Kokos har bursdag

Karsten og Petra kler seg ut

Today Cocos turns three years old and his friends want to surprise him. They think he deserves a proper birthday party. Lion Cub, Mrs Rabbit and Bassa go out into the forest to pick blueberries for making pancakes.

There's going to be a carnival at nursery. Petra goes home with Karsten so they can help each other find something to dress up as. They look in Mummy's wardrobe. In there are lots of strange things. 'We can't both go as la-di-da ladies, can we?' asks Karsten.

Cocos Birthday

Cocos can't understand where all his friends have gone. Especially on his birthday. He waits and waits. Surely they can't have forgotten him? But suddenly the door to his house opens, and there they are, each one of them, with blueberries and pancake mix.

Nilsen and the Crabs Nilsen og krabbene Nilsen and Dina are with their dad on the beach. They go swimming and fish for crabs, and Nilsen would really like to stroke the sweet crabs. But this is not such a good idea, because crabs nip hard, and Nilsen suddenly falls into the water. Luckily he is wearing his life vest, so Dad can fish him out – just like a crab! Nilsen og krabbene is the fifth book about little Nilsen and his big sister, Dina. A sweet, charming and recognisable series for young children. Two of the previous books about Nilsen have been sold to Denmark.

Emilie lager en katt

Blue is reading a book in the shade under the parasol, and the cat is busy basking in the sunlight. It's a warm summer day at the beach, and Iver is feeling impatient. He decides to take the boat out by himself. Iver navigates as well as he can, but he begins to drift into strange waters, and toward new challenges.

The first book about Emilie and her little brother Max, Emilie selger en gutt, came out in the autumn of 2011. Luckily, little brother Max turned up again after Emilie had sold him to someone she thought was an old lady, but was only Dad dressing up. And a good thing too, because it means Emilie can still play with her little brother!

Iver’s Journey

The ocean is great and Iver is curious. He discovers a world he does not recognize. The waves have a will and a life of their own, and Iver gets dizzy trying to stay on course. He longs to be at home with good friends, but first he has to find his way back.

Ine and Hasse are sister and brother. Ine is the older one and can fix everything. Hasse doesn't say much, only ‘yes’ or ‘tractor’. They are going to cut down a tree in the forest and Ine carries the axe, of course. Soon, all the forest animals turn up to find out what's going on.

Mimmi and Mattis are best friends. Mimmi lives on stairway A and Mattis on stairway B. They go to the same nursery school. And every day they play in the sandpit. They build towns with roads and houses. (Mimmi is the mayor, Mattis works at the petrol station.) But then Astrid moves in and ruins everything! What Mimmi needs now is a plan to win back Mattis.

Hallo der nede!

Her kommer jeg!

Hallo der nede! is modelled on the same principle as the other Hallo books by Anna Fiske. Previously, we have been able to follow life on Earth, in the city and on another planet. Now we find out what happens underground. We follow six insects for sixteen months, and readers themselves can also find and see other things changing from one month to the next.

A picture book that shows that adventure can be just around the corner if you take the time to look around you!

Hello Down There!

A lot of exciting things happen underground. Caves, swimming pools and banqueting halls are built. Creepy-crawlies work and party, celebrating Christmas, Easter, Midsummer and Halloween. The book starts in July and finishes in November of the following year. Hallo der nede! is a treasure chest for anyone who likes to search and find and to immerse themselves in lots of small funny details.

Anna Fiske (1964–) studied graphic design and illustration at Ölands Målarskola, and

Konstfackskolan in Stockholm. Since 1992, she has worked as an illustrator of comic books, children's picture books and children's magazines.

▶ BACK LIST

Here I Come!

Leif throws himself into an adventure and looks after all the things that he finds on the way, just like the Ash lad in folk tales. He uses those things to make his way further along on his exploration. He finds the skipping rope perfect for tying around the shark's mouth, whilst the fish get bread and the lion gets fish. In the end, Leif finds a teddy bear and hurries back the way he came. He falls asleep in his bed – the whole adventure took place in his own back garden!

To blå hus

Mummy and the little girl are in a hurry. Mummy hops hastily onto the bus, but the girl is left behind. What should she do? Then the fox from her jumper leaps out, and together they make their way through town, trying to find the nursery school.

To blå hus is a very original picture book. Two blue houses live in the far north at the foot of a mountain. They are neighbours and good friends, and one of the houses often repeats what the other one says, just like good friends do. Sometimes the houses have visitors. Early one morning, nine socks come walking past.

‘Where are you going?’ says one house. ‘Yes, where are you going?’ says the other. ‘We are going to have a sixty metre race with some woollen socks from the neighbouring village,’ answers one of the socks. The houses are asked if they would like to come along, but they politely turn down the offer. Not long afterwards, they are visited by eight balloons, a little later by two old chairs and so it goes on throughout the story. And what the guests get up to is completely unbelievable. This text is bubbling with imagination and joyful storytelling, and readers can delight in all the unexpected things that happen. The book can be readily used as a counting book too, but the numbers do not come in sequence and there is no strict order as we are used to seeing in such books.

