COSY CORNERS

As we bid farewell to summer, we’re ready to embrace autumn. Nights grow longer, temperatures drop and the coats we’ve stashed away are pulled out of storage. With the brisk wind, not forgetting the rain that forever engulfs our city, the warm inside beckons us.

We’re here to share some of Cardiff’s cosiest corners to spend time with those closest to us, or escape for some well-deserved alone time.

CHANCE AND COUNTERS

When you’re walking up the stairs to Chance and Counters, you’re greeted with a blanket of warm air, offering a cosy escape from the Welsh weather. Chance and Counters, the board game café, couldn’t be a better place to get cosy with your friends this season. Offering over 700 board games that are constantly refreshed, a game to suit everyone’s taste is guaranteed! Whether hot chocolates and wholesome games are your thing or a burger and a beer is more to your taste, you’ll find it all under one roof.

Chance and Counters is the brainchild of three friends, Luke, Steve and Richard. Like a game of dominoes, their love of board games started with one person who went on to topple the rest. Launched in Bristol in 2016, Chance and Counters eventually made its way over the bridge in 2018 and is now housed in a beautiful Victorian building on Cardiff’s High Street. Chance and Counters combine a friendly ambience, shelves of games and a snug interior, creating the ultimate homely vibe. The choice of games range from modern complex games to family

classics such as Jenga and Monopoly, although if you want to avoid ruining friendships and breaking up your family, we’d perhaps advise a less tense game than Monopoly. Board games are a fast way to get to know people and bring out people’s true colours, for better or worse! Rhys Chamberlain, Director of Chance and Counters, brands the cafe as “the home of competitive people”, with losers often settling their table’s tab.

October welcomes various events at Chance and Counters, including their weekly ‘Social Gaming’ event on Mondays from 6pm, offering a chilled evening for people to drop in and meet like-minded people. If you’re looking for plans for October 31st, you’re in luck! They’ll be throwing their annual Halloween get-together, which promises spooktacular games from their vast library, spine-chilling cocktails and a buffet to satisfy all taste buds and cater to all requirements.

Are you a bad winner or a sore loser? You probably already know the answer. Tickets for all these events can be found on their website: www. chanceandcounters.com/shop.

MAASI 'S

Calling St Luke’s Church Hall in Canton ‘home’, Pakistani café Maasi’s produces traditional family-recipe meals that will warm your inside. Maasi, meaning ‘auntie’ in Punjabi, is a loving term used for people on your mother’s side, such as mum’s friends and cousins. Built on the foundation of family, owner Sabrina Khan leads an allfemale team, aiming to inspire the next generation of women in her culture. Most people say that nothing beats mum’s cooking, and Maasi’s truly embodies that. The eatery has built up so much of a reputation that customers have come from as far as Scotland to enjoy a taste of Pakistan.

With a mixture of Sabrina’s heritage, both Pakistani and Welsh, her food is packed with flavour. She serves the food she grew up eating, carefully selecting childhood favourites, such as the naanwich. Sabrina describes this dish as “a fluffy naan, to soak up all the yummy flavours, topped with a curry of choice (chicken, paneer or chickpeas) and smothered in a chilli and coriander chutney, topped with slaw and pickled red onions”.

Sabrina has often been told that her food is comforting, memoryevoking and served with pure love by her customers. Her customers have also remarked that they feel as though they have been hugged after indulging in her food. Maasi’s Curry Club is also a huge hit with regulars and newbies alike!

Sharing the food Sabrina grew up eating brings the community together. Their regulars now feel like part of the family and Maasi’s have been entrusted with helping host their big days, such as weddings and christenings. Being in a church hall naturally nurtures a sense of community as it’s in the heart of Canton and a place where people come together in celebration.

As a testament to their hard work and dedication, Maasi’s were awarded ‘The Food Award Wales’ in ‘The Best of Cardiff’ category two years on the trot in June. Their community-minded spirit and delectable dishes are what define them.

PARADISE GARDEN

Based on Cardiff’s City Road, Paradise Garden harnesses creativity from all corners of the city to create intimate gatherings in their bar, garden and yurt. Their events are designed to encourage diversity and exploration, making for great conversations. They carefully select music to celebrate genres that aren’t as heard in other establishments and compliment their intimate venue.

With a long-standing history at the venue, Paradise Garden’s outdoor yurt offers a relaxing hangout. During the summer months, the sun beams off the side with the verdant plants hanging down, but in the winter months, it transforms into a cosy escape from the outdoor elements. With a glass of mulled wine (or whatever your tipple of choice) in hand, this is undoubtedly one of Cardiff’s cosiest corners.

Founders David Bull and Esther Taylor, both from a music and events background, are fully immersed in various music communities. They find they’re particularly drawn to those “who have a strong identity and are exploring fresh ideas in Wales and further afield. We love it when people come to us with unique

concepts,” David tells us. Paradise Garden is a welcoming space for music lovers, boasting the only audiophile speakers (meaning the speakers produce music without distortion) in Cardiff, offering an “unbeatable immersive listening experience when DJs play”. During October the venue has many events planned, along with an extra special celebration.

On the first weekend of the month, it’s the first birthday of Paradise Gardens. They will be marking the occasion with a weeklong celebration filled with live musicians, both fan-favourite artists and those from further afield. They also have pre-parties booked with promoters Haws and Fam Jam, ahead of their events at Jacobs Market. Don’t think they’ve forgotten about Halloween either! They’ll be treating us to an extra spooky party with none other than

LE MANDELA

if you’re looking to warm your stomach and soul somewhere in the city, Le Mandela located on Penarth Road have curated their menu with an amalgamation of delicious dishes from various regions in Africa.

Cameroonian brothers, Ulrich, Benoit and Steve, took over the restaurant from their Mother, Marie, in 2017 who armed them with her recipes for both the dishes and success. With Ulrich as the General Manager, Head Chef Benoit (who has previously worked for chef James Sommerin) and Steve currently working as a souschef, training in college to become advance his cooking career, this restaurant is fully equipped with a passionate, skilled team to provide an authentic African dining experience in Cardiff.

The band of brothers believe that “African cuisine is all too often overlooked and far too underrated.” Their aim is to bring a touch of their heritage to Cardiff “to show you just how good it can really be”. With the recipe that follows, Le Mandela are offering a taste of Africa without the price of a plane ticket attached.

To recreate their delectable Jollof rice dish, much loved South of the Sahara and along the coast of West Africa, you’ll need:

6 fresh tomatoes

200g tomato purée

2 tbsp fresh or dry thyme

2 tbsp fresh rosemary

6 Romano peppers (800g)

Easy cook basmati rice

900ml vegetable stock (might need a extra 200ml)

5 tbsp curry powder

5 garlic cloves

3 red onions

4 bay leaves

Method: Pour the rice in a bowl and rinse under cold water, drain and set aside. Get your peppers, fresh tomatoes, garlic and ginger in a food processor and blitz until smooth. Dice your onion, put it in a bowl and then set aside. Heat the oil in a large casserole-style dish over a medium heat and add in your diced onions, frying until caramelised. Then, add in the tomato purée over 2-3 mins, stirring often. Add the blitzed pepper mixture and fry for an additional 5 minutes, then adding the herbs, spices and 1 tsp salt. Fry for a further 1-2 mins, then stir in the rice to coat. Pour in the stock and stir, cooking on a low heat. This allows the rice to absorb the sauce properly, cook evenly, and not burn on the bottom! Stirring minimally ensures evenly cooked rice while keeping the grains separate. Et voilà, you have a dish that is just screaming to be taken to a celebration!

Whether you’re craving their Egusi, Ntaba, or Jollof Rice (that you haven’t had to cook yourself) from the cosy corners of your own home, Le Mandela offers South Wales delivery every Sunday. There’s really nothing stopping you getting your flavoursome fix!

