Hey!
I’m Cait, mum of two from Cardiff and the person behind Haul at Number 4 - my little corner of Instagram where I share all things shopping, bargains and every day finds. I started this page because I’ve always loved shopping and after working in the fashion industry for almost a decade, it’s in my blood. From hunting down the latest high street dupes to finding the best bargains. Over time, it’s become a space where I can share those finds with other like-minded women and mums who, like me, want to stay on trend without breaking the bank.
Alongside running Haul at Number 4 , I also work in mental health which is something I’m incredibly passionate about. Supporting others and breaking the stigma around mental health has always been important to me. I try to bring that same honesty and positivity into everything I share online too, because real life isn’t always picture-perfect and that’s okay.
I’m all about keeping it real, whether I’m sharing my latest haul, a great bargain or a small mumlife win. That’s why I’m SO excited to be Cardiff Life’s guest editor for the “Back To School” issue – bringing you helpful tips, affordable finds and a few fun extras to make the return to routine a little smoother (and cheaper!).
So, whether you’re local to Cardiff or just love a bargain, I’m so glad you’re here! Let’s make getting back to school more fun and a bit less stressful, together.
With love, Cait
The Tour of Britain is set to mark the final race of Geraint Thomas’ distinguished career. The 39-year-old Cardiff-born rider has achieved a Tour de France victory alongside two Olympic gold medals, so his farewell to professional cycling will conclude in his home region of South Wales. The 2025 Tour of Britain will start on Tuesday, 2 September, with two opening stages in Suffolk. Organisers have confirmed that the final stage of the Tour on Sunday, 7 September, will pass through the Maindy Flyers Cycling Club, where Thomas began his career.
England take on South Africa in Sophia Gardens on Wednesday 10 September. Phil Salt is the standout Welsh cricketer in the England squad, and his appearance on home soil makes this an especially proud moment for Welsh fans.
Cardiff’s rail map is set for a major glowup. Under the South Wales Mainline Programme, part of the “Network of Alternatives” from the Burns Delivery Board, five new stations are on the horizon: Cardiff East, Newport West, Somerton, Llanwern and Magor & Undy. Backed by £385 million in UK Government funding within an £810 million package, the scheme is due between 2025 and 2030.
Meanwhile, Cardiff Parkway in St Mellons has secured planning approval, with costs estimated at £120–200 million. Despite some environmental concerns, Welsh Ministers gave it the green light, citing stronger connections and mitigation plans.
The South Wales favourite that charmed the Dragons is back with another big move, this time rolling into St Mellons Country Club. Cosy Cinema, famed for its snug private pods and twinkly outdoor screenings, is bringing its unique brand of movie magic to a new corner of the capital. Think blockbuster nights under the stars, sofa-style catch-ups with mates, and more popcorn than you can shake a bucket at. It’s set to be a fresh dose of fun for film lovers and date-night seekers alike. The official opening date is still under wraps… but get your popcorn ready!
Until 16 November, Six by Nico offers a stellar six-course tasting menu inspired by outer space. Expect dishes like “Zero Gravity Oyster”, “Solar Flare” and “Goodbye Earth” for a dining experience that’s truly out of this world.
Get ready for a game-changing moment in Welsh rugby. The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has dropped a bombshell proposal that could see the four professional regions Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys, and Scarlets slashed to just two.
This is all part of a plan for “long-term sustainability,” with each of the new superteams getting a mega £7.8 million boost for their men’s squads. They’d also both run a women’s team, with the WRU hoping to concentrate talent and finally put us on the front foot internationally.
A new National Training Campus is also on the cards, where the two teams would train alongside the national squads. It’s a bold move, and everyone’s holding their breath to see if it’s a stroke of genius or a step too far. The public consultation is running until late September, and a final decision is expected by the end of October.

Balancing family life whilst building a brand is not easy. We chat with a mum from Cardiff who’s doing just that. Meet Molly Lane: co-owner of Bodi Studios , a luxe hair and beauty studio in Cardiff Bay. Sharing the challenges, small wins and how she’s making it all work.