Rut Teian (1986–) is educated as a teacher in arts and crafts. She makes her début as a children’s book author in 2012. Ella K. Garmanns hemmelighet

Garmanns sommer

Garmann thinks about the twins, Hanne and Johanne, how similar they are and yet so different. Hanne is nasty and teases the others. Johanne is nice and exciting to be with. She tells Garmann about a secret place that only the two of them share, a secret forest hideaway that they play in together. They draw with their fingers on each other's backs, and Johanne confides that she sleeps with the light on. For a moment, time stands still. With sensitivity, Stian Hole portrays first love.

Summer is nearly over and Garmann is going to start school. Garmann is dreading it, and he tries to find out if adults dread doing things, too, while he's seeing if he's got a loose tooth. Garmann thinks about life and death, the present and the future. «What do you want to be when you grow up?» Aunt Augusta whispers to him. «A sword-swallower,» Garmann answers.

Garmanns hemmelighet is the third book about Garmann. For the first, Garmanns sommer, Stian Hole was awarded the Brage Prize, and was the first Nordic author ever to receive the prestigious BolognaRagazzi Award in 2007. In 2009 Garmanns sommer received the Mildred L. Batchelder Award, announced by the Amercian Library Association. It also won the French Prix Sorciere for best album of the year 2008. The second, Garmanns gate, was awarded the Nordic Association of School Librarians Children's Literature prize in 2009. Garmann's Street Garmanns gate The first book about Garmann, Garmanns Sommer, won both hearts and awards, such as the BolognaRagazzi Award, the first book from the Nordic countries to do so. Garmann has now started at school and the world seems even more unsafe. ‘Are you a wimp? Light it!' says the horrible Rolf to Garmann. The grass fire at the stamp man's house is put out and Garmann realises that friendships are made when you least expect it. Beautifully illustrated using the same techniques as in Garmann's Summer.

‘A work of art in itself. … Now [Stian Hole] is ready with a new book about Garmann, and it has become just as great as the first one.’ NRK

‘Still world class. … So consistent it is time to start talking about a Hole universe of its own.’

Borte vekk i byen

Ørkensang

Borte vekk i byen is a wonderful and busy little book! There are countless tasks and fantastic cityscape page spreads where all sorts of people live, and all waiting to be discovered!

Ørkensang is an original picture book – a love story that is both happy and unhappy, a story about an archaeologist and his experiences in the desert, where he finds his great love, a goddess who sings strange and exotic melodies out into the night. The archaeologist takes the goddess home with him, but after a while everyday life takes hold of him and life changes. The story is poetic and beautiful, and full of sun and sand.

Lost in the City

Among all those people is little Otto, who is in a large shopping centre with his family when he has the sudden urge to use the toilet! Things ought to be simple, but obstacles keep popping up and delaying him from making his way to a bathroom. Soon he finds himself alone and wandering through the town. His family isn't sure where he's made off to, but maybe you'll have more luck at finding him? Lose yourself in outdoor parks, teeming squares, busy shopping streets, long bathing beaches and crowded amusement parks! The Swallows Beneath the Ice Svalene under isen It is winter. Jon runs out into the ice-cold morning. He wants to go down to the ice, with his dad's axe hidden under his jacket. Will the ice be strong enough today, perhaps? Jon takes off one of his mittens and places his hand carefully against the ice. Then he hears a voice behind him. A girl in a grey jacket and big woollen gloves comes walking across the ice. ‘Do you know that the swallows live beneath the ice in winter?' she says.

The Lamb that didn’t Want to be Chop Lammet som ikke ville bli lår

Charming, subtle, wise and slightly bombastic discussion of the place animals take in the world (A-animals, B-animals, C-animals, X-animals, Y-animals, Z-animals...). The wise old hound with the doctorate in herding leads the discussion with the rather dim-witted shepherd, who might not be very good at herding but is rather good at finding things. Together they have no less than 66 feisty sheep to herd up the mountain, and all whilst they discuss the state of affairs... Lammet som ikke ville bli lår is a rare and clever discursive picture book about animals' placement in the world.

Porriot and the Invisible Man Purriot og den usynlige mannen Illustrated by Ragnar Aalbu

Purriot og den usynlige mannen is the first in a series of detective books for children. The master detective Porriot is sitting at the breakfast table together with his wife, Paprika, when his mobile rings. An old lady, Grandmother Bloom, needs help to solve a mystery. Grandmother Bloom lives in Hullaballooville, and Porriot and Paprika are soon on their way there. It turns out that both Grandmother Bloom and a little boy, Pars Lee, have been attacked within the past few days, and there is no trace of the culprit. Porriot will have to use all his shrewdness and grey matter to solve the mystery. In addition, he will have to deal with Chief Superintendent Cumber, not exactly the sharpest policeman, but one with a large ego. Our new hero, Porriot, is a brilliant cross between a famous Belgian detective and a leek (Allium porrum). Bjørn Rørvik's text does a fine job of bringing out the detective's personality, and the solution to the mystery is both funny and believable. Rørvik and Aalbu bring us detective fiction for children – nothing could be better! Rørvik’s previous book, Bukkene Bruse på Badeland, was sold to Denmark and Sweden.

