Dim ond naw yn brin o gant o ymddangosiadau i'r clwb yw'r amddiffynnwr, sydd hefyd yn gallu chwarae yng nghanol cae, ac mae ein rheolwr Huw Griffiths yn hapus iawn gyda’r newyddion: “Mae hyn yn fwy o newyddion cyffrous i'r clwb gyda Gruff John yn ymestyn ei gytundeb tan ddiwedd 2023/24. Dw i'n edrychymlaenat weithio gyda Gruffam flwyddynarall. Gyda dau ddarn gwych o fusnes i'r clwb'Mae'ndechrau teimlo fel y Nadolig!" We are delighted to announce that Dion Donohue has extended his contract with the club for another twelve months which will see him stay at the Oval until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Our captain, who was originallywith us between 2012 and 2014, re-joined us during the summer of 2021 after spells at Chesterfield, Portsmouth, Swindon and Barrow and his performances have seen him cement his place amongst the best players in the Cymru Premier League.

Last season, Dion played in the Wales C side in their 4-0 victory over England and has again been in superb form this season.

Dion believes it’s an exciting time to be at the Oval:

“I am delighted to extend my contract for another season. The squad we have this season isvery good and I am sure that it will only get better so to be here for another season is exciting for me. I’m looking forward to helping the team push on this season for the top six and then hopefully finish the term strongly. I’m hoping we might even strengthen in January because I genuinely feel that we’re very close to those teams who qualify for Europe every season. I’m convinced there are exciting times ahead!”

Our manager, Huw Griffiths, is equally as happy as Dion with the news: “I am absolutely delighted with the news that Dion has extended his contract with us. To have such a quality player signing and committing this earlyis a massiveboost and I look forward to working with him for another year. This is an excellent early Christmas present for us!”

LOOKINGBACK

A brief look back to where Caernarfon Town FootballClub was in December2012.

Having experienced difficulttimes overa numberof seasons in the Welsh PremierLeague, the Cofis had been relegated from the top tier in 2008/9 and twelve months later they dropped into the Welsh Alliance League, the third tierof Welsh football. The club was taken overby a new board, made of supporters, and, aftera period of stability, they felt that the 2012/13 season was the one thatwould startthe club’s rise back to prominence in the game. FormerLlangefni managerLee Dixon was announced as manager, with Nigel Warren Gibbs and Nigel Barry also arriving to complete the management squad. The new management overhauled the squadduringhis firstsummerwith us andnewarrivals included NeilThomas, Dion Donohue, Lee McArdle, Kevin Roberts,Kevin Lloyd, PaulRobertsand Leigh Craven. Yws Gwynedd and Geraint Mitchell remained in the team, and over the course of the next few months, further reinforcements were signed, Paul Pritchard and Clive Williams amongst them.

The teambegan the season welland sat on top of the league as Decemberapproached.Still undefeated, they made the short trip to Glantraeth on December 1st and found that two former Cofi forwards, Gareth Davies and Ian Pleming, were a real handful on the day. Pleming set up the winner for Anthony Hughes late on in the match and Town’s unbeaten start to the campaign came to a shudderinghalt.

The team was back on Anglesey seven days later and bounced back in great style, defeating Llangefni 6-0, braces by Danny Gowans and Neil Thomas and strikes by Kevin Roberts and Lee McArdle doing the damage. Next up was a re-arranged first round Mawddach Cup match against Llandyrnog United at the Oval and, on a cold night under the floodlights, Dixon gave some fringe players a run-outand the rewarded himwith a 31 victory.

The following Saturday, December 15th saw the team host Llandudno Junction in the openinground of the CooksonCup and the Railwaymen, who had endured adifficultstart to the season, were brushed aside by the hosts, who ran out 11-1 winners. Hat-tricks for Neil Thomas and Lee McArdle were the highlights of a sparkling performance and, due to a prolonged period of bad weather, the match proved to be the last of 2012.

