Tonight is our first game in 2023 and also our last home game before the ‘split’, and it couldn’t get any tougher! Tonight our opponents are the very much ‘in form’ TNS – this being the re-arranged game from early December. Of the 18 games they have played, they have won 15, drawn 3 and lost 0. In their Christmas/New Year double headers against Airbus they scored a total of 15 goals without conceding; in fact their total ‘goals for’ for the season is 68 and ‘goals against’ just 6 giving them a very impressive ‘goal difference’ of 62! With the 2nd and 3rd teams in the league - Connah’s Quay and Bala - on goal differences of 20 and 22 respectively, it shows how impressive TNS’s form has been of late! So I think it can be said that we have a pretty difficult challenge ahead of us today!

Talking about recent form, Town’s run of results over the last few weeks has been pretty dire and I know it hurts us all – players, fans, Board and staff – to see the decline in our status in the League. A top 6 finish, although still possible, seems a big ask at the moment especially with TNS and Penybont as our next opponents! The loss of Dion and Fidel, two key players, who have now been out for some weeks with injuries, hasn’t helped matters and has certainly coincided with the run of poor results we’ve had. It is in tough times like these, though, we all need to stick together, keep believing and supporting the lads 100%. They know how much you the fans give to the club and will do all they can in the remaining games before the split to get back to winning ways. Although we didn’t get the result against Bala on Friday night, the statistics show that we had more of the play, created as many chances as they did, and had more corners – we now need to make all these things count!

A lot of work away from the playing field by the Chairman and members of the Board, is taking place to promote the future success of Clwb Peldroed Tref Caernarfon and my thanks go to them and the coaching staff for their continued tireless efforts and also to you the fans for all your support, even when things aren’t always going the way we want them to! Gyda’n gilydd fe lwyddwn – together we will succeed!

Gobeithio gweld nifer ohonoch yn y gêm heno – mi fyddwn yn bendant angen help y ‘12th man’ os ydym am ypsetio’r ‘odds’. Does dim yn amhosib!

Diolch am eich cefnogaeth. C’mon y Dre!

Match Report

BALA 3 0 CAERNARFON 30.12.2022

Caernarfon’s alarming run of form continued at Maes Tegid on Friday eveningbut, if truth be told, they can feel hard done by as their efforts deserved more than the eventual resultwouldsuggest. Havinglot 1-5 to their opponentsjust fourday earlier, in a match ruined byan earlysendingoff, theCofiswouldhavefelttheyhadapointtoprove againstthe Lakemen andthey started well enough, lookingconfidentas they bossed possession earlydoors.

DannyGosset saw his eighth minute effort sail over the bar whilst Joe Faux’s goalbound efforta minutelater was deflected for a corner, from which Gruff John headedoverthe target from eightyards. UnfortunatelyforCaernarfon, andhasoftenbeenthecaseof late, alapse at the back in the twenty seventh minuteresultedin a goal for the hosts, George Newell takingfull advantageof some hesitancyin dealingwith a direct ball from midfield, stickingthe ball past Tibbetts from close range. It was harsh on theCofis, asit was thehosts’ first goalboundeffortof the match, but then it is fair to say that they shouldhave dealt much better with the initial deliveryintotheirhalf.

The pattern of play remained unchanged, however, with the visitors enjoying plenty of the ball, although frustratingly for manager Huw Griffiths, his charges seemed unable to break down a solid, and deep lyingBalaside.

With neitherside creating anythingof note up front, anothermistake by Caernarfon resulted in a second goal for the hosts. The otherwise excellent Joe Faux saw his slack pass in midfield picked up by Dave Edwards and he threaded the ball to Roscrow, who saw his effort deflected past the diving Tibbetts to give Bala a two goal lead just four minutesfrom the break.

The Cofis began the second half well and again dominated possession without creating any clear cut opportunities, although two dangerous lookingeffortsby Rob HughesandBradleywere deflectedfor cornersin quicksuccession earlyon.

Hughes tested keeper Harri Lloyd on the hour mark with a long range effort that he spilled, but luckilyfor the hosts the ball endedincheswide of hislefthandupright.Llloydpulledoffadecentsavesavetwelveminute later, getting down well to keep out a Noah Edwards effort. Efforts from HughesandThomas failedto test Lloyd but he was forced

Efforts from HughesandThomas failedto test Lloyd but he was forced to make anotherfinesave lateon to thwartThomas, whoselowpiledriver hadseemed destinedfor thelow corner of hisnet.

A late penalty for the hosts, which saw Venables score, was a cruel endingto the match for Caernarfon, who can rightly feel they deserved more for their efforts.

