible at the time, Jim fought against all odds to help him. Together, they conduct an experiment to fight for change, end institutionalised care and establish Supported Living. With heavy themes of abuse and neglect, Housemates reminds us how much we have evolved, looking back 50 years ago. The powerful use of outdated language and slurs harnessed the severity of the story and only solidified the reality hidden behind the humour.

The beauty of music and its meaning was incorporated seamlessly. Never was the music distracting but only complimentary to the action. Transitioning the audience into each new phase of the journey, Marc Bolan’s ‘Children of the Revolution’ ballad now has a newly discovered meaning. Each song accompanied the performance with ease and was handpicked to cleverly utilise subliminal undertones with each lyric. The soundtrack was impactful to say the least.

The foyer was dressed with 1970s props and furniture, setting the scene upon arrival, whilst the band encouraged the audience to sing along to classic 70s hits in the theatre. As the audience filed in, the theatre filled with laughter as the actors interacted with the audience, creating a sense of community. Setting a comfortable and upbeat tone which lasted throughout, despite some tear jerking moments, Housemates provided a safe blanket of comedy over the shocking reality beneath. The overall tone and accompanying aspects of the show strongly communicated the themes, whilst the multi-level staging physically and literally separated Alan and his friends from their dreams and aspirations until the finale. The small ensemble cast had undeniable chemistry and each individual brought a realistic and compelling performance. Natasha Cottriall (Sally) and Lindsay Foster (Heather) acted as crutches through the piece; two exceptional female leads who brought comedy and consistency. Peter Mooney and Gareth John, in the roles of Jim and Alan, were both particularly charming throughout, bringing to life two exceptional and historical individuals.

Written by Lydia Bowen-Williams Instagram @filmprobe Website www.filmprobe.co.uk

Thanked by the audience with a standing ovation, a cheering crowd and a few runny noses, this enlightening piece of theatre had an impact unlike any other, with an impactful narrative rounded off with an Elton John-esque musical number at the finale. Having the pleasure to witness this show in Cardiff, where it all once took place, was a truly special experience and one which has the potential to resonate with the audience deeply. Housemates revealed how far we have come as a society and that change is possible and integral when you believe in something. A compelling and moving true story that overcomes prejudice and educates its audience. To check out the Sherman Theatre’s upcoming shows, visit: www.shermantheatre.co.uk

Here are Ease Retreats five top tips on how to switch off this month: 1. SET BOUNDARIES - Establish clear boundaries for work, social commitments, and personal time. Make a priority to protect your downtime. 2. EMBRACE HYGGE - Embrace the Danish concept of Hygge, which involves creating a cosy and comforting atmosphere. Light candles, snuggle up in warm blankets and enjoy a movie with your favourite cuppa! 3. DIGITAL DETOX - Dedicate specific periods each day to disconnect from screens and social media. Use this time to read a book, take a walk or engage in a new hobby. 4. UNPLUG FROM WORK - Resist the urge to check work emails or take work calls during your time off. Create a clear separation between work and personal life. 5. SOCIALISE MINDFULLY - While socialising is important, be selective about your commitments. Prioritise gatherings that bring you joy and don’t overextend yourself. Cardiff Montessori School

A

decade ago, Esma Izzidien, a mother of two, initiated a Montessori parent and toddler group with just eight children in a village hall. Little did she anticipate that ten years down the line, she would have grown it into a secondary school boasting around 100 students, a team of 20 plus staff members, and an impressive Estyn inspection report. This school is now known as Cardiff Montessori School based in Llanishen, Cardiff. Situated in close proximity to Llanishen Leisure Centre, the school occupies a contemporary facility featuring an outdoor area. The interior has been thoughtfully repurposed, with spacious classrooms and ample windows that invite natural light. Within the school, there’s a distinctive atmosphere of tranquillity in the section designated for younger students, while older pupils have their dedicated area with classrooms and study spaces. The Montessori approach, created by Dr. Maria Montessori, a renowned authority in child development and a three-time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize, serves as the foundation of the school’s mission. At Cardiff Montessori School, students adhere to a uniform dress code and progress through key stages, similar to traditional schools. However, the distinctive Montessori philosophy shapes their education. Here, resources, materials, and teaching methods are individually tailored to accommodate the unique development of each child. This institution is dedicated to cultivating learners who excel academically, experience emotional and social well-being, acquire essential life skills and discover spirituality and

education purpose. The focus is on nurturing self-directed and resilient learners who demonstrate a strong social conscience. What also sets Cardiff Montessori School apart from mainstream schools is that homework assignments are absent from the curriculum and formal testing doesn’t commence until students enter the GCSE phase. Instead, the children’s progress is assessed by teachers using a benchmarking approach, with this data not being disclosed to the students. Cardiff Montessori School offers a range of educational opportunities to accommodate children at various developmental stages. Their educational journey commences in the Toddler Community, where students as young as 2 years old are welcomed. As children advance, they transition to the Children’s House, a Montessori classroom environment designed for ages 3 to 6, promoting the benefits of a mixedage setting.

