GUEST EDITOR

Haia, Croeso.

I’m Llio, a travel content creator, professional hot-chocolate drinker, and your Cardiff Life guest editor for November. I’ve got a soft spot for this time of year. The leaves are dramatic, the scarves get bigger by the day (basically portable duvets), and every coffee shop is doing its best impression of a cinnamon candle factory. It’s the calm before the Christmas chaos, when you can still enjoy the sparkle of fairy lights without the panic of “Did I forget Aunty Sue’s present?”.

November, for me, is about leaning into cosiness. Long walks that justify another slice of cake, markets that smell of mulled wine before it’s even December, and finding those little Welsh gems that make the darker nights a lot more exciting.

In this month’s issue, I’ll be sharing the loveliness of November alongside some of my favourite people, from gorgeous winter warming recipes to what to watch on the box as we stay in and wrap up. So, whether you’re here for inspiration, a reason to explore, or just because you like a good bargain hot chocolate, welcome – let’s make November lush.

Hi, I’m Cerys, and I share my renovation and interiors journey over on Instagram at @ty_victorianhouse .

START WITH WARMTH AND TEXTURE

I’ve always believed that a beautiful home doesn’t have to be fi lled with new things. It’s about layering textures, reimagining what you already own, and adding a few meaningful touches.

That philosophy carries through to Christmas, where I love creating a festive atmosphere that feels warm, aspirational, and welcoming, without relying on a mountain of new décor.

For me, the joy of styling at Christmas lies in the mix, second-hand treasures, reused decorations, and simple details that transform everyday pieces into something special.

Here are my favourite ways to create a magical Christmas home that balances sustainability with style.

Christmas should feel inviting above all else. I like to begin by layering fabrics that instantly add warmth, chunky knit throws, soft cushions, or even a folded blanket tucked into a wicker basket. You don’t always need to buy seasonal soft furnishings.

A simple trick I love is adding velvet bows to what you already have in the home. Last year, my garlands and the tree had the bow treatment, as well as my candleholders and artwork. It instantly transforms what you already have into something festive!

A wreath with a handmade bow on the front door, a basket fi lled with pinecones by the fi replace, or even a display of handwritten Christmas cards; these are the fi nishing touches that make a festive home feel full of heart.

displays. It’s such a simple way to weave greenery into everyday spaces, instantly softening them and bringing a festive feel without being overpowering.

One of my favourite touches is hanging baubles from garlands. It’s a brilliant way to reuse ornaments that might not make it onto the tree, and it gives greenery that little extra sparkle. In my kitchen, I like to layer garlands across shelves and add a mix of baubles and natural textures, festive but still in keeping with everyday styling.

This year, I’ve also added a gold bell from Habitat (Argos) into my décor. It’s a simple new piece, but because it’s timeless, I know I’ll bring it out year after year.

Another favourite feature is our garland on the staircase. It was a considered investment, but it instantly transforms the hallway and makes the whole house feel festive the moment you step inside. The beauty of a goodquality faux garland is that it can be brought out each year, and you can refresh it with diff erent ribbons, baubles, or natural sprigs to keep it feeling new.

Mixing in winter-toned pieces, such as burgundy, navy, or forest green, adds that cosy seasonal shift, while still feeling timeless.

BRING GREENERY INDOORS

Nothing feels more classic than greenery at Christmas. Foraged pine, eucalyptus, or holly can be styled into garlands for mantels, wreaths for doors, or added to the centre of a table.

I love to style wreaths and garlands, draped across shelves or propped up as stand-alone

GIVE TREASURES A SECOND LIFE

I’m a big believer in second-hand fi nds. Charity shops, antique fairs, or resale apps like Vinted are brilliant for sourcing unique pieces: vintage candlesticks, baubles, ornaments, or cutglass glassware. Blending these older treasures with newer items creates that layered, curated look which feels both personal and aspirational.

Habitat Vintage

Even everyday items can be reimagined. One of my favourite tricks is turning a simple glassribbed cake stand (M&S) into a festive centrepiece, piling it high with baubles, pinecones, and fairy lights or doing this inside a glass cloche. It’s an elegant way to showcase ornaments that didn’t make it onto the tree, and it gives your table or sideboard a little extra magic.

STYLE SMALL CORNERS

You don’t need to decorate every inch of your home for it to feel festive. I love styling little corners or vignettes that make an impact without overwhelm. A console table in the hallway with a wreath, a cluster of candles, or a tray of baubles instantly sets the tone as guests arrive.

Light fi ttings are another overlooked opportunity. Hanging a paper star or a cluster of baubles from a ceiling pendant brings Christmas décor into unexpected places. In my kitchen, I’ve hung a delicate paper star from our brass chandelier. It’s simple, sustainable, and makes the whole space feel festive without clutter.

DRESS THE TABLE WITH CARE

The Christmas table is often the heart of the season. I’m not a fan of buying Christmas crockery. It feels non-essential when you can create a beautiful table with what you already own. I like to layer my simple Denby set with cloth napkins and add seasonal charm through linens, greenery, and candles, all reusable year

after year. If you want to invest in something extra, charger plates are a great option; they instantly elevate a setting and work for dinners beyond Christmas.

MINDFUL FINISHING TOUCHES

The fi nal layer is what makes a house feel like Christmas: the glow of candlelight, the scent of cinnamon and pine, and festive music in the background. I love to support local businesses, and I adore my Oud & Sandalwood diff user from Bloomhill. It not only looks pretty with a dried bouquet of your choice, but also makes the house smell divine!

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

Marks & Spencer

Lights4Fun

Christmas styling doesn’t have to be about chasing trends or fi lling your home with brandnew decorations. With a little creativity, second-hand fi nds, and thoughtful reuse of what you already own, you can create a festive home that feels timeless, aspirational, and uniquely yours.

I share ideas, new fi nds, and styling over at @ty_victorianhouse : how to make a house feel like home, not by buying more, but by curating with care. This season, try looking at your home with fresh eyes, because often the most magical Christmas touches are already right in front of you.

NOVEMBER, AND NOT IN THE MOOD? you’re

not alone..

When we talk about “stressful seasons”, December usually takes the spotlight. The parties, the shopping lists, the endless juggling act of making Christmas magical. But in my work as a therapist, and in my own life, I’ve noticed something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough: November is often harder than December.

It’s the month where the days feel shorter, the weather heavier, and the “to-do” lists longer. There’s no fairy lights or festive buzz to soften it, just the creeping sense of pressure.

And I’m not alone in noticing it. Research shows that symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) peak in November, with more people reporting low mood, tiredness, and stress compared to December. One recent survey found that around 1 in 3 adults in the UK say their mental health dips most in November, particularly women who are often balancing work, family, caring roles, and their own wellbeing.

So why does November feel so heavy, and what can we do about it?