So, at the end of December2012 the Cofis were stillin the Mawddach and Cookson Cups, the latter of which they would go on to win courtesy of a final victory over Hollywell, and also sat proudly on top of the Welsh Alliance League, with Barmouth, Denbigh and Holywell hot on their heels. As we now know, the team eventually went on to win the league, and also added the FAW Trophy to the Cookson Cup, outplaying Kilvey Fords in the final, which they won 6-0.

Of that treble winning side, Dion Donohue and Darren Thomas remain at the club as first teamplayers.

You can read all about the 2012/13 season by buying the Oval Ways and Treble Days book, available at the club shop. All proceeds go to the club.

Caernarfon were dealta huge blow to their hopes of a top six finish at the end of the first phase as they lost to a last minute goal at Flint last night.

The hosts, who have found things difficult themselves this season, got off to a good start as they went ahead in the tenth minute courtesy of a superb Anthony Stevens goal, who found the netwith a free kick from twenty yards.

The Cofis went close to an equaliser nine minutes later when a good move upfield from their own box ended with Joe Faux crossing the ball to Danny Gosset, who was tackled justas he was aboutto shoot, the ballran to Noah Edwards and his close range effortwas deflected fora corner.

The visitors were enjoying plenty of possession, as Flint kept most of their players behind the ball to defend their lead, although it must be said that they looked dangerous on the break, with Akpa- Akpro a real threatthroughout.

Town’s man of the match, Joe Faux, was involved in most of his side’s bestmoments and a pinpointcross fromhimon the half hourmark found Darren Thomas, who could not quite manage to steer the ball into the net from six yards. Despite all their possession, Caernarfon could notmanage to getback on levelterms before the break, with Gruff John and Marsh-Hughes both going close before hal-time.

The second period began with plenty of goalmouth action, as Darren Thomas threatened with an early long range effortthatwentwide, and at the otherend Noah Edwards cleared an Akpa-Akpro headeroff the line. Sion Bradley saw his close range shot blocked whilst it was the turn of Aaron Simpson to clear off the Caernarfon line to thwartCadwallader.

Faux finally gotHuw Griffiths’ men back on parin the fifty second minute afterfinished an excellent run from his own half by beating Allen from an acute angle to level the score.

Bradley, Thomas, Gruff Jones and Danny Gosset all went close to giving Caernarfon the lead as Caernarfon continued to enjoy the lions’ share of possession but their keeper, Josh Tibbetts, had to be on his toes as Flint continued to threaten in stages. As the match entered injury time, Flint secured the points after Akpa-Akpro set up substitute Llarnell Cole, who finished into an open goal from two yards. It was a cruel end to the match for the Cofis, who will feelfrustrated thattheirefforts had not been rewarded with at least a point. They have an opportunity to end their poor run of results on Boxing Day as they host Bala Town at the Oval. Huw Griffiths will be hoping foran improved performance and a bit of luck.

Recent history of BALA TOWN FC

In 2008-09 the club finally achieved promotion to the Welsh Premier League after two 2nd place finishes. They were crowned Huws Gray Cymru Alliance League Champions without kicking a ball as their nearest rivals Holyhead Hotspur lost heavily at home to Flint Town United on the last day of the season and to rub salt in Holyhead’s wounds we beat the same opponents at Llandudno FC to secure the League Cup for an unprecedented fourth time in five seasons. The Reserves were crowned Wrexham Area Reserves Division League Champions and League Cup Winners. Over the following close season further ground improvements were undertaken with the full enclosure of the Town End, the seat and light enhancements, the construction of a Media Centre, the complete overhaul and extension of the dressing rooms, the enclosure of the referee’s room, a medical centre and the provision of a club office which enabled the club to achieve the much coveted Domestic Licence to be able to compete at the top level of Welsh football. This season was a culmination of a record of rise from the lowest depths of the Welsh Pyramid fifteen years earlier to the top league in Wales, with so much silverware won along the way – a tremendous achievement for Colin Caton and the club as a whole.

