Gair gan Huw We’ve had 2 good results this past week, and against Penybont on Saturday we certainly created a number of good chances and dominated a lot of the play. It wasn’t though until the last minute that we managed to secure a point! We will be aiming to keep this momentum going tonight against Bala.

Our previous three meetings against them have resulted in a draw, a win and a loss. Bala are on a good run at the moment and have now secured their place in Europe - in fact it was when Sion Bradley scored our equaliser on Saturday that their champagne bottles came out. Tonight we will be going all out to secure some more points against them and to hopefully to somewhat burst their bubble! It was really good to hear the cheering on Saturday – it made a difference, so a big ‘thank you’ to you all for your support.

CHAMPIONSHIP CONFERENCE Caernarfon Town (6th) v Bala Town (3rd) | Tuesday – 19:45 After a comfortable victory at Barry Town on Saturday, Bala Town have secured the third position and confirmed their place in Europe.

It was an afternoon to remember for captain Chris Venables who netted a hatrick at Jenner Park to get himself over the 200–goal milestone in the JD Cymru Premier.

Venables is the league’s current top scorer again this season with 24 goals to date, and after bagging eight goals in his last six appearances against Caernarfon, the prolific frontman will be confident that he can add to his tally this Tuesday.

Caernarfon Town are on an eight–game winless streak, which is their worst spell in the top flight since 2009.

Pen-y-bont (4th) v The New Saints (2nd) | Tuesday – 19:45 The New Saints have gone three games without a win for the first time this season, and the Shropshire side must bring that run to an end on Tuesday if they are to keep the pressure on table toppers, Connah’s Quay.

The Oswestry outfit have failed to score in their last two matches, but manager Anthony Limbrick knows that the Nomads only need to slip up once to put the Saints back in the drving seat.

It will be a tough challenge for Pen-y-bont who have lost every one of their previous six meetings with The New Saints.

Barry Town United (5th) Connah’s Quay (1st) | Tuesday – 19:45 Connah’s Quay know that their fate remains in their own hands – win all of their remaining three fixtures and they will be crowned champions of Wales for the second consecutive year.

And the Nomads will take courage from the fact that they are unbeaten in their last nine meetings with Barry Town United (won five, drawn four).

Gavin Chesterfield’s Dragons have been in poor form lately, picking up only one point from their last six games.

Cefn Druids (12th) v Flint Town United (11th) | Tuesday – 19:45 Cefn Druids have lost their last six games and are now certain to finish the season at the bottom of the table.

Flint Town United are level on points with Aberystwyth Town, and despite the fact that there will be no relegation from the JD Cymru Premier this year, both clubs will be determined not to finish in the bottom two so they can go into next season with the assurance that they’ve deserved their place in the top flight.

Newtown (7th) v Cardiff Met (9th) | Tuesday – 19:45 Newtown began the second phase nine points behind 7th placed Haverfordwest County, but after seven games without defeat the Robins could secure their place in the play-offs this Tuesday. Cardiff Met are also in fine form, and are unbeaten in their last six matches.

But Newtown may have the upper hand as home advantage has been a key factor in this fixture over recent years, with the away side failing to win any of the last 10 meetings between these clubs.

Highlights of all games will be on Mwy o Sgorio this Wednesday night at 21:30.

Our latest zoom conversation featured 3 inspirational women who have officiated some of the best players in the world and are paving the way for future generations of women referees in Wales.

Cheryl Foster, former Welsh International and Liverpool Ladies footballer turned FAW & FIFIA referee Ceri Louise Williams, FAW & FIFA Assistant Referee Michelle Portelli, FAW Assistant Referee Does retiring from playing mean the end of your footballing career?

The answer is a resounding no! The answer from Cheryl, former Welsh International and Liverpool Ladies footballer turned referee, was loud and clear. Her career as a footballer came to an end in 2011, after the demands of being a topflight footballer, as well as the demands of her day job, were beginning to take its toll (Yes- even women playing in an International League still have regular jobs!). However, Cheryl did not want that to be the end of her footballing career, so joined a refereeing course in the October, passed by the December - and has not looked back since.