Resources, materials and teaching methods are individually tailored to accommodate the unique development of each child

The Elementary program is divided into lower elementary (ages 6-9) and upper elementary (ages 9-12), introducing the concept of cosmic education. As students mature, they have the opportunity to explore the Cardiff Montessori High school, designed to provide a secondary education tailored for the 21st century, equipping them for the future. The school features a specific uniform and logo for the older students, who also gather one evening a week for social activities, preparation, and communal meals. In the classrooms, you’ll find a mix of age groups, with older pupils taking on a supportive role, guiding and assisting their younger peers. In addition to these core programs, Cardiff Montessori School is dedicated to making Montessori education more accessible through Outreach initiatives. They offer parent education and various resources, including toddler groups. For families homeschooling their secondary-aged children, a Tuition Service is available to provide support and enrich their learning experience. If you’re ready for your child to embark on this educational journey, enrol today by contacting the admissions team at admissions@cms.cardiff.sch.uk or filling out the form on the website: www.cms.cardiff.sch.uk/admissions

Headlands The School on a Mission

education

B

ased in Penarth, Headlands is an independent school that sets out to provide a voice and support for children and young people with emotional, behavioural, and social difficulties. Headlands offers day and residential placements to young people from the ages of 7-19, providing the best possible education in a forward-thinking, stimulating environment. Students can face a number of disadvantages that more often than not, lead to disrupted educational experiences. Providing education and care for young people who often find mainstream experiences a struggle, their approach is based on the quality of relationships with their students, and they work hard to foster their passions and support them while they grow to become confident learners. Action for Children recently held the Boycott Your Bed initiative at the school to help raise funds to provide resources for students who need to make their next step a success. The needs of the students can often be wide and varied, so success looks different for each pupil. For some, it might mean learning to read or understanding healthy relationships; for others, it might mean moving back to mainstream school or gaining certain qualifications so they can access college and university. For many children, these successes will be taken for granted; however, for Headlands students, simply learning to read or being able to try something new can mean exposing themselves to further failure and disappointment. This requires students to have the courage to take risks, which only happens when students have trust in the adults helping them. With two former students currently working within the teaching team and another working at the Action for Children Wales head office, their impact is evident.

The needs of the students can often be wide and varied, so success looks different for each pupil

The team at Headlands works hard to create new initiatives to support the pupils. Recent initiatives include the development of a zero-waste shop to reduce plastic use in the school. This idea was driven by a group of students who wanted to do something about the climate crisis. Together with staff, they developed the zero-waste shop and are working with the onsite kitchens to supply food and other items, without packaging. They are now taking delivery of over 300 glass bottles of milk a week, which prevents 100 plastic litre bottles of waste. The students are currently exploring the next steps to broaden the reach of this initiative and widen its impact by opening it to the public. Another exciting initiative is the Headlands small animal centre, which has been built by the students using reusable materials, and will soon be opening for local schools. The farm currently houses alpacas, goats, ducks, chickens, bees, and rabbits, which the students care for and manage. Headlands has also been working with schools and educators in British Columbia, Canada, to develop ways of including students in decision-making in schools. Matthew, Principal at Headlands, tells us that the results of this collaboration has meant that students have actively engaged, alongside adults, in making changes to processes within schools. If you’re interested in the incredible work that Headlands do, check out their website for information on placements and how to support their initiatives; www.headlandsschool.org.uk Photography by Headlands School

Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen Photography by Steve Pope Photography

Y

sgol Gynradd Groes-wen is the first of several planned schools at Plasdŵr, a new community under development in north west Cardiff. Plasdŵr is part of Cardiff’s Local Development Plan and is on track to deliver five new schools in the next 10-15 years.