COSY CINEMA w

here are dreams made? Disneyland. More specifically, this is where the idea of the Cosy Cinema came about. As John Colderley and his family were queuing in the heat of Florida, it left them wondering if there was a small cinema with air conditioning that was completely immersive where they could take a break for a short while. Later, John took his lightbulb moment seriously, going on to develop a cinema pod in his back garden which soon expanded. Cosy Cinema now has 9 pods across two sites, Dinas Powys and Sophia Gardens.

Cosy Cinema is a new way to enjoy time and space that incorporates values as old as time, the enjoyment of spending time with your loved ones. A heated space in the autumn and winter with no windows, it really does feel like your own private cinema. The seating doubles up as a king-size bed, so if guests want to stay the night, they are welcome to do so! “It’s all part of the unique Cosy Cinema experience”, John tells us. Cosy Cinema also allows guests to bring their own gaming consoles so that you can game

the night away without interruptions. With den-esque pods, they provoke memories of sleepovers you had as a child. In John’s words, “what is more comforting than that?”.

Cinemas offer a way for people to escape and unwind. John says, “My wife Sian and I are very proud to be helping people to relax and take time out from the madness of modern-day life, even for just a few hours”. Cosy Cinema has seen people from all over the country escape and enjoy the unique experience. While both John and Sian “love traditional cinema,” they appreciate there are aspects that others don’t like. Thanks to the Cosy Cinema, they now have a personalised experience that suits them. Their pods have also been the setting for four proposalsand counting! Cosy Cinema will soon reveal their latest pods, which will fit up to six people.

CARDIFF HUBS

we’ve all seen those cosy reading nooks, filled with blankets and cushions that you can curl up into with a book, just like in the movies, but who has the time to create one in their own house? Instead of finding the time and space to create one, there are places in our very own city that provide them for us. They appear cosier as the autumn nights draw in and the appeal to stay indoors strengthens. Cardiff Hubs and Libraries are staple parts of our communities. Scattered throughout Cardiff, they provide various services, from all-important book and computer access to housing advice.

Last winter, Cardiff Hubs and Libraries introduced everyone to join them in their Hubs for ‘Warm Welcome Spaces’. This scheme keeps you cosier than ever, inviting local residents into their heated spaces for a hot drink, a chat and to use the facilities. At the heart of the Hubs is the aspect of community. They incorporate this by offering a wide range of events and activities for all ages, such as

Tai Chi, Lego club, dementia cafés, gardening clubs and carers cafés. The clubs and activities are a great way to come together, make friends and have an overall positive effect on your well-being. Whether you want to curl up with a book or meet some new people to chat with, there’s a cosy corner ready for you to settle in.

The libraries have what feels like an unlimited amount of books, so much so that it can be hard to select your book of choice! In need of some inspiration? No problem. Andrea Currie from Cardiff Council has you covered, “One of our hottest titles right now is ‘Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow’.” It’s a book about friendship and betrayal set in the world of video game design. Not your cup of tea? There’s plenty of other genres to choose from.

The Review

With Lydia Bowen-Williams

I’m Lydia, an actor, self-proclaimed cinephile, born and raised in Cardiff. With an undying love for film, tv and theatre, every aspect of my life revolves around the arts. Film Probe is a way for me to grow my knowledge and share my passion with like-minded cinema and theatre lovers!

Wolf (2023) is a newly released BBC limited series that you can sink your teeth into. With six episodes available, this gruesome murder mystery layers suspense with each moment. Adapted and created by Megan Gallagher, Wolf begins with a dual narrative of two rather opposing situations. On the one side we see a detective searching for answers about his missing brother and on the other, a middle class family targeted by two clownish home invaders. The story appears to be tame but once you reach episode three, the tonal change makes it hard to look away. Wolf begins slowly, somewhat engaging, but once the real plot starts to unravel this series is truly binge-worthy. As you get deeper into each episode we notice the two stories are linked in more ways than one but what will be the ultimate reveal? How are these characters all connected?

With several ties to Cardiff and South Wales, the majority of the talented cast are local. Filmed in neighboring towns Monmouthshire, Pontyclun and Penarth, this series drew on its strong Welsh roots and made a home in Cardiff whilst filming at the Enfys Studios.

Murder, Outlandish

and Beautiful Welsh

Overall, the plot and execution was incredibly thrilling, although I must mention the unusual use of comedy. In what can only be described as an intense thriller, there were often moments of comic relief which felt unnatural and foreign within the series. Actors Iwan Rheon and Sacha Dhawan carried an unusual tone throughout their scenes, blurring the fine line between terror and comedy. They were provided with plenty to work with and delivered memorable characters in Detectives Molina and Honey. Although I appreciated the intention to interject comedy to this series, as a whole, it hindered several moments from being taken seriously.

In saying that, Wolf is a series full of mature content in a variety of forms and is not for the fainthearted. Despite the light hearted and satirical moments, Wolf at its core is a brutal murder mystery with some incredibly heavy content. Ukwell Roach, who played the role of Jack Caffery, single handedly

To keep up with all things film, you can follow Lydia over on Instagram: @filmprobe

carried the series into the success it is. Without his tremendous acting and truly likable performance, Wolfwould have been lacking humanity and a character to root for.

Following two stories can often be overwhelming, as waiting for the plots to collide is the majority of suspense. Wolf undeniably delivered a memorable ending, for mystery thrillers the ending is the be all and end all and I can confirm this reveal is worth the watch. Detective Jack Caffery’s journey of self discovery and acceptance had heart and emotion. His character arc was a constant and reliable part of the series, as the plot slowly built around his tragic backstory and allowed the viewer to truly connect with him. Sadly, when the story switched to the comical home invasion, the story lost its credibility. Detectives Molina and Honey felt reminiscent of Billy Loomis and Stu Macher from the original Scream (1996) movie; dangerous psychopaths with cruel intentions and a light splattering of taunting, mocking rage. Molina and Honey’s scenes felt incredibly detached from the primary story. They provided a bold change of mood and borderline attempted to lighten the serious subject matter of Caffery’s story.

To conclude, Wolf is a dynamic, thrilling series with a handful of disturbing moments juxtaposed with comedic terror. Having a unique use of music and cinematography, Wolf (2023) felt professional and undeniably well written and performed. Despite the character flaws and handful of uncomfortable attempts at comedy, Wolf should have committed to one genre. Ultimately that would have made the final plot reveal even more shocking.

AT HOME WITH EDENSTONE

for renowned developer, Edenstone Homes, their uncompromising care and attention to detail when it comes to the properties they build is their hallmark. From finding exclusive locations, engaging with the environment and community to selecting the finest materials for an impressive finish, their exemplary approach has earned them accolades and awards.

At their Beaufort Park development, a collection of just 23, fourand five-bedroom luxury detached homes, the intent is to create one of, if not the, most prestigious addresses in Lisvane, already one in of the most sought-after postcodes in Cardiff.

The properties are generously proportioned with some extending to well over 4,000 sq ft., with layouts that have been thoughtfully designed to provide the best in contemporary living and offer each homeowner the flexibility to compose spaces that suit their lifestyles, including family areas, studies, dressing rooms, gyms and home entertainment rooms.

In recognition of the exceptional premium standard, the first phase of Beaufort Park has been a great success. To mark the

sale of the impressive ‘Blenheim’ show home, Edenstone Homes invited award-winning chef James Sommerin into the kitchen for a celebratory event before the new owners took residence.

For James, home, is the concept and namesake of his Michelinstarred restaurant in Penarth.

