This evening we welcome S4C’s Sgorio team and Bala Town to The Oval for the second leg of the postponed Christmas/New Year double header. Last week at Maes Tegid, Town were second best and the honours went to Bala with a decisive 3 – 0 win. Despite Bala’s dominance in the first leg, it won’t deter us tonight – with just 2 games to go until the ‘split’, we will be going all out to reverse last week’s result and to not only secure a very much needed home win but to give us what must now be an outside chance of getting a top six spot! To achieve this, the team will have to improve in all areas, and remain disciplined and focussed for the full 90minutes. We must all put last Friday’s game behind us, stay positive and believe in the ability of our players - when everything goes to plan and playing at their best, the team, with the help of our 12th man, is more than capable of matching any opposition! It would be great, in front of the television cameras tonight, to see Town playing at their very best, to have a capacity crowd at the Oval and to hear the Cofi Army in full voice! Please come and support – your help is needed!

Although the season so far for the first team has been somewhat ‘up and down’ the future looks very promising for Town. Earlier this week, two of the youth players, Gwion Dafydd and Gruffydd Ellis, were selected to play for the Welsh Schools under 18s team against the English Schools under 18s team. The Welsh schools won 1 – 0; an excellent result. Congratulations to Gwion and Gruffydd on their selection and for being part of this very special victory. Regardless of the last two results, Newtown will still secure a Top Six spot if they can pick up just one point from their next three games.

Cardiff Met will be eager to bounce back from last Sunday’s disappointment after losing an epic penalty shoot-out against Connah’s Quay in the Nathaniel MG Cup final.

The Football Association of Wales can confirm that Connah’s Quay Nomads FC have been charged for an alleged breach of Cymru Premier Rules.

Gwion Dafydd and Gruffydd Ellis, members of our U19s and first team squads, recently played for Welsh Schools FA in their 1-0 win over the English Schools FA. A third player, Caio Evans, would also have been included in the squad if it was not for an unfortunate injury. Well done lads!

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS RETAIN THE NMG CUP

Connah’s Quay Nomads have been charged for a breach of Cymru Premier Rules 12.6 (b) and 14.1.

Rule 12.6(b) relates to changes to a Squad List and registration deadlines as referred to in Rule 12: ‘between the closure of the first Professional Registration Period and the opening of the second Professional Registration Period, a club may register a maximum of one new eligible player on List A after the above-mentioned deadlines, provided the quota of locally trained players is respected.’

Rule 14.1 states: ‘No Club may play an ineligible Player in any Match. Any Club which plays an ineligible player in a Match will have three (3) points deducted from its record for that season (or in the case of a Play-Off Match, will forfeit the Match) and will also be liable to a fine. If the Player is a nominated but unused substitute for a Match, he shall be deemed as not having played for the Club in that Match.’

The matter has been referred directly to independent arbitration and a date for the hearing will be confirmed in due course.

06/02/22 Connah’s Quay Nomads retained the Nathaniel MG Cup with a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Cardiff Metropolitan University. The two teams couldn't be separated after 90 minutes at the SDM Glass Stadium and each side took 12 penalties each to determine the winners. Emlyn Lewis and Joseph Evans, who both impressed during the game, had the chance to secure glory for Met, but were both denied by Nomads hero Oliver Byrne. Eliot Evans had to convert from 12 yards with his second penalty to keep the Archers in the tie, but his penalty struck the post as the Nomads celebrated becoming back-to-back winners.

BALA TOWN — PEN PICS 2020/21

SEAN SMITH - Returned to Maes Tegid in June 2018 from Connah’s Quay after making 104 appearances in all competitions for the Nomads.

Started out in Wrexham before coming to Bala on loan in 2014 making 37 starts for the Lakesiders. The left back has plenty of pace and is highly rated as one of the best defenders in the WPL. Sean made 38 starts for the Lakesiders last season.

ALEX RAMSAY—Alex Ramsay signed for the Lakesiders from Caernarfon Town in June of 2020, and made an instant impact at the club. Alex came through the ranks of the TNS scholarship scheme, and was loaned out to Caersws for the 2010/11 season. He then returned to TNS and was offered a professional contract, and was included in their Europa League squad in 2011. Alex would then head out on loan once more, where he would join Cymru Alliance side Rhyl FC, and helped them to the league title in 2012/13 in a season which saw the Lilywhites go unbeaten. In 2016 he would join Caernarfon Town, and again won promotion from the Cymru Alliance to the Welsh Premier League. In the Cofi's two first seasons in the WPL, Alex would help them to two top six finishes before then making the move to Maes Tegid, in a bid to play European football. Alex has also represented his country on a few occassions, while playing for the Wales C Squad and at Under 18's Semi Pro level.

KIERAN SMITH – Smith started out at Chester Nomads before signing for the Lakesiders back in 2013. In his second spell with the Club he spent 6 months at Tasman United in 2017 before returning in February 2018. With over 150 starts to his name, Kieran is one of the League’s highly rated strikers due to his electrifying pace and his goalscoring form.

