The Cymru Premier League has now finished for the season and 4th position for Caernarfon, equalling the Club’s best ever finish, is no mean feat and one to celebrate and to be very proud of. This season just the three teams – TNS, Bala and Newtown - who finished ahead of Town are the ones who qualify for Europe. Indeed they are the same three teams that qualified for Europe last season and who have obviously benefitted from, and used wisely, the huge cash bonus the qualification brings. Caernarfon Town have been very, very close to gaining a European spot these past 2 years and qualification for Europe has to remain Caernarfon Town’s ultimate goal so that we too can not only benefit from the financial gain it provides, but most importantly gain the prestige this very special Club and its superb fans deserve.

Although the League has now finished, Town’s season continues with a semi-final play off game today to qualify for a place in the SPFL Trust trophy competition. Our opponents are Cardiff Met who finished 7th to our 6th place at the end of the First Phase and so a good close encounter can be expected. This season is Christian Edwards’ last season as Manager of Cardiff Met and I would personally like to thank him for his friendship over the years and to wish him all the very best for the future. I have the utmost respect for Christian not only as a person but also for the amazing job he has done with his team over the years. Friendships etc aside though, I can assure you the lads will be doing their utmost to bring Christian’s era as manager to an end at the Oval this afternoon and to qualify for a place in next week’s final!

The New Saints have already qualified for next season’s Scottish Challenge Cup after winning the league title.

In recent years the prize for winning the play-offs has been a place in the Europa League qualifiers, but since Wales has lost a spot in Europe for the coming season, the reward has had to be altered.

Its looking likely that this year’s format will be a one-off occurrence as Wales are set to reclaim their 4th European ticket for next year.

Flint Town United (5th) v Pen-y-bont (6th) | Saturday – 14:30 A 3-2 defeat at the hands of The New Saints in last weekend’s JD Welsh Cup final meant that Pen-y-bont’s efforts of European football came to a disappointing end.

But Pen-y-bont could yet claim a place in next season’s Scottish Challenge Cup, which would be a silver lining on a campaign which has fizzled out after a promising start.

Flint Town United will be standing in their way, a team that’s won three of their four league meetings with Pen-y-bont this season and drawing the other encounter.

The Silkmen picked up 10 points against Pen-y-bont this season, which was 24% of their total point tally of 42.

Neil Gibson’s gang have had a week to prepare for the semi-final following their 1-1 draw with Newtown, while Pen-y-bont fell to their eighth consecutive defeat in the cup final on Sunday.

Caernarfon Town (4th) v Cardiff Met (7th) | Saturday – 17:15 It’s been three years since Cardiff Met won 3-2 at the Oval in the play-off semi-final, before beating Bala Town in the final to secure their place in Europe for the first and only time in their history.

Since that victory, these two teams have met six times with Caernarfon Town winning five of those fixtures.

Of the four clubs competing this year, Cardiff Met are the only team who have experience of winning the JD Cymru Premier play-offs.

This will be Caernarfon Town’s third appearance in the JD Cymru Premier play-offs with the Cofis losing at home in both previous attempts (vs Cardiff Met and Newtown).

After 13 years at the club, Cardiff Met manager, Dr Christian Edwards has announced that he will leave his role at the end of the season, and the Cofis will want to make sure that Saturday’s match will be his last with the students.

The Club obtains Domestic and UEFA licences We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded both the Domestic and UEFA Licences for the 2022/23 season.

We wish to thank everyone who has worked hard throughout the club to ensure that we have met all the requirements, from the Academy, all players and staff, all our match day volunteers and especially to our licensing officer, Marc Roberts, for ensuring that everything was in order and that the application was completed in a correct and timely fashion.

Obtaining the Domestic licence secures our place in the Cymru Premier League for next season whilst the UEFA Licence will enable us to play in Europe should we qualify at the end of this campaign.

JD CYMRU PREMIER MANAGER AND PLAYER OF THE MONTH SHORTLIST FOR APRIL The shortlist for April's Player and Manager of the Month awards in the JD Cymru Leagues has been confirmed. The fans' vote will be combined with a league and independent voting panel to determine the winners.

Manager of the Month Colin Caton - Bala Town Colin Caton guided Bala Town to five wins out of their six games in April. The Lakesiders began the month with a 5-0 away win over Penybont and then played out a 1-1 draw with champions The New Saints. Caton's side also earned four consecutive wins against Newtown, Caernarfon Town, Flint Town United and Penybont, with the latter two coming away from home.