So, it all started when I came home from Australia in 2020, I absolutely loved my time in Australia and my boss/ salon there was such a huge inspiration to me! When I came home I searched high and low for the same kind of salon feeling that I had in Aus and I just couldn’t find it.
This is where I opened my first baby Molly Lane Hair ; we were open for 5 years in a studio in
Barry. This was super successful but we needed more space. This is where Bodi Studios comes in!
Since becoming a mum, owning a business became a lot harder. I made the decision to co-own Bodi with one of my beautiful friends, who is also a mum. This has been the most uplifting, incredible feeling to share the load and bounce ideas off one another. Bodi Studios is just getting started!
Becoming a mum has definitely been life-changing. It’s hard to prepare yourself to become a mum. You realise your life is going to change in so many ways but I don’t think I realised to what extent.
Owning a business and having a newborn baby was challenging.
I constantly felt pulled in two directions - my first baby and my human baby! My beautiful little boy Rudi. He is a complete wild child, always has been and he needs my undivided attention. There’s just no way you can sneak off and get a bit of work done whilst he’s around. My favourite part about being a mum is just watching them grow, his personality and just how much I love him. I didn’t think you could possibly love someone so much - it’s incredible!
I think the biggest challenge is the guilt. It’s definitely getting easier as Rudi gets older but there’s just never enough hours in the day! I’ve got a bit more of a routine with family time and work now but it hasn’t always
been this way. At the beginning, this line felt really blurred and I struggled not being able to be in the salon as much as I used to be. When it comes to the mental load… does anyone manage that well?! I think making lists is one thing that helps me - just writing it all down and sharing the load.
Motherhood has completely changed my approach to business. I realise how important it is to take time to step away from it. I need time with Rudi to fill my cup, this is what has been so amazing about sharing the load with my business partner, we both understand we need our family time!
One boundary I set to protect family time is having set days off. I always try my best to have at-least two days of the week that I don’t do anything business related, granted some times this isn’t always possible each week but if I feel a burnout coming on I make time to take some time
away where I can!
The best advice I’ve got as a ‘mumpreneur’ is that it’s ok to take time away - the business will survive if you’re not there for a couple of days/week. I think before becoming a mum it felt so easy to just be there all the time but now that’s not possible I’ve realised that’s totally ok!
Ok, so come to Bodi Studios and get yourself a lived in colour. Our colours can literally last for up to 6 months! Invest in good products; my go to is REDKEN ABC - I’m obsessed. Also treat yourself to a blow-dry every now and again - you always deserve it!

Starting school is a big milestone for any child, but for families managing allergies, it comes with an extra layer of preparation, communication and care. We chat to Sophie, mum of two from Cardiff, who shares her daughter Amoura’s journey from allergy diagnosis, daily life and how they’re preparing for the school year ahead.
I’m Sophie and I’m a mum of two - Amoura, who is 4, and Rome, who is 1. Our allergy journey began when Amoura was around 4 months old and we were first told she may have
a milk allergy. At 6 months, she experienced an anaphylactic reaction to scrambled egg, which marked the beginning of a series of serious allergic reactions to various foods.
Since then, Amoura has undergone five rounds of skin prick testing and a comprehensive ISAC array blood test, which confirmed she has over 15 allergies. These include allergies to: milk, egg, nuts, sesame, chickpeas, oats, tomato, watermelon, birch pollen, latex, and animal allergens such as cat, dog, and horse.
It’s been a challenging and emotional journey, but one that has taught us a great deal about navigating life with multiple allergies.
As we prepare Amoura for the transition from nursery to fulltime school, we’ve been having lots of open conversations about what to expect and how things might be different. One of our main priorities has been ensuring her safety and confidence around managing her allergies.
She’s especially excited about staying for lunch, so we’ve been talking together about what will go into her lunchbox, making sure it’s filled with safe, delicious foods she enjoys and feels confident eating.
I’ve also been working closely with the school to ensure they
have a clear understanding of her needs. They have a copy of her allergy action plan, and we’ve made sure that staff are trained to use her EpiPen and are fully informed about what foods are safe and what to avoid.
