Cargo theft is a serious issue in Canada, costing around $5 billion each year Previously, cargo theft usually happened when trucks were parked Now, thieves are targeting moving vehicles, which is a new challenge.

Some new tactics to steal cargo can include:

1 Following Trucks: Thieves follow loaded trucks and break into the trailers while the truck is moving They grab cargo and then exit at a traffic light

2. Stopping Trucks: Thieves stop in front of a truck, allowing one of them to get into the trailer. The thief then gathers cargo and exits at the next traffic light.

To combat this, the following measures are recommended:

1 Drivers should stay alert and be aware of their surroundings at all times Maintain a 360-degree circle of awareness

2. Use padlocks on loaded trailers and trucks to slow down thieves. A high-quality padlock can buy time and deter theft.

3. Travel in well-lit areas whenever possible.

IT ALL BEGINS WITH SAFETY

FALL SAFETY TIPS FOR TRUCK DRIVERS

Summer has come to an end, so we need a new set of driving skills that match autumn conditions. Here are some tips to keep you safe on the road this fall.

Watch for Farm Equipment

Harvest season means more slow-moving farm machinery on the roads. Give them plenty of space.

Shorter days mean more driving in the dark. Ensure your headlights and taillights are functioning correctly and free of dirt and dust.

Drive Safely Through Leaves

Wet or dry leaves can be slippery and hide hazards. Increase your following distance and be cautious around leaf piles, which might conceal children

Watch for Wildlife

Deer and moose are more active in fall. Be alert for animals and adjust your speed in wooded areas.

Keep Sunglasses Handy

Fall sun is lower in the sky and cause glare Always have sunglasses and adjust your visors

Prepare for Fog

Fog is common on fall mornings. Slow down, increase the following distance, and use low-beam headlights.

Check Weather Forecasts

Fall weather can change rapidly Monitor forecasts, especially for long trips, and be prepared for sudden shifts, such as rain turning to ice or snow.

Pack Chains

Some provinces require truckers to carry four chains with them to be compliant If required, make sure you have a set in your truck, and ensure the chains are in good condition and you know how to use them.

Be Cautious When Coupling

Cold weather thickens the grease on the fifth wheel. Before driving, take your time to ensure the jaws are fully engaged.

GET CONNECTED

DON’T BE FOOLED BY FAKE PHONE NUMBERS

Cybercriminals are using Google search results to try to trick you into calling a phone number that they control. If you search for an organization on Google, scammers can manipulate the search results to display a fake phone number for the organization. Don’t take the chance of losing your investments on a risky phone call.

If you search on Google and call the fake number from one of these manipulated search results, you will be connected to a scammer. They will attempt to trick you out of your money by saying that your account needs updates or you need to transfer funds They may ask you for your login information so that they can access your account Once they gain access to your account, they quickly transfer your funds to accounts they control This is one investment that you don’t want to risk!

Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to a phone number scam:

Confirm that you are on the organization’s official website if you are going to buy one of their products or use one of their services

Double-check that the listed phone number is the same one on the organization’s official website Report any fake listings, ads, or any other type of disinformation through Google’s Report services.

WELLNESS CORNER

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM COVID-19, FLU, AND RSV

Fall weather is upon us. That means longer nights, cozier days, and more time spent indoors. It is also the dreaded cold, flu, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection (RSV) season.

It is predicted that this year ’ s flu, COVID-19, and RSV season will be a doozy. Here are some ways to protect yourself and others from catching an unwanted virus:

Vaccines help the body learn how to defend itself from disease without the danger of infection. Vaccines are offered for COVID-19 and seasonal influenza. Washing your hands with soap will remove most germs, including respiratory viruses, from your hands. If soap and water are unavailable, consider using a hand sanitizer with at least a 60% alcohol content to kill germs. Keep surfaces clean and germ-free using household cleaners containing soap or detergent. If you have a respiratory virus, or think you might be unwell, wear a mask to help protect others. Practice social distancing Infectious droplets and particles are more concentrated closer to the infected person. If you are showing symptoms of a respiratory virus, some tests can determine what virus you have and can help inform you of treatment and preventative options. Your healthcare provider can help advise you to get tested for respiratory viruses.

DID YOU KNOW…?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women and the second leading cause of death from cancer Breast cancer can also occur in men, but it is not common.

If you are facing a cancer diagnosis, you are not alone. The Canadian Cancer Society has an Information Helpline, a national, toll-free service where people with questions or concerns about cancer can find trusted information and support.

Call the Cancer Information Helpline at 1 888 939 3333. Your call is free and confidential, and you can call as often as you like – and talk for as long as you need.

When you see a team member doing great work, let them know by sending them a thank you card or certificate. Each quarter, a team in each region reviews all submissions and recognizes those who have gone "Above and Beyond" to receive a $50.00 gift certificate. Each winner is also eligible for the President's Award in January. You can email your recognition, along with the reason why you nominated the recipient and the values they demonstrated, to recognition@canadacartage.com, or online at www.canadacartage.com/truenorth