The continuingabsenceof key men Dion Donohue and Fidel O’Rourke is a hugeblow to the Cofisbutmanager Huw Griffithswill alsoknow that his side’s regular lapses at the back and lack of nous to create the goalsCoring opportunities their overall play warranted, need to be addressed. It will be interesting to see what he can come up with to address both worryingproblems in the Januarytransferwindow.

Neges diwedd y flwyddyn gan y cadeirydd END OF YEAR MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Wrth ini agosáu at flwyddyn newydd hoffwn ddiolch i’n holl gefnogwyr, noddwyr, gwirfoddolwyr a staff am bopeth maen nhw wedi’i wneud i ni yn ystod 2022.

Bydd pawb sy’n gwybod unrhyw beth am Glwb Pêl-droed Tref Caernarfon yn gwybod ein bod yn ymfalchïo mewn bod yn glwb cymunedol yn cael ei redeg gan gefnogwyr ac rwy’n credu ei bod yn bwysig ei bod yn cael ei gwneud yn glir yn rheolaidd faint sy’n ddyledus i’n rhanddeiliaid. Heb y gefnogaeth a gawn ganddynt, ni fyddem byth yn gallu cystadlu yn haen uchaf pêl-droed Cymru a thra'n gwneud hynny, credwn hefyd ein bod yn rym er lles y gymuned.

Mae ein Hacademi, ac amrywiol brosiectau pêl-droed yn y gymuned yn darparu cyfleoedd pwysig i bobl ifanc y dref a’r ardal ac mae hon yn agwedd yr ydym yn bwriadu parhau acehangu yn y dyfodol. Fodd bynnag, mae beth bynnag a wnawn ar ac oddi ar y cae i gyd oherwydd y gefnogaeth a gawn ac felly, wrth i ni ddod â blwyddyn gyffrous arall i ben yn yr Oval, ar ran y Bwrdd, dymunaf Flwyddyn Newydd Dda ac Iach i chi gyd. Diolch am bopeth! Paul.

As we approach a new year I want to thank all our supporters, sponsors, volunteers and staff for all that they have done for us during 2022.

Everyone who knows anything about Caernarfon Town Football Club will know that we pride ourselves on being a community club run by supporters and I believe it's important that it is regularly made clear how much we owe our stakeholders. Without the support we get from them, we would never be able to compete in the top tier of Welsh football and whilst doing so, we also believe we're a force for the good in the community.

Our Academy, and various football in the community projects provide important opportunities for young people in the town and area and this is an aspect that we plan to continue and expand in the future. However, whatever we do on and off the pitch is all due to the support we receive and so, as we end another eventful year at the Oval, on behalf of the Board, I wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year. OSIAN EVANS

It was a Boxing Day to forget for Caernarfon Town as they suffered a 1-5 defeat at home to Bala.

Despite missing five regular starters, the Cofis were still able to field a good starting eleven and they started well, immediatelyon the front foot and causing the visitors plenty of problems during the opening exchanges of the match. They went ahead in the tenth minute after Rob Hughes put Darren Thomas away in the box and the playmaker plundered the ball past the onrushing Alex Ramsey, much to the delight of the Cofi Army at the Marcus Street End. Hughes and Joe Faux went close to adding a second in the space of the next five minutes but some poor marking by the hosts as they defended a corner saw Antony Kay arrive free at the back post to head past Tibbetts.

With the early action providing an exciting spectacle for the five hundred and eighty two spectators in attendance, the match turned on a harsh looking decision by referee Tom Owen, who gave Town defender Ryan Williams his marching orders after a rash challenge on Lassana Mendes. The decision all but ended the match as a spectacle as the visitors took full advantage of their superior numbers on the pitch and went ahead in the thirty fourth minute through Mendes.

Town were still trying to create opportunities to get back into the match but one of the Cofis’ mainthreats, Rob Hughes, was forced offjust before the break, making their task even more difficult.

Further goals by Luke Wall and Ollie Shannon put the game beyond the hosts and, despite attempts to make the scoreline a little more acceptable through efforts by Osian Evans and Sion Bradley, a last minute strike by James Davies proved the final, and rather harsh nail in Caernarfon’s coffin.

The sides meet again on Friday evening at Maes Tegid and Cofis manager Huw Griffiths will be hoping that a few of his absent players will return to bolster his squad to try and stop a worrying run of form.

