40 WEEKS, A HUMAN PREGNANCY AND 81 OTHER WAYS TO REPRODUCE

It takes 40 weeks to grow a human baby, and along the way the relationship between the foetus and the pregnant woman bears resemblance to that of a parasite and its host. One takes and takes, while the other one almost dies in the process. Why do we as humans carry our babies inside our bodies for so long, and is there a reason that we are throwing up and feeling nauseous? Are there any better ways to reproduce? Does any living being reproduce in a stranger way than us humans?

Throughout the 40 weeks of a human pregnancy we meet another being who’s finished reproducing each week. The spotted hyena gives birth after only 16 weeks, but she has to give birth through a penis-shaped clitoris, which cracks

open during labour. Do they have it easier? The common Surinam toad doesn’t have a uterus, but instead has evolved to have a swollen piece of skin on their backs where the eggs sink in. This way she can carry the offspring with her, instead of leaving the eggs in the water. Are there any signs that it’s actually quite clever how the human body handles it?

This book gives evolutionary comfort throughout the troubles of pregnancy and an explanation as to how we ended up here, as the smartest species with the most tiresome, but nonetheless not such a stupid way to reproduce.

Excerpt from 40 weeks:

Week 8

The Giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) lies motionless in her cave. She’s stuck her eggs to the roof, they hang down in big clusters, there are a hundred thousand of them. She measures four metres from the end of one tentacle to the other, she is long as a station wagon, and weighed up to 50 kilos when she crept into the cave eight weeks ago. Since then, she has not eaten, not gone outside, not done anything except watch over the eggs. The only movement she makes is to blow water over the eggs with her big siphon, the tube she usually rapidly squeezes water through to shoot her body through the ocean. She makes sure the eggs get enough oxygen, that parasites and algae don’t stick to them. With her sensitive suction cups she strokes the eggs, feeling them carefully, taking care that also those in the centre of the cluster get fresh water. Slowly she starves as she sacrifices everything for the eggs, for the babies, she will lay there until they hatch in about 4-5 months, the amount of time it will take depends on how warm the water is. Does she get hungry, does her digestive system protest when she doesn’t give her body nutrition?

I’m lying in my own cave, my dark bedroom. I am an octopus whose only purpose is to take care of my offspring, the embryo inside me. I vomit to make sure no parasites get near my egg, I stroke my hands carefully over my belly, I will lay here for a long time still. I should feel happy there’s a new human growing in my belly, thankful that it’s going well so far, but I can’t. To feel nauseated is not like feeling a little pain in the foot, something I can distance myself from, dull with painkillers and still function. The nausea ruins everything I try to do, and no matter what I do it won’t disappear. I cannot think when I feel nauseated, I cannot take care of my three-year-old while I’m vomiting, I cannot have conversations with my partner while I wait for my stomach to turn inside out again. I can only lie completely still and hope it passes.

There is no better literature than great non-fiction. Written by specialists who are unbound by strict terminology or publication pressure, but in a liberal and relaxed language. The biologist, journalist, writer and columnist Blix is incredibly good here. […] the most amazing stories about mating, pregnancy, gender and sexuality.

... my judgement is that this is the best book I've read so far this year. The combination of well-written text, a good frame story and incredible facts about weird pregnancies, is simply put a winner. I'm unsure if I'll have the pleasure of reading anything better this year.

Dag O. Hessen TRACKING THE WOLVERINE

Chasing the animal, the purpose and the memories in a diminishing nature

One day in February 1972 Dag O. Hessen is on a ski trip with his father in the mountains, when they come across a wolverine track in the snow. The young Dag convinces his father to follow the trail, but after half an hour of searching, the imprints of the predator disappear down a steep passage and they have to give up on their hunt.

50 years later he’s back at the same place to pick up on the trail of the animal that escaped him. His father is now long gone, but the mountains are still there. And somewhere out there is a wolverine.

Jervesporet:

130 x 205 mm / 224 pages

The wolverine, and the desire to meet the wild animal, is the framing of the story taking place in the mountainous nature. But this is also a story about time passing and changes we cannot prevent. About everything that slips through our fingers. The things we cannot completely catch and tame: A childhood long gone, close family members who have passed, the wild nature and a natural diversity which is about to weather away. And at the bottom of all of this lies a deep affection and respect for nature and biology, presented by one of Norway’s most respected non-fiction authors.