Bjørn F. Rørvik (1964–) has worked extensively with film and video projects for the

business sector, and for children. He studied media in Volda, with a specialization in film and television. His first children’s book was published in 1996.

Rune Belsvik’s books about Foolfart have been compared to Winnie-the-Pooh. While Winniethe-Pooh has his Hundred Meter Woods, Foolfart lives near a stream along with many different characters. The little country along the stream is a place where there are little events and big ideas. The smallest incident can lead to the biggest commotion. But most days Foolfart skips stones in the water and talks to the ducklings. Piper chops wood. Windbag has wet feet. Doughboy bakes biscuits. Octavia sings and dreams of having a sweetheart. Deep in the woods is a quail keeping a rock warm in her nest. And suddenly the duckling has grown so he is able to run around on his own.

No other books have left such an impression on children growing up in Norway as these books have; the songs, the texts and the characters have become national institutions. And because Thorbjørn Egner was both the illustrator and the writer, the relationship between the pictures and texts is bound in a very special way. Very few authors get closer to the child’s imagination than Egner does. Karius and Baktus has also been immortalized in Ivo Caprino’s puppet film, and a full-scale Cardamom Town has been built at Kristiansand Zoo. Not only are Egner’s stories performed on stage in many countries, his books have, to date, been translated into 24 languages. And despite being published more than 50 years ago, they are still as popular as ever. Thorbjørn Egner’s books are sold to: bulgaria, china, denmark, faroe islands, finland, france, Georgia, germany, hungary, iceland, israel, italy, japan, korea, latvia, the netherlands, poland, romania, russia, Sri Lanka, sweden, turkey and usa

At last, another book about the fork truck driver Kurt! This time, rebels want to divide Norway into two parts and Kurt has to line up as Gunnar’s courier. His task is to deliver a super-important letter to Gunnar’s brother Bodvar, who is tied up at a quayside somewhere near the Russian border. Kurt is thrown into a near-fatal run of events, what with treachery, deprivation and the constant struggle to find working batteries for the truck.

Erlend Loe (1969–) is one of Norway’s best-selling authors. He made his literary début with Tatt av kvinnen in 1993. His break-through, both in Norway and internationally, came with the publication of his second novel Naiv.Super. in 1996. Kim Hiorthøy is a popular artist who has illustrated many books and made a number of book jackets.

The Fish Fisken

Kurt is a fork truck driver. Every day he drives his truck down at the docks, and he lifts boxes weighing more than a thousand kilos. Besides, Kurt has a moustache, a lovely wife and three weird children. One day Kurt finds something strange on the peer. Something he has never seen before in his entire life. A giant fish! He brings it home on his truck, and together he and his family travel around the world eating from the fish.

Kurt Turns Evil Kurt blir grusom

The fork truck driver Kurt has been a truck driver for many years. Almost since he was a little boy. One day Kurt saves a man who is sleep-walking from drowning. As a reward he gets a diamond the size of a football. But what do you need a diamond for? Kurt sells it and gets fifty million kroners. With all this money in the garage it is understandable that Kurt turns evil. It can happen to the best of them.

Kurt Quo Vadis? Kurt quo vadis?

Kurt is overcome by an uncomfortable inferiority complex. He quits his job in order to do something with his life. He wants to leave a trace after himself, and consequently decides to vacuum clean the whole world to make it all neat and tidy. Unfortunately, Kurt’s idea is not as good as he anticipated, and gradually he grows increasingly confused. But with the help of his youngest son Bud, it all turns out quite well in the end.

The books are printed in capital letters and have only one sentence per page. Perfect for the earliest readers! MY FIRST LION READER, 6–9 YEARS These books suit children who know all the capital letters and can read a little, but still find lower case letters unfamiliar. The text is formulated so that it should be as easy to read as possible and so offer the less practised readers the joy of a wonderful experience: to read a whole book on your own. LION READER, 7–11 YEARS The Lion Readers with their short lines and large letters are made for easy reading. The children will find a subject they care for, be it football, animals, loving somebody or monsters. LION PLUS, 9–12 YEARS Everyone who knows about the Lion readers will quickly find his or her way through the Lion Plus series. The books are created for slightly older children who may have had less reading practice than they need. The text in each book is still quite short and interspersed with illustrations, but the size of the letters is somewhat smaller.

Daddy always has so much to do. If it's not one thing, it's another. He'll never finish painting the house, even though Mummy nags him all the time about it. Finally Jonas and his little brother get out their paintbrushes. It can't be all that hard to paint a house, surely? A funny and original tale about two inventive little boys who want to help their Daddy.

