We learned recently of the passing of two of our faithful supporters – Mr John Lewis (Dongo) and Mr Paul Wills. On behalf of the players and coaching staff I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to their families. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time.

This afternoon we welcome Gavin Chesterfield and his Barry Town team to the Oval. Congratulations are in order for Gavin as he reaches a special milestone as manager of Barry Town – today is his 500th game in charge, quite an achievement. I’m sure everyone at Caernarfon would like to join me in wishing him well on this special day, but hope that amid all the celebrations he and his team won’t be celebrating a win here at the Oval!!!!

Things are getting really tight in the League now with only 6 points separating Cardiff Met in 5th place and Aberystwyth in 11th place and our match today is 7th v 8th so it’s very important for us to start getting some points on the board once again. As you know we’ve suffered a lot from illnesses and injuries this season and now with one or two suspensions coming into force the numbers are depleted yet again. We can’t control the first two but the bookings to a certain extent are in our own hands although we can’t account for all the refereeing decisions! To give us the best chance of returning to winning ways it’s vital now for all players to keep their heads and we on the bench will be emphasising that to the players! Once again though we will definitely need the Cofi Army’s support to achieve this – so please make your presence known and your voice heard!

Despite three consecutive top half accomplishments, the two teams have gradually slid down the rankings each year, with Barry Town United finishing one place above the Cofis in every season since their promotion (18/19 Barry 3rd, Cfon 4th | 19/20 Barry 4th, Cfon 5th | 20/21 Barry 5th, Cfon 6th).

Caernarfon Town have lost their last three league games, while Barry Town United are only two points above the relegation zone after claiming just one point from their last five league outings.

The league record might be abysmal, but there was reason to celebrate at Jenner Park on Tuesday as the Dragons smashed seven past Pontypridd Town to reach the Nathaniel MG Cup semi-final.

Haverfordwest County (9th) v Newtown (3rd) | Saturday – 14:30 Newtown are the in-form team in the JD Cymru Premier as Chris Hughes’ side are now level on points with second-placed Flint Town United following a fantastic run of four consecutive league victories.

Haverfordwest County have also climbed up the table and are out of the relegation zone after losing just once in their last five league matches.

But both sides tasted disappointment on Tuesday night as the pair were knocked out of the Nathaniel MG Cup, and with the two clubs already out of the Welsh Cup they can now concentrate solely on the league.

Newtown are unbeaten in their last six visits to the Bridge Meadow Stadium (won 5, drawn 1), and the Robins’ current away record is outstanding with just one defeat in their last 12 league games on the road.

It was with great sadness that we heard the news of the recent passing of a loyal supporter of the club, John Lewis (Dongo).

John was a keen supporter of the club for all his life and would travel to away matches with us when we played in the English systems. He was one of life's characters and a well-known, and much loved in and around the town of Caernarfon. He will be sorely missed by everyone at the Oval. Thanks for the laughs and memories John!

Mr Paul Wills Everyone at the Oval is heartbroken to hear the sad news that long standing supporter of the club, Paul Wills, has passed away after a short stay in hospital.

Paul was a former director at the Oval and has, over the course of the last thirty years, been an integral part of Caernarfon Town Football Club.

Chairman Paul Evans has paid tribute to Paul: “Paul was a straight talking man, with a very sharp wit and whilst it’s true to say that he would never mince his words where football was concerned he was always firm but fair.

Although no longer a member of the Board he was still actively assisting the club and always made himself available to help us whenever possible. An example of this was when we ran into difficulties with a collapsed floodlight early in 2020 and Paul stepped in and used his expertise in structural matters to help us. There have been numerous such instances over the years, and we all knew with Paul that whatever he did for the club, he did so from the heart. He was a true friend to the club, and someone who brought laughter and joy to the terraces. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his unequivocal support and all he has done for us. We will miss him enormously in and around the club and will all remember him fondly as a warm, generous and trustworthy man who supported Caernarfon Town through thick and thin.”

Our previous Chairman, Marc Roberts, also paid tribute to Paul: “I had the privilege of knowing Paul Wills for over 30 years. I served with him on the original Canaries committee, and I worked side by side with him on a number of projects over the last three decades, most notably the main stand in 2000. He was a friend to me, to all of us, and to this wonderful football club of ours, Anyone who knew Paul knew of his acerbic wit, his biting comments, and honest views about the calibre of players and coaches, and his no nonsense approach to dealing with prima donnas and egotistical managers. Comments that made you wince and laugh in equal measure. A sharp mind and brilliant dry sense of humour that had us in fits week after week at the Oval.

