At long last we’re back at the Oval and playing football – of course we’re still missing the amazing Cofi Army, but at least this is a start. Let’s hope that with the continued progress of the vaccination programme it won’t be too long before we’ll all be re-united - gyda’n gilydd yn un clwb ac yn un teulu!

Although no football has been played during these past few months, a lot of hard work has taken place behind the scenes and I’d like to thank everyone who has given of their time to help the Club in any way, for their efforts.

This afternoon I’d like to welcome Antonio Corbisiero and his team Aberystwyth Town to the Oval. I’m sure that like our last encounter we will once again have a close game. We were the winners on that occasion and we will be hoping to complete the ‘double’ this afternoon. Unlike many of the other teams in the League, we have only been able to train 3 times prior to today’s match, however these sessions have been really good with the lads and coaches raring to get started once again and to continue with the promising form we showed before we went into the second lockdown. During the lockdown we have added to our squad with the loan signings of Jake Bickerstaff and Max Cleworth from Wrexham, and the re-signing of Oval favourite Nathan Craig from Flint. Croeso mawr i’r tri ohonoch! Aberystwyth have also added to their squad with the signings of a number of experienced Welsh Premier League players. We know therefore we will have to be at our best to get a result this afternoon, and the lads are certainly up for the challenge.

Saturday, 6 March Caernarfon Town (5th) v Aberystwyth Town (12th) | Saturday – 14:30 The break in the season came at an unfortunate time for Caernarfon Town who had gone four games without defeat before Christmas, rekindling their hopes of making the Top Six. But it was a completely different story for Aberystwyth Town who were possibly glad of the opportunity to catch their breath following six consecutive defeats. Aberystwyth have gone nine league games without a win, which is their longest run in a decade – and a chance to regroup may have been just what the Black & Greens needed. The Cofis have only lost one of their five meetings with Aberystwyth since their promotion in 2018.

Connah’s Quay (2nd) v Newtown (9th) | Saturday – 14:30 Newtown will be buoyant after their solid display against Pen-y-bont on Tuesday night, but they face a meaner test at the Deeside Stadium where the Robins haven’t won since August 2015. Before the league interval, Connah’s Quay had won seven consecutive top flight matches for the first time in their history, and Andy Morrison’s men are breathing down the necks of TNS who are only three points ahead of the Nomads having played one more game.

Connah’s Quay have won their last six home games against Newtown, and the current Welsh champions have gone two years without losing a league match at home (24 games – won 19, drawn 5).

Cefn Druids (11th) v Barry Town United (4th) | Saturday – 14:30 Barry Town United have won five of their last six meetings with Cefn Druids, including their 4 -1 triumph at Jenner Park in their last match before the league break. No team have conceded more than the Druids this season (2.3 goals per game), and Bruno Lopes’ side need to shape up sharpish if they are to climb out of the relegation zone. The Rock’s retinue can take confidence that they’ve won four of their last five home games against Barry Town United, and the Dragons are without an away win since October, having lost five and drawn once on the road since then.

Haverfordwest County (7th) v Cardiff Met (8th) | Saturday – 14:30 Cardiff Met are another team looking for a change of fortune after losing three on the bounce before Christmas. But the students have an excellent record against Haverfordwest County – Met are unbeaten in five against the Bluebirds, and haven’t lost at Bridge Meadow in 20 years.

Having lost only one of their last six home games, Haverfordwest are certainly ones to watch in the race for the Top Six. Flint Town United (10th) v Pen-y-bont (6th) | Saturday – 14:30 Neil Gibson tasted victory in his first and only game to date as Flint Town United manager, at home against Aberystwyth Town in December (3-0). Now the Silkmen face a tough set of fixtures ahead of the league split as their next six matches are against clubs who are currently sitting in the top half of the table, beginning with Flint’s first ever meeting with Pen-y-bont.

Pen-y-bont have lost their last three away games, and manager Rhys Griffiths will demand an improvement from his side in the wake of their disappointing defeat at Newtown on Tuesday.