THE LIGHT DISAPPEARS

Darker mornings and evenings can knock your body’s natural rhythm. Less daylight affects serotonin and melatonin, the chemicals that regulate mood and sleep, so you may feel sluggish, unmotivated, or low.

PRESSURES ARE BUILDING

Christmas shopping, travel plans, school concerts, and work deadlines are all on the horizon, but none of the fun has started yet. You’re carrying the weight of expectation without the payoff.

THE BUGS ARRIVE

Families often find November is the month of coughs, colds, and endless Calpol. Add juggling sick days on top of your usual workload, and it’s easy to feel drained.

SOCIAL PRESSURE CREEPS IN

The constant “what are you doing for Christmas?” conversations can add comparison stress before you’ve even thought about decorations.

Put simply, November is a month of effort without reward. But here’s the good news, you don’t have to simply “push through” it. Small, intentional steps can shift the way you move through this in-between month.

MY SURVIVAL PLAN

As a therapist, I encourage my clients (and myself!) to create gentle rituals that support wellbeing without adding more pressure.

Here are some of my favourite November survival tools:

LIGHT AND MOVEMENT FIRST THING.

Even if it’s just a 10-minute walk outside, getting natural daylight early helps regulate your body clock and boost energy. Pair it with a warm drink in hand, and you’ve already ticked off movement and mood support before the day begins.

2

BOUNDARIES ARE YOUR FRIEND.

It’s ok to say no to “just one more” work task or the endless WhatsApp group plans. A useful phrase: “I’d love to, but I can’t take that on right now.” Clear, kind, and firm.

REST WITHOUT GUILT.

Instead of powering through exhaustion, permit yourself to stop. A 20-minute nap, an early night, or even lying down with a candle lit can reset your nervous system more than another coffee will. 3

NOURISHING COMFORT FOOD.

Focus on warm, grounding meals that both comfort and fuel you. Soups, stews, porridge. Food is care.

BREATHWORK YOU CAN DO ANYWHERE.

Try this grounding technique: inhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Repeat three times. It lowers stress hormones and helps calm racing thoughts.

SPRINKLE IN JOY.

Don’t wait for Christmas to enjoy little rituals. Light a candle at your desk, plan a walk with a friend, or treat yourself to a solo coffee date. Small pleasures create big shifts in mood.

Instead of seeing November as the dreary run-up to December, think of it as a practice month, a chance to prioritise rest, boundaries, and self-care before the festive season. By putting small rituals in place now, you’ll arrive in December with more energy, and maybe even a little excitement. So if November has felt heavy for you in the past, remember, you’re not weak or failing; your body and brain are responding to real pressures. With a few simple survival tools, this overlooked month can feel less like a hurdle and more like an opportunity to pause, care for yourself, and prepare for the season ahead.

3 MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN COOKING A CHRISTMAS FEAST.

Jon’s tips and tricks.

There’s no denying it - cooking Christmas dinner can strike fear into even the most confident home cooks. Between juggling timings, keeping the turkey moist, and trying to make the sprouts taste like something people actually want to eat, it’s a lot of pressure. To help, we asked Abergavennybased private chef Jon, known for his downto-earth approach and flavour-packed food, to share his expert tips for taking the stress out of the biggest meal of the year.

A self-taught chef who began his journey during lockdown by delivering fresh meals to vulnerable people across South Wales, Jon has since built a career cooking for private events, supper clubs and even at Harrods. Here, he shares his advice on the most common mistakes people make around Christmas dinner and, more importantly, how to fix them.

Most of us get excited about Christmas dinner, with some surveys estimating around 100 million photos of festive feasts are posted on social media every year in the UK alone.

But if you’re the one cooking arguably the most important meal of the year, it can be stressful. The truth is, by the time it’s served, many cooks are too frazzled to even enjoy it. So, Jon has shared his go-to tips to keep your cool, cut down kitchen chaos, and make sure Christmas dinner is something you actually want to eat.

1. OVERCOOKING THE TURKEY

“It’s the classic mistake,” says Jon. “People worry about undercooked meat, so they leave it in too long and end up with dry turkey.”

Jon’s advice? Baste and rest.

“Don’t just chuck your bird in and forget about it. Take it out every 15 minutes or so, and spoon over butter and the cooking juices. Before roasting, stuff some butter under the skin and into the cavity with garlic and herbs, as this keeps the meat juicy and full of flavour. Once it’s cooked, let it rest for at least half the cooking time, and continue to baste while resting. I even turn the bird over now and again so the juices distribute evenly.”

JON’S GOLDEN RULE?

2. TIMING & SOGGY VEG

Jon insists timing doesn’t have to be a nightmare, it’s all about prep.

“I always hear people say a roast is the hardest thing to cook, but honestly, it’s easy when you do your prep right. Cook all your veg ahead of time, even the day before! Just half-cook it, then plunge it into iced water to stop the cooking and lock in that colour.”

When it’s time to serve, Jon says to pop your veg in a hot oven for 15 minutes with salt, pepper and butter, wrapped in foil. “They’ll finish cooking and taste fresh, and you’ll be way more relaxed.”

The same goes for roast potatoes: “Parboil them the day before, then chill overnight. They’ll be dry by morning - perfect for crisping up in hot goose fat or oil. It saves time and gives you the crunchiest roasties ever.”

3. ELEVATE YOUR TRIMMINGS

Sometimes, the sides steal the show. Jon’s favourite tweaks? “Finish your sprouts in a hot pan with butter, chopped walnuts and pancetta, it transforms them.”

For pigs in blankets, he suggests brushing the bacon with maple syrup during cooking, and sprinkling with fresh thyme at the end. “They’ll be sticky, sweet and smoky, proper crowd-pleasers.”

And don’t forget the gravy. “A good gravy depends on your meat juices. If you’re cooking something lean, get a small fatty joint as a backup, it’ll make all the difference. Whisk flour into the juices to make a roux, add a splash of port and red wine, then reduce by half before pouring in your stock. Finish with cold butter and a squeeze of lemon. That’s your glossy, rich gravy done.

“Don’t overcomplicate it. Prep early, keep calm, and enjoy the process. It’s meant to be a celebration, not a stress test.”

So, pour yourself a glass of something festive, trust the plan, and remember: the best dinners are the ones cooked with love (and maybe a little butter).

If you try any of Jon’s tips this Christmas, tag him at @gastronomybyjon.

He’d love to see your creations.

6 COUNTRY PUBS THAT SERVE A BANGING SUNDAY ROAST

I’m Nicky and I’m a roast-aholic! With the temperature dropping and the BBQ banished to the shed for winter, it’s time to admit defeat on those summer ham salads and welcome back the Sunday roast with open arms. Nothing says autumn quite like a proper country pub – fire crackling, mulled wine in hand, and a roast dinner that could feed half of Wales.