Supporting Amoura at school has been a top priority. I’ve worked closely with staff to ensure they understand the seriousness of her allergies and have her action plan in place. I’ve also spoken with teachers so they know the signs of a reaction and the importance of swift action.
At home, we help her practise saying, “No, sorry, I have allergies,” so she feels confident and empowered. I want her to grow up knowing her voice matters, especially when it comes to health and safety.
We’ve collaborated with the school on inclusive ways for her to join in food-related activities, and I’ve shared information with other parents so they can support her. Creating a safe and inclusive community makes all the difference.
Food allergies are not a preference or a sensitivity but a medical condition that requires constant care. Even the smallest trace can trigger a lifethreatening reaction.
There’s also a big emotional impact. Social occasions like parties or school events can be isolating, but small gestures such as checking ingredients or providing safe options
make children feel valued and included.
I keep regular contact with teachers through conversations, the school app, or calls. Allergies can change quickly, so keeping everyone informed is essential to managing them safely.
Her lunchbox is fairly consistent, often chicken wraps, fruit and vegetables. She helps choose what goes in, which gives her independence while keeping meals safe and enjoyable.
Snacks are a mix of fruit, breadsticks, dairy-free yoghurts, Oreo’s, and our homemade banana muffins. Simple, safe options give us peace of mind.
For classroom parties or events, I send in allergy-friendly treats so Amoura can join in. I’ve worked with the school to make lunchtime feel safe and inclusive, ensuring she can sit with friends and enjoy being part of the group.
I’d love to see consistent allergy-aware policies across schools. Staff training on allergy management and emergency medication is vital, as is clear communication with families. Consistency and education help children feel safe and included in all activities.
You are not alone. Connecting with allergy communities is reassuring and helps build strength. Stay proactive with schools and other parents, and
prepare by sending safe snacks when needed. Most importantly, teach children early to speak up and understand their allergies. Empowerment and preparation make all the difference.
Small steps, big achievements
A recent milestone for Amoura was reaching stage 2 of the milk ladder. Progress like this shows how far she’s come and reminds us to celebrate even the smallest wins.

AN INTERVIEW WITH CHERIE WILSON
Laughter & Learning Since 1988
For over 35 years, Acorns Nurseries has been helping children take their very first steps into learning and play. With 12 nurseries across Cardiff, RCT, Newport, and Bristol, the team at Acorns prides itself on creating a safe, nurturing environment where every child is valued, supported, and inspired. We spoke to Cherie, Managing Director, to hear more about the ethos that sets Acorns apart and how they support families every day.
Q: You opened your first nursery in Oakfield Street in 1988. Can you share a defining moment from those early days?
In October 1988, opening our first nursery brought both excitement and challenge. Supporting children as they took their first steps away from home highlighted what would become central to Acorns’ identity – patience, compassion,
and building trust with families. From that moment, our ethos of love, laughter, and learning wasn’t just words – it became our way of life.
Q: Acorns has grown to 12 nurseries. What core values have guided this growth?
Our principle has always been simple: we want for other people’s children only what we want for our own. By promoting leaders from within, we ensure that our ethos is lived and breathed by everyone on the team. Expansion has never been about numbers but about maintaining the highest standards of care across all nurseries.
“We want for other people’s children only what we want for our own.”
Q: How do you bring the ethos of ‘love, laughter, and learning’ to life every day?
Love - every child feels valued and supported. Laughter - joy is woven into daily routines, from imaginative play to songs and stories. Learning - curiosity is encouraged through rich, stimulating experiences indoors and outdoors.
Q: What makes Acorns’ approach to early years care stand out?
We care for every child as if they were our own. Our managers always started as nursery nurses, so the ethos is not just taught – it’s experienced and shared. Families return generation after generation because we combine the warmth of a family-run nursery with the professionalism of a larger group.
Q: How do you nurture trust with families day-to-day?
By appreciating the enormous decision parents make, and by ensuring every child is happy, engaged, and cared for. Many staff have been with us for decades, and some families even attended Acorns themselves as children.
