The significance of Pride Month in June has grown immensely across the UK, especially in Cardiff, dating back to the first Mardi Gras in September 1999. This month serves as a pivotal moment for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies to come together, celebrate diversity and advocate for equality. Throughout June, a plethora of events and discussions unfold, highlighting the importance of acceptance and inclusivity.

In this exclusive, carefully curated edition, delve into our ultimate Pride Guide ahead of the big event on 22 and 23 June, explore a selection of incredible queer-owned businesses through our Editor’s Choice and discover local organisations exemplifying genuine allyship. In our Cardiff Lives segment (pages 18-22), you’ll also meet the empowering individuals who truly embody the spirit of our city.

Within these pages, you will also encounter profiles of Welsh advocates for queer health, whose tireless efforts contribute to the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ individuals. From supporting trans youth to enhancing healthcare services, their work is instrumental in promoting holistic wellness.

In June, not only do we celebrate Pride but we commemorate the Global Day of Parents. On pages 64 and 65, we’ll applaud progress and spotlight organisations dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ parents in fulfilling their parenthood aspirations.

Brimming with a diverse spectrum of features spanning sports, charity, hospitality and every aspect in between, this edition celebrates diversity and equality while embracing the spirit of Pride.

Happy reading, Ellie Richards @cardifflife.wales www.cardifflife.wales

Every Woman's Aid

How Welsh Women's Aid is Advocating for Trans Inclusion and Intersectionality

Welsh Women’s Aid is an intersectional feminist organisation dedicated to eradicating violence against women and girls, including but not limited to acts of domestic abuse and sexual violence. The organisation envisions a world where everyone lives free from violence, abuse and oppression, and actively collaborates with various sister and specialist organisations which have aligned values.

The organisation represents the stance of its diverse members throughout Wales and consistently reaffirms its position on service provision, acknowledging the positive discussions around proposed reforms (Gender Recognition Act, Ban on Conversion Therapy). And while these issues are yet to be resolved, the organisation claims beyond any doubt: ‘We are inclusionary and when we discuss ending violence against women, we inherently include trans women.’

As part of its remit, Welsh Women’s Aid provides specialist services across Wales with policy guidance, training and support to ensure that both trans and non-binary survivors of abuse receive the necessary assistance tailored to their specific needs. The organisation ensures that any individual requiring gender-specific support services or any form of community advocacy receives appropriate help to ensure their safety and successful recovery.

Through its inclusive approach, Welsh Women’s Aid undertakes a thorough assessment of every survivor’s needs to connect them with the necessary specialist

support, irrespective of their gender, sexuality, or race. This commitment extends to combating a series of intersectional inequalities survivors face. ‘We recognise that sexism and misogyny intersect with racism, transphobia, homophobia, and ableism to further complicate systems of oppression. Violence and abuse can never be truly eliminated where any still thrive,’ the organisation proclaims.

Welsh Women’s Aid also emphasises that violence against women and non-binary people is both a cause and consequence of inequality – a reflection of the patriarchal system which is still the biggest obstacle to a fully inclusive community.

Through its policies and practices, Welsh Women’s Aid not only champions the rights of women and girls but also actively supports the transgender community, ensuring an inclusive approach towards creating a safer and more equitable society.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in top LGBTQ + employer list

In great news for healthcare employees, the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has ranked 37th in the annual Workplace Equality Index released by Stonewall earlier this year. The shortlist – featuring the top 100 employers in the country for LGBTQ+ equality – placed the Cardiff and Vale UHB third among the health organisations included, bestowing it with a Gold Award.

The Stonewall Workplace Equality Index is compiled using a combination of employment policies, practices, and anonymous staff surveys to assess the levels of diversity and inclusion in each organisation. The Health Board owes its stellar position on the list in large part to the reintroduction of the LGBTQ+ Staff Network, which aims to provide greater visibility for issues faced by the queer community at work alongside offering a safe and supportive environment.

Exes and Os launches at Motel Nights

At the end of May, queer women and non-binary folks of Cardiff were treated to the launch of Exes & O’s – Cardiff’s new safe space designed with this demographic in mind. It was created by Sophie Lord, with the intention of helping sapphics find their community. It came to Sophie’s attention that despite Cardiff having a thriving queer community, a small proportion of it is geared towards queer women and non-binary people. That’s where Exes & O’s comes in!

Following the success of their first gathering at speakeasy Motel Nights, where guests could socialise and share a few tipples with the backdrop of a live DJ, Exes & O’s are hosting not one, but two events during Pride month. The next Motel Nights bash is set to take place on 28 June, marking the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, while earlier in the month – around mid-June – there will also be a free meet-up for the sapphic community in Bute Park. The events are also, of course, trans-inclusive, so anyone who identifies with this group is welcome.

Let Them See Cake

Born during the pandemic – at the peak of everyone’s obsession with baking – the cake shop was an immediate success for partners Gareth Davies and Ryan Rowe, winning locals over not just with its extremely instagrammable setting, but also with its decadent delights.

Welsh local Gareth is the mastermind behind the cakes, putting his college training as a chef, along with years of experience baking cakes with his gran for events in his local village, to good use. His masterpieces are both a pleasure to behold, and a feast for the tastebuds. Ryan, meanwhile, was adopted by Cardiff when he came here to university, and is currently working his magic ensuring the shop offers exceptional customer service.

The Voice of a Community

Russell T Davies' Impact on Television and Queer Culture

Russell T Davies is one of Wales’ greatest assets when it comes to television. Davies has reinvented the wheel when it comes to TV drama, and in particular stories which shine a light on queer culture and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Showcasing the raw reality of being different in society, Davies strives to bring unconventional stories to the big screen and educate viewers on the reality of being queer.