The New Saints (1st) v Bala Town (3rd) | Saturday – 17:00 (S4C) After winning each one of their eight home games in the league this season, the Saints will be pleased to be resuming their campaign at Park Hall, where the Oswestry outfit have never lost against Bala Town. But the Lakesiders are the only side who remain unbeaten away from home, and Colin Caton’s crew have collected more points in the first half of this season than in any previous year (35pts from 16 games). Despite their impressive form, there is still nine points separating Bala and TNS, which means it’s imperative for the Lakesiders to get something out of this game if they are to remain in the hunt for the title.

Welsh Blood Service teams up with FAW’s Cymru Leagues & WPWL urging Caernarfon Town FC supporters to save lives

S4C announce the next batch of live fixtures

The Welsh Blood Service has partnered with the FAW’s JD Cymru Leagues and Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League to launch a brand-new campaign to encourage Caernarfon Town FC fans to donate blood this season and to help save lives in the local community.

The Sgorio cameras will head to Park Hall this weekend as The New Saints take on Bala Town, live on S4C, before they head to Bridge Meadow on the 13th as Scott Ruscoe's men travel to take on Haverfordwest County.

Through its ‘Blood, Sweat and Cheers’ campaign, clubs are being encouraged by the Welsh Blood Service to engage with their supporters and local communities to promote the importance of giving blood and signing up football fans to save thousands of lives. The campaign has received support from former Wales midfielder Owain Tudur Jones and Wales forward Natasha Harding.

Broadcast partners S4C have announced their next set of live fixtures for the 2020/21 JD Cymru Premier season.

In addition, there will be live midweek clashes at Barry on Tuesday the 9th of March and Bala on the 16th March.

ABERYSTWYTH TOWN — PEN PICS 2020/21 Name: Connor Roberts (Goalkeeper) Connor began his professional career with Everton in 2011, enjoying a couple of loan spells before moving to Cheltenham Town a year later where he spent two seasons with the Gloucestershire club. Connor joined Aber last summer on a season long loan from the champions, demonstrating his quality throughout the season – including a Man of the Match performance in a 0-0 away draw at Latham Park in December 2019. On the international stage, Roberts has represented Wales at U19s level four times with six appearances for the U21s. In 2014, he received a call-up to the senior squad for a friendly against the Netherlands.

Name: Alex Pennock (Goalkeeper) Local lad and Aberystwyth University Scholarship holder Pennock returns to this year's squad, having provided backup to Connor Roberts in 2019/20, making 5 first team appearances.

Name: Louis Bradford (Defender) 18-year-old defender Louis Bradford joined the Seasiders on loan in Summer 2020 from The New Saints. Wolverhampton-born Louis impressed in TNS’ Academy sides, enough so to secure himself a loan move in the JD Cymru Premier. A tall and agile defender, Louis is proficient through the middle or as a right-back and will bolster Gavin Allen’s options at the back.

First Team Coach Bari Morgan said: "Louis' performances in training and during friendlies have been impressive, and his versatility is key to our defensive options this season" Name: Harri Horwood (Defender/Forward) Aberystwyth Town announced the return of academy product, Welsh Premier Development League champion and Welsh international Harri Horwood in January 2021. The 20-year-old left-sided player returns to Park Avenue after spells with Cardiff Met University and Briton Ferry Llansawel.

Name: Lee Jenkins (Defender) Aberystwyth Town announced that young starlet Lee Jenkins had signed a one year contract extension with the Black and Greens in June 2020, and will remain at Park Avenue for the 2020/21 season.

At just 19 years of age, Lee is one of the club’s most promising talents, and has already made over 50 Cymru Premier appearances since making his full JD Welsh Premier League debut in Town’s home victory against Llandudno in August 2018.

Name: Ian Kearney (Defender) Aberystwyth Town Football Club announced the acquisition of central defender Ian Kearney from City of Liverpool FC of the Northern Premier League Division One West.Known to Cymru Premier fans for his stints with Airbus UK Broughton and Connah’s Quay Nomads, amassing eight appearances in the Europa League, Ian brings a wealth of experience and leadership qualities to Aber’s youthful defence.

