Caernarfon Town v Pontypridd United - JD Cymru Premier - 20/08/22

Page 1

We are excited to be back at the Oval playing our first competitive home game with our opponents being newly promoted Pontypridd. New manager Andrew Stokes has added some quality experience to the squad in Luke Cummings , Clayton Green as well as Ashley Morris to what was already a strong side so we can expect this to be a very tough game. As disappointing as it was to lose our opening game of the season to Haverfordwest there were a lot of positives to take from the performance. As a group we know that last seasons home form wasn’t good enough so a big focus for us this season will go to try and improve this and make the Oval with the help of the fans a tough place to visit for any opposition.

The players have trained well this week and we have worked hard on trying to improve elements that we thought needed to be better from last week. The players as well as the management team can’t wait to be back at the oval with the support of the Cofi Army and hopefully we can give them a performance to be proud as well as taking all 3 points. I would like to finish by sending my heartfelt condolences on behalf of the players & staff to Huw and his Family on the very sad news of the passing of his Father, we are all thinking of you in these difficult times Diolch am eich Cefnogaeth #un clwb Rich

A 1-0 defeat at Haverfordwest County last Saturday will have left Huw Griffiths frustrated and determined to get his Cofis off the mark at the Oval this weekend. It was also a poor start to Pontypridd’s campaign as they lost at home to Flint Town United in their first ever game in the JD Cymru Premier. But Saturday will be an exciting occasion for the Ponty Dragons as they make their longest ever away trip in their first away game in the top-flight.

Aberystwyth Town v Cardiff Met | Saturday – 17:45 (S4C)

Caernarfon Town v Pontypridd United | Saturday – 14:30

The New Saints v Pen-y-bont | Saturday – 14:30

All goals can be viewed on Sgorio’s online accounts, and the weekend’s highlights will be on Sgorio on Monday night at 9:35 on S4C.

Which means that the Oswestry outfit have now gone five games without a win for the first time in over 20 years. Pen-y-bont had a tremendous start to their season as Rhys Kavanagh’s brace against Bala secured their first win at home since February. But Rhys Griffiths’ gang have failed to win any of their previous 12 meetings with The New Saints which includes their JD Welsh Cup final loss back in May (drawn two, lost 10).

Aberystwyth Town and Cardiff Met both enjoyed a strong start to their campaigns and will now go head-to-head live on Sgorio this Saturday. It should be an interesting battle on the sidelines between two new managers who worked closely together for many years at Cardiff Met as part of Dr Christian Edwards’ backroom staff. And in his first league game in charge for the Archers, Ryan Jenkins managed a feat that his predecessor failed to do in 18 attempts, which was to beat Connah’s Quay in a league encounter. There was also an encouraging start to Anthony Williams’ tenure as Aberystwyth Town manager with the Black & Greens becoming the first team to win a league game away at Airbus since February 2020. Cardiff Met could have the upper hand psychologically as they haven’t lost on any of their last six visits to Park Avenue (won four, drawn two).

Bala Town v Haverfordwest County | Saturday – 14:30 Following their 2nd placed finish last term, Bala Town will be disappointed to have lost 2-0 against Pen-y-bont in their first league game of the new season. There were celebrations at Bridge Meadow on Saturday as Jordan Davies’ late header against Caernarfon Town provided Tony Pennock with three points in his first league game in charge at Haverfordwest County. These two teams met three times last season and Bala Town got the better of the Bluebirds with two wins and one goalless draw.

Craig Harrison hasn’t had the perfect start to his second spell as The New Saints’ manager since a penalty shoot-out defeat to Connah’s Quay in the Nathaniel MG Cup was followed up with a 0-0 draw at Newtown last Saturday.

The pre season fixture list is always an interesting mix as every management team tries to give their side the right blend of competition as the players try to gain match fitness. Most managers are usually quite pragmatic in their approach to these fixtures, with much more importance given to the minutes given to each player rather than results. Still, it’s always nice to have a good run of results and with this in mind, the Cofis had a pretty decent set of results over the course of this summer’s friendlies.