Anthony Limbrick - The New Saints April saw Anthony Limbrick also guide The New Saints to five wins out of six. The Saints started with a 3-0 away win over Caernarfon Town before the 1-1 draw with Bala. Limbrick's side also earned four straight victories over Flint Town United, Caernarfon Town, Penybont and Newtown, with the latter two coming on the road.

Craig Harrison - Connah's Quay Nomads Connah's Quay Nomads went unbeaten in April as they claimed four wins and two draws. Craig Harrison's side started the month with a home win over Aberystwyth Town and an away victory against Cefn Druids, before playing out a 1-1 draw with Barry Town United. The Nomads then put together back-to-back wins on home soil against Cardiff Met and Haverfordwest, and finished the campaign with a 1-1 draw away against Aberystwyth Town.

Player of the Month Ryan Astles - The New Saints Ryan Astles kept three clean sheets against Caernarfon Town, Flint Town United and Newtown in April as The New Saints signed off the campaign with an impressive set of results. The defender was a consistent figure for Anthony Limbrick's side and also got on the scoresheet against Caernarfon.

Will Evans - Bala Town Will Evans helped Bala Town enjoy an unbeaten April by playing a key part in the Lakesiders earning five wins and a draw. Evans scored a hat-trick against Penybont in the opening game of the month, got on the scoresheet against Caernarfon Town and again during the reverse fixture against Penybont.

Byron Harrison - Connah's Quay Nomads Byron Harrison scored in three of the five games he featured in throughout April as the Nomads went the month unbeaten. Harrison found the net in three consecutive games against Cefn Druids, Barry Town United and Cardiff Met, while he also provided an assist in the latter.

Lifumpa Mwandwe - Newtown Lifumpa Mwandwe has enjoyed an impressive campaign with Newtown and added another two goals to his tally in April. He ensured there would be no way back for Penybont by scoring the second in a 2-0 victory and also bagged the winner against Caernarfon Town, helping the Robins seal third in the JD Cymru Premier table.

This year’s theme celebrates the return of fans after stadiums reopened after the suspension of live sport.

CARDIFF MET UNI FC — PEN PICS 2021/22 Kyle McCarthy Position: LB/CB/CM/LW/CAM (not sure anymore?) Age: 26 Number: 3 A large part of Kyle's junior football days, was spent at Cardiff City FC Academy travelling up and down the country playing against other respective Premier League academy teams on a weekly basis. Having been released prior to a scholarship opportunity at the club, Kyle pursued youth team football and further education at Hereford United FC. This stint included a season on the side-lines after fracturing his leg, followed by a national call up to represent Wales at the u19’s Euro qualifiers. Additionally, a short period of time was spent as a professional at the club, before entering higher academia at the capital’s school of sport. Currently employed as a Sport Development Officer on behalf of Cardiff Metropolitan University (Sport Cardiff). Has been fortunate to win promotion at every level of the Welsh pyramid, a league cup and more recently, European qualification.

Emlyn Lewis Position: Centre Half Age: 22 Number: 5 At the age of 16 Emlyn decided to commit to Football where he spent his first senior season at Penrhyncoch FC in the Cymru Alliance. Following this he moved to the capital at 18, to Cardiff Met. 5 years on, and he is still here having completed an Undergraduate Degree and a Masters Degree in Sport Coaching. Also, Emlyn coaches the Development team which has widened his experience and understanding of the game. The highlight of his footballing career thus far has been representing the Wales C team vs England C in March 2019.

Will Fuller Position: Goalkeeper Age: 25 Number: 1 Has been at the club since 2011, helping the club to progress from Welsh Division 3 to the Europa League over the last 8 seasons. Born in Ipswich and released by the club aged 16, Will joined Salisbury City for a two-year youth scholarship before moving to Cardiff to continue his studies. Now works as the Training & Development Manager for Hospital Innovations, the UK’s leading private human tissue provider.

Brad Woolridge Position: Centre Back Age: 26 Number: 4 At 16 Brad began playing senior football for Heath Hayes FC in the Midland Alliance, where he played for 2 years prior to moving down to Cardiff to study for a sport science undergraduate degree in 2011. The move to Cardiff combined both his studies and footballing commitments. Brad has captained the side for the last 5 seasons and plays a large part in the success we’ve had.

CARDIFF MET UNI FC — PEN PICS 2021/22 Eliot Evans Position: Midfield Age: 27 Number 7 Having failed to gain a YTS contract after a spell at Bristol City FC academy prior to leaving school, Eliot came through a college programme run in conjunction with the club that combined a full-time football schedule with full-time education. At 18 years old he decided to pursue a degree in Sport and Exercise Science at Cardiff Metropolitan University (formerly UWIC). He signed for the football club in Welsh Division Three and began an association with the club that has lasted until now. Upon graduating, Eliot joined Monmouth Town FC in Welsh Division One for two seasons. After deciding to return to education by starting a postgraduate degree at Cardiff Met, he re-joined the club in 2015 and is now going into his eighth season at the club which has involved success in the Welsh leagues and BUCS University leagues.