Achieving the honour just six months after opening, his new venture follows his previous eponymous restaurant, which was forced to close during the pandemic. When it came time to rebuild and reimagine his ethos for the new premises, James wanted the personal connection of hospitality, and a more intimate setting, to be at the forefront. For the Sommerin’s it is a truly family-run business, James’ partnering chef is his daughter, Georgia, and his wife, Lou, and extended family are all involved in the restaurant, and patrons are welcomed as guests in a relaxed setting.

Eating at home has never been this elevated. While there is a strong emotional connection to the idea of opening their own dining room to serve you dinner, there is no such relaxation

Whether we were staying at home, improving our home, or moving home, recent years have offered an insightful time to consider what our homes mean to us and say about us.

Properties at Beaufort Park are in high demand with over 60 % already sold

in the high culinary service of their fine dining tasting menu. Courses are derived on seasonality and the superb quality of available ingredients, often locally sourced, enhanced with skill and technique to extract the most sublime flavour, and plated with delicate and precise presentation. It is easy to see the synergy of styles and approaches that made Edenstone Homes and James Sommerin a great pairing to collaborate on a show home dining experience.

Martin Taylor, Managing Director of Edenstone Group, hosted representatives from Edenstone’s planning, design and build team at Beaufort Park, including Sales Director, Adele McCoy, alongside industry partners from Octopus Energy, Asset Mortgage Solutions, United Welsh Housing, and Vicky Dudbridge, Director of Residential Development Sales at

Savills, to enjoy some of James’ signature delicious fare. In between explanations of the exquisite dishes, and enjoying the sublime summer produce itself, there was time for attendees to reflect on the success of the first phase of development, the continuation of phase two and the new show home release, and to look forward to new opportunities ahead across Wales and the South West.

James and Georgia served from the same spectacularly finished kitchen you can expect when choosing a home at Beaufort Park, custom Sigma3 MasterClass designs and a suite of Siemens appliances including induction hob, ovens, full-height fridge and freezer and under-counter wine cooler. The layout is open plan with family and dining areas to integrate your guests into entertaining and dining as desired.

There remains much more to discover about the extraordinary scale and finishes of the homes at Beaufort Park and you are invited to view the new “Hatfield” house show home, just launched and now open daily for viewing appointments. Women’s Wellness

Menopause Awareness Month

October is World Menopause Awareness Month and with over 13 million women in the UK being perimenopausal to postmenopausal and an estimated 1.1 billion women globally reaching postmenopause by 2025, there is a significant need to focus on and understand this important stage in women’s lives. Whilst educating girls and women about this transitional phase is vital, boys and men also need to be informed and included in the conversation, now more than ever.

Thanks to experts such as Dr. Annice Mukherjee, Dr. Louise Newson and Dr. Naomi Potter together with celebrities such as Davina McCall and Gwyneth Paltrow, women’s health and specifically, menopause, has recently received media attention and gained an awareness in the public eye not seen before. In fact, if you ask many women currently going through the menopause about their mother’s or grandmother’s experience, phrases like “the change” or “having a funny turn” are briefly mentioned in hushed voices followed quickly by awkward silences. Thankfully, this once taboo subject is slowly moving out of the shadows and being talked about on our screens, at home and in our communities.

But, there is still a way to go. Places of education, work and recreation need to address menopause through learning and information. To normalise what will happen to 51% of the population, to protect and support the fastest growing demographic in the workforce and to celebrate the wisdom and experience of our ageing population.

You may be asking, “What does it mean to be perimenopausal, menopausal or postmenopausal?” Perimenopause means “around menopause” and refers to the time when your body makes the natural transition to menopause and oestrogen levels fluctuate. Women start perimenopause at different ages and for different reasons, but on average, signs and symptoms appear from mid 40’s onwards.

Once a woman has gone through 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, she has officially reached menopause. It is important to state that menopause is a normal phase in life, with the average age of women reaching menopause at 51, but it may occur earlier in some women than in others. A woman is considered postmenopausal after these 12 consecutive months. There are many ways to prepare for this life stage, manage the transition and embrace the years ahead with fullness of life and vitality. Knowledge is power and through learning more and gaining understanding of what is happening at this time, you will feel more in control and can make better decisions. Seek help, support and advice from professionals, family and friends. There is great strength in reaching out and talking about your experiences with others.

Eating a well-balanced diet of whole foods, along with staying hydrated, will support many hormonal changes in the body. As too will movement, which is vital as we age. Movement and exercise are powerful tools in alleviating some of the symptoms and physiological aspects of hormonal change. Looking after your body will reap benefits for your mood, mind and libido too.

Find time to look after yourself as well as your loved ones. Aim to take 5 minutes each day to focus on your breathing. Remember that deep breaths into your belly are best, with a slower exhale. This will help to calm your nervous system and help you to relax. Keep a wellbeing pack of essentials to hand. This could be a scented spray or hand cream, cooling wipes, a fan, water and healthy snacks.

Boost your Vitamin D levels by getting outside as often as possible. Nature is a powerful healer and can provide huge benefits to our health and wellbeing. Aim to use active rest to help you unwind at the end of the day or week. This may be a walk, cleaning your home or pottering in the garden. It’s important to start with small changes and realistic goals to improve your wellbeing habits.

Change one thing at a time, such as drinking more water or moving your body more. Consistency is key - repeating one thing each day will create a habit that will last longer than if you try to change everything at once.

Always seek the advice of a professional such as a GP, before making any health related changes. Ask for help and support, talk to friends and family and include them in the conversation. Menopause is inevitable, but we can choose how we live with this phase of life. Keep learning, reaching out and making wellness and health a priority.

ere’s no better time than Black History Month to reflect on how to achieve inclusion, diversity and belonging in the workplace and beyond. This conversation is ongoing and the work to reach this point is never really done, but it is vital for all members of society to reflect and consider how we can work to become masters of diversity and inclusion. Therefore, there is no better person to enlighten us on this subject than Bernie

A best-selling author, a diversity and entrepreneurship leader, a business mentor to many, she certainly needs no introduction. We were lucky enough to sit down with Bernie and talk all things inclusion and diversity.

Your career to date is extremely impressive! Talk to us about everything you’ve achieved and your journey

“Well, I’m 60 years old so there is a lot of career to share! Originally, my background is in law where I practiced for 21 years. It was my career and my time in Cardiff that led me to understand the qualities needed for entrepreneurship. As my practice grew, I realised that I loved the business side of things. I always inject my personality into my work and this led to doors swinging open for me.

In 2012 when I was at the top of my career, my Mother passed away in Jamaica. I took some time off, but, when you have a purpose, you cannot deny it and mine came knocking. My

husband and I opened a Caribbean restaurant where I was surrounded by people who helped me to heal. After talking to customers for a while, a few asked me to be their coach. I had been feeding these people literally, but I wanted to start feeding their spirit, soul and mindset too.

Then, I wrote my first book – Your Business, Your Way – which became a bestseller. I began running diversity and inclusion workshops for businesses and then wrote my second book –Mastering Diversity. My Mastering Diversity event at City Hall was to encourage the businesspeople of Wales to build and nurture a mindset that will push Wales into an era of profitability. All of the work that I have done is just a piece of the puzzle. Together… that’s where the magic happens.”

You’re an expert in diversity and inclusion, what would you say to businesses who are trying to achieve this?

“Don’t be afraid. A lot of businesses are scared of trying to step in the right direction in case they get it wrong. Think about understanding and learning. Read books, expose yourself to a variety of topics, speak to people in different sectors and from different backgrounds. The purpose of life is not just to be understood, but to understand, which naturally leads to increased diversity and inclusion. The distinction between equity and equality in the workplace is also very important. You cannot achieve equality in the workplace if the people at the top of the business do not support or encourage this change. Equality and inclusion always begins with people at the top.”

Thinking beyond business, how can we become more inclusive as a society?