Pull-quote: “We have cared for children who are now grown up and still remember their time at Acorns.”
“We have cared for children who are now grown up and still remember their time at Acorns.”
Q: How do you support families during transitions, like the start of the school year?
We take time to settle children at their own pace, working closely with parents. Daily updates, flexible hours, and familiar faces help transitions feel natural and reassuring.
Q: How is nutrition and wellbeing integrated at Acorns?
Children enjoy balanced, fresh meals and active outdoor experiences. We build habits of independence, encourage curiosity, and support emotional wellbeing – all as part of our daily routine.
Q: Which community initiatives are you most passionate about?
Our partnership with Ty Hafan children’s hospice is deeply meaningful. Staff, families, and children have raised over £70,000 to support their work, showing that our ethos extends beyond nursery walls.
“Every day at Acorns is filled with love, laughter, and learning.”
Q: What message would you like to share with families this new school year?
Every September is a fresh chapter, filled with new beginnings, friendships, and discoveries. Our promise is to provide a nurturing environment where your children are cared for as if they were our own, and where love, laughter, and learning shine through each day.
Today’s classrooms look and feel very different, with new technology and teaching styles transforming the way children learn. Primary school teacher Hannah Clarke shares her perspective on these changes and what they mean for the next generation of learners.
Hi! I’m Hannah. I began my teaching career in 2021, completing my PGCE during the challenges of the Covid pandemic. After qualifying, I moved to London and spent my first three years teaching at a school in Wimbledon.
My passion for teaching grew naturally, every role I had prior to qualifying involved working with children, and I thrived in the fastpaced, energetic environment. I was drawn to the impact you can have on a child’s life, and how rewarding it is to help shape their future. Teaching offers a unique opportunity to give children their one chance, just like the opportunity I was given during my own school years, and that’s something I’ll never take for granted. WHAT’S CHANGED ABOUT
Although I’ve been teaching for just four years, I have already witnessed significant changes in the profession since my first day as a PGCE student. One way education has changed, especially in Wales is the implementation of the New Curriculum for Wales, which has provided teachers with freedom in what we teach that align with the new 6 areas of learning.
The new curriculum has a big focus on ensuring pupils are well-rounded individuals through holistic approaches, adapting to the digital world we live in and ready to live fulfilling lives.
I’ve seen a huge shift towards prioritising well-being and mental health in schools, especially since the pandemic. There’s now a strong emphasis on helping pupils understand not just how to look after their physical health, but also what mental health means and how they can take care of it, starting as early as Nursery and continuing through to Year 6.
Children today are also incredibly digitally competent. They’re confident using technology like computers and iPads in ways I never was at their age. That’s why it’s more important than ever to not only teach digital skills but also ensure they know how to stay safe online.
In my classroom, I prioritise open conversations about feelings. When situations arise, I take the opportunity to speak with the child, helping them to understand and name their emotions. I reinforce that all feelings are valid, even the big ones like anger, but I also support them in learning how to manage those emotions in a healthy and constructive way.
For example, it’s okay to feel angry, but we talk about positive ways to express and work through that feeling. I often use picture books to explore emotions, which not only helps children develop emotional literacy but also supports their language, creativity, and storytelling skills.
One approach I have embraced more since teaching in Wales is providing real-life, authentic learning opportunities. I aim to show children how what they are learning in the classroom connects directly to the world around them. Authentic learning is a key focus in the Welsh curriculum, and it is a method I have really enjoyed exploring. It brings meaning and purpose to lessons and helps pupils see the value in their learning.
What I love most about teaching is witnessing the achievements of my pupils, whether big or small, each one brings a unique sense of joy and pride. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching an individual grow into their own person, and being part of that journey is truly why we do what we do.