Name: Harry Franklin (Midfield) Aberystwyth Town announced the deadline day acquisition of talented midfielder Harry Franklin from Evesham United of the Southern League Division One South in January 2021. Also experienced in a deeper central role, the 21-year-old joins the Seasiders for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

Born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, Harry plied his trade from youth to senior level with Hereford FC of the National League North where he spent time on loan at Merthyr Town.

Name: Mathew Jones (Defender/Midfield) Local boy Mathew Jones joined the Club in August 2017. 21 year old Mathew attended Comins Coch and Penglais Schools and is the son of Richie "Gas" Jones who played for Town's Reserve side for years and is a loyal supporter of the Black and Greens. He was a key member of Shrewsbury Town's Youth Team which enjoyed a good FA Youth Cup run, reaching the fourth round before being knocked out by Premier League side Sunderland, and joined Aber on his release from the Shrews in 2017. Matty was selected for the Wales Semi Pro side which drew 2-2 with England C at Salford City in March 2019. Jones made a keen impression in pre-season 2017 with some full blooded performances in Central Midfield and was rewarded with squad number 17. In his first season with the club, Mathew was part of the Town side which reached the Welsh Cup Final of 2018, and he was announced in June 2018 as the first recipient of a Football Club Scholarship at Aberystwyth University. ABERYSTWYTH TOWN — PEN PICS 2020/21 Name: Jamie Veale (Midfield) Aberystwyth Town FC announced the arrival of Central Midfielder Jamie Veale, who left Merthyr Town at the end of last season, in June 2020. 24 year old Veale is a tenacious midfield player who joined Cardiff City at a young age and worked his way through the Academy.

Name: Jon Owen (Forward) Forward Jon Owen re-joined the Seasiders in January 2021 from Porthmadog for a second spell in Black & Green.

Affectionately known as “Jon y Cigydd” (the Butcher) by certain factions of the Green Army, Jon Owen makes his return to Park Avenue for a second spell. Formerly of Bangor City, Llangefni Town, Caersws, Rhyl, Llandudno, and Cefn Druids.

Name: Marc Williams (Club Captain) (Striker) Aberystwyth Town Football Club announced the retention of striker and Club Captain Marc Williams for the 2020/21 season. As well as a keen eye for goal, Marc is an expert at holding the ball up, and his influence in the dressing room was underlined when he was named Club Captain for the 2019/20 season. Marc is also an influential character off the field and he was awarded the JD Cymru Premier Player of the Month Award for April 2020, after organising a fundraiser to raise vital funds for NHS Wales. He encouraged other JD Cymru Leagues players to help him in achieving his goal and comfortably reached his target of £5,000.

Name: Rhys Davies (Defender) Aberystwyth Town announced the arrival of talented 19 year old left back Rhys Davies in June 2020. Rhys, from Talgarth in mid Wales is a highly rated defender who joins the Club from National League side Hereford FC. Davies joined Shrewsbury Town in July 2017 straight from school, signing a two year scholarship with the Shrews, after playing Youth Football for Hereford FC. Whilst at Shrewsbury Rhys reportedly attracted the attention of Premier League and Championship Clubs, having spent time on trial at Southampton, where he impressed, as well as being watched by Bournemouth and Norwich.

Name: Steff Davies (Striker) Aberystwyth Town announced the arrival of striker Steff Davies from Penrhyncoch in July 2020. A former Bow Street striker, Steff joined Penrhyn during the summer of 2017 having previously represented Haverfordwest County and Caersws. A physical and strong forward who teaches in local Ysgol Plascrug, Steff scored 11 goals in the Roosters’ final two Cymru Alliance seasons, and continued to score last season in the Cymru North, notching five more strikes including a match winning double against Buckley in October 2019.