Little Iris breaks Mummy's favourite Christmas decoration and is in despair. How can she possibly tell Mummy about the broken angel? But luckily, all's well that ends well: it turns out that Mummy once did the very same thing herself, with the very same angel when she was young. Thank goodness glue exists! A classic and warm Christmas tale for the youngest readers.

Eldrid Johansen has previously written two children's thrillers and now follows those up with two new thrillers. These books are spooky in a good way, dealing with supernatural beings, strange natural phenomena and ghosts.

Den onde busken deals with the sisters Guri and Susanne and their mother, who inherits Aunt Stina's summer house. Aunt Stina went mad after she lost her daughter. On the path there is a bush that they think might have something to do with the disappearance. Then Guri's ferret suddenly disappears without a trace.

The Girl From the Other Side

Jenta fra den andre siden is about Håvard, who has moved to a new place. He is struggling to make friends and has just lost his grandmother. One day when Håvard is down at the shore, he meets a friendly girl. She has very unusual eyes and peculiarly cold hands. She comes from the other side.

For several years, Stina has been dragging her way through the school day, memorising lessons so that it seems as if she can read and finding other ways to hide the challenges she faces. But it is not as easy now that she has got right up to Year Four. At the same time, Stina has other things to struggle with: her dad has travelled to London on business, and she misses him terribly. And her mum doesn't understand anything anyway.

This is the second book about Lars and his friends. Hot Dog is just as annoying as ever, Lars remains equally in love with Live, and she is still at least as beautiful as she ever was.

Homework Is Stupid

Lekser er kjipt is an important, but also humorous and hopeful story about difficulties at school. Janne Johnsen writes about topical problems, and her good sense for young people's language and children's reasoning mean that she has many readers. Now she has written about school and the challenging aspects of everyday life there. What does it feel like to have learning difficulties? To dislike reading aloud? To hate getting homework support?

Dronningen av Myrion

It's fashion week in Paris, and Clara has travelled there with her photographer father, who has been tasked with taking photographs for a book about the well-known Norwegian fashion designer Mons Meier. Clara and Aunt Annie are allowed in to see the final show when everything kicks off. A valuable item of diamond jewellery has disappeared, and nobody knows where.

Greetings, oh guests from the distant world called Earth. Please be seated in the royal carriage behind the royal sargs. The Queen and Sixar await.

The Fashion Mystery

Clara promises not to interfere, but once again unforeseen things occur and soon Clara finds herself firmly bogged down in the mystery. Where can the diamond necklace have gone? What does the strict lady who watches the door of Meier's studio know? And who are Meier and his assistant Oskar, really? The last book about Clara, Nobel-mysteriet, was nominated for the Ark Prize in 2010.

They cannot even stand each other! Along the way, we meet prenaks and sargs, twitterways and roachackers, and with charm and wisdom, a little raw muscle power and a dose of maths, everything works out for the best, so the Queen can invite them to a party in the square. Bjørg Øygarden has written an entertaining, artful and imaginative fantasy story.

Stikk!

Inghill is crazy about horses. She wants a horse more than anything else in the world. She thinks about horses, she talks about horses and she has her own horse – at least on a fake Facebook profile. But she is constantly exposed as a liar. Luckily she goes riding at the riding school, but she is too young to join the stable gang, and it is not enough to be on horseback twice a week.

Stikk! is about daring to trust and to love yourself and others.

Carla, My Carla

Then, one day, Mum and Dad lose their senses and give Inghill a horse for Christmas. Even if it is only spoilt rich daddy's girls who have horses! They find a stable nearby, and Inghill is the world's happiest girl. But her pony Carla is also a bit crazy and Inghill cannot quite manage to control her. One day it all goes terribly wrong! Carla gets frightened, runs out and slips on the ice – and Inghill breaks her arm. It does not help Inghill much that she is tougher than most, that she has two friends who are almost her best friends and a half-Indian friend whom she has integrated personally. It is only Carla that counts – and she has to be sold! Carla, min Carla is the story of Inghill: about what it is like to be a horse-crazy girl, about friendship and bullying, about fending for yourself and about taking responsibility for yourself and for those you love.

Minus meg

Leo og Mei

In the middle of a dive, Linda's heart stops. The mysterious Njål manages to re-start her heart and revive her once again, but it is soon discovered that Linda is terminally ill. If she doesn't receive a new heart in a very short space of time, she'll die.

Leo and Mei live on the same street. They live in the same type of house, each a mirror image of the other. But that is where the similarities end. While Mei lives an ordinary life, with parents there for her, giving her warmth and security, Leo's existence is difficult and violent.

Minus Me

Linda is upset and angry, and when Njål appears once again and persuades her to really live the time she has left, she understands that she has a lot of things to sort out. Not only must she see through the plans she made with her best friend Kima, but she also has to sort things out with her holiday friend Rune, who she perhaps hasn't always been all that nice towards. But nothing turns out quite as expected, and when Linda is finally close to achieving her aims, everything changes. All of a sudden, we hear a very different story...