ANTHONY STEPHENS - Anthony spent three years with the Lakesiders making 77 starts and scoring seven goals before making the move to Bangor City last June. The versatile midfielder was given the captains armband at Nantporth starting nine games in total before returning to Town in January 2019 and making 7 appearances during the second half of the season.

CHRIS VENABLES - Probably the first name on the team sheet, Chris scooped up the Supporters and Managers Player of the Year at the end of season accolades. A player known for his goalscoring record, Chris has over 400 starts in the WPL to date. A triple Golden Boot winner, he has been named in the WPL Team of the Year, won the JD Welsh Cup and represented Wales at Semi-Pro and C level on numerous occasions. Chris started out at Shrewsbury Town before stints at Welshpool, Caersws, Aberystwyth Town and Llanelli, making the move to Maes Tegid in 2016.

NATHAN PEATE—Nathan Peate signed for the Lakesiders from Cefn Druids in August 2020, after spending three and a half years with the Ancients.

Nathan has spent his whole footballing career in Welsh football, mostly with Gresford Athletic where he would play for six years over two different spells.

Nathan has also played for Flint Town, Denbigh Town and Llandudno before establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the Welsh Premier League with Cefn Druids. While at Druids, he was predominant in their success in 2017 -18 as they would overcome Cardiff Met in the European Play-Off final, which gave them a spot in the Preliminary Round of the Europa League for the following year. Nathan has also been called up to the Wales C Squad on two occasions, but unfortunately due to the pandemic, his most recent call-up in March 2020 was postponed.

JONNY SPITTLE—Jonny Spittle signed for the Lakesiders back in June of 2019, joining the club from fellow Cymru Premier side Connah's Quay Nomads.

Spittle has previously played for clubs such as Airbus UK, Llandudno FC and Aberystwyth Town in the Welsh Pyramid. He was on the books of football league clubs Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic and Rochdale before making the switch to the Welsh Pyramid. Since making the switch to Maes Tegid, Jonny has played in all European matches that the Lakesiders have competed in, including the historical win out in Valletta, Standard Liege and the two legged defeat to Larne FC.

Hanes diweddar CPD Y BALA Recent history of BALA TOWN FC 2014/15 saw new faces arrive at Maes Tegid with Huw Griffiths joining the Club’s management and Town’s line-up taking on a more youthful look. The season got off to a superb start with Bala firmly placed in the top three by Christmas.

A successful cup run in ‘theWord’ Cup saw them finding themselves in the final for the second successive season but sadly fall to a 3-0 defeat to TNS. By the half-season split Bala didn’t drop below 3rd position in the league as the run in to the final matches of the season approached.

Going into the final match of the season, Town sat in 2nd – were 3 points ahead of Airbus in 3rd with Bala needing a point or more against TNS. Ahead of a bumper crowd a 1-1 draw saw the Lakesiders seal 2nd spot and qualifying for the Europa League for the 2nd time in their history.

After a 3-1 loss away at FC Differdange of Luxembourg, it was all to do in the second leg but goals from Conall Murtagh and Ian Sheridan saw Bala take the lead but their hopes of a second round tie were dashed due to an injury time winner by Differdange.

The Club broke their highest points tally (59) in the Welsh Premier and their highest ever position (2nd). All in all, the best season ever for the Club.

2015/16 was another successful campaign for the Lakesiders. A successive second place finish in the Welsh Premier League after only losing 6 WPL fixtures all season saw them secure European qualification on the final day of the season. A draw against Swedish giants AIK followed but two 2-0 losses brought the end to another Europa campaign.

Unfortunately, Town had a mixed start to the season due to injuries, suspensions and no home ground due to the 3G pitch installation that opened in September. Knocked out of the Irn Bru Cup and League Cup early on, focus was on the League and Welsh Cup and by the end of the League split in January, Town were flying and secured a spot in the top 6. Bala’s good run continued and they finished 3rd in the WPL, only a point behind 2nd place Connah’s Quay.

Meanwhile, a win against Caernarfon in the Welsh Cup Semi Final saw the Lakesiders reach a Welsh Cup Final for the first time in their history. TNS were the opponents and clear favourties but an incredible second half comeback with goals from Jordan Evans and a 86th minute header from Kieran Smith saw Town pick up the prestigious Welsh Cup trophy for the first time in their proud history and automatic qualification into the Europa League for a 4th time.

2017/18 didn’t get to the bests of starts with only 8 points on the board by the start of October. There were early exits from the League and Welsh Cup but Town had an excellent 4 months in the middle of the season which saw them seal a top 6 spot by the split and then go on to end the season in fourth.

CAERNARFON TOWN FC PEN PICS 2021/22 1 – Jakub Ojrzynski (Goalkeeper) A 19-year-old Polish national, Kuba signed for the Canaries during the Summer of 2021 on loan from Liverpool FC. He is regarded as an excellent prospect by LFC and he has been a regular starter in the Under 23 level and was on the bench for the first team on several occasions last season.

4 - Gruffydd John (Defender) Signed by the Canaries from CPD Porthmadog during the Summer of 2019. Very talented young central defender who will be a valuable addition to the squad. Previously played for Llanrug United in the Welsh Alliance and was also a Welsh Schools international. Played a pivotal role in Town’s defence last season and is certain to feature regularly this season.