For me, this goes deeper than comfort food; it’s pure nostalgia. Born in the 80s and raised in a family pub, I’ve got what can only be described as an unhealthy obsession with proper oldschool country pubs. You know the ones: wonky beams, a fire that smokes just enough to feel authentic, and décor that hasn’t changed since 1987 – and shouldn’t. Sadly, too many have been “modernised” into soulless chain pub clones. But in South Wales, there are still gems where time stands still and the Sunday lunch is worth every mile of country lane driving.

So grab your scarf, dust off those walking boots, and let me show you some cracking country pubs that’ll have you planning your entire weekend around their roast beef.

HARE & HOUNDS, ABERTHIN - BEST FOR FOODIES

A 300-year-old Vale of Glamorgan inn, the Hare & Hounds has earned a reputation for thoughtful, seasonal cooking. Expect Welsh beef, pork belly or venison, served with perfectly crisp roast potatoes and vegetables straight from their garden. It’s rustic yet refined – the kind of place chefs eat on their day off.

PENLLYN - BEST FOR VILLAGE CHARM

Just outside Cowbridge, The Fox feels like stepping into a postcard. Think stone walls, open fires and a Sunday roast as hearty as they come. The menu changes regularly, but the longhorn beef is a staple. The portions are generous, the welcome warm, and the atmosphere pure “old school local”.

THE FOX
Nicky Batchelor

At the base of Garth Mountain, this pub is a favourite with walkers (dogs too). The downstairs bar is all beams and open fi res, while the upstairs restaurant serves proper roasts: tender beef, golden Yorkshires, triple meat options and even dogfriendly options for your pooch. Perfect fuel after a muddy ramble.

THE OLD COTTAGE LISVANE – BEST FOR CITY ESCAPES

You don’t have to head deep into the countryside for a traditional roast. On the edge of Cardiff , The Old Cottage off ers a cosy interior and hearty Sunday plates, with a standout sharing roast dinner that locals rave about. Ideal if you want the feel of a country pub, without leaving the city.

FELIN FACH GRIFFIN BRECON – BEST FOR A WEEKEND AWAY

Between the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains, this award-winning inn combines rustic charm with food worth travelling for. Their Sunday menus celebrate Welsh produce, much of it from their own garden. Book a room and make a weekend of it – it’s that kind of place.

RED LION PENDERYN – BEST FOR VIEWS GWAELOD-Y-GARTH

Dating back to the 12th century, the Red Lion is perched high above Penderyn with sweeping views of the Beacons. Inside, you’ll fi nd fl agstone fl oors, roaring fi res, and Sunday roasts that are generous, traditional, and deeply satisfying.

Whether you’re after foodie fi nesse, a dog-friendly walker’s stop, or simply a fi re to sit beside with a pint of local ale, South Wales delivers. Old school pubs might be fewer these days, but these six prove why they’ll never go out of style.

THE CHAIRMAN’S LOUNGE REVS UP: INSIDE

THE EXCLUSIVE LAUNCH OF A CITY PARTNERSHIP

Cardiff City FC recently hosted an exclusive evening in the Chairman’s Lounge to mark the launch of its exciting new partnership with iconic British car manufacturer, Lotus.

The invite-only event welcomed guests from across the city’s business community for a night of celebration, connection, and entertainment.

Attendees were treated to a live Q&A with First Team Manager Brian Barry-Murphy, hosted by BBC presenter Jason Mohammad. The evening featured a curated experience including canapés, prosecco on arrival, complimentary beers and wine, and a pop-up gin bar courtesy of Hensol Castle Gin.

Guests explored memorabilia displays from both Lotus and Cardiff City FC, while a professional magician added a touch of wonder to the evening. A highlight of the night

was the charity raffle, offering prizes such as a weekend driving a Lotus and premium hospitality packages at Cardiff City Stadium.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees, the event raised an impressive £1,200 for the Cardiff City FC Community Foundation. These funds will directly support the Foundation’s mission to improve health and wellbeing, enhance learning and skills, and build stronger communities across South Wales.

The event not only celebrated a new commercial partnership but also showcased the power of sport to bring people together for a greater cause. The partnership also includes the opening of a Lotus showroom within Cardiff City Stadium, the first of its kind at a football venue in the UK, now open to visitors by appointment only.

A LUSH LIST OF THINGS TO DO IN

CARDIFF & SURROUNDING AREAS THIS SEASON

When the leaves turn to soggy mush, the Welsh weather does its thing (rains), and you start eyeing up Christmas jumpers in shop windows while pretending it’s still autumn. But here’s the thing: November might just be Cardiff’s secret season. The tourists have fled, the students are properly settled in, and there’s something beautifully moody about our city wrapped in grey clouds and golden streetlights.

So grab your coat, charge your phone (for those essential moody Instagram shots), and let’s enjoy November.

• Crunch through autumn leaves in Bute Park and collect the prettiest ones for pressing.

• Warm up with a proper Welsh cake and coffee at Pettigrew Tea Rooms or Waterloo Tea.

• Hunt for the last pumpkins at Cardiff Market or Riverside Farmers Market before they’re gone.

• Wrap up warm and walk along the Cardiff Bay Barrage with a coffee in hand.

• Catch a show at the Wales Millennium Centre or St David’s Hall (heating included).

• Plan a cosy pub crawl through Cardiff to find one with an open fire.

• Take your book to the top floor of Central Library and read with a view of the city.

• Master the art of Welsh cakes in your own kitchen (eat the wonky ones immediately).

• Stay up late for Bonfire Night fireworks from Roath Park or Cooper’s Field.

• Treat yourself to seasonal flowers from Cardiff Market’s flower stalls.

• Bake something warming, like cawl or apple crumble, and eat it in your cosiest jumper while watching the rain.

• Take a flask and brave a November hike up the Garth or around Caerphilly Mountain.

• Create a “November in Cardiff” playlist and listen while walking through the arcades.

• Chase the brief winter sunshine and sit by the water at Roath Park Lake (dog-spotting).

• Explore Cardiff Castle’s grounds when they’re dramatically moody in the grey light.

A WELSH HAMPER MADE FOR COLD NIGHTS INDOORS

My name is Emma, and I was lucky enough to grow up on the north Wales coast. I run a little food and drink podcast and Instagram called @Prodiws, born out of a genuine curiosity and respect for the people who drive our brilliant food and drink industry forward.

I have had the privilege of meeting many of them through my work, and I am here to share some of my favourite products to gift your loved ones this festive season.

So, let us get to it. Christmas in Wales. What do I love about this time of year? The biting cold of winter walks, numb fingers, a nose that stings, and toes about to drop off as we search for an open fire. There

is real joy in the air as people head to the pub for a catch-up, exchange gifts, and soak up the festive cheer. Knit jumpers, mulled wine, and enough cheese and crackers to see us well into the new year.

In recent years, my mum and I have started giving food hampers. It has quickly become one of our favourite traditions, and I cannot recommend it enough. There is nothing better than sharing and tasting a mix of local produce with the people you love. The ingenuity of Welsh produce is second to none - here are a few of my favourites I would love in my hamper this year.