Redrow have worked closely with the Education Team at Cardiff Council to deliver a brand-new state-of-the-art primary school. Detailed consent was granted in May 2022, construction started in July 2022 and the school opened its official doors at the start of September this year. Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen is a huge credit to all those involved and marks the start of thousands of local children having access to highquality education a short walk or cycle from their homes. “Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen is a significant milestone for Plasdŵr”, says Grant Strong, Senior Special Project Manager at Redrow Homes. “It is the first piece of social infrastructure to be delivered within the community and will become a vital education facility for people living in Plasdŵr and the surrounding areas.” What makes Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen stand out is its unique offering to provide a dual language stream module (50% Welsh

language and 50% English language). The school is the first of its kind in Wales and “we are delighted to be at the forefront of a new pioneering curriculum”, Grant told us. Their vision is that the primary school will help to bring the community together and help to provide a sense of belonging and identity to families who are looking to call Plasdŵr their home. Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen sits within Plasdŵr’s Groeswen neighbourhood and will become part of the vibrant central hub that draws visitors from across Plasdŵr and its neighbouring communities. The primary school’s flat roof will ensure the building is easily recognisable as a hub within the community and its featured glazed green brick is in keeping with the character and colours of the Groeswen neighbourhood. Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen also has plenty of green space and outdoor facilities, in line with Plasdŵr’s ethos to be a great place ‘to live, work, learn and play’. In addition to its unique appearance, Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen has achieved the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ design standards and is one of the latest high-specification schools being built in Cardiff. To date, Plasdŵr has delivered over 600 new homes, but it will eventually deliver up to 7,000 homes as it takes shape in north west Cardiff. As well as houses, plans for Plasdŵr include a commercial centre (Canol Plasdŵr/Plasdŵr Centre) where there will be space for a new healthcare centre and supermarket, as well as units for shops, offices and restaurants. Richard Carbis, Headteacher at Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen Primary School, said “Welsh identity will be at the heart of everything we do as will the focus on nature and the environment, allowing us to become fully integrated into the Plasdŵr vision of a garden city. Our branding reflects our commitment to work as one with the locality and as we say, ‘Gyda’n Gilydd yn Gryfach / Stronger Together’.” For more information on the wider development of Plasdŵr, head to: www.plasdwr.co.uk

cardiff salons

Salon Spotlight: Josh Lee Hair Josh Lee Hair is a modern, inviting hair salon in Pentrebane, Cardiff. Specialising in balayage, along with big, bouncy blow drys, the enthusiastic team have been helping customers achieve their hair goals for the last five years.

O

wned by Joshua Partridge, the team is led by a hairdresser with over 20 years experience. Beginning his career at the age of 13 in Sweeneys Hair Design, you’re in some of the most experienced hands in Cardiff when visiting this salon. With a number of awards and accolades to their name, the team were most recently shortlisted for the Eleven Australia UK Salon of The Year, 2023. Discovering a salon where you feel at ease can be a challenging task, but Josh Lee Hair excels. As you step inside, you’re met with warm smiles and an inviting, chic interior that instantly puts you at ease. Peachy pink tiles line the backwash wall, with plush, black leather seating providing the perfect spot to relax.

When it comes to their most popular service, it’s always a balayage. Blending out buttery blonde locks and weaving in rich, nutty tones are something that the team do wonderfully well. Balayage is a technique that involves a freehand, painting approach, where the end result is a flawlessly blended and authentically natural look. Using a gentle blend, balayage layers multiple colours throughout the hair, giving it more dimension and vibrancy — perfect for brightening up dull hair and keeping hair looking fresh for up to six months between appointments. Customers of Josh Lee Hair have left the salon an impressive 4.9 star rating on Google, with many praising the results of their highlights and balayage.

"Absolutely love this place, they worked wonders on my hair. I would recommend this salon especially if you are thinking of places to go for a haircut/ balayage. They have expertise on what colours to use, different hair types and styles which suit, but making sure it’s what you want overall"” “Lived-in blondes and mid-length bobs” will be popular this festive period, says Josh, whilst the vibe for Christmas parties is all about the Hollywood waves. These are achieved by using a slightly bigger curling iron before being styled into place with a dressing brush. Josh explains that it’s “all about the prep as opposed to hairspray and finishing.” To keep your party hair lasting longer, Josh recommends that you use a body product to provide a good foundation for styling. “Eleven Australia I Want Body Volume Foam is great” says Josh. Looking to the future, the team at Josh Lee Hair is excited to be bringing blow dry and bubble events to Cardiff — so keep your eyes peeled! If you’re looking to transform your locks in time for Christmas, head over to their Instagram page, @joshleehair, to seek out some inspiration and book your appointment. Photography by Josh Lee Hair

Winter Garden101

By Poppy Nichol

G

lobal Gardens is a community growing project in Gabalfa, Cardiff. Their aims are to support community-based learning about food growing, seasonal cooking and sustainable arts and crafts. They hold twice weekly volunteer sessions, a forest school and a range of workshops and courses.