2009-10, the club’s first season in the Welsh Premier was a big learning curve and in any other season a finishing position of 11th amongst the 18 top clubs in Wales would have been a massive achievement. However the fly in the ointment was the decision by the Welsh Premier League committee to reduce the league to 12 clubs and therefore immediate relegation was seemingly inevitable – however it was deemed the feeder leagues promoted clubs were unable to reach the criteria to receive the Domestic Licence to achieve promotion and Bala Town took their place among the elite ‘Super 12’ for the 2010-11 season.

If we thought 2009-10 was a baptism of fire it was nothing compared to 2010-11 and a poor set of early results saw us fighting to remain out of the two relegation spots for most of the season. When the league split into two after the New Year we battled gamely but by the narrowest of margins finished again in 11th place (and once again in a relegation spot) but as fate would have it one of the feeder league winners was again denied a promotion spot and therefore we proudly took our place again with renewed vigour for our third season in the top league tier in Wales.

The 2011-12 season was however much better and saw further progress with the Lakesiders finishing a record 5th place in their 3rd season in the Welsh Premier League. Town didn’t drop out of the top 6 all season and cemented 5th position deservedly. They progressed into the newly formed ‘European Playoffs’ and faced Prestatyn Town in the Semi Finals. A 2-1 home win saw Colin Caton’s men reach the final where they travelled to Llanelli AFC. 90 minutes away from Europe but narrowly missed out on a European place as Andy Legg’s men won 2-1.

During this season captain Mark Jones won the Daily Post’s WPL Player of the Year award, was named in the WPL Team of the Year and scooped up the Welsh Premier League’s Player of the Year award which showed Town’s progression yet again.

Another record breaking and history making season followed in 2012-13. Colin Caton took charge of this 10th season with the Lakesiders and passed the 400 match in charge milestone in February. The campaign was very mixed as Town slipped into the Playoff Conference early on and were playing catchup for the rest of the first half of the season. After the split the Lakesiders ran away with 7th place and yet again were in the Playoff spots after a 10 match unbeaten and winning run. A 1-0 win against 8th place Connah’s Quay in the Quarter Finals and then a convincing 4-2 away win against Bangor City saw Bala back in the Playoff Final for the second succession and extend their run to 12 games unbeaten. But this time the outcome was different as a John Irving 89th minute winner against Port Talbot Town secured a European place for Bala Town for the first time in their history and finish the season with a record breaking 13 unbeaten matches.

The Europa League draw on the 24th June saw us drawn against FC Levadia Tallinn of Estonia. The European adventure into the unknown saw us win the first leg at home by one goal to nil before losing 3-1 away to go out on aggregate by 3 goals to 2. This is hopefully just the start to the next chapter for Bala Town Football Club and we can have further European matches in the forthcoming seasons. After our European adventure it was back to the 2013/14 league campaign but it was a sluggish start which saw the Lakesiders pick up only 7 points from the first 3 months of the season. The results in ‘theWord’ Cup were however solid and saw Bala secure a place in the final and also a progressive improvement in League form towards the Christmas/ New Year period. A loss on penalties in ‘theWord’ Cup saw attention full back on the second half of the league in the bottom six and pushing towards a playoff spot. Town reached the Welsh Cup Semi Final but lost 2-1 against TNS – however with Aberystwyth reaching the final and qualifying for Europe, hopes of the 7th placed finish were still alive.

Results and goals were going in Town’s favour but slipping up towards the end of the season and Aberystwyth’s domination meant the 6 point gap saw the campaign ending in 8th spot. However after Town’s slow start they still scored the 3rd highest amount of goals and conceded the 3rd least amount of goals in the league.