Chris Baker Position: Centre midfield Age: 25 Number: 8 Spent most of his childhood playing within Swansea City’s youth academy, where he was fortunate to play against the likes of Juventus and Ajax, his release culminated in a return to education. Following two years at Gower College Swansea, where he was part of Welsh and British Cup winning squads, he moved to the capital to study for his undergraduate degree. Chris is going into his sixth season with the University’s football team. During that time, Chris has been fortunate to win promotion, a league cup, the BUCS championship and European qualification.

Charlie Corsby Position: Central Midfielder Age: 27 Number: 10 Charlie is currently a Lecturer in Sports Coaching at the Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences, Cardiff Metropolitan University. Originally from Bournemouth, he began a semi-professional playing career at Brockenhurst FC. He moved to Cardiff to study BSc Sports Coaching and continue my playing career at Cardiff Met FC (formerly UWIC). Moving into his tenth year at the club, he has been involved in the team’s success winning Welsh Division Three, Welsh Division Two, Welsh Division One and, more recently, the Nathaniel MG Cup. Hanes Clwb Peldroed Met Caerdydd The History of Cardiff Met FC Cardiff Metropolitan University was formed in1951 as Cardiff Training College, playing in the local leagues. In 1964 the club took advantage of the re-organisation of the Welsh Football League to win a place in the bottom division. Under the gifted leadership of Stuart Griffiths, they became a nursery for future caps at amateur level, while Dai Davies and David Williams went on to win international honours at the highest level. During this ‘golden age’ the club appeared in six national cup finals between 1968 and 1976, twice winning the Welsh Amateur Cup and on one occasion the Welsh Intermediate Cup. In 1975 they won promotion to Division One and the following season they were champions and promoted to the Premier Division. The students had gained a reputation for playing attractive football, but already the strains of playing outside academic terms were obvious and they were relegated in 1979. In 1990, the whims of academia demanded that they change their name again, this time to Cardiff Institute of Higher Education, but the new title did not guarantee a brighter future and two years later the club found itself back in the bottom division. Fortunately, Norman Dawkins, a former student and Welsh amateur cap, joined the staff and virtually single-handed he pulled the club together on and of the field. In 1996 the institute changed its name to University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, and this time a change of fortune was evident as within two seasons they were back in the top division, winning the Welsh League Cup in 1999.

In 2000-01 another Cardiff club, Inter Cardiff, were encountering financial difficulties in the League of Wales, and UWIC bailed out the club by merging their resources.

The club, playing as UWIC Inter Cardiff, survived a difficult season, but could not financially sustain a semi-professional squad and, reverting to a student base, they were relegated in the following year.

The club, quietly shedding the ‘Inter Cardiff’ appendage, enjoyed some successful years in the Welsh League’s top tier and in 2003-04 reached the Welsh Cup quarter -finals. But a student team always suffers from an annual turnover of its playing squad and in 2007 UWIC were relegated to the second division.

In 2009, UWIC appointed ex-Welsh international Christian Edwards – now a postgraduate student – to regenerate the football programme. Despite a mid-table finish, the controversial restructuring of the league left the club unable to avoid being placed in Division 3, but the team showed its true potential with a run to the Welsh Cup quarter-finals and a prolonged challenge for promotion.

In 2011 UWIC formally ended its association with the University of Wales and became Cardiff Metropolitan University, and in turn the club changed its name to Cardiff Metropolitan University FC.

CAERNARFON TOWN FC PEN PICS 2021/22 1 – Jakub Ojrzynski (Goalkeeper) A 19-year-old Polish national, Kuba signed for the Canaries during the Summer of 2021 on loan from Liverpool FC. He is regarded as an excellent prospect by LFC and he has been a regular starter in the Under 23 level and was on the bench for the first team on several occasions last season.

4 - Gruffydd John (Defender) Signed by the Canaries from CPD Porthmadog during the Summer of 2019. Very talented young central defender who will be a valuable addition to the squad. Previously played for Llanrug United in the Welsh Alliance and was also a Welsh Schools international. Played a pivotal role in Town’s defence last season and is certain to feature regularly this season.

2 – Iwan Cartwright (Defender) Iwan signed for the Canaries during the summer of 2021 from Cefn Druids AFC. His previous clubs include Newtown AFC, Nuneaton, Wrexham and Hednesford. Looking to establish himself at right back this season.