As the nights draw in and the signs of winter fast approach us, now is a good time to take stock, plant seeds for the spring and make plans for an abundant growing year ahead. In this article, Poppy Nicol from Global Gardens offers some top tips for winter gardening.

such as phacelia, winter rye, vetch and clover. These plants prevent nutrient run-off, improve soil structure and leguminous green manures can even fix nitrogen. Dig in green manures in the spring before planting out spring crops.

Composting Turn and cover any compost heaps before the cold properly sets in. This time of year is also a perfect time to collect leaves and create a leaf pile.

Wildlife-Friendly Gardening

As the rate of plant growth slows down and the business of the summer eases, gardening can also take a slower pace. Use these winter months ahead to take steps to create a healthier, more productive, wildlife-friendly garden.

Think about the structure and framework of your garden and how you can better support wildlife. Create log piles, leave seed-heads and wilder patches for overwintering birds, invertebrates and mammals. Consider how you can extend available food for wildlife throughout the year - including via planting trees and shrubs, as well as herbaceous perennials. You could even set yourself a winter project to create a bug hotel, hedgehog home or toad abode!

Mulching

Nature Connection

Mulching perennials and hardy winter annuals helps hold moisture in the soil, prevents nutrient run-off and supports plant health. Gather fallen leaves, straw, well-rotted woodchip and put a layer a few centimetres thick around perennials and annuals. Be creative with the resources around you. At Global Gardens, we have experimented with coffee, tea grinds and sheep wool.

The winter can be a great time to get to know the wildlife in your garden. Wrap up warm with a cuppa and try to spend a few minutes outside, whether in your garden or local green space to connect with nature and calm the mind. We also recommend signing up for the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch in January!

Winter Garden Care

Green manures Autumn is a good time to sow green manures

Take Climate Action Think about how you can do your bit to take climate action in the garden. Save rainwater in the wetter months of the year and reduce reliance on mains water in the drier months. Install a water butt if you haven’t already got one, to collect rainwater off any exterior structures. Photography by Poppy Nichol

Crop Planning for 2024 Winter is a great time to plan for the growing year ahead. Think about what crops you would like to grow in 2024 and consider creating a crop rotation to enhance crop fertility and reduce pest and disease build-up. Brassicas, for example, can be susceptible to club root disease whilst alliums (including garlic, leek and onion) can be susceptible to, so it is recommended to have a gap of 3-4 years before growing them in the same spot. If you are thinking about taking on a new patch of land for food growing, potatoes can be a great first crop to clear uncultivated ground and reduce the weed burden. However, they are hungry feeders so add some well-rotted compost or manure before planting. Beans or alliums are good to follow potatoes. Brassicas, on the other hand, like fertile ground so we recommend adding compost or manure before planting out any kales, cabbages or cauliflowers. Carrots, beetroots and salad greens are less hungry so are great to follow brassicas. By this point, the weed burden should also have been reduced. Check out “no-dig” guru Charles Dowding some excellent resources on crop planning! For smaller urban spaces, try quick growing salad greens like rocket, mizen, mibuna, green in the snow and greek cress. If you haven’t got your own growing space, you could find out if there’s a community growing project in your local neighbourhood. Edible Cardiff has a map of all the community gardens in Cardiff - including Chapter Gardens in Canton, Riverside Community Garden in Pontcanna, StarGarAllot in Tremorfa and Global Gardens in Gabalfa.