“Wales is lightyears ahead compared to some places, but there is still work to be done. I think that we need to consider the disabled more, as access in many of the older buildings in Cardiff can be an issue for them. There is also a greater awareness of the LGBTQ+ community now, but a lot of people are still not understanding the importance of accepting them or learning about their struggles. Knowledge is power, so make yourself knowledgeable. How are we meant to change if we do not know?

There is work to be done across the board, not just in business. However, entrepreneurship is the lifeblood for any economy, so we need to make sure that this reflects what we want to see in society. It is important for everyone of all ages, races, sexualities and genders to recognise their own privileges. When you recognise your privileges, you can open your

mind. When you change hearts and minds, you change people, and when you change people, you change what happens.”

Thinking about opening your mind, October is Black History Month. Why is this so important?

“Black History Month gives people who may not have thought about it before an opportunity to open their minds to a different point of view. When white people talk about these issues, the impact is much stronger. By engaging in these conversations and providing a platform for these discussions, we are already celebrating Black History Month.

Many of the speakers at my Mastering Diversity event last month touched on Black History Month and the importance of learning from other people’s experiences. It is all about reciprocity; I want everyone involved in my events to learn something. As I said before, knowledge is power.”

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date?

“I am proud that when my Mother passed away, I didn’t give up. I’m proud of my multicultural family. I’m proud that I have had the opportunity to speak at the UN. I’m proud of my Lifetime Achievement award. I am proud of all of my work; I am only here for a short time, but my work will last forever, so I am running my race to pass the baton on to future generations. But, if I had to choose one thing to highlight, I am most proud that I am able to bring people together to have conversations like this.

My crowning moment of this year is my Mastering Diversity event. People from all across Wales came together in the heart of Cardiff, all in the name of diversity. At this event, one mind with one mission came together to be better – and when you have that, something incredible will happen.”

Progress doesn't come from stillness"

i’m Nicole Ready, a freelance creative based between Cardiff and London. I studied fashion and whilst it is one of the industries I do work in primarily with styling, my work portfolio spans across the arts. This includes costume for film and TV, consultancy and curation in museums, community engagement, and art with children. At the core of all those sectors and mediums, the focus in my work is on education and celebrating the Black experience, heritage, culture and community. My heritage is Bajan and Welsh and both cultures are incredibly important to me. Being a product of the Windrush generation and multiculturalism in Wales plays a huge role in who I am, the work I choose to do and how I do it.

Black History Month has been inconsistent in my life from a young age and with that, the meaning of it has evolved as I’ve grown up and grown into my Blackness. As a child, it meant fun. The lead-up and the month of October were full of dancing, singing, art, performing, education and celebration. Focus on legacy, ancestors and those who paved the way but

explored in a way that never felt like school or a chore, I was just having the best time with my cousins and other Black kids in Butetown.

Understandably, at the time I was naive to how shaping my childhood Black History Months would be on my character and values as an adult. Now as a 24 year old, I chose what I do with the month and what it means to me. I see it as an opportunity. My work, values and Blackness can’t be limited to just one month, but the spotlight brings opportunity for growth, listening, change and celebration. I believe a shift happened in myself and many others during the Black Lives Matter Movement in 2020. We could unapologetically speak our truth as people were finally listening. BHM for me following on from that evolved again as I hope it will continue to, because progress doesn’t come from stillness.

During my time at university, I realised I had the opportunity to create work I really cared about and align with who I am, so I created Docks Magazine. The focus was exploring Black culture in Wales and issue one specifically looked at challenging the perception of Butetown, an incredibly diverse and vibrant area where I spent my formative years. But, my experience of it was misrepresented in mainstream media, and generally, the Black experience is. So I showed the Butetown I know through poetry, photography, styled portraits and interviews. It was of the people and for the people.

When thinking about what has changed the landscape in Cardiff, I believe Unify have truly done that with their murals led by Yusuf Ismail and Shawqi Hassan. They have produced some of the most impactful art in this city. I was very lucky to play a small part in a project of theirs titled My Cymru My Shirt, created in collaboration with Adidas for the Euros. People who represent our Cardiff were photographed wearing the Wales football jersey and I was one of them. Following that, the

32 | Cardiff Life
columnist

hugely talented Bradley Rmer, a local artist, painted a mural of my portrait on Quay Street. The response around it was incredible and gave space for necessary conversation to happen on representation, diversity and art. It is just one of the many Unify murals to do that.

Institutional change is vital when it comes to tackling racism, and having worked with National Museum Wales since 2020 on that, a stand-out project is the Reframing Picton Exhibition. Initiated from one portrait of Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton, the former governor of Trinidad, who was put on trial for torturing a 14-year-old mixed-race girl Luisa Calderon. It explores Wales’ colonial past and links it with the transatlantic enslavement of African people. But, very importantly, it brings Trinidad back into the narrative with artists commissioned to respond. Across three rooms the exhibition is educational, dynamic and healing.

I feel there are two simple things everyone can do to make this city better beyond BHM. My first suggestion is truly embracing what a special place Cardiff is because we are one of the oldest multicultural cities in the UK. Migration is the reason Cardiff looks and feels the way it does today, people from all over the world have contributed to this city for decades and decades. Appreciation and gratitude are key. The second is to check back in. Black Lives Matter opened up people’s eyes, new feelings were felt, difficult conversations were had and a lot of commitments were made. I encourage us to really think about that time. Change is possible within us if we don’t push it to the back of our minds, if we don’t stay complacent, passive and sit in our privilege. So check back in, not only for October.

I have a deep gratitude for the Black women I had as role models from a young age who ensured it was always a fruitful and empowering BHM. My Mum, my Nan, Mrs (Betty) Campbell, Faith Walker, Latifa Charles and Humie Webb, thank you.

The Anthem Gateway is a product of the Youth Forum’s suggestions on how to improve knowledge and community. This is for young people in Wales who love music and want to find out they can get involved, established by young creatives to help build a better understanding of how the music industry works and create a pathway to future careers: whether it's onstage, backstage, back office or in the audience.

Young people can get involved in this community by applying to the annual Anthem Youth Forum, which gives young people a space to explore the music industry and a voice to influence key issues around music and young people in Wales. Anthem are currently looking to expand and grow upwards throughout Wales. In their words, “There is still lots to be done in Wales when considering accessible and fair opportunities in music and it is vital that we continue working towards creating a Wales in which music can empower every young life”.

Jukebox Collective is a youth-led and communityoriented organisation on a mission to build a platform that supports, nurtures and empowers future generations. Jukebox Collective was founded in 2001 by Liara Barussi. Liara has always been dedicated to creating platforms for young creatives to tell their stories, and Jukebox Collective brought this vision to life. What started a grassroots dance company is now a collective completing groundbreaking work to develop structural changes within the wider arts industry. In 2017, Jukebox Collective became the first Black-led company to receive funding by the Arts Council of Wales. From this point onwards, they have only continued to provide platforms for diverse talents, amplifying underrepresented voices and encouraging individuals to control their own narratives. The work that Jukebox Collective is doing ensures that the individuals and communities of modern Wales have access to transformative experiences, breaking down many of the systemic barriers that exist within the arts industry.

Equal opportunity is a core value of the Jukebox Collective, which is what led to their development of the Jukebox Academy. The Academy is a space dedicated to students, allowing them to unlock their potential as part of a three-year artistic development programme. With sessions ranging from Hip Hop to music and multimedia, to film-making and Contemporary dance, the multidisciplinary classes on offer at Jukebox Academy prepare students for a collaborative and creative career in the arts.

In 2022, Jukebox Collective partnered up with Lab7 to launch their music academy. These programmes touch on every element of musical production, from beat-making right the way through to recording. The sessions and insight afforded to students through the Jukebox Collective’s Academy ensures that they are equipped with the vital skills needed to breakthrough in the arts industry.