Leo and Mei

Leo needs Mei to be there for him. And Mei needs Leo. Leo og Mei is a novel about a special friendship put to great tests. A friendship that has to and must be stronger than anything else, and that might just manage. It is a painful and yet hopeful novel, written in distinctive, confident and poetic language.

Mitt bankande hjarte

Verdensredderne

Mitt bankande hjarte deals with life at its finest and also its most awful. Amanda is fourteen years old and in love. At the same time, a dangerous illness threatens to rob her of everything: love and hope of being loved, life itself. But this is not a story about illness. It is a love story.

New, freestanding book about Emilie, with whom we are already acquainted from Stranger's last young adult novel, Barsakh.

My Beating Heart

The World Liberators

In this new text, Emilie becomes involved in a youth protest group known as The World Liberators. The protest group is made up of young people of Emilie's age and a little older, and gives an outlet for their opinions on issues such as child labour, cruelty to animals, etc. Things begins with innocent protests, but soon develop into something increasingly more advanced – not to mention risky.

My Time Will Come

Høsten

Min tid kommer

The novel's main characters, sisters Nanna and Fride, have lived in a hidden bunker with their father for many years following a great catastrophe. Everyone is dead and nature has withered away.

Hans Petter lives a shadow existence. He is the school's main bullying victim. His mother does not understand him. His father wants to have as little to do with him as possible. He has no friends, nobody in whom to confide. And hate is growing within him.

When the girls one day dare to go out into the world without their father knowing, he catches the same mysterious illness that caused the catastrophe to begin with. With haste the girls have to leave to find medicine if their father is to have any hope of survival. They must travel to the city they lived in prior to the catastrophe – the very same city that their mother chose to stay in to work as a doctor in one last attempt to help the sick, desperate and dying people. In spite of the gloomy scenario, Høsten is first and foremost a tale of life and love. A classic and timeless young adult novel. Rights sold to: France (Albin Michel) and Germany (Boje)

‘… a highly exciting story which will enthuse young readers.’ Dagbladet

‘Nielsen writes believably about how being bored to death and the fear for life alternate as being the strongest. … it is the sisters’ ability to observe which makes Høsten something more, something finer, than a pure description of a catastrophe. … The author distributes the chills generously in the text, shifting between specific dangers, like snapping animals, and a greater existential fear – the fear of being left alone, or maybe already being alone.’

One day, he comes into contact with Fera, a girl online. She clearly suffers from obsessive thoughts and apparently lives in an institution – because this Fera claims that she is contacting Hans Petter from the future. Still, Hans Petter finds in her his first good friend. She listens, she is intelligent, she cares. She chats with him daily while the world seems to fall apart around him.

Chance and desperation lead to Hans Petter slowly but surely triumphing over the bullies. He gets the upper hand on the teacher he hates. He is about to become a real winner. Then comes the bombshell. Fera can prove that she really is contacting Hans Petter from the future. And she can tell him that he is on his way to becoming much more than a winner – his destiny is to become a tyrant threatening the existence of all humankind. Min tid kommer is a sinister tale of a young person's development towards pure evil, a tale that has unintentionally become even more relevant.

two children. She has studied media, film and theatre, has worked in the online sector for many years, and has followed the creative writing programme at the Norwegian Institute of Children's Books.

Dagsavisen

‘Rather than making the story more grotesque – and possibly truthful – debut novelist Nielsen demonstrates great art of writing with his ability to observe with a child’s gaze. It is refreshing to see the world for the first time through Fride, and it is sad to follow Nanna’s struggle with finding her way based on what she remembers from early childhood.’ Bergens Tidende

Hockeysveis fører til dårlige rim

Espen has been receiving messages all his life, but they have mainly been something he could live with, and he realised that he should not speak about them with others – he is the only one receiving them. But recently they have been growing in number, they are coming more frequently and are getting more insistent, and it is clear that there is something he MUST do. Soon he and the other Messengers will tell the world the truth.

Siv Wyller is a debut author, a student from the creative writing programme at the Norwegian Institute of Children's Books and, not least, a great comic talent.

Signs

At the same time, the Stormyr Football Cup is approaching, and Espen is an obvious choice for right-winger. But is there something wrong with him? His sister Sofie is worried, but she has not got the strength to do anything about it. She does not want her weird brother Espen to ruin things for her and Jonna! Sofie wants to kiss Jonna on the club house steps, looking forward to the Cup and being together with Julie, who is struggling with an injured knee and is in love with the coach. Who has time to see Espen and to help him in the midst of all this? Tegn is about being ill, whether it is with a hurt foot or mentally, about how we react when unexpected things happen to people around us, and about what we choose to do. Because is it really our business?

Anne Ch. Østby (1958–) has worked for many years as a journalist in Norwegian press.