Davies is a screenwriter and producer best known for being the showrunner and head writer of the BBC Sci-Fi phenomenon Doctor Who from 2005 to 2010. Davies made an extraordinary comeback to the series in 2023, bringing it into the 21st century with a rebrand of The Doctor. Staring Ncuti Gatwa, Davies’s latest contribution to the franchise brings us a reimagining of the character that harnesses queer energy, giving Gatwa the opportunity to represent a generation through his portrayal.

Russell T Davies has always found a way to project his personal voice through Doctor Who. Displaying his opinions on current affairs and society, Davies has never been afraid to share his innermost thoughts with his viewers. The fifteenth Doctor appears to be one of the most relatable, youthful and chaotic interpretations of the timeless character – a testament that Davies has injected life and modernism into the show once again. He has always been confident to play with unconventional stereotypes and challenge the idealism of ‘The Doctor’, and it is about time we see such a version come to life.

Although the majority of audiences know Davies for his exceptional work Doctor Who, let’s take a look back at his other work, which has helped solidify his name as a writer, creator and the voice of a generation.

the arts 14 | Cardiff Life

Instagram @filmprobe www.filmprobe.co.uk

2021 2015

l In 2015, Davies wrote two queer television dramas; Banana, an anthology series that focuses on the lives of eight LGBTQ+ couples living in Manchester, and Cucumber, which explores the many facets of contemporary sex culture. Davies used Cucumber’s deep dives into the passions and pitfalls of 21st-century gay life to continue his conversation on gay relationships, communication, and anger in particular. Davies has continued to showcase the reality of relationships in his writing, leaving no stone unturned and presenting life on screen.

l Most recently, Davies wrote and created the heartwrenching drama It’s a Sin (2021), which explores the story of three young men – Ritchie, Colin and Roscoe – who leave their homes to begin a new life in London. However, before they realise it, they find themselves struck by a virus.

Davies drew on his own experiences and the experiences of his friends; he wanted to commemorate those who suffered and died from the illness. It’s a Sin is a show which simultaneously educates and moves its audience, and Davies was able to write lovable characters whilst incorporating the serious and heartbreaking themes of grief, loss and prejudice.

Russell T Davies is a Welsh artist and creative who strives to share his experiences and bring them to audiences over the globe. His work has compelled audiences to understand the reality of queer life, while keeping his messages accessible and relatable to all. Davies will forever be regarded as a Welsh treasure for bringing memorable and impactful LGBTQ+ characters to life.

1999

Queer as Folk (1999-2000) was a short-lived series following the daily lives of three gay friends living in Manchester. Although it was cancelled at the time, this series represents the beginning of Davies’ portrayal of queer characters in the media. From day one, he was experimenting with his unique voice and style as a creative, incorporating light-hearted moments with the often harsh reality of being queer.

Cardiff's Queer History

Cardiff has a thriving LGBTQ+ community, as well as an array of LGBTQ+ people of influence who are either from here or have made their homes and careers here. From sport to TV to advocacy, Cardiff has long been a place members of the queer community can call home.

➜The city has a history of diversity, stemming in part from its roots as a port, where many from around the world came and created communities. And while it was, for a time, a much more hidden part of that, this included the LGBTQ+ community. Sailors dressed as the opposite gender, and women lived as men. Susan Brunin, from Newport, passed as a male sailor for years, and Ann Stewart was arrested in 1859 for posing as a man. In 1833, the Cardiff Times interviewed American star Lulu, Queen of the Air, a male circus acrobat who worked as a woman. Vesta Tilley, a male impersonator, performed at the Grand Music Hall in 1887.

➜Things were often a struggle for the queer community, with legal punishment for being caught with another man common across the 19th and early 20th centuries. A key ally in pushing back against this was Cardiffian Leo Abse, a lawyer and MP for Pontypool, who championed equality for the LGBTQ+ community. In 1957, he was a vital advocate of The Wolfenden Committee, which aimed to recommend the decriminalisation of homosexuality. Abse was praised for opposing a Bill to amend laws relating to homosexuality in 1962 and continued to be an ally to the community throughout his career. ➜

Cardiff also has a rich history of LGBTQ+ arts. Winter Kept Us Warm, a Canadian LGBTQ+ romantic drama film, premiered in Cardiff in 1965. The film’s subtext was clear, even though it was carefully coded. What’s more, The Iris Prize was established in 2007 to showcase queer films, and has since become world-renowned for launching the careers of LGBTQ+ filmmakers as well as contributing to Cardiff’s thriving creative and queer communities.

In the mid-2000s, Cardiff became a hub of queer TV representation with Torchwood, a Doctor Who spin-off aimed at older audiences. The show followed a group of alien hunters, all with only a passing acquaintance with heterosexuality, led by John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness. Recently, Torchwood’s showrunner Russell T Davies and Who returned to Cardiff to film with queer actor Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor in 2023. A rebooted and possibly more queer Who is promised, set against the backdrop of Cardiff, flying both the Welsh flag and the rainbow flag worldwide.

History

Cardiff has a rich history of inspiring queer artists, such as the iconic writer Peter Gill. His plays, including Kick For Touch (1983) and Cardiff East (1997), are influenced by his experiences growing up as a gay man in the city.

But it’s not just the arts where the town has made strides in LGBTQ+ representation.

Influential sportspeople like Colin Jackson (athletics) and Jess Fishlock (football) hail from Cardiff and have set an example for athletes to be out and proud.

Cardiff’s sports clubs are also making significant contributions to the queer community, with events like the Rainbow Wall gaining prominence during the 2022 Football World Cup, as well as the Cardiff Devils hosting annual Pride Nights and partnering with Pride Cymru to make the sport more inclusive. Cardiff is also set to host the Eurogames – the biggest annual LGBTQ+ sport event – in 2027.

LGBTQ+ venues are on the rise in the Welsh capital

➜Gay pubs have a long history in Cardiff, too.

During the 1970s, a thriving subculture of bars in the city catered to the LGBTQ+ community. Two of the most popular were SIRS on St Mary Street and the King’s Cross. SIRS was a particularly discreet bar that required a key and access through a secret entrance. On the other hand, the King’s Cross was one of the first LGBTQ+ venues in the city and served as a flagship for many more that followed.