However, being a referee does not mean you need years of playing under your belt before you can take up the whistle.

It is just your love of the game, and that resonates with Ceri, Welsh FIFA Assistant Referee. When she was just 15 years old, she joined her dad and her brother on a referee course – primarily as she did not want to be left out!

“I am an awful footballer. Playing was never an option for me, but I’ve always loved football,” Ceri said. Having come from a football mad family, with her dad, mum, and brother all playing, and her dad also coaching, she saw becoming a referee as the perfect way to share in the joy of the game.

Michelle Portelli’s family are also very football orientated with both her sons playing football. After coaching mini football, she noticed the lack of local referees and decided to take the route to become one herself. Being initially nervous due to her being the only female on the course, Michelle pursued it nonetheless, and now enjoys a thriving refereeing career. Her most recent game being the Swansea v Cardiff Met game.

Fortunately, none of our panellists have experienced many negative reactions from crowds, players, or colleagues. However, it is important to remember, which was a consistent message from all our panellists, that if there is ever a mistake made, it is not because they are women. It is because they are human, and they are the same mistakes that their male counterparts make. “I think it’s easier for people to think it’s because it’s a woman” Ceri said, “but the ref that made that mistake this week, chances are the ref the following week will make the same mistake.”

“I’ve been a ref for 12 years”, states Cheryl “and there’s been a shift. There wasn’t a lot of female refs and I got double takes quite often and looks saying ‘are you sure you’re in the right place?.’ But over the years, it’s become more normal.

It’s going in the right direction.”

Looking towards the future, the ladies all have the same hopes for women referees - “More females coming through the pathways and picking up the whistle.” Ceri added that for her, she’d seen the growth over the last 10 years – and that needed to continue. “I’d love to see over 100 female referees operating across the women’s games, and even one female official at every prem match!” We agree Ceri!

One thing is clear, there is no direct path to becoming a referee. If you have the passion and determination, you can become the next Cheryl, Ceri or Michelle. Whether you are a slick player or have two left feet, refereeing is for everyone and every gender.

ANDREW BURNS - 25 year old right back Burns joined the Lakesiders from Tamworth in 2018. Andy began his career at Bolton Wanderers before being picked up by Bradford City in 2011. A move to Dagenham and Redbridge followed in 2012 prior to signing for Barrow in 2013.

Andy Morrell signed the defender in 2015 where he has spent three season at Tamworth making 136 appearances in total for the club. He won Town’s Supporters Player of the Year award the end of last season.

KIERAN SMITH – Smith started out at Chester Nomads before signing for the Lakesiders back in 2013. In his second spell with the Club he spent 6 months at Tasman United in 2017 before returning in February 2018. With over 150 starts to his name, Kieran is one of the League’s highly rated strikers due to his electrifying pace and his goalscoring form.

SEAN SMITH - Returned to Maes Tegid in June 2018 from Connah’s Quay after making 104 appearances in all competitions for the Nomads.

Started out in Wrexham before coming to Bala on loan in 2014 making 37 starts for the Lakesiders. The left back has plenty of pace and is highly rated as one of the best defenders in the WPL. Sean made 38 starts for the Lakesiders last season.

JONNY SPITTLE - 24 year old Spittle was released by Connah’s Quay following the end of the season and was quickly snapped by the Lakesiders. A central defender, Jonny’s early career started at Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Rochdale before a switch to the Welsh Premier League. He has had spells at Airbus, Llandudno and Aberystwyth prior to a move to the Nomads in January 2018 with 16 starts for the Deeside outfit.

LEE MOLYNEUX - Left-footer Lee hails from Merseyside and has numerous caps for England at Under 16, 17 and 18 level to his name. Starting his career at Everton, he has plenty of Football League experience after spells at Southampton, Plymouth Argyle, Accrington Stanley, Crewe, Rochdale, Tranmere Rovers with more recent appearances for Morecambe, Guiseley and Barrow.

