Fide O’Rourke has enjoyed an excellent start to his season long loan with us, and the Liverpool forward has been in high demand by the press, both in Wales and on Merseyside, and recent interviews of his have appeared on the Welsh Premier League and Liverpool Echo websites and we are pleased to share the one he did with Oly Allen for the WPL. With thanks to Olly for giving us permission to reproduce the interview here……
Caernarfon Town forward Fidel O’Rourke hopes to continue his rich goalscoring form in the JD Cymru Premier following an impressive start to the season. The 20 year old is spending the campaign at The Oval on loan from English Premier League side Liverpool as he makes his first steps in senior football. “The opportunity to get regular game time in a first team environment was big for me,” O’Rourke says. “Jakub Ojrzynski was on loan at Caernarfon last season and he said it was a good place to go with great fans. I wanted to test myself and see what I could do in a new league.”
So far, O’Rourke is passing that test. He has five goals in eight league matches only five players in the division have netted more. “It’s been a great experience so far,” the youngster says. “It is nice to be scoring goals and hopefully I can carry on doing that. I feel that I have adapted pretty well.
“I would always like to score more goals than I do, but hopefully if I keep getting chances then I will score more than I miss! The players around me are very good and they are always helping me to develop.”
One such player is captain Dion Donohue, who provides English Football League experience to the Caernarfon side. “Dion is very commanding and you can tell that he is a leader,” O’Rourke says. He pauses and then describes Donohue in a way only a Scouse native can: “He’s boss.”
Arguably O’Rourke’s stand out goal in a Caernarfon shirt so far was his bicycle kick in the 2 1 win over Aberystwyth Town last month and his smile widens while discussing the moment of magic. “The ball came into the box but I was facing away from goal. I heard a shout from someone to lay it off, but it was in my mind and I just thought ‘I’m hitting it’. I knew I was close enough to the goal for it to go in if I put it on target and thankfully it did. Sometimes that kind of shot isn’t the best option, but it was there to be hit. It was amazing to be able to do it.”
O’Rourke’s performances earned him a nomination for the JD Cymru Premier Player of the Month award for October and the forward narrowly missed out on the accolade to a player he knows personally.
FIDEL O’ROURKE
“Andy Firth, who ended up winning it, was actually that one who told me that I had been nominated,” O’Rourke recalls. “I was surprised because I didn’t expect it. I know Andy, he is a great goalkeeper and a great lad. It was a nice feeling to be recognised and hopefully if I keep on playing well then I can be nominated again.”
O’Rourke is certainly not resting on his laurels and made clear his ambitions for the rest of his loan spell at The Oval.
“As a team, we want to be finishing in the top four. For me, I would like to get into double digits for goals before the end of the year and just keep on playing as well as I can.”
The forward is aiming high in the long term too and hopes to one day make a first team appearance for parent club Liverpool, who he isa lifelongfan of. O’Rourke a former Reds under 18s captain – has been in the club’s academy since under-14 level and continues to train at Kirkby during the week.
“For me, Liverpool are the best team in the world,” he smiles. “I’m from Liverpool and I have grown up supporting the club so it would be a dreamto play in the first team. I know it willbe hard but you have to set your goals high to be able to have a good career.”

With the last of qualifying rounds of the World Cup coming to an end today it’s time to turn our thoughts back to Caernarfon Town and the Cymru Premier League. Before I do that though, I’d like to express my thanks to Rob Page and the whole of the Welsh squad what they achieved in reaching the World Cup is enormous. Perhaps the results in Qatar were not as good as we’d dreamt and hoped for, and even though Cymru didn’t get through the qualifying round, we have to remember the progress that has been made in Welsh football and to be proud of the fact that we got to the World Cup Finals for the first time in 64 years superb. Diolch yn
rwan.
So, back to tonight and our first game at The Oval since the beginning of Novemberthe results against TNS in the Cup and Connah’s Quay in the league, two of the best sides in the Cymru Premier, were not what we wanted but the performances on both occasions show the quality we have in the squad. I think, going into the game at the Deeside Stadium against Connah’s Quay, most of us would have accepted a point, but having taken an emphatic 3-0 lead over our opponents to only come away with a point was tough to take and felt more like a loss. In retrospect though, it’s important for us to take the positives from the game and know that Caernarfon Town are well able to compete with, and cause problems for, the top teams!
Tonight our opponents are Newtown. We’ve not recorded a win against The Robins in our last five outings – our aim tonight therefore has to be to put an end to this statistic! Although they’ve not had the best season so far, we’re not underestimating the challenge facing us. Newtown have spent their European money wisely and have amassed a quality squad so we will have to be at our very best tonight to get something out of tonight’s game. We will definitely need the support of the Cofi Army I hope you will come out in full force and in good voice (if you’ve any left after cheering on Cymru!)
Edrych ymlaen at y gêm yn erbyn y Drenewydd heno ac i weld a chlywed gymaint â phosib ohonoch ar Yr Oval! Mae’n hen bryd inni gael buddugoliaeth yn erbyn y tîm yma byddwn yn mynd amdani! C’mon y Dre!
Diolch am eich cefnogaeth. C’mon y Dre!
fawr iawn Rob Page a’r hogie de ni’n falch iawn o bob un ohonoch ac yn edrych ymlaen at yr ymgyrch(ion) nesaf