➜Cardiff’s first Pride march occurred in 1985, organised by the Cardiff University Gay Society. In 1999, it became a ticketed event named Cardiff Mardi Gras and moved to Bute Park. Volunteer-led charity Pride Cymru took over in 2023 and moved the event to the castle. Meanwhile, The Big Queer Picnic – an inclusive outdoor alternative to the main Pride event – has been taking place since 2014.

Victoria Cardiff

Scone

cardiff lives 18 | Cardiff Life

Prepare to be dazzled, Cardiff! The nation’s beloved drag queen, Victoria Scone, is set to ignite the stage at Pride Cymru 2024 with her signature flair and sass. This news is a thrill for all fans, but it hardly captures the electric excitement radiating from Vicky herself. When we caught up with the sensational star, she was positively beaming: ‘I can’t wait to be back in Victoria’s hometown of Cardiff for Pride Cymru. It’s always so exciting to see the diverse lineup of acts Pride Cymru has booked each year. I can’t wait to get back on the main stage and get the party started!’

Victoria Scone has etched her name on the pages of drag history as the first cisgender female to join the ranks of the Drag Race franchise – not just in the UK, but globally. With now nearly six years of mesmerising performances under her belt, her voluptuous, traditional drag aesthetic sets her apart in the drag universe.

Victoria’s journey to drag royalty began in the world of pantomime, where she often stole the show as the dame. Destiny, it seems, always had drag queen stardom in mind for her, even when she couldn’t imagine it herself. Historically, drag has been a realm where men transform into fabulous women, but trailblazers like Victoria are expanding the stage for female, trans, and non-binary artists. Her groundbreaking stint on

Drag Race UK was a watershed moment, earning her immense public admiration and paving the way for a broader spectrum of drag performers.

Her milestone on the show is still making waves today. ‘I’m incredibly honoured to see the impact my appearance on Drag Race has had,’ Vicky shared. ‘I would say that my casting has noticeably created more conversations around all gender identities in drag, as well as [paving the way for] seeing a more varied plethora of drag styles being booked on the scene.’

Inspired by the greats of British drag like Ceri Dupree, Danny La Rue, and Miss Jason, Victoria’s act is a sumptuous feast for all, delighting audiences across the board with her inclusive and captivating performances.

Cardiff holds a special place in Victoria’s heart, not just as the launchpad for her illustrious career but also for the warm hospitality and kindness of its people. As she prepares to return to the Welsh capital for Pride Cymru, the city is ready to welcome her back with open arms, promising a weekend of unforgettable celebrations. Prepare for a spectacular show, as Victoria Scone is set to once again enchant her hometown crowd.

Leighton Rees Wall & The Welsh Ballroom Community

Professional choreographer and dancer Leighton Rees Wall has transformed life for the queer society in the Welsh valleys by introducing an LGBTQ+ subculture whose roots can be traced back to Harlem, New York, and its vibrant community of black and Latino drag queens.

Originating during lockdown, the ballroom community follows in the steps of its black and Latinx American predecessors, creating a safe space where queer performers from any race and sexuality can express themselves. The community also hosts pageants, or ‘balls’, where they compete across different categories.

When Leighton first set off to discover more about the culture and heritage of ballroom, explore voguing as an art form, and create a safe space for the community, he wasn’t sure whether there would be an appetite for it. The response, unsurprisingly, was overwhelming, and just a year after the society was first formed, they were hosting a fully sold-out ball at the iconic Cardiff landmark, the Wales Millennium Centre.

In addition to developing the community from scratch, Leighton is credited by its members with creating a place where they felt like they could safely come out.

Gavin Sheppard

Gavin Sheppard, a seasoned performer hailing from Cardiff, is known for his versatility. From humble beginnings in local competitions and amateur productions to becoming a household name in Cardiff, what really sets Gavin apart is his ability to seamlessly transition between genres, captivating audiences with his soulful renditions of classics, mesmerising performances in musical theatre, and electrifying energy in pop and reggae numbers. But beyond his undeniable talent lies a genuine love for the stage. With each performance, Gavin’s infectious passion creates an atmosphere of joy and celebration, leaving audiences spellbound.

In addition to his multifaceted career, Gavin recently embarked on a new chapter of his life – one filled with love, joy, and unforgettable moments. Gavin’s marriage to his beloved husband Luke captured the hearts of millions when they exchanged vows live on national television, officiated by none other than the iconic Lorraine Kelly on the Lorraine show.

Their union was a testament to love’s enduring power and the triumph of authenticity and acceptance. Surrounded by friends, family, and viewers from the UK and around the world, Gavin and Luke’s wedding was a celebration of unity and equality, marking a significant milestone in their journey together – as well as the 10th anniversary of same-sex marriage in the UK.

The couple’s journey continues to unfold with the renovation of their forever home, a charming cottage nestled in the heart of Cardiff. Their renovation journey will be documented for all to see on the program Worst House on the Street, offering viewers a glimpse into the transformation of their once-dilapidated property into a stunning sanctuary. From the initial planning stages to the final touches, Gavin and Luke poured their hearts and souls into every aspect of the renovation, turning their vision into reality. Viewers can tune in this summer to witness the makeover of the couple’s cottage on Channel 4, with sibling presenters Scarlet and Stuart Douglas.

Five facts about Pride Cymru

1 Back in 2003, Amnesty International seized the spotlight during the event, shedding light on countries that outlaw same-sex relationships worldwide.

2 In 2006, Cardiff Mardi Gras revved up excitement with the debut of TopGayer, the first-ever gay motor show. They even rolled out a secret shopper survey, revealing insights on how over 150 UK car dealers treated LGBTQ+ customers.

3

Fast forward to 2012, and Cardiff Mardi Gras hit the streets with its inaugural parade through the heart of Cardiff city centre. Talk about taking the carnival vibe to the next level!