For all that acidic humour, the real Paul was unassuming, profoundly generous, and modest. He was a genuine, kind, and loyal friend to everyone, and no one more than Big Ron! The perfect double act: it was a joy to watch them in action. Never one to be in the limelight, Paul contributed so much to Caernarfon Town over the years, but it was always behind the scenes, without fuss or fanfare. it would be impossible for me to do him justice on a post like this, but I can tell you that CTFC benefitted from his support and generosity time and time again, and the contribution he made has been the equal of anyone over the last 30 years.

He was one of the best, and I will miss him deeply. But the memories are rich, happy, and vivid, and he, like his partner in crime, will live long in the minds of all Caernarfon Town supporters.

Rest well Paul – and thanks for being you!”

Mike is an experienced keeper with over 230 Welsh Premier League appearances including a Welsh Cup Final and a Europa League tie. 29—CLAYTON GREEN A talented combative central midfielder joined the club this summer from Carmarthen Town. Clayton brings a host of experience from playing in the English system, where he has represented the likes of Paulton Rovers, Frome Town and Evesham

2—PAUL MORGAN Paul is a popular and enthusiastic full back with an infectious approach to life. Paul is another local lad and was signed in 2013 from Newport County. During this time he has developed into an experienced full back and has amassed over 160 games for the club. Paul has won all three divisions of the Welsh League whilst at the club and is a fully qualified mechanic.

3—CHRIS HUGH Chris is a 28-year-old left back who signed for the club in 2016 from Merthyr Town.

Since signing Chris has made over 100 appearance and scored seven times. Chris is an attacking minded fullback who offers just as much going forward as he does at the back. His quick feet and technical ability have made him a fan favourite at Jenner Park. Chris is also a Welsh international futsal player and has been integral in Wales’ futsal setup while playing for the club.

4—LUKE COOPER Luke joined the club in 2016 from Caerau Ely, where he won the Division One title, and has become an integral part of the team and a virtual ever-present ever since.

The 27-year-old has now made nearly 150 appearances for Barry and scored eight goals, helping us win promotion back to the top-flight before qualifying for the Europa League two years later. Luke is a passionate and committed central defender who is part of our squad leadership team for the 2020/21 season.

12—LUKE CUMMINGS Luke is a 28-year-old right-back who joined Barry in the summer of 2019 following six seasons at Carmarthen Town. He won both the Supporters’ and Manager’s Player of the Year awards after a fantastic debut season at Jenner Park that also saw him called up to the Wales C squad for the first time. Strong defensively, it was his ability to provide a dangerous attacking threat that really impressed, and resulted in two goals in 25 league appearances. Luke is also formerly of Cardiff City, Neath and Bath City.

16—CURTIS McDONALD An experienced centre-back, Curtis joined us at the start of this season having spent the last couple of years at Chippenham Town. He is a graduate of Cardiff City’s academy and a former Wales Under-21 international, and has featured for the likes of Forest Green Rovers, Newport County and Brackley Town in the English nonleague system. Now 32, Curtis brings strength, calmness and leadership to the back four.

6—ROBBIE PATTEN Midfielder Robbie is a former Cardiff City U23’s and Wales U19’s player who joins from Conference South club Chippenham Town. Robbie is a player who fits our player mould and style of play and is young with a good pedigree. He has a good range of passing and technical ability 7—KAYNE MCLAGGON Kayne is another local Barry lad, who joined the club during the 2017 off season from Merthyr Town where he was top scorer over recent seasons. Kayne progressed through the youth ranks to play as a professional in Southampton’s 1st team.

Since then his career has seen him play for Eastbourne Borough, Salisbury City, Bristol Rovers, Weston Super Mare and Merthyr Town. Capped internationally up to u19 level, Kayne is a dynamic striker who has settled well into his home town club.

9—NATHANIEL JARVIS Nat was our first summer signing of 2020, finally completing a move to Jenner Park after coming close on multiple occasions over the years. The 28-year-old was born in Cardiff but represents Antigua and Barbuda at international level. His former clubs include Cardiff City, Newport County, Bath City and most recently Chippenham Town. Wearing number nine, Nat is a real presence upfront as he is a clinical finisher but also strong at bringing other attackers into play.