The work of Jukebox Collective does not just strive to revolutionise the arts industry, but also the lives of those involved with the organisation. For many of the people in the Jukebox Collective’s network, discrimination, inequality and injustice is an everyday lived experience. This is why Jukebox Collective pride themselves on the work that they are doing to actively remove social, economic and geographic barriers and fight systemic issues. By putting in this work now, and nurturing today’s creative minds, Jukebox Collective are hoping that the next generation will be able to reap the benefits of a more equal and equitable future.

AUBERGINE CAFE

Aubergine Café was founded by Selena Caemawr after an injury to their head left them thinking they would never work again. Despite working in many different roles throughout their working life, they struggled in certain areas, such as timesheets, a common autistic and ADHD trait. Their café is the product of their frustration with the lack of support for neurodivergent people in the workplace.

Aubergine café isn’t just a place to eat, it’s a vital safe space and cultural touchstone for many multiply-marginalised autistic people in Cardiff and some even further afield; LGBTQ+ autistic people, disabled and chronically ill autistic people. They host a variety of community events, such as relaxed arts and crafts evenings, open mic nights for music and poetry and free workshops run by neurodivergent artists, providing a muchneeded social space for autistic folk who are more likely to be socially isolated. The café encourages their visitors, including their autistic staff and volunteers, to make the space their own with their art and music, joy and creativity. “Some of them even call it a home away from home, which is really heartwarming to hear”, Selena tells us.

Aubergine Café is designed to keep noise and stress to a minimum with their extra quiet coffee machines, milk frothers and fridges. Selena said that by “removing common barriers

like these, it is surprisingly simple to create an environment where autistic people can thrive and be unapologetically and authentically themselves.” The café employs and trains autistic and neurodivergent people who are less likely than any other demographic to be in employment. They offer a social hub for autistic people who may otherwise be socially isolated.

When speaking with Selena, they told us that “autistic people are systematically excluded from the job market”. By employing and training autistic people and paying them a living wage, Aubergine Café empowers them to survive and thrive in a system that “was not built for them”. With Aubergine, they gain skills, confidence and an invaluable support network.

After a stint at Cardiff University studying Illustration, Elliot and Kay, founders of ArtHole, quickly became disillusioned with the hustle of nailing down freelance work and competing with fellow artists for spaces at markets, so decided to set up on their own. Looking to create an environment that placed less of an emphasis on making money and more of a focus on bringing together like-minded illustrators, celebrating a craft that often feels a bit overlooked, ArtHole was born.

ArtHole is an illustration driven retail space and community hub in Cardiff’s Castle Arcade, specialising in illustrated and printed goods from both local and emerging creatives. Think tote bags, clothing, ceramics and “nice things”. The duo are on a mission to support Cardiff’s illustration community, giving them an enhanced platform in the early stages of their career and helping them to build sustainable careers. ArtHole is an authentic reflection of both Elliot and Kay and they take great pride in the fact that they do everything in-house. Their greatest privilege is bringing “fellow creatives along on the journey with them”, they told us.

ArtHole is a registered CIC (community interest company), meaning that any and all profits generated by themselves will be reinvested into the business itself and the wider illustration community. In the near future, their submission-based magazine to help showcase emerging illustrators and writers is due to make an exciting comeback. So, if you’re not local to the city centre but still want to get involved, their mag may just be your answer. The pair also have plans to collaborate with some local small-press businesses to bring the people of Cardiff another market before the end of the year, so keep your eyes peeled!

PROVING THAT NEUTRAL IS BEAUTIFUL!

38 | Cardiff Life advertorial

By a country mile neutral is the most requested colour scheme by our clients. Neutral simply means pale grey, cream, or beige. Think classic shades of warm whites and ivories for Instagram-inspired home décor, and imagine stone tiles in creams and beiges for homely finishes.

Grey tones have transitioned from cooler blue greys into greige tones in recent years, creating a warmer grey hue which is more inviting and cosy than a steely grey room that can be a bit colder on the eye and senses.

A neutral bathroom is a wise move if you plan to sell your home in the near future. The shades that make up a neutral palette are always timeless and will look clean and fresh for years to come. It’s no secret that new, modern bathrooms and kitchens can add value to your home and make the resale of your property easier and swifter. There have been many studies on this and the stats prove that this commonly used phrase is one to take note of if you are currently renovating or updating your property.

If you plan to move in three to five years then you should definitely consider resale with your choices, our tip would be to keep it neutral and simple. If you are staying for up to 10 years then resale still needs to be considered, but you should add in personal touches and elements for you to enjoy for the duration you will be at the house. Touches that you can enjoy but that still add value are things like under-tile heating, bathroom tech and ambient lighting. If you plan to stay in your home for 10 years plus, you need to opt for higher-end products so they stand the test of time.

You will use your brassware every day, so allocate a good portion of your budget to a really good shower set, don’t cut corners when it comes to your budget as, for 10 years or more, you will get a lot of use out of your space, and with the right input from the outset the room should still look fantastic when you come to upsize or downsize in the future.

Commit fully to a neutral scheme with a powder-coated colour-matched radiator, a coloured vanity in a neutral tone, and consider brushed nickel, white or stainless steel brassware rather than chrome as they all tone in with neutral tiling and offer something different to the norm.

Add contrast to a neutral room with a touch of a dark colour, maybe in the screen frame, the mirror trim, or accessories.

If you are embarking on a bathroom, ensuite or cloakroom project The Tap End can assist you in deciding on the best layout for your brief and how you use the room, help you spread your budget across the products so you have good quality throughout, show you interesting features and technology for the space, and of course create a colour scheme and tile choices that are both timeless and stunning.

For more information search The Tap End on social media or visit our website.

We have a Pontyclun based show room open to clinets for browsing and consultations, open Monday – Saturday (closed Sunday).

BRIDGING CONTINENTS IN THE CLASSROOM

Revolutionary Global Classroom connects local Sixth Form students with peers in Singapore and Sydney

Nestled in the heart of Penarth, Westbourne offers the world’s first truly global network of leading IB schools. A visionary approach sees students collaborate across continents, working together to solve problems and global issues using cutting-edge real-time technology.

Leading the global education frontier

For almost 130 years, Westbourne has led the UK education landscape, ranked 1st in the UK for 5 consecutive years (Daily Telegraph), and voted No.1 IB Sixth Form. In 2023, the school was honoured with the Global EdTech Award for its worldleading use of technology, and Head of School, Miss Joanne Chinnock, was named Finalist for Headteacher of the Year alongside only five other heads.

With the opening of sister schools Westbourne College Sydney, ranked 1st in Australia with its first graduating class and, in August, Westbourne College Singapore - the school is taking the education world by storm.

Global opportunities, personal attention

Our focus is undoubtedly global”, said Miss Chinnock, herself a Westbourne parent, “but we retain the nurturing, small school

support mechanisms for which we are so well known - the smaller class sizes, one-to-one attention from staff, and a highly rewarding mentorship programme ensuring our students reach the top universities globally.” Students progress to elite Russell Group and Ivy League universities, with a 90% graduate entry rate.

The IB Advantage

Westbourne’s trump card, the IB Diploma, is proudly offered as an alternative to the traditional A Level. The gold standard in Sixth Form education, IB students benefit from a broader range of subjects, complemented by an enriching inner core comprising the Theory of Knowledge, community projects, and the writing of a university-style essay.

“Westbourne was a life-changing experience for me”, said IB student Munachimso. “It showed me a new approach to life and independence as a person.”