4

The festival’s growth has been nothing short of remarkable. From a £50,000 affair in 2002, it’s ballooned to nearly £200,000 in organising costs. In 2013, a stroke of community genius saw the event relocate to the Millennium Stadium, slashing venue expenses, but the hustle to secure funds remains a year-round effort.

5 In 2015, Pride Cymru clinched a Silver Award from Attitude is Everything, becoming the first Pride event in the UK to earn such acclaim for improving accessibility for deaf and disabled attendees. And guess what? They’ve now ascended to Gold Award status, cementing their status as only the second Pride in the UK to reach that pinnacle of inclusivity.

The team behind the rainbow

Behind the vibrant spirit of the festival, Pride Cymru is a charity fueled by passionate volunteers dedicated to erasing discrimination in all its forms – whether based on sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, disability, or any other factor.

The organisation’s mission is simple yet powerful: to champion equality and embrace the rich tapestry of diversity within local communities. The volunteer team honours and uplifts the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals, striving to foster connections.

Beyond the iconic annual Pride event, which brings the community together in celebration, the charity works year-round to foster unity and support among all facets of the LGBTQ+ spectrum. Pride Cymru’s roots trace back to a time when hate crimes surged, prompting collaboration between South Wales Police and the LGBTQ+ community, culminating in the inaugural Cardiff Mardi Gras in 1999 – the precursor to Pride Cymru’s Big Weekend.

What began as a grassroots effort has blossomed into Pride Cymru – a beacon of hope and solidarity for Wales’ LGBTQ+ population. The Big Weekend has evolved into a beloved, family-friendly affair, providing a platform for diverse voices to be heard and shared. Through partnerships and engagement across the region, the organisation strives for acceptance and mutual respect. For more information and

WHO RUN THE WORLD? QUEER FOLKS

Global Running Day is sneaking up on us quickly on 5 June, so we thought, what better opportunity to shine a spotlight on Cardiff’s beloved LGBTQ+ running group, the Cardiff Foxes?

Social Sports

With members based in Cardiff and the surrounding areas, this LGBTQ-focused running group is all about giving everyone a warm, supportive spot to run, whether you’re just starting out or you’re already nailing marathons. It’s especially geared towards LGBTQ+ folks who might not feel comfortable in the usual running circles, but allies are totally welcome too.

Every Sunday morning, the Cardiff Foxes hit the ground running for their staple 5k, and sometimes they throw in some longer midweek runs for anyone craving a bit more of a challenge. But it’s not all about running; they also organise some pretty fun social events like hikes, nights out, and trips to exciting spots nearby.

You can catch them every Sunday at Castle West Lodge in Bute Park and Arboretum, Castle St, Cardiff, CF10 1BJ.

They start gathering at 10:15am and take off at 10:30am sharp. It’s a perfect mix of fitness and socialising with a super supportive community.

Follow the Cardiff Foxes on Instagram @cardifffoxes for each month’s running schedule and other updates

Global Running Day

To celebrate Global Running Day 2024, Strava is organising a Virtual NYRR Global Running Day 5K, encouraging runners to cover 3.1 miles at any location of their choice between 1 June and 9 June. This event allows thousands to join forces globally, emphasising the importance of staying active and healthy.

Cardiff Dragons FC

Meet the Cardiff Dragons FC: a trailblazing force in the heart of Cardiff and a vibrant part of the LGBTQ+ community. Founded in 2008, they’re not just any football club – they’re the first mixed-gender LGBTQ+ team in the city, and their passion for the game is matched only by their commitment to inclusion.

It all started with a spark of initiative from a member of Birmingham Blaze who reached out to the South Wales GFSN, looking to field a team for the 2008 GFSN Annual Get-Together. Discovering there were no existing teams to represent Cardiff, they decided to step up and create one. Thus, Cardiff Dragons FC was born.

Since then, the club has blossomed into a vibrant community with teams for everyone, no matter their skill level: whether you’re looking to play 11-a-side, 7-a-side, 5-a-side, or even join the unique Goalie Union, there’s a place for you here.

What truly makes the Cardiff Dragons stand out is their warm, welcoming ethos – a genuine celebration of diversity and a safe space where everyone, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity, can enjoy the beautiful game. Their story isn’t just about football; it’s about creating a legacy of unity and acceptance.

The Cardiff Lions

Since kicking off in 2004, the Cardiff Lions Rugby Club has proudly pioneered inclusivity within Welsh rugby, creating a welcoming space for people of all sexual orientations to come together and enjoy the game.

At the Cardiff Lions, cherished values like discipline, resilience, commitment, and respect are central. These qualities build strong characters on and off the pitch, ensuring every game is played with integrity and sportsmanship. Affiliated with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), the club loves to keep its calendar filled with friendly matches that showcase its competitive spirit and promote fair play.

But the fun doesn’t stop at rugby! The club buzzes with social activities, from the dazzling antics of Drag Bingo nights to the vibrant celebrations of Pride events. For those who enjoy the great outdoors, there are plenty of hikes and sports days to keep members active and engaged.

A dynamic team of ten enthusiastic committee members, including a chairman, social secretary, and team captain, works tirelessly to foster inclusivity, forge lasting friendships, and deepen the collective love for rugby.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

Warming up (your running shoes and party shoes)

Big Moose

One of my favourite coffee shops is Big Moose Coffee Co. Not only do they serve delicious tea, cake, brunch and a cheeky mulled wine at Christmas time, but they are also a safe space and community hub where everyone is treated with kindness and made to feel welcome. I am also a huge fan of Big Moose due to the impressively positive work they do to make mental health a priority, and their charity goals to support people through therapy and early intervention.