Jakten på dyret, meningen og minnene i en krympende natur

Excerpt from Tracking the Wolverine:

The sky above us is white, below us the snow is white, and these two variations on white meet at the horizon. Brilliant white. The sun is starting to make its comeback after the winter, and is detectable through the white cloud cover. There are clusters of scrawny mountain birches, further down birch forest, then below us a fir-clad valley and in the distance beyond a view of the mountain peaks in the north-west. Father and I are in the mountains. It is the winter holidays and we’ve walked from the cabin, through the forest and off any ski paths, as we have so often. We cross a set of fox tracks, in a dip with willow thicket the grouse have embroidered their prints in the snow, interrupted by hare tracks. Here the grouse have had their roosts, partly buried, partly covered by the night’s light snowfall, before they shook off the snow at sunrise, breakfasted on winter buds, leaving behind nothing but wing prints as a farewell gesture in the fresh snow. The winter mountains stand silent and still, there is little to see, but these tracks tell a mute story of who’s been here, and on rare occasions a dramatic hunting story, with trails of blood in the snow. But mostly it’s just white.

Then we cross some tracks unlike any usually found here. The prints are of massive paws, and they run in a straight line from the horizon in the north and disappear over the gentle mountain ridge to the east. “Bear,” I say. “Wolverine,” says my father, who is widely knowledgeable and also a vet. The largest Mustelid in Norway, he says, a relative of the snow weasel and stoat, but with the appearance of a small bear. A creature few ever get to see, and such compact ferocity and strength that there’s barely anything equals it. It doesn’t recoil from the steepest gorge, or a lynx or wolf or bear, and it can take down a reindeer many times its own weight, before biting off its head and hanging it up high in a tree - like a trophy. It has jaws that can chew frozen flesh or crush even the strongest thighbone, and it’s a perpetual motion machine that can go on and on. In short, the wolverine is way off the scale, says my father, a pragmatic man with no taste for dramatic exaggeration.

DEN NYE FISKEN

Kjetil Østli and Simen Sætre THE NEW FISH

A global history of salmon farming

In the early 1970s, a group of scientists wanted to make more food for the world. They looked to the sea. They sampled genes from 41 Norwegian and Swedish rivers, and designed a salmon that was fatter, more docile, and faster growing. This was the beginning of a new industry, salmon farming.

The industry spread from coastal Norway to all corners of the Globe. Jobs were created, business boomed, salmon farmers became filthy rich.

A new type of food, the salmon sushi, spread across the world. But as soon as the new fish was let loose in nature, unexpected things started to happen. Wild salmon stocks disappeared, diseases spread in the salmon farms, salmon louse swarmed, and the new industry became highly contested.

'... 365-page exposé in the vein of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring ...'

NEW YORK TIMES

In a prize-winning, five-year investigation, the authors Simen Sætre and Kjetil Østli take a closer look at the global salmon industry. For the first time, the whole story of salmon farming has been told. The result combines nature writing from Norwegian fjords with classical muckraking and character-driven literary non-fiction. The authors start out with a question: What happens when you place a new animal in the fjords? This book gives you the answer. NORLA SELECTED

Excerpt from the Prologue, The New Fish

We thrash about and are a danger to ourselves and to the rest of the life that surrounds us, wrote biologist Edward O. Wilson, who says that today’s world resembles a Star Wars-like civilization with Stone Age emotions, medieval institutions and godlike technology. “Apart from the fact that we mostly behave like monkeys and have a limited life expectancy, we are godlike,” Wilson writes.

With this kind of mentality, our intelligence and creative urges can also be our enemy. This is thematized in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. In these works, man uses his brain to create something new and innovative – but the results are terrifying.

Goethe describes the tragedy of development, where great ambitions for society upset nature’s balance. For Shelley, the new creature ultimately becomes a monster.

On the other side of this cautious attitude is the engineer-like optimist; our intelligence has taken us this far – so it can therefore also be our salvation.

Problems are solved with new research and innovation. If the air gets too hot, we’ll invent technology to slow down the heating. If the atmosphere is filled with CO2, we’ll capture and purify more CO2. If there are fewer wild animals to eat, we must produce more domestic animals or change our eating habits. And with fewer fish in the ocean, we have to create new fish to eat.

Yes, the fish – shouldn’t we also domesticate the fish?

Hilde Østby MAP OF LONELINESS

About humanities unstoppable desire for community, and what drives us apart

In March 2020 the world closed down and stayed completely or partly closed for two and a half years. Most arenas where humans go for companionship, such as offices and concerts, weddings and funerals, disappeared or were decimated overnight. It’s as if the whole world has taken part in a huge experiment in loneliness, according to author Hilde Østby. The result of this experiment is worth dwelling on, as it’s not an easy diagnosis to just brush off. Research shows that loneliness, if it is chronic, is more dangerous for our health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

In Map of Loneliness Hilde Østby approaches the subject on a personal, philosophical and journalistic level in order to get to grips with loneliness – one of our most enigmatic and under-

communicated public health challenges. She shows us what loneliness does to us and asks where it comes from. That is a question which can be answered both medically and existentially. Maybe the mechanisms which drive us apart could later bring us back together? In that case loneliness is something we must solve as a community, through community, and for the community.