HENRY JONES – A Welshman from Aberaeron, Henry came through Swansea City’s youth ranks from the age of eight until he turned professional aged 18. Whilst with the Swans, he represented their Under 21 and Under 23 side and earning Wales U21 caps in the process. He signed for Bangor City in July 2016 and had a fantastic debut season in the league saw him nominated and subsequently win the WPL Young Player of the Year accolade and named in the WPL Team of the Year. In his debut season for the Lakesiders he scored 15 goals in 32 games and providing 15 assists plus made an appearance in the Wales C squad.

STEVE LESLIE - Midfielder Steve Leslie joined the Club from Newtown during the summer. The 31 year old was born in Glasgow but was brought up in Shrewsbury and still lives there now. He came through the youth ranks at Shrewsbury making over 100 appearances for the Salop. From there, spells at Hereford United, Wrexham and AFC Telford before a move to coach football in Australia. On his return to the UK he has appeared for Worcester City, Solihull Moors, Sutton Coldfield, Corby Town and then Newtown.

SHAUN KELLY - Previously with the Lakesiders back in 2010/11, Kelly started out at Chester City in 2007 before a move to Burton Albion two years later. His spell at Maes Tegid was only a season long due to Shaun relocating to Australia where he has represented South Melbourne and Dandenong City, earning himself Player of the Year, named club captain and finished runner-up in the league. Shaun faced a spell on the sidelines as he broke his foot back in 2014 whilst overseas.

ANTHONY STEPHENS - Anthony spent three years with the Lakesiders making 77 starts and scoring seven goals before making the move to Bangor City last June. The versatile midfielder was given the captains armband at Nantporth starting nine games in total before returning to Town in January 2019 and making 7 appearances during the second half of the season.

CHRIS VENABLES - Probably the first name on the team sheet, Chris scooped up the Supporters and Managers Player of the Year at the end of season accolades. A player known for his goalscoring record, Chris has over 400 starts in the WPL to date. A triple Golden Boot winner, he has been named in the WPL Team of the Year, won the JD Welsh Cup and represented Wales at Semi-Pro and C level on numerous occasions. Chris started out at Shrewsbury Town before stints at Welshpool, Caersws, Aberystwyth Town and Llanelli, making the move to Maes Tegid in 2016.

RECENT HISTORY OF CPD Y BALA TOWN FC 2014/15 saw new faces arrive at Maes Tegid with Huw Griffiths joining the Club’s management and Town’s line-up taking on a more youthful look. The season got off to a superb start with Bala firmly placed in the top three by Christmas.

A successful cup run in ‘theWord’ Cup saw them finding themselves in the final for the second successive season but sadly fall to a 3-0 defeat to TNS. By the half-season split Bala didn’t drop below 3rd position in the league as the run in to the final matches of the season approached.

Going into the final match of the season, Town sat in 2nd – were 3 points ahead of Airbus in 3rd with Bala needing a point or more against TNS. Ahead of a bumper crowd a 1-1 draw saw the Lakesiders seal 2nd spot and qualifying for the Europa League for the 2nd time in their history.

After a 3-1 loss away at FC Differdange of Luxembourg, it was all to do in the second leg but goals from Conall Murtagh and Ian Sheridan saw Bala take the lead but their hopes of a second round tie were dashed due to an injury time winner by Differdange.

The Club broke their highest points tally (59) in the Welsh Premier and their highest ever position (2nd). All in all, the best season ever for the Club.

2015/16 was another successful campaign for the Lakesiders. A successive second place finish in the Welsh Premier League after only losing 6 WPL fixtures all season saw them secure European qualification on the final day of the season. A draw against Swedish giants AIK followed but two 2-0 losses brought the end to another Europa campaign.

Unfortunately, Town had a mixed start to the season due to injuries, suspensions and no home ground due to the 3G pitch installation that opened in September. Knocked out of the Irn Bru Cup and League Cup early on, focus was on the League and Welsh Cup and by the end of the League split in January, Town were flying and secured a spot in the top 6.