Alongside some special pride cakes that will be available all weekend, Big Moose will be hosting the annual Pride Run held in collaboration with Albany Road Run Club. This will take place on Friday 21 June at 6.30pm, starting at Big Moose and taking a lovely 5K route through the beautiful Bute Park. The event is a chance for people to come together, have fun, and most importantly be themselves – and if like me you aren’t a runner, you

are welcome to walk the journey! Celebrations will follow at Big Moose Coffee Co with a real party atmosphere to kick off Pride Weekend.

Operations and events manager

Louise O’Reilly shares: ‘By taking part we will also be making a positive statement about our belief in LGBTQ+ rights. The running community is hugely supportive of equality and inclusion, and it means a lot to me that every year we get not just LGBTQ+ runners showing up but many allies as well. As any runner will tell you – through running, you get to meet so many different people, people you maybe would never have met otherwise, and it opens your eyes hearing about different people’s lives and experiences. It breaks down barriers in many ways. It’s no wonder it’s a sport that brings people together.’

Silures

One of my favourite places to visit during last year’s Pride was Silures on Wellfield Road for their limited edition painted rainbow Pride cocktail. I absolutely loved the creativity of the striped glasses, which also made your tongue turn into a vibrant patterned flag!

This year Silures have created a whole range of new drinks to celebrate; each carefully crafted cocktail is a dazzling colour, forming a radiant rainbow of flavour and finesse. Over Pride Weekend, Silures will be donating 10% of cocktail sales to a chosen LGBTQ+ charity in celebration.

THE big day

Cardiff Life | 37 columnist

The Queer Emporium

With full bellies and a boozy buzz, check out what’s happening at the gayest shop in town! Pride is an all-month event at The Queer Emporium and includes highlights such as Comedy ‘Work-In-Progress’ nights every Thursday where LGBTQ+ comedians try out their material before the trip to the prestige Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Welsh Language Nights running in Caerphilly, and Ginny Lemon returning on Friday 21 June for a very special edition of Transition.

There will also be a brand new weekend brunch menu, a new wine menu and rotating guest vendors throughout the month featuring their small businesses in store for a limited period. Pride Saturday itself will see the launch of the new Sapphic night ‘BWTCH’ for butches and their fans (including a competition to crown The Butchest Butch). Whatever time of day you visit, there will be something spectacularly gay on the agenda – and be sure to pick up a limited edition Pride 2024 T-shirt while you are there.

Bubble CiTea

Start your day with a pre-parade Bubble Tea. You won’t want to stand in the glow of the procession without a thirstquenching drink in hand (and let’s face it, it’s only 11am, so we should probably keep it soft). Grab a limited edition Pride cup positively bursting with rainbow bubbles from Bubble CiTea and sip in style!

Company CEO and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community Suneet said: ‘At Bubble CiTea we believe in celebrating diversity and creating inclusive spaces. The Pride cups symbolise our commitment to raising awareness and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Let’s sip with pride and stand together for equality.’

I can highly recommend the Mango Fruit Tea as a refreshing base for those brilliant bubbles!

38 | Cardiff Life columnist

Of course, the centre of Cardiff will be party central on Saturday, so why not take a breather by popping down to Cardiff Bay for an early evening stroll along the waterfront?

After what will hopefully be a scorching hot day in the sun (please Mother Nature!), cool down with a chilled dessert at Llanfaes Dairy. This is my number one recommendation for the best ice cream in South Wales, and I’m so glad it’s finally on our doorstep. This year will see the return of Rainbow Ice Cream – a blend of creamy vanilla and childhood cereal craze Lucky Charms. Try it alongside a scoop of Salted Caramel – you won’t be disappointed!

Llanfaes Dairy

Vodka Revolution

Brunch is always a good idea, and bottomless is always better! Vodka Revolution will be delivering an explosion of colour by decorating the venue in vibrant shades of the rainbow, while staff will be face-painted and proud as they serve you a Rainbow Strip Tease or two! (Note: A Rainbow Strip Tease is a cocktail – this could really cause some confusion…)

The standard bottomless brunch is priced at £35, but if you really want to up the game and include some epic Mean Girls-themed cocktails to the mix, the premium option at £45 will definitely leave you – quote – ‘too gay to function!’.

tuck into the pie box

Sophie Scott, the mastermind behind queer-owned, female-run independent pie shop The Pie Box shares her secret recipes for two decadent vegan pies – perfect for a picnic, or tucking in at home.

Maple and mustard vegetable pie

Vegan rough puff pastry

Ingredients:

500g strong white flour

2tsp salt

400g block of vegan butter

150ml cold water

Method:

Sift the flour and salt into a bowl.

Chop the block of butter into small chunks, place inside the bowl and rub it loosely into the flour.

Slowly add the ice-cold water, mixing with a wooden spoon until combined.

Once a rough dough has formed, knead for a few minutes. Cover and place the bowl in the fridge for 1-2 hours until chilled and rested. Make your filling while your dough is chilling. Turn your dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for another couple of minutes – you will still see lumps of butter, which is what we want!

Get your rolling pin and roll the dough into a rectangle approximately 15cm wide and 45cm long. Imagining the rectangle in thirds, fold the top third down to the centre and the bottom third up over it. Turn the dough a quarter turn to the left.

Roll it out to around three times its length (you may have to hit the dough with the rolling pin to flatten it before being able to roll), and then fold it again as you did before – the top third over to the centre and then the bottom third up over it. Cover the dough and place it back into the refrigerator for 1.5 hours.

Once your pastry has finished chilling for the final time, roll it out, fold it and turn it as you did before, then roll it to around 0.5cm thick. You can now cut the dough to line the bottom of your baking dish (only use about a third, saving a third for the lid, and the rest for your dessert).

Once you’ve made your pastry case, place a layer of baking paper over it and fill it with baking beads. Blind bake your pastry case for around 15 minutes at 200°C until golden brown. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before removing the baking beads so the pastry doesn’t slide down the sides.