Hanes Diweddar CPD Tref Y Barri Recent History of Barry Town United In December 2008, a crisis meeting at Jenner Park saw supporters pledge their commitment to operating the first team (eventually forming a company for this purpose), to allow Lovering to focus on finding a buyer. In one of multiple close calls, the club appeared on the verge of being sold in 2010, when businessman Clayton Jones appeared to strike a deal. However, this fell through at the eleventh hour, scuppering an ambitious plan to bring in John Hartson as Barry’s Director of Football. Undeterred, 2010 saw the Stand Up For Barry campaign launch, using new social media platforms such as Twitter to spread news of the club’s plight with a wider online audience. With celebrities and strangers alike throwing their weight behind the cause, the support received from across the football community proved an invaluable asset, as Barry’s fans strived to keep their club alive. Shortly after the close of the 2010–11 campaign, Lovering announced his renewed intent of withdrawing the Barry first team from so -called ‘higher league’ football. To prevent this, the Barry Town Supporters’ Committee (BTSC) took on complete control of all football and its funding; beginning what became known to some as the ‘DIY Football’ era. In the eventful months that followed, the rejuvenated, fan-run Barry Town set-up enjoyed their most successful Welsh Cup campaign in several seasons; defeating historic rivals Merthyr at Penydarren Park and winning at Haverfordwest in extra-time, before being edged out at Newport County, by three goals to two. 2012 marked the 100th anniversary of the club’s formation, with a series of events lined up to mark this and the subsequent centenary season. To launch the festivities, Cardiff City visited in an August friendly, attended by 2,000 spectators. However, Lovering’s threats to withdraw Barry from the Welsh League would intensify in the weeks prior, threatening to cast a cloud over the celebrations. In November, a successful ‘100 Years of Barry Town’ event was attended by players past and present, before the Town beat Welsh League champions Cambrian and Clydach on the 100th anniversary. Then, in March 2013, following wins against Caerleon, Penrhyncoch, Ely Rangers and Pontardawe, Barry won 2–0 at Flint Town United to progress to the Welsh Cup semi-final for the first time in a decade. Gavin Chesterfield’s team would narrowly lose to eventual winners Prestatyn Town, while marking the first ever appearance of a fully-amateur Barry side at the Welsh Cup semi-final stage.

On 7 May 2013, mere weeks after their heroic Welsh Cup exit, Stuart Lovering moved to withdraw the senior team from the Welsh League, against the will of the BTSC, players and supporters; who were ready, willing and able to fulfill the remaining two league fixtures (both against Ton Pentre).

Rejecting this perceived act of sabotage, those running the football outlined their intentions to continue as they were, adopting the United suffix to help symbolise their continuing unity and endeavour. However, a meeting of the FAW Council in Betws-y-Coed determined the team would have to play “recreational football” instead; a declaration that was met with widespread outcry.

Eventually, there seemed hope for beleaguered Barry, when a second meeting was arranged to hear new evidence as to why the team should be able to continue. At this second gathering, in Caersws, 15 of the FAW Councillors voted against discussing Barry’s future, sensationally ending the meeting in no more than five minutes and at considerable expense. Notably, it emerged that this decision went against the recommendations of the FAW’s Domestic Committee and legal team.

With their immediate and long-term future unclear, Barry began their pre-season across the border in England, followed by a 3–2 defeat to Premiership newcomers Cardiff City, watched by a crowd of 1,650 supporters. Remarkably, given the difficult circumstances, Barry had even led 2-1 at half-time.

Ultimately, a High Court judge in Cardiff ruled in Barry’s favour; stating that the FAW Council had acted unlawfully in denying them their licence to play Welsh League football. As a result, the fan-run Town team were entered back into the Welsh League for the start of the 2013-14 football season.

In the years that followed this landmark struggle, Barry would go and win two consecutive Welsh League titles, reclaiming their rightful place in the second tier and continuing to develop as a club, both on and off the pitch; adopting new youth, academy, female and pan-disability sections.

In 2016–17, the team would reach the final of Nathaniel MG Cup for the first time since 2001, becoming only the second side from outside the top flight to achieve this feat since the Welsh Premier League’s tournament was expanded to include outside entrants, several years previously.

Then, in April 2017, the club secured its return to the JD Welsh Premier League as Welsh League Division One champions; the latest step in a remarkable revival for a club that would not give in.