On 29 July 2014, Ponty played a pre-season friendly against Valencia CF Mestalla, the second team of Spanish La Liga giants Valencia CF. In the run up to the game, TalkSPORT radio presenter Colin Murray picked up on news of the match as it gathered national media attention and decided to come and watch the game, inviting any of his listeners to join him. Well over 100 people from around the UK booked their flights to Valencia and spent 3 days supporting the club. Against this professional team, the club came away with a 3 0 defeat.[2] In the summer of 2015, Assistant Manager Damien Broad took over the Manager's position from his brother Dominic due to work commitments; Dominic remained as Player/Assistant Manager. On 29 July 2015, exactly a year after the Valencia game, the club repeated it's feat by securing another high profile friendly in Spain, this time against Deportivo de La Coruña.

The club was formed in 1992 after Pontypridd Sports & Social Club merged with another team, Ynysybwl. They played at Ynysangharad Park in Pontypridd .It was decided in their second season at the Park that they should be called Pontypridd Town AFC.

In January 2016 Manager Damien Broad left the club having secured a prestigious coaching role with Manchester City based in China. Dominic Broad returned as Manager and lead the club to the Division Three title, breaking the club record for most wins in a season (25) with goalkeeper Ryan Griffiths breaking the club record for most Clean Sheets (14).

In April 2006, former Cardiff City player Ryan Nicholls earned success at the first attempt as the club beat Cardiff Corries 4 1 to secure promotion for the 2006 07 season to the Welsh Football League First Division. Nicholls also took the club to round four of the Welsh Cup. Earlier in the competition, they had knocked out the Division Two and Division One champions, Pontardawe Town & Ton Pentre, as well as the biggest giant killing of the season a 1 0 home win over Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town.

The talkSPORT Trophy: On 11 May 2016, almost 1,600 supporters from around the UK gathered in Ynysangharad Park to see Ponty Town take on the talkSPORT All Stars. The brainchild of Dominic Broad and talksSPORT Radio presenter Colin Murray, the match saw a team of ex. professional footballers, other sportsmen and celebrities descended on Pontypridd in the inaugural talkSPORT Trophy. The All Stars fielded names including Danny Murphy, Dietmar Hamann, Danny Gabbidon, Simon Davies, Matthew Etherington, Micky Grey, Perry Groves, Martyn Williams, Mike Tindall, Sonny Pike, Max Rushden and Colin Murray. The club won the game 3 1 with goals from Luke Gullick, Scott Hillman and Omar Abdillahi, with a consolation penalty coming in the last minute for the AllStars' Micky Grey. After a successful 2015–16 season, the club sealed the Welsh Football League Division Three title in May 2016 after a 2 0 victory away at Tredegar Town. After their title winning season, the club made several changes in the management team in their fierst season back in the Welsh Football League Division Two. Damien Broad returned in a Head Coach role at the club and alongside spending his days working at Bristol City's prestigious youth academy, whilst Welsh League veteran Phil Clay came in to replace Sam Houldsworth as Assistant Manager. The Football Association of Wales were introducing the new Tier 2 Ground regulations for the 2018 19 season and Pontypridd Town's Ynysangharad Park did not comply with the new standards. After exploring a number of ground options with various parties including the local authority and Pontypridd RFC, the club approached the University of South Wales (USW) about the use of their Sports Campus on Treforest Industrial Estate and proceeded to use these facilities from the start of the 2017 18 campaign.