Maple and mustard filling

Ingredients:

200g butternut squash

100g carrots

150g aubergine

100g parsnips

150g courgettes

3tbsp olive oil

2tbsp wholegrain mustard

1tbsp maple syrup

1tbsp soy sauce

2 cloves crushed garlic

1tbsp salt

1tbsp black pepper

1tbsp fresh thyme, chopped

1tbsp lemon juice

2tbsp butter

6tbsp flour

500ml soy milk

2 vegetable stock cubes

Method:

Peel and chop all your vegetables to around the same size, then place them in a large bowl, make the marinade and pour it over, mixing together. Bake at 180°C for 35-45 minutes, stirring occasionally until the vegetables are roasted. While your veggies are cooking, make the white sauce by melting the butter on medium heat, stirring in the flour and mixing continuously, then slowly adding the milk to make a smooth mixture. Make the stock by adding boiling water to the stock cubes and combining it with the sauce. Bring to a simmer and remove from the heat.

Mix your marinated roasted vegetables into the white sauce.

Add your vegetable mixture to the blind-baked pie case, top with your pastry lid and crimp the sides to seal. Make sure you cut some air holes in the top to allow the steam to escape. Bake your pie for 25-35 minutes at 200°C, until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is bubbling hot.

Enjoy hot or keep in the fridge for up to four days.

Peach and custard crowns

Ingredients:

⅓ block of rough puff pastry

1 batch of homemade custard

1 tin of peaches

Icing sugar to decorate

Method:

Use the remaining ⅓ of the pastry to make the peach and custard crowns. Roll the pastry out into rough square sheets – these can be any size you like, depending on how big you want them (I make them around 15cm x 15cm). Keep these chilled in the fridge.

Vegan custard (store-bought would be fine too)

Ingredients:

2 cups soy milk

70g white sugar

1tsp vanilla bean paste

½ tsp vanilla essence

50g cornflour

¼ tsp turmeric

100g block of butter

Treat yourself to more of Sophie’s pies from thepiebox.co.uk

Method:

Chop the butter into small cubes and keep in the fridge to stay cool.

Add 1 cup of soy milk, the white sugar and both types of vanilla to a pot. Place on medium heat, whisking occasionally.

In a separate jug, mix the other cup of soy milk with the cornflour and turmeric, then stir until it forms a smooth paste.

Once the milk has simmered, stir in the cornflour mixture and whisk quickly until it thickens.

Continue cooking for a couple of minutes, then take off the heat and mix in the cold butter.

Allow to cool before assembling the pastries.

To assemble, lay out the pastry sheets, spoon some custard in the centre, fold over the corners and top with a peach.

Bake in the oven for 15 minutes at 200°C until golden, then dust with icing sugar once cooled.

The Queer Emporium

Cardiff's LGBTQ + Hub

It's just such a happy and calming space where I don't have to worry about not fitting in or being accepted'

The Queer Emporium in numbers

50%

Young People: At least 1 in 10 of The Queer Emporium customers are under 18, with a further 40% aged between 18 and 25.

97% of those surveyed said that The Queer Emporium has had a significant impact on the local LGBTQ+ community.

30% of The Queer Emporium’s base are non-binary or gender non-conforming.

The Queer Emporium is celebrating its third birthday at the very start of June, and that’s not at all a coincidence – the store originally launched as a pop-up shop for Pride month in 2021, and has since grown into one of South Wales’ most recognisable queer brands. Best of all, the collective uses all profits to support an evergrowing list of community projects run by local LGBTQ+ folks.

Combining the features of an events space, community space, and a shop, The Queer Emporium is owned, managed, and almost exclusively operated by non-binary people. Selfdescribed as ‘home for minority genders’, the LGBTQ+ hub is based in the heart of Cardiff, and over the last three years has become the go-to affirming space for everyone in the community.

In between showcasing queer-run businesses and organising events, the venue also has visitors covered with decadent drinks and cakes made by LGBTQ+ folks, including the now-iconic colourchanging BisexualiTea, or the glittering rose and hibiscus lemonade drink memorably named The Camp Disco Diva.

The program of events at The Queer Emporium ranges from bottomless brunch, speed dating, and comedy nights to the Draglings shows which showcase new queer performers, and the hugely popular Transition events, which provide trans, non-binary and fluid individuals with a safe space to explore gender.

• 270 literature events attendees

• Served approximately 30, 000 people

• Introduced new community-focused events, including make-up nights, an Iftar, Welsh Language LGBTQ+ nights, Craft Club, LGBTQ+ History Tours of Cardiff and lots more

• Supported over 50 new small LGBTQ+ businesses via markets and the Vendor Spotlight programme

• Renovated the store, introducing indoor seating to the venue (a much-asked-for addition) and repainting the shop to a gorgeous pastel pink

Yan White: Illuminating Cardiff's LGBTQ + Scene

Meet Yan White, the visionary behind The Queer Emporium. For Yan, it transcends mere commerce – it’s a passion project dedicated to fostering a thriving community and instigating genuine, uplifting transformations for Cardiff’s LGBTQ+ individuals. Every visit to The Queer Emporium isn’t just a transaction; it’s a contribution to a larger movement.

Beyond the bustling walls of The Queer Emporium, Yan loves spending time among their verdant companions or getting their blood pumping with some exercise (formerly a proud member of the Cardiff Lions, until an injury sidelined them). Their love for plants isn’t just a pastime – it’s a sanctuary, a tranquil retreat where Yan can recharge.

CLOTHING LIBERATION

THE TIN WARDROBE 'S GENDER DIVERSITY MISSION

Discovering one’s identity is a journey, often marked by milestones of self-expression and self-discovery. However, for individuals under the trans, intersex or non-binary umbrella this journey can come with unique challenges, including financial instability. The TIN Wardrobe, an online repository of clothing, emerges as a beacon of support and empowerment in this landscape of exploration.

In the realm of marginalised genders and sexes, financial hurdles often loom large. The simple act of assembling a new wardrobe to align with one’s evolving identity can become a daunting task. Whether embarking on social transitioning

or merely seeking attire for an important interview or event, the financial strain can be overwhelming. Recognising this struggle, The TIN Wardrobe steps in, offering a solution that transcends monetary barriers.