Jon Routledge Born in Liverpool, the 26-year-old featured in the Barclays Premier League for Wigan Athletic against Portsmouth back in 2009, having began his football career at Liverpool’s famous academy. In 2010, he joined Scottish Premier League side Hamilton Academical on loan, before signing a permanent deal with The Accies, after impressing at New Douglas Park. A short spell at Stockport County followed before a move back to Hamilton six months later where he once again linked up with current Norwich City manager Alex Neil. In July 2015, Routledge signed a one-year contract with Scottish Championship side Dumbarton and went onto make 38 appearances for The Sons, before signing for TNS in May 2016.

Danny Redmond Danny Redmond was the first signing of the 2018-2019 season, joining The Saints on a free transfer from Scottish side Hamilton Academical. The 27-year-old Liverpudlian began his career in the Everton Academy, before moving to Wigan Athletic in 2009. Two years later, in January 2011, he made his debut for The Latics, coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup win at Hull City. Before leaving the club in 2014, he played a number of times, including games against AFC Bournemouth and Manchester City. Fans of the game in England may be familiar with the name Steve Redmond – who is Danny’s father – who in his own career featured in 200 plus games for the latter.

Ryan Brobbel Ryan Brobbel joined The Saints in January 2016 and is a Northern Ireland under-21 international that came through the Middlesbrough Academy. He played for York City and Hartlepool United before his move to the WPL and can play on either wing or as a number ten behind the striker.

Ben Clark A product of the TNS Academy system, teenager Clark put pen-to-paper in the summer of 2017, after impressing in last season’s U16 squad. He has already featured in the first team and shows great potential for the future.

Chris Marriott Chris Marriott joined TNS in 2009 and has established himself as the first choice left back at the club. Having graduated through the Wrexham Academy, the 2013 Manager’s Player of the Year has won six WPL titles and four FAW Welsh Cups. Marriott was voted Player’s Player of the Year 2014/15.

Blaine Hudson A towering 6’ 4” centre half, he began his career with Norwich City. Following a move to Cambridge United he then switched to the borders, where he first played for Wrexham and then Chester

Ryan Astles Beginning his career at Tranmere Rovers, in his early days Ryan was also on the books at Chester City and Wigan Athletic, as well as a second stint at Prenton Park. Welsh football fans will remember the 6′ 4″ centre-back during his time at Buckley Town and then Rhyl FC. It was then back across the border, where he played for a number of sides, including Southport FC, which was his last club before he moved to The New Saints, ahead of the 2020/2021 season.

Danny Davies Danny was the first signing of the Anthony Limbrick era, when he put pen-to-paper ahead of the 2021/22 season. Already a familiar name to fans of Welsh domestic football, Danny Davies arrived at Park Hall via Prestatyn Town and Connah’s Quay Nomads, and wears the number 22 shirt. In the JD Cymru Premier season before he joined TNS, Davies supplied the most accurate crosses and was also in the top five for chances created during games. As well as his obvious talent on the football pitch, the defender/wing-back has also played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. Like many of the players at Park Hall, he is also a keen golfer.

Connor Roberts (Goalkeeper) Wrexham-born stopper, Connor Roberts, began his professional career with Everton in 2011. Following a couple of loan moves, he switched to Cheltenham Town a year later, where he spent two seasons with the Gloucestershire club. A year with Chester was followed by a move to top flight Welsh football, when he signed for Bangor City. After establishing himself in the side, his journey then brought him to Park Hall. As well being as an integral part of the first team squad at The New Saints, Connor is also the Head Of Academy Goalkeeping. The role involves looking after our young up-and-coming ‘keepers at the club. On the international stage, Roberts has represented Wales at U-19s four times, with six appearances for the U21s. In 2014 he received a call-up to the senior squad, for the friendly against the Netherlands.

Keston Davies 22-year-old Keston signed for the Swansea City Academy at the age of 8. A move to London followed – and a spell with Fulham FC’s Academy – saw the much-rated centre-half move back to the Liberty Stadium. His Swansea City career included playing for the Under-23s at the age of 15 and captaining the Under-19s to two FAW Youth Cups. In addition, he was an integral part of the former’s 2016/2017 double-winning season, where he featured in 39 games. He also had loan spells at both Notts County and Yeovil Town, and on the national stage, Keston has played for the Wales Under-21s.

Declan McManus Joining The New Saints in June, 2021, McManus cost £60,000 as he moved from Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Championship. The 26-year-old, Glasgow-born striker, began his professional career with Aberdeen FC. Predominantly, his football has been played north of the English border, with further permanent deals at Dunfermline Athletic (twice) and Ross County, as well as several loan spells at Alloa Athletic, Falkirk, Greenock Morton and Raith Rovers.n addition, at the start of the 2015/16 season he moved to English Football League One club, Fleetwood Town, where he signed a two-year contract. On an international level, McManus has represented Scotland up to, and including, U-21s, where he played two games, against France and Iceland.