Gevin, who now studies at elite French university Sciences Po, agreed, saying, “My two years at Westbourne were amazing. What I enjoyed most about the IB was writing my Extended Essay, because it enhanced my university research skills and prepared me for the future.”

October Half Term

October half term is all about spending time with your family, but what activities can you get stuck into without breaking the bank and relying heavily on dry weather? If you’re racking your brain for things to do, we’ve rounded up a few pastimes to keep the whole family entertained!

Meal Kits Matsudai ramen

Fancy trying a new cuisine from the comfort of your own home? Matsudai

offers you the chance to try ramen, the famous Japanese adaption of Chinese noodle soup, seated at your very own dining table. Matsudai provides meal kits that are so quick and easy to follow that even your little ones can get involved. The only difficult decision of the evening will be picking out a movie that everyone agrees on! Cooking ramen at home from scratch can take a lot of time. Matsudai simplifies the process for you, “taking the hard work out of it so you get to enjoy the delicious bit at the end”, James Chant, founder of Matsudai, notes. Scan the QR code of your kit and follow simple step-bystep instructions. By the time your ramen is warmed through, your family will still be arguing over what film to watch, so it’s probably best to stick on a Disney classic for the hundredth time!

Green Door Bakery

To keep parents and children alike busy this October half term, Rhian Jones, owner of Green Door Bakery, has shared her delicious cookie secrets. Get your aprons and whisks at the ready!

To make a batch of 10 cookies, you’ll need:

• 100g light brown sugar

• 75g caster sugar

• 125g unsalted butter (melted)

• 1 whole egg

• 300g plain flour

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• Chocolate chips (or desired filling)

Method:

1. Add your butter and sugars to a bowl and mix until creamy

2. Add your egg in and mix again!

3. Add in the plain flour and baking powder until a dough is formed

4. Add your chocolate chips and beat until distributed well

5. Weigh your mixture and split into equal dough balls

6. Leave to chill for 30 mins whilst preheating your oven to 175° 7. Pop the dough on a lined baking tray and bake for 16 minutes

8. Leave to cool and enjoy!

If you happen to come down with a severe case of cabin fever this half term and want to nibble on some sweet treats that you haven’t had to bake, head down to Green Door Bakery in Cyncoed Village.

To keep up with the latest bakes: @greendoor_bakery

While you’re enjoying your meal, James recommends pairing it with “a nice cold glass of beer or a great cocktail.” You don’t have to tell us twice! Perhaps your little ones could even make their very own mocktails. You’re spoilt for choice by Matsudai, as they have eleven different kits with the option to customise each one, shaping it into your perfect ramen. With so many choices, it can be hard to pick but fear not, James divulged his favourites; the rich ‘Sapporo Miso’ packed with umami and the ‘Signature Shoyu’, which is loosely based on the new wave Tokyo style. Other bestsellers are ‘Classic Tonkotsu’ and ‘Sunset Red Tonkotsu’ which are both “super rich and decadent”.

Sounds great, right? We think so too. To ensure you’re fully prepared for a night in with the family, order your ramen kits a week or more in advance to avoid disappointment.

Upcycling

Out of the many things your little ones could get stuck into this October half term, why not let them play fashion designer by upcycling clothes? It’s a perfect way to spark some sustainable creativity as well as keep them busy for the day. There has been a resurgence of sustainable and affordable shopping. Whether it be thrift shopping, upcycling pre-loved clothes or paying more for sustainable clothing, we’re here for it!

The Thrift is “an independent, Cardiff-born business that offers a sustainable and affordable alternative to fast fashion and expensive brands”. With their warehouse split into multiple sections, the shop is easy to navigate. You can easily find anything from well-known designers to pre-loved kid’s clothes. The Thrift also holds a £10 kilo sale seven days a week. The endless options of clothes and bargains make for a perfect place to go on a shopping spree.

Make your way down to Splott, the home of ‘The Thrift’, set your budget and you’re good to go. Be on the lookout for some clothing that looks like it needs some bejewelling or jazzing up, then head home to set up for a day of creativity. To start any upcycling project, you’ll mostly need to start with basic mending, whether it’s adding a patch over a hole or sewing together a hole in a seam. Next, it’s time to look for inspiration. Ask your kids what vibe they’re going for, or maybe show them a few Pinterest pictures to prompt their imagination. Bring out some iron-on patches, fabric dye and some jewels, buttons or lace that you can glue on and you’re good to go. With these accessories, there’s no need to be an expert in fashion or design, just stick wherever feels right. You’re now the proud owner of a completely unique item of clothing.

Not only is upcycling clothes fun, but it also reduces the amount of discarded materials heading towards the landfill. TikTok is flooded with people choosing to upcycle their clothes, however, it’s not only individuals that are hopping on the trend, big names in luxury fashion have started upcycling, like Miu Miu. So, who knows, maybe your little one will be the next Donatella Versace.

CHOOSE TASTE NOT WASTE THIS HALLOWEEN

After every Halloween, around 14 million edible pumpkins end up in the bin in the UK - and that’s partly because most supermarket pumpkins are chosen for their size and shape, not their flavour or nutritional value.

For a more sustainable Halloween, you can make an effort to eat at least some of your pumpkin leftovers. I’ve shared some simple recipes for roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin soup and pumpkin puree hummus on my sustainable food blog, hungrycityhippy.co.uk.

Even better again, you could simply choose a squash or a pumpkin that has been grown for flavour instead of appearance; here Owen Morgan from the 44 Group has shared some of his top tips on the best squash varieties to look out for.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PUMPKIN Owen Morgan, Director at the 44 Group

“Nowadays, there is such a wide variety of edible Autumn pumpkin and squashes, so at the start of the season we always ask for as many different types to come into both Asador 44 and Bar 44 as possible; this is so that our team can get to know about best uses and properties of each. Pumpkins vary hugely in water content, density and natural sweetness – and not just in shape and size!

Crown Prince Squashes, for example, are big and fairly uniformly round (so very easy to work with) but they also provide a wonderfully nutty flavour and firm texture. They grill so well on the fire at Asador 44, or we wedge and roast them in Bar 44 (see below for an example).

Acorn Squashes are much smaller but can be excellent baked whole and scooped out; whilst the Delicta Squash is a big favourite and has quite a thin skin - so you don’t necessarily need to peel it. It’s also really sweet and makes an incredible purée, which you can use for so many things - sweet or savoury. Though not really seen at Halloween, everyone knows the Butternut Squash and these are just so versatile. We often make sweet tarts using butternut squash, but they are just as delicious when used in a slow-cooked braise.”

TRY IT AT HOME: BAR 44's ROAST PUMPKIN WITH CRISPY KALE, CHESTNUT & SAGE PESTO

INGREDIENTS

• 1-1.5kg pumpkin or squash

• Light olive oil for roasting

• 200g Cavolo Nero or kale

• Sea salt

FOR THE PESTO

• 100g cooked chestnuts

• 2 garlic cloves, chopped

• 15 sage leaves

• Large handful of

• flat-leaf parsley

• Large handful of rocket

• 50ml extra virgin olive oil

• 7Sml light olive oil

• Juice of ½ lemon

• 50g cured Manchego or

• aged Parmesan

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/200° Fan/Gas mark 7.

2. Peel the pumpkin or squash, cut in half lengthways, then scoop out and discard the seeds. Cut the flesh into chunky wedges, about 10-12 cm long and place in a large bowl. Add some olive oil and 2 large pinches of sea salt and toss well to coat. Transfer to a roasting tray and place in the oven for 40 minutes, turning once, until caramelised and softened.

3. Tear or slice the kale leaves off the main stalks, keeping the pieces quite big. Place in a large bowl, add some light olive oil and a good pinch of sea salt and toss well to coat. Transfer to another roasting tray and place in the oven for 10 minutes or so, until crisp and drying out. Set aside to drain on kitchen paper.