Feeling Festive Finally, as we enter the festive period, you could try creating a festive wreath using foliage from your garden or local green space. Consider how you can increase evergreens in your garden so you can have some foliage all-year round. Bay, rosemary, myrtle and sage provide excellent vibrant foliage as well as being great culinary herbs. You could also spread the gardening love and give seeds for Christmas gifts! For high quality, locally produced seeds, we recommend checking out the Real Seed and Wales Seed Hub. Follow us on instagram and Facebook @globalgardensproject or sign up to our monthly e-newsletter www.globalgardensproject.co.uk

What to Grow During the Winter Months: 6 Top Crops 1. Garlic Garlic was traditionally planted on the shortest day of the year (Winter Solstice - 21st December) and harvested on the longest (Summer Solstice - 21st June). You can actually plant garlic cloves from mid-November onwards. Plant cloves around 10cm apart, with 15-20 cm between rows. We like to mulch ours with straw to keep them cosy through the winter months. 2. Broad beans Sowing broad beans in late October through to mid November can give plants a head start for an early spring cropping. Broad beans are generally frost tolerant and a winter planting can also reduce plant vulnerability to black aphids. An effective planting method is to dig a trench around 5-10 cm deep and plant the broad beans 10 cm apart in a zigzag fashion, with 30 cm between each trench, covering the seeds with soil. At Global Gardens, we like to plant broad beans with Phacelia - a beautiful bee-friendly plant which suppresses weeds and acts as a ‘living mulch’, balancing soil moisture levels. One of my favourite broad bean varieties is ‘Aquadulce’. 3. Onions Plan to plant your onions in October to November for an early crop in May to June. Plant bulbs 15 cm apart with 30 cm between rows. 4. Garden Peas Peas can be sown in November for an early spring crop. Sow in a trench about 5 cm deep with about 5 cm between each seed and cover with soil. ‘Kelvedon Wonder’ is a particularly tasty and prolific variety. 5. Sweet peas Sweet peas can also be sown in November under cover for an early sweet fragranced bloom. Sow in modules or pots in a greenhouse, poly tunnel or on a windowsill and wait until the risk of frost has passed before planting out. 6. Winter greens Kale and chard are our staple greens through the winter at Global Gardens. Both are relatively frost tolerant, super productive and can provide delicious greens throughout the winter months. It’s best to sow kale and chard for winter in April or May and plant out in June or July, so you may have missed the opportunity this year but keep it in mind for next year!

resh, quality and sustainable, with a twist of ‘Posh” – This Cardiff fish and chip eatery has just been named as one of the Top 40 Best Fish and Chip Takeaways in the UK, with an eye on the prize for the next stages of the competition to get to number one. After its conception ten years ago in its flagship store in Llandaff, The Posh Fish and Chip Company, owned by Hamid Kowsor, has been known for exceeding the standard chippie experience. The eatery boasts high-quality MSC-certified ‘posh’ alternatives to traditional cod, such as battered prawns and calamari. All chips are made daily on-site from potatoes sourced from less than 50 miles away, and are ‘proper chips’ – nothing frozen. The crisp batter was developed by Hamid with his suppliers and is currently used in other chippies around the city. All sauces are homemade with signature secret recipes; gravy, tartare, mushy peas and curry sauce. The oil used to fry is a high oleic sunflower oil meaning it’s entirely

Eating out plant-based, 100% sustainable and the healthiest oil to fry in. All packaging is sustainable to limit environmental effects and has been, long before government restrictions came in on polystyrene usage. The staff at Posh are also all UK coeliac trained and food is cooked in a separate frying range to minimise the risk of contamination. These values have led to a long list of awards, including being named in the Top 50 Best Fish and Chip Shops in Fry Magazine, Wales Online Best Fish and Chip Shop, and The Food Wales Awards to name a few. Now for the biggie, the National Fish and Chip Awards Fish and Chip Shop of the Year. Various rounds will now follow before the big announcement next year to decide on the winner. Two years ago, Posh decided to branch out and open another store on Glebe Street, Penarth. The shop is on a busy high street in the town and many customers enjoy eating in after an evening walk, especially on ‘Fish Friday’ which is still very

much a tradition in both shops. This year has brought the biggest adventure yet, as they launched ‘Posh on Wheels’. Hamid and his partner Laura Davenport invested in a huge food truck to take The Posh Fish and Chip Company to events, festivals and weddings. Post-Covid, they recognised that many customers have adopted different eating habits and now enjoy going to food festivals for a day out with the family. With this in mind, they invested in a new arm of the business and painstakingly renovated it, with the help of as many local small businesses as possible. The truck has the same traditional fryers from renowned Cardiff company Preston and Thomas to ensure customers get the same great quality that they would have in the shops. Visit The Posh Fish and Chip Company at their stores in Llandaff (Llantrisant Retail Park, Llantrisant Road, CF5 2BF) Penarth (Glebe Street, CF64 1ED) or contact for any bookings for ‘Posh On Wheels’ via Instagram @poshfishandchip or Facebook ‘The Posh Fish and Chip Company’

A

s the festive season is fast approaching, this time of year is all about giving. Whether you volunteer, support a charity, donate to organisations and people in need, or carry out random acts of kindness, giving back to the community is extremely rewarding and something that everyone should try their best to do when they can. This month, we’re highlighting some local individuals and organisations who are doing great work to uplift, inspire and support Cardiff’s community. From children’s charities to inspirational athletes, it is a pleasure to shine a spotlight on the amazing work that these individuals and organisations are doing.