History of The New Saints FC

The New Saints of Oswestry Town play in the JD Cymru Premier, the national football league of Wales. The club is the product of a merger between Llansantffraid and Oswestry Town football clubs and immortalised on Sky TV, when presenter Jeff Stelling commented: “They’ll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions tonight!” Founded in 1860, making them one of the world’s oldest football clubs, Oswestry Town FC were also founder members of the Football Association of Wales in 1876 – a rare achievement for an English club. In their long history, they’ve competed in the Northern Premier League, Cheshire League and Cymru Alliance. Despite several successes including reaching the FA Cup first round and winning the Cheshire League, the club went into financial decline. In the late 1980s, Oswestry Town were forced to sell their Victoria Road ground to pay mounting debts and the club folded completely. The re-formed club opted for Welsh football and played in the Cymru Alliance/Welsh Premier from 1995/6 to 2003. After being initially refused entry to the League of Wales on ground criteria, Oswestry moved to the Park Hall athletics stadium and considerable improvements were carried out to reach Welsh Premier standards, although the ground was still a long way from meeting the modern standards of the Welsh Premier.

From the small Welsh village of Llansantffraid, and nicknamed the ‘Saints’, the unassuming team began life playing in the Montgomeryshire Amateur League in 1959. Here it achieved considerable success, winning numerous honours. The Montgomeryshire League Championship (1969, 1970, 1971, 1983, 1987) and the Montgomeryshire Cup competition six times between 1963 and 1976. In addition, Llansantffraid were Village Cup winners seven times, up to the nineties. In 1989/90 the club was saved from the brink of closure, with action which saw them climb through the Welsh pyramid system into the Mid-Wales League. In 1990/91 Llansantffraid were promoted to the Cymru Alliance, where they finished second and missed out on entry into the newly-formed League of Wales. Determined to progress, the club raced to the Championship just 12 months later and 1992/93 season saw Llansantffraid finish top and take their place in the League of Wales for the 1993/94 season. They were the first club to climb three rungs of the pyramid to reach the top division. In the 1997/98 season Llansanffraid changed their name to Total Network Solutions (TNS), following a lucrative sponsorship deal with an Oswestry-based computer networking specialist owned by entrepreneur Mike Harris. The partnership was working – in 1999/00 the club finally reached the pinnacle of Welsh Football when, in an exciting finale, TNS beat Barry Town to the league title and qualified for the European Cup. More success followed, with qualification in European competition becoming an annual event, including glamour ties with Manchester City (2002/03) and Liverpool (2004/05).

In 2003 the club’s phenomenal success meant the ground at Llansantffraid was no longer fit for purpose and there were no other suitable sites in the village that would sustain a full-time football club. The Chairman was forced to look for an alternative site to develop the club facilities. On 7 June 2003, it was announced that Oswestry Town was to merge with Total Network Solutions, with the aim of playing at a new stadium in Oswestry from 2005/06. The troubled Oswestry Town was saved from Bankruptcy by Mike Harris, who cleared the debts of Oswestry Town, financed the merger and made both teams part of his plan for Welsh football domination. Both sides brought something unique to the newly formed club. Llansantffraid’s success in Wales and its reputation for playing in European competition and Oswestry Town’s rich history both in England and Wales. Oswestry’s Park Hall ground could be redeveloped into a facility was a recipe for further success for Chairman Mike Harris and his vision for the future of the united team. The newly-formed team continued to play in both the green of Llansantffraid and the blue of Oswestry Town and retain both club names on the shirt. Following the sale of Total Network Solutions to BT in 2006, the club changed its name to The New Saints FC. The new name captured the spirit of both clubs – including Saint Oswald and Saint Ffraid. The club’s new crest featured the Welsh dragon and English lion present in the clubs’ previous badges. The dream was realised in 2007 when TNS played their first game at Park Hall Stadium, totally unrecognisable from the ground that Oswestry had used in their later years. Redeveloped at a cost of more than £3 million, Park Hall has a state-of-the-art 3G pitch and planning permission for 3,000 seats. It also features a major leisure development known as The Venue, with changing rooms, match officials’ rooms, function rooms, a 10 pin bowling alley, bar and catering facilities, an indoor children’s soft play area and a gym. The facilities benefit the whole of the community in its wider context creating a family entertainment facility in the heart of Oswestry which caters for all ages and abilities.