2014/15 saw new faces arrive at Maes Tegid with Huw Griffiths joining the Club’s management and Town’s line-up taking on a more youthful look. The season got off to a superb start with Bala firmly placed in the top three by Christmas. A successful cup run in ‘theWord’ Cup saw them finding themselves in the final for the second successive season but sadly fall to a 3 -0 defeat to TNS. By the half-season split Bala didn’t drop below 3rd position in the league as the run in to the final matches of the season approached. Going into the final match of the season, Town sat in 2nd – were 3 points ahead of Airbus in 3rd with Bala needing a point or more against TNS. Ahead of a bumper crowd a 1-1 draw saw the Lakesiders seal 2nd spot and qualifying for the Europa League for the 2nd time in their history. After a 3-1 loss away at FC Differdange of Luxembourg, it was all to do in the second leg but goals from Conall Murtagh and Ian Sheridan saw Bala take the lead but their hopes of a second round tie were dashed due to an injury time winner by Differdange. The Club broke their highest points tally (59) in the Welsh Premier and their highest ever position (2nd). All in all, the best season ever for the Club.

2015/16 was another successful campaign for the Lakesiders. A successive second place finish in the Welsh Premier League after only losing 6 WPL fixtures all season saw them secure European qualification on the final day of the season. A draw against Swedish giants AIK followed but two 2-0 losses brought the end to another Europa campaign. Unfortunately, Town had a mixed start to the 2016/17 season due to injuries, suspensions and no home ground due to the 3G pitch installation that opened in September. Knocked out of the Irn Bru Cup and League Cup early on, focus was on the League and Welsh Cup and by the end of the League split in January, Town were flying and secured a spot in the top 6. Bala’s good run continued and they finished 3rd in the WPL, only a point behind 2nd place Connah’s Quay. Meanwhile, a win against Caernarfon in the Welsh Cup Semi Final saw the Lakesiders reach a Welsh Cup Final for the first time in their history. TNS were the opponents and clear favourties but an incredible second half comeback with goals from Jordan Evans and a 86th minute header from Kieran Smith saw Town pick up the prestigious Welsh Cup trophy for the first time in their proud history and automatic qualification into the Europa League for a 4th time.

We went on to begin the 2017/18 season with our 4th Europa League adventure drawn against FC Vaduz from Liechtenstein, a Swiss Premier League outfit. We lost 2.1 at home before another 3.0 loss at the picture postcard Rheinpark Stadium deep in the Swiss Alps. Steve Fisher hosted his 10 year testimonial match at Maes Tegid v Caernarfon and Colin Caton celebrated his 15th season in charge and 600 games as Club Manager. The 2017/18 League campaign didn’t get off to the bests of starts with only 8 points on the board by the start of October. There were early exits from the League and Welsh Cup but Town had an excellent 4 months in the middle of the season which saw them seal a top 6 spot by the split and then go on to end the season in 4th place and secure another Europa Cup qualification for the 5th time.

The 2018/19 season began with a Europa draw against Tre Fiori from San Marino. We had high hopes of a first Europa Cup win but went down 3-0 in Forli in the first leg after a disastrous first 45 minutes. We won the home leg 1.0 but were disappointed with the overall outcome. During the season we suffered a Welsh Cup quarter Final defeat at home v Cardiff Met and a Nathaniel MG Cars Quarter Final defeat by Connahs Quay. A difficult League campaign saw us finish in 6th place but then lost the Europa Cup Play Off Final at home v Cardiff Met again. This time it was a dramatic penalty shoot out defeat AET finished 1-1.

Colin Caton began his 17th season in 2019/20 at the helm with over 650 matches under his belt. We suffered an early 3rd round exit from the Welsh Cup but went on to reach the Semi Final of the League Cup before losing 2-0 to Connahs Quay. Danny Gossett continued his excellent recovery from his cancer diagnosis with the Club holding fund raising events to support his cause. We were delighted to finish in 3rd place in the Welsh Premier League after a close battle all season at the top. Chris Venables was named Player of the Season in the WPL awards and he also won the Golden Boot award for league top scorer! Covid 19 terminated the season early and we were given automatic Europa Cup qualification for the 6th time.