EMMA LEWANDOWICZ

SOBREMESA FARMHOUSE ALE

Reminiscent of sitting around a campfire with friends, swapping stories and laughs in the winter months.

Brilliant when paired with a hog roast. And if you catch founders Alys and Adrián at a market, grab some of their crackers too. A masterclass in collaboration and sustainability, they are made with Cradocs using Pembrokeshire Gold rapeseed oil, spent grains and apples from brewing, and topped with Halen Môn sea salt.

MAGGIE’S AFRICAN TWIST

Honestly, this woman is a magician. From her tiny north Wales kitchen, she creates the most incredible flavours. If you want to transform that Boxing Day meat feast, pick up any of Maggie’s seasonings or rubs. My personal favourite is the “Naja This and That” seasoning, though the “Spice Up Lamb” blend is also really special. She is my secret weapon.

TETRIM TEA, RHUBARB ROOT

The perfect antidote to festive indulgence, a beautiful Rhubarb Root tea grown on Anglesey. It hits the soul from the very first sip. A non-profit company that gives back to the community, run by the wonderful Mari Arthur.

CRAFTY PICKLE CO

TREFALDWYN CHEESE

A truly excellent cheese for your festive board, delicate yet with a welcome punch.

Glenn and his team pour their soul into every wheel, and it shows. They make others too, but this one is my favourite.

HIVE MIND MEAD

An absolute joy on the palate, soft honey sweetness that brings a warmth like no other. Brothers Kit and Matt have made a truly exceptional product, one that has won three stars from the Great Taste panel.

They also share a beautifully shot Instagram series on keeping bees, well worth a follow.

HEARTLAND COFFEE LANDMARK BLEND

Outstanding coffee from the North Wales coast. Heartland have always led with purpose, which makes every cup even more satisfying for those who care about provenance. They have blends for everyone, from novices to aficionados. Whether you want something easygoing or truly challenging, Heartland has you covered. I love their Landmark blend, and I cannot wait to try their Christmas roast when it is released.

Based in Crick, Madi and Arthur craft the most delicious fermented foods. I could happily eat an entire jar in one sitting, but for the more restrained, every kraut is perfect in a meaty Boxing Day sandwich. Their flavours are genuinely eye-opening, and they transformed my idea of what sauerkraut could be. They also host workshops for those who want to try fermenting at home.

SNOWDONIA WAGYU RUM

Infused with Wagyu from Snowdonia and distilled by the brilliant Llanfairpwll Distillery, this is a smooth, velvety rum with savoury depth. A first of its kind, Sioned has crafted something perfect for sipping by a Christmas Eve fire. And if you stumble across her Bresaola, grab it; it pairs beautifully with Trefaldwyn cheese and Cradocs biscuits.

And that is it from me. I could go on and on about the incredible food across Wales, but that would end up being tomeshaped. Even in the smallest way, if you can, buy local this Christmas. Perhaps it is trying a different roast at your local coffee shop, or picking up butter from a nearby dairy for your Christmas Day mash. However small, it all matters.

We really are in the best country for it.

I should probably start by admitting that I’m a little bit in love with you, which you probably know. It’s not just the salt (though honestly, where would my chips, roasts, or sanity be without it?), But with you as a family, your ethos, and the way you’ve bottled up Ynys Mon (Anglesey) and somehow managed to sprinkle a bit Adra into every flake.

There’s a moment I come back to often: a camp-fire latte, steaming in my hands, overlooking the Menai Strait on a cold November day. The sort of day when the air stings your cheeks, and you remember that life exists beyond your phone screen. When I finally stop scrolling, stop chasing Christmas deals, and just breathe it all in, the salt in the air, the sky, the sea.

That’s when I’m reminded why I love you. Your salt isn’t just seasoning; it’s stories. It’s childhoods on the island, it’s Sunday roasts at mam’s table, it’s hiraeth in edible form. And your ethos, grounded, generous, ethical, and family-first - makes me love you even more. You’re proof that small, thoughtful things can transform the world (and definitely transform a bowl of lobscows).

So, thank you. For being more than salt. For being home, Adra, bottled up in a jar, and for reminding me to look up, to taste properly, and to season life as well as supper.

Here’s a taste of home, three wonderful recipes curated by Halen Mon to make you stop, take time for yourself, and taste blas o Ynys Mon.

1. CAMPFIRE LATTE (Latte Coelcerth)

This blend of coffee, maple syrup, and smoked sea salt has been a best-seller on our outdoor café menu ever since we opened. During the summer, we have a tipi at Salcote, and sitting under the canvas with one of these brings back childhood memories of campfires. Pure nostalgia. We have Scott to thank for this recipe. He started and owns a genuinely inspiring business, Coaltown Coffee, in South Wales. We recommend seeking out his beans, Black Gold, which we use in the café, and adore.

INGREDIENTS:

• 20g (¾oz) ground Coaltown Coffee: Black Gold No.3

• 1 tsp maple syrup

• 225ml (8fl oz) milk or milk alternative

• Pinch of smoked sea salt

METHOD:

1. Prepare a double shot of espresso according to the machine’s instructions.

2. Stir in a good teaspoon of maple syrup.

3. Steam the milk using your machine and pour gently onto the espresso.

4. Finish with the smoked salt.

2. FRENCH ONION SOUP (Cawl Nionyn Ffrengig)

We took Margaret, Alison’s mother, to Paris for her 89th birthday, fulfilling her lifelong wish. The highlight was a stylish lunch featuring herbed soufflé, cured meats, wine, and Provençal olives, but the real standout was the starter: a profoundly savoury French onion soup that you could lose yourself in, served with the finest baguette croutons we’ve ever tasted. We have a soft spot for this soup, as just one spoonful transports us back to that day. Our version is vegetarian so that more people can enjoy it, and we include a punchy Dijon mustard, dry sherry, and soy sauce for a richer flavour.

Serves: 4

Time: 1 hr 15 mins

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 tbsp salted butter

• 1 tbsp neutral cooking oil

• 5 large white onions, finely sliced

• 2 tsp flaked sea salt

• 1½ tsp soft light brown sugar

• 6 thyme sprigs

• 3 bay leaves

• 175ml (6fl oz) dry white wine

• 2 tsp Dijon mustard (smoky if you have it)

• 1.75 litres/3 pints good-quality vegetable stock

• 2 tbsp light soy sauce

• 1 tbsp black garlic ketchup (optional)

• 4 tbsp dry sherry (such as Manzanilla or Fino)

• Freshly ground black pepper

For the croutons:

• 8 slices of baguette, cut at a slight angle

• 1 garlic clove, peeled

• 8 tsp Dijon mustard (smoky if you have it)

• 150g/5½oz Gruyère cheese, grated

METHOD:

1. Heat the butter and oil in a large saucepan with a lid over medium heat until sizzling.

2. Add onions and salt, cover, and cook for 10 mins until translucent.

3. Uncover, reduce heat to low, and cook for another 10 mins until beginning to turn golden.

4. Sprinkle over sugar and pepper, stir, and cook uncovered for 25 more mins until onions are deeply caramelised (sweet and jammy).