2 – Iwan Cartwright (Defender) Iwan signed for the Canaries during the summer of 2021 from Cefn Druids AFC. His previous clubs include Newtown AFC, Nuneaton, Wrexham and Hednesford. Looking to establish himself at right back this season.

5 – Steven Evans (Defender) Steven signed for the Canaries in the summer of 2021 from Rhostyllen FC. Steven James “Evo” Evans is one of the most prominent and most successful players in the JD Cymru Premier, a full Welsh international professional footballer who has played for The New Saints of Oswestry Town for 13 years as well as making a total of seven appearances for his country.

He was inducted into the JD Cymru Premier Hall of Fame in 2013.

17 - Ryan Williams (Midfield) Locally based Ryan joined the Canaries from Wrexham where he starred as a member of the U18s squad. An excellent campaigner in midfield who has also filled in at centre-half on many occasions.

10 - Darren Thomas (Forward) Diminutive, pacey and skilful winger local boy Darren joined the Cofis in the 2012/13 and, apart from a four month sojourn in the Welsh Premier with Aberystwyth Town, he has been a major factor in Town’s climb up the leagues. Darren has also played for Llangefni and Porthmadog, scoring two Welsh Premier hat-tricks for the Anglesey club and quickly collecting 13 goals from 31 Welsh Premier appearances. Darren scored his 100 th goal for the club during the 2017/18 season and is adored by the Oval faithful, who refer to him as the Cofi Messi.

11 – Rob Hughes (Forward/ Midfield) A tenacious midfielder/attacker,Rob netted 18 goals for Prestatyn Town during season 2019/20, before joining Melbourne Knights in Australia. His goals helped to propel the Seasiders to the JD Cymru North title. He had previous experience of football down under from his time with Goulburn Valley Suns, whom he played for in 2017. Signed for the Canaries from Flint Town United during the summer of 2021.

Canaries top scorer last season, Mike is looking to lead the line again this season and add a few more to his tally.

20 - Cai Jones (Striker) Cai has rejoined the club this Summer after a brief spell back at Porthmadog. Cai was previously with Caernarfon in 2012/13/14 and led the line impressively as we won the treble of the Welsh Alliance League, Welsh Trophy and Cookson Cup under Lee Dixon in 2012/13.

6 – Dion Donohue (Defender) A former Everton trainee, he began his senior career in the lower levels of Welsh football with Porthmadog, Holyhead Hotspur and Caernarfon Town before switching to Sutton Coldfield Town of the Northern Premier League Division One South in 2014. A year later, he turned professional with Chesterfield in EFL League One, and spent two years with Portsmouth before joining Mansfield Town in 2019. Started his second spell at the Oval during the summer of 2021.

8 – Daniel Gosset (Midfield) Well known and talented midfielder who started his career at Oldham Athletic in 2012, and later played for Rhyl, TNS, Bangor City and Bala Town. Signed for the Canaries from Bala Town during the summer of 2021. Has also played football at C level for Wales in 2018.

15 – Aaron Simpson (Defender) Aaron started his career at Wrexham and signed for Rhyl in 2017 before moving on to Cefn Druids. Signed for the Canaries during summer 2021.

39 – Cian Evans (Forward) Cian was promoted to the first team squad from the under 19s during season 2020/21 and made several appearances as a substitute.

04/02/2022— BALA TOWN 3 CTFC 0 JD Cymru Premier With just two points separating Bala and Caernarfon, the match had a feeling of a traditional six pointer as a position in the league’s top six remained within reach of both sides. Unfortunately for the Cofis, it was a battle that was beyond them as they finished second best and on the end of a 3-0 defeat. Caernarfon started brightly and on three minutes Mike Hayes found himself in a good position in the six yard area but his first effort scooped high and after readjusting, his second effort, an overhead kick finished well wide of the target.

Hayes and Darren Thomas liked up well in the thirteenth minute before Sion Bradley hit a cross shot that was goalbound but blocked by a Bala defender. Town keeper Tyler French was forced into his first save in the twenty second minute when he did well to hold a stinging shot by Shaun Smith and he was forced into another save five minutes later to deny Mendes. The hosts broke the deadlock in the thirty seventh minute and, not for the first time this season, it was poor marking from a corner that proved their undoing, as Dean Ebbe was left unmarked to head past French from six yards.

The second half started evenly but Caernarfon’s task to get back into the match was made more difficult in the fifty sixth minute when Josh Bailey saw his second yellow card in three minutes and was forced into an early bath.

Town seemed to knuckle down well after the setback and enjoyed a decent ten minutes as they pushed the ball around but, as has been a feature of late, they failed to look dangerous up top and, apart from a Danny Gosset effort that Ramsay did well to block, they did not make inroads into Bala’s defence. With a numerical advantage the hosts looked good enough to extend their lead and it came as no surprise when Ollie Shannon scored their second, after a well worked move in the seventy first minute. Shannon scored again in the ninety fourth minute to put the top hat on a poor evening for Caernarfon, who remain fighting for a six berth position, but must now rely on other results going their way. .