Despite the uncertainty of the Covid pandemic the 2020/21 season began in late August and we were thrust straight into our 6th European campaign. It resulted in a stunningly sensational 1-0 win away in Valletta, Malta and sent us through a qualifying round in Europe for the very first time. We were then drawn against European giants Standard Liege of Belgium and lost only 2-0 in their magnificent stadium after after an heroic display. A really tough League season followed but a final 3rd place finish again was enough to see us qualify for Europe for the 7th time. Chris Venables wins the Golden Boot award again as top League goalscorer. There were no Cup competitions due to Covid lockdowns. Another European campaign saw Bala Town begin the 2021/22 season but despite 2 very close matches we were beaten 1-0 in both home and away legs against Larne FC from Northern Ireland. We forged some serious friendships from these 2 matches. The Club had a good run in the Nathaniel MG Cars Cup before losing the Semi Final at home 4-1 to Connahs Quay. Another brilliant run came to an end in our 5th Welsh Cup Semi Final against Penybont on a Friday night in Aberystwyth. We lost on penalties again after the match finished 0-0. Another superb run of form saw the Club secure 2nd place in the JD Cymru Premier League with a 2.0 away win at Caernarfon on 18th April and secure another Europa League qualification. Our 8th UEFA qualification in the last 10 years! Our 3rd time we have finished in Runners up spot in the Premier League.

Hoping that 2023 is the year GOBEITHIO MAI 2023 YWR FLWYDDYN

I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas Day, and that you will enjoy your visit to the Oval today. In past years of course, Boxing Day would see us play our rivals from up the road, about ten miles away, but circumstances have dictated in recent years that Bala have become our annual opponents over the festive period. It’s not quite the same of course, and no matterwhat the mediawould like us to believe, it is most certainly not a derby match by any stretch of the imagination! However, our matches do generate interestand hopefully we’llget a good crowd at the Oval today. It’s been anotherdecentyearfor Caernarfon Town Football Club, which saw us win our first trophy since our promotion to the Cymru Premier League. The Play Off win back in May seems a long way back but I’m sure it will remain in our memories fora long time. Danny’s goal, Dion’s goal thatwas ruled outfor an offside and then Laurie’s winnerin the last minute of extratime!

Winning thatmatch in any otherseason would have seenus accomplish whatwe allwant – a European tie! However, due to the historically poor co-efficiency of Welsh teams in Europe, we were notallowed to compete in Europe, and in all honesty, itwas a blow for everyone involved in the club.

We have seen how qualification can positively affect Welsh Premier League clubs, such as Newtown, Nomads and Bala, who have all benefitted from European money. It’s something that affects us every summer when talking to players we want to bring into the club. Like it or not, clubs at our level pay wages and the substantial money for qualifying forEurope makes all the difference where this is concerned.

So far, we have been lucky in that we have been able to attract good players to the Oval, helped by our crowds and the fact that we are one of the country’s biggest clubs. The fact that our manager, Huw, has so many links in the game has also helped in recent seasons. However, it’s getting more difficult every year, and this is why we are all so desperate to finally achieve our dream of a European tie. Clubs are paying some eye wateringwages and signingon fees forplayers in the CPL and we’llcontinue to find ways to compete and be in contention forone of those fourlucrative spots. Havingbeen close on so many occasions, let’s hope that2023 is the year we finally do it! We’re all workingtowards the same thing, success and European qualification, and as we approach the end of the year I want to wish all the club’s supporters and sponsors for being there for us again in 2022. Make no mistake that without you we would not be where we are now, at the top table of Welsh football. Everyone atthe Oval wishes you a Very Happy New Year! Paul. Chairman, CTFC.