At the heart of The TIN Wardrobe’s mission is a commitment to accessibility. Through generous donations from the local community, this digital catalogue provides a lifeline to those navigating the intricate pathways of gender identity. By granting free access to clothing, the organisation empowers individuals to authentically embody their true selves without the constraints of financial hardship.

For trans people, individuals with gender histories, and those exploring non-binary identities, The TIN Wardrobe serves as a sanctuary of inclusivity. It recognises the importance of representation and validation, offering a diverse array of clothing options to cater to every style and preference. From everyday essentials to statement pieces, each item in the catalogue is curated with care and consideration.

Beyond its role as a clothing repository, The TIN Wardrobe fosters a sense of community and solidarity. Volunteers play a pivotal role in this endeavour, dedicating their time and efforts to support individuals on their journey of self-expression.

In a world where acceptance and understanding are paramount, The TIN Wardrobe stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in fostering a more inclusive society.

Cardiff Queer-ative Cardiff

Run by jewellery maker Sean Kerr, the Gem Palace was born as a small stall in Corporation Market on Cowbridge Road, Canton. The market offered a friendly and safe space for Sean, who describes himself as ‘a gay man making pretty things’, to flourish in his craft.

‘I am completely self-taught, specialising in complex wire woven pieces and extravagant seed beaded designs,’ he explained. ‘If it sparkles, it makes me very happy!’

Being best friends with Cardiffian drag queens – and getting pestered by them to make drag jewellery – inspired the craftsman to ‘launch [himself] into the sparkly goodness that is drag’ about six months ago. And, despite having been part of the queer society for over 35 years, creating drag jewellery has brought Sean closer to the community he loves.

Having lost his confidence and joie de vivre during a rough period in his life, the jeweller found himself rediscovering pride in himself and his work by being part of the magic behind creating a glamorous drag outfit. ‘To see these wonderful performers in all their glory, and to see them wearing my jewellery is such a huge thrill,’ Sean said. ‘Above all, my love and my joy for being a part of this incredibly diverse and supportive community has made me feel alive again.’

‘This project is amongst some of my favourite projects – the clients were a pleasure to work with and they really wanted to create a calm escape for their master en-suite where they can retreat to and relax after a long day with a young family. The focus was on the bath area – I created a freestanding tub between two stud walls to make it feel more enclosed. I paired this with a porcelain bookmatched feature tile, which was a pastel take on turquoise/aqua to introduce colour in a calm way.’

YOUR HOME SHOULD BE AN EXTENSION OF YOU

The Tap End designers share their tips on how to make your bathroom more personal to truly enhance your home and, in turn, your life

From colourful cloakrooms to sleek bespoke master en-suites, briefs and budgets differ from client to client. Everyone’s taste is different, and their bathrooms should reflect this – here is what Justine, Zoe and Daniella have to say about some of their recently completed projects:

‘This home is a very elegant period property in Cardiff and the clients love art, so I based the scheme on a piece of art that they said they wanted to use in this new bathroom. The tile behind the vanity area is a décor tile, but it is faded in pattern and muted in colour to better suit their personal style of understated glamour. You can introduce pattern and colour in subtle ways – on the opposite side of this room we did a traditional double-ended bath in a painted finish, but the main elements, including the floor and the painted walls, were all neutral for longevity.’

‘If a client comes to me with a request for bright and bold, I will always start by asking what the rest of the home is like. Bright and bold is always a winner in my eyes, but only if the client loves this look and can live with it for years to come This project was super fun, and as well as the bold tile we opted for polished copper brassware and a copper tinted mirror in the shower alcove to further add interest.’

The LGBTQ + champions making waves in the NHS

From supporting trans youth with their emotional wellbeing to championing inclusive healthcare practices and improving sexual health services for the LGBTQ+ community, the Welsh healthcare sector is full of queer heroes. Here we showcase a few:

Lisa Cordery-Bruce

Lisa Cordery-Bruce, an expert in emotional wellbeing nursing, is renowned for her dedication to the LGBTQ+ community, particularly for her influential work with the youth. Across Wales, she has been pivotal in helping young individuals establish their own peer support groups, and her contributions have significantly shaped the Welsh Government’s guidelines on supporting transgender youth. Moreover, Lisa has crafted and conducted LGBTQ+ equality training programs for new employees within the Health Board.

In recent years, Lisa has increased her visibility as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in an effort to provide reassurance to others that they are not alone. She was proudly named on the Pinc List, which celebrates influential LGBTQ+ figures in Wales, for the second consecutive year in 2023, alongside esteemed colleagues and friends outside of the University Health Board (UHB).

According to Lisa, healthcare equality is often assumed, but in reality many experience discrimination and exclusion. Real progress comes from engaging with vulnerable groups like children and the LGBTQ+ community, emphasising the power of visibility and representation in healthcare settings.

Lisa is part of several positive initiatives at the University Health Board aimed at advancing equality and inclusion. Under the leadership of Rhiannon Owen, the UHB’s LGBTQ+ network has been rejuvenated, welcoming new members and volunteers to their committee. The network also offers comprehensive training on LGBTQ+ awareness, including specific sessions on transgender and non-binary issues in healthcare, available to all staff.

In a significant stride toward inclusivity, the UHB now offers the option to include pronouns on staff ID badges, a move Lisa and the LGBTQ+ network are immensely proud of, since for many in the transgender and non-binary communities seeing a badge that respects their pronouns is a powerful affirmation of support and allyship.

Sophie Quinney

As the clinical director of the Welsh Gender Service, Dr Sophie Quinney stands as a beacon of advocacy and change. Embracing her identity as an openly lesbian professional, she courageously tackles gender-critical views while promoting a culture of inclusivity within healthcare. What’s more, Dr Quinney’s commitment extends beyond rhetoric as she spearheads educational initiatives aimed at enlightening all NHS staff about inclusive healthcare practices.