Mullets Lead to Bad Rhymes

Her first book is about the love-struck barber Lazze who cuts all the mullets in town. Lazze is the town's great hero, a dance band fan and a charmer who likes to talk in rhymes. And he is about to catch Gunn, a beautiful girl. But he has problems. When Lazze is nervous, his rhymes become ugly and offensive. What is more, his popularity is starting to go to his head. Eventually, Lazze is in danger of losing Gunn to the town's priest. On top of it all, the mullet is a dying fad, and his small town is threatening to turn its back on him. Lazze knows what to do: he goes to the dance band king Lasse Stefans for help.

Aarons maskin

It's spring and the school holidays are just around the corner. Whilst Billie matured early at primary school, her best friend Nina has grown at record speed over the past six months. It's no longer Billie who knows best about everything to do with being an adult. It's Nina. Billie doesn't even reach her knees anymore!

Aaron thinks it's thanks to Dad's new job that the family have a dream apartment in Libercasa, but it's soon Aaron himself who is in the centre of an unpleasant drama.

Is That What It Was?

Now it's all about losing innocence – and protecting old friendships in new ways. A striking, cheeky, surprising, funny and honest account of puberty and identity – with a radical and political 1980s backdrop.

Linde Hagerup (1968–) made her literary début in 1999 with the critically acclaimed

collection of short texts Og det skal vare så lenge. In 2008 she published her first children's book, Verdens største gorilla og andre rim, which received an award from the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs for its illustrations.

After a while Aaron tries to gain perspective about exactly who and what he can trust, but he discovers that Libermal's machine has a sinister dark side. Aarons maskin is the first installment in a planned trilogy.

‘Everything comes perfectly together in Sverre Knudsen’s retro-futuristic young adult novel. This book is just raw! … It is rare that one comes across a young adult novel which is both well written, has a clever moral, and in addition a drive which makes it impossible to put down. ... At the bottom of it lies a massive critique of market forces and the scrupulousness of capitalism. … This book has the potential of becoming an international bestseller.’ Dagbladet

‘The book is the first installment in a trilogy, and there is good reason to expect a lot from this work, which succeeds in the work of art it is to let philosophical questions and social critique blend seamlessly into the plot.’ NRK

‘Knudsen goes all the way to the finishing line with his message without having to sacrifice suspense – and vice versa. … Knudsen succeeds in making the readers ask questions about the financial forces we live under.’ Barnebokkritikk

Dagene før mai

High school is over, and Julie and Martin are all set to begin studying law in the autumn. They're even planning to live together. Julie can't help but think that it will be good.

The action in Dagene før mai takes place in a small rural area in northern Norway, where a young girl is struggling to cope with grief and emptiness after her father was lost in a boat accident. Her mother is distant in her sorrow, and her boyfriend has betrayed her.

Emergency Entrance

But first five weeks in London, working in a cafe with Ida. Martin really wants her to stay at home, but Julie's heart is set on going. She has to be sure. Something just isn't quite right. But when summer is over, everything will be perfect.

The Days Before May

In this stylistically strong short novel, the absurd is blended with the realistic, creating a very special atmosphere.

Ida has organised them jobs – but not in a cafe. Yayoi is a geisha club, a place where Japanese men go after work to be taken care of. Taken care of by beautiful, young women who can entertain, refill their glasses and smile attractively. The summer doesn't turn out quite as Julie expected. And what will autumn bring?

‘”I don’t want dad to be a big part of me anymore. I don’t like that a big part of me lies at the bottom of the ocean with water in its lungs,” thinks the nameless narrator, when her mother says that they mustn’t forget the father who disappeared at sea. This is one of the many beautiful images in the book. … There is an intensity and a nerve in this book, which is actually more like short prose than a novel. It consists of short pieces of text, images and episodes. … This sort of books is often enjoyed more by adults than by youths – the latter demand plot and action (like most readers, by the way). But Mathiassen has created a flow, and also a sort of surreal action, which makes it both gripping, easy to read and paradoxically quite humoristic.’ Dagbladet

Martin and his mother are always on the move. He is a drifter not only when it comes to friends and school, but also in free time. One constant in his life is the minidisc player that his father left behind following his mysterious death. It contains songs that his father treasured, but more than just that: one last track sheds light on his father’s final moments.

He calls himself ”Deks” and has just moved to the Oslo suburb Grorud with his mother, after his parents' divorce. It's 1994, and the suburb is a culture of graffiti, drugs and teenagers loitering at the mall. Deks meets Camilla, whose boyfriend is “Senc,” alias Victor, who neither goes to school nor works. He deals drugs, and tags at night. A triangular drama develops in secrecy and only waits to be unveiled. The problems continue to build for Deks when drugs go missing, and the sinister types they belong to are willing to do anything to balance their books. A white Arab horse comes trotting towards Linn when she is inside the old barn. A silk purse has been tied around the horse’s neck. Inside the purse is a letter, which tells Linn that the horse is called Magic Moon and that he is Linn’s secret birthday present from her father. She is also given a piece of jewellery that used to belong to her mother and which she must wear with pride, her father writes. Linn is very happy with her gifts, but why must the horse be secretly stabled inside the old barn? And why won’t her father ever tell her anything about her mother?