Bala’s good run continued and they finished 3rd in the WPL, only a point behind 2nd place Connah’s Quay.

Meanwhile, a win against Caernarfon in the Welsh Cup Semi Final saw the Lakesiders reach a Welsh Cup Final for the first time in their history. TNS were the opponents and clear favourties but an incredible second half comeback with goals from Jordan Evans and a 86th minute header from Kieran Smith saw Town pick up the prestigious Welsh Cup trophy for the first time in their proud history and automatic qualification into the Europa League for a 4th time.

2017/18 didn’t get to the bests of starts with only 8 points on the board by the start of October. There were early exits from the League and Welsh Cup but Town had an excellent 4 months in the middle of the season which saw them seal a top 6 spot by the split and then go on to end the season in fourth.

CAERNARFON TOWN FC PEN PICS 2020/21 1 – Josh Tibbetts (Goalkeeper) Josh signed for the Canaries during the Summer of 2020 from Bala Town. His 19 appearances for Bala last season enhanced his reputation for being one of the best young goalkeepers in the Cymru Premier. Previous clubs include Birmingham City Academy, Peterborough, Royston Town, Solihull Moors, Southport, and Grimsby Town Reserves.

4 - Gruffydd John (Defender) Signed by the Canaries from CPD Porthmadog during the Summer of 2019. Very talented young central defender who will be a valuable addition to the squad. Previously played for Llanrug United in the Welsh Alliance and was also a Welsh Schools international. Played a pivotal role in Town’s defence last season and is certain to feature regularly this season.

2 - Joe Williams (Defender) Impressive right-back who signed for the Canaries from promoted Llandudno during the summer of 2015. St Asaph born defender Joe joined Llandudno from local rivals Conwy Borough in January 2013. Joe has also played for Glan Conwy in the Welsh Alliance League and has made the right back position his own. A strong tackler who loves to attack down the right flank, Joe has become a firm favourite with the supporters.

5 - Gareth Edwards (Defender) Gareth signed for Town from Cefn Druids in August 2014 where he was also captain.

A tall and imposing central defender who has proved to be an invaluable addition to the defence. Has also played in the Huws Gray Alliance for Buckley Town. This will be Gareth’s fifth season for the club and he is most definitely one of the leaders in the Caernarfon dressing room. Scored the winning goal at Bangor City in the Welsh Cup two seasons ago and cemented himself as a club legend among the Cofi Army.

17 - Ryan Williams (Midfield) Locally based Ryan joined the Canaries from Wrexham where he starred as a member of the U18s squad. An excellent campaigner in midfield who has also filled in at centre-half on many occasions.

CAERNARFON TOWN FC PEN PICS 2020/21 10 - Darren Thomas (Forward) Diminutive, pacey and skilful winger local boy Darren joined the Cofis in the 2012/13 and, apart from a four month sojourn in the Welsh Premier with Aberystwyth Town, he has been a major factor in Town’s climb up the leagues. Darren has also played for Llangefni and Porthmadog, scoring two Welsh Premier hat-tricks for the Anglesey club and quickly collecting 13 goals from 31 Welsh Premier appearances. Darren scored his 100th goal for the club during the 2017/18 season and is adored by the Oval faithful, who refer to him as the Cofi Messi.

9 – Mike Hayes (Striker) Mike joins the Canaries from Bala Town and has vast experience at this level as a prolific goalscorer.

Previous clubs include Chester and Wrexham Youth systems, Heswall, Connah’s Quay Nomads and Airbus UK Broughton. Looking to lead the line this season and add a few more to his tally.

7 - Sion Bradley (Striker) Sion began his journey to the Oval with spells at Blaenau Amateurs, Penrhyndeudraeth and Bangor City before moving to Porthmadog in January 2017. He signed for us from Porthmadog in 2018 and has impressed enormously by scoring some vital goals.