WOMEN PHILOSOPHERS Romance, revolution and fellowship

Did women philosophers exist in the ninetheenth century? Most certainly!

In Women Philosophers the works of nine women philosophers in the tradition from romanticism to phenomenology are presented: Germaine de Staël, Karoline von Günderrode, Bettina Brentano von Arnim, Hedwig Dohm, Clara Zetkin, Lou Andreas Salomé, Rosa Luxemburg, Edith Stein and Gerda Walther. The collection clarifies their central position within movements such as German idealism, socialism, Marxism and phenomenology. In a clear and engaging style, it discusses central questions such as: What is truth? What lies at the basis of the human feeling of community? How should humans relate to nature? How can we best think about gender and identity? How should we respond to social injustice? What is the most productive understanding of the human capacity for empathy and community?

The red thread running through the book is the respective philosopher's wish to write accesible, engaging and for a broader audience. The introduction by the editors gives a better overview of women's place in the period, and presents each of the nine philosophers with a retrospective view of their historical importance as well as their relevance today.

'Who would have believed that an anthology on dead female philosophers would be one of last year’s best non-fiction publications?'

Excerpt from Women Philosophers

The long nineteenth century—the period beginning with the French Revolution and ending with World War I—was a transformative period for women philosophers in German-speaking countries and contexts. Philosophically speaking, this period spans romanticism and idealism, socialism, Nietzscheanism, and phenomenology. Contributing to these movements, women philosophers explored a wide range of philosophical topics and styles, helped shape philosophy’s agenda, and translated their thoughts into activism and practice. This last point is significant: being excluded from formal academic education and positions, many women philosophers developed a way of philosophizing that was more activist in spirit and geared toward communicating with ordinary people rather than university colleagues and students. In and through their practice of philosophy, women philosophers gained an increasing sense of agency, challenged existing doctrines, built networks across cultures and language barriers, and drew upon and developed connections between various philosophical traditions. Thus, the works produced by women philosophers often offer a different angle on the history of philosophy; these works help us to rethink both the intellectual history of the nineteenth century and the systematic questions that motivated and underpinned its philosophical developments. Moreover, they reveal to us the ways in which philosophy was once practiced—and how philosophy can and indeed should be pursued: in dialogue with, rather than in abstraction from, our daily lives. In essence, the contributions of nineteenth-century women in the German tradition demonstrate that philosophy has the potential to transform lives and also to be transformed by our lived experiences and practices.

Abid Raja MY GUILT A Story about Liberation

The former Norwegian Minister of Culture Abid Raja has been called loud, dominant and a poser.

But his life has in large parts been the opposite: Hiding pain and the handicap he was born with. Hiding from the violence and the bullying. And hiding his feelings for his one true love. His feeling of guilt - a mixture of shame and fear, has stopped him from acknowledging many of the other feelings he as a person is equipped with. The only thing he at one point was feeling was rage and anger.

When he, as a grown up, sought help from a female psychologist to find a way to control his temper, she asked him: "Do you have any idea about where this anger comes from? Is there something else in your life that is the real issue that spark this anger?"

This is the brutally honest story about Abid Raja´s turbulent journey to rise above his class, his yearslong fight to be with the woman he loves and the painful liberation from shame, guilt and exclusion.

Nadia Ansar MY SHAME

A Story about Expectations and Secession

Nadia Ansar was named after the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci. She was the symbol of the “perfect 10”; unattainable, flawless, and perfect. On the outside she was the immaculate daughter, the good immigrant and the well-integrated psychologist, an expert in feelings such as shame and guilt. What no one could see was that she carried with her a heavy rucksack of shame and dark secrets.

Through the book My Shame she now wishes to use her own personal and professional voice to tell the story about the talented minority girl’s fight to be able to be herself. About growing up in Oslo as the daughter of the local grocer and the only girl in her school class with a minority background. About her dad’s breakneck split between the equal Norwegian society and the patriarchal expectations of their culture. About the fight for equality in her marriage, after marrying the love of her life.

As an adult Nadia Ansar has often witnessed several well-educated sisters of minority backgrounds give up on the painful balancing act in the supposedly equal Norway. They become housewives with hijabs, and some move back to their parents’ home country. Nadia Ansar believes it is the feelings of shame which primarily prohibits them from leading free lives.