The club under Dom and Damien Broad had a tremendous season and obtained promotion to Welsh Football League Division One as runners up as well as getting to the fourth round of the Welsh Cup (eliminated by Penydarren BGC, then of the South Wales Alliance League). Unfortunately the new University of South Wales Tier 2 level facility was held up which meant the club either had to turn down promotion or find a ground share at a Tier 2 ground. After being turned down by Merthyr Town, Cambrian & Clydach and Ystrad Mynach Sports Centre, the club were helped by the Cardiff Athletic Stadium to start their season in the First Division after an FAW appeal. Due to excessive wear of the new surface at the Stadium the club had to find another ground after playing half the season there. Aberdare Town gave the club permission to play at their Aberaman Park tier 2 ground for the remainder of the season. The club appointed Lee Kendall as their new Manager with eleven games to go to the end of the season to replace the Broad brothers who left due to personal reasons. Kendall is a fully qualified 'A' licence coach both for outfield players as well as goalkeepers. Kendall left The Dragons at the end of the 2018 19 season. His assistant, Jonathan Jones, was appointed as his successor for the inaugural Cymru South campaign. The club finished as runners-up in the 2021 22 Cymru South season and were promoted to the Cymru Premier after champions Llantwit Major were not awarded Tier 1 status by the Football Association of Wales.[3] Jones resigned as manager at the end of the season.[4] The club was renamed from Pontypridd Town to Pontypridd United in June 2022, prior to the club's first season in the Cymru Premier Hanes Pontypridd United / History of Pontypridd United

The team manager for the 2007 08 season was Mal Camilleri but after the club's successive relegations down to Division Three, the club was on the brink of collapse. Discussions between Pontypridd Town and Treforest began. At the 11th hour, the club received support from local businessman Clayton Jones and was saved. In 2009 Cardiff businessman Phil Gibb joined the club and Allan Davies was appointed as Manager. Davies was an experienced defender who also coached at Graig FC in 2008 and previously spent ten years at Burton Albion where he played under Nigel Clough. In the 2010–11 season, the team started erratically, but from January they lost just two out of 20 games and they were on top of the table for more than two months. In the last week of the season, although they won the last game, they missed out on promotion to Division 2 on goal difference. The 2013 14 season started with a change of management. Dominic Broad was appointed Manager, bringing in his brother Damien Broad as his Assistant Manager and Sam Houldsworth as First Team Coach. A week before the season started the club only had only 2 signed players, the others having followed Allan Davies out of the club. They quickly set about signing enough players to field a team for the first match and set themselves the target of maintaining Welsh League status, which they achieved by finishing 15th that year.

The club wishes to thank Sam Eaden for his excellent work as our official photographer last season. Sam, who hails from Barnsley and is a student at Bangor University, approached the club during the tail end of the 2020/21 season and offered his services as our photographer. We accepted and were extremely pleased with the work he carried out for us. His fantastic photographs soon saw Sam being offered work by other clubs in the Welsh system and he is now very much in demand in the Cymru Premier Leagues. Due to other commitments Sam has decided that he will no longer be able to continue his role with us and we wish him the very best with both his Sports Science course at Uni and photography. KUBA Fabio Murtas Cai Griffiths STEPPINGUP!

Caernarfon Town has had our fair share of decent goalkeepers. From the legendary Russ Hughes in the eighties, to Paul Pritchard and Alex Ramsay in recent years, it’s fair to say that we’ve had some pretty good number ones at the club. When Josh Tibbetts joined us for the 2020/21 season, most supporters will have believed we had found another top class performer between the sticks, someone who we’d look forward to seeing for a few years at the Oval. There can be no doubt that Josh proved himself to be a top quality performer for us but, after an excellent first few months in our shirt, he suffered a long term injury and so it was that our manager Huw was faced with the difficult task of bringing in another quality stopper to the club for the 2021/22 season.

Our Under 19’s side play in the Cymru Premier Development League and, after a fine season, they finished last term in third position, behind full time academies The New Saints and Connahs Quay Nomads. The young Cofis impressed with their style of football and had led the table for most of the season, until the final run in. With most of the side having another two years in the same age category, the future looks bright for the team and, with a bit of luck, we hope to be seeing a few of the squad making the step up into the first team. Gwion Thomas was one who shone for the under 19’s last season and also played a few matches for the first eleven, which has resulted in him recently joining The New Saints. With first team assistant manager Richard Davies having coached the youngsters last season, Huw Griffiths is aware of the potential within the Academy and this summer two members of the under 19’s squad have featured for the first team in our pre season schedule. Both Cai Griffiths and Fabio Murtas have done well when called upon in the friendlies and it seems we may be seeing a lot more of them in the future. Of course, they’re not the only prospects in the Academy and, if all goes to plan, we may well be seeing plenty more of our youngsters making the step up in the Iffuture.youget the opportunity to watch the development side play this season, make an effort to do so, as they’re worth seeing!