20 - Cai Jones (Striker) Cai has rejoined the club this Summer after a brief spell back at Porthmadog. Cai was previously with Caernarfon in 2012/13/14 and led the line impressively as we won the treble of the Welsh Alliance League, Welsh Trophy and Cookson Cup under Lee Dixon in 2012/13.

14 – Noah Edwards (Midfield) Noah joined the Canaries in August 2018 under Sean Eardley’s tenure as first team manager and has proved to be a Cofi Army favourite ever since. Signed from Connah’s Quay Nomads where he gained Europa League experience and has also featured for Prestatyn Town.

18 – Mohammed El-Arab (Striker) Locally-based Mo was promoted to the first team last season by Sean Eardley from the Development Squad after impressing in his role as striker. Hoping to get his opportunity this season to enhance his reputation further.

19 – Telor Williams (Midfield) Telor has resigned for the Canaries this season after a spell at Llandudno FC las season. Very tall and physical midfielder who will be hoping to establish himself in the senior squad this season.

13 – Tyler French (Goalkeeper) Tyler signed for the Canaries from Llangefni Town during the Summer of 2020. His previous clubs include Barmouth, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Holywell Town, Penrhyndeudraeth and Porthmadog.

by Paul Evans, Press Officer and Website Editor 01/05/2021— CTFC 2 PENYBONT FC 2 JD Cymru Premier Championship Conference Caernarfon followed up their fine midweek performance at TNS with another excellent display at the Oval on Saturday, scoring a last gasp equaliser to share the spoils against Penybont.

Having lost two out of their three previous encounters this season, the Cofis began seemingly intent on proving a point and they could have gone in front in the thirteenth minute after Mike Hayes broke from defence and found Bickerstaff in the box, before Noah Edwards picked up the ball and hit a low effort that slid past the far right hand post.

The opener arrived eight minutes later after fine work by Cai Jones, who controlled a clearance by Lewis Brass with his chest before threading the ball to Bickerstaff in the box, and the striker turned away from his marker before striking low, his effort proving too powerful for goalkeeper Ashley Morris.

Benjamin Ahmun was given an opportunity to level just four minutes later as he found himself through on goal but Brass stood firm and punched his powerful shot away from the target.

Penybont pulled themselves back on level terms in the thirty fifth minute after Caernarfon failed to clear their lines from a cross and the ball fell to Kane Owen, who beat Brass at his near post with a powerful low effort.

Max Cleworth could have put the Cofis back in front almost immediately as he climbed well at the far post to meet a Bradly corner but his header was deflected wide for another corner. From the resulting set-piece the visitors failed to clear the ball, and when Bradley found Hayes seven yards out it seemed certain that the striker would find the net but his effort flew over the bar as he lost his balance when striking at goal.

Caernarfon continued their dominance in the second period and Sion Bradley’s cross across the six yard area soon after the restart somehow evaded Hayes and Jones, as Morris got a slight flick on the ball.

The Cofis had a penalty shout soon after as Bradley’s cross seemed to have hit the hand of a Penybont defender but referee Huw Jones was not convinced and the visitors cleared their lines.

It was not all away traffic, as Rhys Griffiths’ side were still very much in the game, and they looked dangerous up front, where Sam Snaith and Ahmun were looking to stretch Town’s defence whenever they could.

Edwards went close again in the fifty third minute but his shot flashed wide of the upright and, with sixty seven minutes on the clock Hayes crossed into the six yard area where Cai Jones seemed to arrive in two minds and chested the ball over the woodwork.

The visitors made the most of Town’s profligacy in front of goal when they went ahead in the seventieth minute, Louis Harley heading past Brass from close range.

From hereon in, Caernarfon dominated possession and poured forward at every attempt, looking for the equaliser that they deserved after their performance. After a few near misses, the point clincher finally arrived in the fourth minute of injury time, Bickerstaff doing well on the left before finding Bradley in the box, and the Cofi favourite struck past Morris.

It was an exciting and enjoyable match and special mention should be made of the match officials, especially referee Huw Jones, who let the game flow and, to buck the trend of recent weeks in the Cymru Premier League, kept his cautions to just two during the afternoon.