Match Report
Connahs Quay Nomads 3 3 CAERNARFON 18.11.2022
A share of the spoils at the Deeside Stadium is usuallyan excellent result for any team. However, having outplayed the hosts for long periodsonFridayevening,Caernarfonweredisappointedtosuccumb to a lateaerial bombardmentthat eventuallysawtheNomads salvage a point in injurytime.
Town manager Huw Griffiths had insisted before the match that his players were good enoughtohaltthehosts’ run of eleven successive victories and they certainly seemed to start full of confidence,Gruff Johnalmost puttingtheCofisaheadin thesecondhalf, hisstrikefrom twenty yards just inchestoohigh of thetarget.
Caernarfon continued their good start by playing through their opponentsand lookingdangerousup front, where Nomads seemed to strugglewith the pave of O’RourkeandMarch-Hughes.
Town took control of the match courtesy of a tenth minuteopener,as Fidel O’Rourke got on the end of a Sion Bradley corner andheaded in at the far post. Joe Faux went close to adding a second just five minuteslater but hiseffort twentyfive yard effort flew over thebar. The Nomads had originally tried the play football at the back but Town’squickstart saw themrevert tonorm astheypushedcentrehalf George Horan up front, which resulted in a much more direct approach as theylooked to bypass midfield.
The changein tactics seemed to work initiallyas they started getting the ball into Town’s penalty area andHoran hit the woodwork with a headerin thenineteenthminute.TownkeeperJosh Tibbetts was then forced to tip over a Michael Wildeheaderbeforethen doingthesame to thwart an effort from Ryan Stratulis.
However, Caernarfon weathered the storm and, for the final third of the first half, they seemed thelikeliestto score. Followingaperiod of pressurefrom theCofis,O’Rourkewasfrustrated to see hisshotfrom close range deflected off a defender for a corner, from which Aaron Simpson headedwide with the goal at hismercy. O’Rourke threatened

The visitors were back on the front foot early after the restart and, followingan excellentmove in the fiftieth minuteinvolvingGruff John, O’RourkeandMarsh-Hughes,JoeFauxpickedtheball upon theright flank, cutinsidehismanandcurledalow effortbeyondthedivingAndy Firth and intothe far corner of hisnet.
Town went three ahead in the sixty fifth minuteafter Bradley’s cross from the left was half cleared by a defender and Marsh-Hugheswas on handto headpast Firth from close range.
Shell shocked from finding themselves three behind, the incessant aerial bombardment increasedas the hosts lumpedball after ball into theCaernarfon box. They were rewarded with aNash goal in the sixty ninth minute and set up a dramatic final quarter when Joe Malkin glanceda headerpast Tibbetts to pull thehosts just a goal behind.
A combination of good defending and two good saves from Tibbetts seemed to havesecuredall three pointsforthe visitors but, with injury time in its fifth minute,Caernarfonstruggledtodeal with anothercross into their six yard box, and Malkin scored from a yard out to denythe Cofisthe victory.

(2000-I heddiw)
The History of Newtown AFC (2000present day)
Brian Coyne departed in 2003 and was replaced by Roger Preece, who produced three mid table finishes before being replaced by Darren Ryan. The former Barry Town midfielder helped Newtown survive relegation by four points, and then just survived in 2010, with the league being reduced to 12.
Ryan left with ex TNS boss Andy Cale guided Newtown to a 9th place finished in 2010/11, before he left and Ryan returned. It was for just 17 days though as he left to join Northwich Victoria as assistant manager. Former West Bromwich Albion and Shrewsbury Town man Bernie McNally was appointed the new boss.
In his first season he guided Newtown to the League Cup final, however in the league the Robins finished rocked bottom and looked to be heading down. However due to technical issues, Rhyl were relegated and the Robins were given a reprieve. The following season, the Robins survived on the final day of the season thanks to 2-0 win at Connahs Quay. Fortunes turned for the Robins the following season, as they enjoyed three straight wins in October before McNally announced he was heading to Shrewsbury as Head of Youth.
The club turned to Prestatyn Town assistant and former assistant at Caersws, Chris Hughes to take over the reins. His first season saw the Robins qualify for the top six for the very first time, before losing to Bangor City in the play offs. It was his first full season for the club, in 2014/15 which was arguably the most successful in the club’s career. Another top six finish was achieved, and the Robins reached the Welsh Cup final for the first time in over 100 years. They hosted the final after an agreement was made with opponents TNS, who eventually ran out 2-0 winners in front of 1,400 people at Latham Park.
The season wasn’t finished their though, as a 120th minute winner from Luke Boundford in the play off semi final at Port Talbot kept the club’s European dream alive. Tom Goodwin and Matt Hearsey then scored in the play off final at Aberystwyth Town, to earn the Robins their first European appearance in more than 15 years.
They drew Maltese club Valletta, and despite being massive underdogs the Robins won the first leg, their first in Europe. Boundford scored the opener early on in front of a packed Latham Park, before Valletta levelled in the second. However in stoppage time striker Jason Oswell poked home a cross to give Newtown a first leg advantage. The second leg was equally brilliant, as a band of around 80 Newtown fans travelled to the Maltese capital to witness history. Oswell scored early on, before Malta pulled one back. Matty Cook was given a red card, before Matty Owen saw a penalty saved. But he made up for it with a late goal to seal the Robins passage to the second qualifying round and a date with Danish giants FC Copenhagen. In the Parken Stadium, Newtown went down just 2 0 to a side who had faced giants Manchester United and Barcelona in recent years. A 3 1 defeat at home followed in front of another sell out crowd, with Tom Goodwin scoring the only Robins goal.
Play-off defeats to Airbus and Bangor City followed in the following years, before the Robins failed to qualify in the 2017/18 season. However in that year, Hughes guided them to a League Cup semi times they missed out on silverware.