To anyone starting their teaching journey, I’d say this, teaching is a career that will never leave you bored. It constantly challenges you and keeps you on your toes. While some days may be tough, the rewarding moments always outshine the difficult ones. It’s essential to prioritise self-care because every child deserves the very best version of you. Do not be afraid to seek support and lean on those around you. Strive to make each day engaging, fun, and full of opportunities for your students to learn and create.
supporting whole-school events,
Communication with parents has never been easier, whether through email or online platforms, and I believe open, consistent communication is essential for building strong home-school partnerships. In all my teaching experiences, I have maintained regular contact with families and have always had great engagement. Parents have been actively involved, whether it is coming in to read with their child, attending class performances, or supporting whole-school events, which creates a real sense of community and shared purpose.
Workload in schools can be challenging, as teachers often juggle many different responsibilities. That’s why staying organised is essential, but equally important is avoiding burnout. It’s vital to find a healthy balance by making time for socialising and self-care, so that when your to-do list feels overwhelming, you’re mentally prepared and able to tackle it effectively.

Across Wales, schools are leading the way inspiring and shaping a more sustainable future, one classroom at a time. Among them is Oakfield Primary School in Cardiff, a vibrant and forward-thinking school that has embraced environmental education with passion and purpose.
Oakfield was the first school in Wales to take part in Our Classroom Climate - a hands-on climate change programme designed for pupils across the UK. The pupils enthusiastically explored the science behind climate change, diving into experiments on carbon dioxide. One student shared, “I loved the science session… I learnt so much!”
Building on this passion, Oakfield’s Eco Warriors have been making a real difference in their school and community. We caught up with Mrs Thomas, who shared that this year, they proudly earned the Bronze Eco School Award for improving their environment. They worked hard to promote active travel and
They have participated in local events, including litter picks and the planting of trees. They attended the One Planet Cardiff Awards and were delighted to receive 2nd place in recognition of their achievements. Receiving a generous donation from the school PTA, the Eco Warriors used their Pupil Voice to purchase items that they felt would benefit the school environment. These included bird feeders, litter pickers and as all are very keen to observe the wildlife that is encouraged, they bought binoculars too!
From science lessons to playground projects, Oakfield Primary School is leading the way in caring for the planet, proving that even small changes can make a big difference for our future.

It’s time to turn the tables - the kids are in charge! We’ve flipped the script and handed the mic to imaginative primary school students from Cardiff, who get to quiz their teacher on everything from superpowers to favourite snacks.
With curious kids like these, the future of learning looks bright. Who knows… maybe one of them will be the next generation of teachers!
DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A TEACHER WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE?
Yes, I always wanted to be a teacher, ever since I was a very young girl in primary school. I was inspired by lots of fantastic teachers that I had. They made learning fun and that’s what I wanted to do too.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING A TEACHER?
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I would love to have a time machine to be able to go back and meet famous people from the past.
IF YOU COULD TAKE THE CLASS ON A MAGIC SCHOOL TRIP ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
Disneyland Paris because I know we would have lots of fun together, enjoy the rides and eat lots of delicious food and sweets.
My favourite part about being a teacher is making a difference to the children that I teach. It is always lovely to chat to students I have taught and remember good times we have had together and learn about what they have achieved in life.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE IF I WANTED TO BE A TEACHER?
Study hard and try working with children first to see if you have the confidence, patience and enthusiasm to be a teacher.
IF YOUR NAME WAS A FOOD WHAT WOULD IT BE?
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY ANIMAL AS YOUR TEACHER ASSISTANT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I would have an octopus because they have so many jobs to do and an octopus would get lots of jobs done with its eight long arms.
Mrs Strawberry Shortcake! Because I love a fresh, juicy strawberry and I love sweet things too!
CAN YOU TELL ME A FUNNY JOKE OR RIDDLE? How does an onion race start? Onion marks, get set, go!
We’ve shared many budgeting tips throughout this issue, from Supermarket Savvy on page xxx to school uniform Budget Battles on page xxx. Now it’s time to get the whole family involved. Teaching children about finances early on helps build healthy habits for life. Whether you’re starting with little ones or guiding teens towards managing their own money, this family edition explores money habits and budgeting tips that grow with your child.