Name: Jonathan Evans (Striker) Aberystwyth Town announced the arrival of striker Jonathan Evans from Penrhyncoch in July 2020, who joins for a third spell in Black and Green. 27 year old Jonathan is an Aberystwyth Town FC Academy product and son of Mid Wales Travel Supremo and Club Sponsor Mel Evans. As a youngster Jonathan progressed to Cardiff City's Academy and whilst there he represented the Welsh Schoolboys and Under 16s sides, competing in the Victory Shield.

Jonathan then signed for Accrington Stanley before first joining Aber during Alan Morgan's tenure in July 2011. He made 5 WPL Appearances in 2011/12 before moving on to Penrhynoch, and returned to Aber in January 2016. His best moment that season was scoring twice to earn the Black and Greens a 3-1 win at Haverfordwest County, and he also notched a vital last minute winner at Llandudno the following season, but Jonathan returned to Cae Baker later in 2016/7.

Name: Gwion Owen (Midfield) Aberystwyth Town Football Club announced the signing of Gwion Owen from Ruthin Town following a successful trial period in September 2020. The 25-year-old energetic midfielder reunited with former teammate Ilan Hughes in Gavin Allen’s squad. Welsh-speaking Gwion hails from Llannefydd, near Denbigh, and has impressed in the JD Cymru North with many standout performances since joining Ruthin in 2017. He picked up the club’s Player’s Player of the Season award in 2017/18 and in 2019/20 – captained by Hughes until his departure for Park Avenue in January 2020. Owen was credited with many strong showings throughout, a highlight being his 85th minute equaliser vs Bangor City in October. Gwion shone as a half-time sub trialist during Town’s 1-2 pre-season loss to Haverfordwest County in August 2020, immediately demonstrating his pace and power as Aber pulled a goal back early. This, alongside consistency in training, secured Gwion the move to the JD Cymru Premier.

Upon joining, Gwion said: I can't wait to start playing in the Cymru Premier and for Aber. It's a step up for me but I’m ready for the challenge to push myself and play at the highest level possible. I had a good chat with Gav about the way he wants to play, and I thought it suited my style of play. He said that the club is on the up and told me about his plans to change the club going forward. I hope to bring energy to the team and use my versatility by playing in different positions if needed.

Hanes Clwb Peldroed Tref Aberystwyth The History of Aberystwyth Town FC Although Aberystwyth Town FC was formed in 1884, the club probably existed in the 1870s in an earlier incarnation - the re-establishment of a "town" club is recorded in 1876. Their early days were marked by friendly matches and it was not until 1896 that the club first joined a league - the Welsh League. After only one season they reverted to playing friendly matches but were firmly on the map in 1900, convincingly beating fancied Druids 3-0 in the Welsh Cup final and becoming the first team from West Wales to take the trophy. But this Welsh Cup victory almost proved to be their downfall as they hit a massive financial crisis and a mass exodus of players.

Aber's league career has a nomadic flavour, as they have been members of various leagues since they entered the first competition, the Welsh League, in 1896. That foray lasted only one season and they returned to playing friendly fixtures but did enter the English FA Cup on a few occasions. With interest in the club rekindled, they joined the "Combination" but again for only one term, probably because of the expense of travelling. Aber were members of the Montgomeryshire & District League from 1904, winning several championships, and with the advent of the Welsh National League in 1921 joined the Central Section. The club was very successful in the 1920s - achieving six title wins - and took the Mid-Wales League title in 1933 and 1950. Aber won the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1931 and 1933 and were finalists in 1935 and 1972.

The club began a long stay in the Welsh League (South) in 1951, although they continued to also field a team in the Mid-Wales League, and for a time in the Cambrian Coast League. They eventually returned to mid-Wales competition in 1963 but did not win the league championship until 1984, after finishing as runners-up on six occasions. They retained the title the following season, both under team boss Meirion Appleton.

Aber were, by then, firmly established as one of the premier clubs in mid-Wales and in 1987 they returned to the Welsh League (South). They were three times runners-up before their inclusion as founder members of the League of Wales. Aber achieved their best LoW position - 3rd - in their first season and the club's administrative and social set up are now well established.