I

n 2019, the world turned upside down for Nick Barton, a Cardiff-based Team GB Triathlete, after he suffered from a stroke and brain bleed. After this, Nick’s life as he knew it was put on pause; he lost strength in his left-hand side and had to learn how to walk again. The daunting task of recovery was made possible due to Nick’s unfaltering determination and courage, as well as help and support from Headway. Headway is a South Wales based charity which supports over 500 people who have been affected by an acquired brain injury. They started as a small group for people with acquired brain injuries, along with their families and their therapists, to come together and gain support after discharge. However, they quickly grew into the incredible charity that they are today, offering many services such as social groups, life skills sessions, counselling, and rehabilitation programmes. Thanks to Headway’s rehabilitation and reintegration programme, Nick was able to make a full recovery. He learnt how to walk again, gained strength in the left-hand side of his body, and was supported through the mental effects of the journey too. Nick’s recovery started slowly, with him taking small walks from his bed to the nearby chair. However he is now fully recovered and, at the end of September, Nick represented Great Britain as

he competed in the World Triathlon finals in Northern Spain. Without the support and help from Headway, this idea would have never turned into a reality, which is why Nick used this opportunity to raise money for Headway. In support of Nick’s amazing fundraising efforts for Headway, construction company Barratt Developments kick-started the donations with a generous £1,000. The Welsh division of the company, Barratt Homes South Wales, also made an additional donation of £1,500 directly to Headway themselves, in an effort to further support the charity’s life-changing work. Barratt Developments is a leading housebuilder who ensures that customers and consumers are at the forefront of all that they do. Alongside building and developing homes of the highest quality, Barratt Developments are also committed to creating a positive legacy through their Community Fund. The Barratt Community Fund allows each division of the company to donate money to a local charity making a difference in the area. Make a smile

M

ake A Smile is a world-wide charity dedicated to making sure that all children receive the childhood that they deserve, in spite of any hardships that they may be facing. The volunteers at Make A Smile provide a professional service whilst making children’s dreams come true. They dress up as characters, play games and interact with children who are suffering from illnesses or facing adversity. Make A Smile has over 100 volunteers, 29 branches both in the UK and overseas, and put a smile on 10,221 children’s faces last year alone. The charity is now a tremendous success, positively impacting the lives of children all over the world. However, Make A Smile’s journey all began in Cardiff seven years ago. In 2016, Luke Morgan – a medical student from Cardiff University – decided to set up Make A Smile after learning about the importance of childhood fun in the physical, behavioural and cognitive developments of children. In 2017, Luke recruited some of his friends and began to spread the word throughout Cardiff, communicating with other local charities and spreading interest through the volunteering department in Cardiff University’s Student’s Union. Just like that, Make A Smile was officially born, with Cardiff cemented as the founding branch. After two successful years making a difference to the children of Cardiff, Make A Smile expanded, with Luke establishing various different branches in numerous English universities. Today, Make A Smile is not just limited to universities, with global branches making thousands of children smile in Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Australia, Germany, France, Canada, and beyond. Craig Maxwell and Velindre Cancer Centre

I

n September last year, Chief commercial officer for The Six Nations, Craig Maxwell, was diagnosed with a form of terminal lung cancer called EGFR+. Since receiving this life changing news, Craig has set out on a mission to create a legacy, help the next fighter, and make a real difference to cancer treatments in Wales. As part of his pledge to raise such vital funds, Craig cycled from Cardiff to Paris in July 2023. On the 400 mile journey, many of Craig’s friends, family and Six Nations colleagues came together to show support for his incredible charitable work, with many choosing to take to the saddle themselves and ride alongside Craig. When the ride was complete, Craig had raised over £400,000 for the Velindre Cancer Centre and QuicDNA and this figure is continuing to rise every day. Largely recognised as The Hospital of Hope, the Velindre Cancer Centre in Whitchurch, Cardiff, is a leading provider of anti-cancer treatments in Wales. Through fundraising efforts, such as Craig’s, the centre is able to offer better quality of care through complex treatment pathways, purchase equipment, fund support services and research innovative treatments. QuicDNA is a project focused on the integration of liquid biopsy into the lung cancer diagnosis pathway. This proposal