Horses and Secrets: Trouble Trøbbel Linn longs for her mother, of whom she actually knows very little. She doesn’t even know if her mother is alive. No one is prepared to speak about her. In an old box, Linn finds a letter that her mother wrote to her before she went away, but that makes everything even worse. Secretly going out riding on Magic Moon is the best thing is Linn’s life. Then, one day when they’re out in the forest, Linn receives an anonymous message: ‘Keep hidden, someone is in the barn.’

Mysterier Mysteries is the first book in a series about secrets, horses, Linn and the stable lad Sondre. They live in a large farm with plenty of horses. Linn misses her father, who has to travel a lot. She misses her mother as well: Linn’s mother disappeared mysteriously when her little daughter was only two years old …

Skateboarding

Finally, an informative and easy-to-read book about skateboards and skateboarding. Perfect for those that already know a little but want to learn more, and for those who aren’t yet quite sure which side of the board to put their feet on.

The Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize is among the world's most respected awards. Alfred Nobel, father of the Peace Prize, was born in Stockholm in 1833. Even so, Nobel decided that a Norwegian committee should hand out the Peace Prize, and in 1901 the very first prize was awarded.

Fritjof C Krogvold

But why did the Nobel Peace Prize come about? And how?

Fritjof C Krogvold (1971–) has skateboarded since 1985 and is the former president of the Norwegian Organisation for Skateboarding (NORB). This is his first book. Stian S. Evensen (1978–) has been skateboarding since 1986. He has studied photography and has an art degree. He works as a freelance photographer.

This is the story of a very special prize, and a very special man; an inspiring account of Alfred Nobel and the prize he established. Meet the man who both discovered dynamite and founded a prize for peace. Meet the woman with whom he fell in love, and who made him aware of how important it was to work for peace in the world. Meet some of the people who have worked hard to make this world a better place.

‘... this book is a complete presentation of the Peace Prize adventure.’ Aftenposten

Heidi Sofie Kvanvig (1978–) works as a historian, and has a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. She is an experienced communicator for children and youth, and it was through her work at the Nobels Fredssenter (Nobel’s Peace Centre) that she got acquainted with the Nobel Peace Prize.

Dataspillboka

Illustrated by Elin Maria Bugge

Illustrated by Rune Markhus

For thousands of years, Norway was a country at the edge of the world, deemed unimportant in terms of world history. Major and minor events occurred in Europe without anyone once thinking about Norway, but throughout the 270 years of the Vikings, all that changed.

Finally, an outstanding book about one of young peoples' very favourite pastimes! Kim and his cat become trapped in a computer game, and are forced to play their way back to reality.

Vikings

From Norway, the great unknown, came thousands of pirates, tradesmen and colonists. The Vikings enveloped entire countries, plundered cloisters, set out on great voyages of discovery and changed the history of Europe as a whole. This is an energetic and easy-to-read book about the time of the Vikings that invites the reader on a Viking mission, introduces them to sorcerers and gets them acquainted with the Viking gods – and may even teach them a little about what it was like to be a child at the time of the Vikings.

Jon Ewo (1957–) has worked as a consultant, editor, writer, author and publisher. His first book for young adults was published in 1992. He has also written children's books and crime fiction. All of his books are filled with a generous dose of humor. Elin Maria Bugge works with animation and illustration. Among other things, she has animated computer games.

The World’s First Balloon Flight Verdens første ballongferd Illustrated by Rui Tenreiro

One evening in November 1782, the Frenchman Joseph Montgolfier has an idea after having seen a small paper bag sent whirling into the air by the warm air in the fireplace. If a small bag can take off with warm air, surely a big bag could do the same, couldn't it? Perhaps a bag big enough to carry people? Together with his brother Étienne, he gets to work with trials and experiments. The Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris soon comes to hear of this. They will not have two simple sons of a paper factory owner taking the credit for something they have been trying to do themselves in vain for several years, and a race is soon on. A race that will include Louis XVI and MarieAntoinette, as well as a duck, a cockerel and a sheep.

Lena Jensen (1971–) is a journalist. This is her debut as a children's author. Rui Tenreiro (1979–) grew up in Mozambique. After finishing his studies at the Kent

Institute of Art & Design, he moved to Norway in 2003. He then went to Sweden where he took an MA at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.

The Elephant Man Elefantmannen Illustrated by Hilde Hodnefjeld

This is the powerful story of Joseph Merrick, also known as the Elephant Man due to his deformed appearance. A gripping story you will never forget.