5. Add herbs, wine and mustard. Stir and cook for 2–3 mins until wine absorbed.

6. Add stock, soy sauce and ketchup if using. Simmer uncovered for 20 mins until slightly thickened.

7. Grill croutons: toast bread, rub with garlic, spread mustard, top with cheese, and grill until bubbling.

8. Divide sherry among serving bowls, ladle in soup, add cheesy croutons on top.

9. Tip: Soup can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored in the fridge.

3. TOASTED MILK COOKIES (Bisgedi Llaeth)

Prep time: 10 mins + 3 hrs resting

Cook time: 15 mins

Makes: 18 cookies

This recipe is based on some cookies that Jess had at the wedding of friends, Paddy and Carolyn, in Upstate New York a few years ago. The groom, a chef, made these with his own (also a chef) for the lucky guests. They are the right balance of sweet and salty, soft, and extra toasty depth – the kind of cookies you always want seconds of.

INGREDIENTS:

• 225g butter

• 140g caster sugar

• 2 medium eggs

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

• 50g milk powder

• 100g soft dark brown sugar

• 280g plain flour

• 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

• 1 tsp flaked sea salt

• 225g good-quality dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa solids), chopped

• Flaked sea salt, for scattering

METHOD:

1. Brown the butter: melt in a saucepan over medium heat until nutty and golden. Pour into bowl and leave for 1 hr.

2. Preheat oven to 150°C/130°C fan/300°F/Gas

2. Line a baking sheet.

3. Toast milk powder on a lined baking sheet until golden (check every 4 mins). Cool, then smash into powder.

4. Using a stand mixer, whisk caster sugar, eggs, and vanilla for 5–10 mins until thick ribbons form.

5. Add cooled toasted milk powder, browned butter, and brown sugar. Mix.

6. Add flour, bicarb, and salt. Fold in the chocolate. Chill dough 3 hrs.

7. Roll into balls, place on a tray, and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake 15 mins until golden.

AND THE BEST PART?

You don’t have to wait for a windswept November afternoon on the Menai to enjoy your own taste of Wales. Halen Môn’s cookbook Sea Salt: A Perfectly Seasoned Cookbook (a signed edition makes a brilliant Christmas gift – you can find it at halenmon.com) is packed with recipes to bring that Anglesey magic into your kitchen. Or, if you’d rather experience it first-hand, you can visit Halen Môn for a tour, sink into a seaweed bath, or pick up one of their hampers, wrapped and ready.

EVERYONE’S GOT A BIT OF WELSH IN THEM

You might not have a dragon tattoo on your arm or know every word to Calon Lân, but the second you belt out a hymn at a rugby match (three pints deep, arms around strangers), or find yourself craving a warm Welsh cake from the market, there it is. Your Welsh is showing.

And I don’t think I’m imagining it, but people are falling back in love with the language. Welsh isn’t just something your grandparents mutter at chapel anymore; It’s popping up on TikTok, it’s sneaking into Christmas cards, It’s cariad sliding into teenagers’ group chats, we’re even hearing Welsh on Ru Paul Drag Race! Gwwwon Catrin Feelings. And frankly, it’s about time.

You don’t need to be rolling your rs like you’re ordering tapas in Barcelona, or hissing your ll like a kettle about to boil, to join in. Every diolch at the café, every bore da to your neighbour, every heroic attempt at Llanfairpwll… that ends in a coughing fit, it all counts.

First things first: Welsh is ancient. Like, ‘I’ve been around since before English’ ancient. This language existed long before Shakespeare started scribbling, and it’s still here today, as stubborn as a sheep blocking a country lane.

Josheph Reeder

WHY IT MATTERS

Language isn’t just about communication; it’s about character. Welsh gives you a way to be honest, cheeky, affectionate, and dramatic, sometimes all in the same sentence.

Take Christmas cards. Scribbling Merry Christmas is fine. But writing Nadolig Llawen instantly adds a touch of warmth, a secret handshake that says, ‘You’re one of us’, even if you had to Google how to spell it.

Or imagine proposing on Christmas Day. Sure, “Will you marry me?” works. But whisper, “Wnei di briodi fi?”. And, suddenly you sound mysterious, poetic, and at least 40% sexier. P.s. Practice makes perfect, just don’t accidentally ask for a pint instead.

What I’m noticing now, and what makes me grin, is the rise of affection for the Welsh language. People actually want to learn. Apps like Duolingo have thousands practising their bore da’s on the train, businesses are making bilingual menus, and tourists are desperate to know what ‘cwtch’ means.

And there’s pride. Pride in speaking it, pride in hearing it, pride in watching it thrive. The language has gone from people whispering it in schools, to crowds belting out Yma o Hyd at football matches. Suddenly it’s not something to hide, but something to hashtag!

THE MONTH TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

November sneaks up on us every year. The clocks go back, and suddenly it’s dark before you’ve even boiled the kettle. It’s also the month where hibernation feels tempting, but actually, it’s the perfect time to do the opposite: get out, connect, and give a little of yourself. Because if there’s one thing colder than a frosty morning, it’s loneliness.

Did you know that nearly one in five people in Wales experience loneliness “often” or “always” ( Public Health Wales survey)

When the weather keeps people indoors and the nights stretch on forever, isolation quietly settles in. That’s where you come in.

Last year, through Age Cymru, I started befriending an older woman in Penarth. What began as a simple introduction soon became one of the highlights of my week. We’d meet for cake and coffee, stroll along the seafront with her little dog, and chat about everything from old TV shows to family stories. She told me how much those meet-ups meant to her. But honestly? They meant just as much to me. I didn’t expect it, but befriending gave me perspective, joy, and a friendship I’ll treasure. It’s proof that volunteering isn’t just about giving, it’s about sharing.

Andrea Piacquadio

FIVE WAYS YOU CAN VOLUNTEER THIS WINTER

PICK UP THE PHONE WITH AGE CYMRU

Join their Friend in Need service and give a 30-minute call each week to someone who needs a friend. Volunteers have already made more than 9,500 calls and every one has made a difference.

WALK THE DOGS AT CARDIFF DOGS HOME

Become the highlight of a rescue dog’s day. Fresh air, wagging tails, and the kind of gratitude you’ll feel in every happy bark.

HELP AT A FOOD BANK

Demand soars in winter. From sorting tins to handing out parcels, you’ll be part of a lifeline for families in need.

BEFRIEND IN YOUR COMMUNITY

It doesn’t always have to be official. Check in on neighbours, pop round for a cuppa, or help with small errands. Sometimes the simplest gestures mean the most.