4. To make the pesto, place all the ingredients for it (except the cheese) in a food processor or blender and blitz to a slightly coarse purée. 5. Transfer it to a bowl, stir in the cheese and season to taste. 6. Serve the roast pumpkin or squash with the pesto spooned over generously and pieces of the crispy kale alongside.

Bronwen's W;sh Sunflower Ball

Bronwen’s W;sh is a charity dedicated to providing safe places within educational settings for children and young people. Saturday 2nd September saw their third annual Sunflower Ball, their biggest fundraiser to date. Amy David and Katy Spurrier, friends of Bronwen Morgan who they sadly lost to suicide, were behind the idea so that everyone could celebrate Bronwen’s life and raise as much as possible in the process. Their total for the evening was just over £14k, which will be going towards the development of their second well-being pod, located at Rhydypenau Primary School in Cardiff. The well-being pods are a sanctuary for young people experiencing emotional difficulties, anxieties and other challenges. Cardiff Life | 55 Autumn Interiors
Styles Spruce up Your Space This Autumn
Elizabeth

Forget summer, let’s skip straight to the good stuff! Welsh interior designer Elizabeth Styles reveals all when it comes to creating a home this autumn that’s sustainable, cosy, and of most of all; to your style. Let’s be honest, we can say goodbye to our summer outdoor cushions and say ‘oh, hello’ to scented candles and cosy cushions. At Elizabeth Styles, we’ve been planning our autumnal changeover for a while now and can’t wait to share with you our mood-boosting seasonal tips.

We’re heading towards a trend that’s being inspired by the 70’s. Don’t worry, relax, it’s not the 70’s that’s plastered in colour with extreme pattern… that can stay where it belongs, in Grandma’s house! We are inspired by the cosy living, low slung comfort and sculptural curves and okay, the occasional 70’s floral pattern. A pop of colour and embellishment can add so much joy. You should try it, in moderation.

I don’t really believe in designing to trends as wall coverings, beautifully made furniture and art are far too expensive to see them as a flash in the pan moment. As we become more environmentally aware, out goes the need for fast furniture and appreciation for vintage returns. I always say to clients when designing a room, you need to learn to live with it for a long time. So, I hear you… how do you step into the season and switch up your home for autumn/winter?

Who said brown was boring?

Browns are current and are predicted to stick around for a long time. They also make for the perfect addition when adding warmth to a room. Walnut, beech, mahogany and acacia are all woods that will create a warm undertone for that sense of grounding, creating a calm environment to help us feel more connected to nature. A coffee table, the occasional chair or a wooden sculptural object are perfect pieces to start with.

property 56 | Cardiff Life

Comfort at your feet

If you’ve taken your rug away for that summer indoor/outdoor feel, it’s now time to get it back out and layer up. Rugs can be fun and offer that pop of colour, pattern, and comfort. A top tip from me is to try and fit all your furniture onto your rug… that’s all 4 feet of your sofa included! Go as large as the space can handle. Carpet is making a comeback, so a large rug can create this look without too much maintenance or cost.

Moody Sundays

Set aside a Sunday to create a mood board of all things that make you happy in your home. It’s easy to do, fun and it will act as a guide to encourage flow throughout your home. Here’s one I’ve created for our home this season, with a few autumnal changes that will complement our current furniture and add warmth, not overwhelm. The key is flow and consistently. “If you find something you love, make space for it.”

The Human Touch

Autumn 2023 will see us turning to second hand, vintage pieces that are steeping in history and some of the best craftsmanship. When it comes to mixing vintage pieces with a modern decor, almost anything goes. I always think of the 60-30-10 rule. 60% of your home needs to be a solid, grounded and accomplished style and 30% is your secondary colour, pattern, textured fabrics and wallpapers to support that style. With the remaining 10%, you can have fun and mix it up. Use your 10% wisely; a single statement piece of furniture, like a great vintage chair, a pair of carvers at a dining table, a distressed sideboard, or a large antique rug. How about planning a day to Cardiff Indoor Flea Market to see what you can find? If second hand isn’t your thing, you can create a similar look by investing in new pieces inspired by key periods of design. If you ever want to switch up your style, look to upcycle them!

Coco is a Cardiff-born mental health activist and influencer on a mission to uplift people and help them to better understand their own mental health. Their brand, Talk to Coco, began when Coco took to Instagram and documented how they were feeling during a down-day. The response was incredible and now Coco’s posts have become cornerstones in many people’s own mental health journeys. As a Black, queer, non-binary and neurodivergent person, Coco draws upon their own experiences to help others feel seen, heard and supported.

We had the privilege of talking to Coco about their journey, brand image and achievements to date.

Since October is Black History Month, can you tell us a bit about growing up Black, queer, non-binary and neurodivergent?

“Growing up Black and Welsh was difficult, especially in the 90s. I wasn’t Welsh enough to certain people, and others saw me as too Black to fit in, even though I’m mixed race. However, I was a resilient kid, brought up to know that being Black is beautiful, so I’m proud of my complexion – from my skin tone to my Afro hair. So, I never allowed what society was telling me to get me down, I used it to my advantage. I found so much joy through being a person of colour – the communities, the people, the music, and the food brought thousands of strangers together to celebrate who we are.”

Being neurodivergent was difficult. I was seen as not enough, perceived to be someone who is clever but can’t concentrate or sit still. But, I knew I had greatness in my heart and soul, so I was wearing my differences as my super power. This kept me going during the times of judgement.

I came out at 14 years old and, thanks to my loving and supportive family, I thrived. I could finally be my authentic self and stand in my skin proudly. Even now, at almost 31 years old, I’m lucky to have the real ones around, embracing all of my Black, queer, creative, neurodivergent self.”

Tell us about Talk to Coco?

“Talk to Coco was born when I was feeling like I wasn’t enough. I wanted to be there for people who felt like they didn’t have anyone to turn to, so one day I went live on Instagram and shared how I was feeling on one of my down days. The response was overwhelming. People from all over the world had seen my content and were so grateful for my openness about things that people shy away from talking about. From there, I began speaking to people and discovering ways to conquer what we were feeling in a creative way.

many heartwarming messages from people of all ages, races and religions. This has led me to many opportunities: like speaking at events and panels, partnering with amazing brands and has also allowed me to become a face and voice for so many people.”

What is your biggest achievement to date?

“I guess my biggest achievement to date would be becoming a Mother; our son is everything and he is the reason that I continue to strive, love myself and creatively grow in all of my disciplines as an artist. Seeing my work on billboards all around the UK and New York was also an incredible achievement.”

What advice would you give to someone else who feels like they want to break into an industry that is currently underrepresented?

“You should always be your true and authentic self; that way, you begin to thrive. There are so many stigmas and stereotypes around everything that I am, so I always say honesty and transparency makes you vulnerable, so be honest and transparent anyway.

I knew I had to make a change and that is why Talk to Coco is so imperative to so many people. For many people, my workshops, talks and artistry are a safe haven where you can be yourself without feeling judged.”

Tariq Howes is an award-winning male hairstylist, particularly renowned for his work on Afro hair. With over fifteen years of experience, Tariq has paved his way in the industry, achieving insurmountable successes and accolades along the way. His innovative and groundbreaking work is also largely inspired by who he is as a person; with his mixed background encouraging him to diversify and work on styling all hair types and textures. We were lucky enough to talk to Tariq about his upbringing, his career, and his successes, discovering how he made it to where he is today.

Since October is Black History Month, can you tell us what it was like to grow up with a mixed background of Welsh, Somali, Egyptian, and Jamaican?