A classic piggy bank is a great way to introduce saving. Encourage your child to pop in coins they receive as gifts or pocket money. It’s not about the amount but about
Prepaid cards and pocket money apps like GoHenry are popular tools that teach teens how to manage money digitally. These apps allow young people to track their spending, save towards goals and learn about budgeting in a secure way - with parents keeping an eye on progress.
Starting early helps build confident, money-wise kids who are ready to handle the financial ups and downsand whatever life throws their way.
As the school gates reopen and routines reset, it’s easy to focus on uniforms, supplies and schedules, but what about the emotional side of heading back to school?
New terms can bring big feelings and in today’s world, supporting children’s mental health is just as essential as packing their lunchbox. This guide helps parents and families support their child’s mental wellbeing through the back to school transition with simple tips to calm nerves and encourage open, honest conversations.
Don’t wait for a meltdown to open up a dialogue. With the new school term starting, check in regularly with open-ended questions like, “Is there anything you’re feeling unsure about?” Give your child space to share, without rushing to fix or minimise their feelings.
It’s completely normal for children to feel nervous, even if they’ve done this before. Remind them that feeling worried, excited or both at once is okay and that we adults feel it too! Validating their emotions helps build awareness and self-trust.
Busy days can mean rushed mornings and distracted evenings, so try to carve out even 10 minutes of one-on-one time each day. This could be during the school run, a walk or bedtime. Just being present and available builds trust and keeps lines of communication open.
Not every child will voice their worries. The NHS advises us to look out for the following behaviour changes:
» Significant changes in behaviour.
» Ongoing difficulty sleeping.
» Withdrawing from social situations.
» not wanting to do things they usually like. These could be signs they’re
struggling. If you’re concerned, reach out to your school or a mental health professional.
Supporting mental wellbeing isn’t just a one-off chat; it’s an ongoing connection. By having open, honest conversations and showing that it’s okay to ask for help, you’re giving your child tools they’ll carry well beyond the classroom.
Remember, every child is different. What matters most is that they know you’re there, ready to listen, guide and walk beside them through the highs and lows of the school year. Because mental health isn’t just part of the back to school checklist, it’s what helps kids truly thrive both in and out of the classroom.
Having a dedicated study area helps kids build good habits, stay focused and feel motivated to tackle their school work. Creating a space that’s just theirs can make a big diff erence in how they learn and create. We’ve done the digging so you can do the decorating. • 1 lb ground spicy Italian sausage
• ½ medium yellow onion diced
• 1 tablespoon garlic minced
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• ½ teaspoon black pepper
• ¼ teaspoon red pepper fl akes optional
• 1 lb rigatoni pasta
- BORROWED BITES
1. Heat a large pot or dutch oven over medium high heat. Once hot, add the sausage and onions. Cook until the meat is thoroughly browned, using a spatula or ground meat chopper to break it into small pieces as it cooks.
2. Add in the minced garlic, salt, sugar, black pepper, and red pepper fl akes. Allow it to cook for 30 seconds, stirring occasionally.
4. Once boiling, cover the pot and reduce the heat until the pasta is simmering (for my oven that is low heat, but everyone’s burners are a little diff erent). Simmer for 20 minutes, or until the pasta is al dente (tender with just a slight chewiness remaining).
• 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
• 1 (14.5 oz) can petite diced tomatoes blended if desired, see note
• 5 cups chicken broth
• ½ cup half-n-half
• ½ cup fresh basil torn, chopped, or cut with kitchen shears
• Parmesan cheese for topping
3. Add the rigatoni noodles, then pour the crushed tomatoes, petite diced tomatoes, chicken stock and half-n-half in the pot. Give it a good stir, then turn the heat to high and bring it to a boil.
5. Remove the pasta from the heat and add the fresh basil, stirring well. The sauce may be a bit liquidy, but it will thicken some as it cools. Serve warm with shredded parmesan.

And when the sun goes down, the fun doesn’t stop… Don’t miss Twilight Pumpkin Picking - an after dark experience with lights, music and a magical atmosphere perfect for families and big kids alike.