could have a huge impact on the way that lung cancer is diagnosed in Wales. Today, lung cancer is the third most common cancer in Wales, and the QuicDNA project will drastically reduce diagnosis times whilst also improving access to better treatments through the introduction of liquid biopsy techniques. The work of both Velindre Cancer Centre and QuicDNA is vital to how lung cancer is diagnosed, dealt with and treated in Wales. The funds raised by Craig’s incredible efforts will be invaluable for these organisations and the work that they are doing for people all over Wales. However, it doesn’t stop there. Craig’s fundraising efforts have inspired many people to embark on their own fundraising journeys for these organisations. Despite Craig’s 400 mile bike ride taking place in July, money is still being raised for these remarkable charities today. FINANCE TECH AMPLYFI Investment

I

n this day and age, Artificial Intelligence is transforming many industries and reshaping operations on a scale that we have never seen before. The latest investment into this sector comes from the Cardiff Capital Region backed fund, Innovation Investment Capital Limited Partnership (IIC), as they announce their first investment into AMPLYFI. AMPLYFI is a Cardiff-based generative artificial intelligence business, striving to change the rules of business intelligence. Their Insight Automation Programme can read and analyse millions of documents a day, powering thousands of decisions in spite of the most disruptive market conditions. AMPLYFI have established themselves as a market leader over the past eight years, helping global clients to identify and react to market changes, generate new insights, and exposing previously hidden links. IIC’s investment into AMPLYFI will help add value to the business and accelerate their growth. It will enable AMPLYFI to leverage generative AI to further streamline research and analysis, as giving them the ability to expand their team in Wales to ensure that they can continue to deliver market leading products and innovative services to a global customer base. IIC launched at the end 2022, with an initial £50 million from the Cardiff Capital Region fund. The fund was established to support businesses looking to scale up in the region, with a mandate to invest in long term capital in sustainable growth opportunities around Cardiff. Since their launch, IIC has received over 140 applications for funding from companies around South East Wales. Companies in the Medical Technology and Financial Technology sectors have made up the bulk of the applications, however IIC has also received applications from consumer, energy and environment, and construction companies - to name a few. With all of these innovative Welsh businesses to choose from, IIC’s decision to invest in AMPLYFI was based on several factors. For example, the fund recognised that AMPLYFI has a strong management team committed to building an advanced market intelligence technology platform. The fund was also impressed by AMPLYFI’s rapidly growing market segment, and their ambitious growth plans for product developments and technology solutions. Cardiff Capital Region is aiming to re-energise South East Wales through this fund, and their first investment into AMPLYFI perfectly aligns with this vision. With the investment from IIC, AMPLYFI will be able to put their technology into the hands of new consumers, encourage new jobs, and continue to catalyse regional and global growth. The IIC anticipate that they will be making further investments very soon, with a view to expanding beyond just the technology sector to continue to make Cardiff the best it can be.

Whilst a relatively new company, they have already achieved tremendous success in their field, working with studios to build and develop games. They are responsible for all of the behind the scenes work that goes into connecting publishers to players, and players to each other. They have worked on a plethora of well-known and loved games, such as Fortnite, Among Us, Candy Crush, and Call of Duty, to name a few. With this impressive portfolio, Rocket Science Corporation have cemented their status as experts in online gaming.

Rocket Science Corporation

Co-founder of Rocket Science Corporation, Tom Daniel, grew up in Bridgend. Despite his success in the States, Tom has stayed true to his Welsh roots as his company prepares to open in Cardiff. In support of the move, Rocket Science Corporation has received an investment from the Welsh Government’s Economy Futures Fund. The Economy Futures Fund is a streamlined and flexible finance package offered to businesses. This investment supports the government’s mission to develop the ever growing games industry in Wales, whilst also ensuring economic growth and providing new employment opportunities for individuals with a passion for this sector. When the new Welsh headquarters are complete, Rocket Science will create 50 new jobs for the people of Cardiff. This will give industry professionals in and around the city an opportunity to work on some of the biggest video games in the world, elevating Cardiff’s position in the global gaming sector as a result.
