SAFETY CORNER
SPRING WEATHER DRIVING
Spring weather is generally less dangerous than winter, but hazards can still occur. It's essential to pay attention to the weather and be aware of your surroundings at all times
Here are some spring safety driving tips:
Perform a thorough pre-trip inspection of your vehicle. Maintain proper tire pressure. Ensure that brakes, turn signals,
and windshield wipers work correctly. Ensure windows and mirrors are clear of moisture before driving your vehicle.
Winter is not over yet! Spring can see unpredictable temperature changes, with four seasons in one day Rain can change to snow, and vice versa, and water on roads can freeze and become black ice or ice, which is prominent in shaded areas, bridges, and overpasses. Make sure to prepare for temperature swings by bringing the appropriate attire. Drivers should also check overnight temperatures and prepare for roads freezing and black ice forming.
Slow down in the rain and windy conditions. Springtime brings gusts of wind and windstorms Tractor-trailers are particularly difficult to control in high wind conditions It is essential to slow down your vehicle as much as possible or pull it over to the side if the wind becomes too much. When wet roads become slippery, they reduce a vehicle's handling and increase the distance it takes to stop. Puddles and flooding can limit tire traction and may cause the truck to hydroplane.
Follow these spring truck-driving tips to help keep you driving safely all season long

WELLNESS CORNER
NATIONAL SUN AWARENESS WEEK
While hard to believe, Canada on average has over 300 days of sunlight each year Sunlight provides warmth and vitamin D, kills pathogens, and lifts moods. But for all the good that sunlight does, it can also do some serious harm to our bodies in the form of melanoma (skin cancer). While you should go out and enjoy the sun, you should also protect yourself from it.
Here are some tips to protect yourself while still spending time outside:
Avoid being outside during peak hours when the UV is the highest between 11-a m through3 p.m daily
Wear sunscreen with at least 30 SPF when spending time in the sun. Accompany the sunscreen with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
Clothing with a UFP rating of 50+ is the best option. However, wearing white or light-coloured clothing with loose-fitting or tightly woven fabrics like denim is also a good option.
If you are outdoors for an extended period, seek shade wherever possible.
People most likely to develop melanoma have:
Fair skin that is sensitive to the sun and burns rather than tan, has freckles, or has natural red or blonde hair.
People that have more than 50 moles on their body.
A family history of melanoma or personal history.
Extreme UV exposure through the sun or tanning beds
History of severe sunburns.
To learn more about checking your skin for melanoma, visit the Canadian Dermatology Association website at https://dermatology.ca/public-patients/skin/melanoma/.

CANADA CARTAGE EXPANDS DEDICATED TRANSPORTATION SERVICES IN ONTARIO WITH THE PROPOSED ACQUISITION OF TOPAC EXPRESS
We're pleased to announce that Canada Cartage has entered into an agreement in principle to acquire Topac Express, a leading provider of dedicated transportation services based in Bolton, Ontario.
Founded in 1983 by President Verne Camplin, Topac focuses on working with customers in the consumer packaged goods markets and delivers a wide array of products including pet food, confectionaries, rice products, packaging materials, personal care items and more. Topac has an impressive track record for on-time delivery performance with their customers and has been a long-term partner with them for many years. In 2014, they were honoured as Mars Canada's "Carrier of the Year".
Topac offers yard management and shuttle services between warehouse and plant operations, as well as local and long distance truckload services across Canada and the eastern United States. The company has approximately 120 employees. They have a fleet of approximately 40 company tractors, 12 owner-operator tractors, and 300 temperature-control and plate trailers.
We view this as an acquisition that will allow us to help Topac and their customers to grow with Canada Cartage into other geographic markets that are not currently serviced by Topac
Topac owner and President Verne Camplin will be staying on with the company to ensure a smooth transition for staff and customers. Canada Cartage will be extending employment to all Topac drivers and staff.
The final purchase agreement is expected to close in May, after customary closing activities have taken place.

HERE WE GROW AGAIN
ROADCHECK 2024: TRACTOR PROTECTION SYSTEMS AND ALCOHOL AND CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE POSSESSION
The annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Roadcheck inspection blitz runs May 14th to 16th, and enforcement teams will focus on tractor protection systems and alcohol and controlled substance possession.
Based on the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria, inspectors will look for critical vehicle inspection violations. The driver's operating credentials, hours-of-service documentation, seat belt use, and alcohol or drug impairment will also be part of the inspections.
Controlled substance and alcohol possession and use remains a significant concern for motor carriers, drivers and the general public. Commercial motor vehicle drivers are reminded to adhere to their company's policies and to not possess, use or be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances while on duty.
In addition, by focusing on the tractor protection systems, International Roadcheck aims to increase awareness for drivers, motor carriers, technicians and enforcement personnel of these critically important vehicle components; specifically, the tractor protection valve, trailer supply valve and anti-bleed back valve, which may be overlooked during trip and roadside inspections.
Should any violations be found, a vehicle will be placed out of service, meaning it cannot be operated until the conditions have been corrected. Drivers will also be placed out-of-service if an inspector deems any driver-related out-of-service conditions were violated
VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER
Blaine Dabels, Company Driver - Home Depot, Kamloops, British Columbia
I want to bring to your attention your Canada Cartage Driver, Blaine, who makes deliveries out of store 7144 Blaine went above and beyond by helping me hand-load the moulding into the residence. His Moffat could not make it to the protected area of the home to drop the load because of the snow. Blaine drove the Moffat as close as he could and then proceeded to help me hand load the product into the house – nearly a thousand linear feet of moulding!
Blaine works for Canada Cartage, and it's clear that the values of Canada Cartage mirror our own when it comes to doing the right thing for the customer. Moreover, Blaine proved on this day that he lives those values.

GET CONNECTED VISHING AND AI
Cybercriminals are not only using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to construct phishing emails, they are now using AI to create voice phishing (vishing). Unfortunately, teaching AI software to sound like a specific person is surprisingly easy. The cybercriminal only needs a short audio clip of your voice from a recorded phone call or a video posted to social media. Once cybercriminals have your voice, they can easily target your family, friends, and coworkers with AI-powered vishing
A vishing story that happened in the United States early last year involved a mother who received a "call" from her daughter, who was away on a ski trip, saying that she had been kidnapped. The voice and the inflictions matched her daughter's voice perfectly. The vishing call fooled the mother, and she believed that her daughter was abducted. It wasn't until the daughter called the mother that the situation calmed down, and they realized they had been the victims of a virtual kidnapping scam.
Vishing is not only used to target the public with kidnapping scams, but it is used to impersonate managers and executives in an organization. With this scam, you receive an unexpected call from upper management asking for your help with an urgent project. The voice will ask you to wire money to a vendor to meet an impending deadline. In reality, there is no vendor, and you have just sent money to cyber criminals. If you receive one of these unexpected phone calls, dial the person directly to confirm. If you are speaking directly to someone, ask questions that the person calling you would know the answer Always stop and think before taking action on something that does not seem right or does not fit your job description Following up and asking questions will help to expose fraud before it happens