In today’s world, screens are everywhere. While technology can open up incredible opportunities for learning and creativity, too much screen time can take away from the moments kids need to move, explore and connect in real life. By pressing pause on devices and pressing play on outdoor adventures, we can give kids the best of both worlds. Backed by research, this helps families understand why play is so important for wellbeing.
Play isn’t just fun and games - it’s fuel for children’s whole wellbeing. It sparks joy, fires up creativity, strengthens brains and builds resilience against stress and helps kids form lasting bonds with people, places and even nature. Wales is leading the way, being the first country to make play a legal right for children, putting it on the same level of importance as health or education in helping kids grow up happy, healthy and ready for life. When we create safe, welcoming spaces and give kids the freedom to play, we’re not just filling their afternoons - we’re building healthier, happier futures.
Engaging in valued play not only brings joy but also triggers neurotrophins, potentially offering lasting protection against depression. Activities like “rough and tumble” play, risk-taking and pretend play contribute to emotional regulation, stress resilience and a more flexible, creative neural response to unexpected situations. Play is foundational to wellbeing. It nurtures health and emotional resilience as well as helping children foster healthy attachments with caregivers, peers, animals and places, giving them a sense of belonging.
And it’s not just theorycommunities are finding inspiring
ways to bring play to life too. Churchill Way in Cardiff has been reimagined as a vibrant playground of colour and creativity. Commissioned by For Cardiff and designed by Suzanne Carpenter of Patternistas with Bethan Richards, the mural bursts with swirling patterns, blooming flowers and even a giant hopscotch. It’s transformed an ordinary street into an extraordinary play space, brightening our cities and giving children a chance to pause, play and thrive.
Next time you’re in Cardiff, it’s well worth stopping by to see. Why not test your balance and have a go at the hopscotch yourself?!

I’m Holly the owner of Love Penny & Co , a little brand with a big love for all things super cute, colourful and fun!
What started as a few personalised and handmade accessories created at the kitchen table on maternity leave, has grown into not only my full time job but my dream come true - a little business that lets me share creativity and a touch of magic with families everywhere.
As the business has grown over the last 2 years, so has our shop! Our newly opened rainbow shop of dreams is a beautifully converted train carriage in Goodsheds which we share with Bee & Bloom Baby
Our shop holds a cosy and welcoming drop-in craft space where little ones can let their imaginations run wild while making memories that last a lifetime. Whether it’s making bracelets, decorating seashells or making slime, this space offers a hands-on experience that your little crafter will truly love.
We are proud to offer a blend of handmade creations and thoughtfully chosen pieces that bring smiles to little (and grown up) faces. We stock brands we adore and know our little customers will truly treasure such as Rockahula and Floss & Rock
I love nothing more than creating seasonal collections to celebrate the little loves in our life and this Back to School collection holds a special place in my heart, as it’s the year my own daughter Penny begins her nursery adventure!
If you’re a mum, you probably know the feeling of carrying the “invisible” mental load. Remembering everything no one else thinks about - the planning, organising and worrying never really stops.
The good news? You’re not alone. Recognising the mental load and talking about it openly is a huge step toward feeling less overwhelmed and more supported. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a way to protect your well-being and keep your family thriving. By sharing the load and making space for yourself, you’re not only taking care of your own mental health, but also showing those around you that everyone’s needs matter.
In a UK focused study, mothers reportedly manage 79% of daily tasks including family calendars, cleaning and organising.
According to the 2024 Modern Families Index, 74% of working mothers say they shoulder the mental load for parenting.
Mothers managing an uneven share of mental labour report higher levels of depression, stress, burnout and lower relationship satisfaction. Working parents spend an average of 15.2 hours per week on family admin, representing nearly two full work days of unpaid cognitive labour.
These findings make it clear that mental and emotional labour is not just a private struggle - it’s a public health concern.
The burden carried by mothers impacts families, careers, relationships and mental health outcomes across the UK.
A recent Independent article provides more research, expert advice and practical tips exploring
how partners can step up and share this invisible but exhausting work.
Sharing responsibilities with partners or family members and setting small boundaries around what you take on can all help. And don’t forget the importance of taking time for yourself - self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential.