BROWSE VOLUNTEER CARDIFF

From admin help to gardening projects, there’s a huge menu of opportunities; you’ll find something that matches your skills and time.

WHAT YOU’LL GET BACK

Volunteering isn’t just about helping others; it offers a serious boost to your own life too! When the urge to hibernate hits, getting out and giving your time can connect you with new friends (furry or otherwise), giving your mood a real lift, science shows it helps fight stress and loneliness.

Crucially, it reminds you what truly matters during the festive season. Whether you’re making a phone call, walking a dog, or stacking tins for an hour, giving a little of yourself can brighten someone’s entire winter. And, from personal experience, it’ll absolutely brighten yours too, because the best gift in the season of giving is always time.

THE FESTIVE FASHION HACKS

Wear it twice, rent it once, style it forever, your guide to a sustainable Christmas wardrobe that still sparkles.

Every December, the same dilemma sneaks up on us: a calendar full of parties and nothing to wear that hasn’t already made an appearance on Instagram. Enter TikTok Shop with a glittery mini dress for £6, designed to last about as long as the office karaoke session. We wear it once, it sheds sequins before dessert, and by Boxing Day, it’s in the landfill.

Here’s the hard truth: the UK bins 336,000 tonnes of clothing every year (WRAP). That’s 30 St. David’s Halls stuffed with fast-fashion regret. Add in the “wear it once” culture of TikTok, and the pile only grows.

My nan would be tamping. She wore the same red wool coat every Christmas for three decades, accessorised with nothing more than a handbag full of Quality

Street, and always looked immaculate. Legend. It turns out, she was way ahead of the sustainability curve.

So, how do you channel sparkle without waste? Simple: shop smarter, rent the glam, and go second-hand.

1. RENT THE DRESS, KEEP THE COMPLIMENTS

Want the wow factor without the guilt? Renting is the secret. Platforms like, By Rotation and HURR let you borrow designer pieces from Rixo, Rat & Boa, Ganni, and even The Vampire’s Wife for a fraction of the price. You get the look, the photos, the sparkle, but instead of collecting dust in your wardrobe, it goes back into circulation for someone else to enjoy. * Just be careful with that glass of red.

2. VINTED: YOUR FESTIVE TREASURE HUNT

Think of Vinted as Santa’s sleigh, but full of sequins, velvet, and feathers. From tartan minis to sparkly clutches, you’ll find it all for less than the price of a mulled wine at Winter Wonderland. And if you sell last year’s one-hit wonders? You’ve basically unlocked guilt-free shopping.

3. BUY LOCAL

If you’re in Cardiff, skip the high street chaos. Dejavu in Pontcanna is a boutique stacked with preloved gems, think Dior, Max Mara, and party-ready dresses that deserve another outing. Knights Vintage and Beyond Retro are goldmines for velvet blazers, silk slips, and sequins that feel unique, not massproduced.

4. EBAY: THE OG

Before Vinted, there was eBay. Still one of the best spots for secondhand designer finds, it’s perfect for scoring that statement heel or sequin jumpsuit, vintage suits, and let’s be honest, winning a lastminute auction is more thrilling than pulling a cracker with your boss.

5. THE CHRISTMAS JUMPER UPGRADE

Novelty knits are fun for about five minutes, but most are made from cheap, plasticky fabric that ends up in the bin. Instead, invest

in a jumper you’ll wear beyond December: a classic Fair Isle, a chunky cable knit, or retro wool. Even better? Swap with a mate. One person’s Rudolph is another person’s reindeer chic.

6. STYLE IT SMART

Here’s the radical bit: rewear what you already own. Layer a charityshop slip dress with a velvet blazer, swap heels for chunky boots, and borrow your mum’s sparkly clutch. Mix it up with vintage earrings, a belt, or even a borrowed coat. Nobody remembers outfits as much as you think, except your nan, and she’ll just be proud you saved your pennies.

WHY IT MATTERS

Every year, the UK buys over one billion new items of clothing, and yet 65% of us admit to binning garments that are still wearable (Oxfam/WRAP). By choosing preloved or rental, you’re keeping clothes in circulation, cutting down on waste, and making space for real style stories, the kind where you can say, “This old thing? It’s rented Rixo” instead of “TikTok Shop, £6, lasted one wash.”

Christmas is about sparkle, yes, but it’s also about tradition, stories, and, in my family’s case, trying not to spill gravy on your best outfit. This year, dress in a way that makes you feel amazing and does right by the planet: rent it, thrift it, rewear it, restyle it.

Because if you wouldn’t throw away your Christmas dinner after one bite, why treat your clothes any differently? Proud of that one.

Photography by James Matthews-Mitchell

Right, let’s be honest – we’ve all been there. One minute you’re innocently browsing cocktail videos at 2 am, the next you’re standing in your kitchen wearing your “good” apron, aggressively shaking a martini shaker like you’re auditioning for Tom Cruise’s stunt double in the movie, Cocktail.

But here’s the thing: that descent into home bartending madness? It’s absolutely glorious. The clink of ice, the satisfying thwack of a proper shake, that moment when you taste your creation and think “bloody hell, I actually did that” – it’s pure kitchen alchemy, and frankly, we’re here for it.

We’ve teamed up with Lab22, Cardiff’s temple of liquid artistry, to bring you some show-stopping cocktail recipes that’ll have your mates questioning whether you’ve secretly enrolled in mixology school. These aren’t your standard “throw some gin in a glass and hope for the best” affairs, we’re talking proper, Instagram-worthy, “did I really just make this?” cocktails.

COCKTAIL RECIPES THAT WILL IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY THIS WINTER

MULLED NEGRONI WITH LAB 22

(Pictured on the left)

270ml gin | 270ml sweet vermouth | 270ml Campari | 2 star anise | 1 cinnamon stick | 4 cloves | 3 strips orange peel | 190ml cold water

Because why choose between a Negroni and mulled wine when you can have both? This is batch cocktail genius – part Italian aperitivo, part Christmas market romance. Infuse your spirits with warming spices for 10-12 hours (patience, grasshopper), strain, add water, and freeze. The result? A bottle of liquid Christmas magic that’s ready whenever you are.

HOW TO MAKE IT: This one’s a pour-and-go situation – straight from your freezer bottle over ice in a rocks glass. No shaking, no stirring, just pure convenience wrapped in cashmere-jumperby-the-fire vibes.

CHOLOCATE ORANGE ESPRESSO MARTINI

25ml vodka | 20ml Kahlua | 10ml Cointreau | 5ml Creme de Cacao | 50ml espresso | 5ml sugar syrup | Garnish: Grated chocolate

The espresso martini’s glamorous cousin, who went to finishing school and learned French. This festive beauty takes the beloved coffee cocktail and whispers sweet chocolate-orange nothings into its caffeinated soul. It’s sophisticated enough for your boss’s Christmas party, yet comforting enough for those “it’s 3 pm on a Tuesday but I deserve nice things” moments.