Gobeithio eich bod i gyd wedicael Dydd Nadolig hyfryd, ac y byddwch yn mwynhau eich ymweliad â'r Oval heddiw. Yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf wrth gwrs, byddaiGŵylSan Steffan yn ein gweld yn chwarae ein cystadleuwyr o fyny'r ffordd, tua deng milltir i ffwrdd, ond mae amgylchiadau wedigorchymyn yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf bod Y Bala wedidod yn wrthwynebwyrblynyddoli ni dros gyfnod yrŵyl. Dydi hi ddim cweit yr un fath wrth gwrs, a dim ots beth hoffai'r cyfryngau i ni ei gredu, yn sicr nid gêm ddarbi gan unrhyw ddarn o'r dychymygydyw! Fodd bynnag, mae ein gemau yn codi diddordeb a gobeithio y cawn ni dyrfadda yn yr Oval heddiw.

Mae hi wedi bod yn flwyddyn dda arall i Glwb Pêl-droed Tref Caernarfon, a welodd ni’n ennill ein tlws cyntaf ers ein dyrchafiad i Uwch GynghrairCymru. Mae'rbuddugoliaeth yn y Play Off yn ôl ym mis Mai yn teimlo ymhellyn ôl ond rwy’n siŵr y bydd yn aros yn ein hatgofion am amser hir. Gôl Danny, gôl Dion a gafodd ei ganslo am gamsefyll ac yna enillydd Laurie yn y munud olaf o amserychwanegol!

Byddai ennill y gêm honno mewn unrhyw dymor arall wedi ein gweld yn cyflawni'r hyn yr ydymi gyd ei eisiau - gêm yn Ewrop! Ond, oherwydd cyd-effeithlonrwydd hanesyddol wael timau Cymru yn Ewrop, ni chawsom gystadlu yn Ewrop, ac a dweud y gwir, roedd hyn yn ergyd mawr i bawb oedd yn ymwneud â’rclwb. Rydym wedi gweld sut y gall yr arian yma gael effaith gadarnhaol ar glybiau Uwch Gynghrair Cymru, fel y Drenewydd, Nomads a’r Bala, sydd i gyd wedi elwa o arian Ewropeaidd. Mae’n rhywbeth sy’n effeithio arnomni bob haf wrth siarad â chwaraewyr rydyn ni'n ceisio dod i’r clwb. Hoffineu beidio, mae clybiau ar ein lefelni yn talu cyflogau ac mae'r arian sylweddol am chwarae yn Ewrop yn gwneud byd o wahaniaeth lle mae hyn yn y cwestiwn.

Hyd yn hyn, rydymwedi bod yn ffodus ein bod wedillwyddo i ddenu chwaraewyrda i’r Oval, gydachymorth ein torfeydd a’rffaith ein bod yn un o glybiau mwyaf y wlad. Mae’r ffaith fod gan ein rheolwr, Huw, gymaint o gysylltiadau yn y gêm hefyd wedihelpu yn y tymhorau diweddar. Ond, mae'n mynd yn anoddach bob blwyddyn, adynapam yr ydym i gyd mor anobeithiol i gyflawni ein breuddwyd o cyrraedd Ewrop. Mae 'na dipyn o glybiau’n talu cyflogau syfrdanoli chwaraewyryn y CPLa byddwn yn parhau i ddod o hyd i ffyrdd o gystadlu amEewrop heb gwneudhyn. Arôlbod yn agos argynifero achlysuron, gobeithio mai 2023 yw’rflwyddyn y byddwn yn ei wneud o’r diwedd! Rydyn ni i gyd yn gweithio tuag at yr un peth, llwyddiant a chymhwysterEwropeaidd, ac wrth i ni agosáu at ddiwedd y flwyddyn rydw ieisiau dymuno i holl gefnogwyranoddwyr y clwb am fod yno i ni eto yn 2022. Peidiwch â gwneud unrhyw gamgymeriad bod heb chi ni fyddaini yn bodoli ac yn lle rydyn ni nawr, ar fwrdd uchaf pêl-droed Cymru. Mae pawb yn yr Oval yn dymuno Blwyddyn Newydd Ddaichi! Paul. Cadeirydd, CTFC.