Nadia Ansar (43) is a psychologist, specialist in emotion-focused therapy and specialist in clinical family psychology. For the past 19 years, she has worked as a psychologist and project manager in, among other things, Alternative to violence, in child and youth psychiatry, in family protection, and as department head in the Blue Cross Compass. For the past 6 years, she has worked at the Institute for Psychological Counseling in Oslo and has recently completed a doctorate in emotion-focused skills training for parents, under the auspices of the Norwegian Institute for Emotion-Focused Therapy, the Research Council of Norway and the University of Oslo.

Sex is an important part of a relationship. Some believe it is the very glue in the relationship, but do you know what the key to good everyday sex over time is? It is neither technical skills nor synchronized orgasms that are most important. Couples who have good sex over many years primarily have a solid friendship at the bottom. A friendship characterized by mutual trust and admiration. And then they prioritize sex. Even though they are busy and have a thousand irons in the fire, they choose to spend time being intimate with each other. They make room for it, because they have experienced that everyday sex strengthens their closeness and sense of belonging.

In Instruction Manual for Everyday Sex, GP and couples therapist Siri Dalsmo Berge guides you through common sexual concerns and problems as she does in consultations with patients. She combines medical knowledge and up-to-date research on sexuality and health with good, well-documented advice on how you can increase your sexual well-being and intimacy with your partner in everyday life.

The quality of your close relationships is the most important factor that affects how long you live. Physical intimacy and sex are an important part of this, and a good sex life contributes to better health, while problems with sex or difficult sexual experiences create ill health. Marco Elsafadi PARENTING POWER

The Method That Strengthens Your Relationship with your Child

As a parent you can help your child develop a strong and positive mindset. You can offer help to handle difficult emotions. You can parttake the good times and support the child’s curiosity as it explores the world. But how do you lay the groundwork for this good communication, and how can you strengthen it? In Parenting Power, youth worker Marco Elsafadi offers you the tools you need to get closer to your child. He shares his very best techniques on how to meet and understand your child in the best possible way – as well as how you can recognize the pitfalls when they first appear.

It really all comes down to investing the time and effort – what you put into your relationship with your child while they are still living at home. Which questions should you ask, and which conversations should you have? The fights between parent and child can seem unnecessarily large if you don’t understand each other when situations arise. When you take their feelings seriously, your child will learn that they can come to you and share news, get support and comfort. Their safe haven. If the child feels loved, prioritized, and acknowledged, the desire to explore will come naturally and the chances that they will become a confident and independent young adult is high – which again will create strong and healthy relationships with other children and adults.

Foreldrekraft 148 x 210 mm / 256 pages

Marco Elsafadis’ reflective, whimsical, and warm style of narration will both engage and touch anyone who reads this book. By following his methods, you will be able to better connect with your child – right now, but also later in life.

Marco Elsafadi (born 1976) is a Palestinian refugee who arrived in Norway with his family in 1987. He was a professional-level basketball player and represented the Norwegian national team for 12 years. In 1993 Marco began his involvement with children and young adults, and in 2002 he established the organization New Page, which up until 2011 worked with youths in difficult situations: drug problems, skipping school, leisure problems and violence. Today he's the leader of UNIFY, a foundation which works preventatively and is forward-looking by offering to follow up youth groups through weekly activities and environmental therapeutic meetings.

Hele arbeidet strikkes i glattstrikk foruten vrangbordene.

Ida Wirak Trettevik

A KNITTER’S YEAR

Ida Wirak Trettevik has been designing knitting patterns under the name of Witre Design since 2018. Her patterns are primarily for women, with some items for children and men. A Knitter’s Year contains a total of 30 patterns, many of them new and exclusively designed for this book.

Knitted clothing has become important for many people in a time of increasing focus on slow fashion and sustainability. Because we take extra good care of clothes we make for ourselves, choosing materials and colours we are fond of and will want to wear for a long time. And because a person who knits knows how much work goes into every single piece of clothing. A Knitter’s Year is a result of this: the desire to knit your own wardrobe, with clothing for every season.

The book covers a whole year, and the photos show Ida and her family in wellknown locations in Oslo and eventually at their new home on the island of Engeløya in Nordland, Northern Norway.

BESTSELLER!

Ida Wirak Trettevik (b. 1989) is the woman behind Witre design, a website of knitted clothes and patterns. She is followed by more than 30,000 Instagram users. The first patterns launched in 2018, and from the start, Witre design has been about finding a modern expression for knitted garnments and designs, creating patterns that will inspire to knit one's own wardrobe – piece by piece. A strong motivation behind the concept is also to help knitters create pieces of good quality and longevity, adjusted to the individual knitter's own preferences.