HOW TO MAKE IT:

Give it a proper shake with ice (we’re talking vigorous, like you mean business), then strain into a chilled martini glass. Top with grated chocolate and prepare to feel smugly accomplished.

GOLDEN SLEIGH

30ml Creme de Cacao (clear) | 15ml Licor 43 | 30ml orange juice | 25ml single cream | 1 dash orange bitters | Garnish: Orange peel

Meet the Golden Cadillac’s more festive sibling – all the decadence, twice the Christmas spirit. This creamy dream tastes like liquid luxury with hints of vanilla, citrus, and “I definitely shouldn’t be having a second one, but here we are.”

HOW TO MAKE IT:

Shake all ingredients with ice like you’re conducting a tiny, delicious orchestra, then strain into a martini glass. Try not to purr with satisfaction on the first sip (spoiler: you will).

ALL THE JINGLE LADIES

30ml vodka | 10ml ginger wine | 10ml apple liqueur | 25ml lemon juice | 10ml sugar syrup | Top with ginger ale | Garnish: Lemon peel

Beyoncé would definitely approve of this sparkling sensation. It’s got the festive warmth of ginger, the crisp bite of apple, and enough fizz to make you feel like you’re celebrating something important (like making it through another Monday). This highball is sweet but not cloying, festive but not overwhelming –basically the cocktail equivalent of your most charming friend

HOW TO MAKE IT:

Shake everything except the ginger ale with ice, strain into a highball glass filled with fresh ice, then top with ginger ale. Garnish with lemon peel and prepare to feel festively fabulous.

ABOUT LAB 22

Sitting high on Chippy Lane above a very famous sausage roll shop is the award-winning Lab22. It has become my go-to sanctuary for life’s important moments – that crucial 5 pm “the day is done” cocktail, those late-night Monday sessions when the moonshine jazz flows as smoothly as the drinks, and those Christmas parties where you need a venue that actually gets the art of celebration. It’s the kind of place where the bartenders are part scientist, part artist, part therapist, and completely brilliant at what they do.

Of course, if you don’t fancy shaking or stirring in your kitchen, you can

always pop down to Lab22 and let the professionals do the cocktails. You can even ask them to make one of these for you –though fair warning, once you experience their bartending wizardry in person, you might never want to leave. Sometimes it’s worth admitting that while home bartending is brilliant fun, there’s something gorgeous about watching a proper mixologist work their craft, and we are here to support local businesses through the art of cocktail drinking.

If you don’t already have Bethan Elfyn on your radar, where have you been hiding? Since the late 90s, she’s been the voice championing Welsh music, the new, the raw, the brilliant, and she’s still at it. From BBC Radio One to Radio Wales, she’s interviewed icons, unearthed gems, and kept the airwaves fizzing with the kind of live sessions that make you feel like you’re right there in the studio. Every Saturday at 7 pm, she takes to the mic on BBC Radio Wales, spinning music from every corner of the globe, but always saving the best seat for fresh Welsh talent.

Bethan’s show is bold, current, and unashamedly passionate, not just about music, but about giving women and new artists a platform.

So, who better to set the soundtrack for November? Over to Bethan to share the tracks that should be on your playlist this month.

How do you listen to music these days? I love my playlists! Streaming, radio, gigs, festivals, Walkmans, ipods, telly, or a shop tannoy - however you listen, do you love the constant companion? I love the access we have to music, and that music is a soundtrack to life, capturing important moments for us in a picture wrapped in a song! I listen every day; driving, cleaning, walking, gardening, pottering. These are the best times to listen, maybe the noise is a distraction or maybe it’s an addiction, an endless thirst for something to soothe the soul. My favourite sounds are sad songs and big vocals, but I’m also equally bullied by the kids’ car playlist! They rule on the school run, but I left Demon Hunters out of this month’s choices!

Mary Wycherley

I ask again, how are you going to listen to these sounds? I’m hopeful that you’ll enjoy a cosy duvet day, or stomp on a crisp wintery walk in the late afternoon sun, embracing the companionship, the sound-blanket of warmth. A soundtrack to help us dream, to urge us to gaze at the stars, to be lightfooted on earth and find joy, to take us out of our daily humdrum of woes and help us soar above big open skies! Yes, that’s my hope for the autumn playlist, as that’s what it does for me!

Multi-disciplinary artist and producer, Cate Le Bon’s (from West Wales) new album Michelangelo’s dying is going to be on repeat this year till I find all the hidden nooks and crannies in the songs, the words and the instruments. Cate’s songs become earworms when you least expect them! I’ve always loved her beautiful voice, her visual aesthetic and how carefully crafted her artistic persona is. She is the ultimate gracious but otherworldly artist!

IVOR WOODS - ONE NIGHT

Electronic alt-pop from South Wales queer artist Ivor Woods. They are an exciting producer, composer and performer, and the songs have such depth and range that I’m transported to another place - the best type of escapism!

GULP - WILDFLOWER

A Scottish band formed by Guto Pryce (Super Furry Animals) and Lindsey Leven - this is retro heaven - warm, fuzzy, luscious pop - ‘music to sound like a road trip’ they say, and I love that description.

CERYS HAFANA - HELYNT

RHYFEDDOL

Acclaimed composer and multiinstrumentalist of avant-folk from mid Wales, and a phenomenal genrebreaking artist. Young, prolific harpist, but an artist who always writes in a way that entices, weaving webs of rhythms and melodies, challenging the boundaries of musical boundaries. Music to get lost to!

GWENNO MORGAN - SOAR

Pianist and composer who has written compositions that are haunting, vulnerable, and so full of portrayals of the landscapes of Wales through jazz, classical and ambient sounds, that it feels like a painting rather than music! Extraordinary talent!

WHAT TO WATCH

NOVEMBER

If you’re going to take TV recommendations from anyone, it might as well be someone who’s made a career out of it! When he’s not delivering his trademark wit and cheeky commentary from the sofa on Gogglebocs Cymru (S4C’s brilliant Welsh take on Gogglebox), you’ll find Carwyn Davies on the radio discussing what’s worth your time on the box. Being from Penygroes, he knows a thing or two about appreciating good telly during those long Welsh winter nights. Over to you, Carwyn…

I’m a total TV fanatic. I’m on the sofa watching it, I get filmed watching it, and when I’m not, I’m on the radio chatting about what’s worth watching. So, with the dark November nights setting in and everyone trying to save a bit of money before Christmas, here are my picks of the month. Put your comfies on, grab a hot chocolate or a big bowl of cawl, and get ready to binge some brilliant shows.