CAERNARFON TOWN FC PEN PICS 2021/22 1 – Jakub Ojrzynski (Goalkeeper) A 19-year-old Polish national, Kuba signed for the Canaries during the Summer of 2021 on loan from Liverpool FC. He is regarded as an excellent prospect by LFC and he has been a regular starter in the Under 23 level and was on the bench for the first team on several occasions last season.

4 - Gruffydd John (Defender) Signed by the Canaries from CPD Porthmadog during the Summer of 2019. Very talented young central defender who will be a valuable addition to the squad. Previously played for Llanrug United in the Welsh Alliance and was also a Welsh Schools international. Played a pivotal role in Town’s defence last season and is certain to feature regularly this season.

2 – Iwan Cartwright (Defender) Iwan signed for the Canaries during the summer of 2021 from Cefn Druids AFC. His previous clubs include Newtown AFC, Nuneaton, Wrexham and Hednesford. Looking to establish himself at right back this season.

5 – Steven Evans (Defender) Steven signed for the Canaries in the summer of 2021 from Rhostyllen FC. Steven James “Evo” Evans is one of the most prominent and most successful players in the JD Cymru Premier, a full Welsh international professional footballer who has played for The New Saints of Oswestry Town for 13 years as well as making a total of seven appearances for his country.

He was inducted into the JD Cymru Premier Hall of Fame in 2013.

17 - Ryan Williams (Midfield) Locally based Ryan joined the Canaries from Wrexham where he starred as a member of the U18s squad. An excellent campaigner in midfield who has also filled in at centre-half on many occasions.

10 - Darren Thomas (Forward) Diminutive, pacey and skilful winger local boy Darren joined the Cofis in the 2012/13 and, apart from a four month sojourn in the Welsh Premier with Aberystwyth Town, he has been a major factor in Town’s climb up the leagues. Darren has also played for Llangefni and Porthmadog, scoring two Welsh Premier hat-tricks for the Anglesey club and quickly collecting 13 goals from 31 Welsh Premier appearances. Darren scored his 100 th goal for the club during the 2017/18 season and is adored by the Oval faithful, who refer to him as the Cofi Messi.

11 – Rob Hughes (Forward/ Midfield) A tenacious midfielder/attacker,Rob netted 18 goals for Prestatyn Town during season 2019/20, before joining Melbourne Knights in Australia. His goals helped to propel the Seasiders to the JD Cymru North title. He had previous experience of football down under from his time with Goulburn Valley Suns, whom he played for in 2017. Signed for the Canaries from Flint Town United during the summer of 2021.

by Paul Evans, Press Officer and Website Editor 23/10/2021— NEWTOWN AFC 1 CTFC 0 JD Cymru Premier Caernarfon’s recent run of heartache against Newtown continued at Latham Park last night as they lost their fourth successive match, in just five months, to the Robins.

To be honest, there was very little to choose between the sides this time around and Town manager Huw Griffiths will be lamenting his charges’ sudden lack of cutting edge up front as they ended their second successive match goalless.

The Cofis manager was handed a pre-match blow when captain Dion Donohue was forced out and so a reshuffled backline saw Ryan Williams teaming up with Bobby Beaumont as a new centre half partnership, with Rob Hughes returning to the starting eleven after suspension.

The match began at a brisk pace and Newtown shaded the early exchanges, although Caernarfon did seem capable of creating opportunities whenever Darren Thomas and Rob Hughes were in possession, the latter firing Town’s first effort at goal straight at keeper Dave Jones in the twelfth minute.

Iwan Cartwright will have been disappointed five minutes later not to get his header from a Hughes free kick on target when well placed whilst, at the other end Caernarfon stopper Ojrzynski pulled off fine saves to deny Aaron Williams and Lifumpa Mwandwe. Rob Hughes saw his goalbound effort on the half hour mark blocked by Williams and there was not too much by way of goalscoring chances until first half injury time when the Cofis failedto deal with a cross and the ball eventually found Mwandwe, who finished well from an acute angle and into the far corner. It was acruel blow to Caernarfon who had dealt well with the hosts’ attempts to use the flanks to attack, with Mwandwe in particular an often used option.

The second period saw a similar pattern of play as the first, with most of the action taking place in midfield, from where Darren Thomas and Noah Edwards were finding it hard to break forward with regularity.

The hosts had two or three half chances to grab a second goal but a combination of wayward shooting and fine saves from Ojrzynski kept the Cofis in the game and, despite putting on some late pressure, Caernarfon found the hosts’ defence too tough a nut to crack and, once more, the yellow and greens left Latham Park in disappointment having failed to get back on level terms.