Having initially trained and practised as a GP, Sophie’s career trajectory took a pivotal turn in 2018 when she developed a profound interest in transgender health. This passion led her to the Welsh Gender Service in 2020, where she has since assumed the role of clinical lead. From this position, she fosters strong connections with GP surgeries throughout Wales, ensuring they are well-equipped to address the unique needs of LGBTQ+ patients.

Dr Quinney is celebrated as one of the foremost authorities in her field, her voice carrying weight and influence across medical and social spheres. Under her leadership, the Welsh Gender Service strives to dismantle the stigma surrounding transgender healthcare. This is crucial because many trans individuals find the simple act of seeking medical advice daunting, often encountering a lack of support and understanding at general health facilities.

Sophie’s visionary approach not only enhances the healthcare landscape but also ensures it evolves to be as welcoming and supportive as possible.

Kate Nambiar

Since joining the NHS in 1999, Dr Kate Nambiar has profoundly impacted the quality of care provided to the transgender community. Esteemed as a proud, queer, transgender, mixed-race woman, she’s recognised as both an influential role model and a deeply compassionate individual.

Kate serves in a dual capacity: at the Welsh Gender Service as a gender clinician and endocrinology specialist, and as the medical director of the Terrence Higgins Trust. Her leadership at the Trust focuses on advancing sexual health services and striving to halt HIV transmission. She is currently at the helm of the Welsh HIV Action Plan, targeting the elimination of HIV transmission in Wales by 2030.

Her medical journey began in earnest when she specialised in sexual health in 2003, following roles including speciality doctor in sexual health and HIV, and doctoral researcher at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. In 2012 Dr Nambiar co-founded Clinic-T in Brighton, an inclusive clinic focused on sexual health and contraception for the trans and nonbinary communities.

Her transition to the Terrence Higgins Trust represented a pivot from direct patient care to shaping organisational strategy and public health education, which she finds exceptionally rewarding. This role has reignited her passion for HIV and sexual health advocacy, allowing her to apply her extensive expertise to impactful community initiatives.

In recent interviews, Kate has emphasised the crucial ongoing efforts in HIV prevention, noting that while initial progress was significant, the real challenge lies ahead. She underscores the need for continued innovation to meet the World Health Organization’s goal of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030.

Same-sex Adoption's Growing Success

64 | Cardiff Life community
Photography by Julia Amaral, antoniosantosc

The start of June marks not only the beginning of Pride, but also the Global Day of Parents, giving us the perfect occasion to look at same-sex adoption statistics, celebrate positive developments, and highlight organisations doing great work to help LGBTQ+ parents realise their dream of raising a child.

According to Welsh Government statistics, the number of same-sex couple adoptions in Wales has gone up from a mere one in ten to a quarter between 2012 and 2024, with the last twelve months seeing a significant increase (23%) in LGBTQ+ households becoming foster parents.

St David's Adoption Service

St David’s Adoption Service recently released an LGBTQ+ adoption guide designed to be a go-to resource for members of the LGBTQ+ community embarking on the adoption journey. This guide brings together earnest advice from both same-sex adoption advocates and experts, and it’s all about creating a welcoming and supportive space for prospective adopters.

Covering everything from potential challenges to societal views, the guide delves into topics such as mental health, medical concerns, family environment, legalities, employment, and housing. It’s packed with practical tips, encouraging stories, and valuable resources to empower LGBTQ+ individuals to approach adoption with optimism and self-assurance.

A standout feature of the guide is its collection of real-life stories from LGBTQ+ adoptive parents. These personal accounts provide a window into the realities of adoption, highlighting both the hurdles and the triumphs. The stories aim to inspire and guide anyone in the LGBTQ+ community considering the rewarding journey of adoption.

Foster Wales

Earlier this year, Foster Wales played a pivotal role in celebrating New Family Social’s LGBTQ+ Adoption and Fostering Week, shining a light on the joys and opportunities of same-sex adoption. At Foster Wales, the mission is clear: to transform the lives of children by providing exceptional support and training (as well as a generous financial allowance) to those looking to become foster parents. The organisation offers an array of creating options, ensuring that every potential foster parent can find a path that feels right for them. With a welcoming office space in Cardiff, Foster Wales is deeply committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every child experiences happiness and every participant feels valued throughout their fostering journey.

The National Adoption Service

Another Cardiff-based organisation championing LGBTQ+ Adoption and Fostering Week was The National Adoption Service. Founded in 2014, this innovative agency employs a three-tier system, forging partnerships with voluntary adoption agencies across Wales, and collaborating with health and education services, among others. It’s a supportive gateway for couples and individuals eager to embark on the adoption journey.

The National Adoption Service website features heartfelt stories from families who’ve gone through the adoption process, including Rick and Alan, a couple who recently adopted their son. When talking about their goals as new dads, their feelings, and the adoption experience, Rick shared, ‘I never felt like I was being assessed throughout the whole process, it just felt like someone was coming round and getting to know us. They want adoptive parents! The reason they question you is so that you are fully prepared for the scenarios ahead. I think every parent should go through it because it really makes you think about what kind of parent you’re going to be. It’s prompted us to think about things before being in the situation, rather than having to just deal with it there and then.’

The National Adoption Service is deeply committed to supporting LGBTQ+ adoption, providing abundant resources and support to ensure every adoption journey is a successful one.

Together Over Tea

Last month, Together Over Tea welcomed Cardiff-based queer individuals and couples looking to explore either growing their family through adoption or offering children care as foster parents. The LGBTQ+ adoption and fostering drop-in was hosted by the St. David’s Children’s Society at Pettegrew Bakery. Attendees were treated to an informative session over hot drinks (the ultimate comfort factor), during which they had the chance to connect with fellow community members as well as adoption and fostering professionals in an environment that feels welcoming and safe.