“My heritage has always been quite a complex thing for me. When I was growing up, there was a period of time where I didn’t really know much about my heritage. I remember my Mother telling me that my Nan was Egyptian, and that my Grandfather was Black, which surprised me. I didn’t know my Father for a while and when I eventually met him, I discovered that he is half Black, half Arab. My Father then educated me on my heritage and family history, which is quite unique, even today. Although, I think people forget that Cardiff does have one of the oldest migrations of Black and brown people in the UK because of events like the coal trade.

With my Mother being white Welsh and my Father’s mix, I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t necessarily look Somali or Jamaican. So, to make things easier to explain, I used to tell people that I was just Arab. However, as I grew older I began to think: why am I leaving out this massive part of who I am? It is who I am at the end of the day.”

What led you to kick-start your super successful career in barbering?

“When I left school, I spent the whole summer hanging out with my mates, or staying up late on MSN. Until, one morning I remember my Mum coming into my room. She had a serious face on and said that, instead of sitting around doing nothing, I needed to get a job now that I had left school. So, I went down to the local job centre and saw an advertisement for an apprentice at a barbershop. When I was young, I used to spend a lot of time in barbershops having my own hair done and I got the impression that it would be an easy, sociable job. Boy, was I wrong! But that apprentice job changed my life forever. I fell in love with the trade, and I’ve never looked back since.”

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date?

“Well, I’d say my two beautiful kids, Khalil and Jaykub. But, if we’re talking about career highlights, I’d probably say that signing for the major electrical brand Babyliss is one of my biggest achievements to date. To have a company of that level notice me and want me to be a part of what they are doing, is a crazy feeling. Also, the work I’ve done for Zara, and the amazing brands like Dolce and Gabbana and Fred Perry, have been massive achievements in my career so far.”

Do you have a favourite person, or brand, that you have worked with?

“My favourite people to work with are my mentor, Jody Taylor, who is a boss in men’s hair! Also, my team at Avenue Male Grooming, Marvin, Jaiden and Reuben. They are like family to me.”

Over the years, Wales has become a force to be reckoned with in the medical field and this year, the boundaries have been pushed even further. From allowing patients to have more choice and agency, to ensuring that the ability to access the medical profession is an option for everyone, countless organisations in Wales have been working tirelessly to revolutionise the medical field. Here are some of the trailblazing organisations working to improve medicine and healthcare in Wales.

Frontier Medical

Frontier Medical Group have recently announced plans for a new innovation hub at Cardiff Medicentre. Frontier Medical Group is a medical technology company, committed to developing and bringing to market, medical devices that help to aid pressure area care. As one of the world’s leading medical companies, their products are clinically evaluated to ensure that maximum support is offered to patients. All of their products are available on the NHS supply chain and used in hospitals, care homes, and by at-home patients. In the last twelve months, Frontier Medical Group has gone from strength to strength, making key changes to existing products. For instance, over the last year, Frontier have made changes to their Repose® cushions, resulting in a 25% reduction in scrap material, and a 10% increased efficiency in the overall production process.

As well as implementing innovative changes to pre-existing products, Frontier Medical Group have also announced some extremely exciting plans for the future. They have secured a space in Cardiff Medicentre to open an innovation hub. This will allow them to connect with professionals in academia, healthcare and engineering to develop further solutions to healthcare challenges. The innovation hub will be set in the grounds of Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales, cementing the medicentre as a joint venture between Cardiff University and the Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. Frontier Medical Group said that they have “always worked closely with Welsh universities, so this endeavour will allow us to continue to tap into Cardiff’s talent” to assure that patients will have access to innovative and quality products.

Frontier Medical Group has big plans for how the innovation hub will be used in Cardiff, and the focus is largely on benefiting patients. This new development will allow Frontier Medical Group to supply directly to patients. This means that patients at risk from developing sores and ulcers will be given an opportunity to choose the level of care that is right for them from the comfort of their own home.

Additionally, this new innovation hub marks a significant step for the healthcare, engineering and academic industries in Cardiff and surrounding areas. Frontier Medical group said that their new venture “places innovation at the heart of biotech and medtech business with the best resources, facilities and knowledge. We’re excited to see the positive impact this has on enhancing the future of healthcare and life sciences”.

The innovation hub is expected to be operational later this year.

the hope hospital

Cardiff University’s School of Medicine have teamed up with the Welsh Government’s Seren Programme to allow young Welsh learners the chance to experience what becoming a medical student is all about.

Seren is an initiative by the Welsh Government which sets out to help Wales’ most able state-educated learners achieve their full potential. Their recent collaboration with Cardiff University has allowed aspiring medics a hands-on insight into what studying medicine will involve. The Hope Hospital summer school ran for two days and aimed to encourage young Welsh learners to pursue a career in medicine. On top of this, it was free of charge, making this an accessible experience for all aspiring medics – no matter their background.

The summer school brought 53 year 12 students from all across Wales into The Hope Hospital, where they participated in Case Based Learning and Communication Skills workshops, based on the teaching given to early year medical university students. For example, in The Hope Hospital, actors presented students with various symptoms, giving the young learners a chance to assess and treat their ‘patients’. The Hope Hospital was also supported by current university students and Clinical Skills staff, giving these year 12 students a hands-on experience and important insight into both university life and the wider medical field.

Dr Naomi Stanton, a GP and Senior Clinical Lecturer at Cardiff University said, “‘The pandemic has meant several years of remote learning for learners, so this type of immersive experience is invaluable. It is vitally important for the future healthcare workforce of Wales that we encourage and support young people’s aspirations for careers in healthcare”.

Jeremy Miles, the Minister for Education and Welsh Language, echoes this point, adding that The Hope Hospital summer school is “a great example of how our Seren programme can work in collaboration with leading Welsh universities to provide a free of charge experience to help nurture the next generation of medics”.

The Hope Hospital was a great success and a necessary investment into the future of Wales’ healthcare industries.

Coleg Gwent

Coleg Gwent, a further education college based in Newport, has recently announced that they will be offering an Access to Medicine course. The first of its kind in Wales, this groundbreaking opportunity will tackle the pervasive issues surrounding inclusion and equality that exist when trying to begin a career in the medical field.

Coleg Gwent have collaborated with Agored Cymru and Professor Paul Edwards to create and launch the course, which will afford students from disadvantaged backgrounds an opportunity to study an Access to Medicine course. The intensive course is a one-year study route which, upon completion, will set students up with an equivalent of three grade As in science – the traditional acceptance offer to study medicine at degree level. This course targets students who may have missed the chance to study medicine due to personal barriers, preparing them for a Medical Pathway Degree whilst also building their self-confidence.

Professor Paul Edwards is a Consultant Surgeon and Assistant Medical Director for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. His own experiences of social deprivation and low self-esteem have cemented this course as something that he feels extremely passionate about, as he has witnessed the struggles that surround entering the medical profession first-hand. Paul said, “when I was 18, I struggled with confidence, and I didn’t think I was good enough. Growing up in a small Welsh town, I’d always thought a medical degree was out of my reach. But, in 1991, I started my medical degree at Southampton medical school and quickly became top of the class”.

Professor Edwards did not let his self-doubt stop him from pursuing his dream and he is hoping that this Access to Medicine course will instil a similar sense of hope in Wales’ current aspiring medics. Paul decided to team up with Coleg Gwent to “challenge the stereotypical system that without academic excellence measured by A Level grades, you can’t enter the medical profession”. He believes that “there is a huge amount of underused talent in Wales”, which will be uncovered by this accessible route into medicine.

Coleg Gwent have also teamed up with Agored Cymru to deliver the course. Based in Cardiff and Bangor, Agored Cymru is an awarding body that develops bespoke accreditations and services for education and training providers in Wales. Having Agored Cymru on board cements this course as a recognised accreditation, helping Coleg Gwent to revolutionise how we can enter the medical profession.