The usual rumour mill was awash with names of keepers he might be looking at but no one would have guessed that our manager was preparing a deal with Liverpool Football Club to bring eighteen year old Jakub (Kuba) Ojrzynski to the Oval on a season’s loan. The six foot four inch Polish under 19 international had just signed a five year deal at Anfield and the Reds were looking to give him first team experience at senior level and it was an opportunity that we could not pass on! Jakub made his debut for us in our first pre season friendly at Holwell last Summer and he soon showed why Liverpool had offered him such a long contract! Josh seemed to grow with every match and after a few fixtures, we all knew that we were in safe hands. Quiet, and unassuming, Jakub was as professional as you would expect from a professional footballer and of course, he enjoyed an excellent season with us. This summer, Liverpool announced that Jakub had signed for Radomiak Radom, who play in the Ekstraklasa, the top level of football in Poland. We know you will join us in wishing Kuba the very best of luck in the future!

For once, it’s been a quiet summer for Caernarfon Town in the transfer market. The summers of 2020 and 2021 saw us overhaul the first team squad as we looked to replace a number of departures from the club. Huw Griffiths showed during both off seasons that he has plenty of avenues open to him in search of new players, and he did so successfully, as the side reached the 2020/21 play off final and went one better last season by winning it after finishing the campaign in fourth position.

Huw had made it clear as last season reached its climax that he was not looking to change much squad wise this summer and he has remained true to his word. At the time of writing (3/8/22) we have only added three players to the squad, and the first of the summer was Ben Wynne. He is someone that many may not have heard of but Huw has seen enough to know that the youngster can improve the team: “I’veseen Ben play a few times and he’s a bit like Joe Faux. He’s quick, and direct. He can play up front, as a ten and on the wings so he gives us plenty of options. He’ll give us plenty of pace and will look to run behind the defence. He had a very good second half of the season for Aberystwyth and I’m excited to see how he develops with us.”

The twenty year old is a former member of the Steven Gerrard Academy and joined Druids in 2021 before moving on to Aberystwyth. Ben is already looking forward to playing in front of the supporters: “I’mreally excited for this new chapter to begin in my career. I’mlooking forward to getting startedandto play in front of the Cofi Army.”

JD Cymru Premier—Matchday 1

Caernarfon began their Cymru Premier League campaign on Saturday with the long trip to Pembrokeshire, where they took Haverfordweston County at the Bridge Meadow Stadium. The Cofis were without injured captain Dion Donohue and the suspended Aaron Simpson but otherwise, manager Huw Griffiths had a full squad to choose from.

The hosts started brightly and Jack Wilson forced Josh Tibbetts into smart saves in the third and sixth minutes. Caernarfon’s first effort on goal fell to Sion Bradley who got on the end of a Joe Faux cross, but he saw his first time attempt blocked and deflected over the bar from ten yards. Tibbetts came to the Cofis’ rescue again in the twenty fourth minute as he dived full stretch to his left to thwart a Ben Fawcett drive. Ten minutes later it was the turn of Noah Edwards to see a goalbound strike blocked by a County defender and Tibbetts was soon forced into another excellent save, when he pulled of a reflex save to deny a certain goal for Fawcett. The hosts continued to dominate in the second period and Jenkins, Davies and Fawcett all went close to opening the scoring for them within a four minute spell early on. Caernarfon, despite not being able to enjoy much by way of going forward were resolute and determined at the back and they seemed content to try and hold on for a point. Unfortunately, with ten minutes remaining their defence was finally breached when a Henry Jones cross was met at the far post by Jordan Davies, and the former Prestatyn forward headed past Tibbetts to clinch the points. The match was played in sweltering heat and both sides should be commended for their efforts in difficult conditions. Town manager Huw Griffiths will be encouraged by side’s stubbornness and work rate in defence but will also know that the Cofis need to provide more of an attacking threat if they are to enjoy another good season in the Cymru Premier League.