After struggling for a few seasons in the League, and flirting with relegation in 1996/7, it took until February for the Black & Greens to gain a home win. Aberystwyth at last found some success in 1998/9 when they qualified to represent Wales in the UEFA InterToto cup competition. They did this by virtue of finishing fourth in the league on 57 points behind Barry on 76, Inter Cable-Tel on 63 and Cwmbran who took third place on goal difference. This took place part-way through the season as a result of Aber crashing 5-0 at home to Caersws in a league game. Powell took over the reins of the club and led the Black & Greens into European competition for the first time. It was a memorable event with Aberystwyth narrowly losing 3-4 over two legs against Floriana of Malta. The success of European qualification brought many changes to Park Avenue. A new BBC studio and TV gantry, followed by the new "Dias" stand which brought the number of seats in the two stands up to nearly 600. The "Dias" stand being named after club legend David "Dias" Williams who holds the club scoring record of 476 goals in only 433 games between 1966 and 1983.

The pressures of maintaining the standards achieved in 1999, and the ongoing upgrading of the stadium left the club financially stretched in the 2000/2001 season. Consequently they were unable to repeat the feat of attaining a European berth, just missing out by three points, although the club gained entry to the FAW Premier cup competition for the third year running. They managed to progress to the quarter-finals twice. Barry Powell paid the price for his failure to qualify for Europe, and left the club by mutual consent. Powell was replaced at the beginning of the 2001/2 season by Frank Gregan. Frank had a very impressive background in English non-league football and was unanimously voted into the job as new manager prior to the start of the season. He was responsible for bringing in several players with extensive experience in the English pyramid, but it took too long for him to produce any kind of consistency on the field of play. When Gregan was linked with the Dr Martens League Western division club, Weston-super-Mare - and the team suffered an ignominious home exit from the Welsh Cup at the hands of CC Sports league Aberaman Athletic in October 2001 - the writing was on the wall for Mr Gregan. This was combined with a poor away record and an exit from the lucrative latter stages of the FAW Premier cup at the hands of Caersws.

Gary Finley took over as player/manager immediately after Gregan departed for Weston. There was an instant improvement in form and with minimal additions to the squad despite most of Gregan's signings departing, a top eight finish looked possible.

The club just missed out on the FAW Premier cup ending up in ninth place in the league on 51 points which was seven points adrift of the UEFA InterToto cup spot claimed by Caersws. They elected to play their home tie in the competition at Park Avenue, and like Carmarthen Town did the year before, Park Avenue witnessed the third undefeated Euro performance in four seasons, as Caersws drew 1-1. Finley took the club to equal its best-ever finish of fourth in 2003/4 and again qualify for Europe, via the Uefa InterToto Cup, but following a policy decision to base the team on more local players, Finley departed with the Merseyside contingent and David Burrows took over as player/manager. The change of strategy produced a worsening of results in 2004/5, but the club's management decided to stick with the Ceredigion player policy despite seeing Park Avenue attendances slump by nearly 40%. The club also received a further set-back in December 2004 when a serious fire destroyed much of the social club's facilities, ruling out the ground for the staging of cup finals until the new John Charles lounge was opened in 2005.

After several undistinguished seasons, the Seasiders reached the final of the Welsh Cup in 2009 under manager Brian Coyne, only to be beaten 2-0 by Bangor City. Coyne stepped down early the following season with Alan Morgan appointed as the new boss, and the club had one of it's best finishes for years, finished in 4th in the 2009/10 season, narrowly missing out on qualification for Europe to Port Talbot Town. Then under the first season of the Welsh Premier League Super 12, Aberystwyth, although in top 6 for most of the first half of the season, saw themselves in the bottom half of the table at the mid season split, being beaten to the top half again by Port Talbot. The club finished in 7th place, before beating Airbus in the Europa League playoff quarter final, and eventually losing out to Neath in the Semi-Final.