▶ N o n - Fi c ti o n

▶ N o n - Fi c ti o n

Lena Jensen

Joseph began to develop deformities when he was two years old. He was an imaginative, playful and intelligent boy and had quite a happy childhood until he turned eleven, when his mother died, and his father found a new wife. His step-mother gave his father an ultimatum: ‘Joseph or me.’ Joseph was thrown out by his father and had to earn his own money. A period then followed in which he travelled around freak shows in Victorian England and in Europe, earning a small fortune for himself before being robbed. Abandoned in Belgium, where he was on tour, he was rescued by a doctor who took care of him and let him live in a hospital. There, however, he became a freak of another kind by being exhibited naked to gasping medical students. He had a lot of bad experiences, but things gradually got better later in his life, as he was given more respect. A number of famous people visited him, including the Princess of Wales. He died one night when he insisted on sleeping lying down, like ordinary people, and was suffocated by the weight of his large head. A gripping tale about being different, about refusing to be a victim and managing to find happiness even in an unhappy situation – and about seeing the beauty of life and of other people.

Mariangela Cacace (1981–) has a Neapolitan father and a Norwegian mother, and has lived in Naples for many years. Her previous publications include a number of books for young people. Hilde Hodnefjeld trained at the Oslo National Academy of Arts, and works as an illustrator and draughtswoman.

Annalisas dagbok

Hvor kommer jeg fra?

Annalisa’s Diary ‘I look up at the starry night sky and dream of being one of those many, blinking lights up there, able to look out over the whole universe. I wish I could fly away from everything. Open the window, climb onto a rainbow and away up into the sky.’ 14-year old Annalisa Durante often wrote in her diary. She wrote about what it was like to grow up surrounded by mafia and criminality in the back streets of Naples, about her wishes for the future, falling in love, her friends and life at school. She described the fear of the mafia and her dreams of a world free from evil and unfairness. In March 2004, Annalisa was shot down and killed by Camorra, one of the world's largest mafia organisations. Her only mistake was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In Annaliasas dagbok, the story of her life and ultimate fate is combined with extracts taken from her diary and accounts given by her family and friends.

‘As a whole the book tells us that life is vulnerable and valuable, that children trust their parents’ care, and that it can be a lonely experience to stand up against power that is based on fear, violence, and money.’ Barnebokkritikk.no

Where Did I Come From? Illustrated by Rune Markhus

This is an illustrated fact book about a girl who, one evening when she is going to bed, asks her dad: ‘Where did I come from?’ Her dad explains: ‘You know you came from your mummy's tummy, we've spoken about it before’. ‘But before that?’ ‘Then you were just a little seed.’ Then her father tells her about reproduction. ‘ But before that?’ ‘Mummy came from Granny and Grandpa.’ ‘But before that?’ Her father tells her about Great-Granny, and her mother, and so on. ‘ But before that?’ asks the girl.

▶ N o n - Fi c ti o n

So we are taken back to our ape ancestors, and further and further back in evolutionary development, with material that always ends with the girl's insistent question: ‘But before that?’ all the way back to the beginning of life. But it does not stop there – because what was there before that? An original and ambitious picture book explaining one of our greatest existential questions for younger children. An exciting and fascinating journey back in time and into the core of our own existence. The book is richly illustrated by Rune Markhus.

Dag O. Hessen is a Professor of Biology at the University of Oslo. He has written many

Ida Ida

Illustrated by Esther van Hulsen

47 million years ago there lived an ape-like little creature in a jungle in Germany. Today she is best known to the world as the fossil Ida. In this wonderful, illustrated picture book we learn how she lived and how we know what we do about her today. Ida is our very own 47 million year old ancestor, and this picture book written by Jørn Hurum and Torstein Helleve from the Natural History Museum and illustrated by Esther van Hulsen brings Ida to life once again. The reader is taken on a journey to the jungle that Ida lived in as part of a stunningly illustrated tale of her life. In addition to a fictionalised picture book section based on what we know about Ida and the time that she lived, the book also includes a fact and activity section.

The Middle Ages in Norway Middelalderen i Norge Illustrated by Geir Moen

The Middle Ages were an extraordinary period and are presented here in a new way, written in Jon Ewo's characteristically straightforward and playful style. You can read a travel guidebook to Norway, find out what it smelt like in the Middle Ages and what the food tasted like. Here there is guidance on how to think medievally and learn the art of being a royal child, or the child of other people. And, not least, the art of being king. The book has been checked by experts.

Jon Ewo (1957–) has worked as a consultant, editor, writer, author and publisher. His first book for young adults was published in 1992. He has also written children's books and crime fiction. All of his books are filled with a generous dose of humor. Geir Moen (1976–) is a comic book artist and an author. He has produced several series, such as Heksehyl, Asfalt and Hex, to name but a few.

You might know that Sámi have reindeer. You might know that the Sámi speak a completely different language. You might know that the Sámi have their own parliament in Kárásoohka. Here you will find out a little more about who the Sámi are and what it means to be Sámi today.