THE GUEST (BBC iPlayer)

The Guest on BBC iPlayer is honestly such a good watch if you’re after a proper twisty thriller. It’s only four parts, set right here in Cardiff, and it follows Fran (Eve Myles), this super successful businesswoman, and her new employee Ria (Gabrielle Creevy). At first, they click, but it quickly gets messy— full of secrets, lies, and some seriously dodgy power games. There’s a shocking turn that completely flips the story and pulls you into this dark, cat-andmouse vibe. Honestly, it’s the perfect November night binge with a hot chocolate in hand.

MONSTER: THE ED GEIN STORY (Netflix)

Okay, so if you need something creepy to watch on a dark November night, this new Netflix series is perfect. Just because Halloween’s over doesn’t mean spooky season has to end, right? It’s eight episodes and follows Ed Gein, the convicted murderer and suspected serial killer, set in 1950s rural Wisconsin. Charlie Hunnam plays him, and Laurie Metcalf (yep, from Roseanne) is in it too, which is wild casting. It looks eerie, messed up, and super atmospheric, the kind of show that makes you want to turn the lights down low and freak yourself out a little.

SLOW HORSES (Apple TV)

This show is such a fun surprise. It’s a darkly funny spy drama about a bunch of misfits who got shoved into the reject corner of MI5. Every character has messed up their career in some way, and now they’re stuck under Jackson Lamb, played brilliantly (and hilariously) by Gary Oldman. He’s grumpy, sharp, and honestly steals every scene. The mix of humor, tension, and actual spy intrigue keeps it from ever feeling dull. All five series are now on Apple TV, making it the perfect November binge.

UNKNOWN NUMBER (Netflix,

Documentary)

THE GOLDEN GIRLS (Disney+)

All 180 episodes are on Disney+ to watch! If you’re looking for something cozy to brighten up the dark November nights, The Golden Girls is a total gem. Four older women, Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia, share a house in Miami, navigating love, friendship, and cheesecake with nonstop laughs. Dorothy’s sarcastic comebacks, Rose’s wild St. Olaf stories, Blanche’s endless flirting, and Sophia’s brutal oneliners make every episode a treat. It’s hilarious, heartwarming, and feels like a warm blanket when the nights get long. Honestly, it’s the perfect comfort watch this month.

I just finished watching the documentary Unknown Number on Netflix and wow, it was way more intense than I expected. At first, it feels like a typical cyberbullying case, a teenage girl and her boyfriend getting these awful, relentless messages from some mystery number. The way it builds is super creepy, adding tension that mirrors those heavy, dark November nights. But then, when the investigation digs deeper, the twist honestly floored me. I thought I knew where it was heading, but nope. It’s disturbing, sad, and makes you think about trust and online safety. Definitely worth a watch.

WHERE TO FIND THE BEST AUTUMNAL DRINKS IN CARDIFF

There are some moments of joy that can only really be experienced in autumn - like the sound of a particularly crunchy leaf underfoot or rediscovering last year’s favourite knitted jumper in the back of your wardrobe. For me, the most magical of these is the first sip of a pumpkin spice latte from my favourite local coffee shop. That is when it feels like autumn has officially begun.

Meet Lauren,

Cardiff’s resident foodie with a camera and an impressive talent for finding the city’s hidden gems. When she’s not photographing the most Insta-worthy dishes around town, she’s busy “eating her way around Cardiff and beyond” - and we’re here for every delicious recommendation. Lauren’s got her finger firmly on the pulse of Cardiff’s café culture, so when autumn rolled around, we knew she’d be the perfect person to guide us to the city’s cosiest corners and warmest drinks. Over to you, Lauren.

The fact that we have so many great independent coffee shops in Cardiff speaks volumes about the creativity and community-mindedness of our city. Each one offers something unique. So, I could probably name 50 exceptional local eateries and still have more to mention, but these five spots best fit the criteria for cosiness, creativity, and deliciousness (a very important factor!) - and keep me coming back again and again

SPARROW, CLIFTON STREET

Since it opened three years ago, Sparrow has become a bustling hub of community and is well-loved by East Cardiff locals. Their syrups are all homemade in-store, and they off er both a delicious pumpkin spice latte and, more recently, an indulgent golden milk made with turmeric and other warming spices. They also serve Carrottop Bakery bakes here, but be warned, their Biscoff blondies should come with a disclaimer because I now need to have one at least every week.

BLWM, FAIROAK ROAD.

Year-round, Blŵm dream up interesting and unusual drink specials, but I feel like autumn is when they really come into their own. I personally fl ip-fl op between their rose latte and their pistachio hot chocolate as my go-to, but I go easy; that is why I would encourage repeat visits to try their menu! They also have a lifestyle section in-store, full of the most beautiful gifts and homeware pieces, and it takes a great deal of self-control not to purchase a new candle or some dried fl owers every time I visit.

ELEMENTS CAFE, WOODVILLE ROAD

Elements Cafe is best known for their range of delicious Asian desserts (their bingsu needs to be on your Cardiff food bucket list!), but they also have an extensive drinks menu featuring matcha, Hong Kong-style milk tea, and lavender latte. Best served paired with warm peanut mochi.

KHIONE, DUKE STREET ARCADE

For thick, rich Italian-style hot chocolate, Khione Sicilian Delicatessen is the place to go! Tucked away in one of the comparatively quieter arcades, Khione makes for the ideal setting to sit back, relax, and enjoy this super indulgent hot chocolate. If you’re like me and have a sweet tooth, you could also get an authentic Italian pastry to go alongside this - and I can vouch for how good they are dunked into the hot chocolate!

SCAREDYCATS CAFE, WORKING STREET

When it comes to creative seasonal drinks, Scaredycats Cafe is one step ahead. From colourful iced drinks like blueberry matcha to nostalgiainspired autumnal drinks like last year’s blackberry crumble latte, there is something for everyone. Their syrups are prepared in-house and they also off er a selection of vegan cakes and bakes. There’s also a selection of board games available to play free of charge - if that doesn’t sound like the recipe for a perfect, cosy afternoon, I don’t know what does!

THESE THREE THINGS

Welcome to These Three Things - the podcast that asks which one person, place and treasured possession have made a profound impact upon your life and why?

Each month, Deb sits down with a special (Welsh) guest to hear about the one person, place and item that left a resounding impression upon their life. We all have a certain individual who helped shape our destiny in some way, be it a teacher, mentor, family member or complete stranger.

We all have that place, a uniquely memorable spot we call ‘home’. A place where we can exhale, feel free, be inspired or simply belong. Plus, we all have that treasured possession, we could not live without. Finding your, These Three Things is not always an easy list to formulate, but a great opportunity to delve into the emotional archive of your life and ask who has helped shape and make me the person I am today? Where do I feel my happiest self and if I were stripped of all my belongings, which one treasured

possession would I keep and carry with me?

Working as a public speaking coach for 21 years, Deb has recorded hundreds of presentations with her clients. She was moved to bring these incredible conversations to a wider audience, so in spring 2024, she turned her passion into a podcast and These Three Things was born.