CAERNARFON TOWN FC PEN PICS 2020/21 1 – Josh Tibbetts (Goalkeeper) Josh signed for the Canaries during the Summer of 2020 from Bala Town. His 19 appearances for Bala last season enhanced his reputation for being one of the best young goalkeepers in the Cymru Premier. Previous clubs include Birmingham City Academy, Peterborough, Royston Town, Solihull Moors, Southport, and Grimsby Town Reserves.

4 - Gruffydd John (Defender) Signed by the Canaries from CPD Porthmadog during the Summer of 2019. Very talented young central defender who will be a valuable addition to the squad. Previously played for Llanrug United in the Welsh Alliance and was also a Welsh Schools international. Played a pivotal role in Town’s defence last season and is certain to feature regularly this season.

2 - Joe Williams (Defender) Impressive right-back who signed for the Canaries from promoted Llandudno during the summer of 2015. St Asaph born defender Joe joined Llandudno from local rivals Conwy Borough in January 2013. Joe has also played for Glan Conwy in the Welsh Alliance League and has made the right back position his own. A strong tackler who loves to attack down the right flank, Joe has become a firm favourite with the supporters.

5 - Gareth Edwards (Defender) Gareth signed for Town from Cefn Druids in August 2014 where he was also captain.

A tall and imposing central defender who has proved to be an invaluable addition to the defence. Has also played in the Huws Gray Alliance for Buckley Town. This will be Gareth’s fifth season for the club and he is most definitely one of the leaders in the Caernarfon dressing room. Scored the winning goal at Bangor City in the Welsh Cup two seasons ago and cemented himself as a club legend among the Cofi Army.

17 - Ryan Williams (Midfield) Locally based Ryan joined the Canaries from Wrexham where he starred as a member of the U18s squad. An excellent campaigner in midfield who has also filled in at centre-half on many occasions.

12 - Sam Jones (Midfield/Forward) An excellent young prospect who has signed for the Canaries from Bangor City last season. Scored plenty of goals for the Citizens land will be looking to add to his total at the Oval from last season.

CAERNARFON TOWN FC PEN PICS 2020/21 10 - Darren Thomas (Forward) Diminutive, pacey and skilful winger local boy Darren joined the Cofis in the 2012/13 and, apart from a four month sojourn in the Welsh Premier with Aberystwyth Town, he has been a major factor in Town’s climb up the leagues. Darren has also played for Llangefni and Porthmadog, scoring two Welsh Premier hat-tricks for the Anglesey club and quickly collecting 13 goals from 31 Welsh Premier appearances. Darren scored his 100th goal for the club during the 2017/18 season and is adored by the Oval faithful, who refer to him as the Cofi Messi.

9 – Mike Hayes (Striker) Mike joins the Canaries from Bala Town and has vast experience at this level as a prolific goalscorer. Previous clubs include Chester and Wrexham Youth systems, Heswall, Connah’s Quay Nomads and Airbus UK Broughton. Looking to lead the line this season and add a few more to his tally.

7 - Sion Bradley (Striker) Sion began his journey to the Oval with spells at Blaenau Amateurs, Penrhyndeudraeth and Bangor City before moving to Porthmadog in January 2017. He signed for us from Porthmadog in 2018 and has impressed enormously by scoring some vital goals.

20 - Cai Jones (Striker) Cai has rejoined the club this Summer after a brief spell back at Porthmadog. Cai was previously with Caernarfon in 2012/13/14 and led the line impressively as we won the treble of the Welsh Alliance League, Welsh Trophy and Cookson Cup under Lee Dixon in 2012/13.

14 – Noah Edwards (Midfield) Noah joined the Canaries in August 2018 under Sean Eardley’s tenure as first team manager and has proved to be a Cofi Army favourite ever since. Signed from Connah’s Quay Nomads where he gained Europa League experience and has also featured for Prestatyn Town.

18 – Mohammed El-Arab (Striker) Locally-based Mo was promoted to the first team last season by Sean Eardley from the Development Squad after impressing in his role as striker. Hoping to get his opportunity this season to enhance his reputation further.