5 – Steven Evans (Defender) Steven signed for the Canaries in the summer of 2021 from Rhostyllen FC. Steven James “Evo” Evans is one of the most prominent and most successful players in the JD Cymru Premier, a full Welsh international professional footballer who has played for The New Saints of Oswestry Town for 13 years as well as making a total of seven appearances for his country.

He was inducted into the JD Cymru Premier Hall of Fame in 2013.

17 - Ryan Williams (Midfield) Locally based Ryan joined the Canaries from Wrexham where he starred as a member of the U18s squad. An excellent campaigner in midfield who has also filled in at centre-half on many occasions.

10 - Darren Thomas (Forward) Diminutive, pacey and skilful winger local boy Darren joined the Cofis in the 2012/13 and, apart from a four month sojourn in the Welsh Premier with Aberystwyth Town, he has been a major factor in Town’s climb up the leagues. Darren has also played for Llangefni and Porthmadog, scoring two Welsh Premier hat-tricks for the Anglesey club and quickly collecting 13 goals from 31 Welsh Premier appearances. Darren scored his 100 th goal for the club during the 2017/18 season and is adored by the Oval faithful, who refer to him as the Cofi Messi.

11 – Rob Hughes (Forward/ Midfield) A tenacious midfielder/attacker,Rob netted 18 goals for Prestatyn Town during season 2019/20, before joining Melbourne Knights in Australia. His goals helped to propel the Seasiders to the JD Cymru North title. He had previous experience of football down under from his time with Goulburn Valley Suns, whom he played for in 2017. Signed for the Canaries from Flint Town United during the summer of 2021.

6 – Dion Donohue (Defender) A former Everton trainee, he began his senior career in the lower levels of Welsh football with Porthmadog, Holyhead Hotspur and Caernarfon Town before switching to Sutton Coldfield Town of the Northern Premier League Division One South in 2014. A year later, he turned professional with Chesterfield in EFL League One, and spent two years with Portsmouth before joining Mansfield Town in 2019. Started his second spell at the Oval during the summer of 2021.

23/04/2022— THE NEW SAINTS 3 CTFC 1 JD Cymru Premier—Championship Conference It turned out to be a bittersweet day for Caernarfon Town on Saturday as they played their final match of the Cymru Premier League season against champions The New Saints.

Playing at Park Hall against the full time professional outfit is always a tough challenge and so it proved for the Cofis, who eventually lost an entertaining match by three goals to one.

However, manager Huw Griffiths and the travelling Cofi Army, all clad in Hawaiian shirts on their last away day of the campaign, can take plenty of positives from the day.

The first was that, despite finding themselves a goal down after just two minutes courtesy of a superb acrobatic finish from McManus, Caernarfon refused to let their heads go down and stayed resolute and competitive throughout. In fact, just two minutes after the opener, Darren Thomas was close to equalising with a volley that home stopper Paul Harrison did well to tip over his bar.

Thomas went close for a second time in the twenty fifth minute after Sion Bradley had headed the ball on to him, but the usually deadly playmaker clipped his first time effort from eighteen yards wide of the target.

The hosts enjoyed plenty of possession but Town’s defence dealt well with most of what they had to offer, with keeper Jakub Ojrzynski a reliable last line as he put on his best performance in a Caernarfon shirt, thwarting Brobbel and McManus whilst Hudson saw hi s header cannon off the woodwork. Brobbel did finally beat the young goalkeeper three minutes before the break when he went past two Town defenders before slotting the ball into the corner of the net.

McManus had an opportunity to increase the hosts’ lead three minutes after the restart when the referee declared that the ball had hit Bobby Beaumont in the box, but the striker’s penalty struck the bar and the Cofis remained within touching distance.

Ojrzynski pulled off a string of fine saves in the second half to deny Smith, McManus and Robles whilst Faux, Donohue and Bradley were frustrated not to have taken advantage of their opportunities to place the hosts under pressure.

Pleasing for Griffiths and the Cofis was the introduction of four local Academy players into the action, all of whom did well against quality opposition. This suggests that there is a pathway into the first team for the club’s youngsters, and Griffiths does not seem to be reticent to giving them an opportunity.

McManus did eventually score a third for TNS before Gwion Dafydd pulled a late consolation goal back for Caernarfon in the final minute.

Despite the defeat, Caernarfon finished the season fourth in the league, their joint highest in the top tier and whilst they would have preferred to have signed off with a victory, they can look forward to the Irn-Bru play-offs with plenty of confidence after an excellent performance.
