STROKE AWARENESS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

IT ALL BEGINS WITH SAFETY

IMPORTANCE OF REPORTING INCIDENTS AND INJURIES

We are all trained to report any near misses, injuries, or incidents to a supervisor or safety representative. However, many incidents, especially those involving first-aid-type injuries, are often not reported for various reasons. It is essential to understand why all injuries must be reported.

Why It Is Important to Report Injuries

The most important reason is to ensure the situation or hazard is safe for yourself and others at the worksite or work area. Another reason is to share your experience or the lessons learned from the incident with others in order to prevent it from occurring in the future.

How to report an injury

Report all injuries to your direct Supervisor or Manager.

Summary

Reporting all injuries, no matter how minor, protects you and the company by possibly preventing a recurrence for you or any other person.

You never know when something minor will develop into something more serious. There are always lessons to be learned, even from minor injuries, that can help prevent others from occurring in the future.

Please join us in congratulating André on this well-deserved honour! We're lucky to have him on our team.

TRUE NORTH ABOVE AND BEYOND WINNERS

The True North program recognizes company drivers and staff demonstrating outstanding customer service, teamwork, and core values. The program encourages managers, supervisors, and coworkers to acknowledge employees with specially designed recognition cards and certificates

Quarterly, a team in each region (BC, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec) reviews all submissions and looks for exemplary actions our staff took. Those who have gone "Above and Beyond" will receive a $50.00 gift certificate. There are multiple awards per region each quarter.

Quarter 1 "Above and Beyond" Winners of $50.00 Gift Certificates

The committee reviewed all submissions and chose the following employees for this quarter's "Above and Beyond Award"

Steven Boisjoly, Warehouse Worker, Canada Cartage

Final Mile, Ottawa, Ontario

Steven consistently arrives at least 30 minutes early for his shift, using the time to plan his day and ensure he’s set up for success in the warehouse He’s supportive and helpful to everyone he works with, always the first to ask if there’s more work to be done, and takes initiative by keeping the outside of the building clean without being asked. Steven encourages and challenges his team to be more efficient, creating fun, friendly competitions to boost morale. He is part of the joint health and safety committee and has expressed interest in earning his forklift certification and taking on more responsibility, including training new associates.

Mike Janosi, Company Driver, Oshawa, Ontario

When Mike arrived at the terminal and discovered that the freight hadn’t been processed or inventoried for transfer, he didn’t sit and wait, or depart without it. Instead, he took the initiative to inventory and load the freight himself, ensuring that the critical product was shipped on time to meet customer expectations. His proactive approach helped avoid potential service disruption.

Jyoti Khosla, Operations Manager, Edmonton, Alberta

During one of the busiest times of the year, Jyoti stepped up to support both our team and our customers when the operations manager was away. Her leadership and dedication were evident as she helped keep our drivers safe, ensured the dispatch team felt supported, and maintained strong customer satisfaction.

Jamie Morris, HR Coordinator, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Jamie was recognized by the CCLS team at First Gulf in Brampton, Ontario, for responding to challenges with professionalism, making himself available whenever needed, and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently. His technical expertise, work ethic, reliability, and positive attitude have made a positive impact on the team.

Ed Nelson, Company Driver, Calgary, Alberta

While driving on route to a customer delivery, Ed noticed a transport truck in the adjacent lane drifting into his, and thanks to his constant attention and excellent judgment, he was able to steer clear and avoid a potentially serious collision. His actions not only protected his own safety and equipment but also helped keep others on the road safe.

WELLNESS CORNER

STROKE AWARENESS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

A stroke typically happens when a blood clot blocks a vessel in the brain, cutting off the flow of oxygen and nutrients to brain cells. In some cases, a stroke can also occur when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, causing bleeding. Both types of stroke can lead to the death of brain cells, which may result in a loss of function in the areas of the body they control.

Recognizing a Stroke: The FAST Signs

The acronym FAST summarizes the most common and reliable signs of a stroke:

Face drooping

Arm weakness

Speech difficulty

Time to call 9-1-1

These symptoms are more likely to be caused by a stroke than by other medical conditions However, strokes can also present with less common symptoms, including:

Changes in vision, such as blurred or double vision

A sudden, severe headache, often along with other signs

Numbness, especially on one side of the body

Difficulty with balance or coordination

Do All Stroke Victims Show FAST Symptoms?

Not necessarily Some people may not experience every FAST sign Even if you notice just one of these signs, it's critical to call 9-1-1 immediately Every second counts

How Can a Stroke Impact the Body?

The effects of a stroke vary widely from person to person. They can range from mild to severe and are influenced by several factors, including:

The type of stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic)

Which side and region of the brain is affected

The size of the area damaged

The body functions controlled by that brain region

How long was your blood flow interrupted

How quickly medical care was received

Reducing Your Risk

The good news is that many strokes are preventable. Nine out of ten Canadians have at least one risk factor for stroke or heart disease. Healthy lifestyle choices can prevent nearly 80% of early strokes and heart conditions. Eating a nutritious diet, staying physically active, and avoiding tobacco use, all significantly reduce your risk and protect your long-term health.