19 – Telor Williams (Midfield) Telor has resigned for the Canaries this season after a spell at Llandudno FC las season. Very tall and physical midfielder who will be hoping to establish himself in the senior squad this season.

13 – Tyler French (Goalkeeper) Tyler signed for the Canaries from Llangefni Town during the Summer of 2020. His previous clubs include Barmouth, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Holywell Town, Penrhyndeudraeth and Porthmadog.

Young Wrexham loanees looking to shine for the Canaries During the January transfer window, two of Wtexham AFC’s young stars have signed for the Canaries on loan for the rest of this season.

Max Cleworth,, who is eighteen years of age, began his footballing career playing youth football for the likes of Frodsham and Connah's Quay before being recommended to Wrexham at the age of twelve and, having progressed through the club’s Academy, he made his first team debut for the Robins at the age of seventeen against Ayr United in the Scottish Challenge Cup.Late on in the 2019/20 campaign, Max returned to the first team squad just before the season was curtailed. Max was offered a professional contract with Wrexham in August 2020 and we look forward immensely to working with him for the remainder of this campaign.

Wrexham youth team player since the age of 12, Liverpudlian Bickerstaff rose through the ranks before moving on to Liverpool. The striker, who is nineteen years old, He returned to the Racecourse after two seasons at Anfield, scoring a flurry of goals at under-18's level and breaking into the first-team. His debut for the Robins’ senior side came whilst still on youth terms when he faced Ayr United in the Scottish Challenge Cup, a match in which he hit a sensational goal. In the summer of 2020 Jake signed his professional deal, penning a one-year contract ahead of 2020/21.

by Paul Evans, Press Officer and Website Editor 18/12/2020— CTFC 1 NEWTOWN AFC 1 JD Cymru Premier The Canaries’ unbeaten run was extended to three matches tonight but they were forced to work hard for it against an impressive Newtown outfit at the Oval. The weather was atrocious throughout, and certainly affected the action, but the teams still managed to provide a decent spectacle.

The visitors had lost their previous four fixtures but you wouldn’t have known it from the way they went about their business, as they looked spirited and sharp from the off, with Rushton forcing Town keeper Josh Tibbetts into a smart save early doors. Newtown stopper Dave Jones would prove to be his side’s saviour in the first half and his first bit of business came after his poor goal-kick was intercepted by the hosts, with Sion Bradley’s cross halfcleared cleared by Mills Evans into the path of Jack Kenny, who saw his powerful strike excellently saved by Jones. The stopper pulled off another impressive save to keep out a Telor Williams rocket from thirty yards in the nineteenth minute and, although Kenny found the net after a melee in the six yard area a minute later, the referee ruled the effort out due to an infringement by the Caernarfon player. With plenty of pace up front Newtown looked more than capable of causing problems on the break and Tibbetts was forced into more action on the half hour match when he punched away a Rushton strike. Caernarfon went ahead in the thirty third minute after Telor Williams threaded the ball superbly into the path of Sion Bradley, who turned inside his man in the box and coolly side-footed his effort past Jones.

Jones denied a second for the hosts two minutes later as he tipped over a Darren Thomas strike from twenty five yards whilst at the other end, Mike Parker headed the ball off the hosts’ line as McAllister’s effort had beaten Tibbetts. At times the second half appeared to be a battle between Newtown’s strikers and Josh Tibbetts, with the Town keeper producing a man of the match display to keep out numerous goalbound efforts from the visitors.

With the wind at their backs, the Robins dominated the action after the break, although Caernarfon’s defence, led by captain Gareth Edwards, stood resolutely to much of what was thrown at them. Whenever the defence was breached, Tibbetts proved why he has already become a huge favourite with the Cofi Army, as he pulled off saves to deny Davies, Rushton and Breese.

With the clock ticking towards the final minutes, Newtown finally got back on level terms as Rushton got on the end of a long throw by Phillips and found the net from twelve yards. There was no let up in the wind, and rain, and the sides continued to look for a winner and Caernarfon will be disappointed not to have made the most of two corners in injury time.
